OK – so we are 24 hours into the process and I am having a LOT of people who can’t get their results. Because of the session time out issue last year, or because they have asked their friends and no one they know won, many have jumped to the conclusion that a similar issue is happening this year. So let me start by saying this.
THERE IS NO SYSTEM ISSUE STOPPING RESULTS BEING CHECKED.
Performance of the system was predictably slow yesterday, but everything is fine now.
I have now checked a number of cases where people had been “trying for hours” getting session time outs or invalid cases. They gave me their login details (Conf number/Name/Year of birth). Without exception, EACH ONE of them came back with a result on my first try. So – I am not going to check any more individual cases – but I will give these tips on checking your own case.
- If you don’t start with a new browser session you may cause your own session time out. Close your browser, get your confirmation number ready and open a new browser session. Then go straight to the ESC site to enter your details.
- Enter the confirmation code from the confirmation. It is best to cut and paste. Some people who try to type in the code are confusing letters and numbers like 1 instead of I (that is I as in IDIOT). Cut and paste removes that possibility.
- Your confirmation code should start with 2017 and be 16 characters in total. Make sure you don’t have a space in there at the end.
- Next enter your lastname. If the movie star John Wayne had entered the lottery that would be WAYNE. Just “Wayne”. The confirmation shows the names reversed so John Wayne would see his confirmation as Wayne, John. He would enter the lastname as shown before the comma.
- Then the four digit year of birth. Such as “1993”.
- Enter the CAPTCHA code and click the button. If you do that, you will see your result.
Other Questions I have been asked.
Q. Will there be a second draw or why does it say you have not been selected at this time?
A. In some previous years there have been some new winners released (a second draw) a few months after the May results. That happened last in 2013. It is not very likely to happen and if it does happen it would only be a few extra cases. But it is for that reason they tell you to keep your number so check again in October.
***Update September 6, 2016 – the 2nd draw is confirmed https://britsimonsays.com/dv-2017-2nd-draw-additional-selectees-chosen/ ****
Q. Can I enter the next lottery in October?
A. Yes. Regardless of whether you were selected or not, you can enter.
Q. Why did they not quote the number of winners on the selectee letter this year?
A. I don’t know, but since that number was usually inaccurate anyway I am pleased they did not.
Q. When will we know the selectees from each country?
A. Probably in the next Visa Bulletin (in a week from now).
Q. Why did none of the people I know win?
A. Because it is a lottery with a low chance of winning. If you asked 1000 people that entered and have checked their result (which I doubt you have), you would only find 10 winners.
Q. Why do so few people from my country get chosen – it seems unfair?
A. It is a random lottery and the chances of winning are the same for everyone in a region (bar a few countries that have enormous entry numbers). So, if few people from your country enter, few will win. As simple as that.
Q. My number is 2017XXXXXXXX is it safe and when will I be interviewed?
A. It is too early for me to know at the moment. We need more information and even with information you need to understand this process takes a long time and takes patience.
Q. I won, when will they send my Green Card?
A. There is a process and you must be interviewed. Interviews are spread out over the whole of the fiscal year, starting in October 2016 and ending in September 2017. Your case number determines when you will be interviewed. DO NOT change your life (like selling your house or quitting your job) until you have been approved. Some people are refused and EVERYONE has to wait.
I hope that helps. Please read other articles on my site. Almost every question I am asked is already answered in something (a FAQ or blog post) I have already written, so if you want this opportunity you should be prepared to read some of my articles to make sure you are informed.

