One of the blog members asked for a page solely for people to post their interview experiences. So this is it – with some rules!!!
First – NO questions on this page. Let’s keep it for interview experiences only – good and bad. I will probably delete questions to try and keep the page focused on interview experiences
Please at least mention your embassy (city and country, like Accra, Ghana) and brief details about what questions you were asked and any interesting points about documents you were asked for and any tips you can give others. This will be useful to others who have not yet had their interviews. People could use the search function to look for their embassy.

At the interview we carried the documents mentioned below.
For myself (Applicant)

6) Birth Certificate (Original + Photocopy)
7) Marriage Certificate (Original + Photocopy)
8) Certificate of Clearance (Police record from own country & Singapore Original + Photocopy)
9) Bank Statement + Property Deeds (Original + Photocopy)
10) Household registration (Original + Photocopy)
11) Employment Pass in Singapore (Original + Photocopy)

13) Photograph 2”x 2” (2 nos)
For my husband
1) Birth Certificate (Original + Photocopy)
2) Certificate of Clearance (Police record from own country & Singapore Original + Photocopy)
Our appointment was 8:45 AM and we went ahead 45 mins and waiting at the seating area for the appointment time. At the time of appointment, the staff called us to the gate and go through the security check. Electronic devices and hand-phones were kept at the counter and we can bring over our bags. After that we have to go inside and then there has another security check again. After that we were at the visa unit room.
We informed to the officer and then get the Q-number and waiting for our number to be called.
After announcing our Q-number, we have to go to the counter and then the officer check through our documents. After that asked us to settle for the visa fee and then we have to wait for another call for the interview with CO.
20 minutes later, the announcement again for our number and then we have to go the 2nd counter for interview.
The officer says Hello and then we have to make our oath. And then she was taking our finger print first.
After that she asked the following questions.
CO : Where did you meet your partner?
Me : In Singapore (Because he was from Thailand. We met here while working)
CO : What is your highest education & what is the specialisation and where you get it from?
Me : It’s Bachelor Degree & Specialisation was Mathematics. And of course I get it from my own country
CO : What is your occupation here and all your working experience was all the time same?
Me : I am a Quantity Surveyor (Q.S) as I have Diploma in Civil Engineering. Also I works as QS all my working year.
Everything was smooth until then, but my husband’s Clearance of Certificate details was different from the DS260 form. He was working in Singapore from Apr 2007 until now but the certificate is showing Oct 2008 until now.
So she said that she will reject it now as the certificate got fault and then ask us to correct it and send this together with our passports by courier service.
And she also mentioned that the processing time was 2 weeks for our visa.
So next day (7th Dec 2016) my husband went to the police station again together with all the proof showing that he was working in Singapore starting on Apr 2007. After police officer checking through the documents and their system, we finally got the correct certificate. Afternoon we successfully passed our passports and the correct certificate to the courier service.
And finally, 14th Dec 2016 we got back our passports and of course there has the visa attached to the passports.
During interview, it was a chilling moments. But everything come out well if you really are honest and sincere for your answer.
So everyone good luck.
And also I am not forget to thanks to Mr. Simon for his amazing blog and helpful information.
God Blessed You All
Best regards,
Nwe Ni

Good morning Mr Simon.once more thanks for ur help.I had My dv interview on the 6/12/2016.it was very successful.sorry I didn’t share my experience on time. My interview took place in the Yaoundé embassy Cameroon. Interview time 8am.I arrived at 7:16am and was asked by the guard to go and straw and come back at 7:30.there were many people around but far away from the embassy since people were not allow to stand or seat around the American embassy.at 7:30 we were asked to stand and form a line and those that had bags were check but those who didn’t have bags were not check.they were asked to form lines for the second security check.all these was done outside.the second security check was done inside.they were were asked to wait.so a place was given to us to seat and wait after the were through with the immigrant interview they then asked to with children to come into the hall.we were five of us with children and I was the only one who had a child but was not married.the rest were couples.we were given a number and and were called at counter one where we paid the interview fee and deposited our documents.I paid 410,000 for my daughter and I.I was then asked to go and seat.I waited for 30 minutes and was call up for finger print.I was asked to go seat again and wait for my number to be called for the interview proper.afafterome time I was called again were I did the finger and was told the system went off and so they would have to redo my finger print.so I waited like for 10 minutes and I was called for the interview.
Co:good morning.
Me:good morning.
Co: wats ur name.
Me:answer
Co:wats ur daughter’s name
Me:answer
Co:when was she born
Me:answer
Co:do u have photos of u and the baby
Me: answer.
On the pictures my daughter was asked several questions about the people on the pictures which I presented.
My daughter answer.(she is 6 years old)

She then said congrats and she gave me congratulation yellow paper with my name and that of my daughter showing pick up day which was after a week.all of my documents were kept with them including the originals. The documents I presented were :

If u don’t have ur complete documents u present it later and ur visa is granted.pls I beg of any one out the that if u are not having the advance level don’t waste ur money ur visa would not be approve. Those with working experience who did not have advance level were refuse the vise.so if u have ur advance level be sureu would have ur visa.it is very easy and simple.ddon’t be afraid. If u included some body whom u did not play with like playing alone and including ur child or spouse in the DS260 form after, there is no margic u would be disqualify. Apart from that u got married after u played or gave birth after u played but any of this before count ur self out.sorry I was not asked to take the oath. All the best to u who are still to have the interview. Courage.I got my visa already.

Nationality : Burma
Country of Chargeability : Japan (MISTAKE)
Case number : 2017AS000027xx
interview location : Tokyo, Japan
First Submission : May 26th
Second(last) submission : June10th
got 2NL: 14 Oct 2016
interview date: 5th Oct 2016
Time : 9:00am
Hope this experience will help both people who sits interview here in Tokyo and applicants from Burma.
Here is how stroy started
I tried to get there at least 30 mins earlier since it is allowed. However, I brought my docs in a backpack and they don’t allow any backpack into embassy, so I had to go out and put my backpack into locker and came back to queue again.
Note : Some embassies(at least here in Tokyo) don’t allow you to bring backpack. So you better check the embassy website before you go.
I got inside by 9. (right on my appointment time)
When I got in, I had to hand in all electronic devices. Since I brought only cellphone with me, I had to hand in that. At the entrance, I had to take the token from a lady, she marked my name on her list and gave me a token. She also gave me a clear file with two pieces of paper(1. document list, 2.address to deliver green card) and one small plastic bag to put photos inside.
I arranged the documents in order according to the piece of paper and waited for my token number, 11, to be called. There were 10 windows, 1 & 2 is for submitting documents, 3 to 5 is taking the fingerprints, 6 to 10 is for interview purpose. after 15 to 30 mins, my number was called from window 2, submitted the documents. She checked my documents and asked me to pay the visa fee, $330 in the another counter. I paid and gave the receipt back to the window 2.
And then I waited. I waited for more than an hour. Till 11, my number wasn’t called and I was starting to worried. I asked a lady, is checking people if someone needs any help, about my number wasn’t called. She said they were proceeding inside the room and will be called once everything is ready. Couple of minutes after, window 3 called my number, I went there and they took my finger prints, waited again afterward. But this time was not as long as last time.
After patiently waiting, my number was called again from window 8. I was observing COs since I have got to the interview and noticed there is a CO who doesn’t smile or anything, with a serious mask on. I was wishing that he is not my interviewer before, but unfortunately, he was the one who interviewed me. I greeted, good morning. He asked me to raise my right hand and swear and he started asking following questions.
Q. Why do you want to go to US?
A. xxx
Q. What is your highest education?
A. xxx
Q. Where did you live outside of Japan and Burma?
A. Nowhere.
Q. Where do you plan to live in US?
A. California
Q. You went to US once, was it business or travel?
A. Travel, went to meet with some friends and relatives.
Q. How are you gonna support yourself?
A. xxx
Q. How are you related with your sponsor?
A. University friend
Q. Why your birth certificate was not fully filled? Please explain.
(please note that my Birth Certificate has some blanks such as date of issue, the issue person name and so on.)
A. I asked my mom, and she told me that they didn’t fill it from the beginning, don’t know why. She said even my brother doesn’t have his name on the certificate. I was lucky to have my name on it.
Q. Was it issued when you were born?
A. Yes
And he said, “okay, there is no problem, your visa is approved, you are good to go”. However, I was a bit confused since he didn’t congratulate me and didn’t give me the ticket saying your visa is approved or anything. But I thought that should be it. And I asked, I have some questions, “there is a mistake on country of chargeability in my first form. Is it okay?”. He said, “yeah it is not a problem”. At that point I know this CO knows what he is doing and his work. So I asked again, when would I get my passport back, and he told me about a week.
Last night I got my package by post and visa package was in it.
A special thank you to Mr Simon who enlightened me from filling DS260 till interview and life in US through this blog.
I was worried sick because I made a mistake on “country of chargeability”, but Simon comforted me with his experiences and knowledge.
I was also worried about education and everything since I am not sitting interview at my home country. It turns out better than ever as long as you are honest and tell the truth about everything. Key to this process is being HONEST.
Good luck everyone, and Simon if you need any contribution to this website from me, I am here to help you answer some of questions being asked repeatly. And of course, I will donate some later as my appreciation to you.
I will came up with some questions to you about moving to US after reading your post again, if I have any. Please bear with me.
Thank you.

