Hi Simon, I entered US based on my DV2017 visa and am now LPR. I had to return to my original country for 11 months (it starts from the day i entered US, right?) to sell house and other stuff which is fine based on your article for first time. I have two questions:
1- can I renew my passport now? although i won’t have my GC in my hands when traveling to US next year? it will be with my uncle in US.
2- Can I apply for GC to my mother or I have to be US citizen first?
Thanks
Ibrahim
June 17, 2017 at 15:06
1. Yes. Travel with old and new passports.
2. Citizen.

I submited ds 260 on May 18th and now I read that an university degree is not enough for aplication?
In my contry you cant study on university if you hadnt finished four years at high school .So please tell me do I have to unlock my ds260?
Is it enough to show diplomas from high school at the interview?
June 18, 2017 at 13:26
The instructions in the DS260 ask for the history on schools/Universities attended. You should unlock and provide what is asked.

Hello Simon, I really appreciate your work. You always keep us updated. I would like to ask you a question. I currently completed my ds260 3 weeks ago and my problem is with my addres. I am a student at the university, and declared my current addres, but my friends and I will change this house because we dont like the price of the rent. I also wrote my parents addres in my hometown. Since i have an approximately high case number, 28XXX EU and it will take about a year for the 2NL to come, i am afraid from this house changing that I will do in august. Will this be a problem? Will I receive the 2NL in any of my addreses? Thank you so much, and sorry if I’ve made any mistake while writing, but I cant speak english fluently.
June 17, 2017 at 15:01
Changing the address will make no difference. Relax.
June 17, 2017 at 23:26
So should I email to KCC my new address in august? Or my 2NL will come at my parents address? How will they contact me?
June 18, 2017 at 01:15
They contact you by email, so the address is not too important.

Hi brit , in the dv form application there is a question I couldn’t understand . ” are you claiming the eligibility based on country of birth or country of origin something like that !?? I am from Africa but born in one of middle east countries and in the form I answered ” the based on country of birth “. However I want an advice which one would be the best answer ??? Am I decreasing my chances of winning cause of this answer ??
June 17, 2017 at 15:00
What form? You should not be entering the next lottery right now, because the official entry page is not open.
June 17, 2017 at 15:50
Yeah I know , I was asking about the pervious one
June 17, 2017 at 19:10
Click reply to keep follow up conversations together.
Chargeability is based on country of birth.

Hello Brit,
I have received two degrees (diplomas) during my studies at University – Bachelors and than Masters. After completing Bachelors degree I applied for Masters studies. Do you think that I have to list it twice in DS 260 ? It is the same university and address. Thank you.
June 17, 2017 at 19:08
Once per school/University is fine.
June 17, 2017 at 17:59
Hi brit..

1-ive submitted ds260.
When will they email me?
2-on my birth certificate,my name s a space like this “El hadj”.
But all my other documents there is no space just “Elhadj”.
Is that a problem while the interview?
June 17, 2017 at 18:48

