DV interview questions
This question comes up often – what are the typical DV interview questions? People are nervous about the interview as if they are going to be asked some really difficult questions or be held for an hour being questioned like a prisoner!!!! I have known people who want to prepare and practice their answers to all possible questions – just to be safe!
Well RELAX! The interview is usually a complete anticlimax. In a typical Embassy appointment there will be two or three stages. It isn’t always like this, but this will give an idea.
First you will be called to a window and asked to present some minimum documentation (Passports, birth certs etc). You will be asked to pay for the fee ($330) and that might be at a cashiers window.
Then you will be called for the actual interview which will typically last a very few minutes – sometimes less than 2 minutes!
The CO will look at your paperwork, and may request additional documents. They then may ask general questions such as:-
“Where did you study?”
“What work do you normally do?”
“Where will you live in the USA?”
“Who will you live with in the USA?”
“What is your relationship with the people you will live with?”
For most people that is the most that will be asked – and they are not looking to trick you or catch you out. If something needs more explanation or documentation they may go into that – but again it isn’t normally in depth. If you have recently married, you can expect some questions about your marriage (where you met, what trips you have taken together and so on).
Obviously the best answers are the most real/honest answers. Don’t try and impress the CO or say what you think they want to hear. As long as you meet the requirements and have followed the instructions the visa will be approved!!!

Dear Mr. Simons,
Thanks for much help to all of Dv selectee, I am 2017 winner with case number 2017AF57xx , I am from egypt. My educational background is bachelor of pharmaceutical sciences with GPA 3.5 ranked First over my class. I am doing my masters degree now in egypt.
I also got Ielts exam for overall score of 7 and I will apply for Gre exam in 3 months as I want to pursue phd in American university. I am single and I am 25 years old.
Actually I do not have sponsor but I can prove a bank account of 8000 usd and I own a flat which can be sold for 20000 usd.
I have 2 questions.
1st based on your experience what are my chances of me being issued a visa?
2nd does having no sponsor will affect my chances and what I should write in contact and mailing in USA in ds_260 form?
3rd when I can expect my interview?
Finally, thanks again your posts are great. I wish you the best.
May 17, 2016 at 22:26
1. It depends on more than what I know about you – but your qualification is enough and your case number is good.
2. You need a US address, and you should probably get a sponsor although Cairo is very lenient.
3. It depends when you submit your DS260. The earliest it could be is October.
May 17, 2016 at 22:37
Thanks for your response, okay so i need to find an address in the USA, but why i still need a sponsor? does this financial declarations are not enough?
Glad to know Cairo is lenient, i am too nervous about the interview.

I am a winner of 2017 but I had my kid she was not around when I play the DV.can I add her before the interview date ?? What can I do ?? I have don’t have job experience but I have all my school documents
June 30, 2016 at 22:53
What do you mean she was not around when you played the DV? Do you mean she had already been born but wasn’t available so you did not enter her on the original entry?
May 18, 2016 at 10:05
Hello SImon,
I am a winner of 2017 DV and my case number is 2017EU000099XX. When should I expect my interview to be scheduled. I have some documents to collect and goind to submit my DS-260 on may 23.

hi Brit
1.Am winner of the 2017 dv lottery and i submitted my ds 260 form after 17 days from the released date which was on the 3rd may 2016.my case number is 2017AF000151XX when do you think i will get my interview date.
2.And i had a son before submitting the lottery in 2015, he was just about 2 weeks old and was having hard time taking his passport photo so ignored him.now i have won, i chosed ‘NO’ to the qst that ask wether he will be going with me and chosed ‘YES’ to he will join me later.
-can that call for a DNA test?
-Should i do it before the interview or wait till its been requested for.
-Do i have to go to the interview with him or not.he is 7 months now.
Thanks
May 18, 2016 at 15:37
Your question in point 2 means you will be disqualified. The instructions make perfectly clear that you cannot leave a spouse or child off the original entry and doing so, as you have done, is CERTAIN disqualification. You would be wasting your time and money to proceed any further.

hello Simon,
I am Dv winner 2016,my interview is on 23rd May 2016.the one who was supposed to host in US was jailed recently due that he was caught driving when he was drunk,so my question is can your host crime affect your document and be the cause of loosing a visa or it is normal you can present new host without any difficulties.please tell me about this from your experience.
Thank you
May 19, 2016 at 13:23
It’s not a problem – just provide a new host address.
May 19, 2016 at 12:57
I must appreciate you ever so much for the relaxation you have given me. My concepts: Get the right documents set and on time, be factual, proof that you are able to work and earn a living in the US, good human records and an appetite for learning with appreciable financial standing in your current country. If you are able for survive in your economy, there is a likelihood that you will not be a liability on the US government.
May 21, 2016 at 13:19

