Hi, Simon! this and your other forum site has helped me a lot with information during my diversity visa process and now I am happily living in California for 9 months. Thank you so much for your help. A friend tried to apply to diversity visa several months ago, and I told them that it couldn’t be the official state site, since it opens around October. As they asked again for my advise to apply now, I asked them if the site they contacted several months ago has already submitted an application on their behalf, cause if they did, they will be disqualified for double entry. and yes, they did. So, they do have a confirmation entry number that starts with 2019 and consists of 16 digits and letters, but how can we be sure that it is a legit number? if we go to the state.gov check entry, it accepts only 2018 numbers. can I post here their website? how can my friend be sure that they have a legit entry number and not try to submit an other application.
thank you!
November 2, 2017 at 11:02
There is no way to validate the non official number at this time. It is very unwise to use such site, so please don’t post the website here.
November 2, 2017 at 07:11
Hi Britsimon you said you be able to give the way forward on the re-used photos once the interviews for dv2018 start. Do you have any findings on the same………
November 2, 2017 at 11:03
Not yet
November 2, 2017 at 05:54

November 2, 2017 at 04:32
Hi Brit,
I attend the interview few weeks back.it was a successful one.in embassy they said they will let me know when to collect my passports.bt it’s been nearly 3 weeks.can u estimate how long will it take for them to reply?
Sorry for the inconveniences caused.
November 2, 2017 at 04:48
Your guess is as good as mine.
November 2, 2017 at 04:50
Sorry I didn’t get what you mean
November 2, 2017 at 11:09
I have no estimate.

Hi Simon, I have a problem with my USCIS Immigrant Fee. I am already after interview and I received letter where is stated how I can pay this fee. (apparently you can pay it after arrival on the airport however it is strongly advised to pay it before).
My problem is that in this letter are my details about “Alien Registration Number” and “DOS Case ID” which are both wrong. On this paper itself is written that for example Alien Registration Number start with letter A and followed by 8 or 9 numbers. My Alien Reistration Number is just this “A06” and that is all. And the same problem I have with DOS Case ID number.
On paper where are contact details to this department they advised me to search through their website “immigrant contact form” After sending email I should get answer within 5 days. However no reply from them. Do you know what I should do?
Thank you
November 2, 2017 at 00:22
Look at your visa. The numbers are on there.
November 2, 2017 at 15:03
Hi Simon, I was already checking before and now again. Unfortunately it is not there. Any other idea?
November 2, 2017 at 15:42
No.
November 1, 2017 at 23:17
Hi, I just wanted to ask a question about something I’ve found to be a bit confusing. I’ve applied as the principle entrant for DV2019 and listed my wife as a spouse. Can my wife now submit her own application as the principle applicant and list me as the spouse or would this be viewed as a multiple application resulting in both applications being disqualified? Hopefully they don’t terminate DV2019.
November 2, 2017 at 00:22
Both can apply – that is 2 entries for 2 people.
November 1, 2017 at 22:01

November 1, 2017 at 21:29
Hello sir. After what Trump said about terminating the dv lottery program I feel so terrible. Do u think it’s going to affect 2018 winners?

Hello Mr Brit
1.can you please give me a link that I can use to check my 2In letter
2. if you can’t recollect the e-mail you used for the initial EDV can you received the 2In via DS260 email
3. Hope without the email one can still get access to your 2IN letter?
November 2, 2017 at 00:25
Check the ESC page where you saw the “selected” letter.
November 1, 2017 at 20:35

