DV interview questions
This question comes up often – what are the typical DV interview questions? People are nervous about the interview as if they are going to be asked some really difficult questions or be held for an hour being questioned like a prisoner!!!! I have known people who want to prepare and practice their answers to all possible questions – just to be safe!
Well RELAX! The interview is usually a complete anticlimax. In a typical Embassy appointment there will be two or three stages. It isn’t always like this, but this will give an idea.
First you will be called to a window and asked to present some minimum documentation (Passports, birth certs etc). You will be asked to pay for the fee ($330) and that might be at a cashiers window.
Then you will be called for the actual interview which will typically last a very few minutes – sometimes less than 2 minutes!
The CO will look at your paperwork, and may request additional documents. They then may ask general questions such as:-
“Where did you study?”
“What work do you normally do?”
“Where will you live in the USA?”
“Who will you live with in the USA?”
“What is your relationship with the people you will live with?”
For most people that is the most that will be asked – and they are not looking to trick you or catch you out. If something needs more explanation or documentation they may go into that – but again it isn’t normally in depth. If you have recently married, you can expect some questions about your marriage (where you met, what trips you have taken together and so on).
Obviously the best answers are the most real/honest answers. Don’t try and impress the CO or say what you think they want to hear. As long as you meet the requirements and have followed the instructions the visa will be approved!!!

July 14, 2018 at 15:00
A small mistake is often acceptable. Multiple mistakes increase the risk. I’m guessing you are from Ghana where mistakes like this routinely cause denial. So – it’s up to you…
July 16, 2018 at 10:31
Hi Simon,my EU case number is current for September interviews and I’m waiting now for my 2NL. My question is we moved couple of months ago from the adress we have been given at DV260.The new adress is in the same city. Should we mail KCC about it or should we just inform them by the interview?LOL
July 16, 2018 at 14:56

Hi brit today was my interview and they ask me to send additional documents like i 134 and tax clearance form so that means there is a less chances of getting visa, even i summit all required documents?
August 6, 2018 at 17:39
It means you caused a problem by not properly preparing. I suggest you get them the missing documents quickly.
August 11, 2018 at 06:08
Hi
I am living in Oceania region. Recently, I have been notified that only 100 applications were selected for September Visa Bulletin; do you think this could be the trend for the Oceania for the following months(100 applications per month)? Thanks
August 11, 2018 at 13:52
That shouldn’t be surprising. That is fairly normal to see OC moving 75 to 150 a month. That way, they spread the cases over the whole year.
August 12, 2018 at 08:56

Dear Simon, I am wondering about the question “Where will you live in the USA?”. Is the applicant bound by what he answers to this question, or can he eventually change his mind to live elsewhere, for example if a he got a better job offer? I have places in mind ie. coastal areas, but as I am applying for jobs anywhere in the US before landing, I would eventually be happy to go where I get the best offer, even in Central or Midwest areas. Thanks.
August 17, 2018 at 15:37
Live anywhere.

Hello Simon, Am from Nairobi and won the dv 2019 with my case no. being AF201900037XXX.I submitted my ds260 early this month as a single but am planning to get married to my longtime girlfriend in October. Please advise on what to do and whether it will affect my application to get a visa at the Nairobi embassy if i add her to my case.My marriage is genuine though.
Job Maina
August 27, 2018 at 16:38
It is not a problem to add a spouse – as long as the marriage can be shown to be genuine.
September 7, 2018 at 16:55
Hi sir i applied lottery last year and i got this may 15 2018 i completed my ds 260 on august at what time am i expecting to get 2NL? The other question is when i was applying lottery me and my sister we entered on one dv and used one email and by good luck we were selected both of us so her she did not continue the further process will they ask me where is she or its not problem
September 7, 2018 at 17:11
Read this for timing of interview.
https://britsimonsays.com/dv2019-basic-questions/
Regarding your entry with your sister. Do you mean you entered as “married” with her on your entry? If so – that will create concerns during the interview.
September 8, 2018 at 11:35
No just we entered as a brothers and we were selected means we shared one dv in lottery thanks
September 8, 2018 at 14:24
That makes no sense.
September 7, 2018 at 20:12
Hi Brit,
I have a burning issue. I am DV 2018AFxxxxx.
I filled in my DS 260, but while I was filling in it I made a mistake. I was asked if I have traveled outside of my country but the guy who assisted me wrongly put no meaning that I haven’t traveled, and I actually traveled outside of my country. My interview is scheduled for next week and I am confuse because I dont know how to fix it.
I am wanting of your help if there is anything I can do because there’s no time to do correction.
I really need your expertise on this.
September 7, 2018 at 21:31
If you are asked about it – just answer honestly.
September 7, 2018 at 22:32
Besides, my wife is the principal applicant and I am a derivative, and If that is done( by telling them exactly as instructed by you) is there a guarantee of being pardon?
September 7, 2018 at 22:49
“Guarantee” – no. Immigration is not a right – you don’t get guarantees.
September 8, 2018 at 00:18
Sir, am d primary applicant, d date of birth in my husband’s passport is ur different frm wat i fill in d originall entry.shld we just do affidavit, can dz b an issue during our interview.
September 8, 2018 at 01:17
Complete the DS260 accurately. As to whether the affidavit will help or not – I don’t know.
September 9, 2018 at 16:36

