As expected the 2018 data is now available in CEAC. You can check your own case number at this link, by removing the leading zeros from your case number. So 2018AF000012345 would be entered as 2018AF12345. Please read at the bottom of this article to know what the status codes mean.
OK As many of you will know, the CEAC system is where anyone can check the current status of specific case numbers. We now need to work together to gather the CEAC data which will keep us informed of progress to date including how many visas have been approved already, denials AP and so on. Using that data we can get a more accurate prediction of month to month VB progress and we can try and predict the final cutoff ranges with better accuracy.
So – as explained before we need the DV community help to solve captchas. Every captcha solved gets us one more case. Initially, it will take a great effort from many people to solve the captchas, but as we continue over the coming months we will not need to recheck approved or denied cases, so the work will get easier.
This is made easy when lots of people help. So – please get involved and share the work. Give a few minutes every day to solve some more captchas and with that information we will all benefit from better understanding.
This is all made possible by a very smart 2018 DV winner, Xarthisius. He has created the software that facilitates the captcha solving, CEAC scraping and has even produced some really useful tools to allow people to analyze the data. You can take a look at the 2017 data to understand what we will be able to see.
So – to help get the data please login at this site:
https://dvcharts.xarthisius.xyz/login.html
The charts and analysis tools are available here:
https://dvcharts.xarthisius.xyz/
Looking at the data from 2017 shows the issued visas per region as well as denials, AP and holes. All essential to understand the VB progress and final cutoffs.
Let’s go and get the data!!!
So what do the status codes mean.
The first status for every case is “AT NVC”. You can ignore the text on the case – the case has not been passed to NVC. What this status means is that the case is in one of the following situations.
- The case is not yet current.
- The case is current, BUT the DS260 has not be submitted at all, or it was submitted but not processed yet – and therefore not scheduled.
- The case is current, the form is processed, but it is waiting to be scheduled (typically because the cases have not yet been sent to the embassies yet).
“In Transit”
This status is shown for a brief period when KCC has scheduled the interview, and transferred the case to the embassy. However, the embassy has not yet updated CEAC to acknowledge they have received the case.
“READY”
This is the next status after in transit. It means the case has arrived at the embassy for interview. Sometimes a case will continue to show ready even after the interview.
“Issued”
Pretty obviously – this is the status we all want to see! The interview took place, was successful and the visa has been approved/issued.
“Refused”
This is the status no one wants to see, meaning the interview took place and the selectee was denied. A derivative can be refused, while the principal is approved. However, if the principal is refused – all the derivatives are refused also – even if the embassy fails to update CEAC.
“Administrative Processing”
This is when someone did not have all the documents at the interview OR some additional checks are needed before the case can be adjudicated. AP can last a few days or several months. The status updates during that time are meaningless.
Derivative number.
For cases that are scheduled we can see the related derivative numbers. Case 01 is the principal and derivatives are case 02, 03 and so on.

Hi brit happy new year to you and your family. I will help you. I went to the first link that you give us in this post and it said:
Please follow the instructions you received from the National Visa Center (NVC) that list the six steps you must take before NVC can schedule your visa interview appointment. This includes submitting to NVC various fees, forms and documents. Once NVC has received all the required items, they will let you know if anything is missing or incomplete. You can also find these instructions online at http://nvc.state.gov (English) and http://nvc.state.gov/espanol(Spanish). You will find contact information for NVC at http://nvc.state.gov/ask.
It is normal right
Thanks
January 1, 2018 at 07:06
Yes, that is normal. You can safely disregard everything it says.

I’ll do what I can to help. We interviewed in Sydney a couple of week ago for OC with a number in the 300’s and were approved. I just wanted to say a big thank you for the extraordinary help that your site was in helping us negotiate the whole process. We have our activation trip already planned for Austin/Cuba/NY at the end of April. After numerous vacations to the US in recent years, it’s going to be interesting to visit with the knowledge that we will be able to make a permanent move there. Thanks again.
January 1, 2018 at 10:46
Hi Tony,
Out of interest as our interview is in March. How long did the whole process on the day take? We’ve heard they don’t always take card to pay for the fees as well?
Congrats on being approved 🙂
Thanks
Mala
January 1, 2018 at 11:09
Hi Mala. We were in the Sydney Consulate for about 1 1/2 hours all up. There were quite a few people there at the same time as us, (Interview was for 9.50am), and we had a lot of sitting/waiting time. They check your documents at a desk just before Security and ensure they are in order, then you are sent through Security screening to another lift, and from there up to the actual Interview area. When you arrive here you use a ticket machine to get a number. You will firstly be called up to a window to present your documents, then instructed by that person to go and pay your fees at another window. We used a major bank Visa card without any problem. You then return with your receipt to the window, and will be further instructed to again take a seat and wait to be called up a second time. We waited about 45 minutes. The second time you are called is to a window for the actual ‘Interview’. This took about 4 or 5 minutes all up. Very simple process.
Hope all of this helps. Good luck with your Interview.
January 2, 2018 at 01:19
Hi Tony,
Thanks so much! I was envisioning a couple hours down there! But that definitely helps clarify the process.
Good luck with your move.
Mala

