Hi Brit, I really appreciate your great service.
Me and my family are selectees for DV2018.
I have three question.
1. My given name in original DVe application lacks one letter. But I filled D260 according to my passport. Will it be a problem. This is a technical error we find when we write our native names in English.
2. In the DVe entry our address also missing one number. eg: instead of *** *2, *** * have been put. But I put the correct address in D260. Will this be a problem?
3. My case # is AS00012***. With you experience when can you guess our interview be held?
June 5, 2017 at 13:31
1. Probably no problem.
2, Probably no problem.
3. At least a year from now.
June 5, 2017 at 16:21
Thanks for the prompt reply Brit! Don’t I need to unlock and correct these errors. By the way we are planing to move to a new house within a few months. Will wr gave to enter it?
June 5, 2017 at 16:29
There is a mistake in last line of my previous question. It should be “will we have to enter it?”
June 5, 2017 at 18:24
Like I said. You have a long time to wait – so once you have moved you can unlock the form, change that and anything else you want to change.
June 6, 2017 at 00:45
Thanks Brit, I really appreciate your great service. I learnt a lot from you.Regards
June 6, 2017 at 16:22
Dear Brit, sorry to trouble u again. I couldn’t mention one thing in D260. I have been working in a foreign country for 3 years (1993-96) but did know that it should be mentioned as it was earlier than 10 years. I was planing to forward PCC from that country. What shall I do?
June 6, 2017 at 17:53
Did the DS260 ask for travel history ONLY FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS????
If not – you should correct the DS260 to answer the questions being asked – not what you think they are asking.
June 6, 2017 at 22:29
As I remember there was no question about travel history. I mixed up previous employments and places I lived. They ask only past 10 years employment history. Anyway, thanksa lit again Brit and really appreciate yor great support. God bless you & your family..

From Nepal
CN 68**
Today I read a tweet of president Donald trump talking about travel ban again so I’m curious and scared that it would affect us or it is just a tweet?
Because Nepal is the only one country which is being getting visa bulletin of dv? Now just 2vb are left..Please give me your opinion
Thanks Birt.
June 7, 2017 at 00:02
My opinion? Trump is an idiot and no part of the travel ban relates to Nepal, so your question is pointless.
June 5, 2017 at 10:32

Hi Britt! 15 days ago we sent the package to AOS we have not yet received confirmation from Chicago and personal checks have not yet been charged to the bank, is this normal? A few days ago you replied that the confirmation took 2-3 weeks. The payment of the AOS also takes that time to be charged?

Relax!!!!
June 5, 2017 at 13:57
Hi Simon – I am British , My Husband is South African ,with dual citizenship with Great Britain. I believe he can enter the lottery for the coming year, is this correct? If we end up being lucky enough to get through will i be able to go with him? Any other help would be useful.
Thanks so much
June 5, 2017 at 13:59
You can both enter. You enter charging to SA. If either of you win, you both get GCs
June 5, 2017 at 14:32
When is the last date for submissions of D.V lottery 2016 documentations,?
June 5, 2017 at 18:39
DV2016 finished – so make clear whether you have a DV2017 or DV2018 case.
June 5, 2017 at 16:17
Hello Brit. I am talking with a girl in Cameroon she says she is Canadian and will not need a passport to fly to US. She say she needs 400 dollars for a medical certificate. Sounds like a scam ? Or is she telling the truth about either or both. Thank you
June 5, 2017 at 18:25
Obviously a scam.
June 5, 2017 at 18:29
By the way – the “girl” is probably a guy, and has copied the photo from the internet. You can use google image search to find where they got the photos from – but yeah – this is a classic scam, from an area known to be “ground zero” for scammers.
If you want confirmation – send me a couple of the girls’ photos to me and I will do the image search. britsimon3 at gmail.

