Hello Brit,
I am a DV2017 winner. My visa interview is scheduled for July 2018. I am planning to get married in June.
1. Will I have any problem getting visa due to marriage a month before interview??
2. What shall I do to include the details of my to be wife in DS 260 or it is not possible after the visa interview is scheduled??
3. My to be wife has defect in vision and spectacles powered -2 diopter. Will this matter cause any problem for my visa or hers?
I would be thankful to have these questions replied.
May 14, 2017 at 15:47
1. No problem
2. Once married, submit DS260 as married. Not before.
3. No
May 16, 2017 at 10:14
Hi brit, i had my dv interview today, but am confused…. the consular today denied us a visa because when i entered the lottery i stated as married, but i later did my official wedding last year sep to obtain the legal certificate. she says that u can indicate marryed on lottery without the official marriage certificate… what do u advice i can do….
Us embassy Nbo
May 16, 2017 at 17:10
That is a harsh denial. I know of other case that have been approved in similar circumstances. But there is no formal appeal process so you may not be able to do anything.
Why did you state married – were you married in a way that is recognized in your country?
You can write to them pointing out that there is no rule that says a denial must happen where someone incorrectly claimed married status *IF* they were then married by the time of interview. Also point out that you gained no benefit from this error. Perhaps they will reconsider – but honestly – it is not very likely.
May 17, 2017 at 02:55
thanks brit,
i wrote to the embassy via their site and via the immigrant email….
am hoping they will revert today…
we had lived with my wife since 2013, and actually had two kids, though one is deceased…its only that we did not know stating married at the lottery would cause us any problem…

Dear Brit,
Thanks for your support!!! The interview was successful. Consul said with smile that I am qualified for DV visa and we were given a red paper. I have been said also by assistants to collect the passports in several days after receiving the proper email. The only confusing thing is my status that I have just checked. It says Administaration Processing. Do you think I should ignore that? I have not been asked to provide any additional papers or proof.
Many thanks!

It is common see AP for a few days before seeing issued.

Hi Brit
I have a problem here and I hope you can help. My husband’s name is Mukendi Katambwa Tresor and when playing the dv lottery I put his name as Mukendi Katambwa Tresor but the problem is his passport..on his passport it’s Katambwa Mukendi Tresor. So my question is;..when filling the ds260 form should I put his name as it is on the passport or apply for a new one?
Thank you
May 14, 2017 at 13:23
Hi Brit,
Should ‘yes’ or ‘no’ be answered to the following question in DS-260 Form.
โข Do you seek to enter the United States for the purpose of performing skilled or unskilled labor but have not yet been certified by the Secretary of Labor?
Does this concern ILLEGAL labor ? Please explain.
May 14, 2017 at 15:41
My DS 260 guide explains that. You can answer yes – since this question is not a problem for DV cases.

brit from your experience people with high case numbers such as 2018AF00052*** do theyusually obtain the visa or how because i learnt once the reach the optimum number 50,000 visa the stop issue them please help calm me down with an answer moreover can someone with a high case number be schedule early for an interview before someone with a lower case number
May 14, 2017 at 17:12
The visa bulletin makes numbers “current” for interview in batches. So, you cannot be interviewed before the number on the VB is higher than your number. Your number is high, so you have to wait until they get to your number. That will take at least a year from now. Read the link below to understand more.

I won DV, but I do not meet the education qualification. I do have the work experience qualification. What’s the way forward?

You can start by reading the response I already gave you to this exact same question.

Hi my sister won the edv for 2018 and she submit the DS260 form as mention single, we are ow planing to get my sister marriage the send together please advice me on this what to do.
May 15, 2017 at 01:19
If she marries someone that she has no real existing relationship (just to get the extra GV), she will be disqualified.
May 14, 2017 at 19:34
Hi Simon, just want check… my friend applied in DV2017 where he wasn’t selected. Next year he applied for Green Card Lottery in DV2018 where he was already selected. He used for DV2018 application the same pictures as the one from DV2017 which means that this picture is older than 6 month. Do you know if they check this old application? And do you know if he can be disqualified for this? Or do you know from past about any cases of disqualification for this kind of issue?
May 15, 2017 at 01:13
Using an old photo has ALWAYS been a risk to a case. This year there is a specific instruction to not use the photo from DV2017. So – there is a risk.

