Hi Simon,
Do you think at the interview (if it comes up) will the fact that my partner is an American citizen be a help, a hinderance, or wont mean anything? I was wondering if they might think its weird that we arent married and going for a visa that way? We arent really marriage people so thats why we havent done it!
Thanks!
Emily ๐
May 17, 2018 at 16:17
Won’t make any difference.
May 18, 2018 at 09:36
Oh excellent thank you! ๐
May 19, 2018 at 10:06
Married my American husband AFTER registering for the DV lottery and it wasn’t a problem at all as long as you’re honest when they might ask. So no need to worry.
May 17, 2018 at 12:15
Dear brit. right now and it is risky to ask the KCC to transfer the interview to another country? My cn and EU28000 I would like to send an interview in Italy because in Albania they require affidavit of support. while in Italy no.
May 17, 2018 at 16:21
Italy could ask for an I-134 too. It depends on the case.
The interview is based on current address. You can’t choose where you interview (especially for the reason you gave), all you can do is change the address if you have moved.
May 17, 2018 at 16:47
the interview in the 1nl I was assigned in Italy, because I lived in Italy, my mistake was transferring to Albania
May 19, 2018 at 05:31
hello Simon, please I have a problem. I have been selected for Dv 2019 lottery and I am about to fill my ds 260 but my passport will expire in November 2018,should I use the number on this passport or should I live the space blank while waiting for a new passport?
May 17, 2018 at 12:31
Did have people ago that win DV lottery after the first day of publication? Do I have chance to win in future days?
May 17, 2018 at 16:24
A very small chance. There might be a second selection – you can check again in October.
May 18, 2018 at 10:13
Hi Brit, my case number is AF30xxx for DV 2018
If I submit my DS-260 now, do I still have a chance for interview?
May 18, 2018 at 14:27
Yes
May 17, 2018 at 12:57
Hi Simon,
I received a visa on the green card. I am 54 years old. We are from Russia .I am an electrical engineer by profession. I have questions.
1. Can I find a job at my age?
I was looking for work in American forums. Everywhere workers are required to 45 years.
2. How many months after arriving in the US it will be possible to receive a green card and SSN? Without a green card and SSN can I work?
3. How much do I need to have money with me for the first time while I do not work. We are two adults. We will live in New York.
4. How much does it cost to rent a one-room apartment and a car? Without SSN, can I rent an apartment or a car?
May 17, 2018 at 16:26
1. Yes, but it might be harder.
2. You don’t need the GC to work. You get the SSN within 2 to 3 weeks.
3. That will be very expensive. You will need lots of money – do your own calculations.
4. Again – check for yourself.
May 18, 2018 at 21:09
Hello Brit, I was selected for dv lottery 2019 and I am about to fill my ds 260,but I have a problem. My passport will expire in November 2018 ,should I use the number on this current passport or should I live the space blank while waiting for a new passport?
May 18, 2018 at 22:48
Use the passport number you have and correct it later.
May 19, 2018 at 05:34
Thanks sir.
May 17, 2018 at 16:47
Hello Max,
1. You need U.S. license for that.
4. Around 800-900 $/monthly. But you should be pay security deposit (+ 800-900$) and 1-2 amounts additionally (may be). Because you don’t have a credit score.
May 17, 2018 at 17:12
1. Huh? That’s not correct.
4. Those numbers are incredibly low.
May 17, 2018 at 20:35
1. My friend is an Electrical Engineer in NYC and he also won GC 2 years ago. Before he got license he was working as electrical technician.
2. Those numbers is OK for East Cost, New York (not for Manhattan)
May 17, 2018 at 20:37
4. Those Prices for ONE ROOM, 1 BR or Studio is 1300$/ mo and up
May 17, 2018 at 20:45
“and up” – quite.
May 17, 2018 at 20:49
1. Right – but the question was “can I get a job”. Only some jobs will need license – so the answer is not always that a license will be needed.
2. OK – let’s differentiate New York State from NYC. Generally when foreigners say “New York” – they mean the city or surrounding. Not Buffalo!
May 18, 2018 at 16:30
You do not need a licence to find a job using your degree as basis. However calling yourself “engineer” and signing public-safety related design documents as a professional engineer requires a license. Very small percentage of “engineer”s work in a position that requires a license. So until you decide to open your engineering office or working with in a position which requires full title of an engineer, you do not need a license.
May 17, 2018 at 13:32
Hello,my case is 47000 ,i am waiting for a new passport to be issued these days ,can i still have time to unlock ds260 to enter the new passport information ?Thank you,
May 17, 2018 at 16:27
Yes, but if you get scheduled before unlocking, take old and new passports to the interview.
May 17, 2018 at 13:34
Hi Mr Simon
Firstable sorry for bothering you
Please be kind enough tell me that if there is a letter mistake in surname while applying ( it is supposed to Gahramanova) it is Qahramanova !! You have seen this kind of problem before ? I need your help
May 17, 2018 at 13:41
My wife has won a green card 2days ago
May 17, 2018 at 16:29
No. She got selected for further processing. That might later mean a Green Card IF she meets all the requirements.
May 17, 2018 at 16:28
I have seen this problem many times. People seem to struggle with their own names.
Assuming there are no fraud concerns this is normally not a problem as long as the name is corrected in the DS260.
May 17, 2018 at 16:37
Mr Simon as much as I know that you can not change any name in theDS260 becouse the system will not accept it
Plz text back plzzz
May 17, 2018 at 17:09
You can enter the legal name correctly.
May 17, 2018 at 17:21
Mr Simon thank you very much for a great efforts higly appricated it
Last question

