Denominations are NOT really important! If we get them it helps in grouping the people together so they would feel more comfortable and at ease. When you help people, you should not punish or inconvenience them.. That’s all. Thank you.

I’ve just entered the Dv lottery using my lost passport though it was valid til 2020. I have a photocopy of the passport details.. I pray it won’t be an issue when I get selected. And I pray I will find it before selection date. But I was trying to get a new one and it’s taking long to come out. That’s the reason I just had to use the lost passport details on the last day

Hi Brit,
my friend wants to enter the 2021 DV lottery, but his 6 months old daughter doesnot have a passport, is there any way to skip this requirement?
Thanks in advance,
I tried to go through the FAQ but I have not found any similar situation.
November 4, 2019 at 22:08
It is only the main applicant who must have a valid passport at the time of entering the DV
November 6, 2019 at 15:59
Thank you!!
November 5, 2019 at 13:39
Only the main applicant needs a passport.

I can´t finish my entry. I have been trying for hours. I have not been able to submit the form even after completing it a few times…Does this mean that I won´t be able to fill it again as I have gone through the process online? Or is it a system problem? Is it that as I have not done it sucessfully, the data is already completed and the system recognizes the info as uploaded? Thanks for your help! Have a nice day!
November 4, 2019 at 15:16
No confirmation number means no entry.
November 3, 2019 at 07:23
Hi Brit, I come across a very stupid question when entering the lottery – I just the verification code, and the message
“Session Expired
We’re sorry, your session has expired. You must complete your entry within 60 minutes of starting it. Click the link below to start your entry again.”
appears. No matter how many times or using different browsers or different devices or clearing the caches, it persists. What should I do??
Much appreciate for your timely reply.

Try again later.

Hi Britsimmon
Thank you for your continuous guidance, i have two issues regarding my family application
1. i have my cousin who is Sudanese but was born in Yemen (travel ban countries), well , we did her application with Yemen as her country of eligibility but am wondering if she won, will this exclude her from the visa or having a different nationality will pull her out of the trap. This same cousin was married (Divorced now( and she has two kids who were born in Sudan. Will the nationality of her kids grant her visa incase she won.
2. I have another case of a friend, who is living in the USA now under a political asylum case, and she wants to apply but he Sudanese passport is no longer valid and unfortunately, Embassy in Washington doesn’t issue passports (She needs to travel to sudan in order to issue a passport and because she is an asylee, she will not be able to travel
my question is there any way she can apply with the Passport Exemption part as she doesn’t satisfy anyone of these categories
Awaiting your feedback
October 31, 2019 at 18:52
1. If selected your cousin may be able to proceed if he/she has a second nationality (non banned country).
2. Not with the passport – if she has a travel document – perhaps she can use that.
October 31, 2019 at 21:21
Thank you for your reply, regarding no 2, unfortunately she doesnt have a travel document yet. any idea how to overcome this
October 31, 2019 at 23:47

October 31, 2019 at 16:05

October 31, 2019 at 15:36

October 31, 2019 at 18:46
Yes
October 30, 2019 at 23:34
Hi Simon,
1. I am unable to enter my family name as it is on my passport, because it has an ‘ő’ character in it, and the form only accepts A-Za-z letters. What should I do?
2. In the last two years I just entered my name without accents, and I wasn’t selected… is there a way to check if I was disqualified because of this issue?
Thanks in advance. Just found your blog and it is fantastic – kudos for all the work you’ve put into it!
October 31, 2019 at 17:12
1. Don’t enter special characters, accents etc.
2. That would NOT have been the problem. It is a lottery – not everyone gets selected.
November 3, 2019 at 18:00
Thanks for the answers! I’m hoping for the best this year ?
October 30, 2019 at 17:11
Trying to submit an entry, but always says page expired. Any ideas? Just too much traffic now? Thank you, Susan

Faster entry
Incognito mode in the browser
October 28, 2019 at 10:28
Hey Simon!
1) Are all digital photos required to be 300 dpi? I’m confused because it only lists the dpi requirement when talking about scanning existing photos.
2) I took my photo in sRGB color space, however my computer reads it as “RGB color space” and “sRGB color profile”. Is that okay?
Thank you!
October 28, 2019 at 21:09
1. dpi relates to PRINTING photos. The requirement is that the photo has a RESOLUTION of 600×600 pixels.
2. Yes
October 28, 2019 at 09:58

