The “January” visa bulletin has been published. It concerns the case numbers eligible for February interviews.
For those that are current, and have forms processed early enough, they can expect their 2NL in about 1 to 2 weeks from now. I know I am going to get a lot of people who will ask me this exact question – so let me say that again. 2NLs will be sent in about one or two weeks time.
It is possible that some people will be current for February interviews, but will not be scheduled in February because they submitted late, or there is a processing backlog that causes a delay. January interviews were based mainly on cases submitted up to the end of June. I expected the January interviews to be allocated to cases submitted up to (roughly) mid July, so the backlog was continuing to be a larger impact than I had guessed last month. I suspect that we will see that speed up and once 2NLs are being released I am hopeful that we will see processing has reached to submissions of late July, possibly even August.
However, I have also been explaining to a number of peopel that we would see a slow down in the VB pace as time goes on because the cases that are now eligible for interview because their DS260 is processed, but were current in a previous month. Those cases take a large number of interview “slots” as the year progresses which means we see a slow down in the VB increase. This phenomenon is certainly evident in the VB this month with slow increases in each region. This is all “normal’ – nothing to panic about. Remember this process goes on until September 2017.
To those new to looking at VBs, let me explain what the “except” XXX country means (for Iran Nepal, Egypt and Ethiopia).
Processing is spread out over the full year. You can see the progress of the two previous years in this post about basic questions. However, some countries have a high number of selectees and those selectees are concentrated in the lower case numbers. For various reasons, mainly to do with embassy capacity, KCC slow down certain countries as compared to the region. So – in Africa, any case with a case number shown as under the new number can be interviewed but for cases from Egypt or Ethiopia, that number is lower. That isn’t a big problem, it just “slows down” those countries a little more than the rest of the region. Since selectees from those countries all have lower case numbers, this slowing down does not present any risk. It does not (at this point) mean they won’t allow all selectees an interview from those countries.
To understand why some countries get lower case numbers, read this article about the lottery draw process.
Read this link if you are unsure how to read the visa bulletin.

Am a D.V Lottery winner and would like to enquire if i can come back to Ghana after going to the USA after about a couple of months to finish my University Degree?
December 16, 2016 at 23:11
December 18, 2016 at 16:11
Lets say I go there in July and come back in September? Hope I wouldn’t have any problems
December 18, 2016 at 18:17
Again – that is fine. Relax.
You can leave for up to 6 months at a time with no problem.
December 19, 2016 at 23:22
Can I left the USA for one year?
December 19, 2016 at 23:55
Technically, yes. For absences between 6 months and 1 year you can expect some questioning at the airport upon your return. Generally, unless it is your first absence after activation, 6 months or less is safest.

I just got a job offer in the UK and I’m wondering if I must unlock my DS-260 for the second time
to change my present address (if accept the offer and move there or I can notify the consular at the interview).
1.If done so, how would you advise me regarding the place of the interview?
2.Shall I change it to London or leave it in Sofia, Bulgaria where I prefer it to be?
3. Will I need a police record from the UK if I have lived there for less than six months by the time I’m scheduled for an interview, which I expect to be around June?
December 17, 2016 at 14:59
1 & 2. YOu can update the DS260 now, but that would normally mean a change of interview location to London. So that is up to you.
December 17, 2016 at 15:57
Thank you Brit!
So If I prefer Sofia as my place for the interview and don’t want to change it to London it wouldn’t be a problem?
I prefer Sofia as the medical exams would be quite cheaper than in London and my other concerns are that if I’m asked for some additional documents it would be difficult to react promptly in London.
December 17, 2016 at 17:07
Right – so don’t update your address.
December 17, 2016 at 19:44
Thank you mate!!!
January 14, 2017 at 15:38
I’ve made my mind up and I’m going to the UK at the beginning of February.
1-I’m wondering, can I start preparing my documents for the interview now although I expect it to be in May or June?
2-Is there any expiry period for the documents if issued now?
3-Or all documents must be current in the month of the interview?
January 14, 2017 at 16:00
Most documents can be old. POlice certs should be more recent. Financial proof should be recent.
December 17, 2016 at 15:58
Any Chance To Get 2ND letter Upto 5500-5600 for Nepal’s DV winners?
December 17, 2016 at 17:06
Yes probably – but wait and see.
December 17, 2016 at 20:46
Sorry if im disturbing u with this question but i really would appreciate an answer. With this pace, is Eu29xxx a safe number for an interview ? Thanks and have a nice day.
December 17, 2016 at 22:47
The pace has nothing to do with the final number. A car can go at 100 miles an hour, then hit a brick wall. Recent previous years have exceeded that number. So – wait and see.
December 18, 2016 at 01:54
Thanks and all the best of this WORLD for u and your family !!!

