Hello sir
I am a cameroonian got admission into nigerian law school in june 2011 in July 2011 went to Nigeria was there from July to december 2011 returned to Cameroon for Xmas break resumed school in Nigeria was there from january to March returned to Cameroon for intership returned to Nigeria in July 2011 took exams in August 2012 returned to Cameroon and finally in November 2012 went to nigeria for graduation and since then i have been living in Cameroon recently in 2016 may to July i was in Nigeria for a training peogram.
My questions are
Can i be consider to have been resident in Nigerian for a period of 12months and above ans do i need a police certificate from nigeria ?
Hi Brit,
I’m Akua from Ghana, and a have been selected for a DV lottery interview. please my problem is all my certificates have been laminated. Can this affect my chances.
Hi Brit
I’m 2017 Dv winner
I played single and got married afterward
and my wife have a kid by her first partner (they were not marry).
I have filled in my DS260 form in which I included my wife and her kid( my stepchild)
A) On the form I made a mistake not to mention her previous spouse, would that affect my case?
B) there was also mistake made in my sure name during the Dv entrance, instead of
FORKPAH my sure sure, it was written FORKPA
Can you advice?
A. No
B. People not managing to spell their own name creates suspicion and therefore risk. That risk is reduced, but not eliminated, but correcting the error on the DS260.
Dear Birt ,
I wish you health and peace .I’m from Ethiopia and my CN is AF193… would you estimate my interview date right now ? in fact I have submitted DS-260 form on may 31/2016 . I’m second year master degree student and I apply in my original application as some graduate course .so, what can i do for interview ? when can i start document authentication ?
Ethiopia is at 19200 for March interviews, so April seems likely.
Don’t worry about what the application said in terms of education, just take all documentation for educationn to the interview (High school and above).
I have a similar question. I selected ‘some graduate-level courses’ in DV entry, whereas I was in my third year of Bachelor studies. Can this affect my chances during the interview? In DS 260, I indicated my high school diploma and current education.
My interview will be late February 2017 at the Kenyan embassy, got all things ready exept for sponsor document (i-134) which i was wondering if i must provide at the interview, i have a relative in the US who agreed to host me and provided her address in DS260. Must she also fill the affidavit of support ( i-134)?
Hello sir
My wife is a dv winer of 2017 and her interview is on March 6. Firstly she applied single and got married after 2nl. Can I update as beneficiary? would that affect? Please advise me
As soon as she was married she should have unlocked her DS260, and added you to her case. Now, because the case is scheduled, it is harder. Contact the embassy and see what they instruct you to do.
I have a question regarding the police certificates. I have been living in the UK for six months and previously lived in the US for many years. I have a UK police certificate, but not an American one. Should I obtain a police certificate from the US to bring to my interview, or is that unnecessary given the many internal background checks that are part of an applicant’s screening?
Hi Mr Brit
As a dv winner 2017…..i don’t have job qualification but I have only education level 12 grade transcript it is enough for interview cos I am worried regarding that case?
Thanks in advance
Dear simon,, when I try to create an account for the interview ,first it says write your given name it gives an example as John Miguel &last name gives as example as John garcia, amy a bit confused whether should I write my name including middle name && for the last name should I also include my middle name?
Dear Brit,
My case is AF00022xxx (Egypt), I got my 2NL with an interview schedule in May. By registration in cgifederal.secure.force.com (to start the medical exam and prepare for the interview) I got the transaction confirmation page (with the document delivery address).
My question is, in this link while I reached that confirmation page:
– I still notice that the “fee payment is 0$”. Does that mean all the payments will be at the embassy office?
– I still notice “No appointment is currently scheduled”. Is it normal while the interview is already scheduled as per the 2NL?
When I played the DV I was using JOHN PAUL RICKS….But now all my recent documents have PAUL JOHN RICKS. And my 2nl already came for May. Is it too late to make corrections? Can that be a problem during interview?
You should have listed your legal name in the DS260 and mentioned the other version of the name. It is too late to change that now. I don’t know what documents have the other name in – so I can’t answer completely – but it may cause a problem during interview depending on exactly what you did.
This mistake was made by the 3rd party that entered my particulars in the form. But it’s still me, I think if KCC check the dv entrants they will see my picture.
Blaming a third party for this is NONESENSE. You are responsible for the entry and the DS260, no matter who filled them in on your behalf. Yes you can write to the embassy or KCC, but the risk will continue because YOU, not a third party, are responsible for your entry.
Good day.i need assistance with affidavit support can someone please help me with an affidavit support even you Brit Simon.please.im from Botswana.my interview is on May 25th.Thank you.
1.Hello Brit, I hope you are doing great. I told you before about my step daughter birth certificate, she is using my name on her birth certificate and I am not the biological father. She was disown at the time of her mother pregnancy and you told me I should not adopt her and I listing to your advice. Now we are scheduled for interviews, did I need any court documents or just I should go for the interviews?
2. Can we be deny because my name is on my daughter birth certificate with out adoption process? Thanks our heto
Hi Britsimon
I got selected for diversity visa lottery from Nepal and I am studying in India and I can easily get police clearance certificate in case of Nepal but it seems hard to obtain from Nepal . Since Nepal and India are open border and no requirement of visa are required . I think it’s not appropriate to disclose as nothing are shown on passport and I got other relevant document of study of high school from Nepal. Will that be okay?
Thank u

