OK – so we are 24 hours into the process and I am having a LOT of people who can’t get their results. Because of the session time out issue last year, or because they have asked their friends and no one they know won, many have jumped to the conclusion that a similar issue is happening this year. So let me start by saying this.
THERE IS NO SYSTEM ISSUE STOPPING RESULTS BEING CHECKED.
Performance of the system was predictably slow yesterday, but everything is fine now.
I have now checked a number of cases where people had been “trying for hours” getting session time outs or invalid cases. They gave me their login details (Conf number/Name/Year of birth). Without exception, EACH ONE of them came back with a result on my first try. So – I am not going to check any more individual cases – but I will give these tips on checking your own case.
- If you don’t start with a new browser session you may cause your own session time out. Close your browser, get your confirmation number ready and open a new browser session. Then go straight to the ESC site to enter your details.
- Enter the confirmation code from the confirmation. It is best to cut and paste. Some people who try to type in the code are confusing letters and numbers like 1 instead of I (that is I as in IDIOT). Cut and paste removes that possibility.
- Your confirmation code should start with 2017 and be 16 characters in total. Make sure you don’t have a space in there at the end.
- Next enter your lastname. If the movie star John Wayne had entered the lottery that would be WAYNE. Just “Wayne”. The confirmation shows the names reversed so John Wayne would see his confirmation as Wayne, John. He would enter the lastname as shown before the comma.
- Then the four digit year of birth. Such as “1993”.
- Enter the CAPTCHA code and click the button. If you do that, you will see your result.
Other Questions I have been asked.
Q. Will there be a second draw or why does it say you have not been selected at this time?
A. In some previous years there have been some new winners released (a second draw) a few months after the May results. That happened last in 2013. It is not very likely to happen and if it does happen it would only be a few extra cases. But it is for that reason they tell you to keep your number so check again in October.
***Update September 6, 2016 – the 2nd draw is confirmed https://britsimonsays.com/dv-2017-2nd-draw-additional-selectees-chosen/ ****
Q. Can I enter the next lottery in October?
A. Yes. Regardless of whether you were selected or not, you can enter.
Q. Why did they not quote the number of winners on the selectee letter this year?
A. I don’t know, but since that number was usually inaccurate anyway I am pleased they did not.
Q. When will we know the selectees from each country?
A. Probably in the next Visa Bulletin (in a week from now).
Q. Why did none of the people I know win?
A. Because it is a lottery with a low chance of winning. If you asked 1000 people that entered and have checked their result (which I doubt you have), you would only find 10 winners.
Q. Why do so few people from my country get chosen – it seems unfair?
A. It is a random lottery and the chances of winning are the same for everyone in a region (bar a few countries that have enormous entry numbers). So, if few people from your country enter, few will win. As simple as that.
Q. My number is 2017XXXXXXXX is it safe and when will I be interviewed?
A. It is too early for me to know at the moment. We need more information and even with information you need to understand this process takes a long time and takes patience.
Q. I won, when will they send my Green Card?
A. There is a process and you must be interviewed. Interviews are spread out over the whole of the fiscal year, starting in October 2016 and ending in September 2017. Your case number determines when you will be interviewed. DO NOT change your life (like selling your house or quitting your job) until you have been approved. Some people are refused and EVERYONE has to wait.
I hope that helps. Please read other articles on my site. Almost every question I am asked is already answered in something (a FAQ or blog post) I have already written, so if you want this opportunity you should be prepared to read some of my articles to make sure you are informed.

Hello Simon, I hope you are find and thanks so much for your afford. Can you please help me understand my problem, I have been denied twice, the first was conference in 2012 and second is visiting in 2013.my family and I just won 2017 dv. My wife is the PA and she wow. What I continue with her on our program or I can’t because of old recorded? My second question here is, I met my wife with a kid with out father and I took her as my biological daughter. Her name is of all my insnsuran, do I have to adopt her before traveling to the United States or step child. We all play as family. I will highly appreciate your response
May 4, 2016 at 16:58
The previous denials were for non immigrant visas and won’t be an issue.
You do not have to adopt your daughter, she is eligible as a step child.
May 4, 2016 at 16:59
Hello my name is, I introduced the name and succeeded in the lottery you can switch the name in the ds260
May 4, 2016 at 17:01
Simon , even if i say im wrote the 2017 information wrong , so i cant go to see my results . What about 2016? I cant even see that to , says invalid information. Did they took it of because I wasn’t selected ? ( i lost both 2016 and 2017 number , i used to check my 2016 but cant anymore)
May 4, 2016 at 17:27
You lost both numbers and can’t figure out how to use the lost confirmation number functionality! Considering this is a life changing issue, you are not taking it seriously at all. It sounds like you won’t be getting a Green Card through the lottery. I don’t mean to sound harsh, but really – you have to take some responsibility…..
May 4, 2016 at 18:09
Thanks but i know my birthday name and all other informations and i used to check 2016 over and over again , although I wasn’t selected , y can i see that again ?
May 4, 2016 at 18:48
2016 and 2017 results are both available at the same time….
May 4, 2016 at 19:35
Thank you simon , and ill try to be more organized. Promise , and take life more seriously
May 4, 2016 at 17:48