Thanks for the help and good luck with the move!
January 1, 2018 at 07:52
hello mr BritSimon. please what a difference between nvc and kcc? because in the ds260 file, the case is at kcc. in the status file check the case is at nvc. i m going to help you now.thk
January 1, 2018 at 16:47
THe “At NVC” status is just a generic status – your case is not ever actually handled by NVC. Read my article above for meanings of statuses.
January 1, 2018 at 08:28
Hello Dear,
Wish you a happy new year to you and your family.
I tried to check the status of my case over the CEAC website, but every time i entered my number, it shows this massage: “Invalid Application ID or Case Number”.
So, all the cases status updated have been released or there are any issue?
Thanks,
Ahmad

January 1, 2018 at 13:18
Hello Simon, I check my case status and the reply is almost telling me that my form has not been sent and so on…. I sent my form since july 2017 or are they trying to say I am not current in other word?
January 1, 2018 at 16:27
Please read the article above to check the meaning.
January 1, 2018 at 19:28
Finally got the meaning.thanks.
January 1, 2018 at 13:50
First of all, happy new year. I have a couple of questions. The sponsor we introduced in de ds260 has moved to another state, so our plans are others now. We have decided to go to another state with another sponsor.
Do we have to unlock the ds260 and change de data or can we do it at the interview?
If so, do we have to do it for the 4 members of our family or is it just enough for the DV winner?
January 1, 2018 at 16:27
You can do that at the interview – although personally I would do that in advance to make sure the address is correct on all four forms (because that is where the GC will be sent).
January 1, 2018 at 14:23
Sorry, one more question. For the question: Have you ever served in the military?, my husband answered no, but I´m not sure if the obligatory military service is part of it. I mean, should he has answered yes if he has done the military service. Other than that, he hasn’t had anything to do with the military.
Thanks in advance.
January 1, 2018 at 16:25
He served in the military. He must correct the form.
January 1, 2018 at 15:44
Now, when I saw trose datas, I understood, that EU26XXX has no chance for interview: 4500 interviews in EU for October-November, and 2600 VISAs were issued (in Europe alone). No chance fro EU26xxx for interview, and also no chanse to anyone who is above the mentioned number. Alas.
January 1, 2018 at 16:24
Are you sure you can meet the educational requirement? Because we have had this same idiotic comments from you before, and I would have thought that you must by now realize you don’t know what the heck you are talking about and that my guidance on VB is proving accurate. I really dislike consistently negative people, but there is no need for your ignorance to continue. Be negative all you like, but you should learn to listen to people wiser than you and stop your nonsense.

