Hi mr simon
A friend of mine has won the DV2018. But he has a problem which is in the DVe he has mistyped his family name so instead of writing ” EL KARIMI” he has written ” EL KAMIRI” he replaced R with M. so he wants to know if it is gonna cause denial?
May 16, 2017 at 16:56
The DS260 needs the accurate name. In that case most embassies would forgive the error unless they thought it was an attempt of fraud.

Hello, Brit.
Thank you so much for your information on your amazing blog. This is really helpful and clear. I have a question for you and will appreciate your answer:
I’ve been selected in DV2018 with CN EU17***. I’m currently in the US on F1 status and will be studying until September-October 2017. I’ve read a lot of info if I should consider AoS or CP and eventually decided I’d rather go with CP in my country.
1) I’ve looked up VB for previous years and I see that my CAN becomes current usually in February. Should I submit DS260 ASAP or I can do it once I return to my country in October-November 2017?
2) If I should submit ASAP, being in the US, what address I’m supposed mention in DS260. My address in the US or the address I’ll be staying in my country?
3) I lost my passport here in the US. What should I mention in the DS260. info of my lost passport and then unlock the form and change info once I get new passport?
Thank you so much in advance, Brit. I appreciate your help!
May 16, 2017 at 16:55
1. You can submit now
2. if I were you I would choose the address in your country.
3. Yes

May 16, 2017 at 17:01

Hello Brit,
1. The Date Of Birth on my Secondary school Certificate is 24/05/1989 instead of 24/05/1990. Will these cause any problem?
2. I have the correct ( 24/05/1990) Date of Birth on my Passport, Birth Certificate and other documents. Can it cover for the printing mistake when I go for my interview?
Thank you and I appreciate the good work you doing, I have heard lot of people talking about the good work you doing on some sites and social media_ Brit Simon,
May 16, 2017 at 22:25
1. Not normally – but some embassies might question it.
2. That is good, just make sure the DS260 matches the correct date.

Hi Brut I am Abraham I did my interview today my wife and I . I was the principal Applicant. And the lady ask us the following questions. My highest level of education. May 17, 2017 at 06:13
Hi Brit
Thanks for helping. I have another question here. Can a persons who has worked as a bartender or waiter qualify?
May 18, 2017 at 04:22
That work experience would not qualify someone.
May 18, 2017 at 08:02
Hello Brit
I have worked as a kindergarten teacher in the past two years but I don’t have qualifications for it. Do you think this experience qualifies me??
Thank you
May 18, 2017 at 13:11
Possibly – only the CO can say.
May 16, 2017 at 23:42
Hello,
My name is Youness . I currently live in Morocco and I finished my study’s here. I don’t have a job here yet but I would like to go visit my aunt who has been living in San Francisco with her husbands family for about 17 years now. There’s a college there that I would like to visit and have an Idea about before applying to it and continue my education there. I previously mentioned that I don’t have a job, however I am capable of paying for the trip expenses and opening a bank account to show that I do have capabilities to support myself while I visit.
Please let me know what your feedback on this and if I should apply to the visa tourist or not.
Thank you in advance,

I only advise on DV lottery cases.

Hi Brit,
OC619. Had our interview appointment on 1st May – 8.30AM. We arrived and waited awile and then they called us to to submit our documents and pay the visa fees. Then we waited for a while longer to be called for the interview. Once called my wife and I got our fingerprints taken. My two small kids wanted there fingerprints taken also and the interview officer allowed them just to make them happy. The following questions were asked with my response.
Where do you work and what do you do? I gave my organisation name and my occupation.
What year did you finish high school and did you pursue further studies after? i gave the year and said that i also continued studying at uni level.
Do you have an family members in the US and where do they live? i answered that i have an immediate aunt and the state she lived in.
Will you be staying with there when you go over? i said no and said that we will be staying with my wife’s cousin in another state.
After that he said that our documents are in order and he is approving our greencard and it will be send to the address we gave in 2 days time.
we finally received our passports with the immigrant visa on it after 3 days.
Thank you Brit for your advice and assistance.
I have a question…when we received our documents from the embassy…it said that we have to pay the USD220 to UCIS before we enter the country? I thought we could pay after we entered the country?
May 16, 2017 at 23:56
You can pay the $220 before OR after entry.