May 4, 2016 at 19:08
Hello dear, I have 02 selcetee for this year out of 125 in my list, which’s very positive outcome, with very small and low case number !! just I have question about one who hasn’t got his Baccalaureate he’s just 23 yrs, (with very low CN less than 1000) and he’s going to pass the exam on 29th May 2016 and the result gonna be on 6th July, so what do you advise us about filing his DS 260, we are fearing to waste time when asking KCC to unlock his DS 260 after filing it out. Thank you
May 4, 2016 at 19:21
Since he is already scheduled he cannot now unlock anyway. So – he should simply attend the interview as scheduled.
May 4, 2016 at 19:50
He’s just got won last night.
May 4, 2016 at 20:52
Ahhh I see. I suggest he submits the DS260 early and then unlocks to correct later. That might cause a short delay – but so what???
May 4, 2016 at 20:22
Hello, I am selected for DV 2017. While filling initial Electronic diversity visa entry form, in education part I selected masters degree. However I am still a student in graduate school. Is it going to effect my interview?
May 4, 2016 at 20:50
No.
May 4, 2016 at 20:46
A friend got this message:
Based on the information provided, the Entry HAS NOT BEEN SELECTED for further processing for the Electronic Diversity Visa program at this time.
Please verify that you have entered all information correctly. You may recheck the entry status by clicking on the ESC Home Page link below.
What does ‘at this time’ mean? Does ‘at this time’ suggest that it might change?
My questions is: Is this final or temporary/likely to change?
May 4, 2016 at 20:48
That is the very first Question I answered in the article above. PLEASE read it!!
May 4, 2016 at 21:25
Hi Simon,
Apologies for being annoying and I’m happy to donate. I copy/paste/enter the number, name etc on multiple occasions. I have the confirmation email in front of me and the ‘ Warning: The information entered is not valid.’ still comes up.
I don’t have bad eyesight and english is my first language. I am very confused, is there any other reason why this could be the case? i.e. entering the comp twice, my confirmation not being recognized etc.
Thanks so much for your help, I have read and digested the above post.
May 5, 2016 at 00:01
“I don’t have bad eyesight and english is my first language.”
Lol.
Email the details to me. britsimon3 at gmail.

May 4, 2016 at 22:34
How good of a number is 2017SA000000X7…Can an interview for this number be scheduled in the next coming months?
May 4, 2016 at 23:55
X7? Do you mean a number less than 100? That would be a good number, and it could be interviewed in October IF the DS260 is processed by then.
May 5, 2016 at 00:11
Yeah it’s less than 100. I assume It should be a good number.
May 5, 2016 at 00:15
Yup.
May 5, 2016 at 16:07
please someone has selected with very low CN, but he doesn’t have BAC degree, what should he do?
May 5, 2016 at 01:19
Hey Mate
So I was successful at this first stage and now my partner and I are organising a quick wedding (been living together for seven years, so no issues in proving a sincere relationship). Do you think there is any issue waiting 3-4 weeks from this initial notice of success to then lodging my DS260 (after the wedding) so I can add my partners details onto my application?
May 5, 2016 at 01:20
Oh, and I should add in that my case number was in the XXXX250 region from Australia.
May 5, 2016 at 04:20
No issue. It might delay you by a month or so – but so what.
May 5, 2016 at 03:11

May 5, 2016 at 13:51
Starting a new session – correct.
May 5, 2016 at 09:17
dear sir
one question ?
i read on an social security card site that a dv winner who apllied the ds260?and agreed to have an ss card on the form !!!! the ss card will arrive at his mailing address two weeks after his arrival at the usa ???? is this correct or i misread the the instruction!!!
that means i dont hv to go in person to the ssc office !!!
thank u
May 5, 2016 at 13:51
That is correct, but in many cases the SSN is not sent – so in that case people have to go to the SSA office.
May 5, 2016 at 10:08

May 5, 2016 at 12:14
Hi Simon
I am Nepalese.
My case no. Is 6872 for the year of 2017. I haven’t submit ds260 yet. How long time I have to submit ds260??
And I stayed in dubai for 2 and half years untill 2015 but I don’t have police clearance report and work experience letter from dubai. Does it will effect on my process? ? Please give me some advice
May 5, 2016 at 13:40
You won’t be interviewed for about a year from now at the earliest, so you can delay your DS260 submission for MONTHS with no issue. During those months you have plenty of time to read the instructions linked from your selected letter, which answer your police certificate question.
May 5, 2016 at 12:16
Dear Simon,
So sad, me n my husband from Indonesia >> Not Selected.
I read in green-card.com, annual green card Indonesian winners statistics :
2012 : 215
2013 : 379
2014 : 288
2015 : 126
Do you think the number will reduce 2016 and 2017? Do you know why?
Thank you
May 5, 2016 at 13:38
If less people enter, less people are selected.
May 5, 2016 at 17:12
I see. Thank you Simon.

