Dear Simon,
I planned to move to the US in October. I will have all the things done by this date, new fiscal year, and some other reasons. However, I started the job search early and got a couple of on-site interviews. Most IT companies in the US seem to have on-sites as a last step, so I cannot avoid it if I want to have a job on arrival. However, it will execute all the immigration processes, so I have couple of questions about it.
1. I will come just for a day. However, SSS 90-day countdown seems to start, right? sss.gov seems to be unavailable outside the US, and I cannot apply via post as on the first day as I will not have an SSN assigned yet. What do I do in this case? Should I just call them in 1-2 weeks after that and explain the situation?
2. Taxes. As I will come within 2019 fiscal year, seems like I will have to file my foreign income then by the 15th of April 2020, right? Are there any downsides, e.g., double taxation? Will I need to carry all the payslips with me to the US to file the tax report in 2020?
3. Driver’s license. As far as I know, California wants you to apply for a license exchange (if you have an international one) within 10 days after you become a resident. However, the definition of resident on CA DMV website is:
Prima facie evidence of residency for driver’s licensing purposes includes, but is not limited to, the following:
(A) Address where registered to vote.
(B) Payment of resident tuition at a public institution of higher education.
(C) Filing a homeowner’s property tax exemption.
(D) Other acts, occurrences, or events that indicate presence in the state is more than temporary or transient.
So, as far as I understand, even though I will become an LPR, it’s not about my case, as this visit will be just a temporary one, right?
4. Are there any other things I need to take care of after the first entry and before the arrival for good?
Thank you in advance, and have a great day!
Best regards,
Max
July 5, 2019 at 17:33
1. Use your own judgement.
2. Yes you will file in April 2020. Keep all your records of income earned outside the USA.
3. Correct.
4. Every person has different situation…
July 5, 2019 at 17:52
Dear Simon,
Thank you very much for your response.
1. Yeah, I will just call them. Or send the form from abroad.
2. Good, thank you.
3. Great!
4. I mean, in general. If I will just come for a day, living in a hotel, going to an interview, not doing anything as an LPR, is there anything else I must do in the next 3-4 months besides the SSS, or everything else can be done when I move?
Thank you in advance.
Best,
Max
July 6, 2019 at 03:45
4. nothing I can think of…
July 6, 2019 at 15:16
Dear Simon,
Perfect, thank you very much for your help! Have a great weekend!
Best,
Max

Hi Brit, I’m DV2020 winner and case number is 183xx from Asia. Here are the questions.
1) Is there any chance to call for the interview?
2) what was the highest case number that you heard callig for the interview previous years?
3) what is the quota for Asia region in previous years?
July 5, 2019 at 17:36
1. Maybe.
2. That’s irrelevant. Every year is different.
3. It’s about 8000
July 5, 2019 at 10:54
Hi Simon,
As my name is too long, it was not fully printed in the passport and unfortunately I had to further shorten it in DS-260(was not enough space), anyway my birth certificate has the full name. Can I submit an affidavit along with the supporting document? Appreciate your advise on this.
July 5, 2019 at 17:37
An affidavit may be useful.
July 5, 2019 at 12:08
Hi Birit
My husband he won the Dv lottery and he applied for me as one family member but actually I’m living in us as I applied for asylum, people keep telling him that once he included me in his Entery application that it will affect his visa since I’m in the US,and the told him that he have to said I don’t have relation with her (me)now,is that will help,am really confused
And you advise me to do CO with him or AOS?
July 5, 2019 at 17:40
He needs to be 100% honest about the marriage and everything else. You need to make a decision for yourself how to process.
July 5, 2019 at 18:02
Ok.i have another questions:
1_ status here it will affect his Visa approval?since am here as a pending asylee.
2_if I decided to join him in the interview,do I have to cancel my asylum application?
3_which option is better for him to get approval (joint him in the interview ) or( he do it alone)
July 6, 2019 at 03:46
1. No
2. Ask your lawyer.
3. I don’t know anything about his chance of approval.
July 5, 2019 at 12:36
Hi brit ! Did the new procedure of submiting dicuments prior to interview impact the low visa issuance this year ,and does it have impact on high case numbers bad or good?
July 5, 2019 at 21:10
Yes. In 2019 it radically changed the process and gave a chance to the high numbers.
In 2020 the process will be better understood, and hopefully better implemented. If that is the case, then the selectee to issued rate will go back to nearer what it was before the new procedure, and that could leave high DV2020 cases out of luck.
July 5, 2019 at 23:02
the low issuance was because of no response from applicants or the refusal rate grew ,thanks brit
July 6, 2019 at 03:56
Again – because of the new procedure.
July 6, 2019 at 08:54
if thats the case , I think the low issuance will continue also in 2020 ,because many people cant submit their documents prior to the interview ,or cant get a police certificate or their certificate is not clear.
July 6, 2019 at 11:34
Well we will see.
July 7, 2019 at 02:07
Hello brit !!!
I am selectee of 2020 having low case nu 302*.
I want to change the sponsor that I made on ds260.
Do I need to unlock ds260?
Everyone I asked replied that I have to reopen ds260 after 2Nl .
is it true ?
What is the best option brit ?
Best regards
July 7, 2019 at 02:48
Apparantly you know a lot of idiots. Once you get the 2nl you will not be able to unlock. So change it asap.
July 5, 2019 at 13:21
Hi brit
My freind’s wife won the dv lottery2020 , his wife will get a baby after 2 months and he is still afraid now about ds260! Should he wait for the baby birth or just fill it now ?
July 5, 2019 at 21:42
The answer depends on the case number we are talking about (with year and region).
July 6, 2019 at 10:49
His case number is AF1800 .. good one just want to know what do now !
July 6, 2019 at 11:47
If that were my case I would submit the DS260 after the birth – much easier and there is plenty of time before the end of DV2020.
July 5, 2019 at 13:35