Hello The Question I Want To Ask Is Do Immigrants(dv Lottery Winners) Pay D Same Ticket Compare To Non Immigrants Going To US… Plz Explain
December 18, 2016 at 14:14

December 18, 2016 at 18:19
Hello Brit, I don’t know what is happening. I submitted 16th August, was hoping to receive my 2NL late December but nothing. My case number AF****1422 CAMEROON, never unlocked my DS-260 form. When do you think I will receive my 2NL?
Is it possible for someone to steal your chance provided the person has both your Confirmation and case numbers, your DOB and names? Like hacking to replace certain things. I’m sure you can understand what I mean here.
I emailed KCC last month, they replied :
Thank you for your inquiry.
Your forms have been received and are currently processing. Allow several weeks for processing. Interviews are scheduled numerically based on case numbers that have completed processing.
Interviews for the DV 2017 program will begin in October 2016 and conclude on September 30, 2017. KCC cannot provide information as to when an interview date may become available for your case. Interviews are scheduled numerically according to assigned case numbers which have completed processing. The Department of State designates how many interviews will be scheduled each month according to visa availability. You may refer to the visa bulletin at http://www.travel.state.gov for the list of current numbers beginning August 2016. This information is updated on the 15th day of each month thereafter.
December 18, 2016 at 18:28
The reason you have not got your 2NL yet is explained in the article above. PLease take the time to read it.
Someone can only steal your chance if you are foolish enough to give them your details AND they have all the evidence with the same name as you, same date of birth and so on.
December 19, 2016 at 01:33
Brit, I was trying to access my DS-260 on Friday to confirm a piece of info I thought I entered and every time I clicked on the “completed” link to see the details in the DS-260, I got an “application error” message. Tried in different browsers. What could be the reason?
December 19, 2016 at 01:48
I don’t know. Try again.
December 19, 2016 at 04:31
Alejandra yesterday there was a maintenance it was written from few days before that on 18 from 8am to 8pm the ceac website will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance. IT should work on 19 already.

December 19, 2016 at 06:54
dear simon thanks for your unlimmited help..i am from ethiopia with case number 2017af345**..when i see january’s month bulletin..i saw that ethipia is bind to 17500..when i check the previous years visa bulletin history..ethipia’s visa cutoffs usually end on february and included in total africa’s cutoff..so if ethiopia cuttoffs get included on total africa’s cutoff, does that mean there is no any available visas for ethiopians with case numbers more than 17500?? if this is the last cutoff number for ethiopia visa bulletin??
thanks in advance
December 19, 2016 at 16:00
No. As explained above, the cutoffs for Ethiopia are about spreading the Ethiopian cases out over the year. The number for Ethiopia will continue, and if that exception is removed then Ethiopian cases would be treated as any other AF region country – using the AF number.
December 19, 2016 at 11:58
My married uncle will make me an affidive of support , in the form i134 final bar (signature of sponser) should my uncle’s wife sign in the bar too or my uncle’s signature only is ok ?