I lost my confirmation number and now I cannot get into my email cause the email I selected when I applied is now closed as it was from a domain I stopped having some months ago.
Does anybody know what can I do to get my confirmation number again so I could check whether I was selected or not?
Thanks,
S.
May 5, 2016 at 14:38
Use the lost confirmation number link. You only need to know the email address, not access the email account.

Thanks Mr. Simon
May 5, 2016 at 16:27
That is not a problem.
May 5, 2016 at 19:55
Hi simon, I have been reading through your comments trying to understand how are you figuring out whether the number is good or bad, but I couldn’t. I was selected and here’s my case number: 2017AS5560
When should I expect my interview? (I mean late 2016 or 2017)
May 5, 2016 at 20:36
Hello,
I have applied for dv2017, but since 3rd of May every time when I enter it’s written “Session timed out”. I have checked a lot of times from differente computers and browsers, also I have cleaned cache and cookies, I have pressed F5, of course every time I use copy-paste for confirmation number… Is there something more what I can do, except waiting?
Grateful, K. 😉
May 5, 2016 at 21:01
Waiting won’t solve the problem. There is nothing wrong with the system. You are doing something wrong.
May 6, 2016 at 12:42
Last year, I had the same problem for 3 days. the it said that I had been selected.
May be it’s the same for you.
May 6, 2016 at 15:00
Last year was different. This year, there is no problem.
May 6, 2016 at 15:55
But, then I don’t know where the problem is. I have checked status for my boyfriend and friend and they were not selected, so I want to say that this checking is not my first time. Also, I have mentioned waiting, because on fb page (I’m not sure is it official page) “Green Card DV Lottery Instructions” on 4th of May It’s written: -VERY IMPORTANT!!! -> If you see “Session Timed Out” – Try checking again! There were too many people trying to check at the same time. If you have logged into the system and it said you were not selected, then you do not have to check again.
Still, any idea is welcome… BritSimon thank You for answering and Tako I hope that I will be lucky as you were. 😉

