Hi Simon,
Both my spouse and I got our PhDs from the US nine years ago, and we left the US immediately and have worked in three different countries, including the middle east.
1. We do not want to bother our friends to be our sponsor. We have enough funding to prove that we can support ourselves. Do you think it will cause a problem?
2. My spouse is the main applicant, but the source of the funding will be under my name. Will this be a problem?
3. This may seem like a dumb question. By showing my spouse’s PhD degree certificate will automatically justify the high-school degree requirement. Right?
Thank you very much for your time.
March 14, 2018 at 19:23
Hello Inci,
I’m sure that Brit will give you the best answer, I’m just here to share my experience related with your first question.
When our financial documents were collected, officer at the consulate(Turkey) only took my wife’s bank account transactions, retirement funds etc. because she is the main applicant and they didn’t take the financial documents under my name.
One last note, I dont know it will make any difference in your case but we married after the lottery. Maybe its ok to provide financial evidence under your spouse’s name if you have been married before your initial entry.
March 14, 2018 at 20:06
Every case is different. Embassies are also different.
March 15, 2018 at 05:04
Hi Burak, thank you very much for your input. We got married a long time ago. I hope your interviews went smoothly.
March 15, 2018 at 08:33
You are welcome, we got our visas and hope you will get yours soon.
Another interview note that may help you. Consulate Officer accepted my wife’s university diploma, did not want any additional documents for the educational requirements such as high school diploma and only interested with main applicant’s educational documents.
March 15, 2018 at 14:57
Hi Burak, congratulations for your visa.
How much did you show in your bank account for two applicants? What did you answer for “where do you live?” question?
Thank you.
March 15, 2018 at 19:06
Hi Mutlu, Total of 22k in dollars and CO did not ask where are we living, she asked which state we are planning to move in US, our occupations, how did we met, how long we know each other and how long we have been married thats all
March 16, 2018 at 06:05
Hi Burak, sorry for my grammar error. How to answer “which state are you planning to move” question?
March 16, 2018 at 14:33
Answer questions with the truth – YOUR truth.
March 16, 2018 at 15:37
Hi Burak, I decided to California.
Yes Brit, I know. I’m asking this question because I try to understand, how much money I need to show in my bank account for CA for two people.
If I can get appointment, I will show $20.000 in my bank account. I have pension insurance and if I need more money, I will turn in to cash my insurance.
Thank you for help.
March 16, 2018 at 15:47
That might be enough to get approval – but be aware CA has some very expensive areas.
March 16, 2018 at 08:50
If you have not decided where to live yet, U.S. address information in your DS-260 which Green Card will be sent could be the best choice, we did the same.
March 18, 2018 at 10:25
HI Burak, Thank you very much again for your extra tips. So glad to hear that you’ve already got your visas. Our interview will be in May. One related question about financial documents. Is it ok to show our e-statements or the official bank statements with the bank’s stamps are required? Your input is much appreciated.
March 14, 2018 at 20:09
1. That decision varies by embassy and by case. The safest approach is an I-134 – but most embassies will accept proof of savings.
2. No
3. No it doesn’t automatically work that way. Some COs stick to the rules and ask for High School proof. Best to over-prepare.
March 15, 2018 at 05:08
Dear Simon,
Thank you for all these suggestions. It is always wise to ask questions, not to assume things.
Another question related to I-134, does the sponsor need to provide other materials besides filling the forms?

