Dear Brit,
I am a DV2021AF9k, I am frustrated I could not be schedule despite being DQ. I am applying for a 6 months fellowship to the U.S. beginning spring next year, however, I just notice the program requirement saying: “you are NOT eligible for the program if you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and/or you are NOT eligible for the program if you have applied for U.S. permanent residency within the past three years”, does my DS260 application amount to this this clause?? Does my DV2021 DS 260 application equate to applying for U.S. permanent residency???
Please respond.
September 30, 2021 at 19:42
Yes, that is exactly what it is.
September 30, 2021 at 18:42
Thanks a lot BritSimon. Buti I need the link through which I can share this news with my friends and siblings. Thanks again.

October 1, 2021 at 02:06
Hi Brit,
My case DV21 remains in AP and has no end while the DV21’s date has passed. Can I apply for the DV23? Or any harm for those who won the DV and under AP?

October 2, 2021 at 14:49

October 1, 2021 at 14:26
Dear Brit Simon, I was born in Venezuela and unfortunately we are cannot apply for DV2023. However, my father (who passed away already) was born in Spain and I have Spanish citizenship because of him. I checked the instructions but I was not 100% clear if I can use Spain as my country of chargeability or not… Could you please provide some advice on this? if I can apply, what documents I have to prepare to “explain” why I did this? Can my husband also apply because I have Spanish citizenship? Thanks for your continuous help! Caro xx
October 2, 2021 at 15:14
You could only use Spain if neither parent was from Venezuela and your parents were there temporarily when you were born.
October 1, 2021 at 21:20
Hi Brit,
It seems Venezuela it’s out of the list this year. I’ve been trying for several years now with no luck, any other way I can apply?
October 2, 2021 at 15:26
No
December 13, 2021 at 05:37
Hi Simon,
I was wondering usually a country goes back to being elegible in the time lapse of one year or not? Also are refuges taken in at the border considered in the 50.000 immigrant from a country in the last few years count?
December 17, 2021 at 06:10
Doesn’t normally change that fast. Refugees count.
October 2, 2021 at 02:16

If you hold two passports, which one should you enter with? Where you where born or where you live? Or, both?
October 2, 2021 at 20:23
Entry is based on place of birth.
October 2, 2021 at 23:04
Hello Brit
I have some questions.
1.) Regarding dv initial application is it compulsory to answer the whole form in capital letters or normal can do? and does it affect one’s selection qualification process?
2: a) About mailing address:
Some country’s mailing address doesn’t include numbers; I mean they only have street names or road names. How does this work? {e.g; Wellington’s street or brusburry road}
: b) Some country’s have more than 3 numbers before the street’s name! Does any of these affect the random selection process? {e.g) 2679 yorkshire street or 4367 welsborough road}
: c) Some folks have mailing addresses of a country that they reside in and not their own citizenship country. Does this impact any selection process m? {e.g) 2679 yorkshire, London, UK!}
: d) During answering dv initial application on the mailing address section, does adding any punctuation mark affect random selection?
We really really appreciate the insurmountable efforts you put for us. You really are feisty. A video of the mailing address would be so much helpful. Thank you in advance!
October 2, 2021 at 23:25
1. Doesn’t matter
2. Totally overthinking.
October 4, 2021 at 11:43
Hi Brit
I won DV2022 and have been waiting for DQ. Do I had better to apply DV2023 again? ;; I have no idea if it is worth to apply again. ^^;;
October 6, 2021 at 05:06
There is no harm in applying for DV2023, so why not.
October 4, 2021 at 18:36
Hi Simon, I didn’t pass high school exam but in my country the ministry of education can allow those who failed the exam to enroll in associate degree course for 2 years and I graduated from this course. My question is that am I eligible for DV lottery 2023? Thanks
October 6, 2021 at 05:11
Enter, see if you win.
October 6, 2021 at 00:42
Is it OK to apply if the passport expires by December 2022?
October 6, 2021 at 05:26
Yes
October 6, 2021 at 00:51
hello dear Simon i hope you are all fine.is there any hope for the Afghanistan dv 2021 winners
and when will the judge decide finally about dv 2021 winners?
Best regards
October 6, 2021 at 05:26
Unless you are a plaintiff in the lawsuits, DV2021 has ended. There is some chance of legislation being passed to recover lost visas from DV2020 and DV2021, but it is by no means certain yet.
October 6, 2021 at 02:32
Hello Brit Simon i am a Dv winner from nepal with case number AS84xx. As you have been telling to, I was wondering if it is okay to send the documents without being asked. And yes can we fill up an entry form for dv 2023 as i already won dv lottery 2022. Thank you
October 6, 2021 at 05:27
Yes and yes
October 6, 2021 at 20:20
Brit,
The croping photo tool requires Adobe Flash player 10, which seems to have been retired on December 31, 2020. Is there another tool I can use? Thanks
October 8, 2021 at 02:56
Try a different browser.
October 7, 2021 at 00:16
Good night brit, awesome job you are doing, I have an issue, I am not quite clear on the City of birth, the DV instruction does not clearly state whether I should use what’s on my birth certificate or what’s on my passport. I was actually born in a city in my country but on my passport, there is the name of my country (Trinidad and Tobago) instead. I went ahead and entered what was on my birth certificate. I have been trying to win since 2019 but I’m quite afraid that my chances might be slim again this time because of the issue I’ve stated above..
October 8, 2021 at 03:00
List the city as far as you know it.
October 8, 2021 at 17:47
Thank you, hopefully I get the 1st NL this try. You have educated me on the entire process and I would love to thank you for all your videos and advice. Will let you know if I’m selected when the time comes.
October 9, 2021 at 15:30
Good luck!
October 7, 2021 at 05:57

