OK, so I am getting overwhelmed with a flood of 2017 selectees with very basic questions. Let me try and address the most frequent ones here in the hope that people will read this. If you ask a question and I give you a link to this page, it is to indicate that your question can be answered by reading this page and using some common sense.
By the way. VERY IMPORTANT. If you have to ask me more than one question – please NUMBER the questions to make my work easier.
Is there a deadline to submit my DS260?
There is no official deadline to submit your DS260. People will continue to submit DS260s for DV2017 cases well into 2017. Submissions as late as April or perhaps even May of next year will still get processed in time.
How long does it take to process the DS260?
Based on the past 2 years (since the DS260 was introduced), we can be pretty confident in the following info.
The actual processing time of the DS260 is quite short – probably 3 to 4 weeks. However, because of the volume of DS260s that are received starting at the beginning of May, a backlog builds up very quickly. You can think of this as a queue. In the two past years, that queue or backlog has meant that DS260s were taking 4 to 5 months to process (obviously most of that time being spent waiting). So – for those that submit their DS260 in the first week or two after the initial draw, the processing time will be quite short. Then a backlog will build and processing times will build up to 4 or 5 month delay. Then, early next year, processing times will reduce again to being a few weeks.
Does every DS260 take the same time to process?
No. There is some background checks required on each case that vary according to the situation of the selectees. The precise details of the checks are not published, but we can guess they are mainly about ensuring security of the USA. That means they communicate with agencies and foreign governments about the details you provide on the DS260. Some countries co-operate with the USA, some don’t. In countries that don’t co-operate you can expect DS260 will take longer. So, some cases are very simple, and some not so simple. If a selectee was raised in Western Europe, works in an office and has never travelled to certain high risk countries we can expect the DS260 processing (once the case is ACTUALLY processed, not queued) to be quick. If on the other hand someone has travel history around certain countries in the middle East or lists their work as “Nuclear weapons specialist”, well they can expect the US government to take longer over those checks.
So – never assume that all DS260s submitted on the same day will complete processing on the same day. There will be variations.
When will I be interviewed? Is my number safe?
OK, first of all. Processing timing is mainly based on your case number, and where that number is ranked within each region. So – if you are case number 900 in OC region for example (where the highest case number will probably be around 1000) you are near the back of the line and can expect a long wait before being interviewed. However, that same number in AF region (where the highest case number could be 50,000 to 60000) would be very low. A low number means the case could be interviewed earlier.
HOWEVER, if a selectee with a low case number submits their DS260 late, it is possible their case will not be scheduled until a later month than their case number would suggest. No case will be scheduled unless the DS260 has been processed. However, in the case of someone with a low number who missed their “current” month because of DS260 backlogs, their case will be scheduled once the DS260 is processed. In some cases people might actually want to use this delay to cause a later interview (for instance if someone wants to get married prior to interview).
When will KCC send the first 2NLs?
The first 2NLs (the interview notification) for DV2017 will go out in late August. That will be for cases that have been processed AND are current for October. Then 2NLs will come in a monthly schedule, also late in each month. So – late in September for November interviews and so on.
When are the visa bulletins published?
The visa bulletins are published around the 8th to the 15th of each month. If you call KCC they will always respond that it is released on the 15th. They are not “late” until the 16th. Usually I get people lamenting “the sky is falling” and “why are they so late” around the 10th or 11th. That will happen every month – and no matter how many times I explain, people are impatient.
How do KCC schedule the cases?
Roughly speaking all interviews are spread out over the year, starting in October and ending the following September. KCC release numbers via the visa bulletin to say which case numbers can be interviewed. Check out this article to understand how to read the visa bulletin.
KCC will increase the number made current on each region at a pace that ensures they have enough interviews to match the embassy capacity during each month.
So – to take an example. If OC had a highest case number of 1000, we could roughly expect to see that number increase by 100 each month. However, due to DS260 backlogs (remember no case can be scheduled UNTIL the DS260 is processed), KCC might release a higher number to start with (for October and November for instance) and slow down later. So – we might see OC start at 200 in October, be 350 in November and then increase by 50 to 75 each month for a while.
The same thing will happen in each region. This effect is going to be particularly pronounced in AF region where selectees typically take a long time to submit their forms. So – AF will start with a high VB number. Many will rejoice and say how fast things are moving and then those same people will be confused when the pace decreases later on. I have tried to explain this many times, but people just don’t seem to understand the point. It ends up being mysterious and frustrating. So – people need to be ready to be patient.
You can look at the historical visa bulletin numbers from previous years to get an idea how things work. However, every year is different, so I would suggest only taking a look at DV2016 or DV2015 to try and anticipate when your number will be scheduled for interview. Please do that rather than asking me to predict your interview date. Use some judgment and common sense to allow me to spend my time on people that need help with more critical questions.
To encourage people to look for themselves I have taken the 2015 and 2016 numbers and plotted them onto charts. So – look for your number in your region and you can guess roughly when your case will be ready for interview.