July 5, 2019 at 21:43
I don’t understand the question.
July 5, 2019 at 13:53
Hello
I will be having the interview in two weeks time and I was reviewing my DS-260, and then OH-MY! I have forgotten to list the “high school” diploma, but I have listed my University Diploma. Since small things worry me a lot, this thing has been worrying me for days now, because it is not possible to unlock it, even though I have read from online informations that it is okay to correct it at the interview, by letting the CO know about it.
What do you think about this situation? I have the original diploma of my high school, with the grades and everything! Will it cause a problem?
I have messaged the embassy where I will be having the interview, but until now, they didn’t respond back, and I wanted to have your opinion also about my case.
All the best!!!
July 5, 2019 at 21:44
No point in worrying about this now. Just take all the proof to the interview.
July 5, 2019 at 15:10

July 5, 2019 at 15:26
Dear Simon,
I am DV2019 winner; I have submitted my DS260 back in the middle of October 2018 and then after in December decided not to proceed forward…I wrote the US embassy in my country about my decision and they advised to inform KCC; on what they replied that anyway my case will not be processed until I submit my documents . Meanwhile, I rethought my decision and now want to proceed forward in this very end if possible…Do you think that my case will be taken in consideration for September interview, if I submit my documents for processing by 17th of July the latest? Please advise.
Thank you
Lucky DM
July 5, 2019 at 21:48
Wow – that would be a gamble. I cannot say for sure it would be OK or not.
July 5, 2019 at 16:59
hi Mr brit I wined dv but infortunately I am hearing-impered (deaf) can I applit for the interview, if yes, the interview will be written? THANKS YOU FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS
July 5, 2019 at 21:54
Being deaf is not a reason for refusal.
July 5, 2019 at 17:03
Hello simon.
My girlfriend has Won DV2020. Can she include me during the submission of ds260. We were organizing for marriage this year..I would like to ask also if the ds160 can interfere with this ds260 because the wife am marrying to she is not the one I had given out the name during interview but we were not married.
July 5, 2019 at 21:56
You can be added to the case if you have a genuine and legal marriage.
The embassy will be able to access the previously filed applications.
July 6, 2019 at 07:59
Thank you soo much Simon and God bless you.
July 5, 2019 at 17:22

July 5, 2019 at 19:11
Hi Brit,
My case number is 2020AF59xxxx…I submitted my Ds-260 on 27th May. Waiting on the document scanning request mail. Any chance it will come before August? 2. Is my case number too high?
July 6, 2019 at 03:49
You have too many X’s after your number, but if you mean 2020AF59XXX then there is NO chance you will be asked for documents very soon and your interview won’t be for a year, if at all.
July 5, 2019 at 19:36
A friend of mine won the lottery. She was married and separated before the entry and applied as a widow. Later she got her divorce certificate too. Her interview is on 25th July. Now she is going to marry again and she had asked the embassy if she can include her new husband too. The embassy had advised her, as she told me, to email KCC asap and attach his infos. Do you think this is going to be OK?
July 6, 2019 at 03:51
No. If you are being accurate in what you are saying she is about to waste her money.
She lied that she was a widow – and will not be able to prove that.
She should have included her previous husband and the instructions are completely clear about that, so there was no reason for her to lie.
She will be disqualified.