Hi Brit,
I have been in the US for 50 days and I received both my green card and SSN and I have equivalency exams on November so I can’t work, my questions are:
1- can I apply for welfare or not?
2- If I can where I should go?
3- Is there any organization can help me till I finish my exam?
I want to thank for in advance for your guidance through the whole journey
May 17, 2017 at 03:10

May 17, 2017 at 05:18
Dear Brit
I got my visa in few days ago.
all the information is correct on visa.
But in the “Immigrant Data Summary” sheet:
1) the spell of my mother name is incorrect: the right is “masoome” and entered “mahsoome”
2) My father name and surname moved(the name is ali ,surname is “karimi” but I filled in ds260 name:”karimi” and surname: ali (I didn’t know this and therefor I did’nt said it to officer.
the both mistakes are corecct in birth Documents.
What do I do?
with best regards

May 17, 2017 at 06:31
Hi Brit, I am about to fill out the DS260 but i have a concern about the background check part. there is a question about whether you have already been arrested here in the US . Last year I have been arrested in NY because i did not pay the fare for the subway. the police caught because at the moment i did not have my documents with me so they put me in custody the time to verify my information . Then I went to court for that and the judge told me that it was not a big deal so i just have to do a community service for one day (that I already did) and then after 6 months they will erase everything from my record. So right now I am wondering if I have to answer yes or no to this question. What do you think i should do in this case? Thanks
May 18, 2017 at 04:21
You tell the truth!!!
May 17, 2017 at 07:52
Hi Simon on educational documents do I need to prepare other documents below my high school certificate?
May 18, 2017 at 04:19
No
May 17, 2017 at 09:13
thank you for everything really
my question is if I have changed my passport before I get the 2NL or after I get the 2NL , what I have to do in the two situations ?
thanks again :))
May 18, 2017 at 04:14
Before the 2NL, you unlock the DS260 and correct. After, you just take the new and old passports to interview.

The principal selectees either have to have met the educational requirement OR the work experience requirement.

Hello Brit,
I submitted DS260 form of FY2018 my case number is about AF000038XX i made a mistake Date of Birth of my previous spouse, i entered 11 JUNE 1995 instead of 06/NOV/1995 but DATE is not mentioned in Divorce Documentation should i request to re-open DS260 or i just have to inform them to correct it the day of the interview?!
Regards
May 18, 2017 at 04:04
As it is your ex – it won’t matter.
May 17, 2017 at 18:50
Hi Brig. i filled my DS160 form correctly but made a mistake on the visa appointment schedule form. i made a mistake in my passport no and wrote A95 instead of A05. what do i do pls?
May 18, 2017 at 04:03
Correct it??? I don’t advise on non DV cases.
May 17, 2017 at 19:23
Hi and thanks for the info. I believe I have a relatively high case number for Oceania (2018OC17XX) and it looks, based on 2014 and 2015, like my number won’t become current and I won’t be interviewed. Then I just read your article “DV2017 Selectee counts released” and you say there will be enough visas in DV2017 for all, which raised my hopes. I’m not completely clear on this, and wondered whether you could comment on the likelihood of interview for my case number based on your wonderful statistical analyses. Many thanks.
May 18, 2017 at 04:02
DV2017 was under selected. The highest case number in DV2017 is less than 1400. There is risk at your number – but it is too early to say they is no hope.
May 17, 2017 at 19:45
Simon
I was selected legally separated but, I was divorced my previous spouse. At this time I am Planning new marriage so how is if I married my new spouse before I submit DS-260, then I put her information into Spouse? what are the document that I need as evidence my case?
May 18, 2017 at 03:31
You would need to show marriage cert, legal separation papers and divorce papers from marriage number 1 then marriage papers from marriage number 2. It is bound to raise suspicion.
May 17, 2017 at 19:52
Hi Brit,
Thanks for all the helpful info (also apologies if double posting, my original doesn’t seem to have uploaded).
I have been selected for DV-2018 with the number EU12***. I am currently on F1-OPT and unfortunately did not get selected in the H1-B lottery.
So I will be able to apply for green card in November (based on previous bulletins) but my OPT ends in mid August. Is there any way I can bridge this gap without having to leave? I’m currently living in the US and it’s a pretty big upset life disruption considering I’ll have a green card in a couple of months?
Also- do I need my employer to sponsor the green card or just show that I’m not going to become a burden on the state.
Thanks!
May 18, 2017 at 03:30
No, I don’t know of a way to bridge the gap.