Hi Sir,
I’m a Liberian, I was selected in the 2016 dv program and up to this time I have not summited my form to KCC. I’m late now or can I summit it in June and still be qualify for an interview?
1. Can a visa be denied on the spot (without further inquiry) because you lost your high school diploma and had to get a duplicate from the school?
2. Does the medical test involve a DNA testing or you have to swear an oath during the interview that your children are yours? And
Usually, the embassy has to receive your medical (sometimes directly) from the hospital, otherwise the interview will not go on?
Hi Simon, I saw that you were advising a lot NOT to reschedule appointments.
However, I have an appointment at the London US Embassy in 1 week (DV-2017 EU00024***) and I will not be able to provide all of the required documents (especially the medical, which is scheduled for the end of July), and maybe not my home country police clearance which is taking more time than expected. I also got injured 2 weeks ago (bone fracture) which didn’t help at all in the process as you can imagine…
Should I still go to the interview without those documents? Or should I try to reschedule it via https://ais.usvisa-info.com, despite the warning message that says “ATTENTION: DIVERSITY VISA APPLICANTS – it is strongly recommended that you do NOT reschedule your visa appointment, and that you keep your original appointment date. Rescheduling your visa appointment may result in the loss of your visa number, which would disqualify you from the Diversity Visa program. If you are unable to attend your visa appointment, contact the Immigrant Visa Unit via our website and request an appointment change.”
I have contacted the Immigrant Visa Unit 2 weeks ago through https://uk.usembassy.gov/visas/iv-contact/ but without response… Also called NVC, KCC, and the US Embassy call center, without any luck, they all redirect me to the same form.
Hi Brit,I am Eric from Ghana, i won 2017 dv lottery but I was denied with tourist visa 2016 and my wife divorce me afterwards, so when I was filling the dv lottery in Oct I made it single can this affect my visa? And if yes what should I do?
You are likely to be denied. You should have said divorced. If you didn’t choose divorced, you lied, and Ghana routinely reject people they suspect to be liars.
Good day,I won the 2017 I feel the form I’m waiting for the answer but I like to know what should I start to prepared,I have no idea,I want start before the interview. Thanks
Hi Brit May God richly bless you for the wonderful work you are doing for Africa and other related countries, I won the lottery with my daughter which the mother has gone with her after divorcing with her ,will that affect my visa if I don’t go to her during the interview date if yes pls I need your help as to how to go about it.Thanks
Ahh I see why you are asking about a daughter. So – you listed the daughter – that is good, and no you do not have to apply for a GC for the daughter as your ex-wife has the child. BUT you still have risk because you entered the incorrect marital status in the entry. They may forgive that *IF* you are honest and there are no other “surprises”.
I’ve been selected for DV-2018 my case number is about 2018AF38XX, DS-260 submitted in 11 May,
When i fellow your instructions to the website dvselectee > Prepare Supporting Documents i checked my country’s PDF file and i found that i must “follow the steps below before your immigrant visa interview at the U.S. Consulate in Casablanca” Morocco.
Step 1: Register your document delivery address online http://www.ustraveldocs.com/ma/
My Question is: should i start registering from now, or should i wait for 2NL, or after the interview?!
Hi britsimon am Gitanga from Kenya,i won the 2018 diversity lottery,i submitted my ds 260 on june 2017,when do I expect for the medical/interview?case 2018AF000XXXX