Hello Brit, i have some strange situation with my and my husband form, witch we are didn’t filling yet. So: firstable we felt are interview location , we clicked “Safe” to continue, then we finished filling every questions, and we desided to relocate our interview location, But(!) we didn’t sent jet our form. We moved back to first step (on the other day)-(we spent a week to fill form), and noticed that our interview location can not be changed. Insread of black script and “tick”- now is gray (lighter), and can not move/changeble… And most funny is that- I , as i winner, going to interview in London, But Husband , as I additional person going to go to interview in different country!!! (Our mother-land) Without Me?!? How is that?! I repeat, we didn’t finished and sent yet forms!!! But buttons not anymore works in 1 step… how he going to go to interview as a addictionsl person?!? Without me-winner?!? I think, we have to fix this issue before sending…Or not? Thanks a lot for your work and help! With Best Regard A.K.
May 15, 2017 at 01:12
You can’t fix that now. YOu have to submit and then contact KCC and ask them to change the embassy.
May 15, 2017 at 05:18
you can change it before submitted your form from (review ) option

Hi Dear Simon,
I am a DV2018 winner and my case# is 201829xx. I am in AOS process. when I was filling Ds260, I did not enter all my institutes from diploma to graduate degree in my country. I just did for my current university which is in the US and I am studying in PhD program but I entered the final date as the same day when I was filling the form out.
I am wondering if I need to unlock it or not?
thanks

Hi. My brother won from Ghana but he had ONE fail in one of his elective subjects. He passed all the other seven remaining subjects. Can he pass the interview?
May 15, 2017 at 00:59
Yes.
May 15, 2017 at 00:54
HI Britsimon,
Hope you’re well. My interview is in 2 weeks and naturally I’m second guessing everything! I’m having a slight freak out about my D260 form. At the time of entering I was separated from my husband and I entered under my maiden name (as per my passport). I also specified on the form that we were married, and have since unlocked and updated to divorce. I put in the ‘other names used’ section my married surname at the time of entering – was this the wrong thing to do?? Should I have left that off?
I have my marriage and divorce certificates to show at the interview.
May 15, 2017 at 01:23
That is fine – no problem.
May 15, 2017 at 01:13
Hi Brit,
Is there a way to tell if my DS260 Form has been approved before getting the Interview email? I noticed you said the first cases submitted are processed quite quickly but the first DNLs aren’t sent until late August. I submitted my DS260 within the first 48 Hours of results being released.
I know there is the CEAC but I don’t believe it is active as of yet.
Thanks!
May 15, 2017 at 01:22
It will be months before they are ready. Patience.

Hi Brit,
I am in the US on a H1-B. I was selected for the DV2018 lottery (EU00011xxx). I read your blog, but I am still confused about what I have to do next…
As I understood I have to send the DS-260 immediately to let KCC know of my intentions to proceed (regardless my preferred choice of processing, CP or AoS), correct?
Because I am in the US it would be more convenient to apply for an AoS. When am I supposed to inform KCC that I apply for an AoS rather than CP, as soon as I receive the 2NL with the consular interview date? I do this by sending the I-485 and related paperwork to USCIS, correct? To understand what happens here, when I send the I-485 my consular interview date is canceled and I have to wait for another interview date at USCIS, right?
Since I heard it takes at least 6 months for USCIS to process a case, filing a I-485 means I will receive a new interview date months after the original consular interview date (say I get the 2NL in August, the consular interview date is in October, and I submit my I-485 in August as soon as I get the 2NL, my new interview date could be not sooner than February). I wonder if this would be risky given my CN… what if all visas for Europe are used by February while I wait for USCIS to set my interview date?
Many questions… I truly appreciate your help.
Thanks!
May 15, 2017 at 13:27
DS260 is filed either way. You choose AOS or CP at that point. They only process (background check)the CP cases. KCC don’t schedule AOS cases.
If you are filing AOS, you wait until your number is announced as current, then file your I-485. You don’t wait for a 2NL. DV lottery AOS cases go faster than other AOS, so there is no risk with your number visas won’t be exhausted (they adjust the VB number to only release numbers that they can give visas to).

