The CEAC system has been updated with the case data. Interestingly this was made available at the exactly the same date as last year, and the year before.
This confirms my suspicion that there is a logic switch to only make the 2017 data available from 2017 (in pseudo code, show DV year data where year <= year extracted from sysdate). This is really BIZARRE programming – and as I have stated before the US government really needs some help on their IT side!!!
Anyway – a recap for those that are not aware of what the CEAC data is. CEAC is a government database/web page that allows people to enter their case number and get some basic status information. The site can be access at this link and you can enter the case number without leading zeros. So – if your number is 2017AF00012345, you would enter that as 2017AF12345. If you enter a real case (not a “hole”) a window pops up with some basic case status information. From this, for cases which are scheduled, we can see the number of derivatives on each case, the embassy, the original entry date, last updated date and so on.
So what do the status codes mean.
The first status for every case is “AT NVC”. You can ignore the text on the case – the case has not been passed to NVC. What this status means is that the case is in one of the following situations.
- The case is not yet current.
- The case is current, BUT the DS260 has not be submitted at all, or it was submitted but not processed yet – and therefore not scheduled.
- The case is current, the form is processed, but it is waiting to be scheduled (typically because the cases have not yet been sent to the embassies yet).
“In Transit”
This status is shown for a brief period when KCC has scheduled the interview, and transferred the case to the embassy. However, the embassy has not yet updated CEAC to acknowledge they have received the case.
“READY”
This is the next status after in transit. It means the case has arrived at the embassy for interview. Sometimes a case will continue to show ready even after the interview.
“Issued”
Pretty obviously – this is the status we all want to see! The interview took place, was successful and the visa has been approved/issued.
“Refused”
This is the status no one wants to see, meaning the interview took place and the selectee was denied. A derivative can be refused, while the principal is approved. However, if the principal is refused – all the derivatives are refused also – even if the embassy fails to update CEAC.
“Administrative Processing”
This is when someone did not have all the documents at the interview OR some additional checks are needed before the case can be adjudicated. AP can last a few days or several months. The status updates during that time are meaningless.
Derivative number.
For cases that are scheduled we can see the related derivative numbers. Case 01 is the principal and derivatives are case 02, 03 and so on.

I had applied for my 6 yo kid for B2 Visa on 16 October. I have valid B2 with 10years and my husband has L1 which is valid and he is currently in USA. Case was created on 17 October as per ceac tracker. But from 23 October it says application received status. Today it showed change in last updated date but no change in status. How long will it take from here. Today is 8th business day from submission.

Good afternoon,
I got married an American citizen since October 2015, I had my first interview on March 2018, the OC asked me to send him our WhatsApp and messenger’s call and messages. I did. After 1 week I received a letter from the embassy asking me to come to the embassy for another interview with my husband together (Stokes interview). We did on June . We we’re interviewed separately and all answers were the same except one. A male said to my husband to confirm that our marriage is a fraud. It isn’t. We got married for love. After the interview, he said to me that I won’t go no where because he thought my divorce wasn’t real. He gave me back my passport and Said he will contact me after 2 weeks. Ever since we don’t have any answers. My husband wrote to them on July and they requested the copy of my passport and after that no answers. Please bhelp me

June 11, 2018 at 22:52
Hi Brit!my case was under process. After 60 days, I sent a message to my us.consulate and i asked them that my wife is pregnant then later they called me to bring our passport and pregnancy paper. Now it is 5 weeks after that and still didn’t get any answer and my wife has less than 2 weeks for make my baby ,and they knew that from my last call for them last week. What is your suggestions for my case just wait until get a call for them and my wife makes baby here. I’m so confused. I want my baby born there.
Thanks bro
June 11, 2018 at 23:24
Are you telling me your wife is due in the next 2 weeks? In that case you absolutely CANNOT get on a plane at this time!
Have the baby at home in a healthcare system you know. When the child is born, it is easy to process the GC for the child, and the child will automatically get citizenship when you do.
June 12, 2018 at 00:19
So you suggest only wait without bothering them with my emails about upcoming baby.
May 30, 2018 at 13:37
Dear Simon;
Looking at the ceac data; there are two different dates which I want to know their meaning:
The submit date and the satus date
Thank you for your time and consideration
May 30, 2018 at 19:42
Submit date is the date of the entry into the lottery.
Status date is the last update to the case (which could be for ANY reason).