January 2, 2018 at 05:45
Sir, how did you know that that there was 4500 interviews !!! It was the cut off number. I checked two bulletins and only 6000 apr. person (with derivates) got visas. For two months the number is low. There is no need to be negative at all.
January 1, 2018 at 17:26
Happy New Year !!! Hello, my status is “AT NVC”, but my number is big 30 ***, so I’ll check again. Thank you Simon for everything, in the new year I wish you health and luck to you and your family !!!
January 1, 2018 at 17:28
Hi, I’ve seen the data and I’ve found out that they reached 43000 CN only ?
January 1, 2018 at 19:26
What region? EU?
January 1, 2018 at 19:51
no, AF
January 1, 2018 at 20:05
So I don’t know what you mean then. We know very well there are many AF cases above 50000.
January 1, 2018 at 17:39
Hi
Happy new year
I asked to unlock my DS-260 the previous month and now need to unlock the DS-260 again
is this affects I asked to open my DS-260 the previous month and now need to open the DS-260 again is this affects
scheduling of the interview
My case 2018AF00028***NVC
January 1, 2018 at 19:26
No affect.
January 1, 2018 at 18:08
Thank you for your answers. We are going to request the unlock of our forms.
But before changing the address I need to understand something.
I don´t know where we are going to live, because although we may stay with some friends at the beginning we will find our own house.
These friends don´t know if they are staying in the United States very long after we arrive, because their visa expires.
So their address, which will be ours at the beginning is not valid.
Should I put other friends´ address even if they are in another state and we are not staying with them?
If I put an address where I will not be living, will the post service accept a letter under another name that is not the owners?
I just don´t want the GC get lost because I haven´t done it the right way.
January 1, 2018 at 19:25
The USA address needs to be an address that is safe to receive your GC, even if that happens several months after you move to the USA. It does NOT need to be the address where you will actually live.
January 1, 2018 at 19:48
Thank you so much once again.
January 1, 2018 at 18:42
Dear Sir,
Happy new year,
My case status is under administrative processing, I had most of my documents at the interview except police certificate but they gave me back my passports for medical check issues and asked me to drop them after the medical check in to their box inside the embassy, I dropped the passports and police certificate’s letter number which was given me by the ministry of foreign affairs to their drop box.
It is about 2 months for my interview but I did not receive any instructions to follow it.
According to the CEAC data my case last update is 19 Dec 2017.
I really don’t know what to do, could you please guide me in this regard,
Thank you,
January 1, 2018 at 19:23
You don’t have to do anything. You just have to wait. It’s a shame you were not completely prepared at the interview.
January 1, 2018 at 19:15
Of course I’ll help. I’m trying to collaborate with this mission, but having a toddler in the house doesn’t help me to do my best, also I changed from doing on my cellphone to do it on the laptop, it’s way easier with a computer.
I checked my mother’s case # to see how accurate was CEAC and it’s very accurate and updated. I loved seeing the highlighted word: “Issued”, which it was updated last December 20th, same date printed on her IV on her passport that sh already has in her hands since few days ago. Soon I’ll post her interview experience on the appropriate page of your blog.
In relation to that, why people is doing questions here, when we have the “Ask questions here” page. Seriously Brit Simon, I don’t know where you get the patience, but I admire you for it.
Finally, to everybody who is reading this, please collaborate and solve some captchas, it’s easy to do and with your help the Brit Simon’s team can promptly have the CEAC data analyzed to have everybody informed about DV2018.
January 1, 2018 at 19:20
Thanks for the kind words and any help you can give.
January 1, 2018 at 19:45
Happy new year! Thanks for all your help and effort!

January 1, 2018 at 21:30
No. Please use some common sense.
January 1, 2018 at 21:42
Dear. Simon HAPPY NEW YEAR MERRY CHRISTMAS From this article above can we predict the chance of interview for 21550 from egypt ? and which the month will be interview ?
January 1, 2018 at 21:54
Once we have the CEAC data predictions will be easier.
January 1, 2018 at 23:10
Should I mention the name of the petionner or the receipt number or it’s just simple to say that I had someone filed a petition on my behalf with the uscis I 129f and it was by uscis because lack of evidence thank you
January 1, 2018 at 23:52
You keep writing new comments without clicking reply. That means more work for me to try and understand the context of your questions – and honestly – I am too busy. So – use reply and make your questions clear.
January 2, 2018 at 00:03
In the ds 260 there is a question saying have you been visa and I answered yes because I have someone who field a petition on my phone with the uscis petition for alien fiance and it was denied by the uscis and when I explained in the ds 260 I only said that the petition was denied by uscis because lack of evidence and the petition is I 129f I didn’t mention the name of the petitioner is that ok
January 1, 2018 at 23:19
Because the receipt number is for the petitioner not for me thank you what I think they can know about it without mentioning her name (the petitioner

Hi, there is no DV2017 CEAC Data from the embassy in Sydney? Will this follow? Thanks, Lolz
January 2, 2018 at 05:10
The 2017 data is published – what do you need?
January 2, 2018 at 14:33
Hi Lola,
there was a typo in a mapping between embassy codes and city/country tuples. I fixed that and uploaded a new version of charts’ data. Sydney should show up now. Before you revisit, please make sure you empty your web browser cache.
Cheers,
Xarthisius