October 25, 2019 at 16:44
Hi Mr. brit I have a question for my friend who is a Dv winner 2020( I tried to read your FAQ But not found what exactly what Im looking for).
The question is about first and last names, we in most of the middle east countries dont have this setup of first and last name. our setup is just like (your given name/first name) (your father given name) ( your grandpa given name) (your grand grandpa given name) and the name in all cert. comes in that setup.
in th dv entry he used his grandpa name as family name.
1/ will this cause any problem for not using his father granpa name which is existing on all his docs?
2/ if this may cause a problem , can he correct it in the DS260.
for more illustration: suppose the full name is : Ali Mohamed Ahmed Omer ; son father grandpa grandgrandpa
in the entry he used Ali as first name, Ahmed as last name. should he fill the ds260 as what he used for entry or it is better to use Omer as last name. (his full name is on all of his documents)
Thanks!
Mohamed

Hi Brit,
I would like to ask a question regarding the place of birth. In the form, it is clearly written that “Enter birth city only. Do not enter District/County/Province/State”. I am from Kenya and I was born in a TOWN in Kenya. The place of birth indicated on my passport is the name of the county I was born and not the town. In my birth certificate, the town i was born is clearly written and also the county. Therefore my question is, while entering the lottery, should I write the name of the town I was born? If yes, it is indicated that we should enter city and not town, will it be a problem?
Lastly, just for clarification, the county that I was born does not have a city. The headquarter is a town and the place i was born is a town too and not city.
Thanks in advance.
October 24, 2019 at 16:04
City or town are the same.
October 21, 2019 at 21:56

Too vague to answer.
October 21, 2019 at 13:54
hi Simon ,
my wife won the second drow for dv 2017 and we didn’t had the 2d letter our case number was hi ، In 2018, I applied to the U.S. Embassy to obtain a visa to cover a special conference of my work and was rejected because of the consul’s vision that I may not come back and that I intend to immigrate to a previous file since 2017.
The question here is whether it affected us in the case of me or my wife selected again in 2021 because of the refusal of me made in 2018
Secondly, whether this year’s passport numbers will boost chances of winning from previous years
October 22, 2019 at 03:22
1. No problem.
2. Possibly.
October 20, 2019 at 05:19
Hi Simon,
I’m trying to submit an entry for DV2021, but I’m having some technical issues. When I fill the first form, and click submit I got connection reset. After that I entered the data again, clicked Continue, checked if the entered data is correct, and after clicking Submitt I got connection reset again instead of getting confirmation page. Now I’m not sure if my entry is submitted or not, and how can I check this
October 20, 2019 at 17:29
If you don’t get a confirmation number, your entry is not submitted.
October 19, 2019 at 19:18
Hi Simon.
Just a quick question.
I’d took a photo at a photo studio, it has a proper size and dimensions of 600×600 but when I try managing it in photo validator I just can’t seem to make it work because somehow a part of my head keeps getting out of the two ovals and I can’t make it to fill the guidance square.
My question is can I use the original photo without cutting it in the validator hence it already has all the asked requirements, size, dimention, white surface etc.
Thank you
October 19, 2019 at 21:16
You are better off using a photo larger than the required 600×600, then using the photo tool to crop the photo.
October 17, 2019 at 14:23
Hello Brit,
I tried to fill the dv forms with different browsers but last night when i clicked to submit it fails and says the site can’t reach.

Waiting to hear from you.

Hello Simon,
My aunt passed away in 2015 and and her husband passed away in 2004. Since than I have been shouldering the responsibility of her 2 under age girls. I don’t have any official adoption documents. What do I do, can I enter them as adopted. I have the death certificate of my late aunt but i don’t that of their father because he passed on the village.
October 17, 2019 at 03:31
In order to claim adoption you have to show legal adoption paperwork from at least two years earlier.

Sir I have question about entering the lottery. I have 3 daughters, one already has a green card and is married, the other daughter is 21 years old in July and the third is 18 years old. do I list all 3 or just one 18 year old daughter when applying?
October 17, 2019 at 03:08
Just the 18 year old.
October 16, 2019 at 01:12
My passport number has 10 digits but the online form would only let me put 9 digits. What should I do?
October 16, 2019 at 04:00
Drop the First digit.
October 16, 2019 at 00:16
Hi Brit,
I have four names on my passport and i don’t know how to fill both of them since there are three slots for the names; the family, first and last name.
October 16, 2019 at 03:58
If your surname is ONLY the 4th name, then you have two middle names.
October 15, 2019 at 16:11
Hello Birth
It’s possible for all applicants to have their Passport before entry?
October 15, 2019 at 19:35
No.
October 14, 2019 at 22:20
Hi Simon,
I found your blog through someone else that won the DV Lottery a couple of years ago – it has been very helpful. This is my first time entering the lottery. There are some contradicting information given on the ‘Digital Image Requirements’ website regarding the acceptable dimension of submitting a photograph. I uploaded a digital, professional photograph of myself on a white background, however re-sized and submitted it as 1200 x 1200 pixels, not 600 x 600 pixels. I ensured it was RGB, under 240kb and in a jpeg format as required. It says on the ‘Digital Image Requirements’ page that the photograph must be a minimum of 600 x 600 pixels and a maximum of 1200 x 1200 pixels – the DV Lottery instructions document state that the submitted photograph must be 600 x 600 pixels – unfortunately I did not notice this until after I submitted my entry… Do you foresee any issues with my application because of this? Thank you.

