Dear Simon,
1. US GC holders can travel to Canada without visas. So, once I activate my US immigration visa upon my arrival to the States in December, can I travel and stay in Canada with Canada-based friends for Christmas?
2. As a US permanent resident, if I wish to travel to a destination that requires a visa in my home country’s passport, am I supposed to travel back to my country to get that visa? Or do I just apply for one at the embassy of that country in the USA?
3. After receiving my GC, I may need to occasionally travel back to my home country. What is the shortest safest absence period not to ruin the 5 years required for citizenship? (I know about the official 6 months – 1 year thing. I mean on a smaller scale, in terms of days and weeks.) And how does this mechanism work? Say, I’ve been away from the States for 3 weeks – do I need to add the amount of 3 weeks to those 5 years to compensate for my absence? I mean – each time I am away from the USA, do I reset the count until at some point I have uninterrupted 5 years of in-country residence to qualify for citizenship?
4. A few friends have agreed to host me and my family when we first arrive in the USA, for a few weeks or a couple of months. They all live in different states, though. So, if I initially enter the US state where my GC mailing address is (that’s the first friend on the hosting list), do I have to stick around and arrange my life in the same state? Or can I move around from state to state, even though my GC is being sent to the first address?
October 23, 2022 at 15:04
1. I’m not a Canadian travel agent.
2. I’m not a travel agent of any country in particular.
3. If all trips are less than 6 months the counter does not reset, BUT there are citizenship formula websites, so check that.
4. You can do whatever you want.

Hello dear Brit,
I have a question about filling entry 2024.
I have three daughters, one of them, 19 years old, is already married. They (my married doughter and his husband) also plan to submit an entry of their own.
Do I also have to include her in my application entry? Or only other two doughters?
Kind regards, George
October 23, 2022 at 15:06
Only the other two.

Hello,
My case number is EU24×××
I am already in the U.S witha F1 visa which expires on OCT 2023. I got the second letter to apply for Adjustement of Status.
1) Do I sent the documents when visa number gets active? Meaning that when visa bulletin gets to 24 000?
2) I have planned a trip to France for this December so in 1month and half. Will I be able to get back to U.S in January with my F1 visa?
I am worried that if I leave the country I might lose my F1 status.
3) Is the Adjustment of Status considered active the moment I send the application and forms?
Thank you for your help. I am trying to figure out if I should travel out of USA or not.
October 23, 2022 at 15:11
1. Yes – you can send them when the VB announces your number.
2. That is a question about the F1, it has nothing to do with the DV win.
3. Once you file the I-485.
Read this about AOS.
https://forums.immigration.com/threads/dv-2023-aos-adjustment-of-status-only.345837/
October 24, 2022 at 02:30
Is it possible to get the 2nd letter without paying the DV fee or filing DS 260? Its has to do with certain types of visa that they get an email about AOS?
Thank you
October 24, 2022 at 05:20
You are very confused. Study the link I gave you.
October 16, 2022 at 18:05
Hello Simon,
I’m from Sri lanka. our passports have only the Surname and Other names.(Surname : Britain ,Other names : Londons Simon John).how should I fill name on DV application. October 23, 2022 at 15:12
First name :Londons , Middle name : Simon John
October 16, 2022 at 20:36

