We have many DV2018 selectees with very basic questions. Let me try and address the most frequent ones here in the hope that people will read this. If you ask a question and I give you a link to this page, it is to indicate that your question can be answered by reading this page and using some common sense. Please use the links in the title at the top of this page for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and the DV lottery guide. There is LOTS of information available on my site – so a look through the FAQ and guide will take care of most questions.
By the way. VERY IMPORTANT. You can ask questions on any blog post I write. If you have to ask me a series of questions – please NUMBER the questions to make my work easier.
First – two links to help those still not able to check their entry:
https://britsimonsays.com/faq/checking-esc-page-check-without-mistakes/
And for those that cannot submit their DS260
https://britsimonsays.com/faq/ds260-case-number-doesnt-match-case-number/
Is there a deadline to submit my DS260?
There is no official deadline to submit your DS260. People will continue to submit DS260s for DV2018 cases well into 2018. Submissions as late as April or perhaps even May of next year will still get processed in time.
How long does it take to process the DS260?
Based on the past years (since the DS260 was introduced), we can be pretty confident in the following info.
The actual processing time of the DS260 is quite short β probably 3 to 4 weeks. However, because of the volume of DS260s that are received starting at the beginning of May, a backlog builds up very quickly. You can think of this as a queue. In the two past years, that queue or backlog has meant that DS260s were taking 4 to 5 months to process (obviously most of that time being spent waiting). So β for those that submit their DS260 in the first week or two after the initial draw, the processing time will be quite short. Then a backlog will build and processing times will build up to 4 or 5 month delay. Then, early next year, processing times will reduce again to being a few weeks.
Does every DS260 take the same time to process?
No. There is some background checks required on each case that vary according to the situation of the selectees. The precise details of the checks are not published, but we can guess they are mainly about ensuring security of the USA. That means they communicate with agencies and foreign governments about the details you provide on the DS260. Some countries co-operate with the USA, some donβt. In countries that donβt co-operate you can expect DS260 will take longer. Β So, some cases are very simple, and some not so simple. If a selectee was raised in Western Europe, works in an office and has never travelled to certain high risk countries we can expect the DS260 processing (once the case is ACTUALLY processed, not queued) to be quick. Β If on the other hand someone has travel history around certain countries in the middle East or lists their work as βNuclear weapons specialistβ, well they can expect the US government to take longer over those checks.
So β never assume that all DS260s submitted on the same day will complete processing on the same day. There will be variations.
When will I be interviewed? Is my number safe?
OK, first of all. Processing timing is mainly based on your case number, and where that number is ranked within each region. So β if you are case number 2000 in OC region for example (where the highest case number will probably be around 24XX) you are near the back of the line and can expect a long wait before being interviewed. However, that same number in AF region (where the highest case number could be 50,000 to 60000) would be very low. So “low or high” is relative within the region.
As it is very early in the year, I don’t currently know the highest case numbers in each region. Based on numbers I have seen the highest number in each region are at least these
AF 60XXX
EU 40XXX
AS 13XXX
SA 25XX
OC 26XX
So -= there is no need to ask me if your number is low or high. Compare your number to the highest numbers here – and apply some logical thinking.
Cases are called for interview in case number order, so a low number means the case could be interviewed earlier in the process *IF* the DS260 is processed.
HOWEVER, if a selectee with a low case number submits their DS260 late, it is possible their case will not be scheduled until a later month than their case number would suggest. No case will be scheduled unless the DS260 has been processed. In the case of someone with a low number who missed their βcurrentβ month because of DS260 backlogs, their case will be scheduled once the DS260 is processed. In some cases people might actually want to use this delay to cause a later interview (for instance if someone wants to get married prior to interview).
UPDATE: After this article was first published the government published data on how many selectees there are across regions. That allowed me to do some analysis, and I published some thoughts (INCLUDING NUMBERS THAT ARE VERY SAFE!) here: DV2018 Selectee Numbers
When will interviews start and how will I be told of my interview date?
No DV2018 interviews will happen before October 2017. DV2018 interviews will continue until September 30th 2018. So stop packing your bags. It’s a long process. Interview scheduled are notified in month batches about 6 weeks before the interview month. The notification is called the 2NL.
When will KCC send the first 2NLs?
The first 2NLs (the interview notification) for DV2018 will go out in late August. That will be for cases that have been processed AND are current for October. Then 2NLs will come in a monthly schedule, alsoΒ late in each month. So – late in September for November interviews and so on.
When are the visa bulletins published?Β
The visa bulletins are published around the 8th to the 15th of each month. If you call KCC they will always respond that it is released on the 15th. They are not “late” until the 16th. Usually I get people lamenting “the sky is falling” and “why are they so late” around the 10th or 11th. That will happen every month – and no matter how many times I explain, people are impatient.
How do KCC schedule the cases?
Roughly speaking all interviews are spread out over the year, starting in October and ending the following September. KCC release numbers via the visa bulletin to say which case numbers can be interviewed. Check out this article to understand how to read the visa bulletin.
KCC will increase the number made current on each region at a pace that ensures they have enough interviews to match the embassy capacity during each month.
So β to take an example. If OC had a highest case number of 1000, we could roughly expect to see that number increase by 100 each month. However, due to DS260 backlogs (remember no case can be scheduled UNTIL the DS260 is processed), KCC might release a higher number to start with (for October and November for instance) and slow down later. So β we might see OC start at 200 in October, be 350 in November and then increase by 50 to 75 each month for a while.
The same thing will happen in each region. This effect is going to be particularly pronounced in AF region where selectees typically take a long time to submit their forms. So β AF will start with a high VB number. Many will rejoice and say how fast things are moving and then those same people will be confused when the pace decreases later on. I have tried to explain this many times, but people just donβt seem to understand the point. It ends up being mysterious and frustrating. So β people need to be ready to be patient.
You can look at the historical visa bulletin numbers from previous years to get an idea how things work. However, every year is different, so I would suggest only taking a look at DV2016 or DV2015 to try and anticipate when your number will be scheduled for interview. Please do that rather than asking me to predict your interview date. Use some judgment and common sense to allow me to spend my time on people that need help with more critical questions.
To encourage people to look for themselves I have taken the 2015 and 2016 numbers and plotted them onto charts. So β look for your number in your regionΒ and you can guess roughly when your case will be ready for interview.

