We have many DV2018 selectees with very basic questions. Let me try and address the most frequent ones here in the hope that people will read this. If you ask a question and I give you a link to this page, it is to indicate that your question can be answered by reading this page and using some common sense. Please use the links in the title at the top of this page for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and the DV lottery guide. There is LOTS of information available on my site – so a look through the FAQ and guide will take care of most questions.
By the way. VERY IMPORTANT. You can ask questions on any blog post I write. If you have to ask me a series of questions – please NUMBER the questions to make my work easier.
First – two links to help those still not able to check their entry:
https://britsimonsays.com/faq/checking-esc-page-check-without-mistakes/
And for those that cannot submit their DS260
https://britsimonsays.com/faq/ds260-case-number-doesnt-match-case-number/
Is there a deadline to submit my DS260?
There is no official deadline to submit your DS260. People will continue to submit DS260s for DV2018 cases well into 2018. Submissions as late as April or perhaps even May of next year will still get processed in time.
How long does it take to process the DS260?
Based on the past years (since the DS260 was introduced), we can be pretty confident in the following info.
The actual processing time of the DS260 is quite short – probably 3 to 4 weeks. However, because of the volume of DS260s that are received starting at the beginning of May, a backlog builds up very quickly. You can think of this as a queue. In the two past years, that queue or backlog has meant that DS260s were taking 4 to 5 months to process (obviously most of that time being spent waiting). So – for those that submit their DS260 in the first week or two after the initial draw, the processing time will be quite short. Then a backlog will build and processing times will build up to 4 or 5 month delay. Then, early next year, processing times will reduce again to being a few weeks.
Does every DS260 take the same time to process?
No. There is some background checks required on each case that vary according to the situation of the selectees. The precise details of the checks are not published, but we can guess they are mainly about ensuring security of the USA. That means they communicate with agencies and foreign governments about the details you provide on the DS260. Some countries co-operate with the USA, some don’t. In countries that don’t co-operate you can expect DS260 will take longer. So, some cases are very simple, and some not so simple. If a selectee was raised in Western Europe, works in an office and has never travelled to certain high risk countries we can expect the DS260 processing (once the case is ACTUALLY processed, not queued) to be quick. If on the other hand someone has travel history around certain countries in the middle East or lists their work as “Nuclear weapons specialist”, well they can expect the US government to take longer over those checks.
So – never assume that all DS260s submitted on the same day will complete processing on the same day. There will be variations.
When will I be interviewed? Is my number safe?
OK, first of all. Processing timing is mainly based on your case number, and where that number is ranked within each region. So – if you are case number 2000 in OC region for example (where the highest case number will probably be around 24XX) you are near the back of the line and can expect a long wait before being interviewed. However, that same number in AF region (where the highest case number could be 50,000 to 60000) would be very low. So “low or high” is relative within the region.
As it is very early in the year, I don’t currently know the highest case numbers in each region. Based on numbers I have seen the highest number in each region are at least these
AF 60XXX
EU 40XXX
AS 13XXX
SA 25XX
OC 26XX
So -= there is no need to ask me if your number is low or high. Compare your number to the highest numbers here – and apply some logical thinking.
Cases are called for interview in case number order, so a low number means the case could be interviewed earlier in the process *IF* the DS260 is processed.
HOWEVER, if a selectee with a low case number submits their DS260 late, it is possible their case will not be scheduled until a later month than their case number would suggest. No case will be scheduled unless the DS260 has been processed. In the case of someone with a low number who missed their “current” month because of DS260 backlogs, their case will be scheduled once the DS260 is processed. In some cases people might actually want to use this delay to cause a later interview (for instance if someone wants to get married prior to interview).
UPDATE: After this article was first published the government published data on how many selectees there are across regions. That allowed me to do some analysis, and I published some thoughts (INCLUDING NUMBERS THAT ARE VERY SAFE!) here: DV2018 Selectee Numbers
When will interviews start and how will I be told of my interview date?
No DV2018 interviews will happen before October 2017. DV2018 interviews will continue until September 30th 2018. So stop packing your bags. It’s a long process. Interview scheduled are notified in month batches about 6 weeks before the interview month. The notification is called the 2NL.
When will KCC send the first 2NLs?
The first 2NLs (the interview notification) for DV2018 will go out in late August. That will be for cases that have been processed AND are current for October. Then 2NLs will come in a monthly schedule, also late in each month. So – late in September for November interviews and so on.
When are the visa bulletins published?
The visa bulletins are published around the 8th to the 15th of each month. If you call KCC they will always respond that it is released on the 15th. They are not “late” until the 16th. Usually I get people lamenting “the sky is falling” and “why are they so late” around the 10th or 11th. That will happen every month – and no matter how many times I explain, people are impatient.
How do KCC schedule the cases?
Roughly speaking all interviews are spread out over the year, starting in October and ending the following September. KCC release numbers via the visa bulletin to say which case numbers can be interviewed. Check out this article to understand how to read the visa bulletin.
KCC will increase the number made current on each region at a pace that ensures they have enough interviews to match the embassy capacity during each month.
So – to take an example. If OC had a highest case number of 1000, we could roughly expect to see that number increase by 100 each month. However, due to DS260 backlogs (remember no case can be scheduled UNTIL the DS260 is processed), KCC might release a higher number to start with (for October and November for instance) and slow down later. So – we might see OC start at 200 in October, be 350 in November and then increase by 50 to 75 each month for a while.
The same thing will happen in each region. This effect is going to be particularly pronounced in AF region where selectees typically take a long time to submit their forms. So – AF will start with a high VB number. Many will rejoice and say how fast things are moving and then those same people will be confused when the pace decreases later on. I have tried to explain this many times, but people just don’t seem to understand the point. It ends up being mysterious and frustrating. So – people need to be ready to be patient.
You can look at the historical visa bulletin numbers from previous years to get an idea how things work. However, every year is different, so I would suggest only taking a look at DV2016 or DV2015 to try and anticipate when your number will be scheduled for interview. Please do that rather than asking me to predict your interview date. Use some judgment and common sense to allow me to spend my time on people that need help with more critical questions.
To encourage people to look for themselves I have taken the 2015 and 2016 numbers and plotted them onto charts. So – look for your number in your region and you can guess roughly when your case will be ready for interview.

