I submitted my DS 260 on the beginning of May 2016 but my passport for me and my spouse renewed, do I have to update the same on Ds 260 ?
June 16, 2016 at 22:27
It is best to do that. If you are DV2017 you have plenty of time – so unlock and update.

Hi brit
Im from tunisia and my case number is 2016af53xxx. I was living in spain for 7 years so i need police records from there. The issue is that i had to translate it to english and in the ambassy list of translator there is only translator from arabic and french ( our 2 nd lenguage) i sent an email to the embassy but still without response 1. how to deal with that? 2. Depends on my case # when i will get interviewed august or september?
June 16, 2016 at 23:09
1. Find a different translator.
2. Probably August, maybe September.
June 17, 2016 at 00:43
Do you think translating it in spain by sworn translator on the list of the US spanish embassy will be a good idea?
June 17, 2016 at 02:10
Translations can be done by any competent person.

Hi Simon,
I am born in Belgium but I did a mistake by writing South Africa, which is the country where I live, as a country of eligibility in the Diversity visa applications. It is due to my lack of knowledge; I thought that the country of eligibility is the country where I live. Now I was selected and I must apply for visa. My wife and my parents, who live also in South Africa with me, are born in Democratic Republic of Congo. So South Africa is not a country of born of my wife and my parents. Belgium, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa are all eligible countries. What do you think about this mistake and what can I do? Do you think that I can get a visa despite this mistake? Do you think that my application of visa will reach the step of interview so I will have an opportunity to explain that?
June 16, 2016 at 23:07
You will most likely be disqualified at interview.
Your own case should have been submitted under Belgium. It is possible to “charge” to a spouses country, but that would be DRC. DRC is a “limited country” (meaning people from that country have less chances than other AF region countries). Therefore, but charging to SA, you have received an advantage in the draw process. A similar case was recently refused in JHB embassy for the same reason – so I know the embassy are aware of the rule. The rule is quoted below – note the point about gaining benefit – your risk is for that reason.
“Errors in Choice of Country of Chargeability: If the entrant chooses the wrong country of chargeability at the time of the initial entry, the error will generally be disqualifying. However, if a DV applicant chooses a country of chargeability during DV registration that is within the same geographic region (one of the six) as the correct country of chargeability, and you determine that the applicant gained no benefit from his or her error, and there are no fraud concerns,, you may continue processing the application using the correct country of chargeability in IVO.”
If you want to try to proceed, you can, but of course there is risk and there will be no appeal, and no refund of fees paid.

Dear BritSimon,
Good Day
I received e-mail from the US Embassy in Ankara – Turkey to confirm my interview date.
In the email they gave the option to edit my form DS 260
(If you need to edit your submitted DS-260 visa application (not applicable for V92 and V93 applicants), please notify the consular section using the contact form so that the changes may be saved before the interview day).
I got a new passport, In the new passport the Surname was changed depending on the nationality certificate. While the Surname in the old passport is a repeat for the third name.
This decision was taken by the Iraqi Passports Department in Baghdad.
I want to edit the information about my passport in the form DS 260 and send it to the embassy in Ankara through the contact form.
The problem in the specified topic in the form Contact
You can’t write a subject of any type except topics are defined by them:
(Select a subject from the drop-down menu. Please make sure that it is not empty before you submit)
The topics are:
1. How may I file an immigrant visa petition for my relative?
2. What is the status of my immigrant visa case?
3. What is my appointment date?
4. May I reschedule my appointment?
5. Am I protected by the child status protection act (CSPA)?
6. What is an affidavit of support?
7. What is a police certificate?
8. My alien resident card has expired, what now?
9. I have a general question about diversity visas.
10. I have a general question about immigrant visas.
11. I have a question about DV2012 results.
As you see there isn’t any topic about passports
Which topic can I use to edit my DS 260 and explain for the embassy the change of my Surname?
And there is an attachment for a file in the contact form, if you advise me to send that form can I attaché the first page for the two passports ( the old and the new one).
What do you recommend?
Thanks in advance

June 17, 2016 at 04:39
Dear Britt, thanks for the good work. I was selected for DV 2016,My case number is 2016AF55….,however I realize that my passport details were not included on the DS 260 form but rather OTHER,kindly advise. Thanks
June 17, 2016 at 05:40
You will shortly get your 2NL – so you must take your passport to the interview.
June 17, 2016 at 08:09
Thanks Brit.
June 17, 2016 at 05:25
Dear simon,
I have read through your post about DV 2016.
You posted 2NLs for DV2016 were started sending on August 2015.
1. is it before or after VB was released for DV2016?
2. 2NLs were sent first before VB was announced?
3. Does it mean people who got 2NLs on August will get interview on October 2015?
My CN is AS27xx not that high number but I expected I will get 2NLs on Oct or Nov 2016, interview on Dec or Jan according to 2015 VB history you posted.
4. however, if the 2NLs sent out early before VB, should i be expecting there are chances to get 2NLs?
I just wanted to know how DV works.
Looking forward your reply and thank you as always.
warm regards,
SoeThura

Later on i went to the printing shop after the submission of ds260 i opened up my case and i couldn’t see that page except other pages like personal/Address/ Phone, Family,Previous U.S.TravelWork/Education/ Training Security and Background Social Security NumberLocation ,Preparer Information etc .