October 7, 2021 at 06:16

October 8, 2021 at 15:57
Hello sir.
I am a Kyrgyzstan citizen and live here for the past 13 years. But I was born in a diferrent country. Afghanistan. Can I still claim eligibility from Kyrgyzstan?
October 9, 2021 at 15:28
No. You choose Afghanistan.
October 9, 2021 at 08:53
Can I apply with out pasport
October 9, 2021 at 15:46
Generally, no. Unless you can claim one of the exemptions. All in the instructions.
October 9, 2021 at 15:31
Sorry I mean will I be denied if I send copy of my school certificate instead of the original since I have misplaced the original
October 9, 2021 at 15:56
No problem.
October 9, 2021 at 15:57
Hi Simon,
Hope you are doing well. I am a DV-2022 winner and I would like to apply for DV-2023. Would it be ok if i used my same photo which I used for DV-2022, for my DV-2023 application as well?
Just to add, my facial appearance has not changed at all. Please advise. Thanks in advance!
October 9, 2021 at 16:04
The instructions specifically say not to do that – so why would you do it?
October 10, 2021 at 07:12
Hi Brit, can you help me with the below inquiry. I just recently submitted my entry for DV 2023. However, my wife was making a screen recording video of the DV application process as an example for his siblings to follow it. While doing this, she mistakenly used my entry photo as an example in her video and submitted it. All the information/details she used in her video wasn’t related to me and it’s therefore not real except for my picture. I want to know will this affect my entry? Will it be considered as a duplicate entry just on the basis of the photo? Please answer me.
October 16, 2021 at 02:56
Possibly since they have tools that compare photos.
October 11, 2021 at 18:35
Hi Simon, hats off to you for what you do!
I recently filed for EDV 2023. I made an error on my address. Actually my address was reformed nationally and my ward number was changed from ward number 5 to 19 (virtually), but my actual physical address/Permanent address is the same. My passport has also the new address with ward number 19. But I wrote my address as ward number 5(Note; in my citizen ship card it states Birth place on ward number 5 and also it has permanent address as ward number 19).
So my question is, will it make a major issue if I got selected?
Or is it possible for me to convince the Interviewer my situation?
Thank You so much!
October 16, 2021 at 03:23
It is no problem.
October 14, 2021 at 07:24
Hello Brit thank you for your help and God bless you . My question is , Is someone didn’t meet the education requirements for the dv can the person still apply for the dv if he is :
(1) Hairdresser ?
(2)aluminum fabricator?
(2) pastor ?
October 14, 2021 at 09:01
Hello Brit good morning, I believed you and the family are doing well.
Brit ,my wife filed for me with I130 , in 2015 December I went for an interview but unfortunately I was denied the visa , in 2019 USCIS wrote a letter to my wife with the heading INTEND TO REVOKE and they explained to my wife why I was denied the visa , they then give my wife 30 days to provide proof of our relationship. The time the IINTEND TO REVOKE notice arrived home , my wife was on an admission at Walter Reed Army Medical Center , my wife was discharged home from the hospital in 2019 and she came and met the INTEND TO REVOKE notice and that time we had only 5 days left for their 30 days they gave us to elapse , my wife quickly wrote to USCIS to explain the situation to them in an attempt to request for few days to prepare our documents to them , as at now we haven’t heard from them again , we are confused and frustrated and we don’t know what to do, please we need your help
(1) What should we do please ?
(2) My wife needs an attorney to help us , can you refer us to a competent attorney???
My wife stays at Maryland so we will prefer if the attorney will be at Maryland or Virginia or Gaithersburg.
Thank you Brit .
October 16, 2021 at 03:51
I only answer DV lottery questions.
October 16, 2021 at 03:47

