Hello BritSimon,
While filling initial application for dv2019, I mentioned “some doctoral level courses” as my education. One year ago, I dropped my PhD program being a second-year student. Then, one year ago, I collected two documents from the university:
1. Official paper mentioning a time-period within which I was a PhD student .
2. Official paper mentioning courses I passed as a Phd Student.
There are two questions that I would like to hear your opinion about.
1. Are the documents I listed above enough for demonstrating/proving that I correctly chose “some doctoral level courses” as my education in the initial application or is there any other document must be collected for this purpose?
2. Will these documents still valid by the time of my interview scheduled on August, 8? Personally, I have not found any rules on this matter.
Additionally, I am intending to bring at the interview my high school diploma/transcript, bachelor’s and master’s diplomas/transcripts as evidence.
July 8, 2019 at 21:02
1. Your original answer does not matter at all.
2. Again – unimportant.
July 8, 2019 at 07:23
Hello everybody:) who knows ? how long aprx. will it take to check the documents at the first US entry – we’ll fly with Turkish through SF or LA with connection already in Seattle.
July 8, 2019 at 21:03
Allow 3 to 4 hours to be safe before your connection.

July 8, 2019 at 10:12
Hi Bert
I’m from Africa and dv 2019 winner
I had my interview on Jun 18 and they said we have worry on the marriage. and they hold only original marriage and both birth certificate. And the case display AP, last update was July 1st.
The problem they said it’s under age marriage. The age of my wife was at the end of 16 at the date of marriage. But now she is around 18 and half.
What di you think is they garrant our visa and how long the process takes. We are worried about no. Visas limit and the time frame the dv is not valid after septembr 30.
July 8, 2019 at 23:31
I have no way to predict the outcome or whether they will make a decision before September 30.
July 8, 2019 at 10:54
Hi Simon,
I’m a DV2020 selectee from asia (AS15xxx) and i have submitted my DS260 application in May. but after i read your articles i understand made a few mistakes when submitting. those are:
01. Job position should be senior software engineer not software engineer.
02. Missed to add previous occupations i have worked (before 5 years)
03. I have added present work/education/training information’s for qualifying from my job but i have a bachelor of engineering degree from a UK university. (should i change to qualifying from education?)
So by considering these problems should i request to unlock my DS260 for add those changes? if i unlock, will it be affect when case processing?
July 8, 2019 at 23:34
You can unlock and change without any problem.
July 8, 2019 at 11:23

July 8, 2019 at 17:26
Hi Simon,
I hope to qualifying through work experience. currently i’m working as a senior software engineer in a reputed company in my country and completed my 1 year internship in a different company, what does mean “does this job require 2 years of training or experience”? how is it important? (i don’t get it by reading your Education or Work experience – qualifying for the DV lottery article)
Thanks a lot for this brilliant community service.
July 9, 2019 at 00:00
Read the article again and decide whether your job matches the O*Net description for jobs at the correct level.
July 9, 2019 at 02:10
Again Brit, what does mean “does this job require 2 years of training or experience”? i don’t get it.
July 9, 2019 at 02:11
Please note my job is matched with required SVP range and Job Zone
July 9, 2019 at 22:55
It means exactly what is says, but I already told you to focus o the O*net system.
July 8, 2019 at 17:34
Hello Sir Brits…
Kindly permit me share this experience… But before then I must admit your blog is dope..
From day one of the DV Journey… I initially had not a travelling passport left alone for my wife and 2 kids. You advised I could still go ahead to complete the DS260 using the other National ID option…I did while working on the passports which took close to 4 months for all all four to be ready. We had the forms submitted right on time sometime in December.
Had passports in March…the sent scanned documents. 2NL received on 18th April…while wondering how to raise fund for all four’s medicals and visas, and thinking of doing for just one, you pushed me hard with an encouraging word, that it would be the greatest deservice to my family… I pressed on and we were able to raise some funds to cater for all…
Had interview on June 6 in Accra and approved…CEAC Status showed AP for almost a week…then issued on June 18
Then today July 8, all documents received.
Brit…keep on man, don’t let any idiot kill your fire.
July 9, 2019 at 00:15
Thanks for the kind words – and well done for finding a way to make it possible for you to go as a family. If needed you can leave asap ahead of the family and find a job in the USA – and that would help with the expenses for the rest of the family to move over.
July 8, 2019 at 19:52
Brit,
As per the CEAC data analysis, AP cases keeps increasing month by month, meaning that either they are not being resolved or they are being resolved at a very slow pace. my question is:
are the consulates intending to resolve pending AP cases towards September 2019 or how has it worked out in the previous years?
July 9, 2019 at 00:17
The numbers are increasing because of the volume of cases being interviewed. This is normal. Embassies push to resolve cases by the deadline, but there are inevitably cases that don’t clear in time.
July 9, 2019 at 05:12
Brit,
When can we see the selectee count for DV2020?
Where can we see it? The official travel state website only has data up to DV2018
July 9, 2019 at 23:00
It will be published in the VB – probably within a few days.
July 9, 2019 at 05:34
Hi, i know i have asked this question before but didn’t get clear ans, can you please help me with this again. My daughter was born in Dubai, we left dubai 10 years ago, do i need to submit PCC from dubai during interview, as well.
Been looking for information on this but didn’t get clear idea.
Please help.
July 9, 2019 at 23:03
You had a perfectly clear answer – you are asking again because you did not do as I told you. You should follow my instruction.