Hello Brit,
I am DV2017 selectee from Nepal and my interview notification will be made through upcoming visa bulletin of July. Since today is June 5 and visa bulletin will be Available by June 10. Will I be able to make changes in my DS260 till then as the person who will receive me has shifted to a new apartment and I need to change the address. Will the unlocking my DS260 cause delay in my interview schedule?
June 5, 2017 at 18:14
Hurry up and make any changes needed now.
June 5, 2017 at 17:13
Hi Brit,I do appreciate your services, I was among the selectees for DV 2018, I filled out the forms and I was having a problem signing in and submitting…thankfully, I read a thread from a member here who also had the same problem, I omitted the zeros and it worked, but my problem now is, I can’t check my status to know whether its still at NVC or READY, anytime I enter my case number without the zeros,2018AFXXX82 it says INVALID IMMIGRANT CASE NUMBER
June 5, 2017 at 18:15
2018 cases are not loaded into CEAC until Jan 1 2018.
June 5, 2017 at 18:35

Please try again later. ORA-28001: the password has expired ” please how do we get a copy for tomorrows interview
June 5, 2017 at 18:41
You can’t do anything about that. Take a screenshot of the error message.
June 5, 2017 at 19:43

June 5, 2017 at 19:57
hi Brit
i have been abroad for couple of times for the last four years. most of the time i was away about three months each time for academic training’s . is it compulsory to mention this on my travel history as well as when i am filling my education and academic training presenting my certificates that i received each time?
June 5, 2017 at 20:10
It is best to be totally honest about these things.
June 5, 2017 at 21:01
hi again
i read somewhere that if you resided a country more than 6 months you need paper that states you have not criminal records in that country…….. how that would be possible if i am not currently living there and cannot receive it related authorities

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!

June 5, 2017 at 20:26

June 5, 2017 at 20:24
hi BritSimon,
Thanks for the replies.
1- I was born and lived in Kuwait and left it in 1990 during the war, and havent been there since, do I need a police record from there? it will be difficult to obtain,
2- My father added a last name after I graduated from university, and i amended my university degree with this new name, and I do not have any documents with the name before the addition, do I need to list that name I used before?
Thanks
June 5, 2017 at 21:01
1. If you had read the reciprocity page for Kuwait, you would have seen that you are not expected to provide a police cert since you are not resident there. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!
2. That would be wise.
June 6, 2017 at 06:38
hi
thank you so much for the help,
I am born in kuwait pre war era, and i was awarded the 2018 DV based on my birthplace of Kuwait, but am of a Jordanian nationality, it is required for jordanians to have an official BC issued by Jordan but it is mentioned i am born in Kuwait, do I need to apply for a copy of my original BC from kuwait (back in 60s) or is the one issued by Jordan sufficient? thanks in advance
June 6, 2017 at 23:56
I don’t know those specifics.
June 5, 2017 at 20:33
dear Simon
Today I try to fill DS-260 to submit it was my first login, I saw message says ”
If a person in your family is not listed below, click the “Add Applicant” button to add him or her. Derivative applicants for the DV program include spouses or children under the age of 21 who meet the requirements of U.S. immigration law. Filling out an application does not guarantee that an individual will qualify as a derivative in your case. This can only be decided by a consular officer at your visa interview.”
1. Now my case during my first entry I was Legally Separated but now we are together, so can I add my wife as applicant?
2. Inside DS-260 there is an option enter spouse information, also I saw here add applicant, when I add I saw my wife own application that has it is own start button, what does it mean?
3. When I login my case I saw some applications those are ready to start such as my child, me each application has own start button so, is it compulsory to complete all applications ?
June 5, 2017 at 20:59
1. Yes. But I have to warn you that your case is risky, based on our previous conversations.
2. I don’t know what you mean.
3. No.
June 6, 2017 at 16:04
Hi Simon, What is wrong in my case, you told me prepare Reconciliation letter and Legally Separated letter I have all those documents, and we are living together now, so what else you recommended me? What is you advise I will follow your instructions.
June 6, 2017 at 18:00
On your DV entry you chose legally separated. That is a specific process where a court will have had to provide papers of legal separation PRIOR to your eDV entry. If that did not happen, then you actually just left your eligible spouse off your application. Everyone who does that is disqualified. So – to avoid disqualification, you must have had the papers for legal separation already, at the time of the entry.
Then you listed a child on your eDV entry. The child is now deceased – and again, you need paperwork to prove that (a death certificate).
If you live in a country where documentation is often faked, the documentation you provide could be questioned. So – the risk is there. It is up to you to decide whether you are being 100% honest and that your documentation is genuine and verifiable.
June 7, 2017 at 13:56
So, the best way that I can be save is to left my spouse, as I understood your reply. Because of as I told you during time of entry I was separated my wife, but it was based on Islamic Law now I have already Islamic law separation paper dated on before entry but, I explained court my issue and they processed papers based on Family law. Now you told me be honest, so to become a honest
1. how about if I take Islamic Law Papers those are dated before eDV entry, and I explain them what happen?
2. How about if I take both and I explain each papers?
Just tell me last recommendation because I want send DS-260 early? I confuse this process, when I was selected Legally Separated really I didn’t have any concept about it, but just I didn’t want to select divorcee because of that time I have a hope to make union again, that is why I selected during eDV entry Legally Seperated.
June 7, 2017 at 14:09
If you cannot PROVE you were ***legally*** separated when you chose that option in the eDV, you WILL be disqualified. So – it is up to you whether to test that the Islamic law papers will be accepted as legal proof. Legal papers obtained after the eDV will not help.
June 6, 2017 at 01:08