Hello, yesterday my immigration visa status changed from AP to READY and back to AP, on the same day. Today it is still on AP. What does that mean?
Thanks!
May 8, 2018 at 13:56
More waiting.
May 1, 2018 at 14:19
Hello Brit, two questions:
1.how long does it takes for your CASE STATUS to change from READY to Approve?
2. which case number you think they are going to stop this Year for Africa?
Awaiting for comment Sir.
May 1, 2018 at 14:24
1. It varies case by case.
2. I don’t know.

March 26, 2018 at 07:00
hi mr simon my interview was on 18 march and my case is Administrative Processing
and There are a lot of updates on my case last updated is on 19 . 20 .22 .25
what that means ?????
and administrative processing means refusal ??
Thank you mr simon 😀 😀
March 26, 2018 at 17:53
The updates don’t mean anything as far as we can tell – so don’t read meaning into the updates.
AP means they are doing additional checks. The outcome is not decided.
March 27, 2018 at 06:15
Thank you Mr Simon 😀 😀
October 22, 2018 at 12:54

Hello Brit,
You talk about “In Transit” and “READY” status but mine does not show any of them of the website.
It just stays that my application is “COMPLETED” and that my “case is currently in Paris” (my case is current).
Can you please confirm I do not have to pay a fee to get my interview date / receive my 2NL?
Thanks a lot

Hello Simon,
Thanks for your precious help.
While checking my status (DV submitted in Dec. 2017, Case Number 2018EU145XX), the “At NVC” message appeared. I did read your article meaning it is perfectly fine as my number is not current yet, but the message also said “Please follow the instructions you received from the National Visa Center (NVC) that list the six steps you must take before NVC can schedule your visa interview appointment.” But I did not receive any email or instruction.
My question is: the only thing I have to do is wait until I receive the email? Nothing to pay or to submit?
The message is indeed confusing.
Thanks a lot for your help
Camille

When an immigrant Visa is refused but your status dates still updating what does that mean and what do I do after refusal
December 27, 2017 at 01:26
If it is a 221(g) refusal, then follow their instructions, otherwise, it is time to think about something else.
December 30, 2017 at 11:08
If it’s refused and they haven’t email or call me plus they keep my passport and documents over two weeks when I called the NVC they said it’s pending processing what must I do

Question is:when i want to check my status and i put my case number it says
invalid immigrant visa case number even i removed the four zeros
please what is the solution
October 18, 2017 at 13:35
2018 cases are not loaded in the CEAC system yet. You cannot check the status therefore until January 1.
November 8, 2017 at 12:36
Dear Britsimon, I got approved at my interview a week ago and as you explained here, CEAC systems won’t be updated till January. Now my question is: Does that mean in case I got my passport within 2 weeks, I won’t be able to travel to US before January 2018?
I know it seems like a weird question, but it really worries me
November 8, 2017 at 14:31
No – the CEAC system doesn’t affect your case. You can enter the USA as soon as you have the visa.
October 18, 2017 at 10:16
Hi I am Samuel from Liberia and 2017 dv winner and had my interview may and was put on AP and my case show ready since August 25 but I have not gotten any call from the embassy

You won’t get the visa. DV2017 is over. In due course the embassy will return your passport.
October 9, 2017 at 15:43

My husband shifted in new apartment how can I change address after interview and my case is in AP. It’s suitable time for changing address or waiting for visa?

Wait for the visa
March 1, 2018 at 14:52
Helo ,can you guide me please
March 1, 2018 at 14:54
Your case was a 2017 case. It seems like your AP was never resolved, and you cannot get a Green Card from that DV lottery win. There was a deadline. No DV2017 case can be approved after September 30, 2017.
October 5, 2017 at 17:25
Hi, I applied for Non Immigrant visa for USA, Lady said i provisionally approving your visa but we are putting in AP. September 23, 2017 at 05:35
Hi BritSimon,
I was email to Embassy after completeing 60 days. US Embassy reply me.
Your immigrant visa case has been refused under INA Section 221(g) for administrative processing, an integral part of the visa adjudication and issuance process that can neither be expedited nor waived. Unfortunately, it is difficult to predict the amount of time the processing will take and timing varies based on the individual circumstances of each case. The visa application will be reconsidered when administrative processing is complete.
September 23, 2017 at 14:05
That just means AP is not finished.