Hello sir you make great contribution in helping us have patience and you always says that this process is test of patience.please do you have an idea which highest Case number for AF region that that will be current by December?
November 1, 2017 at 20:28
No.
November 1, 2017 at 19:33
Hi Brit. I am graduating from high school in June 2018 and I am currently applying for US colleges to start freshman year by Fall 2018. If I enter DV-2019 lottery and get selected, and somehow can not get thru the interview, can it negatively affect my existing student visa status?
November 1, 2017 at 19:56
There is no point worrying about that. It’s a lottery with a small chance of selection.
November 1, 2017 at 19:25
Hi Simon i would like to get your opinion. do you think after this NYC thing that the DV lottery should now be discontinued.?
If this is how recipients act then it should be.
November 1, 2017 at 19:32
That is a ridiculous sentiment.
This guy came on the DV lottery program. So what. What difference does it make how he came 7 years ago. The question that we should ask is how and why he became radicalized during the time he was in the USA.
Regarding the lottery itself – let’s discuss the amazing success stories the lottery can demonstrate. DV winners who have come here and made significant contributions to the society here. Who have integrated, and improved the lives not only of themselves but also the people they have touched.
November 1, 2017 at 19:50
Brilliant response
November 1, 2017 at 23:59
living in America is a privilege not a right and its revocable, especially if you drive a car into a crowed of people with a greencard that says DV1 in your pocket.
this is now the second such incident involving a DV recipient. you don’t exactly need 20/20 vision to see a pattern starting to emerge hear.
November 2, 2017 at 00:16
A pattern??? 2 people out of how many people who have come here over the 20+ years of the lottery. You think that is a PATTERN? I don’t need 20/20 vision to see you aren’t thinking straight on this topic.
November 2, 2017 at 00:56
i did not say there was a pattern i said a pattern is starting to emerge, AND BY THE WAY IT IS.
November 2, 2017 at 02:32
Nonsense. Utter nonsense. Please stop with this silliness.
November 1, 2017 at 18:44
Hey, Brit
How can i check my status i’m in US i’m still holding F1 visa valid not expire, I applied for asylum one year ago but I did not change my status i fill up application for asylum and did fingerprint and pic only?
November 1, 2017 at 19:09
As I have told you before – that is not my area of expertise.
November 1, 2017 at 18:43
Maybe it’s easier for Trump to make it tougher for people to get the visa with DV Lottery than scrap it altogether. Without offense, an English language requirement could be a start. From what I understand Trump’s problem is the number of immigrants’ dependants, English language level, and education level the latter two clearly affecting what job you get there. I don’t see any reason to panic, however, let’s wait and see. 🙂
November 1, 2017 at 19:08
Yes – he can instruct agencies running background to go slower, but that is about all.
November 1, 2017 at 18:05
Trump just said “I am today starting the process of terminating the diversity lottery program,” do you think I have any chance of not making in to USA in time before Trump starts to do something about it? My CN is EU929 and I believe I will get scheduled for a February interview. Please offer your opinion on this because I am very uncertain right now.Can he issue something that instantly denies DV winners to move to the US?Thanks.Pleaase show me your response to my question .
November 1, 2017 at 18:06
EU9200*
November 1, 2017 at 18:17
I am not Brit and I don’t speak on his behalf. BUT I think a common sense is needed here. Even if you ask Trump himself you will not get the response you want BECAUSE it doesn’t depend on Trump’s wish. The termination of dv program is a process which will pass through many institutions. So the best solution/answer is to WAIT and SEE and ask Brit “Technical” questions rather than “political/administrative” ones. Thank you.
November 1, 2017 at 18:24
I largely agree, although in this case, for the reasons you mention, we *know* Trump cannot impact the lottery in progress. Regarding *future* lotteries, the actions of the terrorist yesterday might increase political feeling against the DV lottery, but the existing bill is so aggressive it is very unlikely to achieve wide support.
November 1, 2017 at 18:13
Trump is talking about the bill already proposed that (among other things) would end the DV program. But that bill has very little support – and in any case cannot be implemented immediately so there is no impact to DV2018.
November 1, 2017 at 18:17
Thank you a lot for the extremely quick response .And if all goes well(surely it will) in February when we put foot on US soil we will donate $100 to you for all the countless hours you spend helping people free of charge.
November 1, 2017 at 18:18
I don’t do this for donations – but any donation is welcomed. Best of luck.
November 1, 2017 at 18:04
mr simon
i heared a bad news that trump ask congress to terminate dv program and dv 2018
