Hi Simon, submitted my DS260 on Oct 5, 2016. My CN is AF7***. Any idea about when i will receive my 2NL? Thanks
January 15, 2017 at 17:51
Email me if you are from ghana.. Am from ghana and a winner too.. [email protected]
January 8, 2017 at 22:43
Hey Simon! Clarifying question: I have submitted my DS260 already, will I only receive a 2NL after my case number becomes current?
I’m OC with a case number in the low 1XXX, currently in the U.S. on an H-1B and looking to do AOS.
January 9, 2017 at 01:25
The process for AOS is different. The 2NL for AOS comes very soon after submission of the DS260, but it is nothing more than an acknowledgement that you intend to process via AOS. It is NOT the interview appointment.
January 9, 2017 at 03:59
If someone is a winner of the lottery dv and already lives in the United States with a type of visa, he must also fill out dl260 before soliciting adjustment of status?
January 9, 2017 at 05:46
It isn’t strictly required, but submitting it saves time later in the process.

Hi Brit
Thank you for taking your time replying to all the questions!!
I have a question regarding registering interview appointment& affidavit of support
1) can I change email address after I create account on usvisa-info to register interview date? and can I use the old email to create a new account? Coz I made a mistake
2) I made a mistake when choosing the condition that I applies on usvisa-info. This choice come before I create the account. Can I make it correct after I create the account? or should I continue with that?
3) on affidavit of support, if the sponsor is above poverty, does his job only print the paper out and fill with black ink and send directly to me? If there is other steps plz tell me in detail.
Thank you very much
January 9, 2017 at 05:45
1. I don’t know about the usvisa-info system.
2. See 1
3. He should do that and send photo ID, W2/1040 and payslips.

HI BritSimon! Thanks as always for this invaluable site.
I am an OC10XX winner and I am starting to apply for necessary documentation in anticipation for an interview around May-ish.
Just a quick questions about living overseas and needing to obtain police checks if the stay was longer than 12 months. I have lived in Japan twice before: once in 2002 from Mar to Nov and once again in 2008 from Apr to Jul. The separate stints are obviously less than 12 months, but if added together almost hit the 12 month mark. In order to avoid any visa delays, should I just apply for the Japanese police check in case? Apparently it takes around 3 months to be issued, is quite expensive to apply for and you need to attend an interview at the nearest Japanese Embassy etc., so I wanted to consult with you first to ask if you know what the policy is if you have lived in the same country at different times for less than a year each time (but around 12 months when the total duration is calculated)? Many thanks in advance for any advice you can share! Happy 2017!
January 9, 2017 at 05:40
You probably won’t be asked for the police cert, but applying for it just in case has no downside.
January 9, 2017 at 06:38
Hi Simon,
I got a 2nl for tomorrow 10th Jan. But today i got a call from embassy to change my interview date to 19th Jan. Am i need to put a email?
Is this normal to get calls like that? because i have not received any mail confirmation
January 9, 2017 at 14:37
THat can sometimes happen. If you are sure it was the embassy who called, then just attend the new interview date.
January 10, 2017 at 02:30
Thanks Simon. God bless you.
January 9, 2017 at 08:56
Hello Brit,
I am a 2017 DV winner from Sierra Leone and I have a question:
In relation to the affidavit of support, is it compulsory to take the original copy to the interview or we can just print out the copy that will be sent through an e-mail coz, sending the original copy from the US will be really expensive (DHL).
However, if the original copy is the accepted document, then I think We’ll try and get that.
Just want to know if we can save some cost as the economic situation is really hard over here.
Thanks for your help.
May God continue to bless you.
January 9, 2017 at 14:36
The CO’s have been known to insist on the original I-134.
January 9, 2017 at 11:10
Hello Mr. Simon, can you please help me with a specimen of a letter to a consular General explaining to him that i was reused due to my documents, while my documents are authentic and want them to do some verification through the institutions were the documents were received. Thanks for your assistance and corporation.
January 9, 2017 at 14:32
I don’t have such a letter because there is no appeal process. The decision is final.
January 9, 2017 at 15:48
Thank you Sir
January 9, 2017 at 12:00
Dear Brit,I have obtained foreign country police clearence certificate on 21 October and left that country on 2nd of November and it has validity for 3 month so it seems that it is expiring on 21st of January and my interview is on 2nd of February! What do you think because I did not attend that country agin will that certificate do?
January 9, 2017 at 14:30
Yes
January 9, 2017 at 13:16
Does the “name check” process starts as soon as submitting the DS260 form or is requested only by officer on interview day?
Thanks
January 9, 2017 at 14:24
Some background checks are performed after submission of the DS260. At interview the CO might order additional checks – and in that case the case is on AP for some time after interview.
January 12, 2017 at 06:57
Thanks Brit for response
based on my study there are 3 mail layers of background checking :
1- IBIS database
2- FBI fingerprint check (logically should be after interview)
3- FBI name check against lots of DBs (could be before or after interview)
for some people from some risky countries like iran , iraq there are Condor or mantis checking which is a sort of name check based on my understanding.
main question is after submitting the DS260 which type of checks apply to applicants.
Thanks again
January 12, 2017 at 06:59
We don’t know the full detail of what checks are performed and when.