October 17, 2022 at 06:16
i and my wife are about to divorce but my wife is reluctant to sign the divorce certificate even though i the husband have legal evidence why i wants to divorce her. Now I also wants to enter DV2024 Lottery For USA and i don’t wants to do the entry together with my wife i only wants to do it together with my children. All other written are being done on the divorce certificate its only my wife’s signatory that is delaying the process. my question is that
1. can i go ahead to do the DV entry with my kids alone leaving my wife out even though we have not got any legal divorce certificate yet?
2. if i am selected in the DV lottery and the divorce is still not completed will i not be denied visa because my wife was not included
October 23, 2022 at 15:17
1. No
2. You would be denied because the divorce is not final.
October 17, 2022 at 08:12
Hi Simon
We had our interview cancelled and the embassy said this
“ We still are experiencing technical issues
concerning DV cases for 2023 which started on
October this year. We will contact you to
schedule the appointment as soon as this has
been cleared.”
Have you ever seen this type of situation for an embassy before? Just wondering on your take on what the technical issues are or if you have any experience on this happening at the start of the dv lottery processing periods for certain embassies?
Thanks
October 17, 2022 at 10:39
Which embassy is this?
October 23, 2022 at 15:18
Yes I have seen that happen before. It is fixed now.
October 18, 2022 at 02:56
Dear Simon,
We are winner of DV2023. Is it okay to apply DV2024 lottery and any impact on DV2023 selection process ?
Thank you?
October 23, 2022 at 15:19
Yes you can apply, no problem.
October 24, 2022 at 16:01
Hi brit
Some one filled my ds 260 and filled a wrong information as married .
I emailed kcc to re open the form and corrected the form to single and re submitted
But what surprises me is that the derivative form appears down on my case number when I log into ceac yet on principle applicant that derivative (spouse) is not mentioned.
October 24, 2022 at 20:59
That is normal. Once added, you cannot remove the DS260 of a derivative.
October 18, 2022 at 09:04
Hello Brit,
thanks for your help. I have a question, I am going to apply for DV 2024 and I have questions about my last name and my family’s. We all have more than one last and first names. In our official German documents (IDs and passports) all our last names are listed like this:
First-/Given name: Pedro GivenName2
Last-/Surname: Surname1 Surname2 Surname3
There is no such thing as middle names in our documents. How should we fill out the application? Like our documents (a) or like (b)?
a) First-/Given name: Pedro GivenName2
Last-/Surname: Surname1 Surname2 Surname3
or
b) First name: Pedro
Middle name: GivenName2 Surname1 Surname2
Last name: Surname3
Thank you so much for your work!
Cheers, Pedro
October 23, 2022 at 15:38
I’m not an expert on German names, perhaps someone will comment.
In German, a surname is called the “Nachname” or “Familienname.”
You can check the passport to see how it is treated.
October 18, 2022 at 10:26
Dear BritSimon,
I am trying to check my entrant at https://dvprogram.state.gov/ESC/CheckStatus.aspx and I’m constantly getting the message: Please enter the code as you see or hear it.
It gives this error on captcha no matter what you insert. If all fields are correct including captcha it gives this error or if I inserted totally wrong data.
I could login many many times before and check since I’m 2023 selectee. This started since the beginning of 2024 lottery. I am still able to access my ds260 smoothly and successfully.
You previously told me that the others also reported the same, but I really wonder how a selectee could check his 2nl. It is abnormal that an official site still has such problem for two weeks. Is that only for me?
Please advise
October 19, 2022 at 12:15
I have the same issue.
I think it’s a general issue
October 23, 2022 at 15:39
It is fixed now.
October 18, 2022 at 10:44
Hi all, This is for a friend. She is trying to log in to EDV to check status for 2023, but she does not get into the page after hitting the authentication button. Could you pl advice? Is anybody experiencing this?
October 23, 2022 at 15:39
It is fixed now.
October 18, 2022 at 11:24
Yes many have this problem so am I. I sent an email to KCC. This is their reply: “Our Diversity Visa (DV) servers are continuing to experience high volume, and many users are having difficulty reaching the site. We are working to resolve the issue, and we encourage DV2023 entrants to check back later if they are unable to access the site.”
I hope this helps.
October 23, 2022 at 15:40
It is fixed now.
October 19, 2022 at 02:25
Hello Simon,
I’m a winner in DV2023. AS6xxx. I found that I had entered a wrong passport number (had entered the passport request application number instead) in the entry form but I have filled and submitted the DS260 with the correct passport number. Will this be a reason to a refusal at the interview?
October 23, 2022 at 15:43
No
October 19, 2022 at 02:40
Hi Simon,
Can two family members apply for the greencard, if spouse is included in the application? As we are using the spouse photo in the application, can she apply seperately using the same photo and details?
October 23, 2022 at 15:43
A husband can apply with the wife as a derivative, and the wife can also apply with the husband as a derivative. Same photos.
October 19, 2022 at 15:32
Dear Simon,
My wife wishes to change her surname and take mine. Is it possible at some point, considering that we have already got our immigration visas and are entering the USA in a month’s time? To me, it sounds like a very complicated process, since our current names are already in the database and on so many documents. Is it realistic at all?
October 19, 2022 at 16:23
not realistic at all. you have enough things on your plate. Get settled in the US first and then you can think about that.
October 23, 2022 at 15:44
Yes. It is normal. People get married all the time and do that process. No need to change the visas, just discuss with the officer at the POE.
October 19, 2022 at 18:49
hi brit,
I’m a dv2023 winner I have 6 children , 4 of them are mine and 2 are stepchildren from my husband
1-should I list all of the 6 in my ds260 and my husband ds260 or just list 6 on my husband form and 4 on mine?
2- 2 of my 4 children are above 21 but they are planning to get to USA through student visas in 2024. in my ds260 under there names I chose that they are not coming with me to USA and they are not joining me later since they are older than 21 and they are not part of my DV application and they are Appling for a different type of visa . is that correct? or should I say they are joining me later since they may be getting their visas?
October 23, 2022 at 15:48
1. All 6, both of you.
2. They would not be on your DV case, and you should not say joining you later on your form.
October 20, 2022 at 03:04
Hi brit;
I am DV2023 WINNER. recently i encountered difficulty checking my status at https://dvprogram.state.gov/ESC/Default.aspx. When i enter all my informations, the authentication part always RETURNS the message :”Please enter the code as you see or hear it.” I wonder of there is anyone else out there who encountered the same problem? or is it a systems problem. Thanks in advance.
October 23, 2022 at 15:48
It is fixed now.
October 20, 2022 at 06:07
Hi Britsimon sir,