hello Mr BritSimon, please how can I follow up the number. I won the dv lottery this year
May 18, 2018 at 17:48
I don’t understand your question.
May 17, 2018 at 13:42
Hello Simon,
1. Is there any cases where the D.V winner, who doesn’t list their married spouses in their original application, get the visa?
2. What is the chances of being qualified or is it 100% disqualification
3. In case if such approval cases has been seen, what is the best steps to proceed?
May 17, 2018 at 16:30
1. No (not without immigration fraud.
2. 100% disqualification
3. Don’t proceed.

DS260 – QUESTION REGARDING: Previous Work/Education/Training Information

May 17, 2018 at 16:53
Just put the address and phone number you had.
May 17, 2018 at 17:05

Use your own judgement about what to do.
May 17, 2018 at 16:46
Hello Simon, we have already paid the fees for the Greencard, and we travel to the USA at the end of the month. My husband is the principal, we have created an account on the page of Uscis Elis, and from there we could change the address for the shipment of the Green Card, we will also try to verify it with the officer once we arrive at the airport. My question is, should we create an account for each one? or only with the one of the main one for the change of address?
Thanks in advance.
May 17, 2018 at 17:10
Each one. But it is essential to check at the POE.
May 17, 2018 at 16:50
Hi Britsimon, A friend of mine won DV2019. She had previously applied for non immmigrant visa stating she was married with one kid.The marriage was come we stay which has no formal way of divorce. When she applied on her initial DV, she stated unmarried since the marriage ended years back in a informal separation and she could not selected divorce if there was no divorce certificate. What are the chances of her being granted the Dv visa?
May 17, 2018 at 17:16
I don’t know. There is obviously a risk.
May 17, 2018 at 17:29
Hello Simon,
What happens to the current F1 and F2 status if the people applying for the greencard from EDV lottery are denied for greencard?
May 17, 2018 at 17:32
There can be risks – it depends on their circumstances.
May 17, 2018 at 18:37
1.Do we become out of status and have to leave the country?
2. Can we come get the same non-immigrant status automatically?
May 17, 2018 at 18:33
hello Simon thanks for helping, please, what was really the error that i was doing in the process because even now i am unable to have the result by my self.
May 17, 2018 at 18:36
do i still have any chances of wining ( can i still verify sometime in the days ahead )
May 17, 2018 at 19:02
Hello, my brother was selected in DV-2019. He resides in Germany now and had an unpleasant episode a few month ago. During a routine traffic stop, it was discovered, that he was behind the wheel with a driver license that is not valid. The license was valid just not in Germany at that point in time. After living in Germany for more than 6 months, one needs to apply for a German license.
I’m trying to figure out whether or nor this needs to be listed in DS-260 form under Security and Background: Criminal: “Have you ever been arrested or convicted for any offense or crime?”
He wasn’t arrested. He received a notice to pay the fine, which he already paid.
May 17, 2018 at 19:13
It’s a traffic ticket. No big deal. As for whether it should be listed – well you said “He wasnโt arrested.” – so that is your answer.
May 17, 2018 at 21:02
Hello. I am from Azerbaijan. I am winner 2017. My case number EU31***. Will they call me for an interview? Thank you.
May 17, 2018 at 22:29
I think you mean DV2018. If so – I don’t know – wait and see.
May 17, 2018 at 21:05
sorry but I did not get an answer about an interview transfer right now? can it cause delay ?
May 17, 2018 at 22:29
I answered. It is based on your address – so change your address if you want. Please read the FAQ.
May 17, 2018 at 21:19
HELLO BRIT, bless you for the good job u are doing, i have realised that checking dv 2019, when i mistakenly entered a wrong code it still proceeded to uve not been selected, my friends are also having same problem, is there a problem with the system where even wrong security codes are still running
May 17, 2018 at 22:43
Yes, someone else reported that, and I have confirmed it. It’s hilarious, but it doesn’t make any difference.
May 17, 2018 at 21:21
dear Brit,
having HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA and if I am 18 years old, can I participate in the dv?
May 17, 2018 at 22:25
Maybe. The exact requirement varies from country to country depending on the education system there. I don’t know the specifics of every country.
May 17, 2018 at 21:29
Hello Brit, I have gotten an invitation from a friend I met on the internet to come to the states, and my appointment date for the interview is 11th June. But my problem here is, if they ask me how I got to know him, can I say I met him online?
May 17, 2018 at 22:22
I only answer DV lottery questions. Yours is a different type of gamble.
May 17, 2018 at 23:28
Thanks so much
May 17, 2018 at 21:31
I will be there for two weeks. So B1/B2 visa