Hi Brit, I have a question regarding form I-134 for DV lottery winners. What should my sponsor write in box 38? “Yes, I intend.” ? If she ticks “yes”, then what does she need to write in part 7? I am not quite clear if she should simply write something like “all living expenses for the duration of three years or as needed”. Thanks.
May 15, 2017 at 13:14
Yes they should write something like what you suggested.

Hi Brit.
My husband is a DV 2018 winner
Q1.we are four me, my husband, 1 girl and 1 boy.Our problem we all submitted the ds260 except my little boy his passport not ready yet. Is this will effect our chances. ???
Q2. Do we need gurarantor from US in this year (do we have to bring it with us to the interview) ??
May 15, 2017 at 13:12
1. Submit his passport as soon as you can (you can write the passport number of one of the parents on his form and change it later).
2. britsimonsays.com/all-about-public-charge-affidavit-of-support-i-134/
May 16, 2017 at 04:08
Regarding the first Q.
If I write my passport number in his form and submit do I have to call KCC to rewrite it in the form after I get his passport or I just keep it like that until the interview and show the passport their and explain for them later..
Thank you
Best regards
May 16, 2017 at 04:25
Updating later (before the interview) is better.

Hello Brit,
I have got dvlottery for 2018. I want to know within what time duration (in month) I must submit ds-260 form online.

There is no final submit by date, but you could wait almost a year from now and still get interviewed.
May 15, 2017 at 12:28
Hello Simon,
I am a sole applicant and got my interview in 2 days but did not realise I needed a sponsor. Should I not have a sponsor, do you know what is the minimum amount of fund do I need to proof that I be able to support myself financially?
Thanks
May 15, 2017 at 13:08
It varies by embassy and case – but at least $10,000.
May 15, 2017 at 13:32
Thanks, so should I have at least ยฃ10,000.00 (interview in UK) in my bank account (statement to proof), I would not need to get a sponsor?

Hello simon. I have 3 family members in my case.I have filled their ds260 ready. I have no money for family members to be interviewed with me. I want to be interviewed and go first then they join me in USA when I have already settled. I donโt mind them following me after one year. My question is, should i submit their ds260 with mine or i wait until i move to USA?
REPLY
May 15, 2017 at 22:04
Taking them through the DV process means having them at interview. If you don’t do that the alternative process will take a lot longer (probably 2 years) and is more expensive and more complicated.
May 16, 2017 at 10:01
fine.i don’t mind for them taking longer to join me.The question is,should i submit their ds260 or i leave them since i don’t intend to go with them in this dv program?
May 16, 2017 at 17:16
No need to submit DS260s for people not going.
May 15, 2017 at 18:30
Hi simon I have been selected for dv 2018 but have made silly mistake my name John wediga g.Kennedy but I omitted the g during the entry.my question is should I proceed with the D’s 260 or not iam from Ghana
May 15, 2017 at 22:01
For most cases, updating the DS260 is usually all that is needed in cases like this. However, due to your case being held in Accra, you have higher risk anyway – and your name mistake makes that risk worse. So – the choice is yours.
May 16, 2017 at 07:59
Thank you very much simon.simon do I have any chance if I change the interview location to a neighboring country?

Dear Brit,
In the Education section in DS 260, what should be the chronological order of the educations, starting from the latest degree achieved going backwards until high school??? Example starting from Masters degree and then going back until high school?
Thnx a lot.

The form instructs you clearly.
May 16, 2017 at 07:17

Please kindly advice.