Host and Sponsonser state are different..
Please reply me sir Im in Big Trouble..
My case no is AS19×××
October 23, 2022 at 19:48
No problem
October 20, 2022 at 10:44
if the applicant has two wife and all of them have eligibility requirements
Can they include there husband to there application ?
And husband also apply for himself and include one of his wife to his application ?
October 23, 2022 at 19:52
Polygamy is not legal in the USA, so you can only enter the lottery with the first wife.
October 20, 2022 at 11:16
Hi Brit, i concern about my dv 2024 entry. I applied as Unmarried and got 2 successful confirmation numbers which one done my me and the other done by my brother that I didn’t know he did it for me. He said he used the same photo I just took the other day with his email. But I used that photo and my own email.
Will I be automatically disqualified in this case? Or will I be unselected in the next stage for the final random selection? Thanks for your help.
October 23, 2022 at 19:53
Their photo recognition software should disqualify both entries.
October 24, 2022 at 13:11
So, you mean the both entries will never go to the random selection process since the software detects the same photo that will be done in the next step?
If it is because of the same photo used that make them disqualified, I am wondering if I still have time to re-enter it again using a new different photo?
thanks for your response.
October 24, 2022 at 20:58
Don’t enter again!!!
The software they use will find matching photos and does a good job of facial recognition (unmatched photos of the same person).
October 20, 2022 at 11:21
Hi Simon. I am an EU selectee for DV2023. I completed and submitted my DS-260 a few months ago and just had one question about the summary page. Under the “IV Application” column it just says “completed”. When I hover over this it displays the message “The IV Application (form DS-260) has been submitted for this applicant. It will be reviewed when you have submitted all supporting documentation”.
Just wanted to check if this is a normal message to receive? And if so, does it just change whenever my case number become current and they review my application?
Just want to make sure I am not missing any steps. Thanks!
October 23, 2022 at 19:54
Normal. Now you wait.
October 20, 2022 at 12:51
Hi Brit! thanks for helping averybody! Unfortunately,I made a mistake! I wrote: firstname/middlename/surname in the space of surname/firstname/middlename. Shoud I make this application again?
October 23, 2022 at 19:54
No. If selected you will fix it later.
October 20, 2022 at 17:23
Hi Britt Simon, thank you very much for your help and information in advance. DV 2018 I am lucky that time I got a lot of information from you and because of that I am in USA today. Thanks again. Britt I made a mistake yesterday when I applied for my sister’s DV 2024. I sent the same application twice, the first one was successful and the confirmation number was sent to me, I lost the confirmation number so I sent the same application again to find the number. How do I solve this problem or is it rejected? I will wait for your reply as soon as possible.
October 20, 2022 at 21:16
Hi Brit
I have been trying to check my status at the ESC page but it never gets through the catchphrase. It always returns “Please enter the code as you see or hear it”, although I enter it correctly.
I wonder if this is happening to everybody ????
Thank you.
October 23, 2022 at 19:57
It is fixed now.
October 20, 2022 at 21:31
Hi Simon,
Thanks for all the help and guidance.
Question: we have entered the states , do we need to fill out any forms for the green card arrival now or we just wait it to get delivered? We received our socials already.
Thanks
October 23, 2022 at 19:57
Just wait (assuming you paid the $220 fee).
October 24, 2022 at 23:43
Yup done that
October 20, 2022 at 22:28