is this news true mr simon??
please i want your answer because i I am afraid
November 1, 2017 at 18:14
Trump is talking about the bill already proposed that (among other things) would end the DV program. But that bill has very little support – and in any case cannot be implemented immediately so there is no impact to DV2018.
November 1, 2017 at 17:56
hello Brits.
my interview is in 2weeks
if the CO asks me where I intend to stay in the US must I give the address in my ds260?
Because I don’t wanna live in that address no more
should I give him the new address I intend to live at?.
my greatest worry.
plss help me
November 1, 2017 at 18:15
You have to provide an address.
November 1, 2017 at 17:32
If I am a winner Ds2017 but i still dont have the interview. i have to ve scared for Trump to eliminated my possible Visa?
November 1, 2017 at 18:16
DV2017 is over. Do you mean DV2018?
Trump is talking about the bill already proposed that (among other things) would end the DV program. But that bill has very little support – and in any case cannot be implemented immediately so there is no impact to DV2018.
November 1, 2017 at 18:29
2017 winner. My interview should be the next year. I dont have to be scared For trump?
November 1, 2017 at 18:54
Again. DV2017 is OVER. So – again are you DV2017 or DV2018? Don’t answer until you have checked your case number – because it either starts with 2017 or 2018.
November 1, 2017 at 20:34
DV2017 winner
November 1, 2017 at 21:00
Then you had to have had the interview and been approved by September 30, 2017. DV2017 is over.
November 1, 2017 at 17:25
Hello Brit,
It’s been 4 months from my first entry to USA to validate my green card,i went back home but i still didn’t receive the green card is that normal ?
Thank you in advance
November 1, 2017 at 17:27
That is quite slow. Did you pay the $220 fee? Have you checked the card production/delivery?
November 1, 2017 at 17:36
Yeah i did pay before my entrance and i have checked the website uscis.gov but there is no info there.
November 1, 2017 at 18:15
So – I don’t know anything more. You need to either wait – or check USCIS Elis.
November 1, 2017 at 14:49
Mr Simon
Is trump want to cancel dv lottery and especially dv2018 ?? Because the person who responsible for The terrorist incident In Manhattan NY ,entered USA by lottery
November 1, 2017 at 16:16
Yes, Trump “wants to”. But he wants a lot of things – he doesn’t get whatever he “wants”.
November 1, 2017 at 16:27
ok but do you excpect that there is a fear for the dv program this year and the winners will miss their opportunity?
November 1, 2017 at 14:06
Hi Simon,
I’ m an Italian citizen born in Germany to an Italian mother and Ethiopian (now Italian) father. Neither of them has ever hold German citizenship/permanent residency. My entire family moved to Italy when I was 6 yrs old.
I’m aware that both ITA and GER are elibigle countries but choosing Italy as country of eligibility/chargeability would be much more convenient for me, there are less applications filed, thus more chances, am I getting this right?
Can I use Italy as country of chargeability/eligibility. This should be a case of elective cross charging. Thanks in advance
November 1, 2017 at 16:17
No. Use Germany – because it is based on country of birth. That makes absolutely NO difference to your “convenience”.
November 1, 2017 at 16:42
Ok, so no difference, even though there’s the “max 7% of total visas issued to single country”?
November 1, 2017 at 17:26
No difference. But following the instruction is important – and they don’t ask for your nationality – they ask for place of birth. Exceptions are for other cases.
November 1, 2017 at 12:48
Hi Brit
Based on Trumps latest remarks regarding the NYC terror attack yesterday being perpetrated by a previous DV winner, what do you think the chances are of them cancelling DV visa that have been issued for us winners that haven’t landed for activation yet? Is it likely that visa’s might be cancelled once issued but not activated?
November 1, 2017 at 13:55
Trump also said something strong on his tweet, copied:” We are fighting hard for this merit based immigration, no more democrat lottery system…”
As I applied for dv since my high school graduation day, and applying now, this kindda statement is really put me down, I am just hoping I will be given one single chance to have better life and better education for my children in USA through legal way/dv
November 1, 2017 at 13:57
And that high school graduation day is before year of 2000, OMG..
November 1, 2017 at 16:19
Zero percent chance of that.
November 1, 2017 at 11:32
Hey I have a friend who said he is residing in another country on the initial entry of which it was a mistake.. Let say for example you are in Kenya and mistakenly you entered you are are a Kenyan but currently staying in South Africa..The 1NL says South Africa while post of changeability is Kenya but corrected on ds and he will be interviewed in Nairobi.. Can one be disqualified?
November 1, 2017 at 16:20
Not for that.
November 1, 2017 at 11:31
Hi brit.,
My friend has a problem ..
