DV interview questions
This question comes up often – what are the typical DV interview questions? People are nervous about the interview as if they are going to be asked some really difficult questions or be held for an hour being questioned like a prisoner!!!! I have known people who want to prepare and practice their answers to all possible questions – just to be safe!
Well RELAX! The interview is usually a complete anticlimax. In a typical Embassy appointment there will be two or three stages. It isn’t always like this, but this will give an idea.
First you will be called to a window and asked to present some minimum documentation (Passports, birth certs etc). You will be asked to pay for the fee ($330) and that might be at a cashiers window.
Then you will be called for the actual interview which will typically last a very few minutes – sometimes less than 2 minutes!
The CO will look at your paperwork, and may request additional documents. They then may ask general questions such as:-
“Where did you study?”
“What work do you normally do?”
“Where will you live in the USA?”
“Who will you live with in the USA?”
“What is your relationship with the people you will live with?”
For most people that is the most that will be asked – and they are not looking to trick you or catch you out. If something needs more explanation or documentation they may go into that – but again it isn’t normally in depth. If you have recently married, you can expect some questions about your marriage (where you met, what trips you have taken together and so on).
Obviously the best answers are the most real/honest answers. Don’t try and impress the CO or say what you think they want to hear. As long as you meet the requirements and have followed the instructions the visa will be approved!!!

Hello Mr. Britsimon, am Jake from Ghana,am a 2014/2015 dv lottery winner,i had some problems so i coudnt apply it on time, am now ready for it,my interview date is on 9th September 2016,due to the limited time couldnt do my police clearance report and my medical.pls without those documents do i stand a chance of getting the visa since i cant res hurdle the appointment cuz of the limited time
September 8, 2016 at 21:35
You are creating your own problems, so it doesn’t seem that you are serious about getting the visa. You cannot be issued a visa without the police reports and medicals and there is a very short time left to do that before the end of the month. I would be surprised if Accra embassy take you seriously – so you must decide whether you even want to risk the interview fee of $330 (it won’t be returned if you fail).

July 27, 2019 at 01:13
If you want the Green Card I suggest you attend the interview they have already scheduled. Changing would be an unwise risk.

Hey Simon,
I am Indian National who is married to a Belgian. My wife won the green lottery and we just received our 2NL. EU 90XX is our number. My question is regarding the police clearance certificate. I’ve lived in Belgium for 6 months and will acquire residency In Belgium this November. I lived in India from birth till 23 and the US from 23 to 26. Will I have to show police clearances for both Belgium and India? Belgium I have but I can’t get the Indian one without being present in India and I can leave Belgium until I get my residence card which will be after my DVL interview date. If I go for the interview without the Indian clearance will they straight off reject me? Or if I explain the situation will they give me time to get the document and submit it?
Ps: thanks for the site. Just stumbled on to it and you are doing a great job. Much gratitude from me and the Mrs.
September 21, 2016 at 03:29
Read the instructions linked from the selection letter and in particular the reciprocity page for India. It covers your question.

Hi! My husband and I won the green card lottery (he is the primary applicant) in Australia. My husband lived in Dubai for a few years attending high school and as such needs a police clearance for the UAE. We are still waiting for them to return the clearance and our interview is now a week and a half away. All of our other documents (medicals, birth certs, high school certs, etc) are in order. Should we go ahead with the interview without the UAE police clearance (if it does not arrive in time) or potentially postpone the interview (I’m not even sure if you can do that) until it has arrived. Or, do you know if you can do the interview and submit docs afterwards? Any help would be most appreciated!!
September 30, 2016 at 19:35
Attend the interview as planned. If the document has not arrived the case will be placed on AP (technically a 221(g) refusal), pending the production of the document.

But she has u.s analian registration number, how long take time for interview? If u have any idea please answer me.
October 3, 2016 at 19:55
DV2016 has finished so your wife cannot get her visa through that process. You would now have to sponsor her on a family based case – I don’t advise on that type of case.
October 5, 2016 at 10:24

Dear Mr.Simon,
I am Egyptian DV lottery winner 2017, I traveled to Germany one month ago to study my masters Degree in a German University. I got my second letter(7 days ago) for my D.V. interview in united states Embassy in Egypt on November. I have 3 Questions:
1. As I have been for 2 months in Germany. I do not need a Police certificate from Germany? I have already my Police certificate from EGYPT.
2. I have an offer from an American University for a full scholarship (a Paid PhD. Position) which will start in January 2017. Does this could be considered as alternative to affidivit of support? ( I DO not know a person in USA to write affidivit of support for me). I also have an account in a German bank (7000 Euro).
2. Does being a Master course student in Germnay will support my position at the interview?
October 7, 2016 at 20:54
1. No
2. Your savings are not enough on their own. The University position might be enough. Egypt is pretty lenient, so I would guess you would be OK.
3. Not especially.
October 9, 2016 at 18:48

But look, your DS260 cannot be processed yet. It might be processed in time for the next batch of interviews (January) or, more likely, February/March.
Wait and see.