That’s cool. One of the earliest of the year. Best of luck for the move!
October 21, 2022 at 02:27
Hi Simon
my wife is in the US seeking asylum, I won the 2022 but got an interview very late in fact was approved on the deadline days, now that it’s closed when I arrive in the US what do I need to do for her since her asylum case is still pending for an interview.
October 23, 2022 at 20:23
Check with a lawyer.
October 21, 2022 at 14:25
Hi Simon,
After submitting my application on 25/05/2022, me & my spouse had to move to Malaysia with work visa for a year (Aug 2022 – Aug 2023).
Q1 – Since we’ve never lived anywhere else other than our home, we entered “NO” as the reply to “Have you lived anywhere other than this address since the age of sixteen?” question. Do I need to edit and re-submit the application forms?
Q2 – Do we need to update the “Work/Education/Training Information” section as well?
Case Number – 2023AS00017xxx
Country – Sri Lanka
October 23, 2022 at 20:25
Yes – unlock and correct.
October 28, 2022 at 08:58
Noted. Thanks for your response. I unlocked and updated the forms. Couple of more questions to ask Brit.
Q1 – As said above, me & husband had move to Malaysia for a year. My husband is the one who got the job opportunity, and I got the dependent pass to move in with him. For the moment I’m jobless but I’m looking for a job. If I get a job here, do I need to unlock the DS-260 form again and update the “Work/Education/Training Information” section?
If yes, based on my case number (2023AS00017xxx), is there a deadline to stop unlocking & updating the DS-260 form?
Q2 – In Sri Lanka we get a card where childhood vaccinations (from birth) will be recorded. Though my husband has taken the requested vaccinations, he has lost the card and due to that there’s no proof to show. Will this be an issue?
October 30, 2022 at 16:44
1. No
2. No
October 21, 2022 at 16:09
Hi Simon
When your interview is scheduled for a certain month (in my case October) and it is moved by the embassy to November what happens with the visa allocated? They said in the email that our visa number was valid for October so they’ll have to request another? Does this mean the visa will take longer to be issued? Thanks
October 23, 2022 at 20:29
Yes, probably just a short delay.
October 22, 2022 at 15:36
Hi,
Husband entered Dv 2024 application as single when he wasn’t married, now he got married is there any harm in entering for spouse ?
October 23, 2022 at 20:31
No – but for himself he should only have one entry.
October 22, 2022 at 15:42
Hi BritSimon,
We I inserted my entrant in October 2022 I set education level University Degree. Although at that time I started my master courses. I thought only to add completed Bachelor or Master. Well, does that affect my case since I am a selectee of 2023?
Regards,
Ridwan
October 22, 2022 at 15:52
Hello Simon,
I just submitted my entry to the DV 2024.
I wanted clarity on when the lottery happens.
Will the lottery’s outcome be the selection that will be known in May 2023?
Or is the lottery going to be after the visa/interview process?
Appreciate your services!
October 23, 2022 at 20:32
In May you find out if you are selected for further processing. The result is not guaranteed because you have to go through the interview, meet the requirements and so on.
October 22, 2022 at 16:04
Hello Sir. how are?
my question is this:
I’m dv2023 winner and currently waiting for my interview details letter .but i want to change my interview location from Dejibouty to Saudi Arabia.
how can i do that?
October 23, 2022 at 20:33
Your interview will be scheduled based on where you live.
October 22, 2022 at 23:32
Hello, I am a dv2023 winner and I just got my interview for December. I know that I need to take some documents with me to the interview however I wanted to know if the diplomas and transcripts need to be translated in English or can I keep them in their original language (French) ?
October 23, 2022 at 20:35
This is covered in the instructions. The documents must be in English OR the official language of the country where you interview.
October 23, 2022 at 04:02
Hi Brit, Thank you so much for your help.
I would like to fill out the form DS-260 for DV2023, but I’m currently in USA with a Student visa.
1. Can you please tell me where should I make the medical exam and where I will make the interview?
2. In the winner letter they wrote in the top of the letter my name and my USA address, but I’m the bottom, they are wrote the embassy of my original country.
So should I ask in some way to change it to the USA address?
Thank You!!!
October 23, 2022 at 20:38
You are not being clear. You first need to decide whether you will process via Consular Processing (abroad), or whether you prefer to process in the USA.
The link below has a great comparison of the two methods, and lots of AOS info if you decide to go that route.

