Hi M. Brit
I have a friend who can not complete his form, when he enters his information his case number is not recognized and yet his confirmation number indicates that it is selected. can you help us? thank you
October 6, 2017 at 15:12
Are we talking about the DS260? Try with and without the leading zeros
October 6, 2017 at 16:11

I am from ethiopa I finished my high school from a grad 10 +3 years obtained a diploma from collage by information technology and I have 7 years work experience with department of Defense working as an human resources manager and administrative specialist. Am I eligible for applying DV lottery? ?
October 6, 2017 at 19:12
Yes
October 6, 2017 at 13:15
hi mr brit
i am a a winner in dv2018 , i am egyptian ; i was borned in ksa
when i applied i list that i was born in egypt
then after i won i corrected it in ds 260
will make a problem in the interview
thanks a lot for you effort
October 6, 2017 at 13:54
So – you should have an AS region number and you don’t, you have a AF region number. That means certain denial. There is no chance at all. Having the interview would be a waste of money and time.
October 6, 2017 at 17:41
i am egyptian and my wife is egyptian and she was borned in egypt … does it make a differ
October 6, 2017 at 18:13
Your nationality is unimportant. However, you should have mentioned your wife earlier. If she was *born in* Egypt you may be able to argue that you chose Egypt as “elective cross charging”. That gives you a chance – I suggest you read about it here:
https://britsimonsays.com/country-of-chargeability-for-dv-lottery/
October 7, 2017 at 15:28
i understood you but the article talk about choosing another eligibility country ..but i didn’t choose egypt as a country of eligibility i choose it by mistake in the field ( country of birth ) then in the field country of eligibility i choose yes
so its a mistake not a meaned choice … how do you think i should treat and argue about with this in front of the CO .. also do you think he may take it as a mistake
thanks alot for your patience and your great effort
October 7, 2017 at 17:17
That creates a risk. There is risk that you didn’t do things correctly. So whether to proceed or not is your decision.
October 7, 2017 at 17:38
ok i will take the risk but the page 9 fam 502.6 has 12 pages which page or which part taking about this point specifically so i can print it exactly
October 7, 2017 at 17:58
i mean which point talking about “elective cross charging” to print it
October 7, 2017 at 19:04
(d) A principal registrant born in a country that is among those for which DVs are available may derive a more favorable foreign state of chargeability from an accompanying alien spouse. For example, a principal applicant from a DV eligible country from a high-admission region may claim a more favorable chargeability from a spouse, who is from a DV eligible country from a low-admission region, provided the relationship was established prior to submitting the DV entry. In such instances, however, both applicants are considered principal applicants for the purpose of cross-chargeability and must be issued visas and apply for admission to the United States simultaneously.
October 7, 2017 at 21:02
i interrupted between part (d) you sent and the part (3) after it … which case of those are related to my problem
sorry but i am in a big worry mr simon
October 7, 2017 at 21:05
I quoted it above. That is it.
October 6, 2017 at 12:31

Hello Brit, am about to enter the DV-2019 but the names on my passport are as follows. Surname-Amoakohene & Given names-Bernard Joseph. please show me or teach me how to enter it on my Entry form.
October 6, 2017 at 13:56
Surname = “lastname”, and given name = “firstname”.
October 6, 2017 at 17:03
so that means that I should not type anything in the “Middle Name”.
October 6, 2017 at 12:07

October 6, 2017 at 10:16
Hello Brit,
I understand you’re not a lawyer etc so I am asking only for your personal opinion.
I have EU23789 and I need to prepare my air tickets in advance because it’s just not feasible for me to pay for the cost of a trip like that once I have it.
I am thinking about scheduling it by the end of June.
Now I’m not gonna hold you accountable for anything or write to you about it again whatever happens, -and risks like AP aside- do you think this number will have interviewed by then?
October 6, 2017 at 14:06
If your whole immigration plan hinges on whether you can afford a plane ticket at discounted price or a more expensive ticket, then I would suggest you can’t afford to emigrate. It takes money.
As for timeline – after January I will be able to predict better, but for now – you can guess just as well as I can.
October 6, 2017 at 09:00
Hi Brit 10q for ur collaboration!!my sponser is about to change his address/wanna to rent an other house/ within a month! Shall i unlock my ds 260 form and edit it? by the way i expect my CN will current for December.
October 6, 2017 at 14:07
You can update the address at the interview.
October 6, 2017 at 08:47
Hi.
I filled dv 2019 but i make a mistake at name. I put Nedana instead of Nenada,
I changed the place of the letters d & n.
Is there a big problem, if i won dv 2019 i will be disqualified ?
October 6, 2017 at 14:09
No
October 6, 2017 at 08:17
Can I go to a different place at first entry than what is specified in my DS 260 for the address of the person who sent the welcome letter?
October 6, 2017 at 14:10
Yes
October 6, 2017 at 08:05
Hi, is it possible to the principle dv lottery go alone for the interview if the marriage took place after the results? MUST the spouse of the principle dv applicant a company the principle applicant to the interview ???
October 6, 2017 at 14:11
The spouse only needs to attend the interview if they are also emigrating.
October 6, 2017 at 07:51