May 18, 2017 at 00:54
A question From a person who has not got married to their partner and will not get married before their interview…
Can I win the green card lottery twice?
For example, can I enter the usa to activate my green card and then enter the following years diversity lotteries so that I can increase the chances of my now fiancee soon to be wife a better chance of immigrating faster? Of course she will enter future lotteries to increase her chances of getting to the usa.
If this is a ok scenario and I were to win again, would I have to renounce pr / greencard and go through the 1nl, 2nl interview stages again but obviously with my wife or me as her husband listed in the ds260?
May 18, 2017 at 03:07
No- an existing LPR cannot apply again. They can entyer the lottery, but cannot process if they are selected.
May 18, 2017 at 01:12
hi
i won DV LOTTERY in 2014 and again i won in 2018.2014 i was unsuccessful .will my 2014 interview records will affect the 2018.acutally it was not refused but i had to do other process with Homeland Security and was delayed .
So i want to know will it affect my 2018 interview
May 18, 2017 at 03:05
Well, of course I don’t know why you were delayed, but assuming there was not a denial, it should not affect you.
May 18, 2017 at 03:36
Hi Brit
Am in southafrica, i won the dv 2018, but am facing difficulty to fill the form. due passport issue i lost my passport. still waiting for a new passport. but i need to submit the form earlier. so can i submit it with the lost passport status while waiting for the new one…
Thanks
May 18, 2017 at 04:26
Yes
May 18, 2017 at 04:40
Thanks for answer..
got one question, submitting my ds260 form with the passport number which is lost, what will happen if am book for interview and am with the new passport is out and it got a different number, and i could not changed it on ds260. will it affect me for my interview and my case number is AFOOO315XX. & from cameroon living in southafrica with asylum status
May 18, 2017 at 04:55
Stop overthinking this. Get on with it.
May 18, 2017 at 04:37
So, this is probably a silly question, but…
When we did our application there was a yes/no question about vaccination records. We don’t CURRENTLY have records, and are UNABLE to get childhood records, so we checked “no” and said something to the effect of “childhood vaccination records unavailable”. We figured we would have to start the adult series this year, and take (as current as possible) certificates to the interview as per the instructions.
However, I’m wondering now if the “no” we answered to that question will disqualify us before the interview… obviously a medical pass is required, we kind of thought it went without saying that we’d have to DO the medical – but at THIS time, the correct answer to the question is “no”.
Should we unlock the form and change that to a “yes” and then go do the adult series? Or does this just get addressed with appropriate medical documentation during the interview?
Thanks!
May 18, 2017 at 04:38
No is the correct answer for the reason that you deduced. However, a yes OR no will not be a problem.
May 18, 2017 at 04:44
Hi Simon, My wife has been reading about the I-134 recently and is panicking that we may be refused our visa if we don’t have a US sponsor.
My parents are US Permanent Residents, but they are retiree’s with less than $22k reported on their income taxes and a lot of debt/mortgage. Personally we have around $30,000 USD that we can show in cash asset through bank statements, but my wife is worried that if they ask for the I-134 anyway and we don’t have it, that we’ll lose out on our once in a lifetime opportunity.
I am hesitant to ask US friends to give me all their tax documents etc to do the sponsorship, as that’s pretty personal information to ask of them…
Our interview is going to be in Montreal, Quebec (Canada). As Canada is not a typical DV country, we are additionally concerned that they will ask for the I-134 out of habit, rather than necessity, with their potential lack of experience with DV processes.
What are your thoughts? I mean, the reality is we are both Canadian Citizens, and if things “didn’t work out” in the US, we would drive our butts back to Canada in less than 24 hours and reclaim our free healthcare and resume our business with a cozy 6-figure income rather than apply for food stamps….
Would my parents be worthwhile as sponsors with their limited income? Should we harass friends for their most personal documents and information? Or is it likely that with $30k (and probably more by the time our interview would come up) that, even though it’s a non-typical DV country, that they wouldn’t bring up the I-134?
Thanks! Sorry for the lengthy post.
May 18, 2017 at 04:55
There seems to be an impression that the embassy would somehow mistaken in asking for an I-134. They wouldn’t. That is a reasonable ask and is a part of standard immigration law AND is I the DV lottery FAQ when you entered the lottery.
Now – they may be satisfied with your savings. They may not. An I-134 is to avoid the risk. You can attend the interview with savings. If they want more, they will put you on AP while you get an I-134. So – it will cause delay – that’s all.
May 18, 2017 at 09:35
Hi Simon,
yesterday we had our appointment and all went well, even CEAC shows “Issued”. I am the applicant.
This morning, after only one day, my wife received notification to pickup her documents and passport, and all went fine.
I haven’t got mine yet.
If I log to ais.usvisa-info.com it reads “verify Ds260 State”. And once again I am the applicant, so all should be fine.
having changed my passport number and having he CO updated such number, could the delay be due to that?
In other words, should I simply relax and wait?
Nicola
May 18, 2017 at 13:08
Yes just relax. You might have to contact the courier if you don’t have it within a week or so.
May 18, 2017 at 13:21
Thanks Simon. In the meantime I just updated my ais.usvisa-info.com with the new passport number. Think it could help?
May 18, 2017 at 15:06
Maybe
May 18, 2017 at 09:39
Dear Simon,
Thank you for all the information you provide!
I was selected in the DV2018 and have entered the DS260 and my case number is EU14XXX.
Is there any post here that explains the timeline from where you get the 1NL to the interview?
I understand that it could be difficult to do such a timeline with the range of case numbers.
But I’m trying to get a feel for how long the process is.
Thanks!