July 10, 2019 at 01:36
That’s what am trying to tell you, i could find “instructions “page. Been looking for it ever since u asked me to, really getting confused, so much that I thought I should just apply for it, but i cannt apply it from my home country.
July 10, 2019 at 03:20
THe instructions link is given to you in the first letter. And covered in my FAQ and how to prepare for the interview video and on and on. Sorry – but I am not going to help you be lazy. It is important you take responsibility for your own case.
July 10, 2019 at 04:15
Well thank you, it is surely not about being lazy, its all about being confused and not able to understand.

HI Brit,
Case number is 2020AF35XXX. Is it considered to be too high. ? Thanks
July 9, 2019 at 23:05
No
July 9, 2019 at 13:11
Dear Simon,
I wanted to arrange an interview appointment at US embassy in Ethiopia and I’m one of the selectee’s of DV Lottery winner of the 2019.
I was appointed on June 18,2019 in which the interviewer asked me weather I’m good at English and i answered not perfect, and then he told me you are not going & doesn’t give me what his stand was in my interview and my case.
This is to ask you “how to reschedule an interview ” to get done with my case
Regards
July 9, 2019 at 23:13
Just contact the embassy. I have no particular trick to assure an interview. I also told you that there must have been more to the denial than you are saying.
July 9, 2019 at 13:11
Dear Mr Simon,
My interview was on the 2nd of july, and I got approved. My question is my CEAC case status is still ready with updates every 2 or 3 days, is this normal?
July 9, 2019 at 23:13
Yes. Patience.
July 9, 2019 at 14:23
Dear Simon,
I am a DV-2020 selectee with case number 2020EU48XXX. From reading your blogs and looking at data from previous years this seems to be a very high case number. I estimate that my interview is unlikely to come up before summer 2020 but I am worried that the case number is so high I might not be invited for an interview. What are your thoughts on this?
Also I wanted to ask when KCC will sent the email to request document upload. Is this several weeks before the 2NL is sent or can I expect this sooner?
Thank you for your dedication in keeping this website and answering everyone’s questions!
Eveline
July 9, 2019 at 23:16
It is too soon to know. There are NOT 47999 cases in front of you – it is less, but we don’t know how many yet – so wait.
Documents will be requested later – months from now.
July 9, 2019 at 16:26
Hi Simon
Please in your valuable advices again, as stated earlier my case number is AS 24XX.
I am not sure yet if the case is considered low case number or not, does it look low? however i have not submitted my DS yet.
i am planing to complete filling it soon but i got a business trip plan to USA on September 2019 so do you think it is better to wait in till the visit is done then once back i add this trip details to the DS260 USA visit history since this is not my first time visiting USA.
Last question: Regarding the education requirement, i am not sure if they will accept my diploma equivalence , so is it oaky that i get prepared for both (Education and work experience) either hopefully they accept me as per my education or work experience,
Thanks a-lot
July 9, 2019 at 23:21
Your number is OK. Your plan is OK.
Prepare work experience AND education documents.
July 9, 2019 at 18:23
friend I am 2019 I already have the ds-260 and approved documents until the time of registration we made an error the date of birth I realized when I was going to fill ñas ds-260 is that case that should be done the date placed is 11/11 / 1983 and it had to be 02/11/1983
July 9, 2019 at 23:40
As long as it is correct in the DS260 it would not normally be a problem.
July 9, 2019 at 18:42
Hi Brit,
I sent the ds-260 in 21 MAY 2019 but haven’t received the “send the documents” email. I sent the documents anyways.
My question is, I know i’m late but a friend of mine sent the ds-260 in the exact same date from the same country but he got the email for the documents and I haven’t. Should I expect 2NL in September?
By the way my form is too long, I have too many past addresses, does it affect its processing speed?
2019EU00029xxx
Thanks.
July 10, 2019 at 00:06
You should ask KCC if they are satisfied with your documents – do that asap.
July 10, 2019 at 18:04
I already emailed them twice and called them, they told me “Your documents are received and ds-260 is still processing, you should wait.” It’s a little bit vague, I can’t tell if they’re satisfied or not. Is there anything I can do?
Sub question: I think there is only 5 days left to process the ds-260 because they will start sending 2NL’s around 15 this month. Is it true or will they also process ds-260’s after 15 July?
I really appreciate your help, thanks.
July 10, 2019 at 22:52
You should really persist. Interviews for September would normally be based on cases ready for scheduling at the end of June. We are ALREADY in a risky time – I cannot be sure where the cutoff will fall, but next month they start arranging DV2020 interviews.
July 9, 2019 at 18:54
Hello Mr Simon .thank you for your great job.
I have questions which are:
1:I have an issue in my passport that the passport authority has stamped an extra verification page indicating my father name also, that does not match with my school and university diplomas .will it be a problem for me? if yes I have to get a new passport with new number which takes about a month and should have to unlock again does ihis and unlocks will delay my further case process?.my case No is 2020 AS79xx.
2: I will unlock my ds 260 form again for passport update do multiple unlocks affect my case ?
3: I have indicated my previous workexperiences with their job descriptions .but my friend told me that if you give them information and details about your work it will delay your case becaue they will check all those things is it right?.
4:I am a nurse and need a liscence to work according to my profession so what should I write as an answer to what do you want to do n usa? . someone says write business but someone say do not do that becauae they will ask you about type of business or bank account for business .I am totally confused .
thank you sir again .
July 10, 2019 at 00:16
1. I don’t know if that would be a problem or not.
2. No
3. Your friend is an idiot.
4. Just tell the truth!
July 9, 2019 at 23:06
Dear Simon
My interview date is August 4 2019 and I send email to Embassy and send me the following but the link is not Opening
What I have to do to my status online for your help Please!
Please reply using this email chain as opposed to creating a new email so we have a complete record of all information pertinent to your case. You may check the status of your case online by visiting http://redirect.state.sbu/?url=https://ceac.state.gov
July 10, 2019 at 00:42
Why do you need to check your case status? You know the status – you are scheduled for interview. Save you energy for things that need it…
July 10, 2019 at 23:44
Thanks for your kind support
No need to update any thing in Embassy side?
only I will attend on interview day ?
Best regards