I have 2 questions regarding the translation requirements.
Since my father was born in Spain, but is living Brazil, some of his documents are in Spanish and others in Portuguese. His interview will happen in Brazil.
(i) The documents in Spanish should be translated to Portuguese or English?
(ii) The documents in Portuguese should be translated to English?
Tks.
June 2, 2017 at 02:49
i) English would be more sensible (more useful for the future).
ii) THey don’t need to be translated.

Hello,
Thank you for all your help. I do have a question myself.
1. I have just contacted a medical exam office and they said I will need to bring my permanent US address for them, when I’m scheduled for my check-up. These questions keep popping up here and in DS-260 form, but how can I tell them this, when I don’t know if I’m gonna get my Green Card? I can’t rent anywhere until I have been granted the Green Card, but they keep asking this. I understood if they asked this in the customs, but not now. This seems like a circular reference… I did enter “UNKNOWN FOR NOW” in my ds-260 form, but I can’t tell this to the medical practitioner once I got there. Could you elaborate on this, please?
Thanks,
Arnold.
June 2, 2017 at 23:53
You have to give an address. You can change the address later (in the interview or at the POE – arrival airport). So – just give an address!
June 4, 2017 at 06:56
Hi britsimon I have a problem, is there not a way to retrieve your case number if we forgot his confirmation number and we no longer have the email used at registration
Thank you for answering me
June 4, 2017 at 12:56
No. You only need to know the email used, you are not sent an email.
June 3, 2017 at 12:17

2. my edv lottery is single but I mention my marrise duc for 2nL does it creat any problem?
June 3, 2017 at 14:15
1. Early, yes.
2. If you are married already that is fine.
June 4, 2017 at 04:02
sir 1 more que: recently I we got a baby. my baby became only 25 days n I haven’t includ her birth certificate in ds 260 what shulf I do?
June 4, 2017 at 04:45
You MUST unlock your DS260, add the child to the DS260 of both parents and create a DS260 for the baby.
June 4, 2017 at 04:57
Dear Brit I thought you wrote this!!
“So β to take an example. If OC had a highest case number of 1000, we could roughly expect to see that number increase by 100 each month. Based on your previous “short” answer it seem doesn’t match with “the inverted says” huh!
June 4, 2017 at 05:42
There is nothing that doesn’t match between my statements.
June 4, 2017 at 05:05

June 6, 2017 at 12:42

June 6, 2017 at 14:03
I did read it. There isn’t a problem. I assume you have unlocked to add your spouse and then your child. Have you done that? If so – no problem.