I recently obtained the police certificate Italy because I was studying there although my wife’s VB number is EU14xxx and obviously we haven’t been received the 2NL yet. Is that a problem, or it has to be obtained after the 2NL ?
And something more complicated.
The reciprocity for my country (Greece) requires :
The Penal Record for Judicial Use (Piniko Mitroo gia Dikastiki Hrisi) is provided for Greek and non-Greek nationals residing Greece, as well as to Greek citizens living outside of Greece. This version is preferable to the Penal Record for General Use (Piniko Mitroo gia Geniki Hrisi), because it is more comprehensive and often contains records for convictions that have been administratively deleted from the General Use version.
The thing is that our interview will be scheduled in my wife’s country (Romania) and the Penal Record for Judicial Use CAN NOT be obtained by a citizen (it goes internally through services. For example if the interview was in Greece, the minister of justice would send the document directly to the US embassy of Athens).
I was able to acquire the Penal Record for General Use though.
What would you advice me to do? Contact the American embassy in Romania and let them know?
Yes you might need to apply for the Italian police cert again.
You haven’t made clear where you are living, but as a general principle, if a reciprocity page says you cannot get a police cert, then you are not expected to provide it. You can simply show the reciprocity page at the interview.
I am currently living in Romania with my wife. I haven’t been in Italy since my studies in 2012 and the certificate has been acquired in late June. How can I be sure if i will need to acquire a new one? Should I call at the embassy where the interview will take place?
The embassy’s Instructions for police certificates says:
If you are older than 16 years of age: The original police certificate from your country of current residence and any
countries of previous residence where you lived for one year or more. If these three items are all true, you must bring a
more recent police certificate to the interview:
1. You are older than 16 years;
2. You obtained a police certificate more than one year ago; and
3. You still live in the country that issued the police certificate.
So considering that this is about my current residence, the requirements for other countries will at least be valid for 1 year duration of the police certificate. What is your understanding?
Hi brit i was selected and i am Somali i was educated in Somalia secondary and university.
I hear that secondary certificates and university degrees from secondary schools and universities in Somalia are not allowed by US
My question:
Is there any risk to my case?
Hi Brit, tanks for the good work u r doing and ur assist, may God richly bless u
I have been selected for 2018 dv but cos of financial problems I couldn’t pass the waec but I later wrote an entrance exams at IPS and later enrolled in diploma program 2013,but am writing Nov Dec to enable me to do my degree program at the university,
My question is
1.will that effect my visa?
2.which of the cert should I go with during the Interview
3.if yes what do I do?
Tanks for ur quick response but the Nov Dec result I had is best and the diploma is also better and that of the main one wasn’t good as u know and u said I should go with all, but here in Ghana the waec cert we hv two types the private and the school type but here is the case that I hv all the two but the school one isn’t good
My question again is
1.when they ask where did I studied I hv to tell them by given them the school cert, how will I explain to them cos I was told u don’t need to talk more
2.its possible to give them the better one in addition to the diploma?
3.with ur response u said I should prepare well by which means will I prepare well,i really need ur advice tanks