Oh sure, the education requirement perfect
May 7, 2016 at 02:35
Then no issue.

hi Simon
i send you a message to check my results.
May 8, 2016 at 06:11
Hi,
I could not find any similar question for DV2017 so I have to ask 🙂
My case number is 2017EU00012xxx. Is this good or bad number ? If there is a chance to get invitation to interview, what month would it be and when would they let me know about it ? Or is it too early to say anything ?
May 8, 2016 at 06:50
Good number but we need more info to guess dates.
May 8, 2016 at 10:48
I’ve been reading your blog and www about VB but still I can’t completely figure it out. Europe had 28000 in May, June 34000. What does it mean ? Why the gap ? My number is 12xxx so I should just keep my fingres cross and hope that number will not get lower than my number. Were can I find 2016 final VB number for EU ?
May 8, 2016 at 15:19
You seem very confused. If your case is DV2016EU, then you have been current for months. 28000 and 34400 were both above your number. You should have been interviewed by now. Did you submit your DS260???
May 8, 2016 at 15:49
No my case number is DV2017EU (2017eu00012xxx). I did submit ds-260 right away. It seems I have missundestood visa bulletin. I just need to wait and see if I ever get invitation to interview.
May 8, 2016 at 17:13
Dear Mr. Simon,
thank you for your advice
but i still don’t know what exactly i should do so please im in need of your help on the following points
, i appreciate everything you are doing!!!
as i first made my entry for dv-2017, i entered my family name as “WOLDEEYESUS”
on my university degree it is “WOLDEYESUS” / this is the right style which has been used by my brother and my father)
but still on my HIGHSCHOOL certificate it is again “WOLDEEYESUS” , same as it is on my dv entry name
-> I don’t have a passport yet and haven’t submitted DS260
1. Should I make my passport have the same family name as my ENTRY, that is, “WOLDEEYESUS” SO THAT I WILL NOT CHANGE IT when i submit DS260 (** since it is like that too on my HIGHSCHOOL certificate) ?????
2. or should i change it to “WOLDEYESUS”(which is used by my father) when submitting DS260 and use the same name on my passport ????
is there a risk in changing a family name on the ENTRY when filling DS260???
3. I also made a mistake on my date of birth ( it is 13 jan.) in my dv2017 entry and entered “12 jan.)
i know i will have to correct this on DS260
but will such alternations on the ENTRY when filling DS260 end up in creating suspitions and contribute for DENIAL????????,,
May 8, 2016 at 20:45
You need to think this through yourself. General guidance – Your DS260 names should match your passport. Education docs may show a difference – that is OK.
May 8, 2016 at 20:54
Hi Mr. Simon, I hope you are doing great today? Please help me, my wife and I got married while she was still in school. It’s compulsory for her to used my last name on her school documents?
Thanks Mr. Simon
May 8, 2016 at 21:22
No
May 8, 2016 at 21:32
Thanks Mr. Simon
May 9, 2016 at 01:05
dear sir…I had not being selected for DV2017…and I wanna fill the next entry can I use the same photo ?…or does it have anything to strength my case?..regards.
May 9, 2016 at 02:10
The instructions say to use a recent photo. Why take the risk of ignoring the instructions????
May 9, 2016 at 08:08
Hello All, This is a question re the photo. If, when entering the lottery and you use their online photo validater, and you do get the message that you submission was successful, does it automatically mean the photo was to the right standard? In other words, could the photo still be ‘bad’ and thus disqualifying, despite getting the successful confirmation? Many thanks.
May 9, 2016 at 16:36
The photo could still be bad. To illustrate the point – You could take a photo of your dog. That photo will pass the validation, but you would then be disqualified.
May 9, 2016 at 17:59
Thanks again for clearing that up, cheers.
May 9, 2016 at 09:38
Thank you so much for all the valuable information, I have three questions:
I’ve won the DV Diversity 2017.
1) My case number is: 2016AF000089xx, I haven’t completed the DS260 form yet, when would I expect to be interviewed?