As I entered to USA and receive green cart 14 month ago with dv and stay in USA 5 day in my friend home (he send my green card to my country).justly i can not come back to there after 14 month.(Two months more than a year)
1.Can i come back to there ?
2.Is it possible the CBP officer catch my green card?
October 6, 2017 at 14:14
You have abandoned your LPR status. What a foolish thing to do. You now have to apply at your embassy for an SB-1 visa.
October 6, 2017 at 07:12
Thanks a million for your advice,I followed it to the letters and me n my family of 4 got our visas. I wish to know if the $220 for GC is applicable for my baby of 2years too? I am from Cameroon
October 6, 2017 at 08:51
Hi Sheila. So happy for you. Could you please let us know how went your interview? Especially the questions the CO asked? Will help us be more prepared. I am from Cameroon too.
October 6, 2017 at 09:59
hello AC
she just asked me about my wedding, about my kids and you need to show a lot of pictures,I practically carried about 50pics and the CO asked me about each occasion. N then the yellow paper was given to us to come collect our visas the next day n our travel packages. Most importantly NO fake documents, because it will be checked
October 6, 2017 at 10:25
Thank you for your quick reply. Did you got married after submitting DS260? Because generally they ask for pictires if they suspect fake marriage.
October 6, 2017 at 11:30
I got married four years ago,but pictures were aisled
October 6, 2017 at 12:04
Hi Sheila!
I’m also from Cameroon and we will be interviewed next month.
How much did you each in FCFA at the interview?
October 6, 2017 at 14:15
Yes. Even babies.
October 6, 2017 at 06:47
Hello Brit,
I tried to apply DV2019. But this year there is a problem about it. When I upload my photo in the application it wasn’t shown.but file name was shown. First, I checked my photo with photo tool. It was accepted. Then I upload it to application. But not shown. Is it any technical error? Because I applied to DVlottery past years without any problem. Why this year? And I tried this with windows and apple. Both were not success.
October 6, 2017 at 06:30
helo brit .i am thankful for your help.because my interview time is so near .please hlp me.
1-in the form of affidavit of support ,there is a page which concerns the interpreter .so if the sponser himself fills the form knows english very well.can we leave that page or it is must-be
2-my friend applied the dv2019 but when he submited he did not copy the page with the confirmation number as filling again causes disqualification .How can we get confirmation number’?
October 6, 2017 at 14:17
1. If you had help – fill in those details.
2. There is a place on the checking page (in May) to get the confirmation number.
October 6, 2017 at 06:20
Hello Brit,
I’m immigrating with my wife just married and we have 20k $ in our bank account.
Do you think it is enough for financial proof ?
October 6, 2017 at 14:18
Maybe. It depends on the embassy.
October 5, 2017 at 21:39
Hi mate,
I’m currently in the US on a J1 which begins mid October 2017 and runs until October 2018. Will applying for the DV 2019, put my J1 Visa at risk of being cancelled due to the non-immigrant intent needed to obtain the J1 initially?
Thanks.
October 6, 2017 at 00:33
NO
October 5, 2017 at 20:27
At the bottom of the form it says:
“If your child is a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident, do not list him/her in your entry”.
We have 1 kid and she’s a US citizen.
How do I answer the “Number of children” question? Do I write 0? That’s not true…
Do I write 1? Then the form insists I fill out her info as well and that’s against the “do not list him/her in your entry” thing… What do I do?
October 6, 2017 at 00:38
The instructions say you can list the child or not – your choice.
October 5, 2017 at 19:29

October 7, 2017 at 19:06

October 5, 2017 at 19:19
Is there any new news on the decision to cancel the hearing on October 10 on the ban on travel to the six countries?
What does it mean to cancel the date to October 5?
October 6, 2017 at 00:42
It is irrelevant – the new ban is in force.
October 5, 2017 at 18:57

Reading the instructions is mandatory. Do that.
October 5, 2017 at 15:22
Hi Brit. I’m the winner of DV2018 and my number is EU28XXX, is it still safe?
Is it ok if I filled in the ds 260 form in the education section – advanced degree? I have a master’s degree.
Should I add the high school?
Thanks
October 5, 2017 at 23:28

