At the time of writing it is a few days after the DV2020 results were made available. People have noticed that I am suggesting people don’t rush to submit their DS260. I would even say that the majority of cases should NOT be submitting their DS260 – and I want to explain that advice.
As I have mentioned in a couple of other articles, we are seeing some VERY high case numbers in all regions, and that could mean this is a very over selected year. There are 50,000 visas available. It is “normal” to select more than that as winners (because some cases won’t continue the process), but a good number would be less than 90k or 100k at most. In some previous years we have seen KCC select 125k and even 140k. If they have done that again this year it will be INEVITABLE that some cases will not become current (i.e. will not get an interview).
So – we will see selectee numbers (by country and region) in one of the next 3 Visa Bulletins. There is one to be released this week, then about the same time in the coming months. So – one of those VBs will give us an important number – the selectee number. From that we can determine whether this is a normal selection year with a lot more holes than usual (because of some new procedure). OR this is an over selected year.
Until then people should hold back their DS260 unless their case number is very low. Why? Well several reasons.
- Submitting the DS260 early does not speed up your case. You cannot be interviewed before your case number is ready. Not under any circumstances.
- Most people haven’t bothered to read and understand the procedure so they will rush and later realize they made mistakes, some of which will cause problems.
- Submitting a DS260 is a serious thing. It is an immigrant application, and once that has been submitted you forever have to declare you have made an application to emigrate to the USA. If you do not get a GC through the lottery will will have declared “immigrant intent” which can make future NON immigrant visa applications harder to get approved. Not impossible, but harder.
So – unless your number is LOW, I would recommend you wait a couple of months at least. It won’t harm you by waiting, this is not first come first served, and it could save you some pain later.
By “low” I mean the following by region.
EU and AF region Under 15,000.
AS region under 5000
SA and OC under 500.
Numbers higher than that will probably not even be current (eligible for interview) in 2019. They would get interviews in 2020 only. So why rush???

hey brit
on my initial DV-lottery form, I think I have mistakenly ticked on bachelor completed but currently I am studying bachelor 1st year. But at DS-260 I have said that I have completed my high school diploma(+2 level). will this reason be the cause of visa denial?
June 29, 2019 at 19:48
No
June 30, 2019 at 09:16

June 30, 2019 at 11:36
Hello Simon,
Based on ur information I have realize that my interview will taken place after August 2020. I am almost done on the DS 260 form. Ma issue is my passport will be expired in September 2020. If the interview is happened on September what should I do? Do u think I need to cahnge my passport and use the new number?
Thanks
June 30, 2019 at 16:32
You should delay submission of your DS260 – and renew your passport. There is no rush.
June 30, 2019 at 16:29
You have asked this twice before – and you still haven’t answered my question…

August 14, 2019 at 10:12
I assume you mean your number is 2020AF55XXX (55,000). In that case it could be months before you hear anything.
August 14, 2019 at 12:06
Hi simon
So in that case it could be how many months before here anything and my case number is High or low
August 14, 2019 at 14:38
You can read some of my articles to see how progress happens.
July 1, 2019 at 10:16

July 1, 2019 at 10:30
Hi Simon, am AF58xxx, during my entry i used the academic qualification criteria, i have finished college and i will be graduating this December, my question is when i will be filling my ds260 there is a question on occupation do i put a student still or unemployed since i haven’t gotten a job and one of the requirement for work is at least 2 years experience,?
July 1, 2019 at 21:12
Whatever is the most accurate.
If you meet the education requirement you do NOT need to ALSO meet the work experience requirement.
July 1, 2019 at 10:30
Hello simon

July 1, 2019 at 22:47
Year? Region?
July 1, 2019 at 21:18
Hi Simon,
Thank you for your wonderful blogs, and much appreciate you using your time for literal genuine help.
I have been selected for 2020 and my number is low from AS region, but my confusion is when should one apply for change of status if already in USA, I am currently in USA under F1 visa and in good standing status.
Could you guide me to the process time and filing.
Thanks in advance,
Anusha
July 2, 2019 at 20:48
It depends when your number is current. There is an early filing policy – but you should NOT do that before October 1. AOS info is best found on the thread below.
https://forums.immigration.com/threads/dv-2020-aos-only.340762/
July 3, 2019 at 16:32
Thank you so much! I am on AS000041xx , so considering the last 5 year statistics, I believe it should be later this year or early (first quarter) 2020.
Do you personally see any drawback of filing AOS?
Thanks in advance,
Anusha
July 3, 2019 at 18:09
No problem. Use the link I gave you.
July 3, 2019 at 18:23
I did check that,, it is really very helpful and contains a lot of information.
Thank you much!
July 3, 2019 at 17:57
Hello Simon, thanks for all the information you provide. I was wondering if the translations that you have to have should be made by a translator of my country of birth or it doesnt matter?
July 3, 2019 at 18:26
Doesn’t matter (as long as the translator is competent).
July 3, 2019 at 18:14
Hello Simon, please…do you think I have a good number? Here it is SA000010xx…I am from Cuba. Thanks
July 3, 2019 at 21:32
That number range typically gets current – yes.
July 4, 2019 at 17:07
Hi simon
My case no for year 2020 is AS31***
Is it the right time to submit 260 form
July 4, 2019 at 17:55
You can submit soon if you want, but there is plenty of time to wait – no need to rush.
July 5, 2019 at 05:59