Good day Simon and thanks for your enormous help on this blog. I am a winner (principal) of 2018 Dv lottery with case number 2018AF32XXX. My question is my spouse who is a derivation has schooled and lived in other countries. For example he lived in Nigeria as a student for 6years and also in the UK for 2 years.
I wish to know if he has to provide a police record from all these places.
Thank you for your time.
March 16, 2018 at 13:52
Yes – that is clear if you read the instructions.
March 14, 2018 at 19:05
my Case (I551 – PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD) I paid the fees for me and my family on last January 16 and enter US january 19 ,all permanent resident cards of my family have been mailed except my card.USCIS have indicated opening an USCIS account and inquiring through it.When opened the account I was surprised that an ASC appointment was secheduled for me on last 22 February and was not mailed to my address .Even though that Case status is (In Process USCIS has accepted your application, petition, or requestfor processing) Now I can not specify what I have to do ?do I have to rescheduled an appointment ?or not?and can I changed appointment location to US embassy abroad?
March 14, 2018 at 20:07
I only answer DV lottery questions. For card production – contact USCIS.
March 14, 2018 at 19:40
Good afternoon, sir, I’m the winner of South America, my case number is 150X, do you think I still have an opportunity to interview?, thank you very much.…
March 14, 2018 at 20:03
Probably – wait and see.
March 14, 2018 at 19:43
My case number is 2018EU31XXX.
Can you tell me about our chance ? Do we have a chance for this summer ? I am from Azerbaijan. Thank you.
March 14, 2018 at 20:03
I’m working on an article to explain – so for now – wait and see.
March 14, 2018 at 20:16
Guys, @rxy, tom, carlos, the holes after CN 18xxx will be between 55% and 60% on 1000 CN’s and like this till 39xxx. For the first 12 months the holes were around 20%. Did you think about that?
March 14, 2018 at 20:20
yes- of course
March 14, 2018 at 21:23
I think the holes were taken into account. But I still think there’s is more than one thing to these facts missing if there is 20950 cases and there is only 18300 visa available, I think we need around 2600 cases no show or denials to get to big cn. I’m fighting with my head and numbers drive me crazy
March 14, 2018 at 21:28
@tom- have you figured out if your phone has whatsapp? Join our group!
March 14, 2018 at 21:32
Rxy , I tried , but I can’t. It tells not enough capacity. I trying to convince my sister to download it in her phone?
Cause sometimes I’m embarrassed to comment my question in this blog for everyone one to see . I’m horrible at math and tech
March 14, 2018 at 22:50
Just delete some of apps you dont use or downaload your images and videos to your computer and try to install whatsapp. If does not work you can download whatsapp and install to a computer and register by your number.
March 15, 2018 at 06:37
I’ve taken everything into my consideration while doing analysis and calculation.
March 14, 2018 at 20:27
Hi,
I did my interview on March 5th – was told it was approved by the officer (had all docs together and would have no issues passing background check) and that I’d get my passport in around 1 week. Given it’s a little longer than a week and I hadn’t heard anything I checked my status – shows “ready”.
I emailed the embassy and they said “We have reviewed our records and you case is under administrative processing, no further action is required, you will receive an email when your passport is dispatched”.
I know you said in your guide it’s normal for cases to go into AP for a couple days as part of regular processing time but at what point should I be concerned that this is heading for ‘additional administrative processing’, and would i be specifically informed of that if that’s the case beyond a response email?
It has been 7 working days since my interview.
Any advice (or reassurance) would be much appreciated, and I’m aware there’s a patient element to all of this 🙂
March 14, 2018 at 20:44
From the reply you received, it appears the embassy decided to put your case on AP. Time for AP varies wildly – and it is not possible to predict how long it will take or the outcome.
March 14, 2018 at 20:56
Ok, thanks for that.
Any thoughts on why it might have gone to AP without any notice or request for additional docs or info? I don’t think there’s anyone I can ask about it beyond a generic response from the embassy…
I’m just a little baffled as I can’t think of any reason why it wouldn’t be a pretty straightforward one based on my background, especially given the officer very pleasantly approved it in person.
March 14, 2018 at 21:31
NY ViSA,
I had my interview on the 7th and everything was approved. On the 8th, my case moved from ready to AP. Its been on AP till today when it changed to ISSUED.
March 14, 2018 at 21:45
Thanks for the comment Xray, and Congratulations!… I hope mine is a similar situation and what they described as administrative processing is just regular visa processing with a similar time frame to you.
March 14, 2018 at 21:46
I guess just a little odd that it hasn’t changed from “Ready” on CEAC even though they said AP by email. Maybe I’ll wake up to a surprise “Issued”
March 14, 2018 at 21:44
I have no idea. It may not even be correct – most cases have a VERY brief pseudo AP period that lasts a day or two – so there is a chance their response isn’t a true reflection of the situation. Check CEAC in a few days.
March 14, 2018 at 21:47
Thanks! As always the help and time is greatly appreciated.
March 14, 2018 at 21:27

