For those just being selected, you may not yet fully understand the importance of your case number. Your number is specific to your region, each region starting from 1. So there is an 2019AF1, 2019AS1, 2019EU1 and so on. The regions go up to different maximum numbers, with 1 being the lowest in each region. The number dictates when you will be interviewed, low numbers are interviewed before high numbers. Whether your number is high or low is relative within a region to the highest numbers in that region – so it is helpful in these early days to start getting an idea of what case numbers are out there.
So – please report your case number as a reply to this thread. Give your number in slightly hidden format – ignoring the leading zeros, and hiding the last 2 or 3 digits. So case number 2019AF000012345 would be shown as 2019AF12XXX. SA and OC regions have lower ranges, so just hide the last two digits – so 2019OC000001234 becomes 2019OC12XX. Always quote your number that way on public forums.
Please also give your country you are charged to (typically country of birth).

June 21, 2018 at 15:19
hi Brit,
Thanks for the marvelous job your are doing and your patience in answering our questions.
my case number is AF13XXX, country of chargeabilty, and we are waiting to fill the ds260 in October after i put to birth as you adviced. i was going through a sample DS260 form and have some few question to be clarified.
1. Prior to our coming to Korea for further studies my husband was a contract civil servant under the ministry of public health so his employment contract was prepared by them. As the government is in charge of deciding which hospital you work in, my husband worked in 3 different hospitals due to transfers . Regarding the question on employers telephone number, can we put that of the hospitals he worked in since we don’t have that of the ministry?
2. Also, my husband was to attend a health conference in Maryland this June but was rejected a B1B2 visa because they found that i won the DV. Can this have an affect on our chances of getting our dv visa as we plan taking interview here in Korea.
Thanks for your reply in advance.
June 21, 2018 at 16:45
1. Yes
2. No
June 21, 2018 at 23:05
Thank you for all your detailed work Simon! It’s been very helpful!
Case number 2019EU4xxx and DS-260 just submitted:
(a) what would you guess the chances of getting an interview are, and
(b) when is it most likely to be scheduled (later this year or next year)?
June 21, 2018 at 23:09
a. Fine
b. Yes.
June 21, 2018 at 23:14
Wow, that was a fast response! Thank you 🙂
June 22, 2018 at 00:19
Hello Brit, thanks for your good works. My CN is 2019AF9***, country of chargeability is Ghana. My wife and two kids were part of my entry, however, my last child is yet to have her passport issued.
1. Would you advise that I wait and get it before filling out the DS-260 or I can go ahead with a dummy info for the passport details and unlock and correct it when passport is issued.
2. If I were to complete DS-260 at the end of June, 2018 when am I likely to expect an interview?
3. If I have been refused a visa to the U.S. would that have any bearing on my chances of getting a DV visa?
4. What document do i use as proof of my employment? An intro letter from my employees or my appointment letter and promotional letters?
Thank you.
June 22, 2018 at 00:42
1. If you want a fast interview – and there is no real need to do that – then file using the passport number of one of the parents. Otherwise just wait until you have it.
2. Relax. All in good time.
3. Normally non immigrant visas are refused because the applicant failed to assure the CO that they would not try and stay in the USA. That is not a concern for an immigrant visa. So no problem.
4. Use your own judgement.
June 22, 2018 at 06:15
Thanks a lot Brit, this blog has been very resourceful. I really need some feedback on this, with my case number of 2019AF9***, If I apply at the end of this month, is there a possibility of an interview this year. Some feedback would really be helpful in my planning process.
Thanks

June 22, 2018 at 14:13
It’s too early to know. Wait.
June 22, 2018 at 14:33
Hey Brit,
If the H.R.6136 is passed, it has an effective date of the 1st of October 2019. Does this mean if it is passed the DV2019 will be cancelled or the DV2020?
June 22, 2018 at 14:45
What do you think?
June 22, 2018 at 14:54
I think since the 1NL says “You have been randomly selected for further processing in the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program for the fiscal year 2019 (October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2019).” that means that if this bill is passed the DV2019 program will be cancelled.
June 22, 2018 at 15:00
I think you need to read it again – more carefully.
June 22, 2018 at 15:11
Dear Mr. Brit, believe me if I am sure I would have not asked.
I take it from your answer that if the bill is passed it will not affect the selectees of the DV2019. A lesson in patience it is my friend. There is so much at stake here.
I’ve learned a lot in the past few days about the DV2019 and the way bills are passed. I’ve tried to read about the laws to understand the amends this bill will make to the laws governing the Diversity Visa program but it feels like I can’t keep up.
As always, I offer my warmest thanks to your help here on this blog. It is the best source of information regarding the Diversity Visa program.
June 22, 2018 at 15:20
Read the date of the bill! It is AFTER DV2019!
Regardless – it isn’t likely to pass – so stop worrying yourself (and probably others) about silly things that haven’t happened.
June 22, 2018 at 15:21
Thank you 🙂
June 26, 2018 at 22:35
No . It means you are selected . You are the dv lottery2019 winner . Lucky.
June 29, 2018 at 06:11
By all means I can only describe my question up there as Newbie question.
My lack of experience with the way laws are passed combined with my excessive pessimism lead me to that unfortunate guess.
As always, I commend your patience in answering questions and helping people. Thank you.

June 23, 2018 at 15:10
You will not get a Visa with them – and they will not be able to sponsor you until several years. So you need to consider as a family whether the separation is worth it. You could possibly get other visas to study in the USA.
June 23, 2018 at 15:37
Tricky question:
As per DV2019 instruction..
“the Child Status Protection Act protects children from “aging out” in certain circumstances. If you submit your DV entry before your unmarried child turns 21, and the child turns 21 before visa issuance, it is possible that he or she may be treated as though he or she were under 21 for visa processing purpose”
Anyway, it is quite likely your visa will be refused…
June 23, 2018 at 18:58
It’s not at all “tricky”. Please leave the answering to me to avoid the creation of doubt.