2. You should complete all education.
October 5, 2017 at 15:22
Hi Brit. I’m the winner of DV2018 but my number is SA2005, is it still safe? What do you think what month will be the interview?
October 5, 2017 at 23:27

October 5, 2017 at 15:16

October 5, 2017 at 23:24
No – you are the winner – so submit together.
October 5, 2017 at 14:33
Good Morning Brit. How’re you?
I’m a DV2018 winner with a consular interview in November (next month) and in a predicament. I do not have any family, relatives or friends in the US and I need to provide an intended US address. My intention is to rent an apartment once I get to the US with US funds I have been accumulating over a period of time. I have already contacted some companies with job opportunities so I have a good idea where I want to settle once my visa is approved.
What address then do I give the embassy and USCIS?
October 5, 2017 at 14:37
You have to give an address where you can trust someone to receive your GC and SSN. You need to find someone – even a friend of a friend.
October 5, 2017 at 14:49
Thanks Brit
October 5, 2017 at 14:28
Dear Sir,
I had DV visas for myself and my wife and it will expire Jan 5th 2018 and currently my wife is pregnant.
1- As I understood from your earlier advice that we can enter US for few days only to activate the Green Card and then back home and we have validity up to one year to re-enter US without problems, please confirm my understanding that re-entering after 11 month for example will not be a problem.
2- my wife is estimated to give birth in April and she will be in home country then, and when she will re-enter US the baby will be almost 5 months old, Will i need visa for the baby? and if yes how will i get it?
3- I am worried that long flights would have bad effect on the pregnancy specially she will return home after only three days from entry, is there any chance we can extend her visa so she can give birth in home country then travel with the baby?
appreciate your effort.

Hi Brit. I’m the winner of DV2018 but my number is EU25000, is it still safe? What do you think what month will be the interview? Is it ok to apply for DV 2019 as well? Thanks.
October 5, 2017 at 12:29
Yes you can apply for DV2019.
Number is fine.
Wait and see for interview date.
October 5, 2017 at 10:30
Hi Mr. Simon,
I’m a principal applicant in DV-2018
can I have my interview in the country i’m currently working in, and my family have their interview back home?
October 5, 2017 at 12:32
No. You will interview together.
October 5, 2017 at 13:49
Thank you Simon.
In travel.state.gov they mention the following:
“If your spouse and/or qualified unmarried children will immigrate at a later date and travel separately from you, they are not required to participate in your interview. They will be scheduled for a separate interview appointment. You should contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate directly to arrange separate interviews, if needed.”
https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/immigrate/diversity-visa/interview/visa-applicant-interview.html
So I can do this only on the same location?
October 5, 2017 at 13:55
At the same time. If you try and do anything else, it will go wrong.
October 5, 2017 at 10:29
I tried to apply DV 2019 today but there is a problem about uploading a photo. In the first I tried to check my photo using ‘Photo Tool’ . But that icon was not open. Some message was shown as couldn’t open. And I tried lot of times using few computers. Bus result is same. I applied last year without any problem. Please give me some information to this.
October 5, 2017 at 12:32
From your limited description – I have no idea what the problem could be.
October 5, 2017 at 14:32
I’m having the same problem right now! Don’t know how to solve it and whether it’s a glitch in the photo tool from the state dept, website’s end…
October 6, 2017 at 12:19
Hey! I was having the same problem and I found a fix. So you have to update your Flash Player to see the photo tool, it actually says next to the photo tool button to “click here” to get flash. Once you do that, complete close your browser and reopen it. It should work perfectly then! It did for me, hope it does for you too! 🙂 Good luck!
October 5, 2017 at 08:44
Hi brit,
Could it be possible to be disqualified at the KCC because it appears two different informations between the DS-260 ( for DV-2018) and the DV-2019 Entry?
Thanks!
October 5, 2017 at 12:33
Not normally.
October 5, 2017 at 07:53
I also have another question.
1. I am a dv 2018 winner and I misspelled my place of birth, can it cause visa denial?
2.Instead of writing Diploma since there was no diploma option I wrote vocational school,is it okay?
Thanks in advance
October 5, 2017 at 12:35
1. If it is a simple misspelling, normally not
2. Was it a vocational school? And if yes – did you meet the requirement BEFORE the vocational school?
October 6, 2017 at 17:23
I got C+ in high school and pursued Diploma in Civil engineering.. Was I right to say vocational school?
October 6, 2017 at 17:34
is Civil engineering a vocational course??
you should know better…
very risky
October 6, 2017 at 23:52
Should I stop Pursuing it?@Simon kindly advice me on this vocational thing
October 7, 2017 at 01:28
I already said. If your high school education meets the requirements, that is enough.
October 5, 2017 at 07:49
I am divorced and I am living abroad, faraway from my ex wife and my son/age of 18/