Dear Britsmon ,
Happy new year!!!
I checked my status its says at NVC
and memo below
Immigrant Visa Case Number: 2018AF21xxx
Please follow the instructions you received from the National Visa Center (NVC) that list the six steps you must take before NVC can schedule your visa interview appointment. This includes submitting to NVC various fees, forms and documents. Once NVC has received all the required items, they will let you know if anything is missing or incomplete. You can also find these instructions online at http://nvc.state.gov (English) and http://nvc.state.gov/espanol (Spanish). You will find contact information for NVC at http://nvc.state.gov/ask.
so my question is
1,what it mean you must take before NVC can schedule your visa interview appointment. This includes submitting to NVC various fees, forms and documents. Once NVC has received all the required items, they will let you know if anything is missing or incomplete.
2,am I supposed to pay fee, submit documents and fill form before interview…its not clear for me?
3,i thought I will receive via my email to check my status for interview when my case is current ;therefore why is it asking to fill forms ,pay fee ,and submit documents…please I need explanation.
many thanks!!!!
January 2, 2018 at 15:32
Read the article above for all the explanation.
January 3, 2018 at 10:05
hello Simon
happy new year
my questions
1,what does mean Affidavit of Support? and does it apply for DV winners? I won dv 2018 so my sponsors in USA should they know what Affidavit of Support mean/
2, should I be prepared for Affidavit of Support before interview.
thank you 🙂

Dear Brit,
After we finished solve the Captcha, how many days you need to show us the result report?
January 2, 2018 at 15:31
I will publish some explanation of progress later today (my time zone).
January 2, 2018 at 10:38
Hi brit Simon í checked the ceac and my case is ready
January 2, 2018 at 14:24
Hi Simon,
First of all, I wish You all the best for the New Year 2018 !
I just checked my case at the CEAC website.
It’s working very well, and after entering my details there, was displayed : ISSUED ?
For me, and for my derivatives (my wife and my child).
I knew this result, because from Nov 2017, I have the passports with Visas.
A big thank for you Simon and for Xarthisius. Your job is amazing.
*** Good Luck for all the DV Winners ***
God bless You and little Sophia ?
January 2, 2018 at 15:20
🙂
January 2, 2018 at 19:52
Hi brits. I managed to place 5th on the Captcha puzzle this time around. I noticed that the number of captchas left increases and decreases randomly;could there be an error in the software?
January 2, 2018 at 22:04
Thanks for your effort. No – it’s not an error. What is happening is that the system is now trying to find the max case numbers so the number left to solve will seem bizarre for a while – but it’s just part of the process to find the max number. In fact we are going to have to check over 110k numbers to find all the real cases, but we only need to get that full range at the beginning, and then the checking will get a bit smarter later. There won’t be any need to check a number we know to be a hole, for instance. The 100k comes from the max numbers in each region. We know AF is about 53k, EU is in the low 40k range, AS about 13k, OC and SA are about 2500 each. So – that is the 110k. But of that 110k only 30k were current, and MANY of those 110k will be holes. Make sense?
January 2, 2018 at 21:10
Hey Brit
I hope you had a Merry Christmas, and here’s hoping to a wonderful 2018. I have what may be a problem, I read a while back on one of your posts that you said the embassy in South Africa (where I will have my interview) is “known to ask for financials.”
Does this mean that I need an Affidavit of Support? It will be next to impossible for me to attain one of these, as the friends I know in the USA already said that they can’t help me.
Or, would it be fine if the company I work for (my dad’s company) can support me financially, and I prove this?
I also read in another post that if you are 1 person heading to the USA, you must show that you have $10,000 in your bank account at your interview, which I will have.
Should these two things, the support from my dad’s company, and the funds I have amassed, show that I don’t need an AoS?
Thanks for all your work, I’m trying to do my small part with doing the CAPTCHA’s for the CEAC tool.
January 2, 2018 at 21:49
A sponsor is only considered if they are in the USA. Other than that, you might be OK with the savings, but an I-134 is always the safest bet. Some people in the USA might not know that the I-134 creates NO enforceable financial obligation.
January 2, 2018 at 21:27
Hey there,
Submitted a few yesterday and will try to do a few each day when not busy.
Just one question that looks like a previous I posted but I want to make sure: for my case, it says « ready, 01 pers. »
That is normal my husband isn’t mentioned since we got married after the entry, right?
Thanks for your help, now it’s our turn to help! 🙂
January 2, 2018 at 21:47
Yes that is normal. Sometimes, once scheduled the embassy update the CEAC with the new derivative, but not all embassies do that consistently.
January 3, 2018 at 10:34
hi Brit, can the holidays slow down the ds260 process at KCC? is there a statistic from previous years that show lower numbers for the upcoming visa bulletin? thanks!!
January 3, 2018 at 16:39
Yes the holidays affect the amount of progress made in November/December to some extent.
January 3, 2018 at 12:20
Hi Brits i ve been trying to solve some some captchas for a long time now, but anytime i try i get a text which says ”no captchas available to solve”
tried both with phone and pc
how come?
January 3, 2018 at 15:14
Sometimes the scraper gets clogged by orphaned sessions. I try to fix that as soon as I notice it, but it may take some time. When you get that message, take a 5-10m break and try again later.
January 3, 2018 at 12:46
Dear Simon,
Happy new year.
I’ve tried to solve some captchas but it keep saying “Could not get a new captcha. Please try again later”! After taking your time as much as I do I really wish I could help. Is it normal?
Btw, is it normal for the case status to be on AP before the interview?
January 3, 2018 at 16:28
Try a different browser.
No, AP normally occurs after the interview, however, one embassy (Moscow) places many cases in AP status prior to the interview. I am not certain why that is, although I do now they have additional security procedures at that embassy.
January 3, 2018 at 17:00
Thank you so much for your reply,
Our interview is with Guangzhou consulate in China, and I am Iranian, So it might be because of travel ban, right?
But we were supposed to be given the chance to go to the interview to present waver package… (Our interview is scheduled in February and we got out 2NL)
If our case is on AP, does it mean it won’t go to AP again after the interview? (I mean for that embassy in Moscow, do they do the AP before interview instead of after it, or the same cases go through AP both before and after interview?)
Thank you for your time.
January 3, 2018 at 17:06
Yes it could be for that reason. Given that Guangzhou don’t see many DV cases, they must have developed their own procedure.
No – being on AP now does NOT mean you won’t be on AP after the interview. Even prior to the travel ban Iranians typically had several months of AP.
January 3, 2018 at 13:22
Hello simon,
I have helped you in solving and i will solve everyday as much as i can thank you for your help.
I want to ask my wife is the principal applicant and she is syrian(syrian passport) but she is born in saudi arabia Not the nationlaity only born there and i am lebanese
is the ban affect us ?
If no can you give a refrence for the answer
Thank you
January 3, 2018 at 16:22
I am not certain. SA is “odd” with the way it treats foreigners born in SA. So – the way the embassy will treat that is uncertain and I cannot find any written guidance on that.
January 3, 2018 at 15:47
Am doing it and its working perfect.
January 3, 2018 at 21:44
Hi Brits
Can an applicant with a high case number such as 2018AF479XX, and whose
status is “AT NVC”
1. Have hopes or a kind of guarantee that his case will be programmed?
2. Are those with status NVC within the range of sure applicants to be invited for interview?
3. Is it possible at this point in time to know the number of already issued visas per country?
Thanks and God bless u.
January 3, 2018 at 22:27
1. Hope, yes. Guarantee, NO.
2. See 1.
3. Yes, but that isn’t really relevant since no aspect of the program suggests a country quota.
January 4, 2018 at 14:16
Works again
January 4, 2018 at 19:38
Could you explain for me what are the six steps you posted on you page are?
And as we know we used to pay the visa payment at the embassy what is this account that is mentioned in the steps?