He isa Dvlottery 2017 make landing for 3 weeks then return to his country to finish all his job there and planing to return back to usa within 2 months to have a baby there but unfortunately for medical condition his wife cant travel for her and for baby safety So the baby will born outside USA my question
How the newborn baby can travel to USA with his family?has a special visa?and after that could he got the Greencard immediately when his parents got it?
Manythanks
November 1, 2017 at 16:22
There is a process for newborn children that will happen at the arrival airport the first time the baby enters with the parents.
November 1, 2017 at 09:38
Hi Brit , thanks a lot for your support and quick answers for all here,
I have question regarding the Ds 260 , my wife is a wine for DV 2018 and we are Egyptian , we already submitted our DS 260 in may and still waiting our number to be current in the visa bullten we have a number of 8400 , my question is when i sign always to review our DS 260 status i always see above on the right that our ds 260 is currently at KCC , below there is dimensions called fees this one always in N/A the others is working like IV application list ,
but i really need to know is there any action should i do to change the fees status or this will be paid after the visa interview and also is any changes happens inside the DS 260 i can check after KCC finish their review ?
Hope you can understand all what i tried to explain above.
November 1, 2017 at 16:25
Don’t overthink the status inside the DS260. You pay fees at the embassy on the day of interview. Your case is “at” KCC until it is sent to the embassy. Now all you do is wait and prepare documents for the interview.
November 1, 2017 at 18:21
Thanks dear ? I know I have to wait , I have other question regarding the sponsor , my interview will be in KSA Riyadh region so I hear that they require sponsor papers that 3 forms I 34 and other forms , so should I start to prepare these forms if I have already communicated with a friend who is living there and can be a sponsor or wait till the interview mail first then start preparing?
Last question if I provide bank statements will be enough or sponser is a must in my case
Again many thanks to all ur support ?
November 1, 2017 at 18:26
An I-134 is always safer – so if you have a friend in the USA – start that process near the time of the interview.
November 1, 2017 at 09:28
Hello Brit,
I am so grateful for my answered question through you and from Nis Daniel
November 1, 2017 at 09:56
Hi Zac, please don’t be mistaken, I only help with question, I am NOT Simon, and he is not me lol
November 1, 2017 at 07:53
hello Sir,
can i delete my spouse form?and can i re open new spouse form again?
because my spouse form is indicating on with her father name, now i changed passport under with my name,i was changed all location of spouse form, but spouse form frond end showing still with her father name,
November 1, 2017 at 16:35
If you mean the DS260 – no you cannot delete it.
November 1, 2017 at 07:50
Hi Brit
My response was prompt. Thank you for investing both time and effort on this forum. God will guide you.
I also thank Cobby Bryant and Nis Daniel for contributing.
This my next question is on the photo requirements.
I have tried as much as possible but didnt get a pure white background in d picture, even though we have used several plain and pure white back covers. I have been getting a plain backgrounds that are a bit lighter. Some of them look as light as the illumination of a little average of the laptop.
is it tenable.
thanks a million
November 1, 2017 at 08:27
Hi Zac, speaking as photographer here, to be honest I don’t know how much is the degree of post processing allowed in e-dv, but I assume it is going to be very tight, to obtain white background, without any editing, you will need additional lighting, however, why so trouble some, just go to any photographer in your area, and ask for visa photo
As I am sure I read it on e-dv, non white background is acceptable, however background should be light
November 1, 2017 at 16:36
No need to have the background pure white. It just needs to be light and plain.
November 1, 2017 at 01:36
Hi Brit , i am winner of 2018 dv lottery my educational history as follow as high school(12 years) scored very good and joined university only 1 year and scored bad and withdrew and never back, does this affect the chance to get visa?thanks
November 1, 2017 at 05:42
The requirement is based on High School education level.
November 1, 2017 at 00:27
Hello BritSimon
First of all thank you for maintaining this amazing site. I activated my GC at the beginning of this month at a pre-clearance airport (Abu Dhabi). I am in a few immigration message boards and two people who activated (in LA though) the same week as I did already received their greencards. Is it possible that it will take (much longer) for me to receive my GC as I activated abroad and the paperwork needs to reach the US first? I paid the fees in May, ie the 120 days have already passed. Thank you.
November 1, 2017 at 00:40
The clock doesn’t start until you activate – so you have not waited 120 days. Be patient.
October 31, 2017 at 23:54
Dear Simon,
