DV interview questions
This question comes up often – what are the typical DV interview questions? People are nervous about the interview as if they are going to be asked some really difficult questions or be held for an hour being questioned like a prisoner!!!! I have known people who want to prepare and practice their answers to all possible questions – just to be safe!
Well RELAX! The interview is usually a complete anticlimax. In a typical Embassy appointment there will be two or three stages. It isn’t always like this, but this will give an idea.
First you will be called to a window and asked to present some minimum documentation (Passports, birth certs etc). You will be asked to pay for the fee ($330) and that might be at a cashiers window.
Then you will be called for the actual interview which will typically last a very few minutes – sometimes less than 2 minutes!
The CO will look at your paperwork, and may request additional documents. They then may ask general questions such as:-
“Where did you study?”
“What work do you normally do?”
“Where will you live in the USA?”
“Who will you live with in the USA?”
“What is your relationship with the people you will live with?”
For most people that is the most that will be asked – and they are not looking to trick you or catch you out. If something needs more explanation or documentation they may go into that – but again it isn’t normally in depth. If you have recently married, you can expect some questions about your marriage (where you met, what trips you have taken together and so on).
Obviously the best answers are the most real/honest answers. Don’t try and impress the CO or say what you think they want to hear. As long as you meet the requirements and have followed the instructions the visa will be approved!!!

Hi Brit my wife won the 2018 dv program but we have not file in to KCC yet. Because 1, she forget her email account she play with 2, if we write KCC how will we get response? And finally can we sent in new email account to KCC and how. To have them informed that she lost the previous one.
November 26, 2017 at 15:05
You don’t really need the email address for anything. Just complete the DS260 and continue. You will get your interview details by checking the ESC page (where the selected letter appeared).

Brit, I missed my interview appointment, how do I reschedule?
The email notification for the appointment went into my spam folder. I discovered that on 20 November 2017, however the interview date was 13 November 2017 so I missed it big time.
Is there any chance for me to reschedule?
If “Yes” then what are the steps to follow?
I’m nervous and fraustrated
Thank You
Nana, Accra Ghana.