2) I’m confused about the interview location. I have a Business B1 Visa to attend a conference in the United States which will expire in late October 2016, and I was considering to go there before my visa expires. So since all appointments will be scheduled from October 2016 onward, shall I choose “physically present in the US” and provide address of a relative residing in the US or I can just put my current address and unlock the form and change it later?
3) My mother-who is in her 60s-had applied for the DV Diversity 2017 lottery but she has not been selected, is there any way to include her in my application?
May 9, 2016 at 12:42
Sorry *2017AF000089xx not 2016
May 9, 2016 at 16:32
You quoted your number incorrectly – it should start with 2017.
1. At least one year from now.
2. You cannot stay in the US long enough to adjust status while there. Interview at home.
3. No, not through your DV case. Once you are in the USA you can sponsor her through family based immigration.
May 9, 2016 at 12:23
Hello Mr. Simon, I hope all is well with you. My friend need your assistance, can you please help him understand his problem ? He and his family are scheduled for July interview and his two kids with his wife. His wife is the principal appreciate and he is seriously sick, will the interview continue with the others With out his present?
Thanks Mr. Simon
May 9, 2016 at 15:03
No. She must be there.
May 9, 2016 at 17:17
Thank you again Simon. I cannot remember the EXACT dates of places that I have lived. I lived in the US for a very long time, changing addresses over the period of time because of school, work, etc etc…I have tried my best to obtain the exact dates of leases etc but for some (a good number) of them, I just cannot get them. Would this pose a problem? I submitted the DS 260 with approximate dates.
May 9, 2016 at 17:31
Approximate dates is ok.
May 9, 2016 at 17:36
Thanks. One last question. I was in a common law relationship with my GF in Canada (and we submitted taxes in Canada one year as such). In Canada common law qualifies as married. In the US common law is not recognized. On one of the forms DS 260, it asks whether you have ever been married. I answered no. Should I have said yes?
May 9, 2016 at 18:23
No was the correct answer.
May 9, 2016 at 19:14
hi, i cant check my status…i receive this msg: Warning: The information entered is not valid.
im typing the confirmation number correctly and last name only and year of birth , some people have a same probleme this year .
May 9, 2016 at 21:30
Every single case I have looked at like this is caused by the selectee making a mistake, or not following the instructions. EVERY case.
May 10, 2016 at 14:04
Hi Brit, kindly help me check my status,i am a kenyan but i cant get the results even after putting the correct information.
May 10, 2016 at 14:10
send the details to
britsimon3 at gmail
May 10, 2016 at 21:10
Hey Simon, I will apologize even before asking the question. I have been trying to open up the other link “Ask questions here” and it crashes my computer every single time – but I suspect that the answer to my question is in there somewhere.
For police certificates, is there an expiry on them? What I mean is, if I get my certs now, how long would they be good for, for the DV process? Also, would I need to get a police cert from each province that I have lived in, in Canada?
Thanks!
May 10, 2016 at 21:18
The police checks have a natural expiry. By that I mean you could have a clean police check from last week, and then get caught on a bank robbery today, thus invalidating your police check. So – it is better to get them much nearer the interview.
The reciprocity page for Canada describes police checks….
https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/fees/reciprocity-by-country/CA.html
May 10, 2016 at 21:39
Ok, fantastic, thanks! I thought it was like Canada who states that the certs cannot be older than six months…or something to that effect.
May 10, 2016 at 21:45
Yes, 6 months is fairly standard, but COs have asked for newer, and accepted older. Common sense says don’t make it too old.
May 10, 2016 at 22:03
Oh okay…I need to get from outside of Canada as well, so I may as well get them from now since I do not reside in these places anymore…and get the Canadian ones closer to the date.
July 11, 2016 at 11:03
Dear Mr Simon,
Can i check my DV lottery 2017 result now