March 14, 2018 at 21:52
this word mean that is risk and you don’t want to make me more dissappointed
March 14, 2018 at 22:00
No – it means wait and see!
March 14, 2018 at 22:36
I requested that my DS-260 be re-opened and I made some corrections. How long does it take them to resend letter for AOS?
Thank you.
March 14, 2018 at 22:48
They (KCC) don’t resend a letter for AOS cases – so I have no idea what you are talking about.
March 15, 2018 at 01:31
Hi Brit,
I am new to this whole DV lottery process. In regards to submitting the DS-260,
1) When should I submit DS-260 if i receive a case number?
2) If i receive a high case number, should I wait till my case number is eligible for interviewing before submitting DS260?
Thanks.
March 15, 2018 at 02:15
Are you a DV2018 selectee???
March 15, 2018 at 04:04
I entered DV 2019. I just wanted to know when i should submit the form if i do end up getting a case number.
March 15, 2018 at 04:38
It’s a lottery. See if you win, then think about it.
March 15, 2018 at 02:11
Good evening! I come to ask you for a little clarification, I was selected at GREEN CARD 2018 I have already passed my interview and gave me the letter (221) g that I missed a paper. I returned to the embassade with the missing paper and they took as well as my passport and told me that they will call me back after it’s been 3 months since I did not get their news I do not know what to do, s
March 15, 2018 at 02:20
Unfortunately you can only wait. You could ask them – but they will probably just tell you to wait.
March 15, 2018 at 02:55

dear Brit,
I read at forums that the consul has demanded affidavit of support i134 at the same time they had a document the confirming bank account. why? what became the reason that the consul has demanded this document?
March 15, 2018 at 06:03
To confirm you will not become a public charge in the USA
March 15, 2018 at 12:41
thanks! as I have noticed, this document is demanded not from all. I would like to know what can become the reason that the consul demands it?

It doesn’t matter whether you do or don’t add that.
March 15, 2018 at 08:26

Hello brit i lost my medical exam envolope while i was coming to my city on train. I still have only vaccination papers. What shoud i do now ? I have ibnterview 28 this month thank u
March 15, 2018 at 17:59
If you mean the medical exam you had for the DV process you will need to get a replacement of the report.
March 15, 2018 at 09:46
my husband won the 2018 lottery,
what is the procedure if I got pregnant, considering that I will not be able to pass the medical examination (X Ray),
Am I going to risk not immigrating with him?
March 15, 2018 at 14:04
The XRay can still be performed on a pregnant woman – they shield the abdomen.
March 15, 2018 at 11:35
Hi Brit . i didnt ask question correctly ..We married at 2015 year . my wife took my surname ..but when i registered dv lottery i wrote there my wifes maiden surname ..at the wifes pasport has written my surname .. could it be make any problem ?