Hello I won the 2018 DV as the principal applicant but my husband as not get his passport yet can we go ahead filling the DS260 while trying to process his passport?
December 7, 2017 at 00:08
Yes, but it is probably better to wait until he has the passport.
December 6, 2017 at 22:48
Hi,i won the dv 2018 with my family but my husband travel for studies can I fill in the form without him?
December 7, 2017 at 00:07
Yes
December 7, 2017 at 00:15
Is it a must that I put his passport number on the form while he’s away?
December 7, 2017 at 06:09
No
December 7, 2017 at 11:18
Hi I have my dv nterbiew on 29nov 2017 and I was refused base my school certifocate I attend technical college the course I study was electrical my schpol diproma what should I do
December 7, 2017 at 14:45
THe instructions state you cannot qualify using vocational education. You must have met the requirements by general education. The refusal was probably correct, and there is no appeal process. So – there is nothing you can do.
December 8, 2017 at 05:16
Hi,am Boaz I have my high school report not a diploma certificate and my work documents, can any of these affect me? Thank you.
December 8, 2017 at 06:18
It depends whether you meet the education requirements in your country.
December 9, 2017 at 05:27
Hi Britsimon, listening to this travel ban does it have an impact to Muslims living countries like Kenya which are not among the 7 states considered. Moreover, those who won the Dv lottery and Muslims while residing in Kenya will they have an impact like of not looked into their cases or rather a form of disqualification. Thank you in advance.
December 9, 2017 at 14:43
It only concerns the listed countries.
December 11, 2017 at 00:01
Hi,
I have won DV 2018 ….. I am in relationship with my gf ….. as i was not married at the time i filled the DV form…but now i have won DV and i want to go to usa by marring her… I have not received my second letter my case number is 3053 …. I will receive my second letter most probably in this month…my doubt is that can i now add her to my family member list and go USA with her….and as i am going to marry to her after i got my second letter ….will this cause any problem during my interview and is there any chance that they might reject me at the time of interview because of this….
December 11, 2017 at 00:05
You should have married her before the 2nl. By not doing that you make an easy process more difficult.
December 11, 2017 at 00:24
If i marry her after i received my 2nl…… can i update my status of marriage as MARRIED ….and what difficulties are you talking about????
December 11, 2017 at 00:27
and bro at time i was filling my DV form …..how could i have predict that i will DV ….so i filled it as UNMARRIED
December 11, 2017 at 02:28
You should have married before the ds260. So instead you will have to discuss with the embassy what to do.
December 11, 2017 at 00:55
Hi Mr brit hope u r doing well. I’m Do 2018 and I want to ask you about my case I have a kid who was born in USA in 2015 I want to know if that will be a problem for me during the interview if the CO ask me why you give birth with your tourist visa in USA. I’m so confused about that what do you thing in this case .and I never overstay in us
Thanks for your reply
December 11, 2017 at 02:26
Just tell the truth.
December 11, 2017 at 07:09
Dear BritSimon,
Thank you very much for the amazing job that you are doing. I am also Green card lottery winner and I have already filled-in our ds 260 form. As I have almost read all your comments, suggestions, answers to the questions, now I am kind of confused about our school system. I graduated school in 1992, and then entered to the university. In our country during those years we had a secondary school, which was for 10 years, and then got our document from school, with our marks, exam data and etc. While filling our ds 260 form, in the school window i mentioned the name of the school, the years, and then on the window, where is asked about degree, diploma, certificate received, I put high school diploma, as i was thinking that the doc that we received from the on our graduation, is a diploma, though it is only secondary school. 1. Was I wrong? 2.In case if I am, should I ask the KCC to open my case, so I can do the change? 3. And if yes, would you advice me what to put – certificate or??
Thank you in advance,
With best regards,
Naira
December 11, 2017 at 14:55
1. I don’t know. I know less about your system than you do.
2. I don’t think you need to overthink this. Leave it as is.
December 11, 2017 at 17:45
Does Second Letter notification and second letter come at the same time or first notification comes and after a week later second letter comes…i am confused please help me….