How longer should i wait for a response since they have never replied to me since i submitted my DS form last year around July? Thanks
February 15, 2018 at 20:14
Did you read the article above?
If so – you should understand the importance of your case number. So – what is it?
February 15, 2018 at 20:22
Yes i have read the artical but it has been more than 6 months now heading to 7..my case No. Is 2018AF37…
February 15, 2018 at 21:22
OK – so your question is a waste of my time because you can understand why you are waiting yourself from reading the article.
February 15, 2018 at 21:15
Hello Sir Please answer me frankly, I have a mistake in ds260 and he is the person who helped me in the ds 260 and did not give his name and address even though the date of the interview is close.

Does it affect the day of the interview
February 16, 2018 at 15:08
No
February 17, 2018 at 08:39
Hello dear Simo,
Is that mandatory more than 5 subjects pas (50+1) in G12 certificate for Dv interview ?
February 17, 2018 at 14:37
I don’t know what country you are from and I don’t know the education system. So – how could I possibly answer. Check the embassy website for education requirements.
February 17, 2018 at 10:44
hi brit!
wish u doing great! bro I’ve been living in the US on f1 visa with white records and I left with no violations, I’ve been applying for dv years ago, this year I got it, my CN is current on April, so I’m waiting for 2nl to receive it as I understood from your articles that 2nl usually issue after 22th of each month..and I’ve participated in solving catcha in order to get more precise picture about my situation, therefore I’d like to know if there is quota for each country dv winner, for example my CN is AS5000 this CN for whole Asia, but more specifically for my country in citizenship (Jordan) or my country by birth (Saudi Arabia) so can I know if my CN more precisely is within the divided quota for each country in Asia?
if you have talked about this then please refer me to that page and pardon me for disturbing you.
thanks
February 17, 2018 at 14:32
Countries do not get a quota, so your number is within Asia as a whole.
February 17, 2018 at 20:48