Hi BritSimon. Thanks for all of the effort you put in to helping others on this. Thoughts on a 2018OC0000127X?
May 8, 2017 at 17:39
Did you read the article – that captures my thoughts.
May 8, 2017 at 17:47
Sorry. I thought the article was for 2017.
May 8, 2017 at 17:50

Hello Brit I am from Cameroon a winner of the 2017 dv lottery. I have filled my ds260 form but I really have this problem while submitting. The sign/ submitting icon isn’t highlighted and I have this message saying my case number doesn’t match with what I used to sign in. It’s really getting me worried. Pls help me out.
May 11, 2017 at 21:21
May 12, 2017 at 00:24
Hi Brit I did the ds260 I’m from Ecuador I come ilegal to USA I still can get the visa
May 12, 2017 at 00:29
If you are not in status in the USA, you cannot process inside the USA – so you would have to leave. If you have overstayed your visa for too long you will be barred for 3 to 10 years – so that means you cannot process a DV lottery win.
May 12, 2017 at 00:38
You recommend me not go to the interview may I get arrested by the immigration
May 12, 2017 at 02:09
I didn’t say anything like that!
May 13, 2017 at 09:07
Hi Briit ,my question is regarding police certificate.
I grad schoold in india for two years but know I am back in my country and working. The reciprocity for India says that “indian police certificates are not available for foreign(non indian ) nationals applying outside India” .I left india without police certificate but with a valid RP document from FRRO.Am I still expected to present police certificate from india ?
May 13, 2017 at 13:42
It the reciprocity page says they are not available, then you are not expected to produce the police cert in those circumstances.
May 15, 2017 at 17:55
Hoping you are fine.
Iam already in America ,God is great Brit.
I went to Social securty Administration for my SSN, when i reached there they gave me the form to fill in the information this includes my names and birth place and date of birth ,telephone contact, address mother and father names.
when i filled DS 260 application, there was aquestion which says Do you want the social security Adminisrtation to issue social security number and card and i said YES, i thought there was no need to fill again any form at SSA.
Qn 1 -Was it a mistake to fill that form at Social security office?
Qn 2- Is Social security number and card differers a ccording to our visa types like Dv lottery visas etc?
Qn 3-All Social security numbers and cards are the same for visas?
Waiting to hear from you.
May 15, 2017 at 22:03
1. You probably didn’t need to go to the SSA office at all- but it’s ok, it won’t cause problems.
May 19, 2017 at 20:19
1- I’m a dvd winner 2018 and mother’s name on 4 of my kids birth certificates bears my names eg Janet Mafo while on one of the kids bears plus my husband’s eg Bama Mafo Janet .but father’s name is uniform. Any problem
2- one of the kids names on submission of ds260 was written Bama John lea while on his documents is Lea Bama John .will it complicate?
3- one of my sons resides in the USA . How do can his case be handled.
4- can l drop one of the kids if he picks a job elsewhere before interview schedule?
May 20, 2017 at 14:38
3. He should travel to interview with you
May 23, 2017 at 22:59
Thanks brit for your response. I still insist on idea of child residing in the us trsvelling back home for interview because I read in one of the visa interview guide that his case can be treated there if he is busy esp if it is within schooling periods. What advice?
May 23, 2017 at 23:13
Again? Travel back to your country.
May 23, 2017 at 22:52
Thanks for guiding us.
Qn:1-Is it okay for new imigrant with Green Card(DV) already who has just arrived in USA in one month and is looking a job to apply for assistance in housing agencies?
2-Is it okay for new imigrant with Green card(DV) to ask assistance interms of housing?
3-He or she allowed to ask for free things in such organisation to apply for housing or it may have an effect on his or her GC?
Waiting to hear from you.
May 23, 2017 at 23:14
A new immigrant is supposed to not become a public charge. It can have impact to a citizenship case.
May 24, 2017 at 07:36
My wife and I were lawfully married but due to certain differences that developed between she and I rendering it undesirable to continue to live together as husband and wife, we agreed to live separate and then later on entered into a legal agreement two months prior to playing the DV, to legitimize our separation.
With said legal separation and realizing the need to respect and adhere to the terms and conditions therein to avoid any unforeseeable problem that may have risen thereof, I was constrained, compelled and thus played the DV as an individual without including my spouse
However, through the counsel of the church and our own inner convictions, we decided to and subsequently reconciled our differences this year, We are now living together as husband and wife as it used to be prior to our separation.
Now that I have been randomly selected for further processing for the fiscal year 2018 and with the situation indicated above, what do I need to do in this stead? Can I include her on DS-260 form? Kindly advise.
I have in my possession, all the legal documentations-Agreements of Separation and Reconciliation, to substantiate these claims.
Thank you very much and I look forward to hearing from you.
May 24, 2017 at 13:56
I already answered your verbose question.
May 24, 2017 at 07:50
Please address the following for me:
1. Can you include your wife and son on the DS-260 form if they were not listed on the original entry?
If you have a child that is above 21 and because of his age, you did not include him on the original entry, How will you answer the question on the DS-260 form that says do you a child? Should it be “YES” even though the child was not included on the original entry or “N0 ?
May 24, 2017 at 13:52
Answer yes – list the child, but don’t complete a DS260 for that child.
May 24, 2017 at 14:03
I have one question, I had an interview last April 2017 in US Embassy in London and they told me to send the police Certificate and Asset Availablity document to the Embassy by my DX carrier.
I sent the documents to Embassy last week.
But there is no respond from Embassy until now. Bristsimon, is this mean my application takes long time ?
May 24, 2017 at 14:07
Because you let the case stay in AP over a month end, there will now be a delay while they review the documents and then ask KCC to re-allocate a visa.
June 10, 2017 at 15:24
Ok Thank you
May 26, 2017 at 13:35
if granted visas can the principal winner travel and stay up to a year or more in the us before the acompanying winners follows
May 26, 2017 at 13:53
The visas issued have an expiry date that cannot be extended. THat date is set as 6 months after the medical – so NO the derivatives would have to enter the USA earlier than the 1 year you mention.
May 30, 2017 at 13:30
One of my kids is in the secondary form 4 school and his first school leaving certificate is not yet established by the authorities. And he has only his birth certificate as official document. Any problem
May 30, 2017 at 17:20
My son will be 21years on march 01 2018. Will it pose any problem if my interview comes after that date.
May 30, 2017 at 22:27
May 30, 2017 at 22:44
He will need a passport too. Other than that, no problem.
June 1, 2017 at 21:58
Hi Sir, a friend of my enter the DV 2018 as a single person, but at that time she was pregnant.