May 15, 2017 at 22:27
Please Mr Brit, i have swear an affidavit to correct error on my passport , do i have to attach the affidavit to my new passport which was issued when i am attending my interview?
May 15, 2017 at 21:21
Hi Brit,
I’m a DV2018 selectee from the SA region. I have already submitted my DS260, choosing the AOS option and paid the AOS/DV (?) fee $330.
1)I’ve decided to opt for CP instead so does that mean my AOS intent is automatically abolished after I email KCC and change my current US address to local SA address?
2) I’ve read your advice about “early filing” leading to persons being denied…is early filing referring to ONLY persons who have submitted i485 AOS packages with supporting documents to USCIS?
OR persons who have paid the $330 DV/Adjustment of status fee too early like myself?
This is the form I completed/sent with my $330 check:
Mail Payments To:
U.S. Department of State
Diversity Visa Program
P.O. Box 979079
St. Louis, Missouri 63197-9000

City: State: Zip Code: _______
Payment for _ONE (1) _person adjusting status in the U.S. (Number of Persons)
Total Amount enclosed _$330.00_ (Fee amount times the number of persons adjusting status in the U.S.
May 15, 2017 at 22:10
1. Yes
2. It’s about AOS only.
You will have lost your $330 – you will pay it again at the embassy.
May 15, 2017 at 22:45
Thanks for your reply Brit. You have and always provide useful, clear and intelligent responses.
My others questions:
1) Is there a way to change the location of the interview on the online application itself or is it only via emailing KCC? I previously selected this option and submitted so now it is not allowing me to edit this section…
2) Regarding the question, “Do you seek to enter the United States for the purpose of performing skilled or unskilled labor but have not yet been certified by the Secretary of Labor?”, I selected “No” but I am not sure if this is correct as I DO intend to work as a professional engineer.
3) Regarding the question, “Do you need a new Social Security card issued?, I recently got a Social Security number issued via my current university in the US (I’m on a F-1 Student Visa) where I am allowed to work no more than 20 hours a week. As such, I selected I would need a new card (so that the current restrictions would be removed). Is this correct?
May 15, 2017 at 22:55
1. Only by emailing KCC.
2. Yes or no doesn’t matter. Yes is more accurate.
3. Answer no on the DS260. Once you have your GC, you would go to the SSA and get a new card.
May 15, 2017 at 21:52
Hello Simon, on the Sd260 form its asking me for an address in USA where my green card will be posted, i don’t have any address in USA and i don’t know anyone in USA, can i leave that part empty? or can i fill it with zeros??? or AAAAA?
May 15, 2017 at 22:06
No – you cannot leave it without a valid address. You can use any address for now – but at the interview you should have a real address of a friend that you can trust to receive your GC for you.
May 15, 2017 at 22:46
thanks for your response. is it possible that i use an address of a hotel?
May 15, 2017 at 22:51
To submit the form, yes – but make sure to change it at the interview.
May 15, 2017 at 22:23
Hello Brit, I am actually in the US with a student visa and i won the DV lottery for 2018. I have few questions because i am a bit confused about how i have to process.
1) Do i really need to fill out a DS260 form since i am already in the US?
2) Can explain to me how i should process for my case?
May 15, 2017 at 22:28
1. It is wise, yes.

I have no idea – I don’t even know what site you are referring to.
May 16, 2017 at 05:35
Hi Brit – He is referring to the USCIS case status page. Had the same problem. My wife and I entered the US mid-April via SFO – the page (https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/mycasestatus.do) gave the same “User defined error” for both our fee receipt numbers until early May and then a few days after started giving the same user-defined error message. The most reliable way of checking the status of the green card is to log into the https://myaccount.uscis.dhs.gov/ page where you can see the latest status. The case was received for processing the first few days of May and green cards received a week after (super quick!) No social security cards as yet however we’ll give it 3 weeks from the case receipt date as maybe there was some delay.