Hi Brit
My college case# OC2019000033…Lucky him. Just wanted your opinion I think it was 2008 Bulletin where OC June was 1100 and July 1800 Like it was a jump of 700….do you think any chance of such huge jump in the remaining 2 months for 2018.
Cheers.
May 18, 2018 at 02:04
No.
May 18, 2018 at 01:25
Hi first time in the lottery and we have been selected for further processing. We are Australian and our number is mid 100s not thousand. Hundred…
do I need to get my ds260 in immediately? I need to renew some kids passports etc. so when would you suggest optimum time to submit would be? Or the latest?
Thanks for all your support on this blog. Itโs so valuable.
May 18, 2018 at 02:13
Relax, no need to rush. Have a think about when you want to emigrate. You must activate your status within 6 months of the interview – so do you want to be interviewed in October (the earliest possible)? If yes – then sure – complete your DS260. It won’t matter if you need extra time.
May 18, 2018 at 04:00
Is there any chance of getting rejection after approved in the interview?
May 18, 2018 at 04:47
Yes. Some cases require additional background checks and those might reveal concerns which could cause rejection.
May 18, 2018 at 04:32
I have been getting these “Dangerous Web Page Blocked” alerts by my Norton virus scanner for the past few days, when attempting to acces the forum or immigration.com website due to Identity Threats: 1 / Phishing Attacks. The threat report then points to:
Location: https://forums.immigration.com/threads/same-photo-from-last-year-will-be-disqualified.336172 SLASH page-3 (replace SLASH with a / and eliminate the spaces before and after it).
Is is safe to access the forum or is there a security issue currently that you are aware of? Thanks.
May 18, 2018 at 04:51
I don’t know.
May 18, 2018 at 04:58
I am selected in the 2019dv but the birthday I entered in the entry was wrong could I change it? Would it do any harm?
May 18, 2018 at 05:09
You can and must change it in the DS260. That should remove any concern.
May 18, 2018 at 05:29
When will 2019 second selection of dv lottery comes ?
May 18, 2018 at 05:32
MAYBE October
May 18, 2018 at 09:47
Please good morning sir
Please my sister is part of 2018 dv winner she used her old senior high school picture of applying the dv lottery……. please want to know if there would be a problem for her using that picture …… Thank you very much
May 18, 2018 at 14:25
I don’t know your sister. So – I don’t know how old the photo is. If her appearance has changed, it could be a problem.
May 18, 2018 at 14:45
Alright……. Thanks you please
May 18, 2018 at 09:53
Hi Brit,
Do you still support your agent theory for EU?
May 18, 2018 at 14:26
THat agents were involved – YES of course. That it will result in a low issued – NO, that did not happen.
May 18, 2018 at 17:29
Can we be sure of this (low issuance) , since CNs till now ware mostly from U2?
May 18, 2018 at 17:51
Later we will have the data. Now – we just wait and see.
May 18, 2018 at 11:41
When will second selection of 2018 dv lottery comes?
May 18, 2018 at 15:04
There is no DV2018 second selection. For DV2019 – we don’t know yet.
May 18, 2018 at 12:16
Hi Brit, my case number is AF30xxx for DV 2018
If I submit my DS-260 now, do I still have a chance for interview?
May 18, 2018 at 15:04
Yes
May 18, 2018 at 12:20
Hi Bri
My wife and I got a visa on the green card. My wife is pregnant for 4 months. We want to give birth to a child in the USA. (New York).
In which states are free public hospitals?
Are the winners of the green card residents?
Do we get a free state hospital?
What documents do we need to provide?
How much does the parturition cost? about
May 18, 2018 at 15:06
Health care in the USA is not generally free. It is privatized.
May 18, 2018 at 13:06
Hi Simon,
i am a dv2019 selectee winner and i have a question.I actually live in Italy and study computer science but i have not finished yet the university. When compiling the ds 260 at the question “What is the highest education level?” i have to choose High School Education or University/No degree?
Thanks in advance.
May 18, 2018 at 15:35
doesn’t it ask for highest education level COMPLETED?
May 18, 2018 at 14:58