February 20, 2018 at 16:47
I already answered. Don’t waste my time.
February 21, 2018 at 08:30
Hi Brit!
I’d ask if I sent request to KCC to ask about my ds260 if is been processed or not,do you think they respond ? I know it will not make any difference but I’m curious to know because my CN is current in April.
thanks
February 21, 2018 at 15:08
Don’t waste their time – they are doing important work.
February 21, 2018 at 15:59
May God bless them and their work, well I’d ask about releasing or sending 2nl, isn’t supposed to be in second part of each month?
February 21, 2018 at 16:04
Yes
February 22, 2018 at 14:40
Hi Simon,
A friend of mine, who is a Dv 2018 winner, is expecting to have her interview in Egypt some time around July 2018, however, about one month ago, she moved with her family to some other country, with the intention to return to Egypt for the interview. She has already submitted her DS 260, and we would like to know if it is necessary for her to unlock it to make the changes related to her current address and travel history.
Appreciate your help!
Rami
February 22, 2018 at 14:51
If she changes her address, they will change the embassy. So – if she doesn’t want that she should not update the address.
February 24, 2018 at 19:21
Hi Brit!
Now when I checked my ds260, they said (kcc) that my application it’s already submitted to the US embassy in my interview country, is this mean good sign that my ds260 has been processed and in the next stage which is sending me 2nl? Because my cn is current
thanks
February 24, 2018 at 20:53
Obviously, yes.
February 26, 2018 at 15:34
Hi Simon ls there the possibility of the 2nd release within toady? Thanks
February 26, 2018 at 16:04
Of course.
February 27, 2018 at 23:22

February 27, 2018 at 23:28
They are not going to ask about your education doc – ONLY your wife.
February 28, 2018 at 16:10
Hello Britt Simon. Thanks for all the help wanted to know that does the embassy reschedule time for interview. Because I had a call from them saying they have change my schedule from 10:30 to 7:30
February 28, 2018 at 16:33
You got a call from the embassy to reschedule the interview, but you are asking me if the embassy does that. Surely you can answer that question!
February 28, 2018 at 16:27
Is something wrong with my case that is why they ask me to come earlier
February 28, 2018 at 16:40
For goodness sake! Relax.
February 28, 2018 at 21:04
Hi Brit!
I’m a little bit worried because my CN is 2018AS5000 which is supposed to be current in April, but so far not received 2nl, while my ds260 is being processed and sent to the US embassy in the interview country, is this normal?
February 28, 2018 at 21:08
Note: my country is not one of those countries (Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq,Libya, Nipal, etc) or one of those countries which have cut off.

March 3, 2018 at 02:23
Hi, me again!
My step son’s mom has booked a cruise for around the time our interview might land (we still don’t have our date yet as the interview was mistakenly booked at the wrong consulate… long story but the case is being transferred to Sydney). She said she will NOT change their dates for us if we needed. I did indicate on the DS260 that my step son would not be accompanying us to the US. He doesn’t live with us in the US at the moment.
Would it be possible to get the DVs issued without him present??
March 3, 2018 at 02:32
Yours, yes – his no. But then it doesn’t sound like you would get a document showing full custody – and you would need that for the son to emigrate.
March 3, 2018 at 03:40
We don’t need him to emigrate with us. He visits us a couple of times a year in the US.
So can we process mine, my husbands and our children’s visas and just not his visa?
March 3, 2018 at 07:16
Yes
March 4, 2018 at 04:49
Please how are you Mr.Brit,Please I want the site where I can be checking for my appointment letter or interview date

Thanks Mr.Brit
March 6, 2018 at 06:35
Hello Brit.I went for my interview yesterday.but was refused a visa. Thanks for all your advice given. But I have aquestion still. When I reached the window to have my interview I saw only my high school diploma certificate inside my passport.I was told I have failed in one subject on my certificate meanwhile at the back of the certificate, the interpretation of the grades are there. The subject they said is a fail is at the back of the certificate as PASS.I even gained admission to tertiary education into NURSING TRAINING COLLEGE with that same certificate which I’m in my final semester.immediately I was told its a fail, I said no its not and defended that I would not be admitted into tertiary education to offer that nursing program if it was a fail in our country and told him I have a transcript, my I’d card, admission letter, and student clinical record book as evidence.I even put the transcript on the documents when I was asked to submit my doocuments. He refused to look at all the proof.I feel cheated. What should I do? Should I scan the certificate front and back (the interpretation of the results)and my proof of been in the nursing training and the transcript to the Kentucky consula or what.I want to enter into US with this opportunity. Please Brit help me.I even borrowed for the interview. Now I’m in danger. My big problem is if I have not gained admission into any tertiary education, that wouldn’t be a problem. But now I’m above that certificate. I need help my big brother Brit.
March 6, 2018 at 06:50
There is a standard of education required that could be higher than what is considered a pass for tertiary education. So – it sounds like they applied their standard – and on that basis you are not qualified for the DV visa. There is no appeal process, there is nothing more you can do.
March 6, 2018 at 06:57
This link below shows how the US embassy consider the grades. It is clear that D7 and E8 are passes – but not considered high enough for US tertiary education entry. So – if you have those grades, you were correctly refused.