Hello Sir,
My case is currently under AP and my employer’s attorney has submitted(emailed) the documents on my behalf. I have the following questions.
1. The attorney misspelled the case ID on the email subject and does not want to resubmit the email again thinking it may restart the process. WIll that be an issue?
2. What is the frequency of the case update date in the CEAC website? My documents were submitted on Aug 2 and there has been no updates yet.
Thanks in Advance.

HELLO sir how r you i have one question about CEAC my interview was june 8 at addis abeba and the co told me that my visa has been approved but now when i check my status today it answers invalid case number last night it was on AP is that bad
June 13, 2017 at 16:17
No. It’s normal. It’s described in the FAQ, which you are welcome to read.
June 1, 2017 at 11:28
I’d like to share a little problem I had. In my first entry I didn’t include my son because the rule says I don’t have to as he’s already an american citizen. When I unlock the ds260 form, I included him as he also has my non us citizenship and didn’t want to get in trouble in case their background checks said he’s only european and disqualified me for omitting him in the form. When I received the appointment letter he was included as an applicAnt so I emailed the consulate because he shouldn’t need to apply. They answered “no problem, we’ll take him off the list once you come”. Upon the interview, they wanted to disqualify me but then I mentioned the rule that I could either include him or not with no consequence. Thankfully I had a document proving he’s American (his CRBA). If anyone has a similar situation, either include him or not but don’t exclude and then include him like I did. anyway bring the crba and a photocopy. My visa was approved but now fallen into AP but I read it’s normal.
June 1, 2017 at 12:37
It seems very obvious that you would have needed to show proof of his US citizenship.
June 1, 2017 at 14:37
Thanks Simon. I believe that when they say that I could either include or omit his name, they should add that I have to bring proof of his citizenship. I had it with me by chance since I am no longer with his mom 🙂
June 1, 2017 at 14:51
Well OK – but if you think about it, you are required to show proof of everything else (birth certs, passports and so on) – so again – this *really* should not need an instruction.
June 1, 2017 at 15:39
Fair enough. This is the first time in months that a comment of mine goes through so I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate you on the amazing job you’re doing. Your website was very useful to understand when I would have had my interview vs CN. My case just went from ap to issued. Thanks, mate
June 1, 2017 at 17:30
Glad the site helped. Well done for not freaking out when you saw AP after the interview!
May 24, 2017 at 09:36
Hello Brother how are you . I thank you for all your assistance in providing us with the rightful information. I want to know y is it that my wife case is put on AP while mine is Ready and we did our interview already and the lady told us that our is ok and there is no problem with us , but we have to wait for 2 to three weeks they will contact us to come and drop our visa. I won single but later got married in December 26 2015 and so because of the opportunity i added my wife , ,
I really want to know while is it that i am on Ready is my wife is on AP?
May 24, 2017 at 13:42
I can’t speculate on that. Just be patient.
May 18, 2017 at 19:44
Hello i check my case status online i saw “at NVC ” what does that mean , thanks
May 18, 2017 at 19:46
It means you e is not yet scheduled for interview.
April 25, 2017 at 21:47
Hi Brit, I just had the interview and it was approved. But in CEAC I appear like “AP”, I think I read in your comments that sometime is normal, a few day after, the case will change to Issued. Is that correct? And why this happend?
Regards
April 26, 2017 at 01:41
It is normal for AP to show briefly (a day or two) after approval.
April 13, 2017 at 09:16
Brit, I had my interview and my visa has been approved 🙂 But I would like to share one strange thing that happened. I am not sure someone else has experienced it or not or you are aware of such cases or not but I am sharing the experience:
I was selected as single and I got married on Dec and got 2nd letter on March for April interview. I had unlocked added my marital status and also locked the ds260 but later I received the 2nd letter on my name only(my husband’s name wasn’t mentioned) . I had seen in ur article that the name of ur husband isn’t that necc there are some cases that 2nd letter doesn’t include the name of the beneficiaries. So i didn’t stress out on it.
Later I went to interview along with my husband and the guard while looking at the list of interview list didn’t find my husband’s name still I thought might be some error and didn’t stress. But at our document submission time right before the interview the officer there told us that my ds260 doesn’t seem to have updated my marital status and it does n;t seem we unlocked and added our marital status. But we had, so we show him our ds 260 confirmation bar code still he said there is no update on ds260 and it is still showing single. But later he took our bar code submissions. Although later they didn’t take out the topic at the interview and granted us the visa.
But we felt so strange, how is that possible? Have you heard such cases before Brit?
April 13, 2017 at 13:41
Not that strange – they don’t know what they are doing sometimes.