March 15, 2018 at 11:56
Hello Sir, I hade my interview in Ukraine in February, the officer said me we will wait for your medical results and he asked me do I need Pasport I said yes I have vacation
He backed me Pasport and said when you will in Ukraine back Pasport. Now I backed I did not backed Pasport because I have to fly soon. The medical results will be in April. Never mind if I back Pasport in 10-12 of April?
Thanks
March 15, 2018 at 13:54
Your case will be delayed.
March 15, 2018 at 15:15
Why it will be delayed? Medical results will be in 14 or 16 of April
March 15, 2018 at 17:50
Because you had a visa allocated to your case to be used in February. When February ended, that allocated visa was forfeited, so, once you are ready, they will THEN ask for a visa to be allocated – and that can take a while.
March 15, 2018 at 20:31
Should I write to the embassy that I have a vacation in the end of the March and will send my passport to you on the April
Thank you very much for your support
March 15, 2018 at 20:49
You can, but the delay is already inevitable.
March 15, 2018 at 14:23
Hello Simon,
I have my interview next month and I’m preparing my documents.
Could you please let me know how old could be the date of this documents ?
I mean, if I get my documents one month before the interview , is it still ok ? (I couldn’t find the answer in FAQ).
to all moroccans ,
Please if you are reading my comments and you are in some whatsapp group to exchange information about the interview , please let me know on [email protected]
thank you
March 15, 2018 at 17:55
It is normal to prepare documents when notified for interview – so yes that is OK.
March 15, 2018 at 14:31
Hi Brit,
I have a question I do not find the answer to.
It looks like my number will be up for interview in June. Last November we’ve made a trip to the US. This trip is not in my DS260 file because I submitted them already in June last year.
Should I re-open my DS260 to add this trip?
Thanks a lot for your support.
March 15, 2018 at 17:54
It is not essential – that already have that info.
March 15, 2018 at 15:01
Good Day Brit, how’re you?
My husband and I are DV2018 winners and holders of green cards since February 2018. We activated our status in December 2017 and plan to permanently migrate in December 2018.
As such, do we file US tax returns for 2017 on the income we earned in our home country?
March 15, 2018 at 17:52
Yes, because you became LPRs in December 2017, so you need to file a report for 2017.
March 15, 2018 at 15:09
Hi Brit
Thanks for all the support and assistance you give
I have already received my Visa all credits to you for your immense help
However, could you please explain if you can the significance of the stars found on the visas
My 1st daughter and I have 2 stars each whiles my wife and second daughter all have one star each
Thanks
March 15, 2018 at 17:51
You don’t need to worry about this – it is probably just a difference in the length of the name.
March 15, 2018 at 15:22
Brit,
Do You still believe EU is possible to go up to 36-37k or you changed your predictions based on slow pace in last 3 VBs.
March 15, 2018 at 16:11
Hi sir,are all african numbers start with 30000?could you please explain this please ?Thanks you .
March 15, 2018 at 16:30
If u mean case numbers then no mine is AF20xxx.
March 15, 2018 at 17:48
No – that is not correct. Each region starts at 1 – and AF max number is over 50000.
March 15, 2018 at 16:52
Brit, I’m scheduled for my appointment in the first week of May- SA region.
I’m a bit concerned that my wife is listed as a beneficiary on the 2NL seeing as we indicated that she is a US Legal Permanent Resident already.
What to do?
March 15, 2018 at 17:46
Discuss it at the interview. It’s not a problem.
March 15, 2018 at 19:04
Thanks Brit. My wife already filed an i130 indicating she would act as my sponsor for that application last year. Now, I see they’re asking for the affidavit of support for the DV- will she check the box that states she sponsored someone already even if it is the same person? (Me)
March 15, 2018 at 19:10
That is obviously rare. You should decide yourself.
March 15, 2018 at 17:00
Hi Brit,
I have one question in the DS260 related to Education Information as I passed high school as well as the university so I’m holding bachelor degree. My answers:
DS260-Q: Number of Educational Institutions Attended:1
Then I completed the University (degree) information as I thought High school degree is already included/under university degree, but now I’m wondering that there’s no other question related or asking about the high school info. Is it Ok like that or shall I ask to open the form to adjust the answer into “2” then adding all info for both HS & UD?
Thanks in advance.
March 15, 2018 at 17:44
You should have replied 2 – if you are not yet current – I would recommend you update the DS260.
March 15, 2018 at 19:40
I will. No, it’s not current.
Thank you
March 15, 2018 at 17:31
Hi Brit,
How are the discussions going with Trump and his team on the future DV?Any hope for DV 2019 as we are not hearing anything yet.Are they still discussing the fate of the program?
March 15, 2018 at 17:42
No changes as yet – no change is good for DV2019.
March 15, 2018 at 17:47
Mr Brit no change is good for 2019 dv pls what do you mean
March 15, 2018 at 17:57
If there is no change to the law, then DV2019 will go ahead.
March 15, 2018 at 18:04
Thank you so much for your reply.. we waiting patiently.
March 15, 2018 at 17:32
My other question is that I filled my name in the Entry form (OCT-2016) as:
Family name: Holani
First name: Sara
Middle name: Shadi
So Applicant Name in the winning letter: Holani, Sara Shadi
Where in the DS260 it is:
Name provided: Holani, Sara Shadi (same) while in passport it is Sara Shadi Hasan Holani (with Grandfather’s name). Is it ok that I didnt put my grandfather name? Also if I’m unlocking the ds260 for my previous Q shall I adjust the name also (to be as passport with grandfather’s name) or to keep it as the winning letter?
Thanks again.
March 15, 2018 at 17:43
You need to follow procedures in your country. I don’t know those procedures.
March 15, 2018 at 19:45
Ok. I will keep the original 3 names as it is and will use 4 names (passport full name) as nickname/other used name. In this way I’m covering both for them for background check. Good idea?
March 15, 2018 at 20:13
Yes
March 16, 2018 at 10:04
Will do. Great. As you are.

