At the time of writing it is a few days after the DV2020 results were made available. People have noticed that I am suggesting people don’t rush to submit their DS260. I would even say that the majority of cases should NOT be submitting their DS260 – and I want to explain that advice.
As I have mentioned in a couple of other articles, we are seeing some VERY high case numbers in all regions, and that could mean this is a very over selected year. There are 50,000 visas available. It is “normal” to select more than that as winners (because some cases won’t continue the process), but a good number would be less than 90k or 100k at most. In some previous years we have seen KCC select 125k and even 140k. If they have done that again this year it will be INEVITABLE that some cases will not become current (i.e. will not get an interview).
So – we will see selectee numbers (by country and region) in one of the next 3 Visa Bulletins. There is one to be released this week, then about the same time in the coming months. So – one of those VBs will give us an important number – the selectee number. From that we can determine whether this is a normal selection year with a lot more holes than usual (because of some new procedure). OR this is an over selected year.
Until then people should hold back their DS260 unless their case number is very low. Why? Well several reasons.
- Submitting the DS260 early does not speed up your case. You cannot be interviewed before your case number is ready. Not under any circumstances.
- Most people haven’t bothered to read and understand the procedure so they will rush and later realize they made mistakes, some of which will cause problems.
- Submitting a DS260 is a serious thing. It is an immigrant application, and once that has been submitted you forever have to declare you have made an application to emigrate to the USA. If you do not get a GC through the lottery will will have declared “immigrant intent” which can make future NON immigrant visa applications harder to get approved. Not impossible, but harder.
So – unless your number is LOW, I would recommend you wait a couple of months at least. It won’t harm you by waiting, this is not first come first served, and it could save you some pain later.
By “low” I mean the following by region.
EU and AF region Under 15,000.
AS region under 5000
SA and OC under 500.
Numbers higher than that will probably not even be current (eligible for interview) in 2019. They would get interviews in 2020 only. So why rush???

I just noticed that I responded no to the question demanding if I speak other languages other than native language while I speak French and English, is it a reason to unlock my ds? CN: 2020AF00070***
August 15, 2019 at 04:10
You can, you will wait a long time anyway.
August 16, 2019 at 20:26

August 17, 2019 at 07:29
I have commented earlier. My Case no. is AS134XX and I’m from Sri Lanka. I applied for my postgrad studies in Canada and just received my student Visa. My intention was to stay back in Canada after studies and apply for Permanent residency but the Green card win came after I processed my Visa. I am now confused if I should go ahead or withdraw and wait for the US option. Do you think with my Case Number it’s worth doing it? Your reply would be greatly appreciated as I am in massive confusion over my future plans.
August 17, 2019 at 17:59
Is the number going to be current – YES – I am certain.