I AM ABRAHAM BARTUAH , MY WIFE AND I DID OUR INTERVIEW ON THE 16 OF MAY AND WE WERE TOLD BY THE COUNSELOR THAT WE ARE OK WITH ALL DOCUMENTS AND OUR CASE IS OK . BUT RIGHT NOW SHE WILL TAKE SMALL TIME LIKE 2 TO 3WEEKS TO DO ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESSING AND WILL CALL US BACK IMMEDIATELY FOR US TO CARRY OUR BOOK TO DROP IT FOR OUR VISA. AND SHE TOLD US TO BRING OUR RECEIPT TO VERIFY THAT WE HAVE PAID ALREADY. BUT WHEN WE CHECK OUR CASE STATUS WE NOTICES THAT ONLY ONE AREA WAS ON AP EXAMPLE MRV 2 AP. AND MRV 1 WAS ON READY. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS THE PROBLEM.
May 18, 2017 at 12:53
That isn’t a problem. Just wait.
May 18, 2017 at 13:14
Hello BritSimon,
I’m hoping you can give me some advice on the US address deal in the DS-260. I’ve no family nor friends in the United States, and I’ve contacted the KCC and consulate in my country and neither have actually answered my question.
What should I list as my US address?
Thanks for your help 🙂
May 18, 2017 at 15:05
You have to provide an address on the DS260. Some people use a “random” (but real) address on their form. BUT by the time of interview (or certainly no later than POE) you WILL NEED a real address where someone you trust will accept your Green Card.
May 18, 2017 at 13:30
Dear Simon
I had my interview in South Africa last week and my DV visa was approved. However, my police clearance certificate expires next month. I was given conflicting information from two different people at the embassy – one said I would have to travel to US before my police clearance expires (end June) and one said my police clearance certificate only needed to be current at the time of my interview and I shouldn’t worry. Which is correct?
I am concerned when my visa comes it will only be valid until the time my police clearance certificate expires, which is a month away.
Do I need to apply for a new police clearance? In South Africa it can take months to arrive.
Thanks in advance,
Amy
May 18, 2017 at 15:07
The second person was correct. No need to worry.
May 18, 2017 at 13:56
Dear Simon

Dear Simon,
My fiancee’ has been selected in the DV Lottery 2018.
We have been engaged and live together for 4 years now, and we’d like to go together in the USA. The problem is that we are not legally married. For the moment we are holding back the filling of DS260 because we are getting married next week….I wanted to ask you : The certificate of marriage we must upload it in the DS Form? In the section Add Aplicant is a field where you can attach the certificate of marriage, but other persons have suggested me to NOT attach this document there. Another question: After we submit the application, should we notify via mail the KCC that we have been married?
Thank you so much for the answer
PS. We have heard that in the previous years it wasn’t the option of attachment of any document in the DS form. I was wondering if i can past here the screenshot with that page but apparentily I cant’.

There is no need to keep asking people this question. When you are married, start filling in the DS260 and see what happens. No need to contact KCC.

Hello sir,
First of all I wanted to say that You’re doing a great job Sir and I really appreciate your hard effort.
I had a confusion regarding the DV 2NL. And so I was hoping a feedback from you as i find your explanations clear and straight forward.
I am from Nepal and had been selected in the DV for 2018. My case number is 2018AS000068##. So, I was wondering if my case number is too high and how much probable is it for me to expect for the 2NL?

You should read the link below. For now it is way to early to know anything precise.

Hey Brit, irá Adrian. The worries guy with the missing middle name in the eDV. I had my interview yesterday and everything went fine, the CO kept my passport and said they will send me the sealed packs within 7-10 business days.
Now I looked up my status in the CEAC and it says “AP”. I know those horror storiesof people staying in AP for months.
So is it normal that the day after the interview and an approval the CEAC says “AP” because they have to print the visa etc. or will they make a second check? I am kinda worried. Thanks and Greetings!

It’s Adrian the worried guy*
