Interviews are scheduled in month batches based on case numbers becoming current according to the visa bulletin. However, regardless of the case number being current or not, no case can be scheduled for interview if the DS260 is not processed.
Initial DS260 processing in DV2015 took around 3 months (May submissions) and as the volume increased (June & July submissions) the processing time increased (more waiting time). So – we saw delays of up to 4 or 5 months in DV2015. By the spring of 2015, that 4 or 5 month delay started to reduce – presumably as the volume of submissions decreased.
DV2016 seems to have started the same way as DV2015 – with most October interviews going to people who submitted in May. Not all cases take the same time to process, so there may be two low case number cases submitted on May 30th for example, one got in to October, one didn’t.
Now – if people need to unlock and make changes to their DS260, some changes are going to cause a delay, some won’t. The differences are pretty much common sense – but let me give some examples:-
- Adding a spouse due to marriage – probably WILL take some reprocessing for background checks on the spouse.
- Adding a newborn child – probably WON’T take some reprocessing since newborn children could not have got into trouble yet!
- Changing the address you plan to move to in the USA – probably WON’T take some reprocessing since you have no history at the US address anyway.
- Adding an address in a country that was not previously listed on your form – probably WILL take some reprocessing for background checks on you in that new country (especially true if that country is some country such as Iran where background checks are not easy).
See what I mean – pretty much common sense – right?
Now – will the reprocessing delay your case? Well if your case is not going to be current for 4 months from now anyway, then there is more than enough time for the changes (even impactful changes) to be processed. So – in that case there will be no delay at all. The reprocessing is done during a period that was a waiting period for you anyway.
If on the other hand you are about to be current and need to add a spouse, that could well cause a delay. However, as I always say, a delay for an accurate DS260 is much better than a denial for an inaccurate DS260.

May 28, 2016 at 16:53
Ok thanks a lot for your valuable information. But Its near to the end of May 30th .Does it mean if incase i unlocked again and submit after may 30th it will affect on the processing ? My case is 2017AS18*6 . Please suggest.
May 28, 2016 at 16:56
It might cause a small delay, it might not. Accuracy is more important than speed….
May 28, 2016 at 18:15
Thanks for prompt response. When can i expect the 2NL if i re-submit by June 1st week?? Does CO finds the changes made in form after unlocking again and again. If so then does CO suspects and enquiry regarding changes? Chances of visa refusal or not in this kind of cases?? wanted to be cleared once …Please Please help..Kindly requested…..

Unlocking/correcting inaccuracies doesn’t cause a risk. Having incorrect information does.

Hello Simon,
Just to inform that I had unlocked my DS-260 last week and it took 2 working days to get it unloked.
I also call after one day ( I am not very patient ) and they told me that it takes 4 working days max to get it unlocked.
Best regards.
September 7, 2016 at 00:26
Based on experience I can say this:
Sometimes it takes 1 day – sometimes it takes 2 weeks.
Thanks for letting me know your particular experience though.
September 7, 2016 at 00:45
They might have they average 4 days ( The line was terrible) as they also add to call back after 4 days if it was not re-open yet.
Fell much better now with my file reopened and the ajustment made.
Thank you
October 12, 2016 at 18:25
Hello Simon,
Thank you for your website.
My case number is 2017EU2****
Cutoff was around April last year.
Will it cause a delay for me if I unlock my ds260 now in October 2016.
My mistakes were (Please also tell me if I should actually unlock):
-I forgot to input my high school diploma, even though I input my Master’s deg.
-I forgot a previous address where I lived during 7 months.
-My current job changed
Thank you so much.
October 12, 2016 at 18:29
No delay caused. Unlock and correct.
October 12, 2016 at 18:42
Thanks, The lady I had on the phone was not very clear and wouldn’t confirm if it would cause delay or not.
Thank you for your time Simon.
October 12, 2016 at 18:48
Denial (for inaccurate answers) is much worse than delay.
October 12, 2016 at 19:11
For sure.

Hi simon,
I was emailing to KCC to unlock ds260 and they replayed me this one. what is the problem? can you help me?