Embassy Interview.. Nairobi, Kenya Dec 5th 2016
Woke up at around 4:45am and whispered a word of prayer before ensuring all my documents were in order. We arrived at the embassy at 5:20 AM and already there was a long queue. The gates were opened at a round 6:15Am and we were separated; men on one side while ladies on the other line. I was the second on the line. We were ushered in through the first security check. At this point, we were asked to produce our appointment letters and the passport. We were then ushered in to the second security gate for checking. Here, the checking was abit thorough and please do not carry any coin or wear a belt that has a metal. After arriving at the embassy, we were given token numbers, which we will be called with. After waiting for around 30 minutes, I was called to window 8 and met a soft spoken lady who requested me to produce my Birth certificate, Form Four Certificate, Two passport Photos and my Passport. She asked me whether I was married, have children and I answered appropriately. After being satisfied with the documents, she asked me to pay the $330 and return the receipt to her. I did so.
She then told me to go back and wait outside. It was pretty cold outside and I waited for another 30 minutes. I was then called again to window 9 for fingerprints. The lady who took my fingerprints told me to go back and wait to be called for an interview. After about an hour or so, I was he first one to be called for a DV interview at window 7. I met a serious white American lady who did not smile under any circumstance. I tried to greet her but she never replied. She put on her headphone and switched on the microphone. This is how it went;
CO: Raise up your right hand and swear that whatever you will say is truthful and honest
Me: I did so
CO: Place your right finger on the machine
Me: I did so
CO: What is your name Sir?
Me: I replied
CO: What is your highest level of education?
M: I replied
CO: When did you finish high school?
Me: I replied
CO: What was your grade?
Me: I replied
CO: What course did you study at the University?
Me: I replied
CO: How long did it take?
Me: I replied
CO: What was your high school grade in Chemistry?
Me: I replied
CO: Who are you going to stay with in the US?
Me: I replied (at this time, I couldn’t manage the smile on my face but the CO was very serious)
CO: How did he go there? Was it the same process?
Me: I replied
CO: How are you related?
Me: I replied
CO: Okay sir, you will go and register for the DHL and pay the USCIS fee before traveling to the US. She remained with my passport.
She gave me a green sheet that contained instructions on how to register with DHL and a white sheet that contained my DoS number and Alien Number. I thanked her so much. I then asked her about my fiancée who I will marry in January and she told me that I can marry her and travel first to the United States and the file for her. She asked for her name and the date of marriage. I didn’t hear the other things she was saying because I was so happy. The other friends who followed me were given pink sheets, which stated they bring additional documents. Many thanks to Brit Simon for his advices. The embassy never even mentioned the mistakes I was thinking of. My advice; just pray, prepare yourself adequately and be confident.
Received Notification of my Visa collection at the DHL center I registered. I rushed there and picked my passport that contained the printed visa plus the sealed packed, which should not be opened.
Thanks so much BritSimon and all the moderators in this forum for your help.

Hi Brit!
I had my interview at the embassy in Bern, Switzerland, today and my visa has been approved!!!
I am over the moon and want to thank you for your efforts in helping us DV winners!!!
In short, the interview went very smoothly and I was asked to provideonly for birth certificate, police records, divorce decree in my case and highest degree, medical of course, and obviously passport;-) no i-134, no bank statements, etc….
I entered the premises at 2pm and got out at 3:15pm with an enormous smile on my face!!!!!
I will wait until my passport is returned with the visa stamped before making huge arrangements but I will celebrate tonight as there is no reason they will change their mind, right?

thank you for your time.

Embassy location: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Time of the interview: 8 am
I got to the embassy at 7 40 am, there was already a line of 10 people outside. There were IV and non-IV interviews at the time.
The appointment letter was checked to grant my access inside the Embassy.
I was given a token and noticed I was 18th in the line. Most of IV applicants were from Iran as they don’t have the US consulate in their home country. My country of eligibility is Ukraine but I’ve lived in UAE for nearly 10 years.
After about 2 hours of waiting my number was called and I approached the window to meet a not really welcoming lady who asked for my documents and I think she was quite irritated telling me to move faster passing my papers. Immediately I got frightened and started moving even slower. I had a lot of unnecessary documents, which I brought just in case. But I would do the same again if I had to. You can’t be over prepared. Finally the torture was over and I went to the finger-printing window, for which I waited 30 minutes more. After the fingerprints and 1 hour of worrying my number was called and I entered a little room where a polite CO welcomed me, gave back all the originals, asked me a few basic questions:
1. Do you reside in UAE? Yes
2.What is your occupation? Real estate broker.
3.Do you have friends in the US? Yes
4. Where? California
5. Is that where you’re going to live? Yes
Then he said it looks like I was good to go.
He congratulated me and said I will receive an email from the Embassy in about 5 days to collect my passport with a Visa. I was outside the Embassy at 12 pm.
I played in the green card lottery for 8 years and finally I got lucky. Thank you Brit for this amazing blog, it helped me so much! I wish all the best to all winners, be prepared and have a great new life in the United States!
December 6, 2016 at 10:16
P.S. After the fingerprints I paid 330$ with a debit card. I wasn’t sure if they take cards or cash. Well, in Abu Dhabi they take cards and cash in local currency and in dollars. ?

I chuckled at this story. Thanks!

Hi Simon,
I haven’t seen any interview experiences related on your blog yet for the Embassy in Paris so I’ll had mine:
Date: November 2016.
Documents given to the officer: medical results, birth certificate, passport, various diplomas, police records. Nothing else. (no I-134, no bank statements, no job offers, no relatives in the US).
The interview lasted around 3 minutes at the most:
Officer: ” Please raise your right hand: Do you swear that all the documents presented here are legitimate?”
Me: “I solemnly swear” (just to sound like beloved Obama)
Officer: “wha did you apply to the lottery?”
Me: “when?” (couldn’t hear well the right speaker, my eyebrows pointing to the roof)
Officer: “no…Why?”
Me: ” ohh, because bla bla bla”.
Officer: “Is this the original of your birth certificate?”
Me: “yes, I have another one here if needed”.
Officer: “Can I see the original of your degree diploma”? (He only had the copy).
Me: “here it is.”
Officer, 2 minutes later: “Ok, your visa is approved!”
Me, with big smile, “thank you Sir.”
He did not asked me where I planned to go in the US, with whom I planned to live with, what kind of job I was looking at.
Simon, thank you very very much for your help. I would only emphasize to futur french dv winners to absolutely enter their Embassy interview date on the following website https://ais.usvisa-info.com/fr-fr/iv as soon as they have the 2nd confirmation letter.
I almost missed that step and it’s a requirement to actually enter the Embassy.
Cheers, and thanks again,
FLB.

Approved in Auckland, New Zealand.
Here’s my experience:
I arrived at the Consulate at 9:10am for my 9:30am appointment. However, I was turned away at the security check because I was too early. I went away, came back and proceeded through security. Inside, I was directed to a window where I spoke with a very lovely lady who took my finger prints, talked me through the process and ensured I had all the correct documents. She took my Passport, CV, and bank statements from me and added them to my file. As I am under 26 years old, she provided me with a form to sign which indicated my acknowledgement of my duty to register for Selective Service. I was then directed to another window to pay my NZ$495 interview fee. Once this was paid, I took a seat and waited for my name to be called. The interview windows are right in the waiting area, so for the next 45 minutes I listened as person after person was either approved or denied for various types of visas. It’s a bit uncomfortable when people are asked questions about their criminal history or financial troubles in front of a full waiting room… Finally I was called to an interview window. One set of finger prints were taken again and I was asked to raise my right hand and swear that my application was truthful. I was then asked the following questions: Why do you want to move to the US? Where do you want to move? What’s your highest level of education? What sort of work will you do in the US? Once I answered these questions, he said “Your visa has been approved, welcome to the United States”. With a big smile on face, I thanked the man and left to celebrate and start planing!

It has happened before.

