I have created a page with a recommendation for temporary health insurance options for new immigrants., This is especially useful for the period of time when you are activating your LPR status (as you will not want to start an ACA plan) and also for the first couple of months after you arrive to settle before you get a job. It is important to have health insurance coverage so that a medical emergency does not turn into a financial disaster.
I have verified the company I am recommending is providing low cost and sensible options for new immigrants. These plans are not ideal for long term use, but offer a much better option than travel insurance from other countries.
So – check out this page on Health Insurance for new immigrants.
You can also find some information I previously posted about health insurance here.

Hi Simon, this is a question actually related to health care, unlike most of the other comments in this thread. I was in NYC 2018, had ACA for a few months and travel insurance (that covered extended stays) for the other months because I actually couldn’t afford the plans on offer once they deemed that I earned too much after my like $4,000usd earned ? I am back in Aus currently due to return just under the year (fingers crossed I don’t have too much trouble entering Hawaii), and am looking at your visitor coverage option for LA. I was slugged with a bill in NY state for not having ACA insurance the entire period I was there, and I’m hoping to avoid that this time. Are the plans you are recommending ACA approved so I don’t get slugged with another bill? I will look at the healthcare.gov plans again when I arrive, this is just for the interim. Thanks! Nicole

No – they are designed as a gap insurance only.

Hi sir my immigrant visa will expire in November but my medical will expire in September but I have very important thing to do before I can travel i will not travel before my medical expires, what can I do?will my visa be lost?thanks
July 17, 2015 at 14:11
The expiry of the visa took into account the medical, so you probably won’t have to repeat the medical. Either way, plan your travel to suit the expiry of the visa and any additional requirements would be fealty with at the POE.
July 16, 2015 at 23:19

Hi Brit. I am winner of dv lottery 2016 and one day i will be schedule for an interview with CO and i will be appearing along with husband.can u please help me with some couples interview questions because i am the principal applicant.
July 16, 2015 at 21:59
There are typically no couples questions. Most interviews last 3 or 4 minutes and only have one or two questions – so relax…
July 16, 2015 at 12:16
Hi Simon, my name is Mary Dave am from Africa. I need your help.am legally married and i won dv 2015 but when i was playing dv 2015 i never included my husband on my entry and base on that, i decided to go single which i did. I submitted all my necessary documents to KCC but unfortunately my case# were cutoff.and my husband also play dv2016 single and he wins. Am i qualify to go with him as his wife? He said if i go with him, we will be disqualify because my record is already with the American government.please help us in this process.
July 16, 2015 at 12:29
You would have been disqualified, and now, so will he. They will cross reference the information to your dv2015 ds260, and disqualification is certain because he lied on the entry when he said he was single.
July 16, 2015 at 09:45
Hi Brit. thank you ever so much for this kind of wonderful assistance you continue to give to the winner of dv program. May God give you long life. My question here is this, i play the dv lottery in October 2015 single and i get married in December 2015 and now i am a winner for dv 2016 can i include my wife on the ds 260 form or i should go single and leave my wife down because i play single? Please advice me on this. Thank you.
July 16, 2015 at 10:51
Once you marry you can add her. But either delay your interview until after the wedding or have the wedding sooner. It is much easier including her on your case, than trying to deal with this later.
July 16, 2015 at 08:47
Hello Simon,my name is Peter from West Africa i am one of the dv 2016 winner.but my scaryness here is this, my last name on my high school certificate is misspelled but on all my other documents like passport, brith certificate and on the ds 260 form, is correctly spell.will this be a problem for me at my interview with the CO? I need your help please.
July 16, 2015 at 09:04
That should not be an issue unless you are interviewing in Accra where they take such mistakes more seriously.
July 16, 2015 at 07:13
Hi, Brit. I am a winner for dv 2016 and my case # is AF00017xxx can you please tell me at what month will i be schedule for my interview? Because i have not submitted my DS 260 form yet.please help me
July 16, 2015 at 07:26
Your interview cannot be scheduled until your ds260 is submitted and processed, so, your number might be current for interview in December or January, but that could be delayed if you don’t submit your form in the next few weeks.
July 15, 2015 at 19:25
Thank you verymuch brit, for this this answered. What i was driving at is this, this lady was a winner for dv 2015 and her case number was af00081600 and she submitted her information to KCC and her case number was cutoff, if she married any another winner from dv 2016 winner, will the CO disqualify these couples because the spouse was one upon a time a dv winner?
July 15, 2015 at 18:47
Hi, Brit ,if somebody that was part of 2015 dv and their case number were cutoff, can that person pair with another person who is the winner in dv 2016? Please help me and answer that for me
July 15, 2015 at 18:52
When you say pair with, I assume you mean marru. If so the answer is yes assuming the marriage is real.
July 14, 2015 at 21:23
Hi Brit!!
We (me, my husband and our 3y old daughter) will made the first entry (POE) in september. (Thank you again for you precious help during those last months 🙂 )
We need to choose a medical insurance for the first 2-3 months..but I can’t find the “perfect” one for us.
I have a pre existing medical condition (MS) and I need a well coverage for that…Plus a coverage for the pregnancy/maternity.
Can you help me if it is not a problem for you?
Thank you!!!!
July 14, 2015 at 22:10
I would suggest an ACA plan, as you have to have great coverage from the beginning. Check heslthcare.gov.
July 13, 2015 at 07:11
All this Health Insurance is a bit overwhelming for me as there are a lot of new terms that I haven’t faced before. Seems too complex at the moment. Can someone give a rough estimate on how much a basic plan for a single person (under 30 years of age) will cost, let’s say for 6 months?
Also can one get coverage if the deadline has passed(March 31)? This confuses me.
July 13, 2015 at 09:11
If you want temp cover, follow the sponsored link. The plans are affordable and it is good to basic peace of mind. On the other hand, if you need perm coverage, then look at healthcare.gov for A CA plans. The AcA plans are more expensive.
July 18, 2015 at 23:13
Hi brit, i am winner of dv 2016 am from West Africa.i want to know whether my interview questions will come from all my document that i submitted to KCC or there will be different questions appart from the one that was submitted by me?
July 19, 2015 at 07:46
It is typically confirming your answers on the DS260…
July 12, 2015 at 14:48
thank you. and for my second question?
July 12, 2015 at 15:03
That is perfectly normal.
July 12, 2015 at 14:36

Having health insurance bought and confirmed isn’t compulsary for the interview correct? I won’t be asked to see a policy confirmation during interview? For a Australian and Canadian visa it is.
July 12, 2015 at 14:07
No, not compulsory.
July 12, 2015 at 00:34

Sadly yes it is the last VB for DV2015, so your case will not proceed further. Try again for DV2017…