June 6, 2017 at 07:02
Hi Brit..forever grateful for ua guidance through this process. Am a DV2018 selectee. About the police certificate (clearance) does it apply to all above 16 years of age and is it for where one currently resides or it applies to any place one ever lived after attaining 16 years of age? I have been to other countries (but not US) before n have stayed there for over a year. Am I expected to get police certificates frm there even when I no longer stay there?
Another querry, my spouse n I only did a customary wedding around 4years ago n have a child together. We are currently planning on officiating our union in the governments office this year for the sake of our interview later (to get the official certificate) though I have already submitted my DS 260 form n filled our marriage date as the one we did our customary union. Is this in order? Will it be a probkem that we officiated it after being selected for further processing? Will they require proof of our customary wedding?
June 6, 2017 at 23:55
1. This is fully explained in the instructions – so read that.
2. They wil require proof of both wedding events.
June 7, 2017 at 08:25
Thanks Brit..will get the certs. Advice further please-for the customary wedding, since there is no written proof(document) are photos sufficient proof or what kind of proof can one use for an african customary union if u may know??
June 7, 2017 at 13:46
Photos would be OK, assuming you have the other legal marriage documents.
June 6, 2017 at 09:09

4. I do have a high school and B.Sc Degree can i register both or only the degree and I do have a 3 years work experience, which is better to qualify education or work experience on my performance.
5. My interview is in kenya, where can I examine a medical check up in kenya or Eritrea?
6. Tell me the role of a petitioner or sponsor regarding this process.