Dear BritSimon, I have requested kcc to unlock my ds260 my case is Af2017258xx to change the interview Location, I am currently in Somalia and I am planning to go to Djibouti for my interview please what will I do to update the DS260? will this cause a delay note that it is the 2nd time I request unlock to kcc? thanks
November 19, 2016 at 16:12
You unlock the form, and normally you would need to provide an address in Djibouti . Once you resubmit the form you then email KCC and ask them to schedule the interview in Djibouti.
It won’t cause delay if you do it now.
November 20, 2016 at 13:45
Thanks, BritSimon, for your quick response, I will do as you advised I was given an address in Djibouti so iin my Ds I have previously included a telephone number in somalia, will I change that to a Djibouti telephone or will I leave it as it was ? Thank you
November 20, 2016 at 14:18
Just the address is important.
November 23, 2016 at 12:11
Hey Brit,
I just wrote KCC so that they unlock my DS-260 because I need to add my university degree that I earned last week plus I need to add my new mobile phone number.
Although I finished university I am still enrolled as a student until 02/28/2017 (until the semester/term is over)
I am planning to add my university degree, but since I am enrolled as a Student at my University until the 02/28/2017. I don’t know if I should keep “Student” until 02/28/2017 at “Primary Occupation” in the DS-260, would that be legitimate?
or should I, as I am currently searching for an internship, pick “NOT EMPLOYED” right now when I add my degree and than add the dates of the employer of my internship later in a new unlock?
Thanks a lot for your help and have a nice day Sir
Greetings
November 23, 2016 at 14:28
Those updates aren’t 100% necessary – so don’t worry too much about the timing of the updates.
November 23, 2016 at 15:04
I want to be as accurate as possible, so I am going to make these updates. So would you recommend me to pick the “NOT EMPLOYED” option or should I keep the University as primary occupation? What would you do? again, thanks a lot and greetings
November 23, 2016 at 15:05
Either option is fine…
February 15, 2017 at 00:23
Hi Brit,
On my DS-260 I mentioned “Yes” for the “Do you have documentation to establish that you have received vaccinations in accordance with U.S. law? “. But I am unsure If I satisfy it or not ? And also I need to update my current physical address. Should I unlock my DS-260 and make updates. Will this cause any delay for my case ?
March 20, 2017 at 18:58
My wife and son are running out of passport pages, and we wanted to get new passports before the interview. My number is EU25xxx, second draw, so interview will probably be in May or more likely, June. Of course, we are all current, and our case is still with KCC.
Just your thoughts / views on our situation:
– Are we better off waiting until the case is with local embassy to call them, ask them to unlock the case and change passport details
– Wait until the interview, do nothing, and bring both passports on the interview date
– Email KCC now, ask them to unlock it, wait. change, and see what happens
What would you do?
March 20, 2017 at 19:36
Apply for the new passports, take old and new to the interview.
April 26, 2017 at 20:42
We previously started this immigration process to move our family to the USA a few years back but we had to halt the process and stay in the UK. My wife is a UK citizen, we have been married nearly 16 years and we have been living in the UK for 11 years.
We were granted permission to reopen our case and paid the fees requested. and mailed in all requested forms and documentation. I did call the NVC to say I have paid the fees and mailed the forms which they can confirm they have received on 02/21/2017 and to tell them that the DS-260 was saying completed from the previous round of paperwork, I was told that is fine and if it is saying it is complete then it is complete. I did say that our address had changed since we last completed the form and was told that they could change the address over the telephone which they did.
We have been waiting for news on the next steps assuming that because we had done everything asked everything was ticking along, we called yesterday to be told that we need to fill in the DS260! We have been told it needs unlocking by a supervisor (that we can’t speak too!) but that can take 6 weeks and then we will have to wait for the affidavit of support to process which could be 10 weeks more! We thought we would have an answer to that by now! plus then we need the medical and the interview in London. I know that this is a marriage visa but hoping you could help. We booked flights to leave here July 10th, I know that there is a chance that my wife may have to stay behind and I will go in July with both kids and my wife will follow but I want to know can we speed things up? All the information is correct on the DS260!
We called the NVC back again and got a nice lady and she said that she doesn’t know if maybe they can use the old DS260? Its all just so confusing and extreamly stressful. To now be looking at 20 odd weeks to get this approval when we thought we would be fine to all leave in July.
Can we get the ds260 looked at quicker, for someone to give a 100% correct answer on if we need to do another?
Can we get it expedited somehow? If so how will that work?
Is there any way that my wife can come with us in July and finish the visa application and attend the interviews etc in the USA?
Will it really take them 6 weeks to just unlock this sodding form?
Thank you so much.
Joe