August 18, 2019 at 08:21
Thank you so much Simon. I apologize for not mentioning the year. Yes it is DV2020 lottery I won. My Canada visa is approved and I have to fly in the next two weeks if I decide to. Also I meet the following requirements for the DV lottery
Completed 12 years of High school and Bachelor’s degree
5 years of work experience
A citizen to Sponsor me
Health and Criminal record clean (I had to submit the same for the Canada visa and got it approved)
I submitted my DS-260 form in July. So like you said I have to decide where I want to live. I would pick USA definitely and wondering if I should withdraw and stay back so I can look at leaving to US next year or the year after. What would you recommend?
August 18, 2019 at 14:31
I am not going to recommend. You need to decide.
August 17, 2019 at 19:01
I have seen all your videos and now i have one question please
1) Can KCC ask me for my documents even if the passport in that moment is expired (but in the moment that i completed DS260 it was ok)
Because i don’t know if i have to change DS260 or let it until KCC ask for my documents and i change it in that time.
I am worried if they ask for documents also if my passport is expired in that time.
Thank you in advance
August 17, 2019 at 20:38
1. You can provide old and new passports.
August 18, 2019 at 22:13
I found your post very helpful and I would allow myself to ask you a short question:
I have quite a low case number (EU10XXX) and haven’t completed DS-260 yet.
If I complet it now, I guess from my research the interview would be around December-Februar with my case number?
My personal situation is that I am changing citizenship from one European country to another and technically the later I have my Green Card-related interview (and required entry to the US), the better. So the question is – how to “delay” my interview as late as it goes – and what is the latest to be more or less sure it is not too late (e.g. May 2020)?
I realize no one can say for sure but any indication from an expert like you would help 🙂
August 19, 2019 at 00:10
Yes you can delay submission of your DS260 OR your documents in order to delay your interview. You can think of May as the last sensible date – but maybe submist the DS260 in April and the documents in May when asked.
August 25, 2019 at 19:32
Brit may I ask please?
1. when do you think selected applicants from Rwanda will be schedule to the interview even if I have high case number?
2. is it a good time now to fill my Ds260 ?
3. if you fill ds form, do they ask supporting document at that moment ? or they give you a time
4. I have been hearing that us citizens they are about voting for no green card again, is true?
August 25, 2019 at 21:36
1. It has nothing to do with the country, and you have not mentioned your case numebr.
2. It’s ok.
3. No. Later.
August 25, 2019 at 19:35
again my 5 question is , 5. what about if you do not have a petitioner ?
August 25, 2019 at 21:39
5. You don’t need a petitioner but may need a sponsor for financials.
August 26, 2019 at 11:06
so you mean if I don’t have a sponsor it will end up disqualified?
you can not depend on yourself? or there is an amount that you suppose to have
August 26, 2019 at 19:34
Read the FAQ about public charge/I-134.
August 31, 2019 at 13:36
Hello BriSinin, I find this article very helpful. I have one question: after submitting the Do 260 form, how King before one can receive interview email from KCC?
August 31, 2019 at 15:24
It depends on the case number.
August 31, 2019 at 18:34

Dear, good morning? When I fill the DS 260, I have answered ‘Yes’ for the question which says “Do you have a documentation to establish that you have received vaccinations in accordance with U.S. Law? Yes or No?”
Is there any problem on my answer? If yes, Shalk I unlock tje DS 260 and change it?
October 19, 2019 at 18:39
In reality you almost certainly don’t have that documentation, but the question is not important, so no need to correct it.

Brit what about if you have bank loan of 5000Usd , and you were selected for dv lottery 2020,
1.when bank is cutting on your salary will not make you disqualified for your visa
2 when you took a loan and you showed the your house will they allow that and will not cause ant complain at airport
September 13, 2019 at 19:29
1. It has nothing to do with DV lottery.
2. I don’t know procedures in your country.
September 18, 2019 at 15:09
Hi Brit. I had commented earlier on my student visa to Canada that I have got. You also answered the question on your youtube live video. Case no: DV2020 AS13XXX I made the decision to come to Canada and currently studying. I submitted my DS260 form in July and I believe I have to alter it now. How do I do it? Does this affect my case?
September 18, 2019 at 15:44
Read the FAQ about unlocking.
October 2, 2019 at 23:52
Thank you Brit. I have made a decision to go back to my home country discontinuing my course in January after the first semester. I would have stayed in Canada for 4 months in total from September to January and would be back well ahead of my interview. Do you think I still have to unlock the form and update? I have heard unlocking the form will push the interview date which is a risk for me. Please be kind to guide me.
October 3, 2019 at 04:24
Did you read the FAQ as I told you?
September 19, 2019 at 10:40

Thank you for your response,
Regarding DV 2021 registration , I’m Egyptian and I born in IRAQ, I don’t have neither passport or even Birth certificate from Iraq, just it’s mentioned on my Egyptian birth certificate, national id and my Egyptian passport that I was born in Iraq without referring even to any Iraqi city in which I born, am I eligible to register my dv2021 as Egyptian? Or have I choose Iraq as country of eligibility.?
Thank you ?
September 26, 2019 at 03:19
Iraq. But you may need other documentation as Egypt don’t have jurisdiction over births in Iraq.
September 25, 2019 at 23:21