Hi brit again, i sent my ds260 form in may and havent recieved neither the email for documents nor for arranging my interview. My case number starts with 11. So what should i ? Should i send the documents to them ? or just wait for their email ?
July 10, 2019 at 01:56
Hi Simon,
I have two questions related to DS260 submission,
01. do we need to include previous part time jobs?
02. do we need to include self employed (few of peoples form a software firm and currently not active) jobs?
July 10, 2019 at 03:18
1. No
2. Use your own judgement based on whether you actually made a living or not.
July 10, 2019 at 06:40
Greetings Mr Simon.
my case No is 2020AS877xx and I have to unlock my ds260 form around september 25 2019 is it a bad attempt making my case delayed or No?.
July 10, 2019 at 06:45
sorry I did a mistake in my case No . my case No is 2020AS77xx. thanks
July 10, 2019 at 16:17
Unlocking is no problem.
July 10, 2019 at 06:58
Hi Simon!
Did you have to apostille (legalise) any of your documents?
I have a British divorce certificate, will have ACRO police certificate and name change deeds. DO you think these documents require legalisation?
Or US recognises UK documents without appostille?
Thank you!
Anna
July 10, 2019 at 16:17
Nope. Nothing.
July 10, 2019 at 07:03
Hello BritSimon, (2019AF00024xx)
My husband is principal. Something came up and I need advise. We are a Ugandan family of 5 and recently found out that our government communicated to embassies (not public) that valid birth certificates are those from the National Identity Registration Authority (a new 2015 agency). For the Feb softcopy submissions, 3 birth certificates are the old format (registered with local government).Should we surrender the old certificates and get the new format?
NB:Our Jun interview was pushed to Sept due to medical hold.
July 10, 2019 at 16:19
This is something you will need to decide for yourself as I have no idea about the Ugandan communication or local standards.
July 10, 2019 at 07:35