1. Just be honest and answer questions truthfully.
2. Yes, but take both.
3. Read the instructions, prepare documents, be determined to be honest/accurate.
Hi Brit I think I should take this opportunity to thank u.it was like this when i was down in africa suffering and I remember asking u a lot about the interview process and trust me ur advise helped me, I have now stayed in America for 1 year,it was like a dream but finally came to pass thanks a lot our interview was the easiest thing I have ever seen
Good day.i am a DV 2017 winner and i have been issued visa in August, but I will be going to USA in November.is it ok to go after September 30th or I’m suppose to go before the deadline of September 2017?Will I be allowed entry?
Please I’m from Ghana and a dv winner, I HV fill and send my DS-260 form already but my sponsor telling me he can’t do it again. Please my question is
1. Can I change the sponsor?
2. Will it affect my chances of getting the visa.?
hallo brit,am gitanga from kenya can i use the birth certificate of my baby to submit his form ds 260? The reason am asking is that our system in Kenya the passport takes time before it gets out. because i already submitted my form and that of my spouse, now status has changed. tnx wait to hear from you.
Hello dear Brit mu wife is winner her dacuments are ready but i lived in Belorusia İtaly. 45 day ago i applied for my court records in our ministry of external affairs but there is no answer what do you think without that documents what can happen?
Have you followed the instructions from the reciprocty page??
“Police Records
Available. The Certificato Generale del Casellario Giudiziale is a certified national record of final court convictions and decisions regarding mental incompetency and bankruptcy or a statement that no such record exists (Nulla). The Certificato dei Carichi Pendenti is a certified record of pending criminal charges, or a statement that no such charges exist, from the office of the Procura della Repubblica in the applicant’s place of residence. Both certificates are required from immigrant visa applicants residing in Italy.
Persons within Italy can obtain the Casellario Giudiziale by applying in person or by mail at any office of the Procura della Repubblica. The Carichi Pendenti must be obtained at the Procura della Repubblica in the area that the applicant resides. Such offices are located in all major cities and in many small cities and large towns. Those who apply in person must submit a written request, a photocopy of a photo ID and all fees; the certificates are usually provided the day of the request.
Dear my husband is selectionned for dv2018 he has interview in senegal in novembre but i lived in iitaly 17 years ago he tell is ds260 i prefer take interview in Italy but in the letter is appointeent was in dakar What he will doing thanks
1. Normally 1 to 2 weeks
2. It is unclear what you mean. The status (LPR) is not time limited. The GC itself needs to be renewed every 10 years. The temporary visa must be used before the expiry date – which is 6 months after the date of the medical.
Good day Brit.am a DV winner 2018. Please my questions are:
1-My mom’s name on the DS-260 form was written as NANGE PRECILIA instead of PRECILIA NANGE as written in my birth certificate can that be a problem?
2-when filling the form I also put that am in the university 3rd year but has not yet gotten a degree bc the school year was not yet finish and now am in 4th year can I still take my transcripts to the interview to show that I now have a degree despite the fact that it contradicts what is in the form?
3-My medical results will only be ready after my interview bc I hard to do a further test and the results will take time b4 coming out, does that reduces my chances of getting the visa?