October 14, 2021 at 13:38
hello dear Simon i hope you are all fine
if the photographer changes the blue background to white by photo shop problem or no problem?
Best regards
October 16, 2021 at 03:58
It depends how well that is done. You are not supposed to edit the photos at all.
October 14, 2021 at 22:16
Hi brit, my brother was always deterred from applying for the dv lottery because he never worked for any company. Jobs are very hard in our country to get, he has tried many times. He does small, seasonal vending of vegetables from our estate since he was was 17 years old. He graduated from secondary school (O’ Level) at the age of 15 and has his graduate certificate. He’s 28 now and is very interested in applying. I know there’s a difference between high school education and secondary school education because we were once under the rule of the the British government and the education system remained even after the British rule. We live in an eligible country for dv lottery. Would him having no paperwork proof of job experience hinder his chances?
October 16, 2021 at 04:06
It sounds like he would not meet the requirements (on education or experience).
October 15, 2021 at 01:23
Hi Simon; my friend applied for dv 2023 but I guess she messed the order of her names. Her academic documents and passport have ASIO NOOR WINNIE but the application she sent has ASIO WINNIE NOOR. Is it a big problem?
October 16, 2021 at 04:07
No
October 17, 2021 at 12:51
Hello, Brit, how are you ?
Like every year, I play with my wife.
We are french, living in France.
My wife’s parents are born in Comoros. My wife is born in France, and at the moment she was born, her parents were living in France.
I have some questions:
1) Is she allowed to play using Comoros instead of France ? We tried to understand the rules but the french translation is not explaining the same thing than the original english version…
2) Is there any benefit for her to play to play using Comoros instead of France ? (maybe, more chances to win?)
Thank you
October 17, 2021 at 16:04
1. No. She should choose France.
2. No.
October 17, 2021 at 23:26
Ok thank you!
October 18, 2021 at 16:22
Hello Brit ! How are you today ?
I wish to play this year with new my wife . But She has one daughter from different father and I also have a son from different mother . So how best we can enter the program together ? We both have a valid passport . Thank you and I look forward to hear from you sir
October 19, 2021 at 02:11
You both enter and BOTH of you list the two children.
October 18, 2021 at 18:16
hello brit what about if i apply dv 2023 as unmarried only me at same time and my wife applies married + and spose is me my photo and name can we get double chance or its unqualified ?
October 19, 2021 at 02:14
Don’t lie under any circumstances.
If you are single, you could apply one time each. If you are married you can still apply one time each. So there is no advantage to lie!!!
October 18, 2021 at 18:30
Hi brit I won’t the dv 2022, I had a pass in maths and credit in English and science wil I be denied.i also have my degree.
Secondly I registered with an agent and he was honest with me for paying if I win and I agreed but I can’t pay so what do I do now can I report him.please advice me
October 19, 2021 at 02:16
So the agent told you he was going to get you to pay if you won and you were unwise enough to use the agent anyway even though it is a free and simple process to enter. Amazing. But no you can’t complain to anyone it is your own fault.
Read the FAQ about education.
October 18, 2021 at 20:14
Hi Brit! Hope you’re doing well! Is there any way I can contact you via email to ask you something about my DV entry photo? Thanks a lot!
October 19, 2021 at 02:17
NO! You don’t need to ask me anything about the photo, there are perfectly good instructions and you can ask me questions here if you still need to ask.
October 19, 2021 at 13:16
Hi Mr Simon,
Can I use my IPhone 8 to take my DV Photo please?
October 22, 2021 at 02:35
You can use any phone with a decent camera.
October 21, 2021 at 06:09
Hello dear Simon i hope you are all fine.
i have a question about the color of photo background.
if someone changes the color of photo background from blue to white by using Photoshop.
is this acceptable? please
Best regards
October 22, 2021 at 03:11
Photos should not be edited.
October 23, 2021 at 22:45
Good day
If my spouse was married before and legally divorce and she has one kid 14 years old. Should I mention that in number of children if I am the main applicant ? Even if he will not travel ? In addition should I mention him in the ds 260 form if I put 1 to the number of children in the dv application