Simon, when do we have to pay this 165$ fee and where, at the embassy?
November 19, 2016 at 06:40
I would like to share my interview experience as this forum helped me a lot to go through my DV 2017 process up to the point where I now have my visa.
I am from Cameroon and my visa was scheduled at the U.S. Embassy in yaounde at 7:30am. November 15.
I arrived the embassy at about 6:50am. Meet others there who had their own issues to be handled. The doors where not open till 7:00 even if you came at 5:00am I pity you for the standing lol
At exactly 7:00 the firs were opened for check in. Got to the first stage our passports were asked to see if you are actually scheduled that day. Phones not allowed and were taken during this initial stage. Went into the next stage presented our passports again. And the guards there told us to sit outside as the hall was already full. So every DV winner sat outside. That was when I realized we were we were just 5 of us for the DV process. 1 couple and the rest singles two boys two girls. Hmmmm?????
We sat outside for about 30 minutes before we were called to pay the visa fees. We all did but was asked to sit outside. That was when we noticed we were going to be the last to be interviewed. Hmm while outside the first person came out smiling. We the DV winners knew it was going to be a great day and a blessing. God never sleeps. I just love Jesus so much cause when he opens the door no one can close it. Later we were called to come inside as people had taken their visa and were going home happy.
Cut the story short. When it was out turn they called according to numbers. By this time, the hall was empty. We really were panicking. The First Lady called me asked I give the photocopy of just my birthday certificate and passport. I was really worried then cause I read where others said they had to present photocopy of all documents. Two each including the ds260 and invitation letter ???. I was extra prepared. Only to realize at the cash office they took all my originals but no photocopies ???????????I was scared man. I stated asking the others I was told they took theirs. But the other girl said her situation was the same. That was when I relaxed again. So at the second desk I was asked only photocopy of birth certificate and passport this time they took that girls documents. Well. While I was there I had to extend my eyes further ???. There I saw they wrote ok in a form with capital letters. I was again happy. She took that and asked me to sit again later called for my phone number.
Window 3 now. Hmmm tension. Those couples were the first that got their visa approved. This was the beginning of breakthrough. We were all happy. The second guy was also approved ???????????? I was the third in line.
CO: good afternoon
Me: good afternoon
CO: where is ……..
Me: it’s my village in ……
CO: in the initial entry you put ….. As place of birth but your birthday certificate is something else
After checking age realized she had not checked well. She said ah ok this is it you were correct Then my heart was pounding. This people had every way to catch someone. Look at me that knew I was clean all round.
CO: with whom are you going to stay with in U.S.
Me: family friend
CO ok
CO: what you intern to do in the USA
Me: …..
CO: are you married
Me: no
CO: ok your visa has been approved congratulations. You can pass by on the 17 and collect your visa package
Wow. I was more than happy I could hear the others also shouting behind. Three so far had been accepted upon. Wow. I left the place didn’t wait for the others I just was so happy and thankful to God for this process of patients and trials cause it was not really easy
On the 17 of November went and collected my passport. Saw the others that was when we realized that all of us that day made it through the interview. Now I have my visa at hand.
First I give thanks to the almighty Jesus Christ for the door that God has opened no man can shut. Then thank you Brit for this wonderful site I can’t reward you for your kindness to us all but I believe with the sincerity of my heart your pocket will never run dry. You will have money and gods guidance from individuals you did not dream would know you. In Jesus name.
I shared my experience so that others will also benefit just as I also benefited from others.
Word of advice like what Brit said you should always be prepared never tell a lie. Those people see even the least thing you didn’t know they knew.
My documents were from ordinary level to postgraduate diploma. Medical sealed as I did it but in Douala. Non conviction and two passport size photographs of 5*5. Ds 260 form . I took the invitation letter but it was given back to me. In fact all the things I did photocopy of were returned back to me. My case was so special. God was, is and will still forever be involved in my case.
Thank you all and thank my destiny helpers for being there my lovely sweetim.
NB case number AF201700012….
Thank you and I wish you all the best as that Tuesday was a blessing to all of us that part took at the interview so will your day be to. Amen.

Hi guys, I was randomly selected for dv2017, my interview was on Tuesday November 6th at the US EMBASSY ABU DHABI (I have an employment resident visa in the UAE), it was quick, very regular questions that I have already answered in the forms, such as: did you get married, did you get any other citizenship other than the Tunisian one (I am Tunisian)…and then the officer asked me to come back with the original diplomas just to see them, I went back last Tuesday November 15th, they took my original diplomas and my original passport and they told me that it will take 10 to 15 days…but I just received today evening “Thursday November 17th” an email saying that my documentation has been sent back and that I will be able to collect it, doest it mean it’s rejected? Thanks for answering if you have any idea.
November 17, 2016 at 23:59
It doesn’t mean that. You just have to wait and see what they send.

November 9, 2016 at 12:41
Hi Brit,
First of all I would like to thank you as your posts supported me lot to be prepare for the interview. I would like to share my interview experience with others.
Case Number: AS4XX
Interview Date: 3 Nov 2016
Embassy: Colombo, Sri Lanka
Time: 1.00 pm
I went to the US embassy around 12pm (1 hour before my interview) and informed to the security guard that I’m having an interview at 1pm. Then the security guard said we are taking people in sharp at 1.00pm and better go somewhere and come back around 12.45pm. I went to security point around 12.45pm and there was a family (Husband, wife and a kid) on the queue in front of me. At the gate security they kept my phone and gave me a tag to keep with me to get the phone back when I’m returning. I entered from the main door of the embassy and there was another security point and given me a token. When I was arriving, there was only the above mentioned family at that place. Time was around 1.15pm. As the mentioned family came in before me they have taken first. Later my token number displayed on the screen and I went to counter number 2 to submit my documents. There was a pleasant lady at the counter with a file, there is a printed paper pasted with some details and photo on that file. But I noticed that was not my photo, I informed to the lady at the counter that was not my picture, she replied that’s what she is also wondering about that and noticed that’s someone else file. She went in and bought my file. First she was asking my passport, birth certificate originals and translations, I-134 with the required documents, I had 2 sponsors ready and one sponsor’s some documents were not with me as they requested. Then the lady was asking the address I have mentioned when filling the form? I said the sponsor with the lesser documents. Then she said she will use documents from both of sponsors, one as a sponsor and the other one as per my US address. All went well there. Then my token number displayed on the screen to pay the visa fee, good that I had some extra cash with me, the visa fee has increased than the mentioned amount on the embassy check list as per the exchange rate has changed. I was waiting with the other family at the waiting area and their taken number has called before me as they came earlier than me. They went in to room number 5, that’s a closed room and we cannot see anything inside. After 10mins they came out, I was asking them has it finished? Then the guy said no. My number has displayed on the screen and I went to room number 5, once I saw the visa officer I surprised, I have seen him outside of the embassy when I was arriving to the security point before I entered to the premises. The interview questions as follows.
CO – Hello, how are you
Me – Good thank you
CO – What are you doing?
Me – XXXXXXX
CO – What is the company you are working for?
Me – XXXXXX
CO – How do you know your sponsor?
Me – Family friend
CO – Which state your sponsor stays?
Me – XXXXXXX
Then the CO was checking my documents again, especially police report, there were 2 police reports of me as I stayed in UK for 4 years.
CO – Have you stayed abroad?
Me – Yes, I was in London
CO – What did you do there?
Me – XXXXXX
CO – How long have you stayed there?
Me – XXXXX (mentioned the duration and the time period)
CO – What is the name of the company you are working for?
Me – Company name and the place I mentioned
CO – Congratulation you have been granted visa to go the United State of America.
Me – Thank you so much (I was over the moon that time)
The CO gave me a yellow colored paper and it mentioned come and collect your passport on 10th (exactly after a week from the date)
Once I’m coming out side from the interview roomk, still the above mentioned family was there with a yellow colored paper.
I had a chat with them and they showed me the yellow colored paper on their hand, it says they put in to the administration process and will let them know when it’s ready. I noticed they have referred only the check list provided from the embassy for the required documents. They haven’t referred any of the forums such as Britsimonsysy.com or any other.
Moral of the story – Be well prepared before the interview, be honest and truthful when you are facing the CO. Refer the supporting materials and etc…. As Simon saying always this is the process that checking your patience, how the things you are handling and how important this is to your life.
Thank you very much Brit for all the posts and GOOD LUCK to others who will face interviews in the future.

And relax cause u r not fighting any war.
Thank u once more belove brit for everything.

Yeah I know. I’m open to residing in the US permanently. It’s just a bit hard when you have a spouse that isn’t on the same page as you are… I’m hopeful he’ll come around and we can move together. Otherwise I guess it’ll be me sacrificing my GC to remain married… I’m aware that he’ll lose his GC if he doesn’t spend majority of a year in the US, and so he should. I will also make sure to file my taxes in both countries once we activate. ? Thanks for your help.