Hi
Deat brit
am one of dv selecte with my 3kids and spouse and i am appointed for interview on February 7 and now I am making things ready for this interview date but i have a couples of question for your help
Q1. for dv case is affidavit of support i134 form is the exact form to fill by my sponsor or is any another to be filled by my sponsor?
Q2. my sponsor asked me how to fill this affidavit of support form and sent to me… is that possible by e-mail or any other to get the original sign on the form from them? please tell me how?
Q3. i didn’t tack the medical exam till now i decided to tack the medical exam with all my families starting from January 18 am i safe to get the result for February 7?
Q4. most ppl say the affidavit of support form is not necessary the co will not ask that form is that true?
Q5. there is a complain there is a payment raise on the dv case on what thing it is increased is that for visa requisite payment or other like on air tikit or what please help?
Q6. if they approve my visa my and my husband will go first and after a 4 or 5 month we will tack our child’s is that possible?
if so my kids age the eldest one is 6 years of age and the other two are 3 and 2 how can they go by them selves? please tell me if there is any mechanism?
very much thank you for your valuable help
God bless you
January 9, 2017 at 15:52
1. I-134
2. The form should be mailed to you (with supporting evidence of W2/1040 Payslips and photo ID).
3. That is something to ask the physician.
4. It depends on the embassy and the case. It is worth having the form just in case requested.
5. The immigrant fee was raised in December to $220. The interview view is still $330.
6. Yes. As long as all enter before the expiry date on the visa (which will be 6 months after the medical). The airlines may allow unaccompanied minors BUT with the additional immigration procedures that would not be wise – so I suggest one of you would travel back to bring the children.
January 9, 2017 at 16:35
hi dear simon,
in my birth certificate from capital city that am currently living stated place of birth only the general state(region)name.in my passport it exactly states town name where i was born. Those administrator not want to state my town name in birth certificate(they told their automated system not editable, the system only fed region names of our country). if this is threat, i can travel 300km in my birth town where there is no automation and they can give me birth certificate that can state town name.
Q1. what is yr suggestion here pls? I have interview on feb 2,
kindly requested!
January 9, 2017 at 17:27
The birth cert you have is fine.
January 9, 2017 at 17:12
Hi Simons is it wise to receive my affidavit through fax. Cuz my sponsor wants to send it through fax
January 9, 2017 at 17:27
Some embassies have insisted on having the original.
January 9, 2017 at 18:10
Hi Simon,
My wife is the selectee for the DV 2017. We are in the US so we will be going with AOS, we have submitted DS 260 a week ago and mailed 660$(fee for 2 persons opting for AOS) to DOS. I would appreciate if you could answer two questions -:
1) When we receive the 2NL will there be an interview appointment date or it will be just an confirmation for AOS?
2) With which USCIS office do we have to file the AOS for both of us?
Regards,
Sam
January 9, 2017 at 18:23
1. It is just confirmation that they understand you are doing AOS.
2. You don’t file with the local office. You file through Chicago lockbox. They then assign your case to the field office.
From your questions it is clear you don’t know what you are doing. AOS is simple if you take a couple of hours to learn. The BEST resource is the link below. Read the spreadsheet linked from the first post ion the thread. ONCE YOU HAVE STUDIED THAT, you can then ask further questions on that thread and “Sm1smom” will be your guide.

