Hi Simon,
I am now on my activation trip and got my visa endorsed this morning 🙂 The immigration officer at the counter told me that he himself came with a DV visa some years ago. 🙂
They were not interested in the chest X-rays wihich means I still have the CD from the doctor.
Will I need it at any other point or can I get rid of it?
Thank you!
June 17, 2017 at 14:05
Welcome to the USA. You won’t need the CD at any point.

Hello Simon ,
I would appreciate it if you could help me with this situation where I put myself.
I am a British citizen who was born in Brazil. I have lived in London for the last 11 years and since then I have been to Brazil every summer to see my family.
Unfortunately, I made a mistake this year by buying a plane ticket with a US connection. I did not know I would need a visa / permit just to connect flights.
So I mistakenly requested transit C1 instead of ESTA.
I went to the interview this week and my visa was denied in section 214. I was not asked for any proof of my ties in the UK. So I applied for ESTA and the trip was not allowed.
My flight to Brazil is on July 14 (connection in Chicago for 3 hours) and return to London August 16 (connection in Washington for 3 hours).
I just noticed that transit C1 is only valid for 29 days and I am spending 34 days in Brazil, so even if it was accepted, it would not be enough time for my return.
I do not know what to do now. I’m lost.
Do I still have a chance to get a visa? What should I apply for?
I have, as proof, 8 consecutive years of tickets to Brazil, all of them in July, I can get a letter from my boss which is an American Citizen(7 years in the same job) and other things like payslips, bank statement, etc.
I tried to contact the embassy, but I did not have an answer, so I tried to change my flight, but neither is it possible.
Thank you!
June 17, 2017 at 14:53
I don’t know anything about that.

Hello Brit: during our interview we didn’t had sufficient money to pay for our daughter, so we only paid for three person.
Now that I am turning around to get some money:
1.do we still have the chance to pay for her visa?
2. If yes, how the process go let or how do the process start or go let.
June 17, 2017 at 14:56
You have made things difficult. Contact the embassy, to see if they can do anything.
June 17, 2017 at 02:37
Came to US June 30th. I am 20 years old. Now I am planning to go to college. I have few questions to ask from you.
1. In FAFSA, am I a dependent student or an independent student?
2. What should I do to get an insurance?
Thank you in advance
June 17, 2017 at 14:56
I don’t know anything about that.
June 17, 2017 at 00:25

The high school where I was studying changed its name and address. I’m not sure if to write old or new name and address into DS 260. What do you think ? Thanks

June 16, 2017 at 20:19
Dear BritSimon,
First of all thank you so much for your help.
I would like to ask few questions regarding DS-260, section “Work / Education / Training”.
1. I’m from Slovakia EU, my education history is Primary school (9 years), High school (4 years), University (6 years – Master). Is my primary school considered in USA to be “secondary level educational institution” ? do I have to mention it / add it ?
2. First question in section “Previous Work / education … “ is : Were you previously employed ? I was running my own business for 8 months, the answer to that question is yes ? Than what I have to write in “Employer or school name” ? Self-employment ?
3. “In which occupation do you intend to work in the U.S ?” I have job offer from a US business company (interior design) but for me its just something for start. Later on I want to find a job as teacher that is my future goal. So the answer would be BUSINESS or EDUCATION ?
4. I’m not sure I understand “Present work / education” section. I have graduated in 2014 – Masters degree. After school I was traveling for a year, than running my own business and right now I decided to quit my business so I’m not employed. I want qualify through education. So my Primary occupation is EDUCATION ?
5. I was working for somebody else than me only once in my life. That was for three months Work and Travel USA program. So what would be answer for question “Were you previously employed ?” Do I have to mention US employer ? My own business counts to this too ?
Thank you, Best.
June 16, 2017 at 21:23
1. It wouldn’t harm you to list it, but it may be OK without it.
2. Yes
3. Whatever you want…
4. No. You are unemployed – meaning no occupation. Previous education and employment will be listed.
5. Whatever you want.
Don’t overthink trivial things.
June 16, 2017 at 19:06
Hi Brit,
Thanks so much for all the help and the time you put in for helping others,
my question about DS260 just confused about something. Am an engineer and work in a company, do i tick the “Does this job require at least 2 years of training or experience? ” yes or no? i have a university degree. Thanks
June 16, 2017 at 19:50
“Yes”
June 16, 2017 at 18:55
Hi Brit,
in DS260 form it says in the help for surname “Enter all surnames as listed in your passport” .. In my passport it has my first name, Father’s name and his middle name, Grandfather name, Family name.
DO I have to list all the names or only the Family name in the surname section pls? thank you a million.
June 16, 2017 at 19:52
I don’t know procedures in your country. So – use your own judgement to achieve the result that the DS260 matches the passport.
June 16, 2017 at 18:54
Dear Brit,
Who should fill out DS-260 of derivative ? principal applicant ? or both together (principal applicant and derivative) ? In my case spouse. Thank you.
June 16, 2017 at 19:53
It doesn’t matter who fills it out.
June 16, 2017 at 18:42
Good day Brit how many people where selected from Cameroon for Dv 2018
June 16, 2017 at 19:55