Saliha
July 11, 2016 at 15:00

May 11, 2016 at 14:13

May 11, 2016 at 13:06
Dear Simon,
in the primary edv my date of birth as 12 jun.im from ethiopia and we have our own different calendar.
->> on my birth certificate also it says 12 jun. but now i checked it through date converter apps and learned that the correct conversion is 13 jun.
1.so should i go on with my birth certificate or shoud i get another birth certificate with the right date conversion and correct it on the DS260?
2. wil they use a date conversion system to check on my date of birth if i make it to the interview?
thank you for ur help!!!!!!!
May 11, 2016 at 14:01
1. DO NOT change documents! Just make sure the DS260 is correct and they will understand the mistake.
2. I don’t know

I have won the lottery this year and suppose to fill in the online DS-260 Form.
My wife is expecting a baby in Nov. 2016, and I would like to add the new baby to the form.
Do you recommend filling the form now, or wait till the delivery?
May 13, 2016 at 12:28
Now. Then unlock after the baby is born.
May 13, 2016 at 11:10

May 13, 2016 at 12:15
The system is working. You are doing something wrong. Re-read the tips above, clear your browser (or change your browser/PC) and try again.
May 13, 2016 at 23:34
Hello Simon,in DS260 in the field which asks Do You Have Other Occupation when i want to enter my other occupation it gives me Duplication error since my other occupation also comes under business category. Should I chose Other instead of Business? Thanks a lot
May 13, 2016 at 23:38
If you want. Do what you need to do to save the form – this detail is not going to affect approval one way or the other.
May 15, 2016 at 03:09
Hi Simo,
Good job ur doing man! we really appreciate.

I am certain it is something you are doing wrong. Try a different browser (chrome versus IE for example).
If you really can’t figure it out, email me – britsimon3 at gmail.
May 15, 2016 at 13:50
Hi Mr Brit Simon,
What a wonderful assistance you’ve been providing?
I have some few questions for which I need your help to clarify.(2017AF000xXXXX)
1.How does Ghana embassy handles ‘Host system’ in reference to affidavit of support i.e i-134 form?
Is the system applicable to Ghana?
2. It’s likely that my sponsor is going to delay in filling on my behalf the i-134 form. The question is can i submit my ds 260 online including the SCANNED SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS whilst i await the arrival of the affidavit of support?
3. Is it also possible for me to have a place of stay and mailing address indicated on the ds 260 being the relative i’ll be lodging with who is obviously different from my sponsor? Any consequences of this kind of arrangement?
4. Finally, on the issue of vaccination being “received in accordance with US law” , I’m yet to be scheduled for an interiew and I’ve not done that before should response ‘No” ?
Thank you very much.
May 15, 2016 at 14:45
1. Ghana mainly relies on the host system.
2. No supporting documents are required to submit the DS260.
3. No problem.
4. Correct – answer no.
May 15, 2016 at 18:32
how many times can one check with the conformation number if he/she is the winner?
May 15, 2016 at 21:17
No limit.
May 16, 2016 at 10:50
I’m a 2017 winner, and I submitted my DS-260 straight away. My case number is 20172QUPSB5XNOxx how good or bad is this number (will i be scheduled for an interview late this year or next year) if that something you can tell?
Thanks
May 16, 2016 at 14:43
That is not your case number – so I can’t tell anything – but read the link below and decide for yourself.
https://britsimonsays.com/dv2017-basic-questions/
May 18, 2016 at 15:13
So due computer crash I lost my confirmation number. I tried to use lost confirmation code link but it is not working. It always says my info is invalid. Now out of curiosity I tried to retrieve my previous year confirmation number (I have that info saved in my notebook) and I get the same exact error code. I tried contacting the customer service number but they always ignore my response and just copy and general answer into eMail that does not help me to retrieve my number. I am just screwed? Nothing I can do ? Anyone had this problem?
May 18, 2016 at 15:32
Use the lost confirmation number link on the ESC page.