I’ve got 221(g) on my dv visa interview with no reasons that I know because I think I know I provided what they asked. What I still don’t know is what did they really want to have. The consular officer said my case need to go under administrative processing and she said they need paper work to do and she gave me a letter which said 221(g) and I’m worrying now. I gave them true documents. All are real. And they didn’t give me my documents and she said they will contact me when my visa is ready. I don’t remembered the exact words.I just don’t know why they refused me to give me visa.
May 18, 2018 at 15:43
221(g) is AP – a temporary refusal while they conduct additional checks. The time of AP varies. You simply have to wait.
May 18, 2018 at 15:40
Hi brit.thank you for your answer
May 18, 2018 at 18:07
Hello Simon,
I am D V lottery winner. I have made mistake (first name and middle name is joined ) on my passport. I am already scheduled for interview. My question is:
1. Can I correct my passport and go to interview or shall I just go to interview with old passport.
May 18, 2018 at 18:37
Your choice. But your passport should be accurate!
May 18, 2018 at 18:42
Hi Brit.i havent been in army ..could it be cause of refused ? thank you in advance
May 18, 2018 at 18:45
I assume you mean you have some obligation to fulfill military service? So – that depends on your local laws and circumstances.
May 18, 2018 at 18:56
no.i have some health problem .and the goverment didnt take me to military…so could it be cause to refused me ?
May 18, 2018 at 19:15
No. Take proof of that to the interview.
May 18, 2018 at 19:31
hello what is the difference betwwen ‘ready’ and ‘issued’ thank you
May 18, 2018 at 20:07
A visa.
May 18, 2018 at 19:34
Hi Mr Simon, I have recently gotten my interview date but also realised that I did not inform KCC about my change in marital status as we got married only 2 months ago and my husband is a US citizen so I won’t need him to be included in the visa. As I did not even think that I was going to be called up for an interview, I did not think of informing KCC on the change in status. Now I have written to KCC asking them to advice on the next step and they have said that they will forward my case to the consulate here in my home country and only the consulate here can tell me if my visa has been disqualified or not. I plan to write to the embassy here regarding this on the next working day if I do not hear from them. Could you advice what I should do next and if you have come across such a case before and let me know what might be the chances of my visa application being disqualified. Thank you so much and hope to hear back soon.
May 18, 2018 at 20:08
You won’t be disqualified for that. Relax.
May 19, 2018 at 02:57
Thank you so much for this! I was really stressing about it. This site of yours is wonderful!!!
May 18, 2018 at 19:41
Thank you very much..there is some questions that i would like to ask you :
1)We didnt entered our childs pasport to ds ..we will take it with to embassy.could it be there problem ?
2)When we apllied dv lottery we wrote my wifes maieden surname..although that time we were married and she got my surname..in pasport and ds we wrote with my surname..could it be problem ?
3) i chaged my work..but didnt write it to ds 260.could it be problem ?
May 18, 2018 at 20:06
Nothing you mention seems a problem to me.
May 18, 2018 at 19:42
Hi guys,
as far as I can see, in DV2019 max reported CN in EU is 30*** (I’ve browsed not only your blog, but some others forums where people are also reporting their CNs). May be there are higher CNs, but their number most probably is low. This is similar to 36*** threshold in DV2018. So, based on statistics of DV2018 KCC decided to take about 31k winners in EU in DV2019. It could mean that in DV2018 EU will reach maximum 31k. Most probably 31k is taken with some reserve and real cut off will be around 28k.
I would like to hear your opinion on that. Thanks.
May 18, 2018 at 20:05
It is too early to make a judgement.
May 18, 2018 at 20:52
my number dv2018 318xx.. am i current for this year?
May 18, 2018 at 22:44
Yes
May 18, 2018 at 21:01
Hi ,
I have been randomly selected for further processing in the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program for the fiscal year 2019 (October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2019)
However, I currently live in the United States based on a โPending Asylum Caseโ, So I am not sure whether I have fill the DS-260 form or not, as I understood that the DS-260 is for people who need to be interviewed at a U.S Consulate.
