Hello we recently learned that there was a second draw of the DV2017, my mom came out pre-selected with the case number 2017SA0000156X
I wanted to know if it’s too late to start the process (filling the DS-260) ??? Thank you.

Hi there!
Thank you so much for your blog. It is actually very hard to find the right info regarding the DV system. My girlfriend has been selected with a case number around 14000. We are currently looking into the different options moving forward and your help would be much appreciated!
1. Either we get married before the interview at the embassy.
a. How long can she wait – and is there a risk to do so – before submitting the DS-260 form so that we can save some precious time?
b. If she submits it in September, when can we expect an interview knowing that her case number is around 14000? Do KCC schedule the interviews based on the case number only or does it depend on the submission date as well?
c. Also, it is my understanding that one has 1 year from his/her medical examination to move to the US permanently – and not just visiting the US to get the temporary visa stamped. Is this correct?
2. Either she completes the process for herself only in order to get the Green Card and I then try to go to the US on a working visa – I am currently working for a global company – or by marrying her. What would be your advice based on your experience?
Many thanks for your help.
May 9, 2017 at 17:16
1a. Don’t focus on the date of interview – focus on the best result. The best result is achieved by marrying now, and submitting as married. You can wait a few months before submitting – visas will not run out before September 2018 for case numbers that are current.
1b. I don’t know exactly – but as I said – it doesn’t matter. Interviews are based on case numbers for cases that have submitted their DS260s and have been processed. Processing will take about 4 months – so you would have a spring 2018 interview ROUGHLY.
1c. You have 6 months after the medical for the first activation trip. Subsequent absences from the USA are 1 year MAX, but less than 6 months is better.
2. That would be an idiotic decision. It will take 2 years and more complication that way to get your GC later.
When quoting your case number always include the YEAR and REGION.
May 10, 2017 at 09:47
Many thanks for your prompt reply.
Sorry about the case number – I am talking about FRANCE for the DV-2018 draw and the case number is around 14000+. Based on your reply, here’s how this would happen:
– September 2017: Submission of the DS-260 form for her only (it is very unlikely that we will manage to get married before the submission). So technically, there’s no real deadline to submit the DS-260 form but submitting it after September 2017 might be a bit risky, correct?
– After September 2017 and before the interview: marriage and update on our status sent to KCC
– Spring 2018 (From March 20 to June 21): Medical & Interview
– Fall 2018 (September 20 to December 21): Deadline for first activation trip
– Spring 2019 (March 20 to June 21): Recommended deadline to move to the US
– Fall 2019 (September 20 to December 21): Final deadline to move permanently to the US
Your input on the above timeline would be really helpful.
Thanks!
May 10, 2017 at 14:01
You can do all that, yes.
May 9, 2017 at 14:22
Dear Simon. Am a LPR but my mum was denied a visitor’s visa. She’s an old woman and has never had a formal job. During her interview she was asked how much she earned! Bottom line, she was denied a visa. Is it worth it to petition?
May 9, 2017 at 16:19
I don’t advise on cases other than DV lottery.

Hello Brit,
Is it possible that some US Embassies do not accept the form I-134 at all but they only accept financial means like savings, stocks, bonds? Or is it a law that I-134 must be accepted? Because when i contacted them to ask if is it okay for me that my sponsor will fill out I-134 form, they replied: You need to show sufficient funds / proof of financial means (savings, stocks, bonds). No I-134 is needed and no form must be filled out. I am confused, because i just graduated last year and i dont have enough savings like 10000 $ for example.
Thank you.
May 9, 2017 at 14:14
THe I-134 is accepted at all embassies.
May 9, 2017 at 13:04
Dear, Mr. Simon. I have been selected for DV 2018. My case number is EU 5XXX. I’m going to get married in middle of June 2017, so I can probably submit DS 260 by end of June. My case number seems to be low, would it be better to submit DS 260 now and add my wife later or wait till end of June ? I would like to have interview as soon as possible. How long it takes to get the visa after the interview? Thank you.
May 9, 2017 at 13:22
The fastest possible interview would be to submit now and add your spouse as soon as you are married. That would lead to an October or November interview.
May 9, 2017 at 13:01
I lost my confirmation number, how do I retrieve it?
May 9, 2017 at 13:23