Dear Brit, Your information are very helpful for the new selectees. My spouse has won the visa lottery as i was born in KSA and she applied as my spouse. We lived in Pakistan but now I moved on a job in UAE in this sep and suddenly came to know that she won. Her Case no is 2019AS00003XXX and post is Islamabad. No she will be coming with children till 15 Oct. As I cannot go back to PK that why she is coming on resident visa. Can we apply from UAE embassy??? And change the location of interview when applying for DS 260 as you have already guided in you FAQs. Secondly if we apply till end of October or start of November, what is the chance of interview on this case number? Thirdly we don’t have any relative in USA and not body will sponsor us on form i-134 but we have savings, how much we have to show in bank statement for two adults and two kids. Savings are equally good as sponsor or sponsorship are having more impact. I hope you will briefly answer the question as always to others.
September 21, 2018 at 16:24
1. Yes you can interview in UAE

Dear Sir I have also asked the chances of getting the visas with respect to the case number.2019AS00003xxx.
September 22, 2018 at 05:39
I gave you a link to read.
September 24, 2018 at 23:58
Hi, can I married my partner after the interview but before travelling to the United States and stay get visa?
September 25, 2018 at 02:45
Technically, if you did that early enough in the year, it might be possible to get a DV visa for the new spouse, but the chances of it actually working in real life are low, so then you would have to use a family based process which takes around 2 years.
October 5, 2018 at 06:45
hi mr britt
ma CN is Af14×××
i am single but ma girl friend is prignant i plan to marry her if there have aproblem am just sent ma ds 260 in june.
1. ma girl friend was deind a visa before 5 month by feyonce application after the deny they brock up she went to me i love her so much if there any problem to add her in spouse ?
October 5, 2018 at 14:42
Your spelling is atrocious, but I think I understand. I think you are saying she was on a K1 visa application. You can marry her and add her to your case, but there will be some scrutiny on your relationship as your girlfriend seems to fall in love easily, and all the time with ways of moving to the USA.
October 8, 2018 at 13:28
My mother is the principal applicant and i was a derivative ,and now i have aged out (above 21) and I was unmarried and under 21 during the first day the entry begin(Oct 18,2017).So is there any chance that i could be eligible based on child status protection act ?and does this affect my mom case?

October 9, 2018 at 01:33
Were you married before she entered the lottery?
October 9, 2018 at 02:45
I married in Saudi Arabia and still in KSA
October 9, 2018 at 03:01
I married in Saudi Arabia where she entered the lottery since 2010? and my Daughter also leaving with me
October 9, 2018 at 03:53
You didn’t answer my question. If you were married before she entered and you have a child, that child should have been listed on the entry. If not, she will be disqualified.
October 13, 2018 at 05:51
Hi Brit, my wife is the winner, will the interview be only addressed to her? I assume that we will join her anyway for her interview.
October 13, 2018 at 14:13
The interview will include you.
October 21, 2018 at 21:39
Thanks Brit, shall I translate also my high shcool degree into English even though I am not the principal winner? My engineering diplome is in French/English.
October 21, 2018 at 23:50
No need.
October 22, 2018 at 10:47
hi,does it mean that if you dont have anywehere to reside in The Us you will not be able to get a visa?
October 22, 2018 at 16:29
No, but they need some address to send your GC.
October 30, 2018 at 18:28