December 12, 2017 at 09:23
Hi brits,my cousin is a dv2018 winner ,she has a step child from her previous marriage which she included in the entry, should she add the child again when filling the ds260 forms, and how does she indicate that the child is a step child and won’t be migrating with her.
December 12, 2017 at 14:47
She adds the child in her own form and selects the option that makes clear the child will not be emigrating.
December 12, 2017 at 14:54
Ok then, but will she be able to clarify the fact that it’s not her child, will she be asked at the interview, how will the embassy know that it’s not her biological child because she doesn’t want to be associated with the child in anyway since she is divorced.
December 12, 2017 at 14:56
She can explain.
December 12, 2017 at 15:00
Thank you very much, but lastly will she be asked to provide a birth certificate or any other document for the child who won’t be migrating with her.
December 12, 2017 at 16:51
Probably not, but if she had it – she should take it to the interview.
December 12, 2017 at 21:44
No she doesn’t have it,that is why she is worried.
2)is birth certificate also needed for biological children who won’t be migrating with the mother and want to come for them at a later date.
December 13, 2017 at 00:11
Normally birth certs are only needed for those emigrating.
December 14, 2017 at 23:27
Hi brits, back again for my cousin, she is a divorcee and hasn’t married again(single now).she wants to know if aside the divorce papers /annulment she needs to provide her previous marriage certificate too (she is worried because she doesn’t have that one)
December 15, 2017 at 03:58
Yes, she needs to show those papers.
December 15, 2017 at 06:09
You mean aside her divorce documents which is required she Needs to show her previous marriage certificate also.
December 15, 2017 at 06:14
It is better to “overprepare”
December 15, 2017 at 08:52
Hello Brit,
Good morning! Hope you’re good.
Brit, I have lost my SSCE CERTIFICATE, which I sat for the year 2000, I contact the Examination Body which is WEST AFRICA EXAMINATION COUNCIL my country, they responded that they no longer produce duplicates Certificates, however they issue ATTESTATION and or Confirmation of Results.
Will the Embassy accept this document since it’s genuine and authentic from the Exams Council in my home country?
Your responds will help me to next level of action.
Thank you for the good work, God bless you
December 15, 2017 at 15:20
You haven’t told me your country, nor do I know procedures in every embassy. So – I cannot say for certain how they will judge this. However, if documents presented at interview are not sufficient, the embassy can make their own enquiries OR tell you to obtain more documents.
December 15, 2017 at 15:35
Thank you very much Brit,
“You haven’t told me your country”. My country is Ghana.
“Nor do I know the procedures in every embassy” Since the instructions says clearly that it requires the Original of SSSCE CERTIFICATE, I fear my attestation from the Exams body may not be accepted.
If they can make inquiries by themselves, then I’m fine, but if they insist on the SSSCE CERTIFICATE, even the exams can only verify but will not issues a new Certificate.
I shall send
1: Attestation Certificate
2: Confirmation of Results and
3: Affidavit
Any more advice???
We count on you any council that proceed from you.
Regards
December 15, 2017 at 20:41
Prepare as you describe. I don’t have any further tips or advice.
December 15, 2017 at 23:04
Thank you Brit
March 29, 2018 at 12:45
u can visit the council for a new certificate it will cost u GH200,it will take u only a week to get a new certificate.
December 18, 2017 at 06:55
Dear Britsimon,
Thank you very much for your efforts with all the people, my questions is,
1- my wife is the main winner and we both have only the last university certificate which it was mentioned in DS260, so, Is a high school certificate required?
2- we left from Saudi Arabia last may 2017 we already made the police clearance certificate about at this time, so this will be accepted with this old date from may to may 2018 (our interview)?
Thanks & Regards.
December 18, 2017 at 16:45
1. For her, yes.
2. Typically, yes.
December 20, 2017 at 11:21
If they ask me with who I am going to live there is it OK if I say with myself!?
And that question “Where did you study?”, what if you didnt study anywhere will they still ask you and if so what should I answer?
December 20, 2017 at 15:23
You answer the truth. Your truth. Not my answers, yours.
December 20, 2017 at 16:02
I mean, do they expect me to live with someone, and will it lower the chances for me to get my visa/green card if I say “by myself” ?
December 20, 2017 at 17:21
No. They just expect you to have a way to support yourself (I.e. a plan).
December 25, 2017 at 13:11
Thank you very much for your efforts, my cousin and her ex-husband won the DV 2018 program together as couples and she’s the PA but will be appealing for an interview alone next month because he has back-off, but she don’t have any of their wedding photos or others photos to show them together been because of the way their three years of marriage ended, he walk out unknown to her with the impression of seeking for job out of time with the laptop, album, DC, and flat-disc/pen drive with all the pictures and video to show, when she contacted him to inform about their success in winning, he said, I don’t want to grow old with you and have showing no interest up to now but she supporting yourself. My questions is,1. Is it a chance for her to get or Visa? 2. What will she need to show or say to the CO during her interview concerning her ex-husband or photos?