June 6, 2017 at 10:16
Is the medical fee paid on, before or after the interview or at your convenience ie when you are prepared to travel.
June 6, 2017 at 23:48
You have the medical prior to the interview, and the doctor will expect you to pay on the day – so the medical fee is paid prior to the interview.

June 10, 2017 at 15:19
I have a crouple of questions, Last time I have send my to documents which is asked by the Embassy here in London (I send the documents on 2 MAY/2017) after my interview last 12 April/2017.
*How long it takes and how can I contact the Embassy to know about application processes?
I need advice and help.
June 10, 2017 at 16:36
Really – you just have to wait. Because your documents were provided after the month had passed, you caused a delay in your case.
June 22, 2017 at 21:46
Mr. Britsimon, How long it takes to be called for interview by Embassy?
June 22, 2017 at 22:32
As I told you before – you just have to wait.
June 22, 2017 at 02:20
I have won the dv 2017 I had the interview on May 11 2017. They said ok go home and answer these questions to this email regarding travel history work history and addresses. I sent them the answers a month later they called me and said bring yours and your family passports and id this Friday. Does this mean I will get the visa? Will they ask me more questions? Thank you.
June 22, 2017 at 20:40
I don’t know what they will do. Just go – and see!
June 22, 2017 at 20:50
Have anybody been through this experience?
June 22, 2017 at 21:35
Yes, but every case is different.
June 23, 2017 at 07:16
I just went today and they said they wanted my old passport and returned mines and my family passports. They said to send that and wait for a response. Hopefully it won’t be long.