OK – thanks. I personally think people worry too much about watching the case status. Not having an SSN is a pain, but having to wait for a Green Card makes no difference.

First of all thank you brit for all this. I was very unknown about DV and i knew after i visited your site.
And yesterday my visa was approved. But today when i visited ceac site and check my status it shows Administrator Processing. Is this normal or what?? Now i am confused.
May 16, 2017 at 02:41
It’s normal. It changes in a few days.

Hi Mr. BritSimmon,
my Case No. is AS000069xx. I am from Nepal. How likely do you think I will be called for interview, get second letter and will be given visa (In terms of Quotas for Asia and Nepal). Thank you so much for your Analysis.

I don’t have any predictions.
May 16, 2017 at 05:49
Please Mr Brit, i have swear an affidavit to correct error on my passport , do i have to attach the affidavit to my new passport which was issued when i am attending my interview?
May 16, 2017 at 17:29
That is up to you.
May 16, 2017 at 06:15
Hello Brit,
I am a DV2018 winner. I have not submitted DS 260 yet.
One of the letters in my daughter’s surname has changed in her current passport recently by authorities in order to make it as my surname. (i.e. it was “I” before and it is “Y” now).
Her previous passport was valid when I registered in DV-2018 program and I registered her surname as it was mentioned in her previous passport.
1- Should I submit DS-260 with her new surname in DS-260?
2- If Yes, Should I answer “Yes” to this question “Have you ever used other names?” in DS-260 with mentioning her previous surname?
3- Is it necessary to inform the issue to KCC?
Thank you.
May 16, 2017 at 14:28
4- Is it a problem at the interview? (I have the proof for the issue – Old passport)
May 16, 2017 at 19:42
4. No
May 16, 2017 at 17:29
1. yes
2. Yes
3. No

Hi Simon,
Amazing website you have here. I won the 2016 lottery, so am currently waiting for my number to be ‘called’. I am from Oceania and the number is 1337. I think it should be around July-ish. Would you recommend getting my medical, police report, etc ready now to speed up the process time? Thanks!
May 16, 2017 at 17:20
You can get paperwork ready, but for the medical, wait for your 2NL.

Dear Brit
I got my visa in few days ago.
all the information is correct on visa.
But in the “Immigrant Data Summary” sheet:
1) the spell of my mother name is incorrect: the right is “masoome” and entered “mahsoome” (I said this to officer but he told “not matter”,
2) My father name and surname moved(the name is ali ,surname is “karimi” but I filled in ds260 name:”karimi” and surname: ali (I didn’t know this and therefor I did’nt said it to officer.
the both mistakes are corecct in birth Documents.
What do I do?
May 16, 2017 at 17:19
1. The officer said it wasn’t a problem – so why are you asking me?
2. Again – same point.

hi brit
i already did my interview and it went well. they ask me to mail them my sponsors papers and my sponsor mail them the papers directly to the Embassy they received it on April 30 2017. my question “is it ok to mail the papers directly to them”? because some friend of mine told me to mail them by myself at the mail box at the embassy gate.
I really want to thank for your help and cooperation you are showing us.
thanks.
May 16, 2017 at 17:18
No that was not a good idea. You should have presented the I-134. Contact the embassy and see if they have connected the papers with your case.

It’s difficult for me to say a list of documents is complete because I don’t know someone’s individual circumstances, but you seem to have prepared well and understand the process.
The photo might come up – just be prepared to answer with the weight loss explanation.
The interviews are usually an anti climax – easier than people expect – so relax and be confident.

Hi, I am a DV winner and I am little bit in confusion to fill DS-260. Do I need to mention about all my educations such as from High school to University degree. ” Does this job require at least 2 years of training or experience?” This question also make me confusion whether I should select YES or NO hence my job do not require 2 years experience and I am working since last 20 years with same organisation.
May 16, 2017 at 17:02
So you answer is no.
May 16, 2017 at 17:16
Thanks Brit. Do i need to mention my educations both higher secondary and university degree? Or one highest is sufficient.
