CEAC data DV2016
The CEAC system has been updated with the case data. Interestingly this was made available at the exactly the same date as last year – I think there is a logic switch to only make the data available from 2016.
So – a recap for those that are not aware of what the CEAC data is. CEAC is a government database/web page that allows people to enter their case number and get some basic status information. The site can be access at this link and you can enter the case number without leading zeros. So – if your number is 2016AF00012345, you would enter that as 2016AF12345. We can see that case currently shows “READY”.
So what do the status codes mean.
The first status for every case is “AT NVC”. You can ignore the text on the case – the case has not been passed to NVC. What this status means is that the case is in one of the following situations.
- The case is not yet current.
- The case is current, BUT the DS260 has not be submitted at all, or it was submitted but not processed yet – and therefore not scheduled.
- The case is current, the form is processed, but it is waiting to be scheduled (typically because the cases have not yet been sent to the embassies yet).
“In Transit”
This status is shown for a brief period when KCC has scheduled the interview, and transferred the case to the embassy. However, the embassy has not yet updated CEAC to acknowledge they have received the case.
“READY”
This is the next status after in transit. It means the case has arrived at the embassy for interview. Sometimes a case will continue to show ready even after the interview.
“Issued”
Pretty obviously – this is the status we all want to see! The interview took place, was successful and the visa has been approved/issued.
“Refused”
This is the status no one wants to see, meaning the interview took place and the selectee was denied. A derivative can be refused, while the principal is approved. However, if the principal is refused – all the derivatives are refused also – even if the embassy fails to update CEAC.
“Administrative Processing”
This is when someone did not have all the documents at the interview OR some additional checks are needed before the case can be adjudicated. AP can last a few days or several months. The status updates during that time are meaningless.
Derivative number.
For cases that are scheduled we can see the related derivative numbers. Case 01 is the principal and derivatives are case 02, 03 and so on.
Thanks to a smart guy called Rafikbo, I am able to extract all the CEAC data. I will shortly publish that data and will update that about twice a month. The data lets us understand the progress, predict cutoffs and interviews and so on. So – this is a valuable resource that we can all use to understand the process better. Hopefully this post will help you to understand…

This is to do with the travel ban.
“The consular officer is reviewing your eligibility for a waiver under the Proclamation. To approve a waiver, the consular officer must determine that denying your entry would cause undue hardship, that your entry would not pose a threat to the national security or public safety of the United States, and that your entry would be in the national interest of the United States. This can be a lengthy process, and until the consular officer can make an individualized determination on these three factors, your visa application will remain refused under Section 212(f). You will be contacted with a final determination on your visa application as soon as practicable.”

Hello my wife had interview on nov 8th 2017, they refused it and said an additional sponsor was required so i sent the required documents and they received them on nov 18th 2017 and my case has been updated sevral times but there is a corresponding number after the case which was not there before it says 01 after my case number. What does this mean. I know you said you would explain it in later posts but i cannot find that post. Please let me know what that means?
December 20, 2017 at 20:45
The “01” simply means the principal selectee.
What embassy is that?

Hello BritSimon,
I am DV2018 lottery applicant. I have finished my interview in Nov. 21st. Trying to check my Visa Status it says “Invalid Case number” I saw you commenting that this is due to CEAC didnt upload cases of 2018 yet.
Q: Can I call NVC to check a DV Visa status ?
December 6, 2017 at 17:19
No. NVC don’t know anything about your case. Just be patient.

Hi. I was placed under 221g but my status on ceac says refused. Is it refused or under 221g? This is probably one of the very rare cases when I’m hoping the answer is 221g.
October 26, 2017 at 16:11
I assume yours is a DV2017 case? If a DV2017 case on AP (221g) wasn’t concluded AND the case approved before the end of day on September 30th, there is no possible way to get approval after that date. So – they could leave the status reading AP, or they could update to refused. Either way – the result is the same – no visa can be granted.

Hi BritSimon. I’m sorry I’m not sure what DV is. What happened was that I applied for a B2 visa on September 15th. I was told I was under 221g. The Ceac status read refused on the day of the interview and was not updated since. However, I was sent an email requesting more information on the same say (all my email addresses, phone numbers, social media accounts etc.) and I replied with all the info on the same day. Then, a couple of weeks later, I was asked in for yet another interview, and the agent said from there it might take 2-3 weeks still (I hit the 3 week mark a few days ago but still no update). Are you sure there is no change coming after 221g in this case? If not, does that mean I should apply again? Also please note thay I didn’t receive any email or communication stating final refusal yet. Thanks for any help.
October 27, 2017 at 12:15
Ahh I see. DV is DV lottery – I only answer questions about DV lottery.

