Hello Mr Brit.
I am 22 year old Malaysian applying for DV lottery. Not officially a winner but I am committed to take the every chance possible to win it. I applied last year October, which the result will be announce this May.
So I have few questions;
1. Do I need to use the same picture I used to apply on the DV Lottery during interview?
2. I am young and don’t have much property as well savings since I just started working and I am only coming from a mid class family. My boyfriend live in USA with official passport. He is working, he is building his credit history very well. We planned to make him as my sponsor there. I read somewhere that they will put me apart with a special agent for the interview if they knew that I have a plan of getting married afterwards after visa issuance. But I am left with no choice. He is the only person I know there that can be my sponsor. Kindly advise..
January 10, 2018 at 16:51
Your chance of winning the lottery is less than 1 time in 100 years. If you win, you can ask questions.
January 10, 2018 at 15:46
hi brit
Might you help me.
What is the best way to prove that it will not become a public charge in the United States?
Demonstrate money, support assets, etc., or an affidavit of support from a family member residing in the United States
January 10, 2018 at 16:46
Please read this explanation

Hi Simon
Happy New year to you.
What’s your thoughts on following questions?
1 – ds260. Should the names of cities and regions / counties be translated to English? Some major cities usually have it’s English translations ie. Warsaw. But at same time smaller ones or villages don’t. Should I use original names for cities and counties or try and translate what I can. I could end up with confusing mixture of translated and none names I. Addresses.
2 – how detailed should be the explanation of the previously refused tourist visa?
As far as I remember I never got the reason why I didn’t get visa in past.
Sorry if those were answered before but I couldn’t find anything relevant.
Regards
Seb
January 10, 2018 at 16:45
1. Use original names.
2. Very brief.
January 10, 2018 at 20:51
Thanks a lot.
As always your help is much appreciated.
Not sure if not too late to submit ds 260 with number eu00008xxx but maybe visas will not run out bu thw time i get the interview.
When do you think I can expect interview? May June?
January 10, 2018 at 21:12
I don’t know how long they will take to process your DS260. It must be processed before scheduling you.
January 10, 2018 at 16:15
Good afternoon!
Dear friend I have interview how should I change my sponsor?
Tell me please
January 10, 2018 at 16:42
If you mean the address at which you have given in the USA, that can be updated at the interview.
January 10, 2018 at 17:08
You know when I fill dv 260, I have wrote his name his address his phone number, but now he is saying I can not fil for you affidavit of Support, I have find the woman who is agree to fill it, how should I do it, I should say it in the interview that I have changed my sponsor?
January 10, 2018 at 17:09
You can present an I-134 from another person (i.e. one is the address, the other is the I-134
January 10, 2018 at 17:22
But she is living in an other city.
Her address is different. It will be any problem?
I should say it in during my interview that I have changed my sponsor in USA ?
January 10, 2018 at 17:32
No problem. Relax and stop overthinking.
January 10, 2018 at 18:04
Thank you very much
January 10, 2018 at 18:53
i applied for visa d lottery 2018. I copied and pasted my confirmation number as well as screen shot. Every time i try to check it says number invalid, i tried the forgot number section but says my name is not valid. Is this just a case of a computer mistake, something that happens and to forget it, or is there something i can do.
January 10, 2018 at 19:11
The most likely explanation is that you are doing “something” wrong – many millions of other people managed to check their results. However, if you really can’t check, there is nothing else you can do. If you want – you can send me the screenshot of the confirmation details and I will check for you.