Last question if I am citizen of an asian country but living in my spouse’s country with a residence permit the interview should be in my own country or in the country where i live today
October 24, 2021 at 17:12
Yes you should list step children in the entry and the DS260
You interview where you live.
October 25, 2021 at 12:33
Hi Brit. My neighbor wants to enter this year’s lottery. The thing is he wants to submit an application without his wife because in case of winning he plans to travel solo. I told him that he has to list his legal spouse, even if she’s not planning to go. What about a photo? Will the application go through/or refused later if he lists her but doesn’t upload her photo? Thanks.
October 28, 2021 at 15:40
He will be disqualified if he fails to list his spouse.
October 26, 2021 at 05:44
Hi Brit,
I chose university degree instead of master degree. Every thing else is correct. Did I just lost my chanse?!
October 29, 2021 at 02:30
No
October 26, 2021 at 18:31
Hi brit in filling the 2023 dv lottery I made a mistake in my passport number.instead of A2782, I entered G2782. The first letter was keyed in wrongly wil it be a problem
October 29, 2021 at 02:43
Hopefully the CO will forgive that mistake.
October 27, 2021 at 09:55
Hi, I submitted my entry using Google Chrome but instead of getting a confirmation page I got this :
Submission In Progress
Please do not leave this page until you receive a confirmation number. Your confirmation number is proof that your entry has been successfully submitted. You must retain your confirmation number in order to check your status in May.
If you do not receive a confirmation number, your entry was not successful and you must re-submit your information. Re-submission will not be counted as a duplicate entry if you did not receive a confirmation number.
Your submission is currently in the process of being submitted. To retrieve your confirmation page, please click the “Check Submission” button below
I never got got confirmation number each time i click “Check Submission” i keep getting the page where I entered my information. I later made another entry using another browser and it went smoothly I got my confirmation number. I am now afraid if I made duplicate entries or not?
October 29, 2021 at 02:52
No. You would have been warned if you had.
November 1, 2021 at 17:25
Hi Brit. Thanks for the good work you’ve been doing.
I’m entering dv 2023 as married but the system is not allowing me enter the details of my partner and my baby. And because of that I’m unable to go through the first stage.
But when I tried using the legally separated button it seems to allow me enter the details of my partner but that’s not what I want. I really need enter as married and add my partner and my baby.
Meanwhile when I also tried entering as Unmarried I was able to go through the next stage but I cancelled the whole process. I really need some clarification on this before I can submit my entry.
Regards from Ghana, West Africa.
November 3, 2021 at 20:29
I don’t know what problem you are having – so I have no advice to share.
October 28, 2021 at 07:11
Hi Brit,
I am Jordanian (born in Jordan) and I am eligible to apply but my Kids (3 yr & 1yr) were born in Canada and they are Canadian & Jordanian. What nationality and passport information shall I use for them.
October 29, 2021 at 03:02
You are not asked for their passport of nationality – only yours.
October 28, 2021 at 13:20
Good morning Sir,
I would like to apply 2023. Can we use the same photos to submit two different applications for one family( one for me as principal applicant and one for my wife as spouse of principal applicant and eligible candidate)?
Thanks and God bless you
October 29, 2021 at 03:03
Yes
November 6, 2021 at 02:32
Hi BritSimon! Thanks for your wonderful blog. So, this is a probably a silly question.
As I was getting my DV2023 application ready, I checked the photo example section and after checking the examples, I clicked on “Digital image requirements”. The information stated “Minimum acceptable dimensions are 600 x 600 pixels. Maximum acceptable dimensions are 1200 x 1200 pixels.”, so I got my picture, cropped it and submitted a picture that was about 714×714. My error was to not to click in the “Please review photo requirements for specific dimensions.” So, since it is not 600×600, does that mean I will become a hole/automatically disqualified? Thanks for your time.