January 7, 2017 at 07:06
Please if am getting the police certificate for what period?
January 7, 2017 at 16:56
THat depends on the issuing authority in that country. In most countries the police cert covers all dates. Use your judgement about your case.

You should have listed your legal name in the DS260 and mentioned the other version of the name. It is too late to change that now. I don’t know what documents have the other name in – so I can’t answer completely – but it may cause a problem during interview depending on exactly what you did.
April 13, 2017 at 08:00
This mistake was made by the 3rd party that entered my particulars in the form. But it’s still me, I think if KCC check the dv entrants they will see my picture.
April 13, 2017 at 08:06
And just a question Brit. Is it safe for me to write my embassy or KCC to explain the situation?
April 13, 2017 at 13:31
Blaming a third party for this is NONESENSE. You are responsible for the entry and the DS260, no matter who filled them in on your behalf. Yes you can write to the embassy or KCC, but the risk will continue because YOU, not a third party, are responsible for your entry.

2. Can we be deny because my name is on my daughter birth certificate with out adoption process? Thanks our heto
April 28, 2017 at 00:33
1. Take whatever documents you have but if the child is your step daughter through marriage that is all you need to prove.
2. Not normally – no.
April 27, 2017 at 11:12
Hi Brit I’m Chris from Liberia I’m part of the 2017 selectee and I have not submit my ds260 yet,can I submit any time?
April 28, 2017 at 00:27

Hi Britsimon
I got selected for diversity visa lottery from Nepal and I am studying in India and I can easily get police clearance certificate in case of Nepal but it seems hard to obtain from Nepal . Since Nepal and India are open border and no requirement of visa are required . I think it’s not appropriate to disclose as nothing are shown on passport and I got other relevant document of study of high school from Nepal. Will that be okay?
Thank u
May 10, 2017 at 20:10
Is it OK to lie?? No.

Hi Sir,
I’m a Liberian, I was selected in the 2016 dv program and up to this time I have not summited my form to KCC. I’m late now or can I summit it in June and still be qualify for an interview?
May 28, 2017 at 14:02
I’m assuming you mean DV2017. If so, you *might* still get an interview if you submit your DS260 now. Maybe.
June 5, 2017 at 22:50
What is the advantage of affidavit support in the dv program?

June 8, 2017 at 04:10
I have no idea what you mean.
June 11, 2017 at 16:24
June 11, 2017 at 17:44
1. Visas can be denied for various reasons – but usually people are given time to produce missing documents.
2. Sometimes DNA tests are required.
Procedures about medicals vary by country.

June 28, 2017 at 01:09
I don’t know.
June 28, 2017 at 01:52
Hi Simon, I saw that you were advising a lot NOT to reschedule appointments.
I don’t know what to do 🙁
Thanks for your help
June 28, 2017 at 02:53
So you know I advise people NOT to reschedule.
The USVisa website advises NOT to reschedule.
But you are still asking…
Don’t reschedule. Make the appointment and follow up with missing documents.
June 28, 2017 at 16:03
You’re never too sure… 🙂 Thank you. I’ll let you know how it goes
July 12, 2017 at 09:20
Hi Brit,I am Eric from Ghana, i won 2017 dv lottery but I was denied with tourist visa 2016 and my wife divorce me afterwards, so when I was filling the dv lottery in Oct I made it single can this affect my visa? And if yes what should I do?
July 12, 2017 at 18:36
You are likely to be denied. You should have said divorced. If you didn’t choose divorced, you lied, and Ghana routinely reject people they suspect to be liars.
July 12, 2017 at 18:44
What of me showing to the CO the divorce cert because I hv the divorce cert that the court gave me
July 12, 2017 at 19:26
THat would be fine if you had entered divorced.
July 13, 2017 at 17:57

Can I schedule my medical from any hospitals or what…
July 20, 2017 at 13:34
No, it must be someone approved by the embassy. Flow their instructions.
July 21, 2017 at 10:44
Hi Brit May God richly bless you for the wonderful work you are doing for Africa and other related countries, I won the lottery with my daughter which the mother has gone with her after divorcing with her ,will that affect my visa if I don’t go to her during the interview date if yes pls I need your help as to how to go about it.Thanks
July 21, 2017 at 10:46
Sorry will I be denied without going with my daughter for the interview date?
July 21, 2017 at 11:54
I don’t understand the question – you hadn’t mentioned a daughter. Are you now saying that you also left a child off the entry?
July 21, 2017 at 11:58
Ahh I see why you are asking about a daughter. So – you listed the daughter – that is good, and no you do not have to apply for a GC for the daughter as your ex-wife has the child. BUT you still have risk because you entered the incorrect marital status in the entry. They may forgive that *IF* you are honest and there are no other “surprises”.
July 21, 2017 at 16:36
Good morning,
I’ve been selected for DV-2018 my case number is about 2018AF38XX, DS-260 submitted in 11 May,
When i fellow your instructions to the website dvselectee > Prepare Supporting Documents i checked my country’s PDF file and i found that i must “follow the steps below before your immigrant visa interview at the U.S. Consulate in Casablanca” Morocco.
Step 1: Register your document delivery address online http://www.ustraveldocs.com/ma/
My Question is: should i start registering from now, or should i wait for 2NL, or after the interview?!
Thanks for your help.
July 21, 2017 at 17:30
Wait until the 2NL
July 30, 2017 at 12:22