June 17, 2017 at 18:10
Quick Question:
1- If someone a dv winner was denied during the interview, does this have any bearing in applying for tourist visa afterwards? even though having previous visas and visits all compliant with status
2- does the translator of the documents have to be in the same country as the embassy to be interviewed in?
3- there is a required statement by the embassy for the translator to disclaim. does it have to appear on each translated document or is it sufficient to have a single paper from the translator to that regards for all documents?
4- i was married for few days many years ago, and it was annulled by the ex and she told me over the phone, but i do not have any documents to that regards and it was in vegas, what do u suggest?
Thanks and sorry about bothering u.
June 17, 2017 at 18:47
1. Possibly.
2. No
3. Google is amazing… https://www.state.gov/m/dghr/flo/154965.htm
4. If you are a winner did you enter as divorced or married? You need to show marriage divorce paperwork. This is important, it could lead to denial.
June 18, 2017 at 01:17
hi
thank you for all your help,
I entered as divorced, but that marriage was long time ago before my marriage. and for a divorced person do I need the marriage certificate also or divorced certificate is enough?
June 18, 2017 at 02:06
They may ask for both documents.
June 17, 2017 at 18:32
Hi Brit,
I have a question regarding paying the $220 USCIS immigration fees before going to the US.
It looks like you need the following two information:
1. Alien Registration Number (A-number)
2. Department of State Case ID (DOS case ID)
I am doing this for my cousin’s family and they emailed me a USCIS Immigration Fee instruction page which has on the top right two lines (A-Number and DOS case ID) but both are empty. Interesting enough, the instructions on how to create an account and pay the fees require those two numbers (A-Number & DOS case ID). Any idea where I can find them? Shall they talk to the embassy? would it be on their passport immigrant visa stamp page?
Thanks
June 17, 2017 at 18:41
Yes – they have the needed information on their visas, and other documents from the embassy.
June 17, 2017 at 18:42
Thanks Brit. Will ask them to forward it to me.
June 17, 2017 at 19:23
Hi Simon!
I have a question regarding Green Cards – We have arrived in the States but were not able to make their payment so far – could you tell us if it is the date of payment or the date of entry that determines when we will be eligible for US Citizenship?
Thank you in advance,
June 18, 2017 at 02:02
date of entry. But pay the fee asap.
June 17, 2017 at 20:57
Hi Brit, hop you are fine. I have some question from DS 260 form.
1. On work experience: I have different positions from the same company. After filling the present employer, the form asks for other employer only but i have worked in different position but in the same company. so should i list all the position with duplicated address or just add the current position and the date i join the company.
2. I have university degree and I am taking a distance diploma course from institute outside of my country. Do i need to include it in the form. I did not finish the course.
3. If yes how can i add the address of the school. shall i add my exam center address in our country or the institution address which i was not their physically?
.
Thanks for the amazing site. I cant wait to get in US and donate
June 18, 2017 at 01:56
1. JUst one entry with the latest position.
2. I would not enter that course.
3. See 2

And one more question. DS 260 request about establishing vaccination document and i answer no and box appear. what should i fill there? should i fill that i will take the vaccination and present in teh visa interview or…
June 18, 2017 at 01:22
THat you will have the required vaccinations at the medical.
June 19, 2017 at 17:41
Hi Birt! When I completed the ds260 I answered this question saying that I have all the vaccinations my country law requires but I do not have the documentation with me……shall I unlock it to write that i will have the required vaccionations at the medical? Thanks!
June 19, 2017 at 18:27
You don’t need to unlock for that.
June 17, 2017 at 23:20
Hello there… I’m a first time poster and have a question. I have read your information in abundance and it has been really important in helping me understand the process. I have an OC15XX for 2018, and it appears that we might ‘be lucky’ to get called for an interview mid next year (2018). So, my question is/ questions are…What if between NOW (June 2017) and June 2018, we get a job in the USA, move June-July 2018 and enter on an H1 visa? So, BEFORE we get notification of our interview slot? In all likelihood, we might only get notification in July or August of 2018… Clearly, I don’t think I’m a fan of moving on an E3 (although we could get this),but the E3 is a non dual intent visa. So, if we get an E3, and they can see we have a DV application in, they might get a bit suspicious. Do you think entering PRIOR to the actual interview notification is a problem? We would be on an H1. Do we ‘simply’ inform both the consulate when we go for the H1 interview AND then the KCC that we have changed our location and are currently IN the USA? I hope that this makes sense, and I appreciate any insight that you might have… Clearly, we don’t want to screw up our chances. Thanks so much,
Osmosis (apologies about formatting of this – computer had a moment)
June 18, 2017 at 01:20
You are over simplifying.
H1 visas are allocated on a lottery system. ALL the 2018 H1 visas were allocated in April. So – you won’t get an H1 faster than the DV process.
E3 is easier, BUT you would have to enter well ahead of switching to AOS. But since your DV case number is risky, an E3 might be a good idea. If you get current for the DV, just go back to Aus to process as CP.
Realistically, you are
June 18, 2017 at 06:08
Hello again,
I forgot to mention that we are both academics so the H1 visa cap doesn’t apply to us. There’s a special ‘clause’ for academics and the H1 so we don’t contribute to the capped number of H1 ‘norm…
Thanks for your answer above… It appears that regardless we’d have to return to Oz to have the interview for the DV.
Take care,
Osmosis
June 18, 2017 at 13:36
Ahh I see.
So then an H1 route would be fine, but I would suggest you leave the case on the CP processing. In reality you may never get a DV interview, because of your case number. Cutoff in DV2015 was 1490 – and I expect that same ballpark cutoff this year – so you might get a chance if you are low 1500 range.