2. That is a risk. I cannot predict the outcome.

3. EU. About once in over 100 years.

I have a question regarding Country of Issue for my passport. My recently renewed my passport in the embassy of a country that I am currently working. So, which country should I put for this Country of Issue?
October 3, 2019 at 04:27
The country that provides the passport for you.
October 3, 2019 at 04:50
do we need to request to reopen DS260 to update because I put Country that I am working as I issued it here?
October 5, 2019 at 16:17
We are from Sudan and living in Dubai, my wife is one of the winner of 2020 and her case number 57xxx, we still didn’t fill the ds260 as our birthdates on current passports not the same as birth certificate which we filled on dv forms last year.
1. Should we wait till having new passports with corrected birthdates.
2. When do you think to complete ds260.
3. Based on our case number when expected to have the interview.
October 5, 2019 at 20:00
1. Seems odd – but yes.
2. Before May or so.
3. Summer 2020.

Hi Mr. Brit

October 18, 2019 at 22:54
Your interview will be spring/summer 2020. Honestly – your wisest move would be to marry earlier so that you can easily include your wife on your case. read the FAQ about your options to add her.
October 18, 2019 at 17:34

Hi Brit. Thank you for the good work. My husband won the DV 2020. We already submitted the 260 form since July. Our number is 202046xxx. Today he received email from KCC asking for documents.
1) When do u think we will go for interview?
2) Is it safe to play DV 2021 again?
3) we are Cameroonians and have lived in UAE before for 10 years. UAE does not give police clearance crrcertific if one is out of the country. Is it true that the police clearance will be waived aside at the embassy and we don’t need to get it from UAE, if we are presently living in Cameroon?
October 22, 2019 at 23:59
1. Summer 2020
3. You read the reciprocity page for UAE, and if it says you don’t need a police cert, then you don’t need it. It’s all in the instructions.

My husband won DV lottery for 2020. His case number is AS17XXX.
We have submitted DS260 and got an email to submit documents.
1. I found out I have submitted my postal address as residential address in DS260.
Actually there are 2 different addresses.
So police ckearance report indocate different address than the one I submitted the DS260
So what shall we do.
Do we have to log a request to edit DS260.
2. And there is a 1 letter spelling mistake in my husband’s father’s name in the application.
3. My husband joined a new company so do we have to give this new company details as his current job
Do you think above mentioned details must edit in DS260 form before submit documents.

I didn’t submit my ds260 yet,
-Is there any new governmental decision will be appleid on me?
Because I heard about some new decisions that put more restrictions to get a green card.
– My case number 2020AF71xxx Egypt, should I send all my documents instantly after submitting my ds 260 or can I wait for any further emails from KCC first?
– I have an university degree should I send my high school certificate too, or the university certificate will be enough?
Sorry if I waste your time, but really I feel confused.
Wish you all the best

You have a high case number so you have plenty of time to read and understand better.
1. Too vague to answer.
3. You do not send education documents.
PLEASE DO SOME READING!

1. I don’t know yet. You might have a chance.
2. If you wait too long you will ruin your chance anyway – so wait another month or two if you want – but then you would need to send it.

Hi Brit. I just received my Police Clearance and about to submit documents as I got a reminder Email from KCC. My case number is on the April Visa Bulletin. I read the email which said obtain police records if you are over 16 and the countries you have lived hence I have police certificate from my country of birth/residence and one more country I lived in. My doubt is should I submit clearance from my birth date? Because my clearance from my country of birth is from the age of 14 till present. Would this be an issue? Thanks in advance

Submit what you have. No need to overthink this!

Thanks a ton Brit. Much appreciated. I submitted my documents yesterday and I received an email just now saying they have received all documents successfully and ready to be scheduled an interview when my number becomes current(which is next month) I hope things go smooth from now.