Just your uncle.
December 19, 2016 at 16:40

An interview for this case has been scheduled at the American Consulate/Embassy of Amman on February 16, 2017. Hi Wassim. What is your case number and when have you complete your DS form pleasee.
December 19, 2016 at 19:28
Cn : 2017AS00000xxx
Ds260 submit 27 may
Unlock 12 july
December 19, 2016 at 17:15
I have emailed KCC for inquiry and they sent me that my case is scheduled for February 7. I have sent DS 260 on May 24 then unlocked it twice first on June 10 and September 24. I guess the unlocking does not affect the 2NL timing. Just to pass on information.
December 19, 2016 at 18:04
As I have explained MANY times – it doesn’t, except for certain types of update or “unlucky” timing.
December 19, 2016 at 18:38
What would be an unlucky timing ?
December 19, 2016 at 19:08
Unlocking it just before they start to process it.
December 19, 2016 at 20:11
Hello. I submitted DS260 in last week of June, and I have case number EU17xxx. I assume I will be invited for interview in February (crossing fingers). If all goes well, after 1st entry into the US, the actual green card will be sent to the US adress I listed in the DS260, if I understand the process correctly. Question: It seems everyone has someone in US to whom the green card can be sent. I know nobody, so I listed the hotel, where I plan to stay. But since the green card issuing may take many weeks, I may have left the hotel by then. What do people actually do, when they don’t have any trusted postal adresses in the US ? Thanks for a great site. It is a real help.
December 19, 2016 at 20:23
People find someone they can trust. Perhaps a friend of a friend or someone similar. You must find the address and change it at the interview or at the latest at the POE. Since it takes several months to get the GC, the hotel address is not a good final plan.
December 19, 2016 at 21:59
I called KCC today and the lady who attended me said that they have just started ( last week ) to process my case. I asked her if by that she meant that my case was not queueing anymore and actually beeing processed and the woman said yes. She also add to call back around the 15/01 to check if processing was concluded.
I first submited in June 15 then re-opened the 30/08 and re-submited the 15/09.
If processing is concluded mi -January , it would have been by then exactly 7 Months ( 6 months waiting + 1 month processing) since I first submitted, and 5 months (4 months waiting + 1 month processing ) since I re-submitted.
So in my case I really think that the re-opening have somehow delay the processing.
Keep you informed.
December 19, 2016 at 23:59
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that turned out to be incorrect information.
December 20, 2016 at 00:28
December 20, 2016 at 01:01
I have no idea of the circumstances, I cannot understand the situation from your description. This must have been a DV2016 case – and the DV2016 year is over.
By the way, please post in English.
December 20, 2016 at 03:25
Good evening evining mr brit thank you for all the work you do for us, please i have a friend who was denied the visa in August 2016 because being Cameroonian living in France he filled his ds260 by mistakenly putting ” Country of birth FRANCE “But the embassy that interviewed him in France called him back in September 2016 to ask him to come back with the passport and they put the visa … Imagine the joy! In fact the problem now is that he is trying to pay the USCIS fees since last month without reaching: he is told that the numbers he introduces are erroneous so no possibility to continue until The second page of the USCIS fee payment! Please we do not understand anything, what should he do?
Do you think that it is because he was first denied visa that this problem? My friend is already in USA! please we need your help Brit! Thank u for all
December 20, 2016 at 05:46
The only option is to contact USCIS.
December 20, 2016 at 12:32
Thank you mr Brit.