October 5, 2017 at 12:36
I cannot advise you to do anything except follow the instructions.
October 5, 2017 at 13:25
Thank you!
What I understood Is that I have to use same photo as I don’t have any choice and hope God to help me if I will be selected.
October 5, 2017 at 07:48
Hey simon,I tried to apply for dv 2019 on the first day and never got a confirmation page..I waited for over 45minutes and it was still saying submission process for one hour and I had to close the page.
1.should I apply again?
2.how can I know if it was successful?
October 5, 2017 at 12:37
1. If you want.
2. If you did not get a confirmation page with details, it was not successful.
October 5, 2017 at 07:42
Hi Mr Simon, I have a question about Online Application for Dv Program 2019:
Is true that eyeglasses arent’ allowed for the photo( for online application) since November 1, 2016 except after a surgery or something similar?
in particular I read this:”Effective November 1, 2016, eyeglasses are no longer allowed in new visa photos, except in rare circumstances when eyeglasses cannot be removed for medical reasons; e.g., the applicant has recently had ocular surgery and the eyeglasses are necessary to protect the applicant’s eyes. A medical statement signed by a medical professional/health practitioner must be provided in these cases. If the eyeglasses are accepted for medical reasons:
The frames of the eyeglasses must not cover the eye(s).
There must not be glare on eyeglasses that obscures the eye(s).
There must not be shadows or refraction from the eyeglasses that obscures the eye(s). ”
So Do I have to proceed without eyeglassess?
Thank you so much for the answer.

Hi Britsimon,
I am DV winner 2017 and my visa has already been approved. My visa expires on Jan 30, 2018. I am planning to make a short trip (one week) before my visa expiration date to activate my green card status. I am working here and its not so easy to get long holidays. Therefore, I cant physically wait for my green card to arrive in my address. Is it possible to come there for one week and again go back to my country?
Thank you for your time and consideration!
October 5, 2017 at 12:44
Yes
October 5, 2017 at 05:38
Hello, Simon,
Does it make a difference how early in the entry period you submit your application? I read somewhere that the rank number is assigned to your application as soon as you submit it, meaning that if you submit early and are selected there’s a greater chance you’ll win. But I also read here on your site that the rank number is assigned randomly to all cases when the entry period is finished.
Which is true here?
Thanks
October 5, 2017 at 12:45
It is obviously random and date of entry makes no difference.

Hi Simon, I am Eritrean nationality. Currently I reside in Ethiopia as refugee, and I won the DV 2018, I already had interview at the US Embassy in Ethiopia. Eventhough I have high school diploma and work experience of 2 years as elementary school teacher, I was denied the visa for no apparent reason. I was not given any specific
reason why I was denied. The denial letter said according to section 212 (5)(a), and section 203(c) followed by some general DV criteria.
Is there any way to get an answer why I was denied. Thank you
October 5, 2017 at 03:51
Probably not meeting education requirement. The best idea would have been to ask the reason for the denial. However, the denial is final, there is no appeal.

Hello Brit:
I am a DV 2018 winner and I am trying to fill my DS 260 form,I also want to add my wife on the DS 260 ,because we just got married, but the thing is each time I click on the Add Applicant on the DS 260 form a box appear and when I select my Spouse I am ask for my Spouse Surnames.
My question is: Should I put my Spouse family name as her surname or I should put my last name as my Spouse surname since we are now married and she is bearing my Surname.

Her new legal name (assuming the wedding certificate shows she took your name).

Dear Simon
If someone was born in Israel but moved to South America and have both passports
When applying DV2019 what nationality should be used and what country of birth??
Thanks in advance

I meant moved as a child, months old not as an adult or adolecent

The country of birth is what is important. The current nationality is unimportant.

Both. But make sure you read the instructions (if you had – you would not have needed to ask this question). You may be missing other pertinent information.

Coming to the US, while current after an appointment has been scheduled.
Hi Simon. When I have a question regarding DV I usually try to find the answer on the forum without bothering with questions, but now i don’t have the time, so i decided to ask.
i’ve been selected and have an interview scheduled for October 31 in Almaty Kazakhstan (while i am a Moldovan citizen currently residing in Moscow, Russia). going to Almaty in practically not an option to me due to circumstances, i can’t gather all the documents in time (i had a break and enter recently and all my documents are gone). in this situation i can loose my chance to get a visa this way.
the question is: i have a long term visit visa in my passport – can i come to the USA and pursue the Adjustment of Status way? i know this will slow down the process, but at least i will have the time to gather all the necessary documents. do you think it will work if i come now to the US and go for AOS? thanks a lot.

No. You cannot enter the USA with intent to adjust status. You will be denied.