I paid for the visa fee which is
$660 for me and my spouse at the day of the ntervew but were not interviewed because I didn’t have the ds260 of the spouse and since then I haven’t been able to fill it out,
1, does the case number change after being sent to the embassy
2, how to get the updated case number
3, does the embassy give a receipt after paying the fee
4, when I enter the case number starting with 2018 on the ceac website, lt reads that It is invalid
Thank you
January 10, 2018 at 20:35
1. No
2. N/A
3. I imagine most embassies do
4. Are you removing the leading zeros?
January 10, 2018 at 20:57
Hello sir
Please due to money I want to go to the interview alone .if by chance I got the visa when can I take my family .because my family name was on the interview list
January 10, 2018 at 21:10
If you don’t include them in the DV interviews, it will take at least 2 years to bring them later (and be much more complex and costly).
January 10, 2018 at 22:36
I enter the case with leading zeros and the case open but when I enter the spouse date of birth, It says Invalid
When I sent a mail to Accra embassy, they replied that my case has been updated that I should login to my account to view the details but I log in with the case number , I am unable to fill out the spouse DS 260, help me please
January 10, 2018 at 23:00
You log in to your case with your case number and YOUR date of birth.
January 10, 2018 at 23:07
I enter with complete case number and see that It is not possible to edit because It shows completed,
1, how can I, fill out the spouse DS 260
2, which procedures do l follow because our tests will expire soon
January 10, 2018 at 23:13
You need to start taking this seriously. You must have seen me write 1000 times about unlocking a DS260. Locked cases say completed. You need to unlock your DS260 – for that you normally need to ask KCC but in your case the embassy have to unlock for you. Again, as I have told you before, you need to work with the embassy. Talk to them. Go there, Phone. Whatever you need to do. Do that!
January 10, 2018 at 23:09
Hello,
My husband is a derivative. He started a new job. Should we unlock to add this info-knowing that we are supposed to be current in the next VB-?
Thanks in advance.
January 10, 2018 at 23:14
No need.
January 10, 2018 at 23:25
I thank you very much for your counseling, I will do as you advise me because kcc says like should provide them with the case number starting with ACCRA for them to locate my case, It shows that the case changes after reaching the embassy
January 10, 2018 at 23:30
No. It. Doesn’t.
January 11, 2018 at 01:23
Hello ,Is respecting B1/B2 visa by never overstaying it ,considered a good plus during the dv lottery interview ?
January 11, 2018 at 02:55
No. You are *expected* to obey laws.
January 11, 2018 at 07:11
Hello Brits,
I trust you are doing good.I have heard that Congress have revised some new rules on the DV lottery. Please do you have the updates? If you do please let us know
January 11, 2018 at 14:31
There are discussions, but no changes as of yet.
January 11, 2018 at 08:42
Hey Brit,
Does the “Certificat de Mariage” (wedding certificate) has to be translated in english, when I will upload it with my DS260, and for the interview?
Thanks
January 11, 2018 at 14:33
Not for the upload, yes for the interview.
January 11, 2018 at 14:33
Ok thanks 🙂
Enjoy your day.
January 11, 2018 at 10:13
Hello Brit …….
happy new year
My sister won the dv 2018 and she unlock her ds260 for and attach her boyfriend by writing kcc that she marry but after sometime she decided to tell kcc that she want to remain single on her program…… What your advice and what is important to do now?
January 11, 2018 at 14:37
Start learning what “the truth” means.
She cannot remove a derivative’s DS260 once that form is added. So now she must explain to the embassy why she lied, and try and convince them that she was lying before, but is now telling the truth.
January 11, 2018 at 10:17
Hey Brit
I already have my visa but the person who file my affidavit is not in the state currently he in Liberia where I am …..so is it possible that I can travel to the state to any of my relatives or friend in other states until he return or what can I do
January 11, 2018 at 14:38
Yes.
January 11, 2018 at 11:44
Question relating to my son who needs to complete his studies in South Africa. We are 2017 DV winners – done our activation trip to the US in June 2017. So, we had a year from June 2017 to relocate – busy selling up and we are now finally moving to US permanently April this year (2018). My son, now 21 (was under 21 during activation trip) is a final-year Mechanical Engineering student at a University in SA. He wants to complete his studies and will only be able to join us permanently in the US by the end of 2018. Do we need to apply for a re-entry permit for him or is there another way to ensure he does not lose his permanent residency status due to the fact that he did not enter within the one-year period? The problem is, we know that he needs to be in the US to apply for the re-entry permit and then he must wait for several weeks for biometrics appointment – he will miss essential university classes, term test and exams which could pose a problem re. his studies? Thank you – if you could advise if we should try to work through an immigration lawyer to help us maybe speed up the process (earlier appointment?) or obtain approval for him to maybe apply in the US but then to return and do his biometrics here at the Consulate in SA, if that is an option?
January 11, 2018 at 14:44
No a lawyer won’t help. He can keep the GC alive by re=entering. Ideally take a couple of trips to keep absences below 6 months. You will be there and establishing a home – so he will show that proof as evidence that he is establishing a home if questioned, BUT, typically absences under 6 months get almost no questioning.
January 11, 2018 at 13:48
Hi brit i’m the one of selecte from ethiopia my case no is AF15*** my first quiz is when it is caming my 2NL? the second quiz is i was fill wrong date and year of my wife age in my first application form, however after i try to amend it on DS260 pages on may 2017, and after i submited that the previous one is apeared again, what shall i do? it’s a problem for interview time.
January 11, 2018 at 14:51
1. Wait and see
2. That should not be a problem.
January 11, 2018 at 14:25
Hi Simon, Are you informed about the re-entry permit process? I might get a Job contract extension for one year and the professional experience will be a plus in the field I am working at the moment. A job and a pending surgery is reason enough to request a re-entry permit? I need to proceed also with a surgery in UK (that will be free and in the US i will not be covered). Please let me know where could I get full information if possible. Thanks in advance.
January 11, 2018 at 14:53
I don’t know how they evaluate reasons on the I-131
January 11, 2018 at 15:22
Thanks Brit! If the congress approves the draft law on the elimination of the lottery, can it affect dv 2018 and dv 2019. Thank you Brit Simon.
January 11, 2018 at 16:44
Not DV2018, but possibly DV2019
January 12, 2018 at 00:23
May I ask, more out of curiosity than to challenge, why you are certain any changes won’t affect DV2018 for numbers not yet current?
E.g the proposal in front of Trump today included “ending the DV lottery’program” – I just wonder why they couldn’t institute an immediate halt as opposed to applying proposed changes solely to DV2019? Feel free to link if you have discussed this point previously (apologies if so). Thanks!
January 12, 2018 at 01:28
If you read the bills like the one you mention, they always describe an effective date – and this one would start on the first day of the fiscal year AFTER the bill is introduced. So – even if it was passed, it would not affect DV2018.
January 11, 2018 at 15:44
Hello Simon, please I didn’t understand the ceac analysis very well, for instance I am AF331xx please can you tell me how many cases are before me given the calculated number of holes. Thanks