WHEN will u submit what is your case number i am also srilankan from jaffna please send ur phone number [email protected]
December 20, 2016 at 18:26
Got my 2NL as well!!
CN is EUxxxx6xxx
Intw date is Feb. 1
First submitted May 24, then unlocked twice. Final submission was July 6.
My last update most definitely caused the delay.
December 20, 2016 at 18:33
As you know, most unlocking doesn’t typically cause delay, but it’s possible that your US travel history (overstay) prompted them to do a few more checks. Having said that, there could be other reasons – and just the general backlog. There are other May submission that are only just getting scheduled, and I have a feeling the backlog produced more January interviews than they could handle, hence some were pushed to February. Indeed, your Feb 1 date shows you were “top of the pile” for February – possibly because you were bumped from January. If I were a betting man I would suspect that is a more likely reason than the unlock or background checks.
December 20, 2016 at 18:58
ok, hope you’re right 🙂
Anyway, I have a question now that I have to get ready for my interview… it says on the intw preparation instructions for Paris that I need “Evidence of support – Form I-864, Affidavit of support”
Wouldn’t my latest bank statements be enough so long as I have over a certain amount of money? How about a certificate of real estate property? (I doubt it’ll ever come to that but this is something that can be sold if needs be).
December 20, 2016 at 19:52
First, the instructions are generic – DV cases are not allowed to use the I-864. Instead DV cases use the I-134. Not all embassies routinely ask for financial info (like bank statements or an I-134) but Paris often does. Generally the minimum amount of savings they would consider sufficient is about $10,000 per adult. That will typically be enough for approval, although if it were my case I would go to the interview with bank statements AND an I-134, just in case they don’t accept the bank statements.
December 20, 2016 at 18:59
and thanks a lot for your input, it’s greatly appreciated!
December 22, 2016 at 12:23

December 23, 2016 at 06:16
December 23, 2016 at 12:23
I fill my ds260 form as not employed and married and my wife is safe employed. My affidavit let me down told me that he only have $11000 on account, not enough for two person. If my wife provide her one bank statement, would that be problem in the embassy?
December 23, 2016 at 14:21
This varies by embassy. But, To show savings alone you would need to show $10,000 per adult as a minimum. Otherwise get another sponsor.
December 25, 2016 at 19:01
Hi Mr brit
I’d like to thank you for ur strong petency and tolerance in polite responces.

1. They might want letters from those that gave you the money that it was a non repayable gift.
3. I don’t think the second affidavit will be useful at all.

December 29, 2016 at 07:31
hello Brit, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!
Do all embassies request affidavit of support documents?
if no, what about the embassy in Ethiopia?
if yes, should I ask my sponsor to email the documents to me or to the CO directly?
December 29, 2016 at 07:33
Not all do. Ethiopia sometimes do ask. The sponsor sends you the documents for presentation.
January 1, 2017 at 22:38
Hi Brit. Happy new year. My case number is 2017AS6****. I am still waiting for 2NL. I filled my ds260 without uploading any documents. My question is when I should upload my civil documents? When I should pay the fee? After receiving the interview dates or before?
Thank you so much.
January 1, 2017 at 23:06
Please spend some time reading the FAQ and the articles I post. ALL these questions are already answered.
You don’t upload documents with the DS260. Ever.
You pay the fee at the interview.
January 2, 2017 at 00:47
Thank you so muc. h
January 3, 2017 at 23:46

Thanks a lot for ur reply
January 11, 2017 at 05:29
Yes, it’s normal. Read the explanation here:

Could you please advice if granting green card visa may be impacted (refused) if I have Canadian permanent request visa on the passport?
Note: I just received Canadian PR visa, and my DVLottry interview is not scheduled yet (may be in April or May).
Clarification: I started the Canadian immigration procesa log time ago, and after I did all the payments I got the DV letter.
January 12, 2017 at 14:57
January 17, 2017 at 06:15
When will the 2nl be out for March interview?
January 30, 2017 at 08:19
My Brother is a winner of DV 2017 and he got is permit Resident visa stamped on his passport. He also paid the Green Card fees online.
My question is it; if he doesn’t entry the US within 5 months from the date of Visa issued, will he get the Green Card delivered to the address that he gave, since he paid the fees online? Or he has to enter the US first to get his Green Card?
Could you please advise
January 30, 2017 at 17:19
He must enter the USA.