June 10, 2017 at 16:09
hi brit and god bless you
im dv 2018 winner i have asked kcc to unlock my ds260 and for sure they did
if i wanna delay my case how much time do I have in my hand ?
thanks
June 10, 2017 at 16:38
You could wait months. However, they might have started processing your DS260 anyway – and if they have the unlock will not delay your case. If you wanted to delay a better strategy is to not submit the DS260 until you are ready.
June 10, 2017 at 16:52
i already sent my ds260 on the second week of may and after 2 weeks i asked them to unlock my ds ,they did for sure .
now i want to not resubmit my ds until late
how much time do i have
by the way case number af28xxx
thanks
June 10, 2017 at 18:07
You have until next year to wait anyway – so you can resubmit in a few months time
June 10, 2017 at 18:16

June 19, 2017 at 10:07
Hello Simon ,
Thanks for your website
My case number is 2018AS5XXX
Will it cause delay for me if i unlock my DS260 now.
My mistakes were(please tell me if i should actually unlock)
1- i forgot to input my high school and secondary certificate i just mention my university’s degree, and the number of Institutes are 1 ,so do I need to make it 2 and mention the secondary high school or just keep my university degree which is BSc in electronic engineering .
2- i forgot to mention that i am a (sub-contractor employee ) and only mentioned the company were I work and its address ,do I need to fix that and mention I am sub-contractor ,or mention during interview
3- the marriage date is incorrect.,what I mean that I added the date of the wedding ceremony rather than the contract date mentioned in the certificate ,three is 1 month difference
really appreciate your help and feedback
June 19, 2017 at 15:15
No delay will be caused.
June 19, 2017 at 20:00
Dear ; Simon
Really I appreciate the great job you are doing.
I’m an Eritrean citizen (state of Eritrea), Dv 2018 selectee
Case number 2018AF16xx, but not yet submitted the Ds 260 form due to lack of travel document information ( passpot) and it will take up to 2 months to get a new passport from our embassy here at Khartoum (Sudan).
My questions are:
1. May i write my national identy card information instead of the passport, and unlock the form later to revise and update this?
2. Iknew that, it’s NOT possible to unlock the form once it was processed and case schudled for interview. The question is:
Is it possible to correct this at interview time with true valid passport in hand?
Regarding that, this point is the only thing need to be updated through out the Ds 260 form .
Your advice pls …
Thnx
June 19, 2017 at 22:31
1. Yes.
2. I would recommend you wait to submit so you don’t have to worry about correcting later. That will mean a later interview, but having a later interview doesn’t matter.
June 22, 2017 at 11:07
Haloo Brit
if i had send an email to request for them to unlock my case then i find out there is nothing to be corected can i send them another email to cancel the first email and tell them not to unlock my case
Too
Kenya
June 22, 2017 at 20:29
Try. If they unlock, just resubmit.
July 13, 2017 at 08:12
Hi Brit,
Thank you for such valuable blog. You are great!
I have submitted ds260 form on 1st of June and my case number is 2018EU00011***.
I engaged to my fiancée after results were published. And we planned to get married in December. But after reading other posts from your blog I found that I would have problems in order to get visa for my future wife. I have few related questions?
1. Should I marry to my fiance ASAP and add her to my ds260 form?
2. Taking into account that I have already submitted form if I request unlock form and add my future wife how would it affect processing period? Is it risky to do it?
Thanks in advance.
July 13, 2017 at 08:15
1. Yes. ASAP.
2. It is important to get your spouse included. You really should have waited to submit the DS260 until you were married – so now – just get married asap.
July 14, 2017 at 09:51
Does kcc knows data corrected or deleted at the ds260 after i asked to unlock the entry ?
I need to remove my daughter from the form because i didn’t add her at the initial entry, i guess this is the only way to avoid refusal issuance
Please advice
July 14, 2017 at 12:32
You cannot remove her DS260, and yes they will know you deleted her from your form. You should forget the DV lottery selection.
July 25, 2017 at 08:19
Dear Boss,
I’m DV2017 winner and I got married after submitting DS-260 and 3 weeks before the interview date. I went to the interview with my wife and the embassy employee told me that she added my wife to the system and asked me to pay the fees then asked my to update the DS260 with my wife’s information then to make the interview.
now it’s 9 days and i can’t find my wife’s name listed in my case and each time I contact the embassy they say we have added your wife to your case just keep trying with the system.
now I don’t know what to do and I’m afraid that I may lose my chance for Visa either for me nor my wife.. please advise.
many thanks
July 25, 2017 at 13:45
My advice would have been to add your wife MUCH earlier. Now, you have made it difficult. All you can do is keep trying to do what the embassy told you to do.
July 25, 2017 at 14:13
thank you for the reply.
would you recommend to contact KCC regarding this issue , or this might lead to more complication?
I already paid the fees and our passports are at the embassy and I understand that by end of Sep. 2017 the diversity will be closed.. is it correct?
July 25, 2017 at 14:51
KCC can’t do anything.
Yes September 30 is the end of the DV2017 year.
August 7, 2017 at 11:52
Hi Simon
Since submitting my DS260 in May (for DV2018), I’ve been to the States last month, and I have another short trip coming up in September. I didn’t include these dates in the form (in response to the question about recent travel to USA) because at the time I wasn’t sure I was going to travel. Would I need to ask KCC to unlock my form to now add these? Or could I explain these dates at the interview? Thank you.
August 7, 2017 at 12:18
If you are waiting anyway, you can unlock and correct – but it is not essential.
August 7, 2017 at 14:24
Dear Simon,
My husband and I had a baby after we had played DV 2017, then we won and our case number is 2017AF1xxx. Now i wanted to add our newly born son and requested “add applicant” by uploading his birth certificate upon requested so his DS260 form has been activated.
During adding applicant on the birth certificate I uploaded as a PDF the date was written according to the Ethiopian calendar (17.12.2008) but it is exactly same as 23.08.2016 in Gregorian Calendar (i.e.my son’s BD) but on all the other information we have put the G.C. which is 23.082016. I have also emailed the KCC to inform them that the date on the uploaded birth certificate is written as per Ethiopian calendar which seems he was born in 2008 but actually not he is less than a year now so that misunderstanding will not be created, though i haven’t received any email back yet but they have activated his DS260 form to complete it. So my question are;
1. Does this have a problem? if so what can i do?
2.we have completed and submit the DS260 but my son’s passport is not ready yet, so what do you advise me, to wait and complete the form or submitting the DS260 by selecting “other travelling document” instead of passport then unlock and correct later on?
3. if we wait until his passport will be ready since our DS260 are already submitted do you think the KCC might process to the next stage before our son’s DS260 is completed and submitted?
thank you so much for you kind advises
August 7, 2017 at 14:29
1. No problem. They will understand.
2. Use your passport number for the child. The real passport will be used at the interview.
3. Don’t wait!
Are you confused about the dates/case number – if yours is really a DV2017 case you are very late. Perhaps your case number is really 2018F1xxx?
August 7, 2017 at 15:46
Thank you for you reply
my case number is 20171xxx for sure but i realized very late that i have won the DV2017 in early August that is why i though it might be risky to wait until receiving my child’s passport to complete the 260 since it is already too late.
By the way it might take 3-5 days to receive my child’s passport so you still recommend to fill my passport number and show the real passport of my son during the interview?
thank you so much!