Hello Brit,
When one of the couple win with his or her family. Can he or she support his or her application with his or her spouse bank statement?
October 25, 2019 at 13:55
Hi, Simon
Something similar happened to me. I read the “Digital image requirements” which said JPEG file format, so I submitted a .jpeg file. But then read the instructions, which said .jpg. I know it’s exactly the same format, but with one more character, but I still have my doubts. Do you by any chance know if that could affect my application?
Thank you very much
Carolina
October 26, 2019 at 02:02
No it would not.

Hello Brit Simon,
Asking for a friend. He (My friend) has a wife and two kids. They live together but unfortunately, they don’t have a marriage certificate. They got married traditionally.
He would like to enter DV 2021. Should he indicate married or how can he go about it please?
Your response is highly appreciated
October 13, 2019 at 15:41
If in doubt, enter unmarried. Then if either is selected, they can have a legal marriage and both be processed.
October 13, 2019 at 07:07
Hi Brit,
I am dv2020 winner and already in process.
1. Is it good or recommended to enter again for dv2021 even though my case is already in process ?
1.1 Any risk doing so ?
2. Out of topic here, I have already submitted DS260 and also got confirmation from kcc that they’ve received documents and is ready to be scheduled when my CN (2020AS6XXX) becomes current.
I am from Nepal and Oct. VB for Nepal is already 3100. My wife got an job offer (1 year contract) from other country. In this scenario;
3. With your expertise, Any prediction when shall my CN will be scheduled.
4. Shall my wife accept job offer and leave abroad for a while until our case becomes current ?
5. what about amendments on our ds260 if she accepts the offer and returns for the interview ?
I desperately need your help here and would like to connect with you.
October 13, 2019 at 15:30
Jeez. You have been here for 2 months and in that time you have posted MANY times, each time with a long list of questions. Often the questions have been asked by others, or are easily answered by reading the FAQ. You need to read more and ask less. Put some effort in to YOUR case.
1. (answered hundreds of times to others). No problem entering again.
3. Read my articles.
4. You both can decide.
5. (answered hundreds of times to others) – since she would be abroad, she should modify the form.
October 12, 2019 at 14:11
Hi, brit, do married couples have a higher chance of winning more than us single or it’s just a random computer selection process. Or which method do they use for selection? , I just wish to know, but I already submitted my application on 10th & I dint encounter any problem . Thanks. Regards.

Hello, my questions are;
1. Are my names supposed to be in only caps when entering?
2. Is my city/town talking about my country’s capital town?
3. Is my place of birth supposed to be the one in my birth cert?
October 12, 2019 at 19:38
1. Either caps or mixed case
2. Probably.
3. Yes – were you also born somewhere else?
October 16, 2019 at 19:49

October 11, 2019 at 18:06
Pls Brit, my sister has already entered the dv2021, but i just saw a statement at the column of ”HIGHEST LEVEL OF EDUCATION” which says Vocation Schools and it’s equivalency degrees are not acceptable.
i want to be clear on this statement because my sister has completed a full course in one recorgnized vocational school in our country. upon applying for the dv she choose Vocational shool because that’s the highest certificate she is holding though she is also having High School Degree which is lower than Vocation School.
PLEASE I WANT TO KNOW IF SHE CAN BE DISQUALIFIED ON THIS BASIS.
October 11, 2019 at 21:25
NO ONE will be disqualified from the draw on the basis of what educational level they choose in the entry. NO ONE. That should be clear!
October 11, 2019 at 16:24
Hi Simon, I live in United States and recently I renewed my passport. Now, the place of issue on my passport is United States of America. On the passport section for the Country/Authority of Issuance, should I write United States or should I write the Country where I am from.
Best,
October 11, 2019 at 20:23
Your country issued your passport.
