DV interview questions
This question comes up often – what are the typical DV interview questions? People are nervous about the interview as if they are going to be asked some really difficult questions or be held for an hour being questioned like a prisoner!!!! I have known people who want to prepare and practice their answers to all possible questions – just to be safe!
Well RELAX! The interview is usually a complete anticlimax. In a typical Embassy appointment there will be two or three stages. It isn’t always like this, but this will give an idea.
First you will be called to a window and asked to present some minimum documentation (Passports, birth certs etc). You will be asked to pay for the fee ($330) and that might be at a cashiers window.
Then you will be called for the actual interview which will typically last a very few minutes – sometimes less than 2 minutes!
The CO will look at your paperwork, and may request additional documents. They then may ask general questions such as:-
“Where did you study?”
“What work do you normally do?”
“Where will you live in the USA?”
“Who will you live with in the USA?”
“What is your relationship with the people you will live with?”
For most people that is the most that will be asked – and they are not looking to trick you or catch you out. If something needs more explanation or documentation they may go into that – but again it isn’t normally in depth. If you have recently married, you can expect some questions about your marriage (where you met, what trips you have taken together and so on).
Obviously the best answers are the most real/honest answers. Don’t try and impress the CO or say what you think they want to hear. As long as you meet the requirements and have followed the instructions the visa will be approved!!!

Dear Mr Brit I was at my interview today in Ghana Accra I submitted WASSC Certificate which is equivalent to 12 years of elementary and secondary education in the united states and also the minimum requirement, but I was denied my DV visa on (INA) SECTION 212(a)(5)(A). Is there anything I can do about it
March 4, 2020 at 23:11
It is important what subjects and pass levels you achieve. It seems like they reviewed what you had and decided you were not qualified. There is no formal appeal process – so you can’t “demand” that they review the case.

June 12, 2020 at 11:59
I don’t know how they will judge that.
June 16, 2020 at 11:12
I was selected for further processing in this year’s Lottery. But the problem is I payed with my girlfriend and I used her last name and she’s the head.
Now all my documents are in my real name. What should I do?
June 16, 2020 at 18:38
Sounds suspicious frankly – did you enter multiple times?
Obviously there is no justification to have played with a false name – so refusal is likely.
June 20, 2020 at 21:56

June 26, 2020 at 18:05
Hey @Britsimon. In my Ds-260 form that I previously submitted, I click on the check mark that I was assist during the process of submission. Will the embassy have problem with me on that? And secondly, on my high school documents and my WAEC document, my middle has been spelled out but on my passport my middle name isn’t been spell out. Do I have problem with that or what?
June 27, 2020 at 04:56

2. Not normally a problem.
June 27, 2020 at 00:06
Hi Simon, I am a 2021 AF 30**** selectee. I have filed and submitted form 260 with interview location in the country where I currently reside. I’m yet to fill in details for my family members who reside back in my home country. Can we do the interview at different locations? If not then can I request for the interview location to be changed to my home country, which then may mean travelling back for the interview when it is scheduled? Thanks
June 27, 2020 at 05:21
You interview together
July 2, 2020 at 10:38
Hello Brit, I don’t know if I can fill the DS-260 form while waiting for my family passport.

You need a passport number.
July 7, 2020 at 16:30
Can I complete the DS 260 form now, while waiting for embassy/consulate to reopen. I was selected for further processing in the 2021 Dv.

Ghana routinely reject people who have not met the minimum education standards which should include the core subjects.