Hello my case is AF30445 precisely cameroon and I submitted my ds260 in August 2016. I wish to know if there any chance for me to receive the 2letter and proceed with interview especially as the cutoff numbwr for africa march not change am really worried a prompt reply will help
January 10, 2017 at 02:21
If you are not current you will not have an interview in march.
January 10, 2017 at 00:48
Can some be refuse a vise because of his or her name, am asking this because where I come from in African those who names are 3 or 4 have some difficulties. Because the teachers in here like to mention the name they want to sound good for them example is this name: Nicholas owusu nyamekye. The last name is my surname but on one of my set they have made it owusu nyamekye Nicholas.
But on my birth certificate it read Nicholas owuscu nyamekye.
January 10, 2017 at 02:20
The Lastname, firstname middlename format is common in some systems. Names are proven by birth certificates and passports, not educational documents.
January 15, 2017 at 17:48
I know you are from ghana.. Email me and let’s chat.. dv winner too.. [email protected]
January 10, 2017 at 00:54
Please wish to know why the cutoff number for Africa did not increase but for restricted countrie?also is it possible that the number of persons needed for africa have been selected and there will be no further cutoff numbers for Africa ?
January 10, 2017 at 02:18
It does not mean that. Don’t panic. Relax. I’ll write about it soon.
January 10, 2017 at 04:01
I am anxiously waiting on you to write on the present situation because I wish to know if am safe for future interview in april…….or not for

Hi there, i had an interview today. I was told to provide my original birth certificate which I couldn’t provide while interviewing. As, i had provided them with English translation of my birth certificate. And was adviced to submit particular document and will send my passport and also stated that to take off before 6 months. Is it a approval??
January 10, 2017 at 05:42
It is AP. Once you provide your documents they will most likely approve your case.

January 10, 2017 at 05:28

Thank You So Much Sir
January 10, 2017 at 07:55
Hello BritSimon,
I have read your FAQ on DV2017 basics. Unfortunately for us, I was not aware that it would take so much time to process the DS-260 online application, otherwise I would have applied much earlier. So my questions are:
1. As I have an EU DV # 20xxx, and just applied couple of days ago, how much time do you think it will take the KCC to process?
2. Is there a chance that KCC does not process in time and that we do not get a slot for the embassy interview?
Thanks for your time and have a good day.
January 10, 2017 at 13:47
1. I don’t know, perhaps around 3 months.
2. No.
January 10, 2017 at 14:26
Thanks for the quick reply. Have a good day!
January 10, 2017 at 07:59

January 10, 2017 at 13:44
I think you have asked me this question MANY times, and that you will know for sure in about 2 weeks.
January 10, 2017 at 10:12
I also check the link that you give us and my case number show at NVC,is that a good sign also.please tell me.

Hello sir
I attended my interview today and the CO approved my case and gave me a form on when to pick up my visa but i checked my status on CEAC it shows AP. is the anything wrong and why is it showing AP when the CO has approved my case?
January 10, 2017 at 14:54
Cases often show AP for a short period (a day or two) just before the status becomes issued.
January 10, 2017 at 15:25
Please, Mr Brit i check on CEAC and my case is showing AT NVC and I submitted my DS 260 form on 20th June,2016 and unlock it four times. my CN is 2017AF377* please do you think i can get my 2NL this month.

I have submitted my DS260 application in May 2016 and again I edited my DS260 application and submitted it in December 2016. My case is higher. I just want to know which date would they consider for sending me the second letter. Is it the May or the December?

January 10, 2017 at 17:31

January 10, 2017 at 18:30
No
January 10, 2017 at 17:57
Mr. Simon! You are amazingly helpful. I would like to ask a question. My case is AF000086** , but I could submit DS 260 in NOVEMBER When can I expect interview?

Hi, I used to live in Germany from 1987 to 1993 and in the US from 1997 to 2000 after the age of 16. Do I need to provide the Police certificate from both of these countries?
Thanks!
Charles
January 10, 2017 at 18:30
Germany yes, not the USA.
January 10, 2017 at 19:43
Hello Brit
I attended my interview at the US Embassy in Ghana today and the CO was very harsh on me
He refused to issue me visa because during the lottery registration I entered my given name which is Israel as Isreal and that he gave me a form which he only indicated 221g on it
I wrote to kcc when feeling the DS260 about the situation and they replied me to feel the DS260 with the correct spelling of the name and that they will review it
But the CO did not listen to me for any explanation
Pls for him indicating only 221g on the form, do I still have any chance
Tanx
January 10, 2017 at 19:49
A 221(g) refusal is actually AP (Administrative Processing). So the CO is delaying the decision – presumably to order some additional checks. That means there is still some chance.
January 10, 2017 at 20:10
Ok
Tanx
Will be praying for being called back again
January 10, 2017 at 20:32
Hi Brit.
In filling form I 134 .
1.Is it one for family of 5 or for each derivatives?
Thank you.