The mistake is i wrote my current address dharan 3 but now the number 3 has become 9 but the place is same and have done same type of mistake in work place current address . I wrote 3(present). In all the documents it is written 3 do I need to unlock and do correction.in recently translated birth certificate it is written ward number 9 ( former 3)

July 9, 2019 at 23:19

July 9, 2019 at 02:41
Hi Simon,
I am new to your blog and wanted to thank you for creating it. It’s extremely helpful. I am a DV2020 selectee and I don’t quite understand how the the case numbers work yet. Mine is SA000036XX, could you please tell me, in case you know, if this is safe, high or low? Should I expect the interview to be scheduled this or next year? Also, do you know when the documents should be sent? Thanks!
July 9, 2019 at 22:57
It is high, which means there is some risk that you never get a chance – but it is too early to know for sure. So – for now, just wait. There will not be any need to do anything until next year.
July 10, 2019 at 17:50
Thank you. Let’s hope I get a chance!
July 9, 2019 at 09:09
Hi Brit
My case # AF74xxx (Egypt)what is the last day can I submit the ds260 for Dv2020
July 9, 2019 at 23:07
A LONG time – probably April/May next year.
July 10, 2019 at 09:13
I still don’t understand this :
Egypt is AF but in visa bulletin it’s mostly separated e.x AF 1234 except Egypt 123 .
If I live in Egypt , but my chargability is Congo , for exemple , but I’ll have my interview in Egypt . Which visa bulletin do I belong to ? Is it AF or will be included with the ( except Egypt ) ?
Thank you
July 10, 2019 at 18:17
AF, not Egypt.
July 10, 2019 at 18:38
Thank you , Wizard ?
July 10, 2019 at 03:52
Hi Simon, thanks for your help!!
One question. I already submitted my ds260
When do I suppose to get an answer ?
Do they send me an email with a notification in case I was or I wasn’t approved for the interview?
July 10, 2019 at 05:39
Read the guide linked above. It depends on your case number.
July 10, 2019 at 11:05
hey Britsimon i would like to ask , my case number is 2020AF00050XXX ,Rwanda is it high or i can submit my DS260 form this month and when should i be called for interview? thanks
July 10, 2019 at 21:34
Yes it is high, but it is too soon to know if you will get an interview. I suggest you wait for a few months at least, until we know more.
July 10, 2019 at 11:27
Dear All,
Are there selectees who are having higher case number greater than 2020AS00031000 in Asian region ? I want to know the highest case number in Asian region in 2020
Please comment your case number with using ‘x’
Thanks
Sehan
July 11, 2019 at 05:25
Mine is not higher but pretty close at 2020AS298xx
You and I have the highest case numbers I’ve seen for this region, the next highest ones are all in the 21xxx range. Numbers are crazy high this year for this region (and others) and we still don’t know why… Good luck to us, we’re gonna need it!