Hello brit, a retired ( in August 2017 )professor agreed me to send I134 for the February interview. He said he has sufficient income but I wonder how can he fill his employer details. Should I find someone else?
Is photo ID = Biological page of passport ?
Thanks..
January 11, 2018 at 16:43
1. Yes maybe.
2. Yes
January 11, 2018 at 15:55
I have uploaded my marriage certificate but i want change the certificte becouse of name error and my ds 260 is now unlock so
how and where i can chage
January 11, 2018 at 16:43
Are you taling about uploading a new wedding cert. I don’t know if that is possible.
January 11, 2018 at 16:32
Hi Brit,
When we expect next visa bulletin?
Thank you
January 11, 2018 at 16:40
Same as EVERY month. By the 15th.
January 11, 2018 at 17:11
Is there a way someone can complete the DS 260 form without uploading the marriage certificate. I don’t remember doing that.
January 11, 2018 at 17:15
People only add a marriage cert when they enter as single and marry after the initial entry.
January 11, 2018 at 20:30
hi
I am in the US now where I had validated my DV visa, I have couple of questions please and sorry in advance for the trouble:
1- if i wanted to transfer money from my bank to the us bank now, will i have to pay any taxes on them?
2- when do i start filing for income tax? i am 2018 winner and i came to the us 01/2018
3- i have a fiance if i want to marry her, how long will it be before I can file for her residence visa?
Thanks so much
January 11, 2018 at 20:54
1. Tax is based on INCOME, not money movements.
2. You will file for the 2018 year (due by April 2019)
3. Once you have established yourself you can marry and file for her. That will then take around 2 years.
January 11, 2018 at 20:59
Thank you so much for the clarification, one more question pls: how many times I can travel with the visa i have on my passport? the PO told me there is long backlog on GC printing and told me my visa is valid for one year. can I travel on it without the GC more than once? thanks
January 11, 2018 at 21:04
“told me my visa is valid for one year”. Correct. No limit on the number of entries.
January 11, 2018 at 21:10
Hello Brit, good day.
Please can the immigration officers at the port of entry prevent a pregnant woman with dv visa from entering the USA just because she is pregnant?
January 11, 2018 at 21:14
Where do you get these crazy ideas from??? Of course they won’t do that.
January 11, 2018 at 21:23
Is the guarantor required in Sudan because I am 18 and will live with my uncle
January 11, 2018 at 21:24
I-134
January 11, 2018 at 21:33
I’m not certain whether that embassy insists on an I-134, or whether they accept a close host relationship. Because I am not certain, my advice is to get the I-134
January 12, 2018 at 00:33
Just out of curiousity, does a case number determine what part of the month the interview will likely fall into? For example, if the previous bulletin was 10,000 and the curren bulletin is 12,000 then would a case number 10100 expect to interview at the beginning of the month? Or are the two totally independent in your experience?
January 12, 2018 at 01:29
No – totally independent.
January 12, 2018 at 00:36
JadefesMorocco
I am following news about immigration law on the US. They are about to change the law concerning DV. Is that going to affect 2018 beneficiaries? Thank you Britisimon.