January 10, 2017 at 21:17
Should my sponsor be a citizen?
January 10, 2017 at 22:19
Resident Citizen or LPR.
January 10, 2017 at 21:17
Hi dear Simon,
Some people say that they have seen the cut_off number for march for Africa as 33100 for a short period of time(about 5 mins) and then turned back to 28700. Can this be true or just an error?
January 10, 2017 at 22:18
I am skeptical about that, but it doesn’t matter in any case. The number is published.
January 10, 2017 at 22:28
do think next visa bulletin will go up or still the same due to the backlog of ds260 forms?
January 10, 2017 at 22:41
I would expect some increase.
January 10, 2017 at 21:48
Pls help me. I haven’t received my 2NL but my cousin sent my affidavit in December. I filled in my form Oct. 3 and my CN is AF16***. Will this be a problem for me.
January 10, 2017 at 22:16
Please don’t repeat questions without checking to see if I have already answered your earlier question on the same subject.

January 11, 2017 at 00:07
Hi Brit
This morning our interview took place at the US Embassy of Dakar and the visa was refused my wife and me.
First came to the first wicket we found a metis woman who welcomed us and chatted with my wife who is the Principal applicant in English and enjoyed my wife after seeing her grades from the Baccalaureate.
We paid the fees, then a spanish consul called us for the interview, after swearing to tell the truth, she asked my wife when we met and my wife replied. Then she asked if we have photos my wife answered yes and then she handed him the pictures. At the time she gave us a refusal paper under section 212 (5) (a) and told us that we are not eligible for visa diversity.
I asked her why but she refused to answer.
My sister in New York wants us to go and see the Eligibility Review Unit for that. What do you say ??
We married on February 14, 2016
And all papers were complete and athentic
January 11, 2017 at 01:12
Normally they provide the refusal reason on the refusal reason.
It’s hard for me to comment about the refusal since I know so little, but in general, there is no appeal process. The Eligibility Review Unit is involved when eligibility cannot be decided. In your case it WAS decided. It sounds like they were not convinced the marriage was genuine – but that would be odd since the wedding was before the results were released.
January 11, 2017 at 11:25
OK thank’s
We are trying to call the Embassy cause the refusal under section 212 (5) (a) is not normaly applicable to us.
January 11, 2017 at 13:32
212 (5) (a) is a normal refusal type for DV cases.
January 11, 2017 at 04:04
hello simon,
please help me here, last time i heard some body talk about the $220 immigration fee, when do we pay this,is it after reaching u.s.a,??is it immediately same day after passing the interview??
January 11, 2017 at 05:30
You pay that just before, or just after arriving in the USA.
January 11, 2017 at 11:06
Does the meana of communication is only English during interview?
Thank you.
January 11, 2017 at 13:38
English or local official language
January 11, 2017 at 11:57
Hi Simon,
I’m hoping you can help me out on a couple of things…
Firstly and least importantly – do New Zealand and Australia have their own allocation of visas or is there just a set number of cases for Oceania and the draw is at random? Reason I ask is one of my friends from NZ thinks that we are not in the same ‘pool’ as it were, so therefore if an Aussie and a Kiwi enter, they’re not in competition with one another – I hope this makes sense?
Secondly, I am now unfortunately going through a divorce and with 2 deaths in the family I’m also having to go back to Aus from the UK resulting in my needing to get a reentry permit to the states (i-131) and was wondering if you have any knowledge you can impart with that form? Technically I guess I could keep flying back every 6-12 months as to keep my green-card valid, but I want to do the right thing and genuinely plan on moving to the states, it’s just that life has happened in between. To confirm, I won the 2016 DV and have the physical green card, plus SS number. I went over in May last year and plan to go again at the end of the month to move my stuff in to the house.
Cheers,
Nicky.
January 11, 2017 at 13:31
The draw is within each region, so the Aussie and a Kiwi are in competition with each other, but are not in competition with someone in EU.
The I-131 is self explanatory. File it while you are in the USA and stay in the USA until you have the biometrics appointment. You can then leave. That implies you will be in the USA for a few weeks on that trip.
January 12, 2017 at 00:43
Thanks, Simon – do you know roughly how long the appointment takes by chance? I was going to book a fleeting visit and then fly back to do biometrics (time off work is hard but I can do it if you think that’s the best idea?) Should I try to expedite the process, I know you can write urgent on the i-131 which may or may not make an actual difference. Thanks again for your help – so sorry for the questions, tried to call the Embassy here in London but as you are no doubt aware they’re kind of useless!
January 12, 2017 at 02:55
The appointment for biometrics is (as I understand it) about 5 or 6 weeks after filing). But your mileage may vary!
January 11, 2017 at 13:08
Hi Brit 1)someone who played with his son edv in 2010 but didnt won,his details will remain to the data or it’ll not . And if he played again in 2016 without a son is it necessary gona be ask about that son to the interview ? 2)affidavid of support form i-134 filed +
(1040/W2/Payslips)
plus photo ID (passport) or is just 1040+W2+payslips and photo ID (passport)
3)Someone who were refused a visa of non immigrant would be questionned about the mariage that he mentionned 10 years later even this mariage was fake ,koz he maried now legally, while he didnt put this fake mariage 10 years ago in case to increase chance of having a visa,if they ask him wht should he say to the co according to your experience.
4)If the refused someone a non immigrant visa result of eg -lack of ties to come back home or -not legal or official paper of mariage or anouth proof ob being maried ,Can it affect an immigrant visa to say in a non immigrant visa he say he was maried even they refused him a non immigrant visa to accept that mariage for truth after the denial of 10 years ago of a non immigrant visa ?
January 11, 2017 at 13:25
1. Yes they will probably have that data.
2. I-134 and whatever supporting documents is appropriate.
3. Wow you know some people that really don’t understand how to tell the truth don’t you. Honestly, liars shouldn’t bother trying to go through the process.
4. See 3.
I’m really not interested in helping people unravel the mess they create by consistent lying…. there are honest people that deserve Green Cards that I can help.