June 6, 2017 at 23:53
1. If your language uses a different alphabet, you use this field.
2. Yes
3. You list it as a past occupation.
4. Education is always easier. List all education from around age 12.
5. The Kenyan embassy has certain doctors they want you to use – use one of those. (Read the instructions)
6. https://britsimonsays.com/all-about-public-charge-affidavit-of-support-i-134/
7. Answer no. Mention you will have the vaccinations at the medical.
June 6, 2017 at 09:59
Hello simon ! Thank you about your guide , i have learn so much from this site . I made “DOESNT APPLY” on PROVINCE/STATE .
I filled only city on CITY OF BIRTH. Is that ok ?
June 6, 2017 at 23:48
Yes
June 6, 2017 at 11:56
Hello Brit!
My fiance was selected for further processing and we got married after the results.
Now we are trying to fill the DS-260 form. Our questions are:
1- My fiance changed her surname from her maiden (X) to her married surname (Y), now that she has a new surname but in the MAIN PAGE of the DS-260 is still her old surname (the maiden, witch is the surname she had when she applied with the E-DV). Should the surname on the MAIN PAGE show as the old (maiden) or the new(marriage) surname? And if it has to be changed to the new one, how is it done? (and we get that later on the form filling she has to fill the “other names used” with her maiden surname)
Thank you very much!
June 6, 2017 at 12:00
Long story short: DO WE HAVE TO CHANGE THE SURNAME IN THE MAIN PAGE OR LEAVE IT AS IT IS(THE OLD)? AN IF YES, HOW?
June 6, 2017 at 23:34
She enters the married name as the legal name and maiden name in other names used.
June 6, 2017 at 12:08
Helloo brit. Please i tried the dv 2018 and i didnt win. But i want to find out if the programme still exist so that i keep my self up date for the time of entry. Thank you
June 6, 2017 at 23:33
Entries will be accepted for next year in October.
June 6, 2017 at 14:30
Hi Simon,
I just want to share something regarding the social security card. When I filled the DS 260 I answered “Yes” on the question “Do you want the Social Security Administration to issue a Social Security number and a card?” Three days after I arrived I went to the administration office to check if I have to fill in some forms or anything and they told me it’s too early and to wait for at least three weeks and then come back if the number hasn’t arrived. I am the principal applicant, and it has now been 17 days since I got here and I still haven’t received it. Strangely enough, my husband’s SSN has arrived a week ago, so I today I went to the administration office to check if there is a problem with mine. So, they told me that I haven’t been issued an SSN and asked me if I wanted to apply for one. I explained to them all of the above but they didn’t care and now I have to wait for two more weeks. I am getting restless because I need to start working as soon as possible.
Friendly advice, always check twice and be persistent and precise when you talk to a person at the administration office, not everybody cares and does their job properly.
June 6, 2017 at 23:32
Yep. Checking in the first 3 days meant it was inevitable they would not find you in their system yet – but I agree, the SSA in particular are famous for providing inaccurate information to get you to go away.
June 6, 2017 at 16:10
On question Do you have any specialized skills or training firearms ,explosive,,etc,,,i put YES,,explain: because I have regular military cours,,in regular army,,If am wrong…I have no specialized skills..so,if i need to anlock ds260 and change this,,what do you think? I am from Serbia and I have been in army 1989,,regular military for one years
June 6, 2017 at 17:55
You need to be honest. So your answer was correct.
June 6, 2017 at 16:37
Hi Brit thanks for your endless service, now as a police officer, where can I possibly expect my background investigation to be conducted?
June 6, 2017 at 17:50
What do you mean?
June 6, 2017 at 17:16
Hi Simon,
To day is my interview date however, unconditionally my visa has been refused due to spelling error what shall I do to will go embassy with an other appointment?
thanks.
June 6, 2017 at 17:50
What do you mean. Is this a DV case? You had the interview and were refused? What refusal code did they give? What was the spelling error. Be clear.
June 6, 2017 at 18:27
that means I didn’t got congratulation and yellow card from the visa officer?
June 6, 2017 at 18:50
the case behind my error was my last name on passport and date birth certificate was mismatched and the officer said that re correct both of them and come with other appointment.if so what shall I do?however, he didn’t give me date of appointment
thanks
June 7, 2017 at 00:20
Follow his instructions.
June 7, 2017 at 16:23
If I follow his instruction, do you think my visa will be approved sir? I’m just very boring and sad
June 8, 2017 at 03:58
Well your case won’t be approved if you don’t do as they have told you!
June 6, 2017 at 17:31
Hi BritSimon, I have two questions, do you know where there is any official information saying that DV cases can enter the US to activate the visa, leave again and come back within one year? I can’t find anything official! My second question, I have passed the interview, got my passport with the visa, paid the $220 online fee to process the actual green card and booked my flight in July to activate the visa, is there anything I have neglected to do? I have read your blog inside and out and done everything the basic instructions from the embassy have said to do but I think you actually know better that the embassy seems to as they seem to lump everyone moving to the US together 🙂
June 6, 2017 at 17:47
1. That is standard law – not specific to DV cases. If you read the guidelines for LPRs they say absences must be less than 1 year, and longer absences need a re-entry permit. In practice, shorter absences can cause problems *IF* the LPR does one of several things that could suggest abandonment of their LPR status.
2. Nothing else to do. Just enter to activate the status.
June 6, 2017 at 18:25
Many thanks for your quick answer, I just wasn’t sure about the fact that after the activation trip I won’t actually have the green card yet, I’ve had some friends on various different visas (not dv) have to stay in the US whilst they are waiting for the actual green card to arrive and then they can come and go but not before it has arrived, thanks again for the help!
June 7, 2017 at 09:33
In the instructions of U.S. Embassy in Finland is written the following:
“Getting a Green Card – Your Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, also known as a green card, will be automatically mailed to the address in the United States that you write in your visa application form. This is a very important document that proves you have permission to reside in the United States. Do not travel outside of the United States until you receive your Permanent Resident Card. Once your card is issued, you should not stay outside of the United States for more than one year. If you do, you will lose your status as a Lawful Permanent Resident.”
There’s no mention about being able to travel outside U.S. with only the stamped one-time visa; are you 100% sure it is possible to enter to just activate the LPR status and then travel back to the country of origin to tie up loose ends and be able to return to U.S. within one year from activating the LPR status?
June 7, 2017 at 13:42
Yes.
June 6, 2017 at 18:25
I noticed you’ve commented on this before, but when it comes to UK addresses can I check the box that says ‘state/ province’ does not apply? Instead of filling out the state as ‘Greater London’ or ‘England’? It just doesn’t seem technically right when neither these are states nor provinces?
June 7, 2017 at 00:22
Write the county. (for example “Luton, Bedfordshire”)
June 6, 2017 at 19:23
Another question I have is that 15 years ago I went on a student-work J1 visa and was issued a SSN. Do I reference this SSN?
June 7, 2017 at 00:19
Yes
June 6, 2017 at 21:15

