We have many DV2018 selectees with very basic questions. Let me try and address the most frequent ones here in the hope that people will read this. If you ask a question and I give you a link to this page, it is to indicate that your question can be answered by reading this page and using some common sense. Please use the links in the title at the top of this page for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and the DV lottery guide. There is LOTS of information available on my site – so a look through the FAQ and guide will take care of most questions.
By the way. VERY IMPORTANT. You can ask questions on any blog post I write. If you have to ask me a series of questions – please NUMBER the questions to make my work easier.
First – two links to help those still not able to check their entry:
https://britsimonsays.com/faq/checking-esc-page-check-without-mistakes/
And for those that cannot submit their DS260
https://britsimonsays.com/faq/ds260-case-number-doesnt-match-case-number/
Is there a deadline to submit my DS260?
There is no official deadline to submit your DS260. People will continue to submit DS260s for DV2018 cases well into 2018. Submissions as late as April or perhaps even May of next year will still get processed in time.
How long does it take to process the DS260?
Based on the past years (since the DS260 was introduced), we can be pretty confident in the following info.
The actual processing time of the DS260 is quite short – probably 3 to 4 weeks. However, because of the volume of DS260s that are received starting at the beginning of May, a backlog builds up very quickly. You can think of this as a queue. In the two past years, that queue or backlog has meant that DS260s were taking 4 to 5 months to process (obviously most of that time being spent waiting). So – for those that submit their DS260 in the first week or two after the initial draw, the processing time will be quite short. Then a backlog will build and processing times will build up to 4 or 5 month delay. Then, early next year, processing times will reduce again to being a few weeks.
Does every DS260 take the same time to process?
No. There is some background checks required on each case that vary according to the situation of the selectees. The precise details of the checks are not published, but we can guess they are mainly about ensuring security of the USA. That means they communicate with agencies and foreign governments about the details you provide on the DS260. Some countries co-operate with the USA, some don’t. In countries that don’t co-operate you can expect DS260 will take longer. So, some cases are very simple, and some not so simple. If a selectee was raised in Western Europe, works in an office and has never travelled to certain high risk countries we can expect the DS260 processing (once the case is ACTUALLY processed, not queued) to be quick. If on the other hand someone has travel history around certain countries in the middle East or lists their work as “Nuclear weapons specialist”, well they can expect the US government to take longer over those checks.
So – never assume that all DS260s submitted on the same day will complete processing on the same day. There will be variations.
When will I be interviewed? Is my number safe?
OK, first of all. Processing timing is mainly based on your case number, and where that number is ranked within each region. So – if you are case number 2000 in OC region for example (where the highest case number will probably be around 24XX) you are near the back of the line and can expect a long wait before being interviewed. However, that same number in AF region (where the highest case number could be 50,000 to 60000) would be very low. So “low or high” is relative within the region.
As it is very early in the year, I don’t currently know the highest case numbers in each region. Based on numbers I have seen the highest number in each region are at least these
AF 60XXX
EU 40XXX
AS 13XXX
SA 25XX
OC 26XX
So -= there is no need to ask me if your number is low or high. Compare your number to the highest numbers here – and apply some logical thinking.
Cases are called for interview in case number order, so a low number means the case could be interviewed earlier in the process *IF* the DS260 is processed.
HOWEVER, if a selectee with a low case number submits their DS260 late, it is possible their case will not be scheduled until a later month than their case number would suggest. No case will be scheduled unless the DS260 has been processed. In the case of someone with a low number who missed their “current” month because of DS260 backlogs, their case will be scheduled once the DS260 is processed. In some cases people might actually want to use this delay to cause a later interview (for instance if someone wants to get married prior to interview).
UPDATE: After this article was first published the government published data on how many selectees there are across regions. That allowed me to do some analysis, and I published some thoughts (INCLUDING NUMBERS THAT ARE VERY SAFE!) here: DV2018 Selectee Numbers
When will interviews start and how will I be told of my interview date?
No DV2018 interviews will happen before October 2017. DV2018 interviews will continue until September 30th 2018. So stop packing your bags. It’s a long process. Interview scheduled are notified in month batches about 6 weeks before the interview month. The notification is called the 2NL.
When will KCC send the first 2NLs?
The first 2NLs (the interview notification) for DV2018 will go out in late August. That will be for cases that have been processed AND are current for October. Then 2NLs will come in a monthly schedule, also late in each month. So – late in September for November interviews and so on.
When are the visa bulletins published?
The visa bulletins are published around the 8th to the 15th of each month. If you call KCC they will always respond that it is released on the 15th. They are not “late” until the 16th. Usually I get people lamenting “the sky is falling” and “why are they so late” around the 10th or 11th. That will happen every month – and no matter how many times I explain, people are impatient.
How do KCC schedule the cases?
Roughly speaking all interviews are spread out over the year, starting in October and ending the following September. KCC release numbers via the visa bulletin to say which case numbers can be interviewed. Check out this article to understand how to read the visa bulletin.
KCC will increase the number made current on each region at a pace that ensures they have enough interviews to match the embassy capacity during each month.
So – to take an example. If OC had a highest case number of 1000, we could roughly expect to see that number increase by 100 each month. However, due to DS260 backlogs (remember no case can be scheduled UNTIL the DS260 is processed), KCC might release a higher number to start with (for October and November for instance) and slow down later. So – we might see OC start at 200 in October, be 350 in November and then increase by 50 to 75 each month for a while.
The same thing will happen in each region. This effect is going to be particularly pronounced in AF region where selectees typically take a long time to submit their forms. So – AF will start with a high VB number. Many will rejoice and say how fast things are moving and then those same people will be confused when the pace decreases later on. I have tried to explain this many times, but people just don’t seem to understand the point. It ends up being mysterious and frustrating. So – people need to be ready to be patient.
You can look at the historical visa bulletin numbers from previous years to get an idea how things work. However, every year is different, so I would suggest only taking a look at DV2016 or DV2015 to try and anticipate when your number will be scheduled for interview. Please do that rather than asking me to predict your interview date. Use some judgment and common sense to allow me to spend my time on people that need help with more critical questions.
To encourage people to look for themselves I have taken the 2015 and 2016 numbers and plotted them onto charts. So – look for your number in your region and you can guess roughly when your case will be ready for interview.