Hi Britsimon,
My green card was granted this morning! Thank you so much for this wonderful resource and all the assistance you provide to green card hopefuls!
My case number was Oceania 3**, had my interview scheduled for 9.15am this morning in Sydney. The following occured:
Walked to the interview, left my electronics including watch and phone in my suitcase at the hotel, so I’m not 100% about the time, but I think we arrived at the consulate about 8.50am. We went to the building yesterday so we knew where we were going and wouldn’t get lost when it matters. Clicked this fancy TouchPad near the lifts which said “US embassy”. It thrn announces lift E. So we went into lift E, no buttons, it just goes straight up to 10. Got out, walked towards the right past a doctor and dental clinic and saw the security section, a security guard asked if we had mobile phones, we said no as we’d followed the instrucations and left them at he hotel. He seemed surprised. We went inside to the left to a table with two people. We were asked to hand over our paperwork. They did my husbands first and then mine. She took all of the paperclips off my paperwork (holding the original and copy together) and took only one of the photos and put them all into a clear sleeve each with the passport open to the photo page with one of the photos at the front. She gave me the resume (which the consulate document from the US site listed as a requirement, but it’s obviously not) and gave everything else not on the list they email you back to me. She took my bank and tax documents for proof of no public charge and put them in the slip but you could tell this wasn’t necessary paperwork. She handed us these and we walked a few metres to go through the metal detector. The security guard made a big deal about electronics and didn’t seem to believe me when I said I had none. Went through, asked to take anything I would need at the consulate from my bag and they took it and put it in a cubby and gave us a ticket with a number to collect later. Sat down and waited for the lift. A security guard told us it was here, got in and went up to the consulate floor. Got out, went to a window counter to the right, he asked for passports, they were provided and he asked what time our appointment was, I said 9.15. He said go through the door to my right, take a ticket for the visa right in front of you and sit down and wait for our number to be called.
Went inside, took ticket, sat down. Waited maybe 6 minutes and were called to a window. Handed over plastic sleeves with documents. She asked for my finger prints, four fingers together on right hand, then left, then both thumbs together. Then my husband. She tore off the slip at the bottom of the document list they email you and told us to go to the cashier at counter 8 to pay the fee and then come back to her counter. We did. She must have gone through the documents while we were gone. She handed me the not necessarily ones and said take a seat and your number will be called for your interview. Sat back down, maybe 7 minutes later we were called over the speaker to counter one.
I was expecting a sit down interview, but again it was at a counter behind glass. The guy asked us to take an oath holding up our right hand. He asks me whether I’ve applied for the DV lottery before, I said this was my fourth time from memory, he laughed and said fourth time the charm. He asked me what my highest level of education is, I said I have two bachelor’s degrees. He typed this in. He asked whether we had any children and I said no. He asked whether we have lived anywhere else aside from Australia for more than a year and I said no. He said your visa is approved, expect it via courier in the next week.
It literally took about 30 minutes. Maybe even slightly less. I brought a book with me and read maybe one page.
Very excited! My husband still isn’t sure if he’ll come with me or if we’ll live apart for a few years because of his career here (I don’t think I’ll migrate permanently… Two weeks holiday a year is a bit rubbish when I get 4 weeks in Australia) but we’ve got some time to figure it all out.
Now we just need to work out where we want to go to activate it. I’m thinking Hawaii.
One piece of advise to anyone in relation to the medical, we did it 3 weeks out from the interview, I was thinking we could do it two weeks before to get as much validity as possible before we had to activate the visa, but my husbands blood test came back false positive so he had to redo it a week after the medical date. We picked it up from Brisbane on Friday when we flew to Sydney early Monday. So we would have screwed ourselves if we didn’t do it three weeks before. Keep that in mind, tests may need to be redone and that takes time.
Thanks again Britsimon for all of your help!
November 8, 2016 at 01:38
Thanks for that detailed account on the interview. The one thing I would say is that LPR status comes with rights AND obligations. So – please understand that the obligations (such as tax filing) start on the day you activate your LPR status. The GC is good for someone that wants to live in the USA, but if you are just using it as a super visitors visa the downsides will make it not worth it.

Hi Brit,
My interview is a month away!
Do you know of any applicants interviewed in Bern (Switzerland)? I cannot find any whether on you blog or on others..
I would like to learn about their experience!
Thanks!
November 6, 2016 at 19:22
No, I have not seen any examples from there. Treat it like any of the big Euro embassies London etc.
November 6, 2016 at 19:24
Will do! thank you!
November 6, 2016 at 11:30
Hi Brit
I have my interview experience but I am a 2017 winner and I am not in your region.
Do you have a 2017 experience blog? This one is the only one that I have found.
Btw my experience was in the Caribbean on the island of Barbados.
I thought I would share because you helped me all the way from the time I was selected I statred reading your posts.
So…can you direct me to the site for 2017 winner experience?
Thanks

This is the correct page for interview experience stories. The interviews don’t change year to year – so it doesn’t need to be separated by year.
November 6, 2016 at 20:37
Hi Brit
This is my story/ experience.
2017 winner.
MY husband won.
Embassy is Barbados (for those who dont know it is in the caribbean).
We had to travel to Barbados for our appointment. WE live in the British virgin islands but our coubtry is Dominica.
We got our second letter in August and our number was 2017SA14x. Our date was October 5.
We gathered all our documents. We even had our affidavit.
Our medicals were done 2 days before the appointment which was at 8am.
WE arrived there about 7 30 and we were ushered to the room to pay. WE were asked to sit and wait. WHile seated someone was being interviewed and was asked several questions and that took almost an hour. WE had no idea what we would be asked but we went prepared.
Finally we were called and the lady asked us for my husband birth certificate and his prrof of qualification and our marriage certificate. ALso our medicals and my birth certificate. THen we were instructed to sit and wait.
After about 20 minutes the officer called our names. THis is what happened
Officer. Congratulations sir on hitting the jack pot.
Husband. THanks
Officer. BOth of you please raise your right hand and repeat after me.
We both did.
OFficer to my husband…….so how long have you been in the public service
Husband. …..practically all my career.
Officer. HOw do you like Ottawa Canada..
HUsband. OH…this is like home to me. PRetty cold but I love it.
Officer.. well I worked there for 2 years and it is a cool place.
Officer. SO tell me sir. How many places have you lived besides your home country.
Husband. ST lucia canada etc.
Officer. MAam how are you doing
Me. I am pretty good
Officer. HAve you lived all those places also
Me. EVerywhere else with my husband except for st lucia.
Officer one at a time place your right thumb on the scan
We did.
Officer. OK…do you all have to travel to the united states soon
Me. YEp I have a medical in 2 weeks. ANd we are leaving Barbados tomorrow but will not get home before the end of next week.
Officer……ok. I will not cancel your visa now. When you go to the US the immigration officer will see that you have an application on file pending. Just explain to him your plans and he will accomodate you. AS soon as you get back please send your passport to us and we will issue visa.
Me. THanks
Officer. HAve a great day guys and enjoy your trip back home.
I must add that he saw on my file that I am a frequent visitor and he saw no problem not to cancel to allow me to travel. BUT he cancelled my husband visa because he had no travel plans.
This is the end of interview. WE were not asked any qyestions that was difficult. THe officer was friendly and we were relaxed. WE just took the advice on the blog and get there prepared. ANd we were not asked for the affidavit. We also had bank statements just incase.
AFter I returned from the US I sent the passports via DHL and within 10 days we got our package….The rest is easy because we r paying the fees online today.
Thanks Brits for all the information. YOu are very patient. I will continue to follow the blog. Your blog helped me………us to be prepared although you were giving information on areas far away from my location.
I travel to the states very often and so it is not a new adventure but a new begining.
Thanks once again

November 5, 2016 at 13:59
Hello all,
I’m a couple of weeks late in writing my experience, but I think I should write it, as it could help others. Our story has a sad beginning, but a happy ending.
First, the details: I am from Brazil for the DV, living in Germany and married to a Russian girl. We both registered for the DV and I won, using Russia as the country of eligibility. We had our interview in Frankfurt a few weeks ago.
After paying the visa fees we waited a few minutes until someone called us for a preliminary check of our documents. The lady started speaking in German, but I asked her to switch to English, since although I speak German I am more comfortable with English. I told her “Would it be ok if we spoke in English, because my wife and I are not German?” to which she replied (still in German): “If you are not German we should end this interview right now!”. As you can imagine, I was quite shocked and did not understand why such a behavior. Then she showed us a piece of paper saying that, when filling out the original DV entry form, I had selected Germany as my country of birth. I was then even more shocked and confused, as I did not recall making such a mistake. I firmly said “No! I did not select Germany!”. After that she left us and went to talk to someone else in the consulate about our case.
After a couple of minutes she came back, a little bit more polite and explained to us that this mistake would most certainly cause our disqualification. She said she would anyway go through our documentation, but that she could not guarantee anything.
After she was done, she asked us to sit down and wait for the “actual” interview with the CO. He called us some 15 minutes later and said that we had a 99.9% chance of disqualification due to our mistake. He asked a couple of questions about our marriage, how we met and educational background. Then he gave us a denial sheet saying that, unless we could produce proof showing that I selected the correct country of birth on my e-DV form, we would be disqualified.
We left the Consulate completely sad. We went back home and I tried to find proof that I had selected the correct country of birth, but the eDV confirmation page has only the country of chargeability.
I started researching and I found a post here on Britsimonsays where a person had made a mistake in the country of chargeability (not the country of birth, like me) and Simon had replied saying that, in that case, the country the person had wrongly selected was still in the same region (Europe) as the correct country and that, since this mistake had not increased her odds of winning the lottery, it could still be accepted by the Embassy/Consulate.
That’s when I had an idea to write a letter to the CO arguing that my mistake had not been premeditated and that, even with that mistake, Germany and Russia are still in the European region and that did not increase my chances of winning. I also said that the DV Guidelines (as described in the INA) do not require the disqualification of an entrant due to the a mistake in the country of birth (in fact, the guideline doesn’t even mention that case). It was a long shot, I knew, but we posted the letter anyway and waited.
I am happy to say that it worked! They received our letter and after 2 weeks, we got a package with our visas.
This was in no small part thanks to Simon’s website and all the information contained here.
Good luck to all of you who will be having interviews for the DV. (If you want a little more than luck, just print out the whole DV Guideline and take with you to the interview, just in case) 🙂
November 5, 2016 at 14:25
I’m glad you found the correct information at the right time to save your case. If they had rejected the case (which would have been wrong – but still possible) there is no appeal – so yes – being well prepared for the interview is crucial.
November 5, 2016 at 07:42
Hi again awesome Brit,
Can you add a new blog about DV 2017 interview experience stories. This has been old and not everyone might see it..
Wish you a great day
November 5, 2016 at 14:05
I am working on a better way to show people older articles – because people keep asking the same things I have already covered.
November 3, 2016 at 16:35
Hi Brit. I have sworn affidavit to correct the discrepancy in my name since in my country that is the only way to authenticate a name. As I indicated to you some months ago, All my documents are having two names registered on them except my Srnior High that has three names. Will this be a problem to me? Thanks.
November 3, 2016 at 17:43
I don’t know for sure.
November 4, 2016 at 19:21
Brit Im having the same problem my first name and surname are intact just a suffix missing from some of my documents.I read the DS260 has a part that allows for aliases that appear on some documents to be entered.would an affidavit be proper rather in this case?,or there,s no problem at all?.
November 4, 2016 at 20:15
The DS260 is a sworn statement – it is as convincing as an affidavit.
November 1, 2016 at 13:04
Hi Sir,
I have two questions in mind that ready bothering me sir, why filings the
DS 260 online this is the questions
.
1. Do you authorize disclosure of information from this form to the Department of Homeland Security, the Social Security Administration, and such other U.S. Government agencies as may be required for the purposes of assigning you a social security number (SSN) and issuing you a Social Security card and do you authorize the Social Security Administration to share your SSN with the Department of Homeland Security? Yes Or No
2. Do you have documentation to establish that you have received vaccinations in accordance with U.S. law? Yes Or No
November 1, 2016 at 13:52
1. They are asking if they should apply for a SSN fot you. Most people say yes.
2. Answer no.