December 27, 2017 at 01:20
1. Yes
2. Tell the truth.
December 27, 2017 at 09:33
Hello brit, i must admit you are doing an amazing job and needs to be duly rewarded. there’s something bothering my mind since i filled my Dv form online,On my birth certificate, passport and other relevant doc my hometown is same so while filling the form i put in a different hometown which i realize after i submitted the application online so If am selected can that hometown error be an issue in my process of getting the DV visa?
December 28, 2017 at 00:46
The time to think about this is *IF* you are selected.
December 27, 2017 at 11:12
Hello Brit, Happy Holidays,
Please I failed my SSSCE examination, does that lower my chances. I’m in Accra, Ghana.
December 28, 2017 at 00:45
If you do not meet the requirement then yes- that can cause disqualification.
December 28, 2017 at 12:40
Thank you Brit,
I have my SSSCE Confirm Result, but I want to know if the requirements demands that we have to pass some particular subjects..
Please what does the requirements say on Senior High School Certificate?
I have checked everywhere but I can’t actually get anything like getting good grades to qualify or passing in this and that subjects to qualify.
Thanks Brit. Enjoy your holidays.
December 28, 2017 at 15:24
The requirement varies by country. So – your embassy may publish the requirements, and if not, your countrymen may know.
December 28, 2017 at 19:21
Thank you very much Sir.
My interview is in January, because of my peculiar situation, I promise to share my experience after the interview to give more insight to fellow applicants IF bad grades will cause refusal or any possibility in visa approval.
God bless you, Brit.
Or if there is someone here who have had bad grade should share his/ her experience with us.
December 28, 2017 at 00:52
Thank you for your time sir.
December 30, 2017 at 18:12
Thank you Brit.
Please, with your experience can you pls help me answer these questions.., if and if anyone of them comes.
1. What the cause of your divorce?
2. Why do want the go the USA?
December 30, 2017 at 20:40
Any answers should be your genuine answers. Not what you think they want to hear.
January 5, 2018 at 09:40
Hi Brit,
My wife and I together with my 7 years daughter has won the US lottery together what are our chances of getting a visa?
January 5, 2018 at 14:41
How can I possibly say anything from what you have told me.
January 7, 2018 at 23:18
Good evening please what about if you win the lottery but dont have shs diploma.example i didnt complete shs in ghana but left for italy .in italy since was 18 years already wasnt allowed to sss but different insitution to do health care course.wil that certificate be accepted
January 8, 2018 at 03:50
The health care course is not an acceptable education. If you cannot meet the education requirement without that certificate you might not be able to be approved.
January 7, 2018 at 23:20
Please what if u change your surname after the lottery .what wil one do in such case.
January 8, 2018 at 03:50
You can provide documentation of the name change.
January 9, 2018 at 16:10
After being selected in the lottery, does it depend on how fast you fill your form that you are been call or does it depends on the numbers?
January 9, 2018 at 16:58
Both.
January 11, 2018 at 04:56
Hello Brit,
I will like to thank you for your suport. Our vissas were approved.
Let me share some of our expirience for those qualifying with job.
– Just like Brit, has said in his post, that it is better to be over prepared.
– Since i am the principal applicant with no A Level certificate, qualifying with my job. I was taken into a private room at the embassy for serious interogation. This process was just to find out if i really have the job qualification , i claimed i do. All i did was to apply the principles i have studied at Brits block post.
1 – I was truthful and relaxed.
2- I went along with my PaySlips, Employment Letter, Letter of Attestation of Work from my company, Pictures of my working site and office, An album full of our wedding pictures. I had even a video CD of my wedding.
and our vissas were issued for me and my family.
Brits , may God bless you for this good work.
January 11, 2018 at 05:39
Congratulations!
January 14, 2018 at 04:24
Halo Brit,my husband and i have been living together and we have a child..we dont have a marriage certificate because we did a traditional wedding and the dowry proces is not yet complete.when the dowry proces is complete thats when we get to do a church wedding.wil we get disqualified without the marriage certificate since i had applied as married?
January 14, 2018 at 05:48
You must be legally married before the interview.
January 14, 2018 at 17:28
Thanks for the advice.
January 17, 2018 at 12:13
Hi Brit. My case number is 453xx. 2018 selectee. Can i be precise on which month will be my interview.
January 17, 2018 at 15:01