Some people told me that because I currently reside in the united states then I should not fill up the DS-260, and instead I should wait for USCIS until they start publishing the current visas on the visa bulletin and keep watching that until the visa case number come above my case number and then I can apply directly to the (I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status).
In order for me to proceed for the next step, kindly advise I have to submit the DS-260 form, or whether I have to look on the USCIS visa bulletin and wait for my visa to become current. knowing that I am currently in the United stated based on my pending asylum application.
Sincerely,
May 18, 2018 at 22:47
I recommend AOS cases do fill in the DS260 – because it opens a case file at KCC – and that file will be needed later (so it saves time). However you do not need to rush. You have plenty of time to learn about the process – I recommend you go to the link below and read the spreadsheet on the first post of that thread.
https://forums.immigration.com/threads/dv-2019-aos-only.337740/
May 18, 2018 at 23:34
My problem is in the DS-260 online form there is a mandatory entry field for Passport details (number, issue data and expiry date). My passport is expired and the application will not proceed to next step if I put an expiry date in the past..
i cannot renew my passport due to the fact that i am a pending asylum and i will not be able to renew it as i am away from my original country and they will not renew it for me. In fact as a asylum applicant i am not supposed to renew it even.
Back to the DS-260 form. there is an option “Other Travel Document Type” if i chose that option then i won’t have to enter my passport details and i would be able to proceed with the application..
Sorry for the complex scenario, but do you think selecting the “Other Travel Document Type” is correct in my case ?
I know you said there is no hurry to submit my DS-260..but for now i am just filling it up and i want to make sure that i can complete it with no problem..
Final question: Do you beleive i can still do AOS without submitting DS-260 at all ?
Thanks
May 18, 2018 at 21:12
Dear BritSimon,
First of all, thank you for the job you are doing, it is extremely helpful!
I have couple questions, and would be nice if you helped me to understand some things. I was selected for DV-2019 (EU region).
Here are several questions:
1. The issue is that less than a year ago I decided to marry my girlfriend in the end of September this year. Now, suddenly, I was selected. Do we need to rush that if I have a case number more than 20k? Looking on the stats of previous years, 20k should be only next year, so if we complete the DS-260 in September/October, after the marriage, this is completely fine and not too late, right?
2. When we get married, I will complete my own DS-260. But I should also create and complete a second form for my wife with the same case number, right? Or only state she is my wife in mine?
3. If my girlfriend doesn’t speak English well, is it an issue for an interview? Will we go to the interview together, or separately? If together, I would just help her to translate.
4. Next question is about work experience. The issue is that not all my jobs are listed in the official document – “book of employment”. Some of jobs were contract-based. I think, it’s better not to specify the jobs I can’t confirm, right?
5. When I select the field of work, should I select exactly what is stated in my official “book of employment”, or what I actually did? This question arises because, for example, on the first job I was hired as a Software Engineer, but I was still studying at the university, and by the laws of my country in documents they could specify only something like “Programmer-Technician”, and it doesn’t matter what I actually did – Software Engineering, Big Data, or whatever. So what should I choose?
6. In my country we have a kind of middle name, but it’s actually father’s name, and we use it only in our native language, but in English we don’t – even in our passports only the first and the last names are stated, so I leave the middle name blank, right? But there’s a field called something like “Your name in your native language”. Here I should write my full name as on the passport page in my native language, i.e., including middle name, right?
7. Can I ask the KCC any questions like this via email? Or they do not give any explanations?
8. Where can I read more information about the medical part? What it includes, how do I do it, what papers I should collect?
Thank you very much in advance!