Q2: is CN(AF205xx) is safe ?
Q3: the next VB for egypt can take less than 1500 ??

March 15, 2018 at 23:01
You have asked me this several times in the last three days alone. It’s frustrating that you keep ignoring my response.
Wait and see.
March 15, 2018 at 22:47
Hi Brit
Thanks for the tremendous support.
I received my 2NL today and interview is schedule for May 03. I didn’t see any further instructions about the medical exam appointment and fees.
1: How can I schedule an appointment to do the medical exam ?
2: Is it the embassy responsibility?
Thank you

March 16, 2018 at 05:00
Hi Simon!
Several days ago I realized that I did a mistake when I applied for dv lottery. I was born in Uzbekistan (both of my parents too) but when I turned 8, I moved to Kazakhstan and got Kazakhstan citizenship. Since I’ve been living in Kazakhstan for 15 years by mistake I put Kazakhstan as a country of chargeability.
Could you give me any answer how serious this mistake is and how possible to get refusal?
March 16, 2018 at 05:31
It is possible to be disqualified because although both countries are in the same region, Uzbekistan has a lower chance of selection. So – you took an advantage that you were not entitled to.
Some inexperienced COs might not realize this – so the choice is your whether to risk the interview or not.
March 16, 2018 at 05:38
Hi Brit;
I’m very worried because my case number was AF23XXX according to visa bulletin my case will be scheduled for may interview and yet I didn’t got my 2NL what shall I do sir ?
thanks
March 16, 2018 at 05:45
Use some patience.
March 16, 2018 at 07:00
Hello Brit!
I am afraid about something. In the 2NL my living adress is Yzberish but in fact the proper one is Yzberisht. I am afraid it will cause problems at my visa interview. What can you say?
March 16, 2018 at 14:32
No problem.
March 16, 2018 at 07:56

If you mean the short name of the empassy (consulate column) it is THT. If you want to find out the number of visa issued on the chart you could begin to tape Uzbekistan.

Hello, Brit
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m winner at EU26*** region.
1. Since I have filled DS-260, I have moved to a new job (company and position). Do I need to unlock and update my DS-260, with this new information?
2. I have read your post about I-134 form. Sorry for “maybe” dump question. If me and my husband have “Bank/other financial statements” in one bank account 2x more than your suggested amounts “$10,000 for each adult”. Do we need to have and bring to the interview, signed I-134 form by our sponsor which I indicated as a first place where we go and we want to receive our Green cards?
Thank you and Best wishes for all of you guys !!!

1. You can if you want.
2. You can decide what gives you the best chance.
March 16, 2018 at 15:30
2.I think we will go with both of them, bank account statements and I-134, it will be more guaranteed right? Just one more question do we need to choose for I-134 same sponsor we indicated in DS-260 for GC shipping address or can it be different like other people? Do principal applicant and accompany need 2 separate I-134 forms or just oen is enough? Sorry to bother you and thank you, Brit!