Oh wow – you are VERY late – maybe too late. Go ahead and file the DS260 immediately if you want any chance at all – honestly – you are not certain to be processed in time.

dear Simon
i have filled the 260 for my son and when i try to sign electronically it doesn’t respond, mine and my husband 260 says completed but my son’s still say incomplete what can i do please?
August 8, 2017 at 15:13
On the last page there is a link to information about selective service. You must click that link before the form will submit.
August 7, 2017 at 15:24
Hi Birt again,
During filling the 260, on the address section i have put the province name “Addis Ababa” but during playing the DV lotter i put “14” which actually is legal here to use both interchangeably.
1.is this big issue so that i will need to unlock and correct?
2. Does unlocking at this time for any case for DV2017 with a case number 2017AF15xx has any risk? considering the dead line is September 30, 2017?
please your kind advise?
August 7, 2017 at 16:13
If yours is a DV2017 case – you should already be scheduled – and therefore unlocking is not possible. Have you checked your ESC page to see if you have been scheduled. If you have not been – contact KCC to see why not.

Hi Brit,
I am the main applicant for DV2018 and filled out my DS260 long ago. I got married last month so I contacted KCC to unlock my forms to change my personal information and also add my husband’s DS260. However today I realized that, we made a mistake on my husband’s form where it asks “mother’s surname at birth”. Instead of providing the maiden name, we have provided her current surname. Do you think we should correct this at this point? We are afraid the unlocking of the forms at this time of the year may delay our interview big time. Thank you in advance for your reply.