We have completed the first pass.

Brit if the cases are ready today is because they will be call in the next visa bulletin or they are appoinments for january and february?
thanks.
PD. I cant open dv2018 ceac data

Ready means scheduled. If the case remains ready after the interview month, it might be a no show, or simply that the embassy did not update the status.
The file is a csv, you must import it to Excel or similar.

January 10, 2018 at 08:24

Today we are interviewed at January 09,2018 and it was good and the CO tolled us congratulation and he said collect your visa after one week but when i am checking in the link it states “Administrative Processing” so what do you mean he gave already congratulation latter and yellow on line fee at U.S.A paper

Cases almost always show AP for a day or two before changing to issued. That is normal. If AP continues to be the status after a couple of days, that is true AP.
January 11, 2018 at 08:43
Thank you brits exactly now issued

Hi Brit,
first of all a warm Thank you from Europe for your great work on here. As I am reading through the comments – amazing how much effort you put into answering all the questions alllll over again :).
Now I guess I have one as well :). Something’s weird. First my status was “Ready”. After checking again at some other day it now is “AT NVC”. Shouldn’t it be the other way round?
my case no. is 2018~EU22000
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I am not sure how to read this table:
https://britsimonsays.com/historical-visa-bulletin-numbers/
According to the table my case number for DV2018 could be scheduled sometimes approx. around ……??
Thanks and regards,
Phelix

Your status was never ready – you checked the wrong case.
January 12, 2018 at 18:02
Hello Brit. I checked my visa status yesterday and it was last updated Jan 9 (medical eximation were at jan 8). I checked today and it is last updated Jan 12. What does this mean, they received a decision for my case? When do they uptade cases?
My interview is in Jan 16.
January 12, 2018 at 18:03
So you haven’t interviewed yet – then ignore the updates. You will only have a decision after the interview.