Thanks for sending that to me. It looks genuine, but it is a massive number. I don’t think they have selected AF region up to 101,000. I certainly hope not.
In the draw ALL entries get assigned a number at random (so the highest case numbers in AF region would be up to several million). Then the draw process applies a cutoff at some point when they think they have enough entries to yield the number of selectees they want to notify. I have seen in the past where a number is released that is much higher than the rest of the region – but those cases are some sort of mistake. In theory, in a year where the region went current, a selectee with such a number might qualify for an interview. But in this case I cannot imagine this case number getting an interview.

did you proof that case number is available

Hello Brit,
I hope this message find you in a good health. Then i’m Dv 2018 winner i was applied as single but i got married in December 2016 after the application after that the Woman whom i married already had three children so what can i do .
Can i add them to my Ds-260 or what !??!
Thank you in advance.
May 8, 2017 at 16:14
Yes – you can add all to your case. Use the add derivative button.
May 8, 2017 at 16:36
So i can add them without any problem regardless they aren’t my children!!! is it possible .
May 8, 2017 at 16:48
When you got married they became your step children – and therefore can be on your case.
May 8, 2017 at 19:21
Ok i get it.But if we’ll go to the interview any possibility to allow the children to get the visa or denied for any reason. And what do you think!??
Because i’m so confused .
Thank you again really appreciated.
May 8, 2017 at 20:30
How many times do I need to answer this??? YES your step children will get visas with you.
May 8, 2017 at 17:56
Hi Brit Simon, do the numbers on the “Immigrant Number Use for Visa Issuances and Adjustments of Status in the Diversity Immigrant Category ” (see link) numbers include the derivatives who were issued a diversity immigrant visa?
https://travel.state.gov/content/dam/visas/Statistics/AnnualReports/FY2016AnnualReport/FY16AnnualReport-TableVII.pdf
If so, lets look at the numbers for Tanzania, for instance, for the year 2015 it says that 60 diversity vias were issued to applicants from Tanzania (this is with or without derivatives i’m guessing). Now I know the state cannot issue more than 7% of available diversity-visas to any one country. which is 3500.
If the figure in the above example includes the derivatives, that would mean that at least 40 entrants (arbitrary number for the sake of argument) would have to have about 80 derivatives for it to add up to even 3200!
If that is not the case, and the numbers shown illustrates the total number of visas issued to everybody including wives and children, then that would leave over 3000 green cards unclaimed. And I know there isn’t a second draw every year to issue the unclaimed green cards.
Whereas if the numbers in the table only includes the selectee (with or without his/her derivatives) , then you would have to divide 3500 visas with the number of selectees who’re being issued a diversity visa that year, which would leave you with over 80 derivatives for each applicant.
Am I making sense? Thanks.
May 8, 2017 at 18:53
I understand why you are confused. You think every country should have an allocation of 3500 visas. They don’t. That would mean only 14 countries could participate. The 3500 is a maximum limit that no one country can exceed – it does not mean there have to be 3500 in any one country.
Countries with fewer entries get fewer selectees. It’s that simple.
May 9, 2017 at 11:10
But how does a country which has over 12000 dv applicants only receive 50 DV issuances in the end? Who decides which country gets to max out 3500 issuances or not? Does that mean, if out of 12000 applicants in Tanzania, only 50 were eligible and thus issued a DV, the people who weren’t initially selected for further processing, but who would have been eligible, lose out just because the majority of the selectees of that country were found to be ineligible?
The country in question does not have few applicants, therefore there should not be few selectees unless I’m missing something. I’m sure I’m missing something here, hence why I’m posting.
May 9, 2017 at 13:33
THe chances of selection in AF region is less than 1 in 100. So 12000 entries (which is tiny) would get around 100 selectees. Out of those some would not proceed through their choice, and others would be refused. There is no mystery.

