DV interview questions
This question comes up often – what are the typical DV interview questions? People are nervous about the interview as if they are going to be asked some really difficult questions or be held for an hour being questioned like a prisoner!!!! I have known people who want to prepare and practice their answers to all possible questions – just to be safe!
Well RELAX! The interview is usually a complete anticlimax. In a typical Embassy appointment there will be two or three stages. It isn’t always like this, but this will give an idea.
First you will be called to a window and asked to present some minimum documentation (Passports, birth certs etc). You will be asked to pay for the fee ($330) and that might be at a cashiers window.
Then you will be called for the actual interview which will typically last a very few minutes – sometimes less than 2 minutes!
The CO will look at your paperwork, and may request additional documents. They then may ask general questions such as:-
“Where did you study?”
“What work do you normally do?”
“Where will you live in the USA?”
“Who will you live with in the USA?”
“What is your relationship with the people you will live with?”
For most people that is the most that will be asked – and they are not looking to trick you or catch you out. If something needs more explanation or documentation they may go into that – but again it isn’t normally in depth. If you have recently married, you can expect some questions about your marriage (where you met, what trips you have taken together and so on).
Obviously the best answers are the most real/honest answers. Don’t try and impress the CO or say what you think they want to hear. As long as you meet the requirements and have followed the instructions the visa will be approved!!!

Hi Brit, on the way to us do I need an x-ray on hand for dv?
July 9, 2017 at 21:07
An xray is taken at the medical and carried to the USA (usually on CD). But it is rarely handed in at the airport.
July 11, 2017 at 03:38
Hi Brit, the status of my Visa is issued how long do you think it will take before I receive it?
July 11, 2017 at 06:26
It depends on the embassy. Patience.

How can I guess the outcome without knowing ANYTHING about your case??? I’m not a Mystic Palm Reader.
August 26, 2017 at 19:25
Sir Brit, am from Cameroon. How can I change in my DS 260 that my son will not becoming with me, when I already summited it. What if I tell them at my interview will it cause any harm?
August 26, 2017 at 21:26
You simply explain at the interview. It will cost a lot more money and more time to sponsor the child later.
August 30, 2017 at 20:18

Mr. BritSimon, good day! Please my girlfriend entered DV lottery 2017 and we wasn’t married at that time but we get married before the results came and she found out she has won And my question is … She wants me to go with her and I’m 2010 dv winner and my visa was refused .. please I want to know if it will cost a problem . Because I have been there before as a DV
September 4, 2017 at 14:02
It obviously depends on why you were refused in 2010.
September 4, 2017 at 16:47
They asked me one question and I was lil confused.. so I was unable to answer that question.. and CO asked for me if I have university degree .. and I didn’t have and he refused me and gave me whites paper .. under section 212(a)(5).. and I went again with invitation on 2012 and I was refused again under section 214(b)
September 4, 2017 at 17:00
So your 2010 denial was on education grounds – since you are not the main applicant, your education is unimportant. However, you are likely to be questioned about your relationship – so only apply if your marriage is genuine.
September 4, 2017 at 17:09
Thanks a lot of your help!
September 21, 2017 at 11:11
Mr Brit. Please as me being a beneficiary I want to asked you, can they asked me about my denial on 2010? (2) should I have to use the occupation that I used for my 2010dv or I can used my current occupation? Thanks your help ?
September 21, 2017 at 13:13
They can ask you whatever they want. Will they ask about the earlier denial – I don’t know. YOur occupation is what you currently do.

September 22, 2017 at 13:52
THey return your passport within 1 to 2 weeks, and you then have up to 6 months to make the first entry to the USA.
September 22, 2017 at 20:42
Hello Brit, what is the implication of not submitting document about your affidavit of support?
Is it a must/mandatory for one to submit it?
Thank you.
September 22, 2017 at 20:55
Not all embassies ask for it, and it is not always asked for in all cases BUT if it is asked for, not providing it will mean the case is not approved.

September 26, 2017 at 17:46
Hi.
We are translating all the documents to English since our local language ia spanish. But do you think we have apostille (stamp) all the documents also?
September 26, 2017 at 19:25
That depends on local procedures. Normally the translators stamp/statement is enough since you are also presenting the original documents
September 28, 2017 at 15:28
Hello! Brits, my case is on “AP” since i took my interview on the 19sept, and i havnt receive any call yet, and Accordingly no visa is issue after the 30ofsept, so whts my
Status in this situation?
September 28, 2017 at 15:53
You cannot be issued a visa after September 30. They could deliver the passport after September 30 but the visa itself must be issued before the end of the day on September 30.
September 28, 2017 at 16:21
I know that in your bank statement, you must show that you have enough funds so that you will not become a public charge. What amount in US dollars are the CO’s looking for to cover a family of five (5)?

Hi Brit,
I have been selected for DV 2018 and based on my case number, I will probably be called on March 2018 for interview.
However, the DV 2019 entry has already begun. So, I am wondering if I can apply for it because I am dubious whether I will be called for an interview for my selection of DV 2018.
Can I apply DV 2019 too if I am selected for DV 2018 but not yet interviewed? Will it affect on my chances of being called for interview for DV 2018?
Thanks In Advance
October 26, 2017 at 12:24
Yes you can, no problem.
October 26, 2017 at 14:56

October 27, 2017 at 16:30
Please read the FAQ.
October 27, 2017 at 18:43
Hi. What if the affidavit of support wasn’t mentioned in the documents you are to bring at the embassy and its asked in case what is going to be the implication.
October 27, 2017 at 18:46
If they ask for financials and you don’t have it your application will be on hold until you satisfy that requirement.
October 27, 2017 at 20:52
Hi Brit My Girlfriend is one of a DV Selectee but we got married before the result, we decided to go along with our children one is for the both of us the other is for me. Can add the both of them???
October 27, 2017 at 21:18
You’re not very clear, but as long as she declared *her* children in the entry, that’s OK. Since you are now married you will add both children.