Hi Brit,
My sponsor went to US as dv winner in 2013. I want to know if he qualifies to be my sponsor because I read in one of ur articles that the sponsor must be a citizen for 5yrs. I am dv selectee fr 2018 anyway. My sponsor will be 5yrs in US in 2018. Do I have a chance or risk about my sponsor.
June 18, 2017 at 04:49
You have never read an article from me where I said a sponsor had to be a citizen. Your friend is fine.

Hello!
I thank you in advance for your answer.
Last October, i applied for the DV2018 and since May 2, 2017, I’ve tried to acces to check my status but i cannot do it. It appears the following message: “The information entered is not valid. Please review the Confirmation Number, your Last/Family Name, and Year of Birth to ensure you have entered them exactly as they appear on your DV Confirmation Page, including punctuation.”
I understand there is a problem and I’m almost know what the problem is, but I don’t know how to fix it. I’m from Latin America so my legal name contains two last name, one first name and two middle names, those are the ones my passport shows. The problem is there is not enought characters available in the page to write my whole name and check my status (i still don’t know if my application was accepted or not). I can only use 34 (with spaces) charaters and my name needs 40 (with spaces).
I read in one of your post, that i might have the possibility to correct some things, including my name, but can i short my name deleting one of my middle names, even if it is my legal one??
I know this is kind of al over the place, but i really appreciate your help.
Again, thank you.
June 18, 2017 at 04:48
If you have a pdf or jpg of the confirmation, send it to me and I will check.

Dear sir, I am DV winner from Afghanistan for 2017, we have been interviewed in Kabul US embassy in the month of December-16 and me as the main applicant was placed on AP. 6 months and 10 days have passed by still I did not even get an update on CEAC from the first day of interview. What should I do now. Our medical have expired and this is really a tough period of long waiting.

All you can do is wait…

1. You or her.
2. I don’t understand
June 18, 2017 at 10:40
Hello Britsimon
My question might be a bit weird… lets assume someone went to the interview, was approved but then does not enter the US within in the time stated on the visa and does not pursue any steps to have another interview (for whatever reason they missed to enter in time). If it’s still the fiscal year of the lottery will they throw that visa back in the pool? Or they don’t track how many visas were(n’t) activated?
June 18, 2017 at 13:28
That would still reduce the available visas. They do track entries, but it would be too late to add back to the pool.
June 18, 2017 at 14:45
Dear Mr. simon,
I Lost my first letter describes as ” You have been selected for further….” and now that letter is replaced by 2NL. I could find the printed one but i copied and past in the word format. May i print and take the copied word format during my interview date or what do you advice me?