March 6, 2018 at 08:41
Mr. Britsimon, so even if u had d7 in an elective and have completed university and attained a diploma will it still get you denied
March 6, 2018 at 14:39
In Accra it is possible – yes.
March 7, 2018 at 03:11
That means two years training schools n working experience are not being recognized other thane sscE and wasce results
March 7, 2018 at 03:29
No – it does not mean that.
March 6, 2018 at 07:32
Infact your site is very reliable
March 7, 2018 at 00:11
Hello Brit, thanks for everything. Please a friend has also been refused last week for having E8 on his certificate. He says he has written Exam to correct it to C6.But he said because he used that certificate alone bearing that E8 in filling the form, and as a result of pressure on him, he couldn’t tell them he has written an exam to correct it to C6 on another certificate which he was not having it with him at the time of the interview.it was after three days that he realised it was a mistake for not defending that he has written to correct it.when I asked him, why he didn’t go with it at the time of the interview, he also said the certificate he used to fill the form were all passes and when he was asked of the number of institutions attended on the form, he replied as 1.so he didn’t want to put anything in his envelope to increase his failure at the interview.1.He said I should ask if he can still do something to get his visa and if yes what should he do? 2.Another friend is also asking if you can change the address of where your permanent resident card(greencard) will be mailed after you have been granted a visa?
March 7, 2018 at 00:18
1. Nothing to be done. Refusals are final.
2. You can change the address at the arrival airport.
March 7, 2018 at 16:58
Please, I have got my appointment for interview. what should my sponsor do now? should he communicate with the embassy in Accra or send me a filled affidavit of support?
Thanks Mr Brits
March 7, 2018 at 17:07
No. In Accra they will ask you about your relationship with the host.
March 7, 2018 at 17:13
Hello Mr Britsimons,
Can i just take my university certificate without the transcript to my interview because i just found out that the date of birth on the transcript of university attended is wrong. would this cause problems?
March 7, 2018 at 20:01

I hear so many people asking “my friend has this question” and “my friend has another question” that I am honestly wondering if all these people asking these questions arent actually the agents themself wanting to know the smartest next step. At some point, how many friends can a single person have that won the lottery and why are they not asking themselfs?
March 7, 2018 at 23:24
Interesting view ?. Really!?
March 7, 2018 at 23:35
is it so strange? how many people do you personally know which have won this year? or any year for that matter even?
March 7, 2018 at 23:54
I know some, but i dont have or care to much for problems they had in their way to green card. None of them asks me to write in this blog! You just gave us a really interesting thought. I just wandered why a single person asks so much and numerous of questions but i never had your thought… , very smart.
March 10, 2018 at 14:13
99% probably are both cases – agents and people to embarassed to ask question as themselves. I would compare this to the situation, where my firend knows man whose friend wants to know the name of the xxx movie actress 🙂 To embarassing to ask question straight by myself and for myself:) So everyone starts to have a lot of “friends”. To be honest if you have “friends” that have chance but are to lazy to move things by themselves – don’t be their pushover. If i had friend with such problems asking for help i would give them adress of this or other site – they would gladly use it. Agents, liars or pushovers 🙂
Greetings 🙂
March 8, 2018 at 00:47
Or maybe they are asking for themselves, but are not telling the truth and they know that Brit will know so they are embarrassed ?
March 8, 2018 at 09:58
but they come with diffrent issues. One friend is married but had a divorce, and the other friend just got married and needs to do something else. The other friend has been refused for this and that reason. I’m not sure, its an internet forum. I hate to say it because recently we have learned how ugly people can behave on social media when they feeld protected by anonymity but, if you post here saying “I”, it really doesnt harm you too much. It’s just my guess, but agents also need to get their information from somewhere… if they entered people without there knowledge, no wonder that so many questions are like “my firend won the lottery as single, but actually he is married and has a son. what can he do?”
March 8, 2018 at 15:09
Just for the record. I am well aware that some “agents” ask questions here. Also some people use the “my friend” approach when they are in fact just embarrassed to be lying, or want to make the questions more or less personal to influence me to answer. Most of that is very transparent to me.