Dear Brit,
In DS-260 Personal Information section there is a field “Full Name in Native Alphabet”.
Does it apply for Albanian citizens as well, even though the name of the applicant doesn’t have any special characters??? So should the applicant fill in his/her name again or should he/she click on the “does not apply” check box??
Thank you in advance!
May 8, 2017 at 23:59
No special characters = does not apply
May 9, 2017 at 23:12
What if i just wrote my name is Arabic ( my native language ) ??
May 9, 2017 at 23:56
You mean you wrote “my name is Arabic”????
Well that would need correcting then – obviously.

Hello BritSimon,
just ran across your website. This is very helpful. I have been selected for further processing as a German Citizen, but live in Oman. Case number begins with EU and number range is 30k.
1) I assume I can go to the US embassy in the country I live (even though it is not in EU) ?
2) Looking at your graph I should expect a wait time until the interview sometime in Spring 2018 ?
Thanks for your help
May 9, 2017 at 09:27
If so it would not even make sense for me to run after police reports from different countries as they expire after some months.
May 9, 2017 at 14:01
1. Yes
2. Probably.

Hi simon am a winner of dv2018 but I have no passport I have apply for my passport this week hoping it will be out in 2 weeks advice if this will disqualified me from the lottery thank you
May 9, 2017 at 13:49
I mean selected for dv 2018
May 9, 2017 at 14:13
No.
May 9, 2017 at 14:35
Dear simon,
I would like to understand why in the post you have mentioned that “the highest case number’s you have come across different regions are as below AF 51XXX
EU 40XXX
AS 13XXX
SA 25XX
OC 24XX
As such individual with CN below the above would be called for interview”
The concern is in dv 17 from may visa bulletin we have seen Asia region became current immediately after 5xxx only…it did not even come close to 13xxx as u mentioned. I am not holding you wrong just may be some logic which i cannnot interpret..
Further, an interesting point fy 16 for AS region only CN below 11xxx were called for interviews and for fy 15 it was less than 8xxx. I am referring to ur graphs so tye trend is totally unpredictable
May 9, 2017 at 17:20
There are many variations in each year too complex for me to explain to you. Years go current early when there is an under selection. This year appears to be over selected, and will likely have cutoffs. This year is like DV2015 in terms of selectees. The numbers I quoted was for selectees – not a prediction of final numbers being current.
May 9, 2017 at 15:22
Hello Brit,
For what I’ve been seeing, there are very high CN’s in all regions. Correct me if I’m wrong but almost all the reported cases that we see online are either mid or high range numbers. With the ocassional low(ish) number here and there.
This leads me to beileve that these year there are a lot of holes, or large segments of desqualified entries. My questions are:
1. Do you believe this is the case?
2. When do you think is the soonest we’ll be able to confirm that this is in fact or not true or if it is just that a lot more people got selected for some reason.
Thank you very much
May 9, 2017 at 17:27
1. Large amounts of holes don’t happen without reason. The re-used DV2017 photos have not seemed to have caused disqualification. So – it might mean a normal percentage of holes and high number of selectees.
2. They publish selectee counts with the VB in the next month or two. Then we will know.
May 9, 2017 at 17:13
Hello Simon,
I am the principle applicant of DV2018 and I successfully submitted my DS-260 form with the KCC case number and my passport number as signature.
But for my spouse, what should I enter in the “Enter your Passport Number: ” box in the “Sign and Submit” page?
Is it my passport number or my spouse’s passport number ?
May 9, 2017 at 17:33
Spouse’s form, spouse’s passport
May 9, 2017 at 19:30
Thank you sir for this great job , What about the six banned countries , Yemen, Somalia ,Sudan,Iraq …etc
I mean in Dv2018 .?
May 9, 2017 at 20:13
They are not banned
May 9, 2017 at 19:49
Hi Brit since I have played over the years and have not been selected yet please I need your help in the upcoming 2019 dv lottery that all I’m asking I really need your assistance please address my plait.
May 9, 2017 at 20:14
Just follow the instructions, use new photos, don’t lie and don’t apply though any agents or websites other than the official one. That gives you the best chance of selection – but it is still a lottery!
May 9, 2017 at 19:51
Please give me assurance that you could give me a unique procedure to my success
May 10, 2017 at 04:00
Hi, I’m a Sri Lankan who has won DV lottery 2018. Many surnames (last names) here which are in local languages obviously have no standard English spelling. Now, in my case, my last name is typed as ending with the letter ‘A’ whereas my passport shows it as ending with ‘E’. Most of my academic certificates show my name according the latter spelling, but some show surname ending with ‘A’. Please let me know what should I do now. Shall I fill the DS260 according to the spelling in the passport straight away or shall I inform KCC about this typing error prior to submitting the DS260? Thank you very much.
May 10, 2017 at 04:54
Fill the DS260 with correct spelling.
May 10, 2017 at 08:55
Thank you. It’s a great relief to have found your blog.
May 10, 2017 at 07:42
Hi there, Thank you for fantastic information. Would you be kind enough to provide some info for the dv lottery winners that are residing legally within United States. How does their case progress?. After submitting the DS260, the page says I need to schedule an appointment with USCIS myself. Would you be able to shed some light on that
May 10, 2017 at 22:03