That is safest.
The I-134 can be a different person.
One I-134 covers the family.

Dear Brit,
I recently had my interview and go approved. Though I haven’t received my passport but when I checked the status it says ISSUED. Hopefully I will receive my passport soon along with my wife and 2 kids.
Your support is always appreciated and I will be in need of your guidance at present and in the future too.
Now once visa issued most of us have the same question that whether we can enter USA and leave immediately or no to fix our things back home or wherever we reside? My plan is to go out immediately (probably within a week) to give notice period to my current company which might take 2-4 months time and go back to USA again.
I read FAQ at your site and choose the option, After the interview, ((Timeline of First Entry and Absence from USA). Somehow I got the clue that after the visa is endorsed we can leave immediately. Now my question is:
1. Do we need to wait for the SSN or green card to arrive and than only we can leave or we can simply leave with that endorsed visa without waiting for SSN or green card?
2. Do I have to fill up any type of forms before leaving USA though I’m returning back within 2-4 months time?
Thank you once again for all your support. Without your guidance, I might have different outcomes today.
God Bless you and your entire family.

Hi Brit,
I’m Jordanian, I had my interview last week in Naples, Italy.. Everything was going very WEEL, I got every single document they asked me to bring to the interview and every police certificate from every country I had lived in( l got the original documents and the translations ) .. And I can speak three languages and I proved that to them too and they asked for another documents and I was lucky to have them that day with me. They took photocopies for all my documents.
I realized that they didn’t even look to my DS application from their questions maybe and the CO a little bit surprised because I lived and studied in three different countries! She said “it is crazy”
The CO told me that they will Put me in AP without any reason and they need more checks from Jordan.. I said I brought everything like criminal records and etc and all the documents are original. She said yes I know but “we will see the world how will go in the next days just be patient and wait” .
1. What that supposed to mean will see the world how will go in the next days!?
2.is it bad for me that I lived and studied in three different countries?
3.is there any explanation for putting me on AP without any obvious reasons ?
4. Updating my case status.. is that meaning anything?
March 16, 2018 at 13:44
1. I don’t know.
2. It can increase the need for background checks.
3. No – that is up to them.
4. No.

Hello,
I am the main applicant and today is one of the happiest day of my life as my husband, my two sons and myself finally successfully made it through!
Our interview took place only 2days ago in London and although the officer approved us immediately after, we preferred to keep it low until we could see it with our own eyes:) we just found out that our status has been updated to ”ISSUED”!
Simon, we will forever be grateful for your tremendous help and support as we would have never been to make it without your help.
To all winners still on the run, keep positive and I wish you all the very best of success.
To my Moroccan brothers and sisters – I am French, Moroccan roots- ”Allah iwafa9kom jami3an a khoti lmgharba”

Hello Simon, I’m the winner of the 2018 lottery, I did the interview at the consulate on March 7th. Unfortunately I did not graduate and I presented the documents related to the work requirement. I have given the employer a certificate from the employer that states how long I have worked for my company, the sector in which I work, the qualification and a report that explains my duties. At the interview the consular officer asked me for further documents, pay packet and proof of the fees paid in the last 5 years and a report that explains my career path to specialization. I sent the documents by e-mail and they asked me for a list of the security update courses, which were also sent on Tuesday afternoons. Today I have not received an answer. My status in the CEAC until yesterday was in “administrative process” but yesterday afternoon and returned “ready”. Can you tell me what it means? What do you think about my case?

Be patient.

Hi Brit,
My interview will be in May. I need to prepare a Police Record in the country where I’ve been lived since last September, but I applied the Police Record in February (I’ve been lived in that country for five months on that time.) Is there any problems if I bring the police record which I applied in February to my interview in May?
March 16, 2018 at 15:44
no problem.
March 16, 2018 at 16:06
Thank you, Brit!
If I want to ask about my police record, who should I ask, KCC or embassy?
March 16, 2018 at 16:23
You just asked me – and I answered.