Hi brit,
I had a question I quality on the bases of job for DVLOTTERY I have already had my interview they put me on AP due to problems with my education…I failed one unit and I rhink that’s causing problems..so I wanted to know if I can submit my work experience..I check and my job falls between (7.0 to 8.0) so is there some way I could submit my work experience too??? And not get delayed….
July 10, 2019 at 18:11
You can try, but really the chance you had to present information such as work experience was at the interview.
July 10, 2019 at 10:21
Hi brit
My case number is 2020 As 24xxx
Is there is any hope or the case number is too high to get interview ?
July 10, 2019 at 18:25

July 10, 2019 at 18:30
How long should i wait to fill ds260 form ? Or should i dont even fill it because of high number ?
July 10, 2019 at 22:47
We will know more in a few weeks.
July 10, 2019 at 10:29
Hi Brit,
Thanks so much for your time and patient.
I am a DV2019 winner with a family of six. We were scheduled for June 27th interview at the end of April and all members of my family were Approved and we got all Visas yesterday. I have a question for you in order to have clarity on my next decision. question 1. I am the principal applicant and as sure my family can’t enter USA before me but I have something doing here that can’t permit me to reside in the USA for the next six to 9th months, So can I carry my family and come back immediately without waiting for the green card arrival? If yes, how can I go about it.
As for the interview experience , I want to clearly state that no need to stress yourself out as the questions are familiar once you prepare well and all about your case is true. Before the consular truth telling is important.
Finally as i await your answer to my question….let me take this time to wish those who are scheduled for interview already, those who are on AP and those who are waiting to be scheduled well in you processing
July 10, 2019 at 18:31
You can leave immediately if you want. Read the FAQ entry about that for a full explanation.
July 10, 2019 at 19:13
Thanks so much
July 10, 2019 at 10:49
Dear brit
today i (principal applicant)give interview with 2 kids only ,my wife can’t give interview due to medical report for additional test of TB, it seems scars in chest xray , at interview Co said every thing is ok but i can’t approve visa before interview of my wife. my wife ‘s inteview appointment as estimate at last of august 2019 after medical clear ,my question if i have chances? and if my wife can’t pass medical we (me and 2 kids) also denied visa? co return our passport said that sent all passport on my wife’s interview?
July 10, 2019 at 21:30
Her denial (if that happened) should not cause your denial.
July 11, 2019 at 10:21
thanks for reply dear brit , if she denied in medical is she is being interviwed or not. if not then how can i send my passport? they return our passsport or the embassy call me? is derivative denial causes principal applicant ? as i check ceac data my case is in AP.
July 12, 2019 at 05:39
Read my answer again!
July 10, 2019 at 10:50
HI Brit,
Case number is 2020AF52XXX. Is it considered to be too high. ? Thanks
July 10, 2019 at 21:29
It is too soon to know.
July 10, 2019 at 11:01
Hi simon,
Thank you for all
Im from Cameroon, DV 2019 selected and my interview is scheduled for August.
There is a problem with my case so please give me your advice.
“before completed my DS-260, i inform kcc that on my fisrt entry i said i was married because with my boyfriend cause we were plan it, but unfortunately we broke up before the result! so my current marital status is single.
The KCC tell me to completed the ds with correct information and that they will add it on my files. My DS-260 where completed with current marital status who is single.
But when received my second letter at the end of june, i always see the name of my ex boyfriend like beneficiary.
I wanted to know how can i manage this please!
Thank you for your answer
July 10, 2019 at 21:33
There is risk for your case. You either lied about being married when you entered the lottery (which can cause disqualification), or you are lying now. All you can do is tell the truth and hope they don’t disqualify you.
July 10, 2019 at 11:09
HI Brit,
My Case number is 2020AF52XXX. Is it considered to be too high. ? Thanks
July 10, 2019 at 21:34
Yes it is high, but it is too soon to know if you will get an interview. I suggest you wait for a few months at least, until we know more.
July 10, 2019 at 14:49
Hi brit thank you for your help i have booked my trip from morocco to usa LAX by air canada do i have a permission for 2 hours transit in montreal or no?
July 10, 2019 at 21:38
Check with the airline!
July 10, 2019 at 17:04
Hi there, I know this is not related to the DV visa lottery, so sorry in advance if this is not appropriate to ask.
My question is, is there any legal way you know of to extend the J1 visa? Like, is the person who comes here through work and travel program be able to extend their visa through going to school, or any other known way?
Thanks for your time.
July 10, 2019 at 22:52
I don’t know.
July 11, 2019 at 14:51
If you’re a Dutch person with visa questions, you may want to try the tijdelijke emigration section of the allesamerika forum.
July 10, 2019 at 18:54
I look at so many posts here and the questions within them, and I think, …..”oh my god ….you’ve won?, but you are not very bright and deserving”
I’ve already made a ‘call’ and a ‘judgement’
On that note …don’t you worry about the “quality” of entrants winning going on to being successful and entering the US (of course its a random lottery and I get that) ….(but…..i.e. their posts and their questions sometimes tells you everything you need to know)
Don’t you think, oh my god, how are you going to improve a country like the U.S. and you really shouldn’t be allowed in?
Don’t you lose the will to live and ask yourself, why am I doing this again?
How am I helping people that I don’t think ought to come?

