I would like to understand, if you can explain, please, why is not a “formal course” if I’m going literally to school where kids go too, I would continue the secondary studies, just years later, it would be the same type of grade I quit(arts), the same school, going everyday… all the same but me being older. What would be the problem here? This is not a test or distance course, is literally continue my studies where interrupted 🙁
About work experience, some months ago I looked up if my degrees would meet the qualifying jobs, none of them did(if I’m not mistaken), looks like I would have to go through university, and later find a job, seems pretty impossible since find a job in Spain s**ks.
Thanks Brit, have a good weekend!

The “formal course” wording is shorthand for the “normal” path of primary and secondary education that is taken up to age 18. Adult catchups are not part of a “formal course of education”, even if done alongside the schoolkids. It’s not continuous, it’s not required, it is an informal structure taken in a setting where formal structure also takes place.
At the end of the day this would be for a CO to decide. Some COs are more lenient, some follow the letter of the law. So – you can choose to proceed if you wish to see your outcome.

Understood.
Thank you Brit, for your time and knowledge, keep doing this so good.

Hi Sr. Britsimon,
I hope you’re doing well!
I am from Africa (Angola) and I’ve already applied for the 2025 dv lottery program. But I have some questions, I would like you to help me understanding:
1 – Me and my spouse, we made different applications (one application, me as the main applicant with my spouse and son as derivatives and another application, my spouse as the main applicant with me and our son as derivatives) for the 2025 dv lottery program. But in our separated application, we used the same email contact (for some more information we should receive in future via email). Should that cause any problem for our application/process?
2- Accordind to that dv lottery photograph’s rule, that says: do not wear a hat or head covering that obscures the hair or hairline… Should a woman be disqualified by wearing a wig in the photograph and during the process?
3 – Supposing that in the birth certificate and others documents, someone has his/her all names written out in full without no abbreviation. But in passport, one of the name is written abbreviated. For example:
* Name in birth certificate and others documents: Paulo Nelson Pedro Kiako.
* Name in passport: Paulo Nelson P Kiako.
My question is: should that situation cause any kind of problem for our application/process?
4 – It is advisable to fill out the dv lottery forms (DS-5501 and DS-260) in English characters, for example: writing O,E,N and not Ó, Ê, Ñ (because the System may not recognise some not English characters). And there are also some information that say that you must write your name as it is exactly written in your passport. Supposing that my name in my passport is: João José Paciência.
Questions:
4.1 – Should that be a problem if I write my name in this way (exactly as in passport): João José Paciência?
4.2 – Should that be okay if I write my name in this way (just obeying the English characters): Joao Jose Paciencia?
4.3 – Should that be okay if I write as it is in 4.1 or 4.2?
5 – Supposing that you started working in a company as a Technician for example, for 3 years. And after, you are updated for Engineer, but keeping doing the same tasks as Technician. As an Engineer, you are working for 2 years. How should you fill out your years of experience in DS-260?
5.1 – Should you fill out the years of experience as Technician (3 years) separated from the years of experience as Engineer (2 years) or should you join both years of experience just as only experience time (5 years) and shoose just the tittle Technician or Engineer? once the tasks did not change.

1. No
2. Depends on how obvious it is.
3. No
4. The system won’t accept the additional characters.
5. It is far too early to be asking that – get selected first.

Hey Brit,
Oh didn’t know about your wife, say “hola” from me 🙂
Let’s go to the point then.
We have to discard work requirements because I don’t meet them, I’ve been studying for the last 6 years and didn’t work enough time or had jobs that don’t qualify, I’m not working at this moment, all that said..
I’m going to tell my information education in Spanish and English but I don’t know the equivalent in USA( I will try though).
1- I have completed until grade 10th (this one included), 4° ESO in Spain, finished in 2007.
2- the other qualifications are like associate degree or vocational training(don’t know which one because because I feel internet is vague about this, but I think it could be like vocational training)
A) 2015 – 2017. FP1 Grado medio auxiliar administrativo (administrative assistant)
B) 2018 – 2020. FP2 Grado superior técnico de laboratorio clínico y biomedico (medical laboratory technician)
C) 2021 – 2023. FP1 Grado medio técnico emergencias sanitarias ( This one is EMT in the US even though I studied for 2 years and studying EMT in the US is much less time, but im not paramedic because I’m not allow to give medication)
3- As you can see the gap between formal school, and the other qualifications is 10 years, between those years I tried a couple of time the two last years of formal school but unsuccessfully because I had some personal matters, I quit in the middle of the course.
Some days ago I have the feeling that I don’t meet education requirements even though I have higher qualifications(we all know thats a grey area and a OC are picky and wants high school) and if that is correct and I don’t qualify for DVL, I’m willing to register myself in a school and end my 2 last years of high school in the formal course. Since you can assure me the test I planned to do is not acceptable and it’s like GED I think is the only option, have the chance to live in the USA it’s very important for me, so, I’m willing to fight for it.
Thank you, Brit 🙂

Enrolling in school now won’t fix the problem. That would not be a “formal course” of secondary education.
You higher education is all vocational and therefore not taken into account.
You can’t fix the education path. Your only chance would be work experience in a qualifying job (for 2 years out of the previous 5 years).