July 12, 2017 at 06:32
July 12, 2017 at 08:04
Mr. Britsimon Shall I send it the copy of affidavit of support I-134 to the Embassy again?
July 12, 2017 at 08:07
Why? Do you think sending it again and again makes them work faster?
July 12, 2017 at 07:46
I submited my DS260 form in 1 of June, AF42***,
1- What will be next? Will i wait a messages from KCC?
2- How can i know which numbers are know in the process? and my number is about to be interviewed?
July 12, 2017 at 07:56
Read the link below carefully.
July 12, 2017 at 15:20
No I don’t think so But they just ask me to send the I-134 that’s why Mr. Britsimon.
July 19, 2017 at 17:40
I have submitted DS-260. How long does it take for KCC to respond and let me know for an interview appointment?
July 19, 2017 at 17:47
Read the link below which answers your questions.
July 26, 2017 at 02:46
Hello Brit, my name is John. I just realized I was selected for DV2017 and completed the DS260. My case # is AF43xxx. Would I have any chance of getting an interview?
By the way thank you for the great job you are doing here. Keep it up!
July 26, 2017 at 19:20
You are obviously very late in filing your DS260. I don’t know whether they will process it and schedule you for interview.
August 1, 2017 at 18:13
Hi just need a little insight, I am a DVC applicant from the Oceania region. I got my interview rescheduled from the US embassy in Auckland to one in America. Seeing how I would be in America for 4 months, they told me to apply for D260 and pay $330. I’ve done that, paid the necessary fees for i-485 application (May23rd, they received it May 30th) and biometrics fee, have had my medical done and just got done with biometrics appointment yesterday. How long do you think it will be til I hear from USCIS on my application?
August 1, 2017 at 18:35
AOS cases vary in processing time – but of course must be completed by September 30th, so you don’t have long to wait.
August 3, 2017 at 05:33
Many thanks BritSimon! I was having doubts but you’ve helped me clear them right away! Keep up the good work!!!
September 8, 2017 at 16:33
Update: So I was wondering why I haven’t gotten an interview date yet. I called the USCIS to check on my status and found out my field office is processing i-485’s from Oct. 2016.
I called the KCC to enquire on why I haven’t gotten an interview date yet and they said I have to contact the field office directly that is handling my case and have them request for my file. The deadline is almost up, but I’m hopeful as I made an appointment with my field office (no direct phone or email contact) for the 22nd of this month. Hopefully I can get it done in time and get a favourable response.
Just a heads up for those who want to go the same route I have. *Super Bummed*
September 8, 2017 at 20:51
Wow – you left this too long to book an infopass. If you can find an earlier infopass that would be better. Make CERTAIN you are properly prepared for the infopass. Go to that meeting prepared to have the interview. Your case MUST NOT be allowed to go past September 30. You have to make sure the FO understands that.
September 16, 2017 at 19:01
Left it too long indeed. I didn’t know I had to run after them myself to get an interview.
September 17, 2017 at 00:15
Yep – that is normal. However, there is now a serious problem. Several AoS cases have been informed that visas have run out. Perhaps they allocated visas to your case already, but if they haven’t, you may not be able to adjust.
My explanation here:
August 6, 2017 at 15:22
What is the difference between petion denial and visa refusal is it the same
August 6, 2017 at 15:25
August 6, 2017 at 15:35
How can you explain please
August 6, 2017 at 15:42

Both words mean the same thing.

Hi dear simon! I won the Dv 2018 Lottery. My Case Number is AF 84xx. I Submitted my DS 260 Since 13 May. We are almost at the end of the month and I have not yet received my second letter. What should I do? Thanks
August 28, 2017 at 14:25
You will probably be scheduled next month – so just wait.
August 28, 2017 at 15:22
Okay Thanks Dear BritSimon. So can I still hope to have my interview in October?
August 28, 2017 at 15:43
The Green Cards given out in November are the same as those in October.
September 1, 2017 at 03:54
Hello BritSimon, my interview is in 5 days. I am a dv 2017 winner. I have all docs ready with me except a police cert for my stay in the Netherlands for a year and half while i was in a post grad study. This was over 9 years ago. I have applied for the certificate online from the concerned Dutch office. I really don’t know if I will have the doc ready with me before my interview and don’t want to take the risk of pushing my interview date (it is already September). Will an explanation of the situation in more detail to the consular officer help just in case I can’t get the cert in time? Thanks for your support!
September 1, 2017 at 05:18
They need the cert – so you must provide it. An explanation won’t do. However, attend your interview as scheduled.
September 1, 2017 at 08:27
Thank you. Will do so.
September 1, 2017 at 18:25
I travelled to the U.S earlier in August and received the stamp from the USCBP officer after spending 4 days with family in the U.S, I returned to Canada. I’m still packing up my things and tying up loose ends. It’s been 3 weeks to the day since my visa was activated. I called family in the U.S and they said my Social Security Number has not arrived yet. I already understand the actual Green Card will still take more time to arrive at their address. Also not able to find any info on who to contact for a status.
I recall clearly on the DS-260 that I answered “yes” to being issued an SSN number and have it mailed to my family’s address. I’m still in Canada for a short while longer and jobs I’ve applied to in the U.S are now asking for my SSN.
My questions are:
1. Should I have gone to the SSA office for an SSN number even though I was recently stamped?
2. How would I find out the status of my SSN when I’m out-of-state?
3. When I make my permanent trip to the U.S will I run into any issues?
Thank you again for creating this site, it is a tremendous goldmine of information!