June 18, 2017 at 17:51
Hi Simon,
could you please tell me in what case would new immigrants (through dv lottery obviously) be called for ASC appointment for submitting bio-metric fingerprints? That takes serious consideration for those planning to travel back shortly after the first entry. Also, is it possible to not receive endorsement stamp at POE?
Thank you in advance.
June 18, 2017 at 20:11
Just to clarify the second question. Does an immigrant having granted access at the POE by all means get the visa endorsed/stamped at the same time? Or can these to be somehow separated? My concern is to have a proof for re-entry before receiving the green card. Thanks.
June 19, 2017 at 05:01
They always get endorsed.
June 19, 2017 at 04:56
It is rare. It is when the biometrics from the embassy is not correctly stored.
June 19, 2017 at 06:26
What can be done if we are unlucky in that regard? Can this be sorted at the embassy? I want to eliminate all obstacles to avoid delay in receiving GC. At least as much as I can.
June 19, 2017 at 15:03
Nothing can be done to prepare. If it happens you will visit a USCIS office. It doesn’t affect you. Relax.
June 18, 2017 at 18:53
HI i am a liberian ,my high school document has a different last name and i win dv with different last name.i dont know what to do on the Ds 260
June 19, 2017 at 04:59
THe DS260 name should match your passport. Do that!
June 18, 2017 at 20:30
Hello Brit,
I need clarity once again about how much time you are legally allowed to maintain absence since your initial entry into the U.S.
our case:
Activation visit:
Entry 5/9/16 (dd/mm/yy)
Exit 20/9/16
Settlement:
Entry 7/7/17
1) Are we within the allowable period of absence?
2) Is there a specific written law that allows one year of absence for new green card holders after the activation visit?
3) Where can one refer to for this law?
Best,
Ahmed
June 19, 2017 at 05:02
1. Yes
2. It is standard law. Not an exception.
3. Google it.
June 18, 2017 at 20:44
Greetings Simon!
I Need your suggestions garding my DS 260
1.Our streets don’t have specific name or number,so I used name of my University as Street address.
2.Replied NO to the question about…Skilled or unskilled labor, cause I want to study for 4-5
years.
I would like to say thank you for your work and May The Almighty GOD responds for whatever you demanded,Amen!
June 19, 2017 at 05:03
There are no questions there.
June 19, 2017 at 20:20
It is not really a question, but I need your suggestion
1. Does using the University as Street address creates a problem
2.is that a problem NO…?
June 19, 2017 at 22:33
1. No
2. Not that I know of…
June 18, 2017 at 21:32

2. No.
June 18, 2017 at 22:16
Hi ,
I have a question concerning my DS-260 , that in my first application for lottery I wrote my adress containing the following : my village , the nearby city , then my state , then I discovered in my passport and my birth certificate my adress is written as the following : my village , my province then my state and the nearby city is not written in all of document , and the letter of selection is containg my nearby city , what I have to do ??
June 19, 2017 at 05:05
That is no problem.
June 18, 2017 at 22:37
Hello Sir,

Hello,
I won the dv lottery and am now planning to go to us with my family during august to recieve the green card and i have a couple questions;
1- I can only stay there for one month maybe even less, if i dont get the green card during that time, what do i do?
2- i cannot go there this year as i missed applying for university; but i will be able to move there during the next academic year, will my green card be taken away and/or is there any way for me to avoid that from happening if i might need to stay out of the US for more than a year? (at least while i sort everything out)
June 19, 2017 at 05:09
You cannot be absent for more than 1 year with first applying for the re-entry permit – but for that you need to be in the USA for about 6 weeks.
June 19, 2017 at 17:17
Thank you, but regarding my first question, what happens if I can’t get my green card during my stay in america? Can I come back later? If I don’t get my green card during my first stay (assuming that I can come back), do all my family members have to come with me during the second visit? And how long does it usually take for the green card to arrive?
Thank you again in advance
June 19, 2017 at 17:30
Upon first entry to the USA, your temporary visa (from the embassy) is endorsed and is valid as proof of residency for up to 1 year. Before that 1 year, you should have your plastic Green Card (which normally takes up to 3 or 4 months).
Each family member is an LPR in their own right after the first entry. So – you don’t have to travel with them after the activation trip.