Hi Brit. I am from Eritrea with case # 2019AF4xxx. My marital status in the DV lottery entry is “Single” but actually i am divorced. Is it a problem in the DS-260 entry to change the marital status.
Thanks.
June 23, 2018 at 19:05
Tell the truth. Complete the DS260 accurately. Make sure you take divorce documentation to the interview.
June 24, 2018 at 07:35
Thanks Brit.
I have one more question.
As my address concerned, i have stayed in more than three countries other than my home country.
While i am filling the address an application error “You have encountered an application error. Please try again later.” is displaying.
I filled the address as:
current address in country A : Starting from Sept 2017
country B: from June 2017 to August 2017
Country C : from Sept 2014 to June 2017
Country D : from Feb 2014 to Sept 2014

Are there any chances of a second draw for dv 2019
June 24, 2018 at 06:11
It is too early to know
June 24, 2018 at 10:59
Hi Simon – this is a general question. I know you are an outside observer, like the rest of us, however given your attention to DV over the years I want to get your perspective.
There is a lot going on in US politics re immigration. Given that both Democrats and Republicans agree on cancelling DV as part of the overall immigration reform, what are your thoughts on everyone’s chances for interviews that will be taking place next summer for example? I was selected this year with interview to fall into May-June 2019 timeframe (based on previous years results), however my enthusiasm and optimism are quite low. I know that immigration reform is a huge matter that won’t get done quickly however it’s very rare that Dems and GOP have agreement on a single issue within this reform. Given the stuff that is going on at the southern border, I anticipate this reform to get prioritised in 2018 for both political parties with DV on the line as a result. Thoughts?
June 24, 2018 at 14:12
The GOP are stupidly bundling immigration reform into various versions of bills which means they cannot get agreement. Trump is moronically undermining their efforts. Unless they get smarter, there will be no changes coming soon.
Once October 1 is past, DV2019 is safe anyway.

July 29, 2018 at 20:52
I have asked you to stop doing this. It’s annoying and pointless. Don’t do that again.
As I understand it, Your number is 2019EU29XXX. That is one of the highest numbers we have seen reported, it must be towards the back of the line. It doesn’t take much thinking to realize you are somewhat at risk. However, you should also know (because I have told you multiple times) that it will be around 10/11 months before you know your fate for sure. You will know a bit more in January when we get the CEAC data. Until then, learn some patience and calm down. There is nothing you can do to make the waiting go faster.

Dear britsimone
My case no. 2019AS000144XX
When will I be interviewed ?
June 28, 2018 at 15:38
At least 1 year from now.
June 28, 2018 at 18:47
Hi there.
When filling out the second round of applications did you have to wait until the start of the fiscal year (October 1st) that your greencard was allocated for?
I have been selected but I have spoken to lawyers that I should not submit anything further until October 1st as I will be disqualified.
There is a section in the instructions that backs that up (q30) that states…
“If you are selected in the DV-2019 program, you are entitled to apply for visa issuance only during U.S.
government fiscal year 2019, which is from October 1, 2018, through September 30, 2019. We encourage
selectees to apply for visas as early as possible, once their program rank numbers become eligible”
https://travel.state.gov/content/dam/visas/Diversity-Visa/DV-Instructions-Translations/DV-2019-Instructions-Translations/DV-2019-Instructions-English.pdf
It seems straightforward but I have haven’t been able to find anyone who has been through the program to back that up. Everyone says “apply straight away.”
If you could share any light at all on this I would be hugely grateful.
Thanks so much!
June 28, 2018 at 21:50
Are you adjusting status while in the USA on another type of visa?
Why are you using a lawyer?
June 29, 2018 at 15:59
Thanks for replying!
Im adjusting my status. I have been living in the US for over 2 years.
Seeking advice from a lawyer because I have a complicated visa past, multiple citizenships, different passports and different visas used and different times etc its a big mess.
June 29, 2018 at 16:02
Also my case number is 2019OC1XX
June 29, 2018 at 17:38
Ahh cool – yes you will most likely be current in October or November latest. So – as I said – you could file as early as mid August – but October 1st is fine.
June 29, 2018 at 17:37
OK I see. Unfortunately despite what they might say, lawyers often don’t understand the DV process and often can make things worse. In reality AOS cases *can* file as soon as the VB is published that makes their case number current. However, for VERY low case numbers (which might be on the VB as early as mid August), I receommend waiting until October 1 anyway, UNLESS there is a need to get AOS done faster for some reason. HOWEVER, NOT all DV2019 cases can file on October 1 – as I said – it depends on your case number (with year and region).

Hi Brit,
If my case number is 009* within OC when you would you think the interview would be roughly speaking? I read the soonest possible would be October however if you had to guess based on prior years?
Thanks very much!

Hi Brit!
One of my friends is winner of dv lottery 2019.
After registration dv lotter 2018, He changed his name in January 2018, he didn’t expect that he will win dv loterry 2019. He has certificates of changing name.
The question is, how he must fill DS-260 form? with new name or with old name, how he registered in October dv lottery 2019?
Thanks

The DS260 has a place for current legal name and also other names used.

My CN is 2019OC5xx. I recently reopened my file to edit some address details and change of name, if I keep it unlocked til after October when I get back from a US holiday will this delay my interview til at least January next year?
June 29, 2018 at 23:44
That is hit and miss. If they had started processing before the unlock, it won’t cause a delay.