Dear Simon,
Thanks for solving our queries .
One more query. It is:
While filling DV2018 form, I used the same photo as in 2017 for me and my spouse. But also I was selected. Now I could see in your page that it will get disqualified later.
I completed filling DS260 form.
But I am really worried that due to same photograph I will get disqualified.
Please say sth.
May 10, 2017 at 14:24
We don’t know yet how they will handle these cases. We will know more after a month or two of interviews, which start in October.
May 10, 2017 at 14:31
Thanks for your reply.
Really appreciate your current deed.
I am really worried about this.
Anyways, lets see what happens.
Thanks Simon

hai Bristimon,I am a DV 2017 winner.I attended my interview early this year and i was issued my visa as a principal applicant.
i play along with my wife, and my two kids(4 person in total). I send all our DS-260 to Kcc,files were processed and forwarded for interview. all my family members were schedule an interview by KCC to the local embassy in my country with the concept we were traveling together.
during the time of interview, due to financial constraints,i wrote the embassy that my two kids will not attend medical nor attend interview.i told the embassy when in USA my kids will later join me.
my question is,now am in the US and my two kids DS-260 were processed and forwarded at the Embassy, Can i ask the consular to schedule an interview appointment for my children since this current DV 2017 which am successful is still valid and going?
do you think they will be given appointment for this current 2017?
steps for my kids is attending medical and interview, all i need for them is appointment from the consular.
May 10, 2017 at 13:55
No, you will now go through a long and expensive and complicated process to bring them over. You made an unwise decision. YOu will need to process them by I-130.

Dear Simon,
Thanks for solving many questions I am a single mother from Kenya with one son who is turning 24 years on July 10th 2017. By the time I was filing DV2018 He was over 21 years. He won a scholarship and was admitted to a college in the USA in New York. Now I am filing the DS260 form
1. do I say I am staying with him or not? If not do I write where he is now? If yes do I say he will immigrate later please advise.
May 10, 2017 at 13:46
He will not get a DV green card as your derivative – so there is no need to include him on your forms.

Dear Sam
I am DV 2018 winner! Do my children need to have passport’s to submit DS-260? Or can I sign on behalf of them?
May 11, 2017 at 17:45
You can submit with your passport number on their DS260 form. However, you will need to have passports for them at the interview.