Hi Mr. Simon. I try asking you concerning my situation yesterday but did not get any personal response to my question. I have a situation where my date of birth and education level was mistaken. Instead of may 2, 1995 it was may 2, 2000 and instead of high school diploma it was vocational certificate. can this mistake be rectified and still attached my spouse?
May 9, 2017 at 13:27

hi, i just found out that there was a mistake on my DOB that is on my high school result, but all other information on my result is correct, the mistake was done by my school. what should i do when my interview is a month away. all my other documents have my original date of birth.
May 9, 2017 at 13:34
THe only problem is if the CO believes the education document is not yours. So be prepared to show other proof of attendance at that school.
May 9, 2017 at 09:34
Hello Simon!
I have finished the general high school. What should I exactly write at ‘Course of study’ because some say General, Academic, High School…
And should we include the ‘nine-year elementary school’ in the number of educational institutions because I am not crystal clear?
Thanks, Simon! 🙂
May 9, 2017 at 14:00
General.
No need to include elementary.
May 9, 2017 at 14:12
Thanks! 🙂

Hello mr. Britsimon
I am a winer of Dv 2018, and i am facing a serious issue in the part of security questions.
I were studying in malaysia so at the final year and i were doing my final semester at that time; the college refused to give me a full year visa and my visa about to expire one month later, the officer at the student affairs said i will get a special pass visa for two months, i have paid the money and everthing, upon leaving the country i explained to counter officer and i have not been arrested.
I had the chance to call my country embassy they have solved the issue but cancelled my passport and banned for 3 years, so i travelled home with “travel document”
What do you think ? Will this case cause me rejection?
May 9, 2017 at 14:05
This is the SECOND time you repeated the question. Don’t do that!
May 9, 2017 at 08:06
Hello, thank you in advance for your help. My husband won with the DV 2018 lottery, but we are worried that we will not be approved for a visa due to bad credit history. 8 years ago my husband and I were students in the USA and were in very bad financial position. Our credit history is not good and in addition, my husband had to file for bankruptcy in October 2009. We have been back to our home country since 2010 and have not traveled to the US since. Now he won a green card and we are worried that he will get his visa rejected due to this bankruptcy and bad credit from the time he was in the USA. Could you please advise us if this could be the case?
May 9, 2017 at 14:07
No it won’t affect the DV process
May 9, 2017 at 14:16
Thank you, you gave us hope.
May 11, 2017 at 09:18
Hi Brits,in the DV form in the level of education,i selected ”some university degree courses” even though i have a high school certificate but not strong enough.I pursued a diploma in Network Engineering and CCNA,CCNP(Routing)and Fiber Optics technician courses in some universities in my country.(Ghana)These programs are offered in the universities.Do you think it will be a problem at the interview.I am a Systems Administrator at a community bank for the past 8 years.I believe my work experience is an advantage too??
May 11, 2017 at 13:45
The courses don’t help. They want to see education OR verified work experience at the right level. Ghana are strict – so google britsimon work experience and prepare well.
May 9, 2017 at 07:11
If I submit my DS260 now (with the assumption my interview is next year)- do I need to update the DS-260 before the interview to include US travel between DS-290 submission and US trips?
May 9, 2017 at 14:08
Not really – you can if you want.
May 9, 2017 at 02:49
Hello!
1.We need affidavict of support i134. We are a family selected for dv lottery 2018. Do we need i134 or any other documents (affadavict of support)?
2.How many days affadavict of support is valid?
3.Who want to submit affidavict of support to the embassy?
4. Should a copy of affadavict of support send to the embassy by the sponsor? (Using a mail or dhl)
5. Can I send affadavict of support to the embassy before the getting an interview date?
May 9, 2017 at 04:38
1. I-134, plus 1040/W2/Payslips/Photo ID
2. You get it a month or two before your interview.
3. You take it to the interview and present it *IF* asked.
4. No – see 3
5. No see 3.

Thank you very much giving these instructions…… thanks…….