May 25, 2016 at 15:05
Hi Brit,
When I fill my DS 260, I put that I was employee of a company because I was actually but since February 29, I stopped working, I left myself a result of misunderstandings between management and myself.
I have my work certificate during the period of my contract,
my question is whether in the interview the payslip will be asked?
Thank you.
May 25, 2016 at 15:16
People change jobs. That is fine.
May 26, 2016 at 11:18
I applied from Europe and my number is 2017EU00008xxx. do you think there is a chance I will be invited for an interview. or for some reason I might not be invited and denied before the interview? thank you.
May 26, 2016 at 13:41
You will get your interview.
May 28, 2016 at 23:27
Hello Simon, I am hoping to get my VIsa within a week, but can I pay and complete the online registration upon receiving the visa for the green card before entering the US? Or will the embassy accept the cash and process the green card for me and my family?
2. Should I process green card for my 1 year and 3 year old children as well or only for my wife and I?
Thanks
May 29, 2016 at 01:54
1. You can pay online prior to or after arriving in the USA
2. All family members
May 29, 2016 at 09:35
Thanks Simon, what other documents apart from the green card should I acquire prior to or after entering the USA.
May 29, 2016 at 15:46
You will be issued with a Social Security Card (SSN). And you will need a drivers license.
May 31, 2016 at 10:22
Hi BritSimon!
As I’ve mentioned before my interview is on 14th june… Two weeks from today, however I’ve just realised my police check may not be ready in time for the interview! Just by a few days.. Is this something I can send as soon as it’s ready? I’m freaking out because it’s the last thing I have to do and I’ve only now had a chance to do it! Will not having it in time cause disqualification? Freaking out!!
May 31, 2016 at 14:07
They won’t disqualify you for that. They would put you on “AP” until you provide it.
June 1, 2016 at 21:32
Great, thanks! If I hand if in a week or so after interview how long do you think it will generally take to finalise? Also our medical s have to be after interview as that’s the only time they can fit us both in but when I called the nominated panel physician they assured us this is totally fine and common practice here. Just nervous because I’ve hear AP can delay things quite a bit so want to make sure that everything would be finalised by September 30 so I don’t miss the cut off! Or im should I try to reschedule the interview if possible to when everything is ready?
June 1, 2016 at 21:33
I’m in Australia by the way if that info helps ☺️
June 1, 2016 at 22:41
It isn’t common practice to have the medical after the interview. You will be on AP while the embassy waits for the report. It is important that they get the report well before the end of the month ofhe original interview date. Given the dates, I suppose that should be possible – correct? In that case it should be OK.
Normally people get the “nod” at the interview, and then get the visa about a week or so later. In your case you would hope to get the visa about 1 to 2 weeks after they get the medical.
DO NOT reschedule the interview. The fastest/safest method is to let the embassy “hold” your case while the medical is prepared.
June 2, 2016 at 09:08
hello Simon, thanks for your many help, i was successful in getting my VISA. i now want to do the green card registration on line but i don’t have an address yet because i intent changing my address from the one i had on the DS form.
1. Can i start the green card registration process and complete it later when i get the new address? or i have to start and finish the same day
2. what other document do i have to process apart from the green card before going to the USA.
thanks,
June 2, 2016 at 14:04
Just pay the fee online. When you arrive in the POE (airport) that will be your chance to change the USA address.

Helloo Britsimon i am 2017AF291** i went for Birth certificate last week i found that the family name is different by one letter from my passport and for the first entry i used passport names .
1. Shall i change the passport and correct misspell in ds 260
2. Is there any other person who did the same and after got visa?
3. I worried about missing my only one chance in life….
Thank you
June 11, 2016 at 14:29
The passport and birth cert should match unless you have a name change. So – get the officials to correct whichever document is incorrect.
June 11, 2016 at 14:45
Thank you for your advise .
I think to change the first entry name can not be an issue as well as i will be having an old and new passport to show the changed letter. In order to make some name at all documents.

Hello
my name is Mami and i have been selected for the 2016 DV LOTTERY PROGRAM.
My concern is that i got married in january 2016 after i have filled and saved my informations on the DS260 online form and now i need to adjust my status before my interview day and i have tried to edit this DS260form but it doesn’t work. I’m confused i realy don’t know what to do. Please help me
June 22, 2016 at 17:09
I assume you are now scheduled for interview. In which case you cannot unlock your DS260 at this time. The only option you have is to contact the embassy and see how they might agree to add your partner. The may or may not be co-operative – it varies. It’s a pity you didn’t add your spouse immediately after the marriage – you have made this much more difficult.
June 24, 2016 at 07:46

Hello Brit,
I am now preparing for my interview with my wife and son. We are from Cameroon and we have done only the civil wedding and have our marriage certificate before the initial Dv entry ( we played as a family). We have not done the traditional wedding. Hope we will not face any problem with that at the interview ?
Also while filling our DS 260 I updated our address from that of the edv. Hope its OK.
Stay blessed
June 30, 2016 at 14:13
All is OK
June 30, 2016 at 16:49
Thanks for the reply. At least I am now ready and confident everything will work out well.