June 16, 2017 at 17:58
Hi Brits,
I jus check my DV 2018 result and I am successful the questions are:
(1) I am getting marry july 14,2017 can I add my wife to the DV program?
(2) Will I not face problem with the CO at the embassy for adding my wife while the result is already out?
June 16, 2017 at 18:02
Always check the FAQ first.
1. https://britsimonsays.com/marital-status-getting-married-dv-lottery-process/
2. No – but you might be asked for proof the relationship existed prior to the lottery win.
June 16, 2017 at 17:12
Hi
I’m 2018DV winner
I have a question regarding the number of educational institutions attented
I have 2 masters degree and a certificate of Chinese language from a university in china and still studying Chinese language it’s only a certificate. I mentioned 5 and submitted my ds260 and now I unlocked to mention 4(elementary, primary, high school and university) but while re submitting my DS260 they mention the number of educational institutions attented does not match educations entered.
Now I’m confused is it 4 or 5 ??? because the certificate I got it’s also from a university
Kindly
June 16, 2017 at 17:30
You can decide whether to include the Chinese University or not.
June 16, 2017 at 17:52
I think I should include it because I’m currently in China with a work-study visa which means I should include my work and my studies.
So in that case for the number of educational institutions attented should be 5
Thanks for your answer

Hello simon !
On dv entry at address , i filled in the address of my parents . I have born there and lived there . Then i went in different city for study . i have 3 years in this city currently student here . On ds260 i filled in the address that im living now as student . Is that a problem ? Im worried .
Thank you in advance .
June 16, 2017 at 17:31
Not a problem.
June 16, 2017 at 15:36
Hi Brit
My wife happen to be a DV 2017 selectee. We got married in December 2016.I want to join her to the U.S. but my worry is that in November 2016 I went to the embassy as a single person for an interview to go to the US for my masters program but unfortunately I was denied the visa. Please will this affect us during our interview. Thanks
June 16, 2017 at 17:43
Well yes – they might suspect your marriage is not based on a real relationship. In November you wanted to move to America, once that was denied you married someone who was likely to get a Green Card – so it OBVIOUSLY seems suspicious.
June 17, 2017 at 21:14
So what do you advice that I do?Should I go with her for the interview or I should let her go and later she will file for me.
June 17, 2017 at 21:51
We got married in December 2016 and the results of the dv program was released in May this year. She was selected in this current dv program that was released in May and are yet to start their processes in September. So is not like I already knew she was likely to get a green card before we got married. The married existed before she won the lottery. What do you suggest that I do since I have been refused visa before.
June 18, 2017 at 01:27
You said she was a DV2017 winner. Perhaps you mean DV2018 – in which case it will be less suspicious. She must tell them she is married and you should process as a married couple.
June 16, 2017 at 14:54