3. Oh man – just answer the questions using some common sense. They are not trying to trick you!
4. Answer general studies.
5. You can answer that.
Please – use your own judgement on these questions.

The 1040 is more useful – but take both in support of the I-134.
June 7, 2017 at 02:06
I’ve passed my interview and the CO told that 1040 doesn’t enough cuz my sponsor is self-employer
And told to send IRS TRANSCRIPTS
but when i made a search i found that there is more than 4 types of transcripts and the CO didn’t tell which one i have to sent and he just said “IRS TRANSCRIPTS” .
So, I’ve sent this form to the embassy but im really worried about that. What do you think about this form ” IRS TAX ACOUNT TRANSCRIPT”?
THANK YOU.

I don’t know whether that will suffice.

hello Simon i managed to sign n submit my part of the DS 260 form with no issues however when i tried to submit the section for my 14 year old son it requires that i fill out a specific form for my son agreeing to join the military between 18 and 26 years and the sign and confirm icon is not activated i dont understand, please explain no one has mentioned this in the forum
June 7, 2017 at 00:12
For a male under 26, before you click the submit button, you have to click the link about selective service. You read that, and then the form will submit.

Hello BritSimon,
I fillet DS260 around May 7. What are the procedures after filling out this form? How do I get notified about the interview date and the documentations I should submit.
Thank you,
Elfrida

I went for my visa interview single , after my visa was issued I got married to my finance and travelled to the USA .I currently in the USA.
Can I update my status to marriage when applying for job and tax purpose in future since my wife will join.me as soon as settled that is say in a year or two?
June 7, 2017 at 03:17
You would need to sponsor your wife through the I-130 process. That will take around 2 years.

Dear Mr Simon
I am a DV2017 winner and changed from AOS to CP early this May i.e last month. KCC sent me an email a day after, confirming the change and that my interview location has been changed to Harare, Zimbabwe.I have a few questions to ask
1) My case number is AF000035***, Will I be able to get an interview before September 31st?
2) My embassy(Harare) doesn’t have info online about whether they require proof for financials. I do not have a friend or family who can act as a sponsor and sign the I-134 form for me.I however am a student at NYU and am on full ride scholarship which covers housing, travel to and fro home every semester end and a generous stipend. I am also currrently doing an internship here in NYC over the summer with a New York City govt agency. Will my scholarship status be enough to prove financials? I still have one and half more years in college(fully funded) and thus believe I will be able to support myself without being a public charge.
My apologies for the long question format.
Thank you
June 7, 2017 at 03:24
1. Probably.
2. I don’t know for sure about Harare. Personally I would advise having more proof than the scholarship.

June 7, 2017 at 06:01
Hi again Simon,
Do you know how entrepreneurship is seen as work experience? Would being a CEO of your own company that you’ve been running for a living and employing ~5 people for the last 6 years be seen as sufficient work experience to be eligible for the DV visa?
June 7, 2017 at 06:29
Possibly. It is up to you to convince the CO.
June 7, 2017 at 06:15
Hello brit;
my friend has just forget the actual year of birth he used in first DV entry, regardless of having the confirmation number and his last name he cannot check his status, whether he wins or not.
1. Whats solution for that sir.
June 7, 2017 at 06:30
Try all the years.
June 7, 2017 at 06:18
Hello Brit,
First of all, thanks so much, your FAQ has really been so helpful. However, I have one concern, the surname of my parents is different from my surname, but actually it falls under same ethnicity and used interchangeably on majority of times in my country. will there be any problem because of this at the interview? Will I have to show any kind of evidence or something like relationship verification?
June 7, 2017 at 06:33
No problem – just show birth certs and so on.