hello Brit after reading Houssine comment, I realised I made the same mistake when filling educational institution. I wrote but 1 and that is my university institution. I never mentioned my secondary institution. I have already received the ready for scheduling message and if all goes on well I might be scheduled for September.
1. Please what do you advice me to do?
2. Can it cause denial or any problems at interview?
Thanks. 2019AF46xxx
July 6, 2019 at 03:54
Take all the documents to the interview. You cannot unlock now.
July 6, 2019 at 00:19
Hey brit again im sorry for all these questions my friend but im bit confused. Im gonna renew my passport in august then i will try to reopen my ds260 form and add the information of the new passport. Im okay with this it seems simple. but the question that keeps confusing me is what should i write in ghe number of educational instituitons attended? i reaally couldnt get this.
July 6, 2019 at 03:57
How many different schools, colleges or universities did you attend from about age 12. THat is the answer, then you list them. THAT SIMPLE!
July 6, 2019 at 13:14
Even though i can reopen my ds form since i have not ben scheduled yet because im in dv2020. But i think the best solution is to take all the educational documents as well as the last and the new passport with me to the interview and explain all to them. Is that possible ? And cause no problem ? I really appreciate your efforts man.
July 6, 2019 at 13:51
Why would you do that???
Correct it.
July 7, 2019 at 00:10
So when i recieve my new passport in august i will try to correct the mistake and do all the necessary things. But what if they contact me before i do the correction. It would be a problem doesn’t ?
July 7, 2019 at 00:15
What is your case number?

You have asked versions of this same question multiple times under various user names. I am fed up answering you over and over again. Pick one of the many answers I have given you. DO NOT ask me again.
The last answer is here.

July 6, 2019 at 12:49
You will list your current occupation as student at that college.
July 6, 2019 at 15:20
I was in my home country Sudan when I applied.
Would it be a problem if I get a residency or work visa in UAE after submitting my DS-260 form?
July 6, 2019 at 16:51
Hi BritSimon,
Thanks so much for the work you put in to help us winners of dv lottery.
My CN is 2019AS11xxx. I’ve been scheduled for interview 5 August 19. When I last checked, 1 of my derivatives was not included in the interview even though I have submitted all her documents. She turned 21 in Mar 19. Based on your information for ageing out, I calculated the pending period & she will be 20 years 10 months.
My questions:
1. How do I get this information to KCC & get her to the interview? Is there a form to fill? Is it too late?
2. How do I fill up a Sought to Acquire Requirement in the DS-260? Is this to be done before the interview or after I get the visa ?
Sought to Acquire Requirement
In order to benefit from CSPA as a family preference (including VAWA), employment-based preference, or DV applicant, you must seek to acquire lawful permanent resident status within 1 year of a visa becoming available to you. This is referred to as the “sought to acquire” requirement. You may satisfy this requirement by:
* Properly filing a Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status; or
* Submitting a completed Part 1 of Form DS-260, Immigrant Visa Electronic Application; or
* Having a Form I-824, Application for Action on an Approved Application or Petition properly filed on your behalf.
If you fail to satisfy the sought to acquire requirement, USCIS may use its discretion to excuse you from this requirement if you can establish that your failure to do so was the result of extraordinary circumstances.
Any advice is appreciated! Thanks for your help!
July 6, 2019 at 17:40
1. Contact the embassy and explain that you are bringing your 21 year old daughter who is protected under CSPA. Print out the info I gave for the interview.
2. You completed a DS260 for her – right? So that’s it.
July 6, 2019 at 17:34
No

