OK, so I am getting overwhelmed with a flood of 2017 selectees with very basic questions. Let me try and address the most frequent ones here in the hope that people will read this. If you ask a question and I give you a link to this page, it is to indicate that your question can be answered by reading this page and using some common sense.
By the way. VERY IMPORTANT. If you have to ask me more than one question – please NUMBER the questions to make my work easier.
Is there a deadline to submit my DS260?
There is no official deadline to submit your DS260. People will continue to submit DS260s for DV2017 cases well into 2017. Submissions as late as April or perhaps even May of next year will still get processed in time.
How long does it take to process the DS260?
Based on the past 2 years (since the DS260 was introduced), we can be pretty confident in the following info.
The actual processing time of the DS260 is quite short – probably 3 to 4 weeks. However, because of the volume of DS260s that are received starting at the beginning of May, a backlog builds up very quickly. You can think of this as a queue. In the two past years, that queue or backlog has meant that DS260s were taking 4 to 5 months to process (obviously most of that time being spent waiting). So – for those that submit their DS260 in the first week or two after the initial draw, the processing time will be quite short. Then a backlog will build and processing times will build up to 4 or 5 month delay. Then, early next year, processing times will reduce again to being a few weeks.
Does every DS260 take the same time to process?
No. There is some background checks required on each case that vary according to the situation of the selectees. The precise details of the checks are not published, but we can guess they are mainly about ensuring security of the USA. That means they communicate with agencies and foreign governments about the details you provide on the DS260. Some countries co-operate with the USA, some don’t. In countries that don’t co-operate you can expect DS260 will take longer. So, some cases are very simple, and some not so simple. If a selectee was raised in Western Europe, works in an office and has never travelled to certain high risk countries we can expect the DS260 processing (once the case is ACTUALLY processed, not queued) to be quick. If on the other hand someone has travel history around certain countries in the middle East or lists their work as “Nuclear weapons specialist”, well they can expect the US government to take longer over those checks.
So – never assume that all DS260s submitted on the same day will complete processing on the same day. There will be variations.
When will I be interviewed? Is my number safe?
OK, first of all. Processing timing is mainly based on your case number, and where that number is ranked within each region. So – if you are case number 900 in OC region for example (where the highest case number will probably be around 1000) you are near the back of the line and can expect a long wait before being interviewed. However, that same number in AF region (where the highest case number could be 50,000 to 60000) would be very low. A low number means the case could be interviewed earlier.
HOWEVER, if a selectee with a low case number submits their DS260 late, it is possible their case will not be scheduled until a later month than their case number would suggest. No case will be scheduled unless the DS260 has been processed. However, in the case of someone with a low number who missed their “current” month because of DS260 backlogs, their case will be scheduled once the DS260 is processed. In some cases people might actually want to use this delay to cause a later interview (for instance if someone wants to get married prior to interview).
When will KCC send the first 2NLs?
The first 2NLs (the interview notification) for DV2017 will go out in late August. That will be for cases that have been processed AND are current for October. Then 2NLs will come in a monthly schedule, also late in each month. So – late in September for November interviews and so on.
When are the visa bulletins published?
The visa bulletins are published around the 8th to the 15th of each month. If you call KCC they will always respond that it is released on the 15th. They are not “late” until the 16th. Usually I get people lamenting “the sky is falling” and “why are they so late” around the 10th or 11th. That will happen every month – and no matter how many times I explain, people are impatient.
How do KCC schedule the cases?
Roughly speaking all interviews are spread out over the year, starting in October and ending the following September. KCC release numbers via the visa bulletin to say which case numbers can be interviewed. Check out this article to understand how to read the visa bulletin.
KCC will increase the number made current on each region at a pace that ensures they have enough interviews to match the embassy capacity during each month.
So – to take an example. If OC had a highest case number of 1000, we could roughly expect to see that number increase by 100 each month. However, due to DS260 backlogs (remember no case can be scheduled UNTIL the DS260 is processed), KCC might release a higher number to start with (for October and November for instance) and slow down later. So – we might see OC start at 200 in October, be 350 in November and then increase by 50 to 75 each month for a while.
The same thing will happen in each region. This effect is going to be particularly pronounced in AF region where selectees typically take a long time to submit their forms. So – AF will start with a high VB number. Many will rejoice and say how fast things are moving and then those same people will be confused when the pace decreases later on. I have tried to explain this many times, but people just don’t seem to understand the point. It ends up being mysterious and frustrating. So – people need to be ready to be patient.
You can look at the historical visa bulletin numbers from previous years to get an idea how things work. However, every year is different, so I would suggest only taking a look at DV2016 or DV2015 to try and anticipate when your number will be scheduled for interview. Please do that rather than asking me to predict your interview date. Use some judgment and common sense to allow me to spend my time on people that need help with more critical questions.
To encourage people to look for themselves I have taken the 2015 and 2016 numbers and plotted them onto charts. So – look for your number in your region and you can guess roughly when your case will be ready for interview.