Hi Simon,
from Ukraine. in my passport i have registration for last 10 years at my home town. but during that time i have rented flats other town due to job location (at least 3 other addresses for more then 3 years each). should i indicate my registration as it is in passport or should i indicate all rented flats? i saw in your article LIVED but in my case that was unofficial without any registration. thank you in advance for reply.
June 16, 2017 at 17:50
Just list the main address in your home town.
June 16, 2017 at 12:47
Hello Brit,
We are DV 2016 winners. Our first entry was on 5/9/16 (dd/mm/yy), within the 6mo of the visa expiry, after which we returned back to our home countries to wrap up our affairs and plan to return on 07/07/17. My concern is that in the current environment I want to be absolutely sure of the law and my right with regards to being allowed up to one year to return since our initial entry. Is there a law that allows us a new greencard holders this initial window of grace to be able to return after one year of being away?
Best Regards,
Ahmed
June 16, 2017 at 17:51
It is once year ABSENCE – not within one year of the initial entry.
June 17, 2017 at 12:27
I’m confused. What do you mean?
June 17, 2017 at 14:58
You can be out of the USA (absent) for 1 year.
June 16, 2017 at 12:45
Hello BritSimon,
DV 2018, DS-260, Present work/education/training information:
Primary occupation : NOT EMPLOYED
Will it cause a problem ? is it better to find quickly some job just to avoid “not employed” answer ?
Thank you for your help
June 16, 2017 at 17:52
Doesn’t matter.
June 16, 2017 at 11:32
HI BRIT,
I have entered my name in edv as: Osman Mohamed Osman
but in my passport the name is written as: Osman Mohamed Osman ali
in my old passport the name was: Osman ali while in my own language its full as in the new passport
so while filling the ds 260 I have written my full name as: Osman Mohamed Osman ali
**Have you ever used other names (i.e., maiden, religious, professional, alias, etc.)?
so in this question above should I indicate my previous passport name as: Osman Ali ?
what do you think, will they would be of any issue?
Please help
thanks
June 16, 2017 at 17:52
Yes use the other names used section.
No problem.
June 16, 2017 at 11:02
Hello simon !
Thank you for your guide .
I have a question
1- im studying in another city but same country . I have came here only for studies.
“Is your mailing address as your present address ” ? Should i answer YES or should i put the addres of my parents house where i lived before coming here .
2- In the addres i filled in only street name because the system doesnt allow “xx/x/x”.
June 16, 2017 at 17:53
1. Parents house is fine.
2. Ok
June 16, 2017 at 18:41
Case 3xxx EU . I completed on 23 may ds 260 as i made some revisions . Do you have an idea when can be the interview ? Thank you
June 16, 2017 at 19:56
No. I don’t even know what year your win relates to…..
June 16, 2017 at 19:58
This year . Dv2018
June 16, 2017 at 20:09
DV2017 is “this year”.
Your interview will be late in 2017.
June 16, 2017 at 10:43
Hello again Simon. Just want to clarify if I need to register for Selective Service immediately on arrival ( I am only staying for a few days ) or when I move there permanently in a few months.
June 16, 2017 at 17:53
Immediately.
June 19, 2017 at 01:25
That was my final question . Many thanks for all the information and advice .
June 16, 2017 at 10:33
HI simon,
1.our streets don’t have specific address,so I just mentioned my University where am working and living as address one and name of the town address two. Do I need correction?
June 16, 2017 at 10:26
Dear brit,
My passport reads four names as below,
My name, father, gr father , surname
For the ds260 i have wrote
My surname in surname feild and my name with father name only in the giveb name feild.
So my gr fathers name not mentioned on the ds260 , does this disqualifies me at the interview and should i ask kcc to unlock and edit it?
Thnx a lot
June 16, 2017 at 17:54
The name in your DS260 should match the name in the passport. If it doesn’t unlock and correct.
June 16, 2017 at 18:39
The names on DS260 match the ones in the passport but the passport has additional name it is my grandfather’s name so should i add it to DS 260 or it will not affect my application?
June 16, 2017 at 10:12
Hi Simon, I tried logging in to my DS-260 form online and the expiration date on the top, right of my form showed 2013. is that a problem?
June 16, 2017 at 17:55
No. Ignore it.
June 16, 2017 at 10:06
HELLO BRITSIMON AND THANK YOU FOR ALL THOSE ADVISES
I HAVE FILLED MY DS260 BUT WHEN I WANT TO SUBMIT MY FORM WE NOTIFY ME THAT THE CASE NUMBER I ENTERED DOES NOT MATCH THE CASE NUMBER I ENTERED AT SIGN IN.
PLEASE I AM VERY CONFUSE
I AM THE PRINCIPAL APPLICANT SO I AM THE ONE WHO FILL THE INFORMATION OF MY DERIVATIVE. AT THE LAST STEP SIGN AND SUBMIT WE ASKED DID ANYONE ASSIST YOU IN FILLING OUT THIS APPLICATION? SHOULD I ANSWER BY YES OR NO WHEN I WILL SUBMIT FOR ALL MY DERIVATIVES?
THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING
June 16, 2017 at 12:49
On the Sign and Submit page of the DS-260, you will need to re-enter your DV case number without the zeros (e.g. if the case number is 2018AF0000012345, enter ‘2018AF12345’). Entering the full case number with zeros will generate a validation error. 🙂
June 16, 2017 at 21:34
THANK YOU MAX