November 3, 2018 at 08:13
Hii how are you doing.
My question is,my birth country is not my nationality,So where can i put my nationality in the DV program 2020.
November 3, 2018 at 12:55
Nationality doesn’t matter for the entry.
November 3, 2018 at 15:53
Hi Simon, my question is that for instance, if you use a ghana address and details for your entry, and you are picked and by the time of your application you are in a foreign country studying so you fill with your current address, will you have to travel back to ghana for the interview or it will be scheduled in the foreign country where you currently are? Thank you.
November 3, 2018 at 18:50
They schedule you in the country where you told them you are living.
November 7, 2018 at 17:33
Hi Brit,
During the recent days, there are serious debates in US about birthright citizenship. My granddaughter is US citizen and her parents won DV lottery.
1) Can it be the reason to reject their GREEN CARD?
2) Will that question be addressed to them during the interview (like why they had baby in US)
Thank you!
November 7, 2018 at 17:42
There have been NO serious debates. Trump talking out of his arse is not “serious debates”, and most certainly is not a change in the law.
November 7, 2018 at 19:04
Thanks and have you ever heard about addressing second part of my question during the DV interview ?
November 7, 2018 at 23:26
Maybe. They just tell the truth.
November 10, 2018 at 11:35
HI ….please i entered the DV program this year.At the educational background column, i entered university degree as my highest education. i am currently in my final year a the university and my graduation will be held next year. per my my analysis, i wont get my certificate that same year. in case i am being selected and i am scheduled for an interview without my degree certificate, is that going to be a problem? PS: I have my high school certificate intact.
November 10, 2018 at 18:48
Not a problem.
November 19, 2018 at 23:31
Hey,
Would like to know after been selected in Dv and asked to send the docs by KCC: Birth certificat, Password and Criminal Records. But being an asylee in an European country is that possible to send to KCC docs without a passport or an expired password? Or its an imperative to have a passport?
After sending those documents and how long will the send 2NL for the interview?
November 20, 2018 at 17:33
You provide a travel document and a written explanation of why your passport is not available.
Timing depends on your case number.
November 21, 2018 at 04:49
Hello Brit my name is Peter thapa from Nepal and my question is when I enter the dv lottery form i was in Nepal so I wrote in form ( the country where you live today ) is nepal and the problem is now i move here in poland before 1 month ago so can I schedule my interview in poland which is my current address right now
November 21, 2018 at 15:58
Yes, unlock your DS260, change your address, then ask KCC to update your embassy.
November 24, 2018 at 21:54
Hello Brit,I am a Liberian residing in Nigeria,is it possible for me to apply for the DVrogrM ,knowing that Nigeria no longer playing the DV?
November 25, 2018 at 05:10
Yes.
December 3, 2018 at 11:05
Good morning
IS it okay to take pictures of the documents i should mail to kCC using my iphone !? Like showing a little bit of my desk cause it’s a bit hard to only show the document …
December 3, 2018 at 15:03
No problem.
December 6, 2018 at 01:30
Hello Brit I sent kcc my form without My passport information as it isn’t ready at that time. Was it a mistake? Should I unlock my form?
December 3, 2018 at 21:08
Once again I want show my appreciation on your help, you’re providing to a lot of us however here another detail I want to get from you regarding my case – being an asylum seeker in Europe and either cannot get the passport from my home country since my procedure still on nor get the travel document from the country I’m right now because of my case still on process and what are my possibilities or alternatives I can have in this case. The Us embassy may forcibly require a passport but do have all the required documents except the travel document for now.
Please advice
December 3, 2018 at 21:17
I don’t know what you can do in that case.
December 5, 2018 at 22:37
Can I change the county for my interview before receiving the confirmation of interview.
What are my changes if I do it right now and since I cannot get the passport in the country I’m living right now! Is the case will be postponed? will it take long before I receive the new date for the interview?
December 6, 2018 at 00:58
You can do that. Whether it causes delay or not depends on how late you leave it.
December 6, 2018 at 01:19
Please I sent kcc my ds260 without fill out the passeport as it’s not ready at that time. Was it a mistake? Should I unlock my ds?
Thank
December 6, 2018 at 01:31
You can unlock and add your passport details when you have it.