Dear Simon,
I don’t remember the address of the apt. I stayed when I was in college. So I put my home address on DS260. I am not sure should I correct them on DS260. 1.Will this be a problem for my interview? ? 2.If I don’t correct it on DS260, when they ask me about this at interview, what should I tell them? Thanks a lot!
January 12, 2018 at 06:06
1. No
2. That you wrote as well as you could remember.
January 12, 2018 at 06:17
Thank you Simon for the reply! I have solved about 800 CAPTCHAS this evening and found it’s actually very easy. Will keep doing it in the future.
January 12, 2018 at 17:14
Where are folks solving the CAPTCHAS? I have been to the scraping site a few times in the last couple of days and it still says “ALL DONE!” and doesn’t give me any CAPTCHAS to solve. Is there a new link?
January 12, 2018 at 17:40
The system has some parameters for when captchas a needed to be refreshed. So – sometimes it will say all done, then a day or two later it will have captchas to solve. If people can just come back and check every so often, we will keep the data refreshed. Once the VB goes out we will want to get solving to find out how many cases were scheduled.
January 13, 2018 at 04:15
I added a small info panel that shows how many captchas to expect in 1, 4, 12 and 24h, provided that all captchas are currently solved. This should give you the rough estimate when to revisit the scraper page.

Please, please, please Relax!
You have no time to complete another one – so don’t worry about it.
January 12, 2018 at 15:49
Simon in this condition how are the chances that i will be denied?
I just find out that the sponsor did not have filed yet form 1040 for 2016 and has sent me the ones from 2015
I am screwed right?
Thnx. Looking forward to hear from you

Hi Brit,
Can someone living in USA be a sponsor for two different DV winners?
Thank you,
Era
January 12, 2018 at 10:52
Both of the winners married with no children so this means the US citizen will need to sponsor 4 persons in total, what should her income be? Note: The first winner and his wife got the VISA few days ago, me (dv winner) and my husband are expecting the interview on May 2018, in our DS 260 Form we declared the same sponsor as the other couple.
January 12, 2018 at 15:21
It’s a bad idea.

January 12, 2018 at 15:10
1. Huh?
2. No problem.
January 12, 2018 at 11:53
Dear Simon,
I have a quick question for you, it may seems very obvious, and I am very late to ask this question but I have a terrible doubt concerning this.
I have two nationality; swiss and French, I was born in France (with both nationalities at birth) and I currently live in switzerland. I have entered the lottery with my swiss passport. But I have been told that you should always play in the country you were born.
So, is my application at risk because of that, or should I just stop reading about the DV lottery on other forums then yours ;).
Thank you very much for beening such a great help for all of us ! I really don’t know how I could have understand the DV system without you!
Sincerly,
An applicant.
January 12, 2018 at 15:06
The lottery asks for place of birth. The nationality or passport you hold is unimportant. Because both countries are in EU, it doesn’t cause you a problem.
January 12, 2018 at 12:43
Dear Brit,
I had interview in 14th of dec, as my spouse was already in usa CO has requested me to provide additional documents to prove relationship with my wife and proof of communication made with her, CO has given me 221g form mentioning that too. I had submitted entire documents along with passport on 21st of december since then status of my case on CEAC website was ‘Administrative process’, they had first case update in 4th of jan and again CEAC update with case update on 10th of jan with status ‘READY’, i am in confusion what does Ready mean as i had already completed my interview , does the ready status gives mean is it positive sign for me on visa?, pls suggest.

The laws haven’t changed, but if they do they cannot affect DV2018, but could affect DV2019.

Dear Simon
I have a concern that I would like to consult you, I am pre-selected in the DV-2018 visa lottery, with the case number SA23xx, however in February 2017 I paid the consular fee for the tourist visa (B1 / B2), much earlier to learn about being selected in the lottery; In my country, Venezuela, the appointments for tourist visas were suspended, which is why I had not been scheduled for an interview, in May of 2017 I learned that I was shortlisted for the lottery, now in December 2017 I received an email from the US Embassy in my country, that the appointment for the tourist visa had been approved, being scheduled for January 19, 2018, my question is: attend this tourist visa appointment will affect my process in the lottery ?, or could attend without any concern, because some people think that they are totally independent processes.
I would be very grateful that you can help me with your comments.

No problem to attend the B1/B2 interview.
However, you should understand that your case number is quite high, so you might never get a DV interview anyway.

No – but your spouse will not be processed unless you create a DS260 for him/her.

My question is probably trivial but I don’t want to be considered as lying when I have no intention to and lose my chance.
I had started my master’s degree in 2008 and I quit in 2011 without writing my thesis. (I was successful in the classes) Now last October, I went back to school and said I wanted to write my thesis and graduate.
So now to DS-260. It is actually 1 school. But I gave a big break. If I write it on 2 different entries, the system makes me count it as 2. If I make one entry, then it looks as if I was a student the whole time.
What would you do?
January 12, 2018 at 17:38
Count it as 2.

1,How do you create ds260 for the spouse once you are scheduled and have already paid for the visa fee
2, I sent an email to accra embassy but always reply that my case has been updated. How do you know that a case is updated while it still show completed
January 12, 2018 at 18:05
Only the embassy can help with that. Please contact them and be very clear about the completed (locked) status.