I fill my ds-260 form regarding my education history like this
High school education….from sep.2004 up to june 2008
University education ….from sep.2007 up to july 2011 is there any problem with this?
June 16, 2017 at 04:23
Hi Simon, I have another question regarding the old DV 2017 issue. Do you think if the winner goes through AOS instead of CP, it is more probable that he might not get disqualified? Is it possible to switch to AOS at all, if you have already been scheduled for CP? Say, if the winner goes to the US now and then applied for AOS? Would it make a difference?
June 16, 2017 at 05:48
Well you can’t just go to the USA and do AOS, as you need an appropriate visa and then cannot have immigrant intent when you enter. So there is no point in discussing it, NOT THAT ANYONE KNOWS YET!!
June 16, 2017 at 05:52
You are absolutely right, thank you. We will wait and see.
June 16, 2017 at 03:44
Hi Simon is AF376** a risk because it is close to Eu CN
June 16, 2017 at 05:46
It has nothing to do with EU.

Hi Simon,
I unlocked my ds260 for my son but there is no where i can add a precious address. He is 14 and i listed his address since 2010. Can you help pls
June 16, 2017 at 03:09
Just do the best you can. Address history for a child is not important.
June 16, 2017 at 00:53
Dear Simon,
I had my interview with my family (wife & 2 children) at 24/5 at Cairo embassy when the officer told us that our visas were approved and to wait them withen two weeks, but then we found ourselves on AP whan we checked CEAC.
By emailing the embassy, asking if there is any document missing or extra information/clarification is needed from my side, I got the general reply of mandatory administrative processing with no extra feedback.
For me (the principle applicant) I have a valid P1-P2 visa when I passed through 4 months on AP.
1- Do I have to do anything from my side to accelerate this AP?
2-Can this AP take 4 months like the AP was done on my P1-P2 visa which means we could miss the fesical year?
June 16, 2017 at 02:09
1. Nothing can accelerate the process.
2. It’s possible.
June 15, 2017 at 22:37
How many months in average do AOS applicants have to wait from the time they file until they get it approved? (So I won’t miss the opportunity to get approved on time)
June 15, 2017 at 23:45
It varies. There is no “average”. AOS cases almost never time out – even those cases that only get current in the last month of the year. RELAX!!!
June 16, 2017 at 00:22
I am worried because of the months (or years) it takes for them to do the background check. Do they shorten that?
June 16, 2017 at 00:30
No. It takes as long as it takes. But it doesn’t take years. It takes months for people fro some areas such as Iran, but that isn’t “normal” for most cases.
June 16, 2017 at 00:50
Sorry for my insistence. So how long do those background checks typically take for someone from a not “high risk country”? Would you advise AOS over CP?
June 16, 2017 at 02:12
I don’t mind multiple questions – as long as you read what I already answered. I already said. It varies.
AOS and CP both have pros and cons.
July 4, 2017 at 01:57
I saw USCIS processing times for form 485 are taking more than a year. Is that the timing that will apply for DV adjustment of status? That would be make lose my greencard.
July 4, 2017 at 03:06
No, DV cases don’t follow normal timelines.
June 15, 2017 at 21:22
Hi Simon, my case numbee is EU 38xxxx does it have any risk to not have an interview? Thank You!

June 15, 2017 at 20:18
Nathsil pls I had my interview on 13th June 2017 and I was found intelligible under section 221(g), that my case would be sent NVC, what does that mean, is it automatic denial or what?
June 15, 2017 at 20:55
No. 221(g) is a temporary denial – allowing time for additional paperwork to be provided,. or some additional required checking.
June 15, 2017 at 19:22
Is it true USCIS offers expedited background check for DV Lottery Winners who choose to do it through adjustment of status?
June 15, 2017 at 20:54
No.

Hi Simon.
Am dv AF2018……….52000 from kenya n I checked the number of kenyans selected for 2018 was 2996 n total number of selectees for 2018 was 116000 globally
When I check the number of individuals selected was 116000 does this number include the derivatives n do they share the same case number as a family
SInce the limit or maximum number of visa that can be issued to any one country globally is 7% =3500 does it mean any country with less than 3500 they will be granted if they meet all the requirements