Hi
I am a winner of DV2017 , filled out the ds 260 form for myself and my kids and singed them and got a confirmation number for each form but I have not done it for my spouse . Does my case still get processed or should i go ahead and submit my spouses form too ? .
this is what i read on the dv website
Before we can process your Diversity Visa application, each applicant in your case must complete Form DS-260
October 12, 2016 at 21:13
You should submit his form too IF your plan is that he emigrates to the USA.

October 14, 2016 at 19:43
Hello BritSimon,
I am international student from china, can you please tell me what are some best ways to get a green card ASAP.
Thanks
October 15, 2016 at 04:49
I only advise on the DV lottery.
October 15, 2016 at 21:58
Mr. BritSimon Thank you for the advice,
But I have read some conditions on who can apply for DV and I came across a condition which states that only those can apply who are from a country that does not send more that 50,000/year immigrants to USA for past 5 years and China is sending most number of students every year. And there is also a exception for people from china who are born in some particular places like Hong Kong and others and I am not from those places.
Thanks.
October 15, 2016 at 22:30
Yes that is correct. So – if you were born in mainland China you cannot apply.

Hi Brit, I’m a 2017 Dv winner from Liberia,my question is,
(1) before i got marry to my wife, I have a child by another girl but didn’t mentioned her in my DS260 form coz i don’t have money now to sponsor the program for three persons.
Incase the CO ask me at my interview
( * do you have a child*) ?
What should I say please? Thank u again for your countless help.
October 15, 2016 at 17:01
You MUST list ALL children in your DS260 (and those children MUST have been listed in the DV entry). But you do not have to create a DS260 for a child that won’t emigrate.
October 15, 2016 at 15:10

October 26, 2016 at 01:10
Hello Brit,
I submitted my forms early September, I want to know when I’ll receive my date for the interview. And am I suppose to prepare my police and medical report before the interview date arrives?

You get the medical when the 2NL arrive, and the police cert around that same time UNLESS you know it will take longer – then apply early.

Hi Britsimon, i m Egyptain DV 2017 winner and scheduled interview early Dec; i have couple of questions 1) am i required to submit AOS (Form I- 864) or is it waived for DV winners ? 2) In one of the posts above, one was writing that he received an e-mail to register for “Curier service”.. What is cuerior service ? as i dont seem to come across it before and how can i resister for it please. 3) also, some of posts above people write “I received 1 NL and others say 2 NL ?” what are those ?
November 4, 2016 at 18:48
1. NOT the I-864, but you might possibly need the I-134. https://britsimonsays.com/all-about-public-charge-affidavit-of-support-i-134/
2. The embassy will tell you if it is needed.
3. 1NL is the “selected” letter. 2NL is the interview notification.

Yes. You WILL be disqualified if selected. They even explain how to take a photo of a newborn – so there is no excuse.

Hi Brit,
My DV2017 number has been called this month but I am still waiting for KCC’s interview notice. I was born in Malaysia, have been legally residing in the USA for almost 5 years now on an employment visa which doesn’t qualify for USCIS status adjustment, so I am taking the consular route. Do you know if I will be able to take my interview within the USA? And if I do pass the interview, how long does it take to receive my green card? Thank you.
November 11, 2016 at 07:23
Interviews in the USA are adjustment of status. Consular processing is performed outside of the USA. With CP you get a visa within 1 to 2 weeks, then you enter the USA and become an LPR.

hi,
i am a 2017 vd winner and my case # is 2017AF00040*********when is my interview.
i also have biological children above 21 who are not migrating with me and not part of the program.should i list them on my ds 260 form as my children even though it is clear that they are not migrating with me,but are my biological children i even declared them before at the US embassy during my visiting visa interview 6 years ago.
November 22, 2016 at 15:43
I can’t tell what case number range that means. No need to list the children over 21.
November 22, 2016 at 16:03
Does that means my program will be disqualified on interview day if I listed them on my form ? Even if I answered NO to question on my form stating that they are not migrating with me. Knowing fully well the d Embassy already had my record in it data base before when I applied for visiting visa n listed all of my biological children .will I not be lying under oath n be denied for that. Or is there any reason I can give along with supporting documents that they are above 21 years but are my children that is the reason they are not mentioned on my ds260 form?
Please help me with the clear procedure as am really confused.
Thanks
Tutu
November 22, 2016 at 16:50
No it does not mean disqualification if you did not OR did mention the children over 21. RELAX!!!!
November 22, 2016 at 16:05