HI simon, just wanted to send a note of thanks for your help throughout the process. My wife and I received our stamped passports and had our activation trip in August. We intend to make our move in February permanently with no unforeseen circumstances. Thanks again
October 27, 2017 at 13:37
Awesome! Best of luck!
October 2, 2017 at 16:29

August 2, 2017 at 08:08
Hello there
My visa has been under adminstration process for almost a month now and my school start date is also drawing closer and closer please can you help me on what to do
August 2, 2017 at 15:25
There is nothing you can do except wait.
August 2, 2017 at 16:23
I would call your consulate, that’s what I did and it was sorted that very day. They can contact London on your behalf with good reason.
July 17, 2017 at 16:42
Hi Simon, thanks for your useful guide. I asked this on a forum I believe you moderate and afterwards found your post. I am at “Administrative processing” apart from checking every day can you see a time when the status was changed? E.g a date it went from ready to administrative processing.
July 18, 2017 at 13:18
Why on earth do you need the Date/TIME it went to AP. It went to AP. Now you wait. Checking every day doesn’t help at all. Number of updates on CEAC is irrelevant.
July 18, 2017 at 13:22
I had been given a timeframe of 10-15 days and wanted to see at what stage it went to administrative processing but things seem to be moving now. Urgent travel required with work so need my passport back asap
July 18, 2017 at 13:29
Do you mean it is not real AP, just the AP that shows before issued? That status lasts a day or two.
July 18, 2017 at 13:39
I got to speak to someone at the Embassy who said things would be moving tomorrow so I’m happy 🙂
Do you know the best way I could change the delivery address of the green cards once they are issued? I tried at the Embassy but they said they weren’t responsible for that.
Again thanks for all your help through the entire process it’s been most excellent.
July 18, 2017 at 13:41
OK.
You will get your visas delivered to the address you have given the courier.
At the POE (USA arrival airport) you have the FINAL chance to change the US delivery address. You must remember to do that because once you have entered the GC delivery address cannot be updated (even though you must inform USCIS of address changes).
July 18, 2017 at 13:45
Ok thanks. I will ask them to change it at the POE (most likely US customs in Dublin) thanks!

Hi,
Case Category: F4 (sister of US citizen)
My family and I had an interview on the 24th of April 2017 in Islamabad, the interview went well. At the end of the interview Visa officer handed me a white paper with a check mark on 221g denial. He said send us remain documents (photographs and medical reports) then we will start work on your case.we have submitted within same week.He has also kept our passports. But I am getting worried it is more than 1 and half month one of our family friends got thier passports within three weeks and our case is stuck in AP. Our case was updated 4 to 5 timed but there is no response from 2 weeks. One of my brother name is Usama will it cause problem that’s why they are delaying ??
Thanks in advance

I have my interview in Accra Ghana on 30 may 2017 with my wife and my child , I’m from Guinea Conakry . they put us on administrating process , then ask me to fill my son DS 260 form . I decided to be interviewed here and hope that it will not be an issued , I made all translations required. I’m living in Ghana four years now. thanks
May 8, 2017 at 08:38
After Interview finished. When check it, says at NVC.what does it mean at NVC.
May 8, 2017 at 17:10
It sounds like you checked the wrong case number.
May 14, 2017 at 00:43
In some cases the embassy/consulate return the petition back to NVC for further review along with their comment.
May 14, 2017 at 04:35
DV cases have nothing to do with NVC – so, no.
April 18, 2017 at 22:57

August 28, 2017 at 02:51
Patience. Just patience.
August 30, 2017 at 20:47
Will the embassy call everyone before September 30 I mean those on AP
August 30, 2017 at 20:54
No. Some AP cases will not be resolved before the deadline. If that happens, the case cannot be approved.
September 29, 2017 at 17:08
My wife is the principle applicant she got refuse and i stay in AP is there any reason
September 29, 2017 at 17:40
Your case will be refused also. They simply did not update the CEAC status.
September 13, 2017 at 03:04
We got addition update the 31 of August and the 11 of September. We have been on AP 117 days now I can’t understand our case brother.
April 14, 2017 at 11:21
Thanks for your quick response but I’m still concerned because now has been 10 days no updates I didn’t waiver 601 and it was approved on March 7th at the end of the interview the officer said everything looked good and we will send it off to Washington so I can explain that to me please
April 14, 2017 at 13:56
I can’t explain, except to say “patience”.
April 14, 2017 at 01:46
Hi there, My interview date for spouse IV was on April 11,2017 and issued 221(g) white letter for Administrative process but do not request me any document to provide and also did not return my passport. Its been three days now but my visa status did not changed yet. What is it most likely to be?
April 14, 2017 at 02:00
After 3 whole days of waiting, what is it most likely to be?
Lack of patience.
April 14, 2017 at 05:58
Thank you for the fast response. But I was to mean that, most of the people who got 221(g) letter I heard, their passport were returned to them immediately after the interview. But in my case the officer told me that he would rather keep my passport and make further Admin process so he didn’t return my passport. So i am asking if this means something different? Thank you again.
April 14, 2017 at 14:00
Not really – the CO can keep or return the passport, both things happen regularly.
April 14, 2017 at 19:46
Thank you Brit