Hi Brit!
I was born, raised, studied and worked in Saudi Arabia since my family living there but I’m not citizen of Saudi Arabia because they don’t grant citizenship even for baby born on their lands, anyhow I moved back to my home country Jordan at 2013, so I can’t issue police certificate records from Saudi Arabia since I’m not living there anymore and I cancelled my residency there, so I can issue police records certificate from my country Jordan only, and my interview will be in my country Jordan, do you think this gonna affect my situation? And i have birth certificate from my country jordan only.
Note: all other documents are ready (university certificate and transcript, birth certificate. .ect)
March 8, 2018 at 03:32
What does the reciprocity page say for non residents of SA?
March 8, 2018 at 03:51
Brit, they saying “Exceptions: Police clearances are unavailable for third country nationals who no longer reside in the Kingdom”
So it is not necessary, right?
March 8, 2018 at 04:05
If you are Jordanian – yes – but not if you are considered Saudi.
March 8, 2018 at 05:57
Hi Brit, a friend is saying that he had E on his certificate around 2005/2006.But at that time that grade was accepted so he was admitted into teacher training college. After he has completed teacher training college he also further his education at the university and have obtained a bachelor’s degree. Now he has taught for about eight years. He is still a teacher. He is asking if the E on his SSCE will affect him from not getting US VISA if he is selected since he has acquired teacher education diploma and a university degree.
March 8, 2018 at 06:02
Some embassies or CO will refuse such a case. Some might see the degree as sufficient.
March 8, 2018 at 08:06
Hi Mr. BritSimon , DV 2018 winners of the Travel ban countries are being given letter of refusal of Visa saying that the Presidential Proclamation affects you and no Waiver is not granted , so is there any chance for those people if the travel ban is lifted later or they lose their chance for getting Visa , Please clarify ?
March 8, 2018 at 15:00
Theoretically those people would be able to get their visas if the ban were to be lifted before September 30. However, in practice, that might be impossible because of the logistics. It depends on when or if the ban is lifted.
March 8, 2018 at 13:07
Dear brits,
I and my husband, had interview on March 1, 2018. We are congratulated to receive the visa. The co. gave us yellow and white paper to receive the visa from the selected DHL office. Till March 4 the online status of our case was ready. On March 5 it changed to Administration Processing. Till today it is the same. Is it normal? Shall we go to the DHL office in person or shall we wait?
March 8, 2018 at 15:21
Wait a couple more days to see if the status changes.

It’s the 2NL. Follow the instructions.
March 15, 2018 at 22:03
Hi Brit,
I read over your article and historical visa bulletin numbers, I think my number is a little bit high – AISA 13XXX, and would like to hear about some of your suggestions.
I am considering wait for the visa bulletin in US to change the status, or submit DS260 now to go abroad for a visa interview, since I plan to submit no later than May to prevent backlog. additionally, how long does it usually take for me to have an interview in asia after submitted the DS260.
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Blair
March 15, 2018 at 22:34
Yes your number is high. I a normal year you would not have a chance. This year, because of the travel ban, you might have a chance. I can’t be sure – so you need to decide for yourself how to handle your case.
March 17, 2018 at 13:57
mr Brisimon , I hope You to answer for me
May 2018 immigrant interview is right know scheduled or not?
March 17, 2018 at 14:26
Some interviews are scheduled – yes.
March 17, 2018 at 14:42
After filling ds 260 form it is sure that they will receive 2nl
And why this time 2nl is not sending together
March 17, 2018 at 14:57
If you become current and have submitted your DS260 in time – you get a 2NL.
March 17, 2018 at 15:02
Yes i m current but i not yet received 2nl till what date we ill get 2nl
March 17, 2018 at 23:35

Hlo britsimon,
Im EDV winner 2018 from Nepal, my interview held on march 6, but my visa is refushed undersection 212(a)4 public charge.counslor told me that “we are unable to issue visa in this time pls collect the supporting document in your sponsor how to proof it ” and gave me refusal work sheet, so i collect the document in my sponsor but his income is not sufficient,
1. Can i join the co- sponser?
2. and how can I get visa ?
At last how is possible to get visa in this situation ? pls sir reply me. Thank you!
March 18, 2018 at 15:29
1. No
2. I’m not sure the embassy will reconsider the decision. But if they do – you should supply an I-134. Read the article below.
https://britsimonsays.com/all-about-public-charge-affidavit-of-support-i-134/
By the way – Nepal normally just want a welcome letter – it is unusual they expected more.
March 18, 2018 at 18:57
If I cannot found financial supporter , and I can show my personal account balence ? how much ?
March 18, 2018 at 22:47
Given that you are trying to rescue a case I would suggest an I-134 or give up.
March 19, 2018 at 13:35
BritSimon
I hope mr BritSimon, can you specified for May immigrant 2018 interview schedule number ? my case number is 203303 , but right Know I can not receive appointment letter?