Hi mr simon i was interviewed and the interviewer said to me congratulation after that he gave me a letter which was written on your visa is approved but we can not gruante how long it takes to print, and also he told me to follow up the issuance of the visa CEAC website.when i checked it was Administrative processing.and it was 9 days ago.what can i expect from them.can a bad news come from them?thanks
May 9, 2017 at 04:41
You just have to wait and see. There is nothing to do except that.
May 10, 2017 at 10:32
Dear brit. Aa you just replied to mr.Abdirashid as we are the same case .what about if we request the embassy to print our visas. Because we have wives and children who cant stay here more and our costs are going to finish. If we request from the embassy what is likely to happen? Thanks
May 10, 2017 at 13:53
They can’t print your visas until the AP is finished.
May 10, 2017 at 16:52
Ok thanks. Can the embassy finish the AP or there is other part involved in ?
Thanks
May 9, 2017 at 00:28
Hi Simon,
I am from Australia and in filling out the DS-260 it asks for a temporary address and address for green card which I don’t know as I am unsure of where I will be living even temporarily as it will be based on where I secure work.
I do not know anyone in America well enough to ask that I put their address down (emailed the KCCC and their only advice was to put down a temporary address that I can change later) do you have any advice on what I could put in this section to move forward with the form?
Thank you for your help.
May 9, 2017 at 04:46
You can have a temporary address there for now, but you need a proper residential address of someone you can trust to receive your GC later. You must update that at the interview OR the last chance is the POE (arrival airport).
May 9, 2017 at 06:08
Thank you for the prompt reply. Greatly appreciated. Do you know if a temporary address could be a hotel or similar? I will definitely know where I am headed by the time I get to POE.
May 9, 2017 at 14:10
You can do that, yes
May 8, 2017 at 23:50
Hi Brit, per your excel sheet (https://britsimonsays.com/historical-visa-bulletin-numbers/), the last cell stating “Visas issued”, is that the total number of visas issued AFTER the September cut off date or in total for the region SA for the fiscal year?
May 9, 2017 at 00:03
Total for the year.
May 8, 2017 at 22:58
Dear Simon
My brother is selected for the DV 2018 but he as a B1/B2 for ten year
Can this visa create some conflict at the interview .
May 8, 2017 at 23:47
No
May 9, 2017 at 00:06
Hello, dear simon. I’m living in Usa for three years, i came with eork and travel and I decided to continue my studies here, then I applied for emigration.
I’m applying every year for dv lottery, but I haven’t been selected, does anything mean that I stayed to not been selected, andif one day I’m going to be selected should I go back to my country, or can I do the interview here.
Thank you very much all the best to you, you are so helpful for all of us.
May 9, 2017 at 04:46
You cannot make a plan around the lottery. Chances of selection are very small – about once every 100 years.
May 8, 2017 at 21:45
Hi Simon,
My number has already come up in the bulletin (for the month of May) but haven’t been able to schedule my appointment because we are currently experiencing political unrest and there have been protests and riots everyday for more than a month in my country; this has made it impossible for me to get the required documents legalized. I am worried that I will passed on for not scheduling my appointment at the US Embassy.
My question is: is it possible that I loose my opportunity if I don’t schedule my appointment at the Embassy X time after my number comes up on the bulletin? Is there a specific deadline that I should be aware of?
Thanks,
Carolina.
May 8, 2017 at 23:53
You don’t schedule it yourself – KCC set the schedule for you.
May 8, 2017 at 21:35
Hello Mr Brit, I went for the interview today with my wife who is the PA but unfortunately for us we were denied by the consul in charge which stated that “we are married for immigration purpose” but it not true. I met my wife in 2014 and we got married in 2016 the only problem we had was that her parents have gave up on her and before we got married my family went to her family twice and they were turned down and said they don’t have any thing to do with her, reason been is because they want her to get married to this old man who already have two wives and she refused and ran away from home, for her parents she went against there tradition and belief,so for that reason she was not theirs ,so with the consent of her guardians our marriage was blessed and we got married without them. Unfortunately, today the consul asked few questions which we answered correctly; like what did my wife cook last night?
If we have a trip together?
What I do in my free time? And what job I do?And which all were answered by my wife before i was called to confirmed and which I did. The question that brought about our deniers was, if both of our parents attended our wedding? My wife said “No”, her parent didn’t attend; and I said “Yes” my parents did attend and wish was all true. He argue that is not possible for a lady who is a Muslim by religion to get marry to a Christian man without her parents being present. I said is true but some how her parents refused because they didn’t favor our marriage. So now, it may not be about the Visa issue but the stain that; ‘we got marry for immigration purpose’. which is not true. My Question here is it possible for us to have been denied a visa because of her parents not attending our wedding?
Question 2, is it possible writing the Embassy for an appointment to clarify our case?
May 8, 2017 at 23:56
1. It is possible to deny a case for suspicion of fraudulent marriage
2. It is possible to write to them, but that does not mean they have to let you plead your case. There is no appeal process.
May 10, 2017 at 16:47
I told my Wife that she should write the American Embassy Consular Section telling them for wish we were denied. The Consul wrote Section 212(a)(5) telling us we were denied because we got Marry for Immigration Purposes. This really got to me like an insult to our marriage. We got married February 20, 2016 before the DV result came out. The DV process didn’t had anything to do with us being marry. I take this issue as an allegation and scam towards our status wish have been put into their data base already. It may cause a great problem for us on our traveling record to the USA. Please let me know what you think because we are wanting whatever way to have them schedule an interview for us to defend our case to remove such scam from our record.
May 10, 2017 at 19:16
Hi Brit, am still awaiting you advice towards this issue about my wife and I been denied. Pls read my first reply to you. Andy
May 10, 2017 at 20:13
I already answered. There is no formal appeal process. You can contact them again – but there is no way to force them to reconsider your case. So – be polite with them – and hope they reconsider. If they don’t there is nothing you can do.
May 16, 2017 at 12:29
hi we were also denied today based on marriage issues we are so frustrated what did you do next did they reconsider
May 8, 2017 at 21:23
I was in Uganda for two years for study master program. So is it compulsory to mention these two years? Also my friends says you have to get police clearness letter from Uganda and now I am in Somalia so is it true that clearness letter?
May 8, 2017 at 23:57
You have to tell the truth.
Yes you need police certs from Uganda in that case.
May 9, 2017 at 13:45
But now I am in Somalia, to get that certificate police I have go Uganda and it another cost for ticket, so is there another option? Second can I update my education status DS-260 because of my first entry I choose high school degree certificate, because of it was the only certificate that I have and Bachelor was lost but I apply again and the process has finished now I have my bachelor and my master so can I update education status DS-260? What are the other document that I need can you list them?
May 9, 2017 at 14:13
The official instructions list the documents and link to reciprocity pages for each country to advise about how to obtain police certificates by mail. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!