1. No would normally only have done that if the card doesn’t arrive within a reasonable timescale (2 to 3 weeks).
2. The SSA might tell you over the phone.
3. Let me check my crystal ball…

I was email kcc to unlock my form today and replay this
Your forms have been received and are currently processing. Allow several weeks for processing. Interviews are scheduled numerically based on case numbers that have completed processing

Hi Brit I won the lottery with my daughter but her mother said she wouldn’t allow me to go with her, will that affect my visa?

September 15, 2017 at 19:08
My husband won 2018 dv lottery in which he filled me and our children on the initial form. And I came to USA 6 months ago and filed asylum(I-589). My husband and our children are back home.
1. Does it make the case complicated?
2. Do you think, Is there a possibility to included me in this process? If yes what is the proceedure?
September 15, 2017 at 20:22
1. Yes, very.
2. I have no idea how you will sort that out. The normal procedure is to process with your husband. Talk to your lawyer.
September 17, 2017 at 14:59
Dear Brit, I talked with my lawyer and he was not sure as well. So, what we did was, we filled DS160 mentioning our current situation and indicate the place of the interview for my husband and our kids at US Embassy in Addis Ababa and mine here in USA. Do you think it will delay their visa?
September 17, 2017 at 17:57
Your case is going to be complicated. Your husband and child should process and get the DV visa. You will not get a DV visa unless you attend the interview with them (which I presume you won’t). Therefore your husband will have to come to the USA and file for a family sponsored case for you, which can happen at the same time as your asylum case. The family sponsored case will take 2 years.
September 17, 2017 at 15:08
Please read as DS260 on my previous question instead of DS160.
September 27, 2017 at 02:13
I win DV lottery 2017 and I fill out DS260 form end of May but still I haven’t got any letter from KCC. Is there any chances to get letter from KCC.
September 27, 2017 at 03:36
Are you sure it is DV2017 and not 2018? DV2017 ends in a few days.
September 27, 2017 at 04:15

September 27, 2017 at 04:46
If you can’t even be bothered to go and look up your case number after I asked you to confirm it, then I can’t be bothered to help you….
You had better get serious about this life changing privilege.
September 27, 2017 at 04:57

December 7, 2017 at 22:40
Greetings Sir, i was being selected in the 2018 dv lottery program. I have a doubt, my date of birth in my present institution(university) does not reflect that on my birth certificate. Will it be a problem to me while at the interview? Thank you

November 9, 2017 at 14:13
A person who has committed an error at the level of her birth year for example she puts 1994 instead of writing 1992 can she write a KCCD for a CORRECTION
November 9, 2017 at 14:24
You can ask KCC to unlock the DS260, and make the correction.
November 17, 2017 at 00:14
OK I DID NOT KNOW THE CORRECTION AND I HAVE HELD THIS YEAR AND I COMPLETE AND VALIDATE THE DS260. MALGRE I MAKE CA ALREADY PUISE I ASK KCCD FOR A MODIFICATION OF THE DS260 ALREADY VALID AFTER FILLING THE DS260
November 17, 2017 at 09:45
OK I DO NOT KNOW THE CORRECTION IS POSSIBLE AND I FILLED THE FORM DS260 BY MAINTAINING THE DATE OF ERROR IT IS TO SAY I COMPLETE AND VALIDATE THE DS260. CAN I ASK KCCD FOR A MODIFICATION OF THE DS260 ALREADY VALID AFTER FILLING THE DS260
November 17, 2017 at 15:26
You can unlock and correct the DS260 if not already scheduled.
November 19, 2017 at 00:20
you said “if not already scheduled.” what do you want me to understand and in addition to unlock the DS must be written to KCCD so that he unlocked. and finally we can stay without unlocking and make the correction but during the interview; report the error committed at the date of birth