July 7, 2019 at 00:14
Hi BritSimon,
My CN is 2020AS00023XXX. I submitted the DS260 in first week of June. Still didn’t get any email on requesting to email the documents. (by the time I submitted the DS260 I wasn’t aware about your blog.) Any Idea when you think they will request to submit the documents? and will interview take long time to schedule?
Thank you
Regards,
SV
July 7, 2019 at 01:37
You will wait almost a year before you hear anything. Your number is quite high, so for now, just be patient.
July 7, 2019 at 00:37
Good night I am 2019 I found out late I filled the day 27/06 subsequent send the documentation on Thursday I sent an email requesting the eata of my ds and reapondió quw had been received and awaiting approval that you recommend me to make friend
July 7, 2019 at 01:38
You now have to wait.
July 7, 2019 at 04:05
And without unlocking is it better to inform at the interview.
I see your comment that simply present I 134 at the interview.
But you tell me to unlock.
Please what is better ?
You are not clearly told
July 7, 2019 at 14:41
If you need to unlock, you have to do that before the 2NL.
If you are ONLY talking about the I-134, then you do not need to unlock. You need to decide whether you need to make a change or not.
Use some common sense please.
July 7, 2019 at 07:52
hi brit ! how long before 2Nl should tell the person in US to send affidavit ,or how long before interview does it take long to get it in USA ,does the affidavit expire thanks.
July 7, 2019 at 14:43
The affidavit does not expire, but common sense says it should be recent at the interview.
July 7, 2019 at 12:56
Hello Brit,
Please can u help me to Know the document that my sponsor need to send to me to enable me file the DS260
July 7, 2019 at 14:46
To file the DS260 you do not need anything from the sponsor. Later (at interview) you will need somethings – use the search feature for I-134.
July 7, 2019 at 14:04
Hi Brit Simon,
Thanks for the great blog!
We have, what I hope is, a quick question.
We live in Copenhagen Denmark and were allocated Stockholm as our place for interview. When I started filling in the form it gave me the option to change this to another location in which case I picked Copenhagen. My husband has subsequently read that all immigrant visa interviews are carried out in the US embassy in Stockholm for our region, for my husband and our child we have kept it as Stockholm, however I can now not change my interview location. The form is not yet submitted and we are DV-2020 selectee .
1. What would you recommend?
July 7, 2019 at 14:47
No action needed. They will choose, regardless of what you picked.
July 7, 2019 at 14:26
HI,
CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT SHOULD I WRITE IN VACCINATION QUESTION (DS-260) ACCORDANCE OF U.S LAW AS I DONT HAVE ANY DOCUMENTS TO SHOW MY VACCINATION RECORD.
IF I ANSWER “NO” THEY ARE ASKING THE EXPLANATION,
THNAKS
July 7, 2019 at 14:48
That you will have the vaccinations as needed during the medical.
July 7, 2019 at 14:28
Hi brit. My interview is in days time and I had errors in my ds 260 on year of birth and I never unlocked it to change previously. But all my documents have the correct information.
Do you think it will bring problems? Do I need a affidavit to explain my errors at the interview??
July 7, 2019 at 14:49
My recommendation would have been to correct the DS260. I don’t know why you did not do that. There is nothing you can do now – hopefully the CO wil not be concerned.
July 7, 2019 at 14:58
hi brit .
i submitted ds260 in june 2 2018 , and i sent the docouments in 2 july 2019 , am i late my case is 2019EU29XXX
July 7, 2019 at 15:06
You already know you are late. Will you get scheduled? I don’t know.
July 7, 2019 at 16:25
Hello,

Hi Brit,
I have some questions regarding completing the DS-260 form.
1. My surname on my passport is blank (no surname is mentioned), i.e., I only have ‘Given name’ mentioned on my passport. Please advise what should I write in the surname and given name in the personal information section of the DS-260.
2. In the present work/education/training section of the DS-260 there is a question “Does this job require at least 2 years of training or experience?” I applied for the DV based on education; and not work experience. I have selected ‘Education’ as my primary occupation, so should I answer the question with Yes or No?
3. I have heard that selecting a profession in the DS-260 which requires obtaining professional license in the USA can be a reason for the rejection during the interview. Is that true?

1. Write your full legal name (if it fits).
2. Education is not a job. Say No.
3. No. That’s idiotic.

Hi Brit Simon,
My husband received a set of questions including the following: ‘have you belonged to, contributed to, or worked for any professional, social, or charitable organisation’ – he was a member of a student organisation whilst at university some 15 years ago.
1. Should he include this there? or is this not what they are looking for?
Thanks for your help! 🙂

Hi Simon.
Thank you for the wonderful work you are doing. Please need your help.
1-My case number is 2020AF00024XXX and I am from Cameroon. Is my case number to high?
2-When I was applying, I made spelling error for my children name but when I was filling the D-260, I gave the right spelling and order of name as it is on their birth certicates. Will this affect my chances?
3-My wife currently pregnant and may deliver in February next year(2020). If my family is given a visa, what will be the faith of this new family member who was not included during entry and submission of D-260?
4- Including the expected new member in 3 above my case number will have 4 person (me, my wife and 3 kids) needing visa. Is it possible that we will be given visa?
Thank you very much and waiting for your advice.

1. No
2. No
3. Faith? I think you may mean fate? That baby can be added once born – no problem. Read the FAQ.
4. Yes – if you meet the requirements and follow the process correctly.

Hi Brit,
I hope you are doing well.
I have some questions regarding completing the DS-260 form.
1. My surname on my passport is blank (no surname is mentioned), i.e., I only have ‘Given name’ mentioned on my passport. Please note that this statement is mentioned on the DS-260 form “Enter all surnames as listed in your passport or travel documentation. If only one name is listed, enter that as your surname.”. Please advise what should I write in the surname and given name in the personal information section of the DS-260 knowing that in my DV application my surname is ‘NFN’ (No Family Name).
2. In the present work/education/training section of the DS-260 there is a question “Does this job require at least 2 years of training or experience?” I applied for the DV based on education; and not work experience. I have selected ‘Education’ as my primary occupation, so should I answer the question with Yes or No?
3. I have heard that selecting a profession in the DS-260 which requires obtaining professional license to practice in the USA can be a reason for the rejection during the interview. Is that true?
4. My case number is 2020AS00024XXX. How long should I hold before submitting the DS-260?