On my first entry i didn’t put my child because i was in my process of divorce and i was not sure that my spouse will allow me to put her in my first entry. what is your advise before attending interview(am DV2021 with CN AF81***).
August 28, 2020 at 19:47
Don’t attend the interview. You will be wasting your time and money since the omission of a qualified derivative from the initial entry causes certain denial.
September 5, 2020 at 17:52

I want to know the Entry date for DV 2022.
September 23, 2020 at 01:18
September 28, 2020 at 21:18
I have previously been in the US on a J1 visa, for which I didn’t pay taxes (THB it wasn’t 100% clear if I had to or not). Do you think that would be a problem when the interview comes? Is there a question in the application form that asks about this?
September 29, 2020 at 02:34
IN CP it would not come up, but if it did, take responsibility for your decisions.
September 29, 2020 at 11:07
Got it, I will. Thanks for taking the time to read this and reply!
October 8, 2020 at 14:42

Hello Mr. Brit. My question is: I was born in Brazil in 1961, two years after my mom went to live There with my father. They were both natives of Spain, so I’m Spanish Citizen. The problem is my father was living legaly there before my mom arrive. So Can I apply for DV lottery or not. Thank you.
November 2, 2020 at 04:55
No – it sounds like it would be hard to prove your family were there temporarily.
November 9, 2020 at 11:16
General question: so my mother is Irish and I have got an Irish passport. But I was born in the UK. I can I apply based on my Irish citizenship?
November 9, 2020 at 14:34
Eligibility is based on place of birth. There is an exception if you can prove your parents were in the UK temporarily, and neither parent was born in the UK.
November 9, 2020 at 17:58
The drop down option on form says parent not patents. It implies at least one parent
November 9, 2020 at 18:12
Regardless of what you think it implies, I am telling you how the rule is written/implemented. Here is the wording from 9 FAM, which is unambiguous as you can read.
(b) (U) A child born in a non-qualifying country in which neither parent was born nor was a resident at the time of the child’s birth, may claim the birthplace of either parent;
November 10, 2020 at 07:32
This confirms what it implies “birthplace of either parent “. Key word here is either. Secondly I checked this morning with the Consulate , it can be one parent or both. It’s not both
November 10, 2020 at 17:50
You are not paying attention. I never said it was both. You are arguing a point I am not making.
What I am saying (repeatedly) is that you can charge to your mothers country of birth but TWO things need to be true.
1. Your parents were not residents of the UK at the time of your birth (normally meaning they were there for business reasons).
2. That the other parent (your father in your case) was not born in the UK.
It’s point 2 you keep ignoring – and maybe that doesn’t apply if your father was born in some other country, but if he was born in the UK you cannot use the missionary exception.
I really hope that is clear now.
November 13, 2020 at 00:09
HI Mr Simon, does it mean if someone played it for you, without a passport, your are automatically disqualified??
November 13, 2020 at 01:56
If you weren’t entitled to an exception for the passport, yes, that is my expectation. However, we have not yet seen the new rule being enforced because interviews have not started yet.
November 16, 2020 at 18:17
Hi Simon I play this year for de lottery 2022 and I lost my passport just 2 weeks on the 28 October.now I’m about to apply for a new passport. In case I’m qualify for dv visa will I be disqualify for the change of my passport number? I’m from drc in congo once you lost your passport you must apply for a new one with different number. Thank you
November 16, 2020 at 21:40
You should be able to show proof of your old passport.
November 18, 2020 at 09:41
Hi Simon, i played this 2022 Lottery, during my senior secondary education back in 2004 i failed in maths and english, but at the moment i have done a program in covid 19 contact tracing which i have passed, I hope i will be permitted to proceed should in case i am selected for the 2022 DV lottery
November 18, 2020 at 14:15
Your covid tracing course won’t help you meet the requirement.
November 22, 2020 at 23:59
Hello Simon, what could be the additional documents that the CO may request during the interview?
November 23, 2020 at 00:20
The standard documents are listed in the instructions. Anything else would be case specific.
December 14, 2020 at 21:14
I’m a DV 2021 winner with case number AF51XXX but KCC has not asked me to send my documents. Should I give them a reminder or wait?
December 14, 2020 at 21:49
You should wait. Your number won’t be current for months, so why be impatient?
January 13, 2021 at 10:00