DV2018 will go ahead and probably 2019. After that – who knows….
May 5, 2016 at 23:05
What is the number of winners by country
May 6, 2016 at 00:15
We don’t know yet.
May 5, 2016 at 23:06
Simon goodnight since May 3 I try to access the results of dv lottery 2017 still without success: Warning: The information ENTERED is not valid.
Please review the Confirmation Number, your Last / Family Name, and Year of Birth to Ensure you-have ENTERED Them As They APPEAR exactly is your DV Confirmation Page, Including punctuation.
and sometimes session timed out
and I have not any fault commi
thank you in advance
May 6, 2016 at 00:15
You are doing it wrong. Probably entering the whole name, not just the name in front of the comma
May 6, 2016 at 01:55
Hello. I am very greatiful to know if I can find my answers from you Mr. Brit !!!
First I’ve been selected for a dv lottery just two days ago eu00019xxx and
Sec just before I found out that I was selected I was about to pay the application fee for an interview for F1 visa ( I’ve been accepted to a college that I want to continue my studies which I should be starting on August of this year).
1 – Should i continue to get the f1 visa or will there be a risk for dv lottery process?
2- Should I start to fill out the ds260 form now?
3- Do you think there will be a risk for not getting 2NL letter or not being curent?
4- Can I do AOS inside the us if I get the f1 visa?
Thx alot
May 6, 2016 at 03:25
Use numbers for multiple questions.
1. No risk to the DV. However, immigrant intent may threaten the F1 approval.
2. Delay submitting the DS260 until the F1 is finalized (or forget F1 and focus on DV)..
3. No.
4. Yes
May 6, 2016 at 09:48
One more little thing I forgot to mention that Ive been refused twice in gettin a j1 visa and a b1 visa before I applied for f1. If i get f1 visa should i cancel and wait until i get dv or i can delay as you said and get in us and start AoS.
What’s your suggestion?
May 6, 2016 at 15:12
You must make up your own mind.
June 8, 2016 at 08:33
Your case is the same with me. Currently I just focus on my F1 visa. For DV, I will find the way later. Otherwise I’m going crazy for it.
May 6, 2016 at 03:44
“Some people who try to type in the code are confusing letters and numbers like 1 instead of I (that is I as in IDIOT)” … Lol. Nice subtle diss there BritSimon!
May 6, 2016 at 03:54
The word just came in to my head – I don’t know why….
😉
May 6, 2016 at 04:55
Hello Britsimon,
Could I have your opinion for the following issues with DV-2016
For some reason I couldn’t check my entry status before and found out just now ( May 4, 2016) that I won and was selected .
I filled out and sent DS260 to KCC in the same day.
Case number 2016EU00015***
Based on the information from your forum it can take up to 3 month to schedule the interview so should the visas still be available for this time? Is it still not late?
Is it any chance that I can still be called for the interview since my number is current?
If yes, when approximately it could be?
Other question is DS-260 has expiration date?
When I opened the form at the right top corner it said: Expiration Date: 03/31/2016
Thanks in advance.
May 6, 2016 at 05:18
You will be scheduled – there is time. Processing takes around 4 weeks now. So, you might get an August interview, and if not, September.
The DS260 date is not an issue.
May 6, 2016 at 08:11
Hi Simon,
I’m a 2017 winner, and I submitted my DS-260 straight away. My case number is 2017AS55xx how good or bad is this number (will i be scheduled for an interview late this year or next year) if that something you can tell?
Thanks
May 6, 2016 at 15:13
Interview next year.
May 6, 2016 at 10:57
Hello Mr. Simon, how are you doing and the family? I hope all is well with you. My friend have a problem with his middle name doing the time of entry. His real middle name is Garyah, but mistakenly it was spilled wrong with Garvah. Is there any problem that?
Thanks Mr. Simon
May 6, 2016 at 15:10
At some embassies that would be a problem, at others, it would not. It must be correct in the DS260.
May 6, 2016 at 12:40
Hi simon, i have won 2017. I was going to get married in 3 months time and i git engaged 1 year ago. I want to choose the most secure way. Is it ok if i get married next week so i can include her in my ds 260? I appreciate ur reponse
May 6, 2016 at 15:03
Please read the FAQ. There is an article on getting married during the DV process.
https://britsimonsays.com/dv-faq/
May 6, 2016 at 20:27
Ho simon i read that. I could not relate it to my issue. My wedding is up in 2 months but i cant wait till then to fill out ds-260. Woul it be fine if i get married this week and fill out the form next week as married in order to avoid further delay in my process or this is going to be odd! If so i have to fill out the form and again in 2 months time ask them to unlock my file so i can add her. Thank you
May 6, 2016 at 20:35
You can do it either way. Marry and then submit, or submit as single and unlock/correct once married.
May 6, 2016 at 15:42
Very good resource here Simon – this site. Just like some other folks in here, I was successful with the DV17 lottery. 2017SA2XX..interview this year or next? Also, does it matter which embassy you do the interview at? In my case, I can choose between Canada or the Caribbean. Just wondering if, based on your experience, you would have one recommendation over the other.
Thanks!
May 6, 2016 at 16:25
Low number, so interview this year if you submit your DS260 early.
You interview where you live, not where you want.
May 6, 2016 at 16:45
Thanks…but you actually are given the option to choose where you would like to have your interview done. I wish that I had saved a screenshot of this..
May 6, 2016 at 17:27
Yes, but in practice they need some “reason” to schedule you at an embassy away from home – otherwise they just assign your home embassy.

Hello Simon.. the CAPTCHA rule has denied you the precious data. Do we people in high series(2016 oldies) of AF 55k still have hope? Stay blessed and appreciated.

I wasn’t confident to predict before when I had the data. I am obviously less confident to predict now without the data. “Wait and see”…

HI brit, I am Sandra , the server write me the information entered is not valid but I write all info correctly, what is the problem
May 6, 2016 at 16:20
You are entering information incorrectly – most likely getting the confirmation code wrong, or not using ONLY your lastname (the name BEFORE the comma on the confirmation).

Hi Simon, my name is Francis i have been selected for the DV 2017, my case number is 2017AF00004XXX, how good is this number and how soon will i attend my interview

That number will most likely be current in October. So – if you want an interview in October you should submit your DS260 immediately.

Hello Simon,
Can you please give me your opinion.
I was selected for DV-2016 but didn’t now about it since coudn’t check the status.
2 month ago my family and me applied for non-immigrant investor visa and were refused.
We were also ask if we knew about dv-lottery results and we honestly answer that we didn’t know but we participated in it.
Recently in my surprise I found out about our selection and sent after that DS-260 to KCC.
Our number is already passed so the interview can be schedule soon.
Is it can be the issue that we applied for non-immigrant visa with no intention to stay ( as didn’t know that we won) and the same time were selected for dv lottery?
Thanks.

The previous denial should not caue a problem. You have left it very late to submit, but they should have time to process the DS260 and schedule you in August or September.