January 19, 2018 at 08:49
Good morning. Simon. Thank for your help. I want to ask what do you think i shoukd do since i am not hearing from the embasy anymore after my interview 3months ago. I was approved i created the profile and there was no additional documents asked from me. Its really frustrating what really could be the problem? Should i follow up?
January 19, 2018 at 15:01
Have you checked your status on CEAC?
January 21, 2018 at 22:29
Hi Simon thanks gor all your help God bless you. My cousin won the 2018 dv but we haven’t recieve any letter from Kentucky in respect to wen his gonna have his interview.
We had already file the form 260 but the issue is his elder brother used his friends email in that form . my question
1 Is it possible they have send the letter and he didn’t see it? Or is it possible they haven’t send the letter?
2 . can i go edit the application and change the email?
3 what should i do right now cause he hasn’t done anything and i don’t trust that friend of his brother anymore i want to take things from here.
We have been waiting for that letter for too long now.
Am worried cause others who won are here already. Pls help thanks
January 22, 2018 at 00:24
You haven’t mentioned the case number – so you may just be waiting for that. You don’t need the email – the ESC page shows the 2NL interview details once the interview is setup.
January 22, 2018 at 15:30
The case number is Af2184#
Do i just go and imput the case number to check the status of the interview? Or is it that his case numb still far they haven’t set his interview.
January 22, 2018 at 16:59
Well you seem to be saying your case number is 40 to 49. So unless that is a mistake, that was current in the first month. Your 2NL is posted to the ESC page once scheduled.
January 25, 2018 at 05:13
Hi,im from Liberia & my case #Af3894 & I just filled the ds260 on Jan 2 so what I need to do next?will I received a letter?
January 25, 2018 at 05:44
Now you wait patiently.
February 1, 2018 at 11:46
Hello Brit Simon,
IIF I am selected for Dv 2019, does the all family have to moove or can we go 1 by one or two by two because of finance?
2/ How long after the results selection
does the interview take place?
Thanks
February 1, 2018 at 14:40
It’s a lottery and a slow process. Ask questions if you are selected.
February 7, 2018 at 10:02
Hi Brit, something is doubting me on my documents, from the day I started my primary education, now in college I used Chris P. Johnson… That is the name on all of my school documents. The confusing part here is that, when my mother when to get my birth certificate, she spelled out my middle name by saying Chris Peter Johnson….. So base on this myself used the same Chris Peter Johnson now on my marry certificate, and passport. My question here is will it effect my interview at the US Embassy?
February 7, 2018 at 14:14
No
February 7, 2018 at 10:18
My second worry…… My wife won DV 2018(PA), she played with this name: Princess Kumba Johnson, and the result came up, we saw Kumba Princess Johnson. My question here is that can this miss positioning of name affect her entry at the interview?
February 7, 2018 at 14:15
AS long as her DS260 is accurate and matches birth cert/passport, it should be OK
February 8, 2018 at 16:20
Hello Britsimon,
Hope all is well. I’m from Sierra Leone and case#2018AF354#### I filled in the DS260 since September 2017 but up till now I have got no mail yet for interview. What should I do?
February 8, 2018 at 17:23
Wait.
February 11, 2018 at 07:50
Please, I am from Ghana and have worked in the UAE for 8 months. I also applied for a Germany visa when I had admission to study over there but was denied the visa. Can the UAE visa stamp and the visa denial stamp in my passport affect my chances of getting the USA visa? Thanks
February 11, 2018 at 15:43
No
February 12, 2018 at 17:21
Hi Brit, what become of me if I sit for my WAEC 2016,and was successful, but up to now I have not yet receive my certificate, but the online result with the check card. My question here is that will out the certificate,,but have my online result and check card will I be denied at the embassy?
February 12, 2018 at 17:30
The embassy should be able to validate with the card.
February 13, 2018 at 07:33
The WAEC certificate, and the check card, which one will be asked for at the embassy?
Note: I’m from LIBERIA
February 13, 2018 at 15:10
I don’t know. (Note: I’m not from Liberia)
February 18, 2018 at 00:39
Hi Brits, greetings to you sir.
I was refused in Accra Embassy because of my SSSCE, however I qualify for Visa in Working experience, I’m a Network Engineer, have been trained for more than three years, and have more than two and a half years of experience, since April 2015.
Please what can I do? Since I CAN NOT appeal, is there any appropriate channel to address my issues?
Thank you sir.
February 18, 2018 at 02:13
No – there is nothing you can do. You should have gone to the interview with proof of your work experience.
February 19, 2018 at 06:16
Hi Brits
I won Dv lottery. but i have small confusion Is my husband qualification is also important at interview?
February 19, 2018 at 06:39
No
February 27, 2018 at 08:51
Hey there Brit. I know that I meet the education requirements of a high school diploma and I have more than the minimum 2 years work experience. Some of the work experience is part-time though. Would that dismiss me from qualification? Also I have complete my associate degree at a US college. I’ll check to confirm if it’s a vocational decree or not, but if it is, will submitting that along with my high school diploma disqualify me? Lastly, the DV requirements say “either/or” in terms of education and work experience. If one qualified me (say education) and the other didn’t, would that disqualify me as well? Thanks in advance. I appreciate your help.
February 27, 2018 at 14:42
Either/or. Says it all doesn’t it???
An associates is not vocational.
The High school education is what is important.
February 27, 2018 at 15:08
Good deal. You’re the best, BritSimon. Stay strong.
February 27, 2018 at 16:47
Dear Brit,
I won the DV18 lottery, and if everything goes will (high EU CN) i might be abe to move to the US soon. I am still a student, means: not much money. I would provide what I have and make sure to get any extra piece of supporting documents. Now, I am wondering the following: the reason why I want to go to the US is because my american boyfriend lives there. He lives in New York, and is a poor recent- graduate-looking-for-work in NYC himself, if he provided me with this support form i-134, it wouldnt really work. His parents are both retired, so that also wouldnt work. Since, I guess, the importance is to “show a plan” on how to support myself upon arrival, would it be helpful if my boyfriends parents wrote a letter stating that, once arrived, I will stay with them in their house in Philadelphia, until I have found a job up in NYC (or any job for that matter)?
That is indeed the true plan, but would it support my case if I had in in written form?
Thanks in advance!
February 27, 2018 at 17:18
The letter won’t help. Either I-134 or describe the plan.
March 7, 2018 at 12:07
I see. And what is then ment by this “host” that I hear so many talking about?
March 7, 2018 at 14:21
https://britsimonsays.com/all-about-public-charge-affidavit-of-support-i-134/
March 7, 2018 at 14:24
so host and sponsor are the same?
March 7, 2018 at 14:25
i understood that the sponsor would fill the i-134 and the host woul, well host.
March 7, 2018 at 14:41
I mean I read this:
“There are several African countries where the “host” system serves to satisfy the requirements. If the selectee is planning to stay with a host, they could be asked what is the relationship between host and selectee. If there is a good relationship (family, or close friend) the Consular Officer is allowed to use their discretion to take that as evidence that the selectee will not become a public charge.”
Now, Im not from an African country, but if that seems to be a support there, can’t it be in Germany as well?