My Birth certificate recently was destroyed after I submitted my ds260 to kcc I have now declared my birth through my bad and the authorities are have issued me an original recent dated birth certificate with my necessary details in tact
Q. can this be a ground for refusal of visa for me OR cause delay?
January 11, 2017 at 13:42
No

From the guide for CO’s about DV lottery.
“Any applicant for a DV visa who fails to establish that they possess the requisite qualifications, including a valid entry for participation in the DV program, is ineligible under INA 212(a)(5)(A)(i). ”
Not meeting the education/work experience OR an incorrect entry will all be classified under this refusal type.

Hi Brit
Concerning my case that I said the CO refused me visa and gave me a form which he only wrote 221g without indicating whether it is AP or not, what other steps should I take after this.

I wonder what requisite qualifications they need, because my husband and i ,we all have finished the university courses and we had all the proofs,it seems like they dont know how to use like comment, because if what they said was the truth it will be easy to accept but in this case its hard so hard to accept because its not a truth thing

Hello. Before the interview I need to register IV delivery address for the return of the passports. The instructions at the site http://www.ustraveldocs.com are confusing. We are 3 (myself, wife, daughter).
So we set up 3 profiles, correct ?
Then I enter the page for Registration of Document Return Address
We already have an interview date, but the file asks for a Priority date. Ignore it or insert the appointed date ?
I tried to fill in everything (including delivery address), and then pressed enter. The message was ‘Request for interview has been received’ !! No confirmation page, no barcode…. What to do ?
Thanks

You simply need to register an account. It’s for the courier. So – one account should be OK – I have never used that site.

Hi BritSimon,
My family and I are DV2017 selectees and we applied for the DS-260 so we received our Alien Registration Confirmation number. We are in the waiting period for KCC processing.
In the meantime, we would need to go to the US for short visits, my son and I can travel as we get a visa waiver, but my wife needs a tourist visa. My question is:
1. Can she apply for the non-immigrant tourist visa altough she was issued an Alien Registration number?
Thanks for your time.

I need to clarify what you mean by you received your Alien Registration Confirmation number. Do you mean you had an interview and were approved and were issued with a visa? If so, your next entry to the USA does not require a visa.
Your comment that you are waiting for KCC processing doesn’t make sense *IF* you have indeed received your Alien Registration number.

I might be confused with some of the terminology, we applied online to the DS-260 and got an Alien Registration Application Confirmation Number, so we are still waiting for KCC processing and we have not yet been notified for interview.

Maybe to clarify or rephrase, we are waiting for KCC processing and did not do the interview, in the meantime can my wife apply for a non-immigrant tourist visa?

Yes, but the application might be refused as you shown “immigrant intent”.

That should not affect your process, but if it is a mistake, get it corrected.