Dear brother, good evening from Ethiopia !
My CN is AF 197xx and I’m single in my original application still know but I got married on September 15/2016 and I can’t do anything in my original application still know because we don’t have marriage certificate and her education document is not ready yet , that’s why we can’t re-submit anything still now and I have planed to start her process after I go to U.S . Know my question is if they see marriage ring in my hand ,they will think I’m cheating ? second , If I let them I’m married man know ( simply for information , not to consider in current process ) ,In order to make the process very easy for her in the future . What do you advice me ? when I disclose that information for them during my interview time , the only evidence in my hand is only church marriage certificate ! I know they don’t accept that one as an evidence ,only they accept municipal marriage certificate ! …. please let me know your advice . In fact I’m working for U.S Embassy Addis Ababa here in Ethiopia ! If i do what i said above can create problem in my process ??
January 18, 2017 at 19:57
Not telling the truth will cause problems. The simplest way to deal with this is to get married legally now and include your spouse in your process. If you don’t do that you should at least tell them of the church marriage.
January 20, 2017 at 17:58
Than you for your quick response ! My fear is Delay If I include her know . as you know that VB for Ethiopia is around AF19200 & mine is around AF197xx. OK If I want to include know , I think KCC will finished there parts and most probably they will send my case for embassy here …..Sorry for asking repeatedly ! I think we will have our legal certificate until my interview date then if I take it both church and municipal(legal ) for my interview day , is that okay ? This all are for future consideration , not for current process !
January 20, 2017 at 18:40
It is very foolish to worry about delay – you should think about the simplest and safest method, not the fastest.

Hello Brit,
I called embassy in the morning and they gave me an appointment.
Thank you so much.
1-I got my medicals December 14,2016,when will be expiring?
Waiting to hear from you again.
God bless you.
January 19, 2017 at 14:41
Your medical will expire on June 14 and your visa will be set to expire at that time. So you have reduced the amount of time you have to move to the USA.
June 21, 2017 at 14:21
Hi Brit,
Thanks you for your invaluable words that obviously have been helpful for so many people out there.
My case number is 2018AS12XX. I processed my DS-260 online form right after the result was published and awaiting 2NLR update.
Me and my wife we r expecting our baby on somewhere in September of 2018. if I have visa interview with my spouse then how will the new born accompany?

January 20, 2017 at 03:51
Hi Brit,
I have few questions regarding DV lottery 2017 (EU 00024XXX) AOS
1) What should be the appropriate answer to question on DS-260
“Provide information on your last five U.S. visits:” Since my wife’s last arrival i.e. in 2015, she entered on F-2 and in October 2016 her status was changed to H4 with approval until Aug 2019. Should she put the total # of months from 2015 to 2019 as her length of stay?
2) Since she is on H-4 status now with an approval from USCIS having her I-94 expiry date extended until Aug 2019. Last stamped visa on her passport is F-2 and she has this H-4 approval from USCIS which is not stamped on her passport yet as she hasn’t traveled outside the US. Keeping this situation in mind what should she answer to the question in DS 260 “Provide the following information on your last U.S. visa”. Should we put H-4 or F-2 (stamped on passport).
3) Does unlocking our DS-260 put us back in the queue?
4) I have heard for AOS applicants KCC doesn’t schedule the interview instead we have to call USCIS to schedule the interview is that how it works?
5) If our DS-260 is not processed by the time our DV # is current, can we proceed with filing our AOS with USCIS?
Regards,
Sam

Look – you need to fill in the DS260 but it is not as important for AOS cases as CP cases. So just make your best judgements and move on.
About AOS you need to learn about the process and the I-485. Go to the link below. Read the spreadsheet linked on the first post and get to understand the process. If you still have questions – ask them there. I did AOS myself but it is specialized and the member Sm1smom is an expert in DV related AOS. She and that thread is all you need.