Wow. That is a pretty awful attitude to take. Let me make some points.
1. Many of these people are dealing with language problems. How would you get on with dealing with a legal process in Swaheli for instance? Would you appear to be an idiot? I suspect so.
2. The minimum standard for selectees is high school education, but the average is higher than that. Statistics show that on average, immigrants are higher educated than Americans.
3. Putting education aside, people that go through an immigration journey are generally of stronger character, more determined, and have more realistic expectation than the locals. Call that guts. People with guts like that drive America on and make America more successful. Here is an example of an immigrant with guts… https://britsimonsays.com/this-is-your-african-immigrant-president-chump/
4. Lastly – you ask don’t I ask myself why I am helping these people. No. I don’t judge people the way you have. I don’t make such assumptions. Your name is typically Irish, so I could make an assumption that you are therefore an idiot, because that is the stereotype. Would that be fair? And if I did that, don’t you think it would say more about me and my character than you or yours. Yes I get frustrated with people sometimes, and some people, are their own limitation, but I don’t *judge* the people that I know nothing about…

Admittedly, great reply! I wish I wouldn’t judge people, but I do and their questions and responses beggars belief and lacks complete common sense and I wonder how these guys “get through” – why should they?
And yes Im Irish…point taken, great reply

Hello Brit!
I am a winner of Dv lottery 2018-2019 but I have a problem. The
lawyer who made my ds 260 didn’t complete the education part. In the same time i received the confirmation email and also the email for sending my documents.. I send them and I received the confirmation of documents and now I am waiting for a date of interview on September. Can you give me an information please what should I do to unlock the ds260 first or to wait the date of interview and than to unlock the ds260?
Thank you so much.
July 10, 2019 at 21:43
It is probably too late to unlock, so take your educational documents to the interview.
July 10, 2019 at 22:47
Should I unlock after I will take the date of the interview or is not nessesary just to take the eduacation documents?

Hi Brit, DV-2019 selectee here. I stumbled across your blogs recently and I am very thankful for what you do to help people like me. You see if it wasn’t for the information I got from your blogs, I would still be sitting waiting for that email from KCC. HA! Thank you, thank you.
I sent in documents that they asked for earlier this year (Feb) and until beginning of this month (July) I have not heard from KCC. After reading your blogs, I called them only to find out that they did not receive my documents – I was told to send documents before the 15th. So I sent documents again and after 2days, I called and the kind lady in KCC told me, they have received it and I am to keep calling them to check my status.
I hope it is not too late for me.
Thanks,
Grateful reader.

Hi Brit,
Thanks a lot for your notes/replies to the people questions. I usually go through all.
I am filling out the DS-260 and have the following questions:
– In the personal info section, it asks about nationality and then travel document at the first place . Later, it asks if we have another nationality and also travel doc again. I am an Iranian Canadian selectee for 2020. I plan to put “Iranian” as the first nationality because my eligibility is based on that. But, for the first travel document, it says to enter the document with which we plan to enter the US. So, I need to put my Canadian passport info. In this way, Nationality and travel doc are not in line for both sections. I.e. when it asks later if we have another nationality, I need to declare my Canadian nationality with Iranian passport as travel doc. It looks a little bit odd as the nationalities and passports are not in line in both sections. I don’t know how to address this part.
– In the previous travel info section, it asks ” Where you issued an Alien Registration Number by the Department of Homeland Security?”. I have had three to four B1/B2 visas in the past, but I cannot find any USCIS No. on the visas or stamps. I was wondering if they issue USCIS No. for tis kind of visas and I don’t know how to address this part as well.
Please advise and thanks again

1. Don’t overthink that – I don’t think it matters, BUT you must travel on the Canadian passport – so present that at the interview.
2. Answer no.

Hi. Thanks for the Video. I have a question that is really bothering me. I have a son that doesn’t live with me. I and the mom are not married and we are not in speaking terms. So now I want to apply for the forthcoming DV Lottery by October and it stated that I have to include all my kids. I have his details but have no recent photo passport of him and the Mom isn’t giving me the access to have it. Is there a way that I can apply without including his photo passport
July 12, 2019 at 05:43
No.