Abu Dhabi Embassy
First of all, I want to thank Simon and this wonderful site for all true and reliable informations.
Our interview was delayed by the Embassy with a phone call. I suggest you ask via e-mail for a confirmation of the new appointment.
The time spent at the Embassy was 2.5 hours.
The first step was the security check at the entrance where the officer checked the passports and the appointment letter. As per their requirements, devices are not allowed so we decided to leave all in the car. We had only documents.
After that we walked into the room where already at 8 am expecting 7 people.
Throughout that morning we were 13 and on that day were processed only immigrant visa.
Around 8:15 or so, they have started calling the first numbers, like the post office. At our turn, we delivered the original documents along with translations, before with those of the principal applicant (such as educational qualifications, birth certificate, police certificates, etc.) and then the same for those of my wife. Do not forget to bring copies of passports of all applicants, as they will be asked.
After checking everything, the lady not really friendly, even asked us the bank statement that we had with us.
At the end, she told us that we would have returned the originals after the interview. (I noted that she put the sticker of the empost on the passport and this gave me an hope.)
At the second step we paid the fee for two people, in a different counter, 660 $.
A the third step, we took fingerprints, fairly quickly between the two things.
At the fourth step, where anxiety was felt most clearly, they accomodated us all in an area where one at a time was called for the interview in a separate room.
At our turn welcomed us a very kind lady, there was also an awkward stage as my husband accidentally hit my foot and I expressed my pain. (a funny moment)
Apart from that, before start with questions, took again fingerprints, then she asked us to take an oath and started with the classic questions read on this site:
How long have you been in UAE?
What do you want to do in USA?
Have you friends or relatives in the US?
Which cities have you visited and for how long?
More than an interview been a dialogue and took around 3 or 4 minutes.
At the end, has told us that in two or three days we will received an email when pick-up the passports. At that point she delivered the paper with written congratulations with a big smile. We thanked and expressed our gratitude and we went away happy and excited by the Embassy.
After 3 days of waiting we got the passports.
I recommed to be prepared and be well informed.
Good luck to all

By the way – be careful where you move as brick built houses don’t exist (or are rare) in most of the USA.

Brussels embassy
I had my interview on Oct 13th 2016 in Brussels; everything went super smoothly and the whole thing took about 1.5hr.
Appointment was at 2PM, we got there 15 min in advance, took us about 15 min to get through security. I was with my wife and 8 year old son.
It was not our 1st rodeo as we had been granted L1-2 Visas at the same embassy 3 years ago. The procedure is not exactly the same but at least we knew what to expect and it was familiar territory to us. One difference is that our son had to be present this time but he behaved and everyone was very friendly with him.
Somehow I really like the atmosphere of the place. There is a TV on with the US news, pictures of Obama, Kerry and Biden… there are some color pencils for the kids and pictures of animals from the different US states… It is not a fun place by any means but it feels like you are already there.
One piece of advice, you will be asked to leave your phone at the security check. While this is expected, I will recommend that you take a minute to ask yourself if you are certain that you will not need anything that might be stored on it before you hand it over. A phone number, and address or some reference. We all come to rely on these devices so much that we find ourselves at a loss once we no longer have them.
The procedure is broken down in 3 steps. One thing worth noting is that every step is done at a counter much like in a bank – do not expect to be seated in an office.
1st step and 1st counter – the documents – we had to produce: passports, the medical exam results, birth certificates, marriage certificate, criminal records (only for the adults), highest diploma (for the main applicant only), 1 picture, then they took our finger prints (only the adults). All the documents had to be originals + 1 copy. They only kept the copies except for the criminal record. We also had a military service certificate ready but we were told this was no longer required as per a recent change.
2nd step and counter #2 – the payment, 330 USD / person. I paid with a Credit card – not sure if they take cash but note that they do not take Debit.
3rd step and counter #3 – the interview with the consul. I was asked to swear the oath that I was telling the truth, and my wife the same. More finger prints – this time my son was allowed to place his hand on the device too. A small gesture but a very kind one, they did not actually take his prints but he immediately felt involved. I was asked to confirm my birth place, if I had stayed abroad for extended periods – we had stayed in the US for 2 years – confirm my highest level of education. My wife was asked the same questions save for the education one. My son was also asked the same questions – again, I could not tell if it was mandatory procedure or just to entertain him. Since my son speaks a perfect English he could answer easily. All the while the consul was asking us questions she was going through our documents. At some point she grabbed our passports and placed a large stamp on our L1/2 visas to cancel them. My son asked what she was doing and she answered that she was cancelling our Visas.. he asked why and I replied “because we got better ones now”. As I was saying this, it ocurred to me that nothing was done yet so I quickly added “well, at least I hope we do”.
The consul kept smiling and told my son that his dad was a very lucky man for winning the lottery, she then asked us who was the most responsible person in the family. After a quick hesitation I pointed at my wife, that is when she handed her some receipts tickets and said “there you go, you can come and pick up the “upgrades” in a week from now”.
It took me a few seconds to compose myself and articulate a thank you.
And that was it.
We were very well prepared, my wife and I did every preparation step together, every online submission. Each step of the way we took our time to read every piece of instruction until we were confident about every answer.
This does not mean we did not have our doubts. This is where this website helped us tremendously. I think the most confusing thing in this process is the absence of clear communication on when we should expect to hear back from the immigration… the second notice, when will the interview be scheduled. Granted, it is not an exact science but having a general idea means a lot. Another thing that helps is to realize that we are not alone in this.
Thank you Simon for the work you do here, your website makes a huge difference.