Thanks for previous reply, Brit. One more question though.
If I’m a citizen of two countries – Armenia and Greece ( Greek citizenship was tranferred to me automatically as my mother became a citizen of Greece ), can this affect my Green Card process ?

No
May 8, 2017 at 19:46
In DS-260 form there is this question:in which occupation do you intend to work in the U.S?
I am currently university student, finishing my 1st year accounting and management in University of Djibouti. I study it on a scholarship. I have 2 years experience in English teaching (as part-time), have TOEFL certificate; 580 score. have 3 online courses certificates, one in customer services and the other in management and leadership. also another diploma in first aid from Djibouti Red crescent society.
How should I answer that question?
May 8, 2017 at 20:27
Anything you thin k is a truthful answer.

Hi Britsimon,
I lost my confirmation number. Ive been trying to get my application number back by clicking ‘forgot application nb” and for days it has been saying “information is invalid”. I don’t understand how the information can be invalid since my name, date of birth and email address have never changed… Is there another way to get a confirmation nb back?
May 8, 2017 at 20:28
There is no other way.
May 8, 2017 at 20:34
Why does the website keeps saying ‘information invalid” after trying everyday for a week, even if all my information is correct??
May 8, 2017 at 20:54
Because you are entering the information incorrectly. https://britsimonsays.com/dv2018-basic-questions/

Hi Simon, maybe is OT , but is related to the green card. I really would like to have your opinion ( I think you are a master expert on GC).
So , I’m Italian in us with an E2 visa valid until dec 2017 , now my husband just got a job offer from the restaurant where he is the chef ( 5stars Italian restaurant) . So all the requirements that uscis wants match what we have . Now my question is : Must I renew my E2 visa in order to have enough time to process the certificate of labor and then the AOS ?. Is this the only way ?? Thank you for your help.
May 8, 2017 at 20:29
I only advise on DV cases.

Dear Simon,
I had documents translated that are not in English.
To the interview I would bring:
1) The original in the foreign language
2) Stapled together: the translation, a copy of the original and the certification.
Do I also need copies of the translation and the certification and another copy of the original?
Thank you
May 8, 2017 at 18:45
It would not be a bad idea.

Right. It’s better to be overprepared. Thanks Simon

Hello!
1.Petitioner can’t be our sponsor?
2. Can you explain who is petitioner?
May 8, 2017 at 18:50
DV lottery cases are self petitioned. Don’t confuse petitioner with sponsor.
May 8, 2017 at 19:14
Thanks a lot…… to explaining the difference between petitioner and sponsor….
May 8, 2017 at 17:17
I saw the visa bulletin from previous years, sometimes it shows early enough “current”. Does that mean you’re already competing with everyone else? So for Asia just before reaching 6000, it’s already as current. Can they run out of visas with as low as 6000?
May 8, 2017 at 17:21
Current means enough visas for remaining cases in that year.