July 31, 2017 at 01:26
https://britsimonsays.com/dv2018-basic-questions/
August 14, 2017 at 23:39
Dear Simon,
Hello again.
Thank you in advance.
August 14, 2017 at 23:54
Yes you might need to apply for the Italian police cert again.
You haven’t made clear where you are living, but as a general principle, if a reciprocity page says you cannot get a police cert, then you are not expected to provide it. You can simply show the reciprocity page at the interview.
August 15, 2017 at 09:37
I am currently living in Romania with my wife.
1. You are older than 16 years;
2. You obtained a police certificate more than one year ago; and
3. You still live in the country that issued the police certificate.
So considering that this is about my current residence, the requirements for other countries will at least be valid for 1 year duration of the police certificate. What is your understanding?
August 15, 2017 at 14:25
Can you PROVE you have not been to Italy in that timeframe? Why take the risk of delay?? Just get a new one nearer the interview.
August 16, 2017 at 04:51
I see your point.
One last thing. When submitting the DS260 as primary occupation I put Not Employed as I had moved recently in the country.
If that changes I should open the DS260 to change my work status?
August 16, 2017 at 04:54
Ideally yes – but it isn’t a big deal.
August 23, 2017 at 10:38
Hi brit i was selected and i am Somali i was educated in Somalia secondary and university.
I hear that secondary certificates and university degrees from secondary schools and universities in Somalia are not allowed by US
My question:
Is there any risk to my case?
August 23, 2017 at 14:05
The only way to know is at the interview.
August 31, 2017 at 19:21
Hi Brit, tanks for the good work u r doing and ur assist, may God richly bless u
August 31, 2017 at 22:12
1. Possibly yes
2. Take everything you have
3. Prepare as well as you can.
September 1, 2017 at 10:19
Tanks for ur quick response but the Nov Dec result I had is best and the diploma is also better and that of the main one wasn’t good as u know and u said I should go with all, but here in Ghana the waec cert we hv two types the private and the school type but here is the case that I hv all the two but the school one isn’t good
My question again is
1.when they ask where did I studied I hv to tell them by given them the school cert, how will I explain to them cos I was told u don’t need to talk more
2.its possible to give them the better one in addition to the diploma?
3.with ur response u said I should prepare well by which means will I prepare well,i really need ur advice tanks
September 1, 2017 at 13:28
1. Just be honest and answer questions truthfully.
2. Yes, but take both.
3. Read the instructions, prepare documents, be determined to be honest/accurate.
September 1, 2017 at 13:37

hallo brit,am gitanga from kenya can i use the birth certificate of my baby to submit his form ds 260? The reason am asking is that our system in Kenya the passport takes time before it gets out. because i already submitted my form and that of my spouse, now status has changed. tnx wait to hear from you.
September 20, 2017 at 17:04
For the baby, people often use the passport number of the parent to submit the DS260 before they have the child’s passport.
September 26, 2017 at 04:36
Hello dear Brit mu wife is winner her dacuments are ready but i lived in Belorusia İtaly. 45 day ago i applied for my court records in our ministry of external affairs but there is no answer what do you think without that documents what can happen?
September 26, 2017 at 04:52
Have you followed the instructions from the reciprocty page??
Those who apply in person must submit a written request, a photocopy of a photo ID and all fees; the certificates are usually provided the day of the request.

hi Brit how can i register for interview
October 2, 2017 at 18:29
KCC schedule your interview. Once scheduled, some embassies ask people to register with a courier – but the embassy provides instructions about that.
October 5, 2017 at 15:16
Dear Brit what are the documents to be prepared for an interview. Would be more than glad to receive ur support as solicited.

HELLO BRIT
please how would i get to know my dv lottery interview appointment date .when my case is current in the Visa bulletin?
October 13, 2017 at 16:18
Check the FAQ for how to read the visa bulletin.
October 16, 2017 at 17:18
hi Brit,
1 how many days will i wait after i took my interview to get visa for dv 2018?
2 for how many years is the visa validity?
October 16, 2017 at 17:34

November 17, 2017 at 15:28
1. No
2. Yes
3. Delay, just delay.