Hello Simon, I want to say a sincere thank you for all of the assistance that you have provided through this journey. My wife and I had our interviews today in Montreal, and we were successful at obtaining our visas. We got the “visas are approved” speech that we were anticipating. As you mentioned in another post, as long as you have all the documents and you meet the eligibility requirements, there is nothing to be nervous about. My case number was 2017SA00000XXX.
I will post in detail my experience today, in a later post this evening. Off to have a cold one! Thanks again sir!
October 13, 2016 at 16:19
Congrats. I have enjoyed answering your frequent questions and look forward to reading the interview experience!!!
October 13, 2016 at 21:09
Ok, so as promised, here goes:
Montreal embassy
Interview was at 8:30AM today. Got there at 7:30AM and had to line up outside of the building in a line designated for non-immigrant and immigrant visa applicants. Waited in line for about 20 minutes then it was finally my turn to enter the building. The security turned away anyone who had a bag (men), as bags were not allowed into the building. Also, there was a man ahead of me who came with a female and another gentleman. The security guard asked them (one man and the woman) to remain outside because they did not have an appointment (the appointment was for one individual only).
When I got to the front of the line, my wife and I were ushered inside. I had to give the interview confirmation letter, and both of our passports. They confirmed our information in the system, and stuck a piece of paper to the back of both of our passports.
We were then given back the passports, a number, a listing showing the order in which the documents were to be prepared (this list and order was fairly similar to that of the website), and we had to go through a security scanner (similar to that of an airport). You are not allowed to take any cellphones into the building. My phone was taken away from me and held in safekeeping until after my interview.
We then had to go upstairs where we sat down in the “immigrant visa” section until our number was called. We waited for about 30 minutes before our number was called. We went up to the window, and the primary applicant was asked to identify themselves (which was me). She asked if this had been my first marriage and also whether I had any kids. She then started to ask for my documents (not in the order shown on the paper that we got when we entered the building – the order was totally different). After giving all the documents, my wife was asked for specific documents as well (nothing surprising because these documents were listed on the website as documents that we needed to bring to the interview). The one thing that I would recommend is that any documents that both you and your wife share (such as a marriage certificate), you should make two photocopies – one copy goes with each persons documents. This is not listed on the website. After my wife gave all her documents, we were asked to pay the processing fee, which we did. After we paid the fee, we sat down for about 1 minute and our number was called to the same window that we submitted all of our documents. We were then each asked to give our fingerprints. After doing so, we were asked to sit down again to wait on the interviewer to call our number. We sat for about 20 minutes, then called to a small room.
In this room, the interviewer (CO) asked us to take an oath to tell the truth during the interview, and also confirming that all the documents provided were truthful. He also asked us each to provide fingerprints again, using his scanner. He then proceeded to ask basic questions (such as the length of time that I spent in the US, my highest level of education, the different visas that I held for the US – since I had gone to school there, I once had an F1, then OPT, then H1B). Asked about my current occupation. Asked why we wanted to settle in the US. Asked if I had ever overstayed any of my visas. The CO then asked my wife about her longest stay in the US. He also asked her about her highest level of education, and where she completed her highest level of education.
He started typing some information into the computer, and explained to me that he was inputting all the information that I said to him and that it would not take too long. After about 30 seconds, he then said that the visas were approved, and “welcome to the United States”. We were ecstatic! He gave me back the original documents that were collected and handed me a paper with instructions on setting up the courier to mail our passports back to us. I had already done so beforehand. He said that we should get the passports back within two weeks with the visas.
That was it! I was a bit surprised that they never asked for or took the affidavit (I-134), nor did they ask for any documents proving that I would not be a public charge. I do not know if having a US Bachelor’s and Master’s degree was the reason. They used my education to qualify me so they did not ask for any of my prior employment letters.
The entire process took about 2.5 hours, from the time that we arrived to the time that we left the building. The actual interview took about 5-7 minutes. We skipped out of there very happy campers.
As Simon has said, once you meet the eligibility requirements, have all the documents that they have asked for (make sure to read the embassy specific requirements because each embassy has specific and different requirements as it relates to documents), have no criminal background (including no visa overstays), then you should be fine. The CO was quite pleasant, and although he threw in a few questions to which he already had answers based on my completed DS-260 and also my documents submitted, he did make the process fairly smooth and relaxed. Make sure to also walk with two photographs, as per the website. I saw a few people who had to use the photo booth downstairs the building because they did not walk with the requested photos.
All in all, that was it! I am happy to post this, as I have not seen anyone else posting on their experience at the Montreal consulate. I’d be happy to provide more information to anyone who may need it. I will continue following up here.
Thanks Simon for everything. I know that I had tons of questions because I knew nothing about the DV Lottery process, except that I had submitted my application and that I had won. This site provided me with every single step by step information that I needed.
Thanks everyone, and all the best!!
October 14, 2016 at 01:17
Awesome. I’m going to edit your post to add the Montreal embassy.
In your case with a US education, and H1B employment history there is no concern of public charge. I have heard other interviews in Montreal where the CO asked for the I-134.
October 14, 2016 at 01:22
Ohh ok…makes sense.
October 12, 2016 at 10:10
What to do when they say u “we did’t decide to give u visa or not until september 30 so that dv 2016 expires”
October 12, 2016 at 18:15
There is nothing to do. You just have to accept the decision.
October 11, 2016 at 06:30
I haven’t found anywhere are they keeping our documents for their archive or they get it back to us after the interview?
October 11, 2016 at 23:23
They keep documents – that’s why they ask you to provide originals and photocopies./

US Consulate: Auckland, New Zealand
DV-2017 winner
Interview Date: 4th October, 2016
Outcome: Visa Approved
Hello All,
I thought I would share my interview experience with everyone on this forum. First of all, enormous thanks to BritSimon for putting together this website. I found it to be a valuable resource for my journey from the time I first applied for the DV lottery to this point in time. Hats off to you BritSimon.
Second, I used the advice provided by others to prepare for my interview as well – many thanks to you as well. As a result, like many of the posters on this forum, my interview experience was smooth sailing – i.e. the case officers are friendly, the interview questions are easy and not an interrogation.
However, I do feel that WITHOUT being fully prepared, the experience could be frustrating for others.
In summary, these were the key things to my success at the interview:
1. Be fully prepared – i.e. the US consulate sent a ‘pre-interview’ checklist to me in advance.
– so stick exactly to this
2. Bring ALL originals with you – at my interview
3. Be truthful & honest
October 6, 2016 at 22:43
continued from above ….
1. Be fully prepared – i.e. the US consulate sent a ‘pre-interview’ checklist to me in advance. So be sure you stick closely to THEIR requirements before attending your interview. For example, when asked to provide a prepaid “signature required” envelope – make sure you self-address it before you attend your interview. If you stick with their requirements – the process go more smoothly for you.
2. Bring ALL original documents (as per the requirements) to the interview. My case officer kept my original police clearance certificate and explained that this would be included in the sealed envelope which I present at POE when I travel to the US
3. Be truthful & honest in all your responses – both on paper & verbally
4. Be patient
5. Breathe, relax, it is a friendly environment – always think positive!
If you do all the above there won’t be any issue at all for you.
My interview process happened this way:
1. Security Clearance – the security guard ask me to show my appointment letter, I handed my carry case, cell phone & keys to him, in exchanged he handed me a cloak number. I carried only my documents through the security scanner.
2. Security ushered me through to the waiting room – and said approach the Non-Immigrant Visa counter and press the bell and wait for assistance. Then, my case officer processed my information. CO requested passports (current & old), original birth certificate (long-form), high school documents & certificates, bachelor degrees & professional certifications, police clearance certificates, CV, financial documents & then my prepaid envelope – to return my passport in. My fingerprints were then scanned into their system.
Case officer explained to me when I receive my visa, I am required to take my passport & the sealed envelope at US POE in March 2017. The CO indicated all my documents were in order, handed me a payment slip and said I could proceed to the Cashier window to pay my visa fee.
3. Cashier – processed my payment and said take a seat in the waiting area and a officer will call me up for an interview
4. Interview – My name was called up and I was asked to place my RIGHT hand (4 fingers) on the fingerprint scanner. Then raise my right hand and take an oath that I would swear that the information provided in my case is true & correct.
I was asked a few questions:-
– what my highest level of education was? Bachelors
– what I am going to the US? I said for work.
– what line of work – I said I.T project management
– where ? I said San Francisco
He said all the documentation was all in order. Your Visa has been approved! – I said “is that it?”. He replied – Yes! your visa will be mailed out to you within 7-10 business days.
Finally, he said place your LEFT hand (4 fingers) on the scanner to digitally sign off.
He then said Welcome to the United States! – I replied thank you!
Total Interview time: less than 5 minutes!
I left the waiting lounge, proceeded through security, handed back my cloak number and gathered my belongings. Then left the US consulate – raised my hands in joy, exhilaration & excitement!
As at time of writing this post (7th October, 2016 @ 11:42 am) – My Visa is currently in transit and will be here very soon!
Good luck & best wishes to all of you in your journey !

First of all, I came to Embassy and Lithuanian citizen checked my passport, obtained all nessacary documents (police record, university diplom, certificate of birth, two photography, medical results and I paid 330 USD). Then, I sat and wait while consul will be ready to review my documents. Me: Yes, I have.
He typing something in PC and after 2-3 minutes.
C: Okey, your visa has been approved, congratulation.

And only after that he asked me what I am planning to do in USA.
I want to say THANK YOU to BritSiom, your blog is very helpful, I did everything step-by-step that you wrote here and get visa.