July 10, 2019 at 20:49
How can I change my interview locations after I send ds 260 ?iam Sudanese I was born in UAE but my case number comes AF ?? Because I do my country of Eligibilty Sudan it’s a problem ????
July 10, 2019 at 21:41
Unless you were married at the time of entry to someone from AF region you should have chosen UAE as your country of birth. You should have an AS number. So – you will be disqualified.
July 15, 2019 at 15:35
Hi Simon,
I am from EU, and my nr is 2020EU13xxx. I submitted the ds260 in june, as i meet both education and work experience criteria, didn’t feel i needed to postpone. I understand by reading your blog the KCC will come back and request additional documents that support the ds260. When could i expect them to ask for those?
Many thanks for all your efforts and the informatiin you share with us.
July 16, 2019 at 00:41
In the next month or two.
July 16, 2019 at 06:06
Hi Brit , Iam from Africa , In Tanzania to be specific my case no 2020AF70xxxxx, , when should i expect KCC to get back to me , I meet all the Education and work experience Criteria
July 16, 2019 at 12:52
The number of XXXs after your number should show the SCALE or RANGE of your number. So is the number 700 (7XX), or 7000 (7XXX) or 70000 (70XXX)?
July 16, 2019 at 13:10
70XXX( SEVEN ZERO TRIPLE X)
July 16, 2019 at 13:12
OK – then you won’t hear anything until about 9 to 10 months from now.
July 16, 2019 at 13:35
Thank you for quick response , you are the best
July 16, 2019 at 07:36
Many greating sir Britsimon
I was following ur page for the last 3 months
I got a lot from u thanks.
I reviewed previous dv results with the current one
Trying to predict my vissa bulletin month
2017 dv lottery result is close to this year the selectee were 83910 vs now 83884
Except the maximum case number in my region AF which was 42xxx in contrast to this year which is 75xxx
So i concluded being 252xx cn probably i may get interviewed around February to march
I may be wrong but i hve tried relating with the possible holes
I am from ethiopia and this year they hve selected half of the last year selectees in my country so does that make sense?
Thanks
July 16, 2019 at 12:53
You are wrong. Your number will be current earlier than you think. Do not try to compare with previous years.
I will be create a video/article about this in the next few days.
July 16, 2019 at 13:23
Hi Simon,
Been a huge follower of your blog. My case number is AS00013XXX and I have completed the form but yet to submit. From your recent post I understand a higher case number would have a good chance for the DV2020 visas. Should I submit my form now or wait and with my case number what do you reckon my chances are? Any comments would be highly appreciated.
Many thanks!
July 16, 2019 at 13:51
Submit soon if you want an early interview.
July 16, 2019 at 15:05
Good day Brit . As we have already know now that VB might go faster than previous years , and that high CN might be called for interviews earlier than we think . May I please know if it’s safe to submit my DS-260 by August ,when I get my daughter’s passport ? CN 2020AF56xxx . And when can we expect to hear from KCC , if ever ? Thank you
July 16, 2019 at 15:14
You have PLENTY of time. No need to be concerned. Submit anytimne this year and you’ll be fine….
July 16, 2019 at 15:17
Thank you for the quick response . And congratulations for your new first worshipers ??? .
July 16, 2019 at 15:05
Thank you. Will submit within the next couple of days. I hope I am not late as of now. Fingers crossed
July 16, 2019 at 13:50
Hi Brit,
Thanks for the effort you put into this blog.
I have an 2020AF24××× case number. I have submitted my DS260 early on. Simply because the message displayed by the ceac site says to complete and submit rapidly ASAP the DS260. I have stumbled upon your website later on.
I still have one concern, I’ve visited the US before, as a young exchange student 14 years ago. And I have failed to report my departure by airplane from DC. It’s no excuse, but I was 16, and had no idea how things should be. But I still have my old passport with the stamps of me entering back to my country, and the airline ticket.
How would you advise me to proceed, do I wait until I’m asked by the KCC or the interviewer about it. Do I tell them myself, that there is a problem. I’ve read on certain websites that departure by airplane is no problem as they know I left the country. I found on a state website, that I have to send original documents by Mail confirming I left the country to an immigration office. But they mentioned that it’s not allowed to contact them for confirmation of status correction or even recieving the required documents.
What can you advise me?
Thank you.
July 16, 2019 at 14:19
You are worrying for nothing. Relax.
July 16, 2019 at 23:31
Thanks. That was most needed.

Hi Simon, first time on your blog, my case number is 2020SA26XX
How can I know if this is a safe, high o low number? I don’t understand very well…
Anyway, I submitted the DS 260 Form on May 20, It was too early or that’s ok?
Is it possible to know an estimated date for my interview?
I´ve heard that the marital status could affect the time that KCC takes to process the case, (I´m single and i don´t have any child)
Another thing, I applied for my country, Venezuela, but I´m living in Argentina at this moment, so if I have an interview it will be here (Argentina), I put it on the form ds260…
Thaks for your dedication to this blog

Hello Mr. BritSimon,
I have trying to post these questions on “Ask Questions Here” for two times, but seem unsuccessful. I’ll apologize if it is duplicate.
Q1: My wife is the selectee of DV2020AS2xxxx.
First question is : If the bank statements & stocks of mine could be a support for my wife as her proves for won’t be the public charge ?
Q2: My whole family is 4 people, I am 59y, my wife is 52y, and two daughters are 19y and 17y and will attend to college if we go to US. Do you think $200k of savings will be enough or should be more for the personal finance not to be a public charge when we interview?
Q3: Final question is about the police certificate. My daughter lived in China (Main land) from 6y to 14y, and then we moved to our home country (Taiwan) after her 14y and lived till now. My daughter is 19y now. She needs to get the police certificate of Taiwan that’s for sure, but does she need to get a police certificate of China (Main land)?
Best regards & thank you for your time.
July 17, 2019 at 05:21
1. No problem.
2. Should be enough.
3. No. That is made clear in the official instructions – please read them as you might also be missing other vital info.