June 4, 2017 at 03:22
Hi Brit!
First of all I’d thank you for helping ppl in ur very helpful answers! second, I’ve a question, I’ve been to the US many times to study English, I got first F-1 visa in 2010 then I completed my course then I went back to my home country..the second F-1 visa was in 2014 and I completed my course and I went back home, so I entered many times to the US legally and left legally without any concerns..while my last F-1 visa multi-entries & my I-20 is still valid, now my inquiry is: since my CN is 2018AS51XX and I,ve submitted my DS-260 as early on May, do you think my DS-260 will processed faster due to my recorded security history in the US?
Thanks.
June 4, 2017 at 04:43
No. It won’t be faster, and in any case you will wait until your case number is current.
June 4, 2017 at 06:31
Hi Britt,
Am one of the DV2018 selectee whose case number is AF00016XXX, I submitted my DS 260 seven days after the selection date. My problem is that I discovered that my birth certificate hold a different spelling of my mothers surname than the one of her passport.
in her passport its written as Seliman while in my birth certificate its Sulieman (Different of u and e ).
My question is shall I submit a court letter saying that Sulieman and Selieman are the same person or shall I unlock my DS260 and change the name.
My worry in changing the name is that my mother is a frequent traveler and she can come over to the USA as often as every year,. so having her stating that she is my mother with a different name might disqualify for her future US entries.
Appreciate your input.
June 4, 2017 at 12:54
Her name being incorrect isn’t a big problem. Leave it as it is spelt in her passport.
June 4, 2017 at 21:55
Hi Brit,
Thanks for your wonderful support to DV2018 winners. My sister got selected on DV2018 with a case number 2018AF00007xxx. During the original DV entry, she wrote that she has University degree as highest certificate achieved as of today. She misunderstood the question as “What is they highest certificate that you are currently studying/preparing”. She already completed 12 years high school and she is currently a college student studying four years degree Nursing program. She is in her first year at the college. When filling the DS260, if she mentions that the highest certificate that she has is 12 years high school certificate which she has, will that create problem since she mentioned in the original DV lottery that she had University degree?
June 4, 2017 at 23:28
No it won’t create a problem. She must be truthful on the DS260
June 5, 2017 at 00:22
Thank you Brit.
June 5, 2017 at 10:35
hi Brit
i have a case number 2018AF51XXX which i think is very high according to your explainations on your blog .Completed ds260 form already
Any possibility that such a number is interviewed .since the graph shows that Af zone ends in September
thanks
June 5, 2017 at 13:27
Wait and see.
June 5, 2017 at 14:38
Hi Brit,
First of all thank you so much for the information that you share.
I would like to ask you 2 questions. My wife won the lottery and she is an European citizenship.
1- What is the approximate/minimum bank balance that we need to provide before having an interview? does property is efficient besides of bank balance?
2- Do we need to find a friend who is living in U.S to sign the form “i-134” which is affidavit of support?
Thank you!

June 5, 2017 at 15:21
Dear Brit, once I get scheduled for an interview after my DS-260 was processed, is that mean I get passed 90% of my journey toward gaining the green card? or still high risk passing the interview at the embassy? thanks
June 5, 2017 at 18:35
If you meet the requirements and have been honest all the way through, denial is rare.
June 5, 2017 at 20:15

June 6, 2017 at 20:27
Hello, Brit. I have a question, I would like to know if I should mention the consul during the interview, or only if he asks me. My birth certificate says July, but for a later error my identity card has June. And in all my records I always use June as a month of birth. In my DS260 I put JUNE. Will I have a problem because my birth certificate says JULIO? Thank you very much friend.
June 7, 2017 at 00:18
Yes it could cause a problem. Your DS260 should match your passport – and that should match your birth cert.
June 7, 2017 at 17:44
Thanks for answering. But the mistake was when they generated my ID (they switched from juLy to juNe). And I filled the DS with June, as it is in my ID and in my passport. Do you think it’s an impediment? This was not my mistake and I am being transparent about it. Thank you.
June 8, 2017 at 04:02
If your ID is wrong you should correct that!!
June 8, 2017 at 20:17
Please, the last question. If I ask to unlock my DS to correct the date, will this in any way affect the date the KCC will call me for the interview? (Case: SA7XX). Thank you very much
June 7, 2017 at 06:42
Hi Britt,
How many times we can unlock our DS260 ?
June 7, 2017 at 13:49
As many times as needed.
June 7, 2017 at 08:04
hello Simon
I filled my ds 260 yesterday and submitted and I got the page with the bars (confirmation letter) and I printed it as well as the form but I also clicked on the send confirmation by email and I added another email plus my old already written in the form and I didn’t get the email .. am sure its the right email. And its open 24/7 and I frequently get new emails in it ..im just concerned ab9out why they didn’t send me the confirmation email ?? and do I need to do anything !
June 7, 2017 at 13:47
No need to do anything, if the DS260 says completed, it’s submitted.
June 7, 2017 at 15:56
Ok but In the passport ID I wrote p letter followed by zero instead of ‘ O’
And in the question about are you a foreign medical graduate but haven’t got you board licence I mistakenly answered no , putting in mind I’m a doctor graduated from a foreign university studying for the boards do I need to unlock my form for these reasons ?
June 8, 2017 at 03:57
Yes, unlock (because the passport number is wrong)