October 23, 2022 at 06:46
Hi Britsimon,
I got my greencard lottery in 2020, and in 2021 me , my wife and daughter did attend an interview after it has been rescheduled three times due Covid- 19. We did our interview and only me and my daughter was granted the visa as for my wife visa was not process as has reach the cut of date 30th of September 2021. The officer advised that you can lodge a spouse application form I-130, the processing of that case is current(12 months), however, we ( me and my daughter) came to usa, lodge her applications and it’s being taking so long. My only concerns is my daughter to be reunited with her mom. Is there anything to expedite this process.
Thank you.
Raj
October 23, 2022 at 20:38
I don’t know. Talk to a lawyer. In my understanding that process can take years.
October 23, 2022 at 07:51
Hey Simon. I just found out that I should have gone with the country of birth and not country of nationality when I applied in my entry last year. But since my country of birth and nationality are both eligible for the dv, is it okay that I went with the country of my nationality? Thank you for you time.
October 23, 2022 at 20:39
It depends on the two countries involved.
October 23, 2022 at 09:20
Hi Brett Simon
I had a problem with block Ds260 and my request was processed by Kcc and they directed me to the consulate in my country
If I sent a Ds260 in November and my case number is 16k
When will my visa interview be?
Greetings and thanks for the support
October 23, 2022 at 11:05
Hi simon, im really scared and confused right now. A topographical mistake on my name. Instead of Blamo Augustine i wrote Blama Augustine. Will that be a problem for my success. Thank you.
October 23, 2022 at 20:40
If you get selected you will correct it then.
October 23, 2022 at 19:57
Hi brit simon
I have question sir
I make mistake for the day and month i born in original dv entry can i be disqualified at the time of interview
October 23, 2022 at 20:44
You will correct it if you get selected.
October 23, 2022 at 20:40
I don’t know exactly.
October 23, 2022 at 10:10
Hello brit
I have a question my entrance pepper I entered a wrong birthdate should I have a chance to correct the date if I have been selected
October 23, 2022 at 20:40
Yes
October 23, 2022 at 11:59
Good day Simon I’ve been watching your videos online there’s something I wanted ask you but I don’t have your contact or email but I think I can write it here. I want to apply for US visa and come there for my next holidays but when I login into the site I don’t know which one to apply
October 23, 2022 at 20:41
I only answer questions about DV lottery.
October 23, 2022 at 18:51
Hello Brit,
1. My interview is in December, we are 5 people in total, and 4 of us are in the process of renewing our passports since they would not be valid for 6 months after the interview. The principal applicant is the only one who didn’t renew the passport. Would it be a problem for us derivatives if we go to the embassy with new passports only informing them at the interview?
2. For everyone other than me the name formatting has been Last Name, First Name Middle Name, I made a mistake in my DS260 writing Last Name, First Name Middle Name Last Name. It cannot be changed now since the interview is already scheduled. Will this cause an issue for me specifically? or would it be fine.
Thanks for your time.
October 23, 2022 at 20:45
1. No
2. It will be up to the CO.
October 23, 2022 at 20:31
Hi BritSimon
I am a dv2023 winner but i did double entry, should i go for interview or quit???
October 23, 2022 at 20:44
Up to you.
October 23, 2022 at 21:48
I am afraid of being rejected, is it possible to get visa in such cases??
October 24, 2022 at 01:01
If they know you entered twice they will disqualify you. That’s what happens when you cheat.
October 24, 2022 at 02:03
Unfortunately I didn’t know it’ll cause me Disqualified, it was undeliberately happened, on the last page of confirmation when i wanted to get print out, due to some errors(registered by mobile)i pressed the back button and it took me to the previous page of confirmation page and when I pressed the submit button again an error came(you are Disqualified due to double entry). It was the story of my Double entry, it wasn’t cheating.
Thanks for your time