July 20, 2019 at 21:36
Hello Brit
I have a 5 years US tourist visa that I obtained in 2016 but I haven’t been to the US yet. I submitted the application tonight and answered no to “have you ever been to the US”. However, I am expecting to travel to New York next month. Also, I am moving to Canada for uni but I submitted my current address in Saudi Arabia. Would it influence my application in any way?
July 20, 2019 at 21:38
No.
July 22, 2019 at 16:39
Simon for sure i have no adress in us , and i suppose to fill in ds260 form , second i have no petitioner , i i depend on myself , what can i do , advice me please .
July 22, 2019 at 16:50
You have been randomly selected for further processing in the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program for the fiscal year 2020 (October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020). That what the sent to me , so does it mean that i will submit my DS 260 form in October , as i said i am from Rwanda
July 22, 2019 at 17:27
I suggest you take a look at the lottery guide above – learn the process.
July 22, 2019 at 19:35
God help America:)
July 24, 2019 at 13:45
Hello Simon, I just want to let you`ll know that I completed DS-260 Form last June 12th and I received an email today July 24th with this subject 2020SA10XX Further DV Documents Required. Thanks
July 24, 2019 at 15:13
Thanks
July 29, 2019 at 16:26
Hi simon, I need you help…I would like to unlock my DS-260 but they are asking me for Further Dv Documents Required, Am I still in time to unlock it? Thanks
July 29, 2019 at 23:44
You can ask to unlock, yes.
August 1, 2019 at 14:27
For the question “Number of educational institutions attended” in my DS 260 (for 2020), I put “1” (referring to my degree), and then realised that I should have listed all educational insitutions attended instead and not just the university. Do you think I might not get an interview because of this? I’m so stressed out.
August 1, 2019 at 20:18
That would not stop you getting an interview, but if you have time to wait anyway I would suggest you correct the mistake.
August 2, 2019 at 09:47
Mr Simon,
Your blog is much appreciated. An excellent resource for DV and AOS guidance. I applied under my wife’s country (EU) eligibility and she also applied herself but ironically I was selected and she was not.
I am a PhD candidate in US and have my F1 visa until 2024. I have studied and worked in US (in DC for which I went through extensive security background check) before and never been out of status.
My CN is DV 2020 EU29XXX. My query is:
1. Should I submit DS 260 or directly file I-485? Even though I need to do AOS as I can’t leave my PhD program for too long.
2. If I submit DS 260 then when should I do it? I think my number is not high but also not too low.
3. My wife is also in US under F2 and as I have been selected should I submit separate DS260 for her?
4. When can I expect interview?

What if I do not submit DS260, because I changed my mind on getting a green card. Will this cause any issues in regards to future non immigrant visa? Or would this be exactly as if I had never been selected at all? Out of curiosity, would there even be any effect on the chances in future DV lotteries? Thank you very much!

No immigrant intent. No impact of future lotteries.

Hi Brit Simon
I am in Oceania and my case number is OC000004xx. I have submitted my DS260 in July and was sent an email last week asking for further docs. I had my form unlocked in June when I got married, but at that Time while I filled in my spouse and I’s residential address as the same, our mailing addresses were different (she still used her parents) therefore I filled different mailing addresses in the form too.
Would this cause an issue? Should our mailing addresses be the same?
Since our form has been processed and they have asked for further documents, I am not sure if it’s a good idea to unlock form again and update our mailing addresses.
Please advise if this can cause an issue and if I should go ahead and unlock form again?

It’s a bit odd you chose to list your spouse’s address to be different to your own. Will that cause a problem – probably not, but I would personally have corrected that.

Residential address was the same but since she still got her Bills and stuff at her previous address that’s why we left mailing address as it was. So confused right now.. would it set back our processing and subsequently interview scheduling if we unlock again and resubmit?
Would they ask to clarify at the interview as to why our mailing addresses were different?

Don’t overthink this. Unlock and change the address if that is the truth. So what if it causes a small delay. Delay is better than being worried about denial.

Yes I guess you are right. Thanks for the help.
Guess it’s possible interview can be as early as November right?

Hi, my case # is 2019AF46xxx, I got the following response from the Kcc after sending an inquiry about my case.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Your DS-260 and/or required documents were received too late to complete necessary processing for an interview. No further interviews will be scheduled, even if a case number has become current.
Is this usual ? Please help me

It is what I have been warning about for some months now. You have lost your chance. There is nothing you can do.

August 14, 2019 at 11:19
1. You can’t feel it – it’s online. You can FILL it though.
2. You have MONTHS to wait.
3. Yes it is quite high. That’s the opposite of low. Low is better. High means more waiting. Advice – learn patience.