February 1, 2017 at 06:46
Hi BS Says,‘’The U.S. Department of State Electronic Diversity Visa Entrant Status Check for Diversity Visa Program for DV-2017 is available until September 30, 2017. The Entrant Status Check for DV-2016 applicants will remain open until September 30, 2016.’’- ESCpage
Is it still worth it to be checking after the first and second draw passed and you were not selected? Some times its frustrating checking checking and checking without any positive outcome
February 1, 2017 at 19:22
e will not be any further selectees drawn for DV2017.
February 5, 2017 at 10:05
Hi Briton
Here in ethiopia we cant make payment through internet so
How could I pay uscis fee here?
February 5, 2017 at 16:29
It can only be paid on the internet, so perhaps wait and pay it in the USA.
February 5, 2017 at 12:08
Hi Simon,I won the 2017 lottery, went for the interview and the ceac site reads “issued” yet, my visa hasn’t been sent to the pick up centre(DHL). VISA issued date is 12/01/2017. Please, how long does it take for the VISA to be ready for pick up after the issued date for three weeks is already gone.
Thank you.
February 5, 2017 at 16:25
Normally a week or two. Contact the embassy.
February 6, 2017 at 00:17
I will then. Thanks very much sire!
February 7, 2017 at 08:24
Hi, I see that there is a difference between the VB processing times here and the scheduled visa dates (https://britsimonsays.com/when-will-i-have-an-interview/). Is that because of the backlog? If so, how are you tracking the backlog between the VB dates and estimated interviews?
I have a number ending OC0009**, so I am hoping to be called in the April/May bulletin. But it seems from your charts that you think I will have to wait quite a long time to get an interview (if at all).
February 7, 2017 at 14:37
THe backlog is only a problem if you submitted your DS260 late. Did you?
February 7, 2017 at 18:17
Hi Simon
No I didn’t, I’m just wondering the reason for the discrepancy in the Oceania graphs between the visa becoming available in the bulletin on this page (estimated to April/May), and the estimated date of the interview (https://britsimonsays.com/when-will-i-have-an-interview/), which doesn’t really appear to happen at all for someone with a number in the OC900s.
February 7, 2017 at 12:55
Hi Simon,I called the Embassy via the numbers on the blue sheet given after a successful interview.I was informed that the Embassy will send me a Notification into my email when VISA is made available for pickup and the status will change from “Issued” to “Ready for pickup”. Is this true or implies to every selectee in different country please? Or is this their first time of initiating such directives Or would you advise me to visit the Embassy personally?
February 7, 2017 at 13:09
Hi Britsimon
I spoke with a Supervisor at NVC and she said our case is being being reviewed but not yet finished. Also give them a couple of days. She can’t see anything in the system only that our case is being reviewed.son please what do you think about this?
February 7, 2017 at 14:32
NVC don’t handle DV lottery cases.
February 7, 2017 at 14:31
CEAC does not have a status of “ready for pickup”. Perhaps they meant some other system.
February 7, 2017 at 21:34
Wow,so please Simon, after almost a month without the VISA though, the status shows “Issued”, is it true that I will be signaled in my mail when it’s ready for pickup or,do I need to personally go to the Embassy to request for it?
February 8, 2017 at 00:35
It depends on the embassy. Ask them.
February 8, 2017 at 13:35
Oh ok. Thnx very much Simon.
February 9, 2017 at 14:25
Mr simon how i inter or join in the dv 2017???
February 9, 2017 at 15:03
Entry is once a year – in October.
February 9, 2017 at 15:24
Hello Simon,
I submitted my DS-260 yesterday(quite late) and my case number is 2017EU000042xx.
When do you think I will receive my interview appointment? Would it be possible delay or change the interview date once received?
Thanks
February 9, 2017 at 15:40
I don’t know when you will get the interview date – But no earlier than June. Probably July or even August. Changing the date would be a bad idea – and in any case, do you already know you are fully busy in June, July and Audust???
Winning the DV lottery is a once in a lifetime event. I would think you would make a little time to attend the interview.
February 9, 2017 at 19:02
I understand.
I work on cruise ship and I will be away until August..so in case I will get the interview around that time it should be fine.
Thanks for the info!
February 9, 2017 at 19:08
You will get around 6 to 7 weeks notice of the appointment – so hopefully you can work around that. Just remember that visas can run out toward the end of the year, and embassies don’t always reschedule efficiently (so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a July interview pushed back to September).
February 13, 2017 at 03:29

Hi Britsimon
My interview will be tomorrow April 12. I live London England.
I have one question is the visa payment with £ pound or $ Dollar because the list I saw was in Dollar.
And wish me luck !!!
April 12, 2017 at 03:44
I think they take either currency.

Hi Brit, My case is 2017EU26XXX and I am seeing “CURRENT” for April and May. I have only received an email from KCC regarding adjustment of status (after original email about selection notice), but nothing regarding interview scheduling. I am not quite sure what my next step should be or if I should just wait for the email regarding interview. Please note that I currently reside in the US on working visa so my case is slightly different. Thanks for all your helpful information!!

If you are adjusting status (AOS), KCC do not schedule or process your case. You only submit the DS260 to them to let them know you are processing AOS. So – your process is entirely different. You are already current so you can submit your AOS package (I-485) now. If you don’t have any idea about this process – you should read the link below and go through the spreadsheet linked on the first post in that thread.

Hi Bristsimon
I need your help Bristsimon, my embassy appointment was on Wednesday in London. And during my interview he took all my orginal documents including my travel document, the couslar told me that my police certificate not included my Grandfather in police certificate for instance (John Max Thom) is my full name. but here in Uk when we arrived they only ask me only I give (John and Max) as the Frist name and surname. (Thom) is not mentioned even in my work permit /refugee sutatus and travel document but all my country documents birth certificate, Education and other documents includes frist name, middle name, and surname (John Max Thom).
So He told me to send another police certificate which includes Frist name, middle name and surname. Even when I apply for police certificate I can even see on the form Fristname and Surname and I ask the Solicitor and police station they told me that they can’t do anything and I don’t know what to do i decided to email to the Embassy about the situation.
● Is this may affect my process to get Visa?
● what shall i do please i need some advice?
April 14, 2017 at 13:59
Follow the instructions of the embassy and give them what they want. If you don’t, they won’t approve the visa.

Hi Britsimon
my case number is 2018EU331xx, I already submitted my ds260. As I understood, if everything is ok with my DS260, I would likely to be interviewed around July next year, if I’m lucky, and receive my 2NL in May, is it right?
May 8, 2017 at 17:07
About right.