This is very clear. I Germany you should have an I-134 – that is for the financial support. The address you give in the USA is just an address.

Hello I am from nepal and I got rejected in my interview because I had done GED (general education development/diploma) which is easily accepted by any university and colleges of US. Why is GED not accepted? Can u plz suggest me a way the how can I get the visa? embassy has given some time to me.

I am a 3years diploma nursing student and its my last year running . I will b able to attend final year exam but can’t submit the certificate upto sep.30. They have given me tym for this purpose.

The GED is specifically excluded in the rules. The education must be formal continuous education. Further, vocational training, (such as nursing training) does NOT meet the requirement either. I don’t think you can overcome the refusal if your secondary education does not meet the level needed.

Is there any other way to get the visa?
March 9, 2018 at 15:51
I have no idea of your situation. I only advise on DV.

what is the problem?

The lottery chances of winning are once in 200 years. It’s chance. That’s all.

So now this is about your friend. On January 26th, this was about your case, not your friend. You have posted so many lies in your questions to me that I don’t know or care what the truth is at this point. I have pointed out *many times* that I know you are constantly lying to me. You are, without doubt, the most habitual liar I have come across while running this blog. You would rather tell a lie than tell the truth. I would have been AMAZED, and frankly disappointed, if you had been approved, because it would have been taking a visa from someone more deserving. I told you not to waste your time/money. That is exactly what you have done, and NO – there is nothing else you can do now. The refusal is final.

hey Brits
My case number is 37xxx from Africa is just four months left i wish to find out whether i will be program for interview.

You seem to have a fairly “casual relationship” with the truth. At times in the past you have quoted different case number – but more worrying than that, you have told me that you originally entered the lottery as single even though you were actually married with children (post below).
Let me be very clear. If you entered as single with no kids, and have applied with your wife/children (thus proving you broke the rules) you are 100% certain to be disqualified – and will forfeit your application fees, medical fees and so on.