Hello everyone,
I have only seen one other interview story for Stockholm, Sweden so I wanted to share my experience with my DV immigrant interview with all of you.
Nationality: Danish
DV program: DV-2016
DS 260 submission date: July 11th 2016
2nd NL date: Aug 24th 2016
Interview date at embassy: Sep 6th 2016
So I as you can see from the above dates I submitted my DS-260 pretty late in the DV-2016 program as I basically got my 1st NL on May 5th 2015, but I did not react on this before July this year. After I submitted my DS-260 I called the KCC a day or two after to ask them If there was any possibility of them being able to process my DS-260 in time to make an interview appointment before the fiscal year end (Sep 30th 2016). The person I talked said it would take 8-10 weeks to process my DS-260 so that should be doable but she obviously couldn’t promise anything. A week or two later I called the KCC again and asked for an update on my DS-260 and here I was informed that I had submitted my DS-260 way to late in the DV-2016 program as they were currently working on scheduling September interviews. The women assured me that were absolutely no possibility for them to process my DS-260 so close to the fiscal year end and she further said I would have to apply again for DV-2018 program. I was pretty bummed about this but I still had some faith left and called the KCC again about one or two weeks later but unfortunately I got the same message. But hey, I would just apply again when the DV-2018 started. But as you probably already know now this wasn’t the end of my application.
To my surprise I got an e-mail on August 24th from the Department of State regarding an update on the entrant status check website and this was apparently my 2nd NL for my DV immigrant visa interview at the US embassy in Stockholm, Sweden on September 6th. So from August 24th to September 6th is less than two weeks and I had a lot of stuff to get done before I took off to Sweden (as a side note I can mention that the reason why I had to go to Sweden even though I am born and a native Danish person is that the US embassy in Denmark on deals with non-immigrant cases, this also goes for people residing in Norway. Basically this means that for people residing in Denmark, Norway and obviously Sweden will have to go to Stockholm for their immigrant visa interview).
Even though my interview would be in another country the medical examination can still be conducted in Denmark, at a designated panel physician in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen.
I called the doctor’s office the day after I got my 2nd NL and was scheduled an appointment already on August 31st. I also had my X-rays done on the same date (500 DKK for the X-rays and 2630 DKK for the medical examination, approx. $370).
The doctor said that the results on my blood test might not be ready before my interview appointment, but I had to call them the following Monday and talk to the reception if they had received the results. I called the doctor’s office 3 or 4 times I think that Monday but unfortunately they had not received the results so I had fly to Stockholm without the medical examination papers unfortunately. Though I had contacted the embassy in advance asking what I should do in this situation but they said that I could still attend my interview but they would have to see my medical examination papers before the fiscal year end. As under no circumstance they would be able to issue a DV visa after the fiscal year end.
I arrived at the embassy in Stockholm where there was a very long line in front of the embassy (approx. 100m /330 feet’s) but I had read on the other Stockholm interview experience post that this was for the non-immigrant applications and the immigrant/us-citizen would be a separate line. I saw another line (no one in it though) for US citizens but I did not mention immigrant interviews so I asked the officer behind the class where I would have to stand in line for an immigrant visa interview. I could tell from his face that he was very surprised when I said ‘’Immigrant visa interview’’, he asked me ‘’Sir, did you say immigrant visa interview’’. Yes, sir.
So I had go to the window next to him and show another guy my passport and my 2nd NL that I’ve printed. Took about 3-5 minutes as he had to call someone inside the embassy apparently.
After this I went through the airport security check, handed in my iPhone as you are not allowed to carry any electronic devices with you into the embassy. My interview was at 9am and I think I arrived around 20 mins before that and already at that time there was at least 25-30 people sitting inside the embassy. But luckily me and another person was the only ones there for an immigrant visa interview. I waited for around 40-50 mins before I was called to the immigrant visa window.
Here is a list of the documents I handed to the officer:
– Birth and baptismal certificate in English
– Police records from the Danish police in English (signed and stamped)
– Original high school diploma in English signed and stamped
– Original finance degree diploma in English signed and stamped
– Original I-134 signed by my American cousin
– Job confirmation letter from his employer stating his position and that his employment is permeant
– My cousin’s latest W-2
– My Danish passport
After she saw all these documents she asked me to put my address on an orange envelope and after that go to the cashier window at the other end of the room and pay the DV processing fee of $330 and bring her back the receipt. I paid the cashier and went back to the window and she said she didn’t need anything else and I could sit down and wait for my interview.
I asked if she really didn’t need any other documentation from me, but she said my cousin’s income was fine and that she didn’t needed anything else. She didn’t even want any copies I’ve made of the above. She also never asked for my DS-260 confirmation page. I waited for about 20 mins or so before I was called for the interview, and here goes:
Interviewer: So, Green card lottery huh?
Me: Yeah how lucky can you be.
Interviewer: So Casper how do you want to support yourself when you go to the US?
Me: I have a signed affidavit of support signed by my American cousin
Interviewer: OK (he checked the papers)
Interviewer: As you under 26 (I’m only 24) the US government requires that you register yourself for the selective services within 30 days upon arrival in the US. The interviewer asked me to sign form DS-1810 that basically means by signing the form I acknowledge the receipt of that specific notice.
Me: I signed the form and gave it back to the interviewer.
Interview: So what do you want do in the US?
Me: Down the line I would like to build up my own company, create lots of jobs and help accelerating the economy
Interviewer: Cool! What kind of sector would you like to create a company within?
Me: The technology sector.
Interviewer: I’m going to approve you now but as we haven’t received your medical examination results you are officially ‘’denied’’ and put into AP. He handed me a denial letter.
Me: OK, I talked to the doctor’s office yesterday and they said that they would most likely send the results either today or tomorrow.
Interviewer: OK then you’re fine. As long as we receive them either this week or early next week you are all fine.
Me: OK great.
That was it. And funny enough after I came out of the embassy and turned on my iPhone, 2 or 3 minutes after the doctor’s office called me and said they had received the results and they would send them straightaway to the embassy by postal mail. Not sure if that was faith but anyway, but what a coincidence!
So I checked the CEAC website around 4-5 times every day after my interview and on Friday Sep 9th the status changed from administrative processing to Issued! I wrote an e-mail to the embassy and they confirmed they had received my medical examination results and send my visa packet.
To be honest I thought I had to show a lot more documents than I did. I had copies of everything I brought. I had two signed bank statements from my bank. My cousin’s latest bank statement, his two latest pay-stubs, his 1040 but I never showed this. So overall a pretty easy process and had a very good experience I would say.
Take care.

interview experience at US embassy Nairobi, Kenya
i would like to share my interview experience with you guys because it can help someone out there. i was scheduled to attend my interview sometime in July 2016 but my medical was put on hold because my x-ray came out abnormal and i was forced to take tb test which i was to wait for 8 good weeks to obtain results. therefore, this meant that i had to miss my interview appointment. i was forced to reschedule my appointment using an online link but there was no available slots to accommodate my interview. i used to call the embassy and they kept telling me to check for availability of slots in the online website. after my results were declared tb free around late august , i called the embassy again and thru the grace of God they gave me an appointment during this last month of sept and this is the experience.
i arrived at the gate at around 5.40 a.m and they opened the gates at around 6.00 a.m and there was some security checks where we were told to produce the appointment letters together with the passports.we were told to leave all the electronic gadgets at the gate and we were ushered in. we were given numbers and told to wait outside. i was called in at counter 9 and was requested to hand in some document, they also took my finger prints and told to pay 330 usd and bring in the receipt after doing so was told to wait outside. after around one and half hours, i was called in to counter 7and i took an oath. the following were the questions.
1. what is your name
2. what is your highest level of education
3.what did you study there and how long did it take
was is it a degree or diploma
4. when did you finish your secondary education
5. what was the name of your secondary school
6. which grade did you attain
7. which state are moving to
8. who is your host
8.how r u related ( i answered that my host was my uncle)
9. is your relationship paternal or maternal
finally, congratulations welcome to america. the co pulled out a green and white sheet and she explained what i was needed to do.
guys just be confident and be honest. during the interview session the co was typing down what i was answering. special thanks Britsimon and the rest who have contributed in this dv journey.

Adjustment of Status – New York Field Office:
My family and I have now received our green cards and I wanted to share the FINAL part of my experience with the
AOS process:
Case#: DV2016AF32XXX
Current: June 2016
Chicago Lockbox: May 02, 2016
Fingerprints: June 22, 2016
Interview: August 04, 2016
Approved: August 31, 2016 (file delayed at Kentucky Consular Office until August 25)
On Sept 09, we received in the mail only cards for other family members and one for my 18 year old daughter was missing. I started making customer service calls and booking multiple INFOPASS appointments to chase the missing GC. I learnt the following:
1. Although my daughter applied for AOS before she turned 18, USCIS officers (Tier 2 on customer service calls or at FO for INFOPASS) are not willing to discuss a case with the parents for anyone above 18. For customer service calls, the 18 year old must make the call themselves, or as in my case, I’d call USCIS and connect to my daughter on the same line via teleconference – which was acceptable
2. We did the interview at the New York, NY Field Office and my daughter has since moved to Buffalo, NY (400 miles away). We took a chance and booked an INFOPASS at the Buffalo USCIS Filed Office (different from interview location) on Sept 15. The Immigration Officer was very helpful and STAMPED A TEMPORARY FORM I-551 (Green Card) in her passport!
I have been reading of experiences where FO’s refused to conduct the INFOPASS if the applicant went to a location other than where they were assigned for the interview. From my experience it seems there are exceptions and anxious applicants should still try if they have a good reason (distance, lack of appointment slots at their designated location, etc).