Dear Britsimon, my stutus is an administrative processing for 8 days after our visa was approved . During that time there was two times update since you told that updates during that is useless in one of your posts then what does the updates mean really? and what is the expectation since i was not nottified no document missing and the interview was succeasful and have approvel letter Many thanks
May 8, 2017 at 16:48
We don’t know what the updates mean – so it is useless to worry about the updates.
May 8, 2017 at 16:12
I started to fill out the DS 260 but I’m stuck at this question:
Permanent Address
” Please provide the following information on where you intend to live after arrival in the United States.”
How can I provide an address in the US if I just a few days ago found out I was selected for further processing? I might have some idea regarding the city I want to live in (even that might change) but an actual address?? Please provide me with information about this .
May 8, 2017 at 16:15
You provide the address of a friend or family member. It is for delivery of the Green Card.
May 8, 2017 at 15:38
Hello Simon,
Hope everything is going fine for you.
I wanted to ask you something related with the interview.
I finished medical day 3 received the xray, vaccination paper and doctor told me he will send the other papers at the embassy.
Day 5 i sent all the other documents sponsor papers, nvc interview letter, passport photocopy 2 photos, confirmation page at ceac, my diploma, police certificate ,military record, birth certificate, i think i sent everything they ask + some of this papers photocopies so they dont keep my originals.
My interview is 18 May Tirana, I just want to know what do i take with me as long as i sent everything they ask?
Thanks in advance
May 8, 2017 at 16:51

Hi Simon,
I hope you are ok.
Please help me if possible.
I have got the visa on October 2016 (temporary DV Visa on my passport) I entered to US and became LPR on 01st of March 2017.
According to what I have read, I have up to one year for final relocation. So I could move to the US before 1st of March without applying for a re-entry permit.
My plan is moving end of Jan 2018, so 10 months after I became LPR.
Is this possible or I need to go earlier?
I hope you can help me with some guidance.
Regards,
Lisbeth

Hi Simon I just finished my interview but I’m confused . I was given a pink slip and my passports back. I was told they will get in touch with me in a few days or more and there’s nothing o can do. They tick the box that said new passport, with a line thru it. I’m confused because our passports don’t expire for another three- five years. Can you help me to understand what’s happening? Have I been refused? Oh I might add that my husband and I were both finger printed. My twelve year old daughter wasn’t though. Please help me understand sir I’m nervous.

From what you have said – I have no idea. Was there a refusal code on the pink slip – like 221(g) or some other number?

after I filled the application (DS-260) at last they requires the KCC case number but when I give them the number that is gave for me they says; The case number you entered does not match the case number that you entered at Sign In. I tried 50 time and its the same number that I entered by , I would appreciate that if u gave me solution

Hello,
When do we get the interview date email? Does it come after 2 weeks of submitting of ds260? How about the i134 form (sponsor)
Should I(selectee) want to submit to the embassy or sponsor should submit to the embassy? My case no. is as12***. When do I want to submit my i134 form to the embassy? Can I send my documents (such as i134 and alevel results) to the embassy before getting an interview date?? Because my daughter turns 21 on this October.(family dv)

Unfortunately because your number is very high, you won’t be interviewed for at least a year from now. By then your daughter will not be able to get a DV visa with your case.

I would like to ask what should i fill in the part what work will you do in the USA because the options available do not include things like an accountant and also asking what is the best answer
May 8, 2017 at 16:58
The best answer is YOUR answer, not mine.

I live in Germany. I am selected for the 2018 lottery.
I have to qualify by the job.
My question is: If I qualify by my job I am working in since the last 16 years ( I checked o.net online) ,but originally had a vocational training in another occupation , which would not meet the reqirements. Does the Kentucky consular center look at the job I am in now and invite me for an interview or do they look at what I originally was trained in.
Second question. I have a GED diploma ( high school equivalency diploma). I heard i does not qualify?
Thank you
May 8, 2017 at 17:07
They look at the last 5 years of work experience.
GED doesn’t qualify.

Hello saimon we done interview before I give birth now I give birth befor they give the visa so what can we do
May 9, 2017 at 04:56
Your baby will be processed for a Green Card at the arrival airport. Contact the embassy and see if they will issue a travel authorization so the airline don’t object to the boarding of the baby.
May 9, 2017 at 14:51
please, Mr Brit , in my old passport there was an error committed in date of birth when I detected it swear an affidavit to make new passport early last year, my interview is on 16th may ,2017 at Accra Ghana embassy. but my High school certificate bear the correct date of birth which is now appearing on my new passport. could this lead to disqualification because cancelled an old passport.
secondly, do I need to carry the old passport with me on the day of the interview?
May 9, 2017 at 17:24
I would take the other passport – yes. Could it lead to problems? I can’t predict Ghana cases – the embassy has to apply rigid standards, and does that harshly. So – you prepare as best as you can and answer honestly. If they suspect fraud (lying in any way) they will find a reason to refuse you.