DV2018, Europe. I already got my 2NL for December interview. I have Police certificates with today date, the lady at the office told me that the certificate is valid only three months from now. I’m planning to cross the US border in March. Is it ok if the police certificates are going to be old that time ? Thank you for your help.
November 1, 2017 at 00:28
The police certificate only needs to be up to date at the interview, ie you can enter in March without any problems.
November 1, 2017 at 00:37
The police certs only need to be valid for the interview.
October 31, 2017 at 23:18
Hello Simon, do you have data for 2015 dv lottery (by data I mean everything! The selectees region by region, the number of cases interviewed, the number of visas allocated region by region). Thank you for your time and consideration.
November 1, 2017 at 00:39
I have published such date – go back and get the data from my older posts (use the calendar function)
November 1, 2017 at 08:01
Thanks Mr BritSImon,
I got everything I needed (it’s pretty clear you are doing a wonderful job,big up to you).
So, Is it wise to compare 2015 and 2018 and predict what may happen to 2018 as both years were over-selected? By “what may happen to 2018” I mean the last case number to be interviewed, the number of visas allocated, the non-show rate(which seems to be a culture in AF region(no offense!), etc. I am more concerned about AF region, (non offense!)
Once again thank you for your contributions, we all owe you.
November 1, 2017 at 16:34
I think 2015 is the most similar year BUT we don’t know the density yet. We will know more in January once we can obtain the CEAC data. Until then – “wait and see”.
October 31, 2017 at 22:48
in the marriage certificate for the interview, when i go with my wife…. we have to go with ONE marriage certificate? or one for each one?
another question
if i dont have court and prisional records… and military records… i dont have to collect any document? because i never been in that two
October 31, 2017 at 23:04
You REALLY need to read the instructions. If you had, you would not be asking these questions. So. Read the instructions.
October 31, 2017 at 23:27
Sorry. I allready read it. But i dont understand too much that. Sorry
October 31, 2017 at 22:38
i send my ds260 2 month ago…. but i travel to USA for vacations and i want to edit my last 5 visits to USA, to add the last one…… but the system i cant add or edit something, is that right and normal? or i have to put my last visit
October 31, 2017 at 22:42
In order to edit the form you have to email KCC and ask to unlock. Read the FAQ for instructions about that.
October 31, 2017 at 21:22
Hi, the passport i applied with expired before my interview date, should i just bring along the new one and attach it to the old one? Should that be a problem?
October 31, 2017 at 22:44
Yep – bring both old and new.
October 31, 2017 at 20:06
Hi britsimon ,I was work in Singapore from Feb 2014 to Sep 2014 ..and now I win in dv lottery .and I am live in my country Egypt .how I can get criminal record from Singapore
October 31, 2017 at 21:01
The instructions you should have read make that clear. Read the instructions given on the 1NL.
October 31, 2017 at 18:20
Also Mr Brit my interview comes up next week Tuesday is it possible I unlock the ds 260 form n do the adjustments before my interview date??
October 31, 2017 at 18:41
No
October 31, 2017 at 18:15
Hi Simon,
I’m a DV Lottery 2018 winner and my number is EU11XXX. I am going on a short vacation to the US next month and will be applying for an ESTA which, after reading your website, should be fine right?
Would you recommend unlocking my DS260 to update my last five visits afterwards or will it be fine if I just mention at my interview that I’ve been to the States one additional time since submitting my DS260?
Many thanks in advance!
Nina
October 31, 2017 at 18:42
Should be fine. No need to update after the trip.
October 31, 2017 at 18:02
Hello Brit
Can it b possible I do some corrections on my ds 260 for before my interview date?,cuz I have some mistakes on my parents place of birth in the form which has a slight difference to my documents e.g place of birth in the form pamol lobe but in my birth certificate lobe estate is it possible I adjust that?
October 31, 2017 at 18:43
No – once the interview is scheduled you cannot unlock.
October 31, 2017 at 16:17
Hi Brit, i wanted to ask you if i have an autheticated national examination results from the government, would getting my highschool transcript autheticated important? Im asking this because my school transcript is laminated and im afraid there is nothing i can do about it to get it authenticated 🙁 ??
October 31, 2017 at 17:18
Procedures vary by country – so use your local knowledge and common sense to prepare as well as you can.
October 31, 2017 at 14:49
I applied for asylum and didn’t have the interview with an immigration inspector. I won the dv lottery while waiting for the asylum interview and I still have F1 student visa active What should I do with the asylum application now, Can that influence somehow the dv lottery/aos interview?
Can you please make answer my question? I got confused when i try to find in different websites
October 31, 2017 at 15:02
I don’t know enough about asylum to answer you. The thread below has a lot of information.