Background
We are from Sierra Leone, currently living in Tanzania for over 4 years now
Played in the 2014 DV period for 2016 fiscal year as principal with my spouse and 3 children as derivatives- 5 in total
Checked results in May 2015, but was not selected
Entered again in October 2015 for the 2017 fiscal year
In 2016 May I checked for the results of the 2015 entry but in error I used the confirmation code for the 2014 entry and realized I had been selected, but thought the selection was for 2015 entry – i.e. the 2017 fiscal year
Finally realized my selection was for 2014 entry (2016 fiscal year) and hastily submitted DS-260 on 22nd May
Going through the submitted details I realized I had submitted a few wrong information on the DS-260
Requested UNLOCK on 27th June, and made necessary corrections
Received 2NL in July for interview on 1st Sept at 07:30 AM
After receiving the 2NL we set out to obtained our supporting documents:- police reports, academic certificates, work experience (certificates of employment, recommendations/ endorsements from former and current employer and colleagues), Civil and other documents, and also booked our medical appointments (at our own cost)
Interview day- Dar Es Salaam Tanzania
We were at the embassy 30mins ahead (first in the queue) for our 7:30 AM appointment
Showed our appointment letters and we were asked to stand aside and waited (somehow calmly but expectantly) as other people joined the queue.
Security checks
We were ushered in for the security checks. We left all other items except our documents related to the interview. We had arranged all our documents in a folder with plastic sleeves, but security protocol does not permit such and we were asked to remove everything and take out the bare supporting documents holding them on our hands as we went through into the waiting room
Entered the room with my family and waited. Our last child age 4 is normally hyper, sometimes unmanageable and would always be up and about drawing the attention of people; but on that day he was way composed and very manageable. He even fell asleep as we waited- this was a big relief
We were called to the first counter where a lady sweetly greeted us and requested our documents which she patiently helped us to systematically organize per individual beginning form myself (the principal applicant)
Diplomas- original and copy
Employment history (certificate of service from past employers, Letter of introduction from current employer, letters of recommendations from current and former colleagues) – original and copy
Birth certificate – original and copy
Wedding Certificate – original and copy
Police clearances from my country of chargeability and country of current residence- Original only
Financials (bank statement, Stock investments, Social security contributions statement) – original and copy
Medical reports from the recommended medical personnel- sealed as received from the doctor
For my husband they did not take his diplomas
We submitted his police clearances (for all 3 countries he had lived and worked), medical reports (sealed), birth certificate and his letter of introduction form his current employer
Children
Medical reports (sealed) and birth certificates
Submitted 2 passport sized pictures for each applicant according to the dimensions specified on white back ground, with our current valid passports
We had obtained a new passport for our last born (4yrs old) as his passport was about 7 months to expiry
Our XRAYS were not taken but we had them with us
The lady asked me to make payment to the cashier (they accept payments in local Tanzanian shillings TZS and USD, but I had converted my local TZS to USD)
There were other people being interviewed for other visa categories
We waited for over 2 hours, and were finally called to the other counter where a young soft spoken man (the CO) greeted us and requested to take an oath that the information we are providing is correct. Our finger prints were taken and the interview commenced
CO (to me): What’s your highest education level?
ME: XXXXXXxx (I verbally mentioned my professional qualifications/ courses taken)
CO: What are you doing in Tanzania?
ME: Accompanied my husband who is working here…………..
CO (talking to my husband): so what are you doing here?
My HUSBAND: I am XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX working for XXXXXXXX
CO (to me again): how long have you been working?
ME: in Tanzania or in total?
CO: Both Tanzania and your home country
ME: Tanzania over 2 years, total over 10 years
CO (to my daughter): where do you stay?
MY DAGHTER: XXXXXXXXX
CO: Which school do you attend?
MY DAUGHTER:XXXXXXXXXXXXXX
CO: What grade are you in?
MY DAUGHTER: XXXXXXX
CO: What’s your favourite subject?
MY DAUGHTER: XXXXXXXXXXXXX
CO: What do you want to be when you grow up, would you want to take your dad’s profession?
MY DAUGHTER: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
CO (talking to my other son): How old are you?
MY SON: 11 Yrs
CO: Which school do you attend?
MY SON: XXXXX
CO: where do you stay?
MY SON: XXXXXXXXX
CO typed into the system for some time and said to us “you guys are ok” he turned around and took out some blue tags (5 in total) handed them to us and asked us to come back Wednesday 7th at the time indicated on the tags to collect our visas and get additional instructions
The whole interview lasted roughly about 2 mins
I grabbed my daughter and my elder son who were standing next to my right as my husband was carrying the 4 yrs old who was asleep but was waking up at that time. A few tears ran down my eyes, we thanked the CO, left the counter and waved good luck to the others who were waiting for their interviews
Finally Wednesday 7th we collected our visas and packages and received instructions on paying the USCIS fee for the Green card, and presenting the package at the port of entry upon arrival in the US
USA, we are coming
Thanks to God, not forgetting Brit and others who had shared their experiences which helped us to be adequately (and overly prepared)
NOTE:
Please ensure you do not add new applicants/ dependants (except a new child born after the initial entry or a marriage which has to be proven with sufficient evidences)
Prepare all your supporting documents and review them for accuracy
We later learnt that other applicants who were interviewed that same day were not successful because of improper documentation; so as Brit usually advice, kindly ensure all documents are in place. Better to be “over prepared” – it was worth it

Then the refusal was incorrect.

Hello Brits,
This is very long post but hope you will have the time and patient to read. And give some answers to the question to clear my doubt.
I’m very grateful for the help you have been providing for DV Winners from all around the Globe. Your information has been very resourceful to everyone who visits this site. I usually visit various blogs of this site to get an insight on the different processes involving the DV. I read other people posts and the replies you gave help me to understand how the various DV processes work. However; people only shared their success stories about being issued DV visas but I have not read stories about someone who was disqualified regardless of the reason(s). I know it is very difficult to share a failure story but once you are bold enough to tell others of your failure story it may help them to learn from your mistakes. I believed by doing this you are generous and also helping our dear Brits as he helps us all. Having said all this I have a story to share with everyone.
I’m from Liberia West Africa and my family was part of the 2016 DV progress even though we were unsuccessful. My wife played alone and won so she added me and my daughter (not her child). We got all our supporting documents including Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificates, school documents as require by US Embassy here, affidavit of consent for the kid from the mother since we were taking her with us, medical report from designated clinic, and Police Clarence Certificate. We were to be at the embassy by 10:00AM local time but we were there by 9:30AM local time. We went through the formalities of documents submission. To cut the story short by 11 AM we were at the widow for the final interview.
Councilor : Sir can you please put your right hand up?
Me, my wife and kid : Put our hands up.
Councilor : Can you please repeat after me?
My wife and I : We repeated whatever he said.
.
Councilor : Sir who is Mary.
Me : She’s the mother of this kid. Holding my daughter in my arms.
Councilor : Do you have anything still going on between the both of you ( still referring to my kid’s mom).
Me : No, there is nothing between us now.
Note: Before the interview started I saw our passports, birth certificates and marriage certificate all stacked up before the councilor like he was about to give them back to us but he just needed more reason to do so.
Councilor : Sir I don’t want to waste your time we’ve already concluded your case.
We won’t be issuing you a visa this year you can try another time and then pushed our documents through the window. He also gave us a paper stating reason for denial. There were other things listed on this paper as reasons for denial but he ticked the one that said “you added a spouse who was not part of your original entrant and you have not provided enough documents to established a relationship”. The quote may not be word for word but it was something like the above quote. He did not ask my wife a single question and she was the principal applicant I don’t know why.
.
Now what actually surprised me was this I was not the principle applicant but he preferred asking me rather than the principle applicant for whatever reason I don’t know. Up to know now I can’t understand.
Brits can you please answer the below questions for me:
1) Is it right to ask the derivatives that were added to the program rather than the principal applicant? I mean leaving the applicant without asking he/she a single question and only asking the spouse?
2) At the embassies do the Councilors conclude your case before intervening you? I’m asking this question because the Councilor said and I quote “I don’t want to waste your time we have already concluded your case. This statement actually shocked me.
Finally, my advice to all diversity visa winners is to just be honest when filling in the DS260 online form. Whatever information you provide there, is what you will be asked. The Councilors are not there to disqualify you or looking for reason(s) to do so.They just want to know the authenticity of the information you provided on the DS260. Once all the information are genuine you have nothing to worry about.

Yaounde Cameroon
interview date:30th August
7:30am
I arrived the embassy at 6:30am ;there was little rain.i met some few people who were already there.some security men were also outside. The entrance was closed.Just for curiousity i tried to read some notices on the wall outside and realised that we are to provide two photocopies of each identification and education document contrary to what i saw online which talked of single photocopies. That was about 6:45am.i was nervous .i found myself sweating in the cold weather.i gathered courage hired a taxi in search of any documentation store. After driving for abt 10 mins we found one but she complained of low current.i just told the driver to take me back to the embassy.we reached at check in time. They started with IV people and later finished with us.
Inside the embassy interviews started with IV.I now asked a security officer if i can get out to do the photocopy. He said yes.i went out with others who had thesame problem.we succeeded and returned.
IV interviews ended at about 2pm.i was about the 20th of about 25 people. The first guy was approved.About 5 others were rejected .
One for leaving out children in innitial entry and the others for work experience.Am sure no one was approved through work experience.
I passed through the cashier and then was called to deposit documents.
The lady controlling documents gave me back my OL certificate that its not needed.i was finally called by the CO.He was a nice man.
My interview went thus:
CO:how are u?
ME: fine sir.
CO:how old are u?
ME:*****
CO:so u wanna go to USA
Me:yes
CO:I got some questions for u?
where did u get your Advanced level?
ME:*******
CO:where will u live
ME;Oklahoma
CO:good, good.with who?
ME;cousin
CO: OK congratulatios and welcome to OKLA.Hope your cousin
told you Okla is cold.Be prepared .
ME:Thanks sir am grateful.
my interview took less than two minutes
He took a yellow paper and wrote pick up date.
It was a wonderful experience.Until about 4pm when i was interviewed i didnt eat, drink anything or even used the bath.it was like i came back alive immediately the word approved was pronounced.
i will end by thanking the one and only Britsimon.you have been so instrumental to me for more than a year now.I know am gonna meet you one day to hand your chapagne.Greet SOPHIA and i will never forget to remember the tree house project.
Please all cameroon selectees should make two photocopies of each personal documents.
once more thanks SIR BRIT. OKLA HERE I COME.

I actually expected the CO to ask for her documents also and treat both of us as principal applicants which would have lead to the embassy issuing DV1 visas to both of us. Because of that, we also took along all of her of her documents but the Co did not request anything after she give me her closing comments. And when we picked up the visas it was DV1 & DV2, which had me quite surprised.

So they accepted your proof about your parents – which is correct given the lack of proof to the contrary. I think that was the correct decision.