Hello Sir Brit
I am Dv2018 winner and already submitted the DS260
My question that in my life I have been in thee countries Yemen since birth till Novambar then Egypt for nearly two months then in Ukraine till now,However I wrote in the DS form just the period I lived in Yemen and Ukraine and I did not mention the two months in Egypt which i spent there just to take my visa to Ukraine since there is no Ukrainian embassy in Yemen, will that cause a problem anyhow
appreciate your wonderful help
May 12, 2017 at 00:03
No problem. You did not really “live” in Egypt.
May 12, 2017 at 15:30
Thanks for your reply
Another question came to my mind concerning the Police certificate, I lived in my home country in two different cities Do I need police certificate from each city or it is just one police certificate for the whole country?
May 13, 2017 at 04:59
The reciprocity page for the country will explain.
May 12, 2017 at 04:36
Does your host need to fill any forms???
May 12, 2017 at 04:51
Sometimes the embassy want to see an I-134 – other times they will just ask questions about the host.
May 12, 2017 at 09:10

I’m selected in 2018 program from Asia quota. I’m Indian born in Saudi. Currently I’m living in US legally since three years with my spouse. Q1: I need to get confirmation weather I’m eligible for AOS urgently.I just want to know which is the first step I need do to start early process for AOS without traveling out of USA. Q2: Should I submit D260 online for me and my spouse before doing any other step. Q3: Is by submission of my D260 I should expect to get the response on my eligibility or its better to visit nearest USCIS field office.
Q4: Do I need to pay along with D260 for checking my eligibility for AOS or I should wait for notification. Q5: Normally how much time it takes to get confirmation on line for my eligibility or I must call for follow up.
Q6: Should I wait for medical and police clearance till I have confirmation for my eligibility. Sorry I’m repeating same questions but want to be sure on initial steps. Thanks in advance..
May 12, 2017 at 13:37
Neither USCIS nor KCC tell you whether you are eligible. If you are on a temp visa status and have not been out of status in any way you are eligible. That’s it.
Yes you file a DS260, but the AOS process cannot start until your case number is ready. So – timing depends on that. I see you found Mom’s thread – so that will be your definitive guide.

My partner is the Principle applicant and “has been chosen for further processing”.
Two Questions for you;
1) He has completed High School and also a Tertiary education / course (TAFE) which his original application reflects.
For the interview, does he need to have both High School certificate and his TAFE certificate? or just the TAFE certificate? (will need to get a reprint of the high school certificate if that is the case)
2) Me, being the partner, Do I need to produce my High school Certificate also?
Many thanks and FREAKING great site mate!

1. Both.
2. No
By the way – you say partner, and I get that, but you are married, right?
May 12, 2017 at 13:33
Many thanks,
Based on reading all of your notes, posts and comments to other comments on this topic….
We will be before submitting the 230
May 12, 2017 at 14:04
OK cool. As long as that is recognized where you marry, that will be fine. You may be asked for evidence of the relationship (shared apartment lease, photos, trips etc). And the form is now the DS260, not the DS230 (the old form for the same purpose).
May 12, 2017 at 14:31
It’s a 3+ year same sex relationship, which has also been long distance for 2 of those years. Both Australian and now both living in Hong Kong (I relocated to close the gap).
Can prove travel between both cities twice a month for two years. Three years of text messages and emails, photos, shared Credit Cards, shared pets etc and could even do friends affidavit etc.
We would wed in Hawaii where it’s recognised.
Is there anything that has a better track record of proving a relationship greater than the above?
May 13, 2017 at 05:01
You are on the right lines. I don’t know what else you have – but what you list is good.

Dear Brit
Can I send DS-260 form for my newly born baby after eDV entry later by 1 week after I send my DS-260 since The Birth Certificate of the Baby is not ready?
May 12, 2017 at 13:26
You don’t need the birth cert to submit the form for the baby
May 12, 2017 at 13:50
But the DS-260 requested me that when I tried to ‘ Add Applicant’ since the baby is not on the eDV form
May 12, 2017 at 14:00
OK – so then wait until you have it. 1 week won’t make a difference. This is a long process.

Hello Brit
My place of birth on my passport is written as Borame instead of Borama. My Name and date of birth are correct. didn’t submit DS260 yet! 1. how could I deal with that spelling error? 2. will this cause visa disqualification? thanks
May 13, 2017 at 04:46
It’s no problem. Just make it correct on the DS260

Dear Sir,
In fact my wife won in the dv-2018. I have two questions as follows:
1. My wife middle name in the lottery application has just one middle name however in her passport the middle name includes two names. Should I update it in the ds-260? Should I contact the KCC and explain this issue and requested them to include this email to my wife case or wait till the interview.
2. The middle name of my son in the lottery application is written as the family name in his new passport that has been renewed two years ago. Note that his old passport contained the family name in the lottery application. What should I do in the ds-260? Should I contact the KCC and explain this issue and requested them to include this email to my wife case or wait till the interview.
Many thanks in advance for your kind efforts.
May 13, 2017 at 04:42
1. Update the DS260. That’s all. https://britsimonsays.com/faq/how-do-i-unlock-my-ds260/
2. Don’t worry about that – just get the names right on the DS260.