October 31, 2017 at 12:27
Hello,
Thank you so much for your help. My husband is one of 2018 winner in his entry application he wrote the first letter of his middle name and he submitted DS260 with his full middle name, is that ok? We have time our case number is AF48+++++.
Thank you in advance.

Hello Brit
I am a student in eastern Europe my final year. During my studies here I know approximately 5 or 6 colleagues who have won the lottery by using a lot of entries and passed the interview . I am just guessing that this is possible due to a glitch in the software which runs the selection process? Or the software just can’t catch all the duplicate entries?

The software is improving every year to catch people that try this.

If you want to change, you have plenty of time to change before the interview.

Hi Britsimon My name is Emmanuel from Ghana.. My friend won the dv lottery and went for his interview last week. He was told to bring his medicals the following week that was yesterday with his passport and medicals. When he got there yesterday they told him from their records he registered twice that same year which in actual fact he didn’t register double.
What can he do please..

If the embassy has decided he submitted two applications, there is nothing to be done.

MR BRIT CAN IT BE POSSIBLE THAT THERE WAS TWO ENTRY DURING THE ENTRY PERIOD AND ONE WAS NOT REJECTED. CUZ I PLAYED THE FIRST TIME BUT DNT RECEIVE THE CONFIRMATION PAGE AND PLAYED AGAIN THE SECOND TIME. CAN THESE BE A PROBLEM AT MY INTERVIEW??
CAN THE EMBASSY IDENTIFY THAT I PLAYED TWICE
October 31, 2017 at 12:40
AND FROM YOUR ANALYSES OF THE DV PROCESS YOU MAKE A POINT THAT WHEN MULTIPLE ENTRY IS IDENTIFY AND SORTED OUT IT CREATES HOLES. PLEASE JUZ CLARIFY ME MR BRITS,.
THANKS AND APPRICIATED.

I think your Capslock is broken

They can identify double entries. However, if you did not get a confirmation page from the first entry, there must have been some problem, so perhaps that entry did not count.

Hey ! Im looking at finally getting my Cali drivers license and noticed you said you need proof of residency – ive lived in LA a year but only subletted so I have no official bills in my name. I was in NYC 4 years though so I can prove that? Or will the not matter as its for a Cali license? Also, I have a SSN number of course but no physical card, will this be ok? THANK YOU!!

Hi Simon,
I had a customary marriage done in 2015 and had an sworn marriage affidavit signed in 2016. Other than the affidavit (which I have used it for proof of marriage in a middle eastern country before with no problems) we do not have a married certificate. Question, will the embassy accept the affidavit alone as evidence of proof of marriage?
November 1, 2017 at 19:55
Some embassies accept customary marriage. However, it is always wise (in my opinion) to perform civil marriage ceremony prior to the interview – and show that proof. Others have done exactly that and been approved.