Hallo BritSimon,
Thanks for your wonderful forum. I am DV2017 winner from Somalia and have been on AP since 18Jan 2017.My CEAC status showed that I am on AP while my 2 dependent kids are READY all this time. But today, it has been updated and it shows that we are all on AP. What does this mean please. Thanks for the work you do. Much appreciated.
June 19, 2017 at 15:06
It means some more waiting. Check again in a day or two.
June 21, 2017 at 05:53
Dear BritSimon,
Please help me i am very worried. My status still shows am on AP but I have just received an email from the embassy saying that the consulate has just released a document related to our visa application to their courier. What does this mean? Is this a rejection or approval from your experience. HELP.
June 21, 2017 at 06:31
There is no point my trying to speculate. Wait for whatever they send.
June 19, 2017 at 09:00
Hi Simon
I would like to apply for GC and SSN .what are the lists needed to fulfilled? Can I apply SSC without GC? Would you send me the link for GC?
Best regards
June 19, 2017 at 15:07
Are you a dv selectee? Have you been interviewed?
June 20, 2017 at 12:11
Yes I am DV lottery winner .
simon I got visa .Two days ago arrived in USA.
June 20, 2017 at 14:45
OK, so the GC is applied for when you went through immigration at the airport. THe SSN will also be sent automatically IF you selected that option in the DS260. The SSN will take 2 to 3 weeks to arrive, the GC takes longer, sometimes 3 to 4 months.
June 19, 2017 at 12:55
Dear simon
My first entry I choose High school Degree but I have complete Bachelor and master both so can I mention them DS260 both? Does it have any problem if mention DS260?
June 19, 2017 at 15:16
No problem – list what is accurate.
June 19, 2017 at 15:42
Hello
when i filed my ds260 i put an address and now after i have entered the states and paid the USCIS i choose a different address(the one that am actually at)
to which address will my green card be mailed to? if to the ds260 address is there anything i can do to change it?
and any idea how long does it take?
thanks in advance!
June 19, 2017 at 16:39
It is usually sent to the address that was on the DS260. There is no way to change that. It can take 3 to 4 months.
June 19, 2017 at 15:54
Hi Simon,
After I submitted my DS260 form I came to the conclusion that the startdate for my previous address is some months off (I lived at that address since I was 7). Also the official move to our current address is one month off (although we already lived here the month before).
Is this something I have to re-open my forms for?

So this will not cause any problem during background checks and at the interview? Sorry if I ask again but I do not want something small like this ruin our chances on success.

Hello Simon,again God bless you for the help you offer dv selectees everyday.I am a dv 2018AF10*** and my employment contract at my work place is about to be renewed and this time there is a three year fully paid master’s degree offer accompanying it.The master’s semester begins this year September.My questions;
1)Should I commence the master’s program come September?
2)When is my interview likely to be given my CN and given that I already submitted my DS-260 on 10th June ?
3)Will starting a new degree be a problem at the embassy during my interview?
4)Should I unlock my DS-260 form come September and update the degree?or will the 2nls have already gone out?
Thanks in Advance.

1. That is up to you.
2. Probably November to January.
3. I don’t know.
4. You won’t have earned a degree by then, so no need to update.

Hello Brit,
I have two related quistions, noting that i have already submitted my DS260
1- i have wrote “high school” just without diploma or certificate words is that fine
2-the dates of high school attendance i have mentioned the last year only as i was in a new school last year, is this ok ? Understood for the processing?
Thank you
June 19, 2017 at 22:25
1. That is ok
2. Your DS260 should have more than the one school in your case. You should unlock and correct it to add the old school details.

Thanks for your feedback,
but if i had already mentioned a bachelor’s also, Moreover a work experience that is acceptable for the criteria, do i still need to unlock application?
Your answer is really needed, thank you

I only answer questions about DV lottery cases.

Hi Brit,
We have got a daughter before our marriage. She won the dv lottery of 2018 as a single(she didn’t filled the form including us as a family). Now she has scar on abdomen while giving birth to baby and we havenot married yet. In this case how can I go with her with our daughter?
June 20, 2017 at 00:45
So – she entered as single but did not list her daughter. I assume your daughter was born before the DV entry in October last year. In that case she has broken the rules and will be disqualified.

Hello, Mr Brit
i have three questions
1. i want to change somenthing i should change in the form, can i request for it to be unlocked? or is it too late? i’m a dv 2017 winner
2. if i still can do it, would this cause a delay for them to schedule an interview then? or it doesn’t matter?
3. how can I unlock it?
Thanks for your help, it would be appreciated
June 20, 2017 at 01:30
*IF* they have already scheduled the interview (even if they haven’t sent the 2NL, but are about to do so), then they won’t unlock it. If the case is not in August interviews, you could still unlock, but at this point you should only unlock if you really need to do so.
June 20, 2017 at 01:31
ok, thanks, but would this cause any delay?
June 20, 2017 at 02:30
It depends. Re-read my answer.