Kimi,
Hi brit
I looked up on qualifications for United Kingdom and I found GCSE for Ireland but does not mention England it might be different . My certification of higher education from Kingston university is higher than A level and my Access course Is As and A level in Math and computer programming. I am guessing my qualifications will be ok
October 13, 2017 at 14:47
HI Brit,
Iβm running out of pages for my passport…only 2 empty pages do yo think I should get another passport and update
Pls advise
October 13, 2017 at 15:56
Up to you. The DV only needs one empty page.
June 7, 2017 at 20:49
Hi Simon, I have been selected 2018 DVD lottery. I would like to know if my qualifications are ok for interview. I have completed certification of higher education in Aircraft engineering which is equivalent to foundation degree and I also have access course to Math and computing. Do you think it’s enough?

June 8, 2017 at 04:09
I don’t know. The non vocational general studies is what is important, and the precise requirements depend on your country (and I don’t track all 190 countries)
June 8, 2017 at 14:45
Hello Brit,
The DS260 says “Before we can process your DV app, each applicant in your case must complete Form DS-260”
and you mentioned… under married and no contact with spouse…
“If you win, you simply donβt submit an application (DS260) for your spouse”.
I am not in contact with my spouse… will my submitted DS260 be processed based on my DS260 only?
Thanks,
Donna
June 8, 2017 at 20:47
Yes
June 9, 2017 at 00:47
What does KCC. means by your case is processed?
thanks
June 9, 2017 at 01:31
“Processing” means background checks.
June 9, 2017 at 04:19
Hi Brit, am Valencia AF. I submitted the ds-260 form without a passport since my passport will be issue to me in 3 months time. On that space, I instead put but “other” so I don’t know if that will cause a problem to me or should I unlock and wait till the passport is on my hand?. Thank you.
June 9, 2017 at 05:23
That’s no problem. Update the form once you get the passport.
June 9, 2017 at 11:05
Thanks alot
June 9, 2017 at 09:24

June 9, 2017 at 14:40
Brit I m Af49 is there a possibility I’m not going to get an interview .?
June 10, 2017 at 14:55
A possibility, yes. But you have a chance.

June 9, 2017 at 15:52
Hi Britt
I submitted my da260 a while ago and now I discovered a small issue that need some modification so I asked for unlocking my form
As I didn’t receive any email back , I decided to check on my form daily to see if it’s been unlocked . However I have noticed that there a new thing called omb control number and an expiration day.
1. What is this right digit control number
2. Does it represent anything
3 does it mean that my case has been processed knowing that I am a dc 2018 enerant and I submitted my da260 early may (after one week of lottiry results)
4. What is this export date that I have seen
5 or is it just a number that is generated as soon as I started my application and I haven’t noticed it
Appreciate ur answer

You can safely ignore the OMB number. It was always there and is nothing to do with your case.

Hi Brit, when I have completed the form ds260 on the form of the husband who is a beneficiary I mistakenly named the name of the faculty I have listed correctly in the university. I have thus marked the Faculty of AGROECONOMY but he has ECONOMY and AGROBIZNES. Do you think I can Penalties from this?
June 10, 2017 at 14:46
No

Hi Brit,
my spouse has won dv2018, her CN is 2018AF11xxx and submitted ds260 form in May.
my questions are:
1. is this CN fair and when do you guess we will be called for interview?
2. we get married in April before her selection to Dv while on original dv application she mentioned that she is single but the status is changed and mentioned the same on ds form. does this affects our success?
3. date of expiry of my passport is 26 August 2018. do I need to renew it or keep it for interview as it is?
4. do all our academic documents (degree tempos and transcripts) need to be authorized/authenticated?
I appreciate your commitments for help.
June 10, 2017 at 14:27
1. Read the article.
2. No
3. It is probably too early to renew it. You can do that later and use both passports at the interview.
4. That depends on instructions in your country – read the instructions.