Hello Mr. Simon, I hope all is well with you. Can please me with my questions! can I include my step daughter name on my DS 260 form? Where they children information, or only her mother can do that?
My second questions is, can she use my my name in her DS 260 form or her biological father name? Where they have mother and father informations. Because all her documents is carrying my name even birth certificate and password.
Thanks
May 19, 2016 at 13:34
Step children can be included – and use their accurate names and birth certs.
May 19, 2016 at 20:51
Hello Sir, my step daughter is using my last name on her birth certificate, because her name is also on all my insurance. Can she also use that same name on her DS 260?
May 19, 2016 at 22:13
If that is her legal name…
May 19, 2016 at 19:26
Hi Brit Simon,
Thank you very much for your help.
It’s a bit confusing here and I’m stacked. ON the DS 260 it’s asked to indicate the number of educational institutions attended.
1.Do I have to list all educational institutions attended since primary school to university level? Or should it just be after High school onwards?
2. I’ve indicated only two (2) thus high school and university and submitted.
If my question number 1 is true, is adequate to necessitate unlocking of case?
I’m always grateful.
May 19, 2016 at 19:38
You can list them all, but what you have done is possibly enough (unless you did not list a secondary school from around age 11 – in which case, unlock and list it.
May 21, 2016 at 13:03
Hello Brit Simon, I need your help please. I am checking my Entrance Status for 2017. I correctly filled the Confirmation Number then moved on to fill the Last/ Family Name and at this step is the problem. My name (exactly as written in the Submission Confirmation) is 34 characters (including the spaces), the problems is that the textbox in the website does not accept more that 33 characters and thus I am not able to type the last letter. I’ve neglected this issue by leaving my name without the last letter and completed the Year of Birth and the Authentication. Unfortunately, I keep receiving “The information entered is not valid.”. Can you please help in this issue.
May 21, 2016 at 13:28
Hello Brit Simon, Please disregard my previous question, I figured out the problem, I should only type the Last Name (without the First Name or the Middle Name). Now I have checked my status successfully. Best regards.
May 21, 2016 at 14:10
Are all the letters before the comma on the confirmation?
May 22, 2016 at 15:37
No, not all the letters are before the comma, and this is the mistake I did. The next time I typed only the letters before the comma and got it done.
May 22, 2016 at 15:41
🙂
May 22, 2016 at 17:56
HI BRIT, ITS BEEN SO GOOD KNOWING YOU. MY QUESTION TODAY IS I HAVE WON THE DV 2017 AND DURING THE ENTRY I WAS SINGLE AND I WANT TO GET MARRIED TO MY GIRLFRIEND AND TAKE HER ALONG. DO YOU THINK IT CAN AFFECT MY CHANCES OF GETTING THE VISA, IF NOT HOW WOULD YOU RECOMMEND WE GO ABOUT IT

I FORGOT TO ADD THAT I AM IN GHANA
May 29, 2016 at 09:53
@bosompemaduNCIS, do read the article on the link Brit has given you. Ensure you get all the things right. Don’t be tempted to forge or backdate ANYTHING as people might advise you to do. Be completely genuine in your application, follow the rules and you’ll be fine. Don’t forget to be praying as you prepare. I went through the same thing last year and by grace I was successful, from Ghana too. My wife and I were successful. All the best!
May 22, 2016 at 18:48
hey brit i won dv2017 and i have something to ask you
my neam is ermiyas mamo and i submitted the entry frmo (not DS260) through an agent and i have the printed page of my entry.
on the paper of entry form under the name section it has 2 lines inquiring my names both in english and my native, Amharic(im ethiopian)
the name i wrote on the printed form that was given to me by my agent was “ኤርምስ ማሞ” /english equivalent- ERMIAS MAMO/(the english version was correct)
but i made a mistake on my first name in Amharic
–>> WAS THE ENTRY NAME in AMHARIC SUBMITTED on the online edv entry form???????
thank you very much Mr. Simon!!!
May 22, 2016 at 19:04
The eDV takes the name in English.
May 23, 2016 at 18:08
simon you’re the man!!!! thanx so very much for the info
i just got one more question… i still have some problem in filling out the dS260
i entered my family name on the edv as “GEBRREMARIAM” and i have all my documents going by the same name… but there is a section on the DS requiring for my father’s name and address
now the thing is my father has been using that name as” GEBREMARIAM” ( only one R)
1.so what will the risk be when they do the background check??
2 what should i do if that will be a problem?????
thanks so much brother!!!!!!!! !!!!
May 23, 2016 at 18:10
Your DS260 should have the accurate name spelling – to match your passport/birth cert. It does not matter what your parents documents show.
May 23, 2016 at 19:34
i see, you just made my night Mr.Simon!!!!! thank you for everything you are doing to help us!!!!
May 23, 2016 at 19:47