That sort of change won’t cause delay.
August 12, 2017 at 15:35
Hi mr. Brit
Iam a dv lottery 2018 winner.
in my ds260 form , in primary occupataion I said STUDENT .
But in the question (in which occuputation do you intend to work in usa ) I said engnieering . 1-Do I need to correct it?
2- corrected in the interview?
August 12, 2017 at 15:52
1. No
2. No – it’s not important.
August 12, 2017 at 16:34
Hi Brit sorry to bother you, but you know this is chance comes once in a life time. And you’re the best one on this issue.
My case number is 2018eu38xx.. and submitted on June 2.
Most probably I’ll be current on October visa bulletin and scheduled on November.
But I have to add an address about my wife regarding her university time, thus I need to request an unlock from Kcc. Because her address officially seems in another city while she was studying in between 2011-2015 on ds form. We typed in according to official records but my wife used to come to Istanbul the city where the university is, only to take her exams and stay in her aunt’s home temporary.
Here is the Questions
1- ‘my case would be Affected or delayed if I unlock the system now ?’
2- should I unlock the system to add this info.
Best regards

1. No – but like you said – for a once in a lifetime chance, why worry if the interview is a month later???
2. It’s up to you.
August 12, 2017 at 17:46
I don’t want to delay otherwise I’ll jeopardy my chance to go because of family issues. I’m asking this because I’m really confused. Because in your post you say some changes would delay the case but some changes wouldn’t. Could I understand that mine is not a change that would affect the case to be delayed ?
August 13, 2017 at 15:36
You could understand by reading the article – yes.

Dear Boss..
if you remember my case, I’m DV2017 winner and I got married after scheduling my interview and i asked the embassy to include my wife in my case and they responded to my request but it took 2 weeks.
now my wife is included in my case and i submitted DS-260 for her but i still have to issues and i need your opinion/Advice.
1- though my wife is included in my case now my DS-260 is still showing me as single not married.
2- i sent an email to the embassy to inform them that i have submitted DS-260 for my wife and i am asking to schedule an interview appointment. They replied that they confirm that i submitted the DS-260 but now they have a problem in the system and they will inform me once they manage to solve it.
August 13, 2017 at 18:13
1. You should have changed your DS260 also.
2. OK – so you must wait for them.
August 13, 2017 at 18:49
Do you recommend to inform the embassy to unlock my DS260 to change it to married? Or should I just wait for my interview to avoid more delays!
August 13, 2017 at 19:29
Your choice.

Once you are scheduled for interview you won’t be able to unlock. So – that will have to do.
August 20, 2017 at 00:14

If not already scheduled for interview – yes.
September 12, 2017 at 18:38
Hi Brit
Case 2018AF12XXX. We’re away on holiday in December and are concerned we might get scheduled for this time. Would prefer to interview in January.
If I understand correctly, unlocking the DS260 and only locking again in early November should ensure this? Also need to make a minor update to the form!
September 12, 2017 at 18:45
No, that won’t necessarily stop them scheduling your case.
September 27, 2017 at 09:44
Hi Brit
if my case is going to be current and want to unlock my form and make changes in DS260 can i do that before Visa Bulletin is released , help me as i am confused .
September 27, 2017 at 11:36
Yes. Do it quickly.
September 28, 2017 at 18:13
What time it takes KCC to unlock the form
September 28, 2017 at 21:15
Depends how busy they are – from a day to 2 weeks.
September 28, 2017 at 16:41
Hi Simon,
I am planning to change from AOS to CP (in Nepal). I haven’t unlocked my DS 260 yet. My number will probably become current in the month of December. Do you think I will probably get a call for interview in December if I unlock my DS 260 now and change to CP?
Thanks!
September 28, 2017 at 17:10
No
October 17, 2017 at 06:07
I am from Ethiopia; my case number 2018AF00014***. According to the visa bulletin; my case will not be current in December. Most probably it will current in February, or March 2018. I made a slight mistake in the experience. It should be 2015 but I mistakenly put 2010. I sent Unlock request yesterday
My questions are
1. My initial submission was on July; Now it is October; will KCC consider me as a late person who submitted in October forgetting about the time I submitted initially?
2. Did I risk my chances if i submit a corrected form after 2 weeks from now (After my unlock request is approved)
3. Do i need to bring both the initial confirmation number which is given when I sent the ds-206 form and new confirmation number which is going to be given after I update and send again, during the interview?
Thanks Brit
October 17, 2017 at 12:27
1. No
2. No
3. Just the latest
October 17, 2017 at 18:07
Thanks for the positive responses
My unlock request is completed after 21 hours. It looks like KCC is not busy right now.
The status of my application says reopened and it doesn’t say incomplete. Therefore I confirm that the answer Brit gave for question 1 is right. Because my case is still at KCC.