Hi Brit
I’m from Cameroon
I have a series baffling please l need your help.
My wife is a Dv winner2018,she don’t have an educational qualification but a hair dressing certificate and 3years Woking experience. I have two questions that need your clarification please.
Firstly, can this documents lead to the denial of visa to her?
Secondly, we submitted the documents to the KCC on “October 25 2017 and I just came to realised that the operator made mistake on her employment date, instead of December 2013,he put but December 2012.I want to know if we can correct the documents now that it is already at the KCC.help me out please I am waiting for your reply.
October 28, 2017 at 14:38
If she doesn’t meet the education requirement and her only work experience in the last 5 years is as a hairdresser, she cannot be approved. It would be a waste of money to proceed.
November 3, 2017 at 09:54
Thanks sir,
But I contacted the US embassy here in Cameroon and they told me that hair dressing can meet the requirements.
Now, what should I do sir?
November 3, 2017 at 14:10
THe technical requirement is that the job has to be job zone 4 or above. Hairdressing is a 3. So – whoever you spoke to was wrong – but it is your choice of what to do.

Hi Brit
I’m the principal applicant but my spouse’s medical Exam is not ready but mine and of my child are ready do they give us Visa of me and my child?
October 30, 2017 at 20:03
That is up to you and the CO to discuss.
October 30, 2017 at 20:25
Do you mean I have to decide whether I take my Visa or wait my spouse to complete her medical examination?
October 30, 2017 at 21:28
Depending on the circumstances, yes – you can discuss with the CO.
October 30, 2017 at 20:19
MR Bria my wife have only high school certificate is that alright
October 30, 2017 at 21:29
If you are the winner – she doesn’t need to show any education proof.
If she is the winner, she needs to meet the requirements for the embassy/education system she went through.
November 1, 2017 at 08:08
Hello my wife she winner lottery but she have high school cetrifect From 11 class and also she does have cooker certifect it is work?
November 1, 2017 at 16:33
Work as a cook will not meet the requirements. So – if your wife does not meet the education requirement applicable in your country, then she will not be approved.
November 1, 2017 at 21:22
Hi,
My girlfriend and I are currently engaged – which means unmarried status for my DV application. But we are to get married in March 2018. Should I be a DV 2019 winner, would she be able to benefit from it (as my wife) as well?

Hi, so I need some clearification, I do not have a hs diploma, but I am a chef for the past 8 years, I hold a culinary arts certificate, the plan is to continue my studies when I get to the states, I read the job zone thing but I’m still confused. My question is, should I continue the dv process of leave it be because I won’t be approved. I don’t want to waste so Much money just to not get through.
November 11, 2017 at 01:48
In reality you will have a high chance of refusal. A “Chef” has a job zone of 3 (see link). You need it to be 4.

Hi sir, I have submitted my ds260 on 19 Sept and my case number is 2018AF000044** thus I didn’t receive my 2nl. Therefore, am a little bit worried considering my case being current since I heard someone with case number 2018AF90** have already gotten his 2nl. So my queries are:
1.what could have cause to the delay of my 2nl?
2.what are the chances Of getting my 2nl within November sir?
Thanks in advance Sir. Besides am a big beneficiary Of your blog. On top of that i expect more elaborate answer from your side sir.
November 13, 2017 at 20:50
1. Your delayed submission probably caused a delay (but remember no two cases are the same – depending on your name, travel history, work etc it may take more time to process your case compared to someone else.
2. I can’t predict that.
November 15, 2017 at 22:03
Thanks a lot i have received my 2nl today and from now i got to be engrossed much on the interview preparation thus fortunately i have your back up sir. Thanks once again for the feedback. Besides i don’t mind if u gonna shed more light on how i can go about like for the interview process and how i
can successfully get my visa approved since my interview is scheduled on 11 January 2018.
November 15, 2017 at 22:20
Read the instructions and check my post on preparing for the interview.
November 15, 2017 at 20:42
Hey bro, can u tell me the question on the DV form??
November 15, 2017 at 21:48
You can read them yourself.
November 16, 2017 at 14:19
Thanks a lot Britsimons, Even tho I saw my interview appointment very late, which was 3day to the interview, you advised me to go and I did, due to time factor I was unable to take my medical report along, but during the interview period I explain every to the consular, & she told me to do my medicals & sent it to the embassy, do you think I’ll give me the visa?
November 16, 2017 at 14:33
Yes – do as you have been told quickly. If you delay into the next month, there will be a long delay to issue your visa.
November 17, 2017 at 23:13
Hello Mr.Britsimon ….Do you know how long does it take to get the green card if you are out side of the US
November 17, 2017 at 23:23
For DV cases the GC is only sent once a person enters the USA to activate their status. Once that activation has happened (and the fee paid) the GC is sent within 3 to 4 months.
November 23, 2017 at 11:37