That is NOT what you read. The system stopped you from entering again.
October 25, 2022 at 15:53
Hi Mr. Simon, if system stops double entries, how the people still submit another entry?
October 26, 2022 at 02:44
By changing the details sufficiently.

Im a 2023 winner. If spouse has drugs criminal of police clearance report will it effect to main applicant’s profile?? and what will happen to spouse’s visa??? . Will it be visa refusal??. Thanks
October 24, 2022 at 20:54
It should not affect the principal, but depending on the seriousness of the crime it could cause ineligibility for the spouse.
October 25, 2022 at 01:20
Actually It is not a serious case. A small fine was paid. Does it affect depends on the case???
Will the visa officer give spouse a chance to correct this mistake? Or will the visa officer directly reject the visa without looking at anything?
October 26, 2022 at 02:42
They will consider the details of the case.

Hello Brit, I want to thank you for providing us this platform and all your valuable informations regarding the dv process.
I have a question:
At the question about the number of educational institutions at secondary level or above attended I think I have made a mistake but I’m not sure. I have listed only the high school (2010-2015). Since 2016 I’m enrolled in a university but the first 2 years I studied engeenering and then I switch to economics but the university is the same. Since I’m still completing my studies I put the university informations in the current occupation. But what about the 2 years I studied engineering? Should I have listed that in the question of institutions attended despite being the same university as my current occupation?
October 24, 2022 at 20:55
No need to overthink it since it is the same university.

Hi! I won the lottery in 2020 for DV2021 and due to lockdowns etc I never got my interview time and
1). I am assuming I lost it?
2). Am I able to reapply for this year DV 2024 ?
Thank you! 🙂
October 24, 2022 at 20:57
1. Maybe. There is a lawsuit which is being appealed that might save some DV2020 cases and perhaps some DV2021. I have written about that extensively.
2. Yes

Hi Brit,
I am a DV2023 selectee residing in the USA for the next few months with CN 2023AF36xxx. I requested to KCC to have my case transferred for CP and I initially chose AOS, they had approved now as I read the informations on the government DV lottery app and the email that says I have to request for KCC to unclock my DS-260 so that I can update my form; the current address on the DS-260 form determines your interview location and mine is the USA address, I don’t know how to change that as my current address is still in USA but I want to do Consular Processing.
Please need some clearance.
Thank you so much for your help
October 24, 2022 at 20:59
Email KCC and let them know you want to switch to CP and which country you will go to.
October 24, 2022 at 22:39
Thank you Britt.
KCC sent me an email that my interview location has been to changed from Adjustment of Status to Kinshasa. And they added that I need to request that KCC unclock my DS-260, so that I can update my application with my new address.
My present address is still in the USA, can i still update my present address to that of my country even if I am not there presently there yet?
I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and expertise.
October 26, 2022 at 02:41
If you haven’t moved there don’t pretend you have. You are simply saying you want CP even though you live in the USA.

Thank you so much Brit for your responses. I was in confusion and worries about this address situation now I see light to it. I truly appreciate you. God bless you and keep you in Jesus name. Amen ????