Hi Simon,
What is the highest case number from Africa region you have heard of for 2018, and what is the highest case number that got through from previous years? My case number is 45837 and I know there is a slight risk.
June 11, 2017 at 15:41
Yours is fine.

hi brit , i had made mistake in mailling adress in dv lottery entry time as i had written my temporary adress instead of permanent adress in adress line 1.will it be problem in interview time or it is okay
June 11, 2017 at 15:13
You enter the history of addresses in the form, so I don’t understand why you are concerned.
June 11, 2017 at 09:53
hi brit adress line 1 should be permanent adress or temporary adress also be written in ds5501 form of dv lottery
June 11, 2017 at 15:11
I don’t understand.
June 11, 2017 at 11:56
how do I know if my ds-260 is been processed?
thanks
June 11, 2017 at 15:07
If it is DV2017 you can ask KCC. If it is DV2018 you just need to wait.

Hi Brit
1. One of my kids, my wife and I have a dual citizenship. Canadian and the one that made us eligible to file/ win 2018 dv lottery. Does that fact alone eliminate our chances to finish the process successfully?
2. Also the kid is alreday over 18 but still under 21 and refuses to further participate in the process (local university student and very much in love?). I can’t reason with him. Can we file DS260 without him? He is included in the lottery, together with my wife and myself.
3. My other kid (still under 18) is CA and US citizen. I assume, I still have to include him in DS260 (the part about children). Is my assumption correct?
Thank you. Marek
June 12, 2017 at 18:33
1. No
2. You can file without him, but if he doesn’t attend the interview, or does, but won’t get on the plane before the visa expires, your money will be wasted.
3. Yes
June 12, 2017 at 19:42
Re. Q. 2
1. I will most likely file the papers for all three of us and hope he will come to his senses. Just to be clear, if he does not show up for the interview, are we all disqualified? The money is irrelevant.
2. Is it possible to file the DS260 just for my wife and myself without including my son?
June 12, 2017 at 19:48
1. No
2. Yes. YOUR DS260 will list your son. You don’t have to submit a DS260 for your son. **Each** DS260 is an individual application for immigration.

Thank you.

Hi Simon,
I’m just looking for clarification on something you’ve addressed multiple times throughout your Blog, but I’ve read/interpreted a couple of different ways:
We’re DV-2018 EU18*** and I know from your graph that TYPICALLY, this CN will be scheduled for an interview around Feb/Mar of 2018.
We submitted our DS-260 IMMEDIATELY upon notification that we had been selected.
QUESTION: What I’m not clear on now is should we prepare to possibly/likely be called for interview as early as October/November IF the EU region opens as “Current” in October, because of our immediate DS-260 submission, despite the fact that our CN is EU18***?
This isn’t a question of impatience (LOL) I just want to make sure I request/pay for expedited service on certain civil documents I’m ordering if necessary, and adequately prepare our financial evidence for October/November if there’s any chance we’ll be called to interview so quickly.
Thanks! π
June 14, 2017 at 00:54
You cannot be scheduled for interview until BOTH these statements are true.
1. Your DS260’s are processed.
2. Your case is current.
EU won’t “open” as current. You won’t get an October interview.
June 14, 2017 at 01:30
Thank God. LOL I was comfortable with February/March. π
June 13, 2017 at 22:40
Hi mr brit, judgx from the numbers kcc has put out and your attempted predictions i can now guess that case number AF465** is in a great risk of not being scheduled for interview so my question is
1-am i correct and
2-if i am correct then can i play the dv 2019 lottery so as to avoid putting my eggs in one basket ,so in case dv 2018 fails me i myt have another chance for dv 2019 or
3-is it illegal to take another dv lottery while still in a successful one yet to b scheduled for interview? Thanks
June 14, 2017 at 01:28
1. Wait and see – https://britsimonsays.com/dv2018-selectee-numbers-published/
2. Yes you can
3. No
June 14, 2017 at 01:53
Hi Brit,
After reading your blogs, I got to know the first interview for DV2018 winners will be on October 2017.
My question is,
1.Does this mean that 2NL will come on 2nd half of August 2017?
2. My case number is AS13xx. And I submitted DS 260 form within first week of May. What is the probability I could get called in October 2017?
June 14, 2017 at 02:34
1. yes
2. high
June 14, 2017 at 02:39
Thanks Brit
June 14, 2017 at 08:16
hi Brit,
I have read a lot of you post. I may have just confused myself along the line.
my question is
1- if am case number AF51XXX and submit before case number AF5XXX, does 5XXX still get called in for an interview before me?
2- I defo understand 51XXX is a low chance but am currently in Australia and my interview location is syd which is fine, does this help my chances ?
June 14, 2017 at 14:01
1. Yes
2. No