Hi Brit!
Hope you are fine.
I have some doubts about education requirements, I tried to look up information, I invested too many hours trough the internet with no success , so I thought I could ask you, let me explain.
I don’t have high school and I’m planning to studying it even though I’m 32, I have others degrees that are higher than high school here in Spain but I read that’s not acceptable on the USA and also because I don’t have the two last years that are the high school. I have 3 degrees that I think on the USA system are called associate degree or vocational degree, and one of them allow me to go to the university, as I said, here in Spain, I know it’s not the same for the USA, I just want to give more details.
Well, here in Spain we have something that google translator says is called “free baccalaureate tests for people over 20 years old” but not free like no cost, free like you don’t have to go to school everyday 😀
Anyway, this is a test that Spain celebrate every years, there are exam of the all subjects from high school , so you prepare yourself at home and later when there is a official date you go to the school where you have to examine, do the exams and if you pass them you get the high school diploma, it’s another way to obtain high school but it’s exactly the same, is something official and it’s not like the GED(which I know is not acceptable), but I have my doubts since I don’t have to go to school, so you think this is an acceptable way for the OC to get my high school?
Just to clarify I have the 10 years courses of elementary and secondary, I just need the two last.
My doubt is because I read that correspondence programs are not acceptable either, I looked up what’s that but I still don’t understand that system at all, it’s like study online, but not sure, so I wondering… are this tests classified as correspondence program? If I try other way and study distance high school , which is I register in a school(this is not the free way) but study at home too during 2 years but just have to go to do the test every three months is it classified at correspondence programs too? I don’t know…
I’m sorry my text is so long, I like to be really specific and give details, this may help for a better answer, also I had to explain how works some things here and such…
Hope you could give me some clarify information about this. Thank you in advance for your answer and for you precious time, you know you are a lifesaver here.
Have a good weekend!

First, it would have been easier to tell me the education level you have. My wife is from Spain, so I have some context.
The test you are mentioning is equivalent to the GED. They are tests that check to see if your education is to a certain standard. For the GED it establishes that your education is at the level of a High School graduate, and therefore could enter a University.
So – let’s get to the point.
What schooling did you complete (successfully).
What are the other qualifications you gained?
How long was the gap between formal school, and the other qualifications.
What type of work do you do?

Hi Simon,
I made the application for DV2025, at the time of submitting it the site crashed and I didn’t get the confirmation.
So I filled it out again and this time I got the confirmation number.
Now I am afraid that even the first time the system generated a confirmation on their side and I am permanently disqualified for double entry.
Do you suggest writing to someone to point out the problem?
November 4, 2023 at 08:59
1. There is no one to whom to write.
2. The site explains precisely this scenario, it’s a pity you did not read that. You have nothing to worry about.
November 4, 2023 at 09:28
Thank you Simon.
I read FAQ 19-21, my fear is that the confirmation number to them appears to be issued even though I did not receive it

Hi Mr Simon,
I want to ask that my husband country of birth is not eligible to apply so he will be using mine as it’s eligible, so even in that case we can submit 2 different entries to increase our chance of selection or we should submit only 1 application?
October 16, 2023 at 22:37
2.
October 17, 2023 at 08:07
Thank you for ur reply. We will be submitting 2 applications then.

Hi Brit
I’m already USA with no Status even though I have filed an asylum documents .I wish to ask some few questions
(1) It is possible to play DV lottery with my wife and children who are in my country of origin Cameroon?
(2) can my wife play with children and include me as a derivative?
(3)if someone who is already in USA with no Status win lottery DV lottery is it possible for him to be awarded a green card?
October 31, 2023 at 09:07
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. It varies by case. Enter the lottery and if you win you can try to process, probably in your home country.
October 15, 2023 at 06:31
Hi Mr Simon,
I am married and previously we would only submit one entry. Is it true that both me and my spouse can fill separate entries (granted each of us mention spouse details) or not?
Please advise.
Thank you
October 15, 2023 at 09:13
Yes that is true. Each of you enters for yourselves, and lists the spouse as a derivative.
October 6, 2023 at 19:28
Hello again Simon, this question is a bit odd. Even though, I had won DV 24, I’m planning on applying for DV25. I’m going to be awarded Advanced (Master’s) degree at the end of May.
When I enter the lottery right now, do I need to indicate that I only have Bachelor’s (aka the highest degree right at this moment)?
October 7, 2023 at 08:38
Yes
October 6, 2023 at 19:14
Hi Simon,
I have read somewhere that my spouse and child can apply on the bases of my birth country? Just reconfirming…also when my 18 yr old son applying form is not asking for parents details….does this mean if at all selected only my son will be eligible to move…then how about parents or siblings.
Thanks
October 7, 2023 at 08:38
Derivatives on your selection will be charged to your country.
A spouse can also choose your country for their own entry. But an 18 year old child cannot do that.
If a child wins they cannot take parents.