Yes that is possible.
May 25, 2016 at 19:59

Hello Brit
I am dv2017 winner with case number 2017AF00005### I submitted my ds260 form on the 12may. I have realized that at under the education. I listed my high school before my university. Do I have to unlock to change or I should leave it like that if it is not a serious problem. Thank you
May 31, 2016 at 03:17
Not a serious problem.
June 5, 2016 at 11:44
Hi Simon,
regarding the supporting documents, do they need to be attested from my country’s foreign affairs or just the original copies?
June 5, 2016 at 14:50
That varies by country – follow any specific instructions from the embassy. Make sure you watch my video on how to prepare for the interview.
June 9, 2016 at 17:50
Dear Simon,
thank youfor your support
im dv 2017winner and im still on the ds form and got the following questions, i hope u would help me . thanx
1- the person who gave me his address(mailing address) told me that he intends to change his address in october/november(my case would probably be current at that tmie) so can i go o the interview with his new address if he would do so???
2-is there any responsibility on my sponsor concerning me after i get there( anything to be legaly responsible/abidement)
3- how many times can i unlock and change my sponsor for that matter????
THANK YOU Simon!!!!
June 9, 2016 at 18:25
1. Yes
2. No
3. 1053 times. Absolutely no more than that. 🙂
June 9, 2016 at 17:57
4- can a person who is in the US on a scholarship without holding a green card be my sponsor(im from Ethiopia and the embassy here doesnt ask for I-134, only his mailing address is required.)
June 9, 2016 at 18:26
It’s a slight risk (if they ask for an I-134, which has happened – even in Ethiopia).

Hi Simon,
I have never won the DV before even though I played once and neither of my children has won either, even though they do not miss a year without playing. As usual, I was checking the DV 2017 results of two of them when I stumbled on your helpful blog giving free assistance of guidance to both winners and those who have not yet won free of charge. I would like you to know that I am highly impressed with your generosity in providing free guidance/counseling to everyone who asked, including some from my country, Liberia. Thank you so much and may the Lord Jesus richly bless you and yours!

Hi there!
Just wanted to share my experience regarding the first FAQ question:
“Q. Will there be a second draw or why does it say you have not been selected at this time?”
You’re saying that “That happened last in 2013”. Well, this year has reset that counter – I checked the site yesterday and was shocked to find out that I’m a selectee for DV-2017, while I’m more than sure that I wasn’t one the last time I checked late in May.

I am from Nepal & i got my first letter in September. My case no is 81**, is there any chance of getting 2NL??
September 8, 2016 at 21:45
I can’t be sure whether you will get a chance or not, but I have to say, that is quite a high number for Nepal. That number wasn’t even issued last year and the final cutoff fell at 7100.
September 9, 2016 at 00:22
Has the cutoff gone above 8000 any year for Nepal??
September 9, 2016 at 03:32
You can only compare with the two most recent years – the numbers were significantly different in other years.

Is there any probablity that candidates having high case numbers reviewed earlier?
September 9, 2016 at 06:20
Not before their number is ready, no.

Hi i have also been selected for the second draw my case number is 26XXX, i’m very happy but this number is pretty big, do you think that i have any chance ? i am still filling the DS-260 form.
I need to colect some information so it takes time. Do i have to rush to send it ?
September 9, 2016 at 14:34
When you quote your number, add the year and region and take out the exact number – so you write 2017EU26XXX. I have edited your post for your privacy.
You are not the highest number in EU, so you have a chance.
You do not need to rush, your interview cannot be held until next summer.

While filling the first form I mistakenly wrote my birthplace wrong(but it’s in Nepal only) and now I have to fill DS-260 form. Will I get disqualified if I now write the my correct birthplace.

No. Make it accurate.