i am dv2021 selectee, i have filled DS260 form and sumited . later on i received a email to submit my suporting document. in the the ds260 for i indicated the i am going to live with in the usa including his address.
my question is, should the person fill the afideavit of suport form I-134?
and how do we submit it?
January 14, 2021 at 02:58
Read the FAQ please as that has info about the I-134.
March 31, 2021 at 08:18
Hi Brit I have submitted my documentS with request from KCC as you said on your last the last time this was the the reply from KCC (The Kentucky Consular Center (KCC) has received your email and is currently processing your documents. This email address, [email protected], is only used for applicants to provide the Kentucky Consular Center (KCC) with documents required to continue processing Diversity Visa applications. [email protected] does not respond to inquiries. If you have any Diversity Visa related questions, please email [email protected] with your case number, complete name, and date of birth, as entered on your original entry.
Document processing generally takes 3-6 weeks. Please give us time to complete that process before sending questions about your application.)
June 5, 2021 at 09:28
Hi Brit,I’m dv winner 2022 with cn Af20xxx. Could it be a risk number?
June 5, 2021 at 15:08
The number is not bad, but the more crucial question is really what will be the impact of Covid on embassies interviewing etc.
August 25, 2021 at 15:20
Is it possible to be put under AP during DV interview, if a person has been put under AP previously for visit visa (for 5 months, but then was issued)?
Just a little anxious and nervous since since the fiscal year is almost over..
August 28, 2021 at 05:24
June 3, 2022 at 05:59
I am Congolese national, living legally in SA and a DV2022 winner, submitted DS260 but was not required to send supporting documents. Now I am scheduled for an interview:
1. My spouse’s current passport is different from the one filled on DS260 and has a temporary visa. Will cause a problem? What document can I have to justify that change? Or Must I unlock DS260 to make the update?
2. My children are born and live in SA and are waiting for their SA temporary visa to be issued. Will that hinder or be a problem?
June 4, 2022 at 14:17
1. No problem. No need to update the DS260.
2. No problem.
June 4, 2022 at 17:42
Thanks for your prompt reply.
1. Can my sponsor be different from the host in my DS260?
2. If the CO asked me ‘who is your host?’ Should I tell him about the sponsor who filled i134 or the host who is in the ds260?
June 4, 2022 at 18:08
2. You would answer based on the truth.
June 7, 2022 at 19:12
1. I’m not about to find from the instructions where the sponsor role is. Will you please send me the link?
2. On May 25, 2022, KCC sent me a letter for my interview but the status is still in transit yet KCC instructed me to book my interview with consulate but my case number is not yet available. What should I have to do?
June 9, 2022 at 22:30
1. I don’t know what link you are referring to.
2. If you have a 2NL you already have an interview but probably need to create a profile with their courier. Follow their instructions.
August 8, 2022 at 03:22
What does the status “Rejected” mean yet the consular officer instructed me to submit additional documents after the interview?
August 8, 2022 at 03:51
You mean refused. A refusal of that type is a 221(g) refusal where you can correct something and be issued or finally refused later.
August 8, 2022 at 05:36
sorry I meant to say “Refused” and I found this link https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/visa-information-resources/administrative-processing-information.html explaining in details. Thx
August 31, 2022 at 08:34
The status changed from REFUSED to ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESSING and now it’s ISSUED
1. For some reasons, I will not stay in the stated I put in DS260, how can I change it?
2. If I give another address at the port of entry, will that cause any discrepancy or affect me?
3. Can I pay the green card fees after my arrival in US?
4. What are the things regarding Security Number, Green Card, etc to do after my arrival?
September 5, 2022 at 20:39
1. At the POE
2. That’s ideal.
4. It’s automatic (assuming you asked for that in the DS260).
August 31, 2022 at 20:17
Hi sir. I am dv 2023 winner. From Sri Lanka but my interview scheduled in UAE.(abu dhabi )My question are
01) do I need to attested my documents from UAE government
02 ) how can I change host details in my ds 260 ? because I need to add my sponsor details as my host.
03) in case if I can’t change my host details when CO will asking about host whom details should I tell.
Thanks your kindness
September 5, 2022 at 20:45
1. Please read the embassy specific instructions.
2. Do that at the interview.
3. See 2.