1. Fine.
2. Yes, she will have a DS260 of her own.
3. No problem
4. No – be accurate.
5. Stop overthinking. Make a decision.
6. Yes – use the fields that are on the form. Legal name should match the passport.
7. Hahaha. No they don’t explain.
8. RELAX. There is plenty of time to learn.

Hi Brit,
Perfect, thank you very much!
I just want to clarify one more tiny thing: on the O*Net it’s said that “The U.S. Department of Labor provides information on job duties, knowledge and skills, education and training, and other occupational characteristics”. So, if in my country the occupation is named differently (e.g., Software Engineer vs. Computer Software Developer), but all the listed stuff (duties, knowledge, skills, education, etc.) completely matches, can I provide this occupation as mine, or the title should also match? Probably, it’s a stupid question, but I am still a bit lost after I saw I was selected… These nerves.. ๐
Thank you very much in advance!

Do you meet the education requirement? If so – stop worrying about work experience.
Slow down. Read some of the MANY articles on this site.

Hi Brit,
Yes, I’ve finished 11 years of school (complete primary and secondary education in my country), got Bachelor’s, and even about to get Master’s this year, so I should meet all the requirements ๐
Thank you once again for answering my questions in a correct and clear way, and for making me worry less. You are doing a great job for us! Many thanks!

hello mr simon can i be married after i terview and what i should do if i do it?
May 18, 2018 at 23:35
You can do that, but your spouse will wait two years for a visa – so it is better to marry early.

i have spent my interview on 19/03 and my visa are approved pending administrative processing so if i married not should i do what ?

You have left it too late to get married then. Now just wait for your AP to finish. If you get approved you can sponsor your spouse once you are in the USA.

Hi Brit, Quick question – if I qualify via the education requirement – (high school certificate/year12) – and this was approx 3 years ago – do you still need to put a work history in to cover period from when you met the requirement (ie. completing high school) to present? I’m a bit confused how it says everywhere just put education don’t worry about work history – but do you still have to supply the timeline on what you have been doing since? As I have been doing some extra courses and not been working and had a few minor health issues – would that affect my application? I have only just started employment since graduating. Thanks

You should answer all the work history questions, but you won’t be asked for proof of those jobs as you pass on education.

Brit, one question/comment: How can KCC make any predicition about last 2 VB’s when there are so much older cases that can be current (backlogs)? They even don’t have to consider new CN’s when they have enough work with older once. The number of ready cases from 2017 is decreasing. Even you suggest to new DV-2019 applicants that they don’t have to rush with completing of DV-260. That means that for example 2018/2019EU100 can be interviewed in august. What I wan’t to say is that in this moment we don’t have a clue about cut off’s for august and september. The ready cases in this year are definately not no show ups, refusals…Maybe in the past, but this year, the agent’s are pushing their clients to finalize what they started and for what the payed…Am i right?

Hi there, your blog is incredible. I have a question around tax. We have just been granted our visas and are now off to the USA to validate them. We intend to validate them and leave back to our home country in a few days before moving back permanently. Question is we have a business in NZ, would we have to start paying tax to the USA for our business from that date we become LPR ior from when we move permanently to the USA?
Or is there there a certain number of days you have to live in the USA before paying tax on international income? Thanks so much

The day you become an LPR, you are required to “report” tax. In fact, you don’t do that until the following tax season (April). Whether you pay tax on the foreign income or not depends on tax rates, tax treatment and tax treaties with that country. There is a foreign tax exclusion of around $100k – but you need to look into that yourself for your own position.