Hi sir,
I won the Dv 2017, with wife, and two kids, and my case 2017AF00019xxx, but while filling the DS260 we indicated that they will not follow us, because of some financial issue . is that rigth foot path am taking
June 30, 2016 at 20:47
I realize the costs of the process are high, but you need to be aware that the DV process is faster and less expensive that the family based immigration. So – if you want to bring your family to the USA later it will take around 2 years.
June 30, 2016 at 23:04
Hi Sir,
Am saying that, my two kids plus my wife and I, will sat for the visa interview. On the DS 260, we indicated that, the kids will join us after four months of our departures. It’s righstep am taking sir…..
June 30, 2016 at 23:34
As long as your kids attend the interview and get the visa with you, they can join you later (but within the 6 month validity of the visa)

I am one of the winner DV lottery 2017 program with case number of 2017AS000035XX with foreign state of chargebility of Afghanistan. I would like to know;
1. When can I expect to get interview appointment?
2. What should I provide to US embassy along with my supporting civil documents, educational certificate and photographs? I don’t have any sponsor in the United State? What should I do?
3. If I receive the visa, how many years needs to receive American passport? If I be out of the USA for 6 months, will this affect on receiving passport? Will these absence period count to receive my passport?
4. Can I apply for white passport? How many days will take to receive it?
5. Should I be present in the USA after receiving green card?
Thanks in advance,
Omid

1. https://britsimonsays.com/dv2017-basic-questions/
2. https://britsimonsays.com/prepare-dv-lottery-interview-2/
3. 5 years, but absences of over 6 months reset that time.
4. Yes – it takes 6 to 8 weeks.
5. Yes, it is not a visitors permit – it is for LIVING in the USA

Means if my absences do not exceed from 6 months “continuously stay in the USA for 2 months and go back to my initial country” I can receive the passport within 5 years?

Dear Brit,
I have a high school certificate of four credits, a diploma certificate and I am presently doing a degree course. However, I was not given a visa, for which I was informed by the interviewer that I need five credit in order for me to meet the requirement of completing high school. Even though the requirement states that one must have a high school certificate or it EQUIVALENT and I think my Diploma plus degree courses cover for it.
Please my question is:
is it possible for the embassy to a have a relook at my case and if yes how should I go about the process?

There is no appeal process. So – if they gave you a refusal (as opposed to 221(g) refusal, then you will not get a visa. What embassy was this?

hello Simon, can i obtain a cash card, or credit card, or VISA card in the USA without having a bank account? i am intending to put on the card my money upon arrival into the USA, because by then i won’t have a bank account.
July 25, 2016 at 14:44
There are some prepaid cards like that. THey tend to charge fees etc.
However, opening a bank account is just as easy as starting one of those accounts.

Hi britsman,
I’m from srilanka and my case no. Is 2016Xxxxxxx My interview is 2016 August n I want to know that when the interview day should pay 330$. And after that if I get the visa should I pay money and how much should I pay? And how much carry for USA?
July 10, 2016 at 13:39
You pay the $330 at the embassy on the day of the interview. If approved you pay a further $165. You take as much money as you need, but obviously it is unwise to travel with large amounts of cash.

Dear Mr Brit
With the work experience qualification, the private company i use to work for pay me monthly directly without taking to the bank.
1.I dont have social security account and can it cause a denial?
2. I only have my appointment letter and payslip available and can that cause a denial?
3.And what if i have quitted the jobs and not working currently,Can i still qualify with my previous experience?
Thank you

You sound underprepared. Qualifying on work experience is hard – because the job has to be at a certain level, a professional level. So – if you employer has paid cash only that doesn’t bode well…
Read my post on qualifying by work experience. Use the search function.

Dear sir
I won the dv diversity visa lottery and got my appointment scheduled , I am 50 years old and i meet the job qualifications, my son is at USA as a student can he ask to change the location only for him to USA ? instead of making a long trip to Morocco Casablanca , and does my age effect the approval of the visa ?
note : I am Libyan & I chose Jordan as a location if the interview when submitting the DS-260 Form (( for me, my spouse and daughter )) and USA for my son, but when I checked the site for my appointment I found it at Morocco .
Thank you very much

The normal approach is that you all interview together. At this point (assuming you are a DV2016) candidate, you should not consider changing that. Bring your son to Morocco.
Now, also given the timeline it is critical you prepare well.
Have you prepared all education documents (just the principal)
Police records for every person over 16.
Marriage and birth certs
I-134 for financials support.
Make no mistakes – make sure you understand what you need to provide.