June 17, 2016 at 08:01
Hello Bri Sir,
I Hope u will be OK with good health.
I am from Sri lLanka and now I am living in Dubai
When I applied D-260 I did not get marry. Now I am marred and pregnant also. So I want to add my husband. I requested to unlock my D-260 form but their said that now cant edit.
please find the bellow reply from KCC. ( I copy from mail )
[Your case number is now current for interview processing. Once the interview date has been scheduled, you will receive notification via email to check http://www.dvlottery.state.gov. If you need to make changes to your DS-260 you should contact the consular section where you will be interviewed, or bring the information about your changes to your interview appointment. Because your case is ready to be scheduled, KCC can no longer unlock your application.]
So my question is as above information form KCC can I add my husband when my interview time? Otherwise if need to submit his detail before interview what kind of document he has to provide?
I sent to mail Abu Dhabi(UAE) embassy couple of week ago and I did not receive any reply. So what can I do now. Shall I visit & ask from Embassy or I will go directly interview all document with husband?
Please answer. I got tension. Thank you.
June 17, 2016 at 17:04
It’s a pity you left this so late. That is the cause of your tension.
Now, you are in the hands of the embassy, but they won’t answer you until they have your file from KCC. So – wait until you have the 2NL, and then try to contact the embassy to ask them what to do.
June 17, 2016 at 09:25

June 17, 2016 at 17:01

Hi Birt, we got our affidavit of support form yesterday, My spouse cousin sent it but i have a little problem, you said that the form should be l-134 but not I-864 form. Now we have received this I-864 form i am worrying if it won’t cause a problem. Our interview is about two weeks from now. Pls help me! Thanks
June 17, 2016 at 16:56
You can’t use the I-864.
June 17, 2016 at 10:23
Hi I’m wondering if you can help me?
Me and my partner are trying to work out if we can apply for the DV lottery. He is born in Australia, and me in the UK. Now, I know the uk isn’t eligible, but I was wondering if, like in your case, we could apply together as he is Australian?
We are not legally married, but we are defacto spouses and live together as spouses.
Any advice would be appreciated!
June 17, 2016 at 16:56
If you get married prior to the entry you can both enter (individually) – thereby doubling your chances.
If you don’t marry before entry only he can enter (de facto marriage is not recognized). If he is selected you could then marry and you would be included on his case.
June 17, 2016 at 10:26

June 17, 2016 at 12:12

He seem very at this.
What is the way forward for this kind of situation?
Pls help.

Hello Brit,
CN is 2016AF55XXX.
I added my newborn to the DS260 and included the mothers passport number. I will soon be getting my newborns passport. Being as close at we are to the interviews/end of the 2016 DV season should I really look at unlocking the DS260’s to add the correct passport number or should I leave it as is?
June 17, 2016 at 16:50
You can’t unlock now. Discuss at the interview.
June 18, 2016 at 07:12
Brit,
You mean I shouldn’t or I cannot unlock at this point?
June 18, 2016 at 15:07
Cannot.

June 17, 2016 at 14:13
Hi Brit..
my passport is not ready,in my country it takes time,so what other documents can i use to register the form 260 before my passport is ready.?
June 17, 2016 at 16:47
Other national ID document.
June 17, 2016 at 15:50
Dear Britsimon,
In your DS-260 Guide, you recommend saying Yes to the below question. However then the form is asking for an explanation of this, what would you suggest to say here ?
Do you seek to enter the United States for the purpose of performing skilled or unskilled labor but have not yet been certified by the Secretary of Labor?
Many thanks.
June 17, 2016 at 16:42
Put ANYTHING you like. It won’t matter.
June 17, 2016 at 18:02
I would be going for interview on the 23 june,i am a final year university student,i have my five wassce, but i did diploma before proceeding to degree so indicated in my ds260 form that i did diploma but i stated in the form that i completed my diploma 2012 but on my diploma the completion year is 2013,i actually mistakenly put 2012 instead of 2013,Would that be a problem during my interview?
June 17, 2016 at 18:54
Usually not a problem, unless the CO feels you lied for some reason.
June 17, 2016 at 18:04
Dear Brit
I’ve recently received an update on my ds260 status from kcc which is stage 3 (as you explained on your ‘communication with kcc’ psot)
a couple of questions please…
1.when does the ‘in transit’ status on ceac should normally appear ?
2.Once ds260 is transferred to the consulate – does the later carry out additional background checks, or perhaps the ds260 goes through additional review by the consulate prior to the interview? I’m asking because I’m a foreign government official and I wonder if kcc actually concluded any necessary checks due to my position.
Thank you!
June 17, 2016 at 18:53
1. Just after the 2NL is sent out, before the embassy marks the case as received.
2. Background checks have been carried out. The embassy will interview you based on those checks and may perform additional checks after the interview if they deem that necessary.
June 17, 2016 at 18:40
Thanks million sir…
I got allrady 2nd letter and next month 2 nd week Interview also. This sunday I will go and ask from the emberssy. Is it correct right.
June 17, 2016 at 19:14
Hi, i passed the interview in 15/ june successfully.
until now my status it’s still ready, what is that mean ?
June 17, 2016 at 20:36
It simply means they haven’t updated your status. It might show AP before it shows Issued.
June 20, 2016 at 13:54
it shows AP today is that a problem or what ?
June 20, 2016 at 14:07
I already told you that would happen.
June 17, 2016 at 19:31
Hello Brit,
I have submit the DS260 for the principal aplicant, and when I began to fill the form for my spusse I found that:
Help: Course of Study
For high school course of study please indicate “Academic” or “Vocational.” For all other educational levels please indicate your major or concentration.
But i didn’t respect this , and instead, i wrote what i have in my high school diploma ( electrician ) but my diploma is vocational and it’s what the Embassy ask for.
Does it have any problem??! 🙁
Please can you suggest me what to do?
June 17, 2016 at 20:38
Vocational education should not be used to meet the requirement. So – do you meet the requirement before your education went toward a vocational path?
June 17, 2016 at 20:42
In fact I have a university degree diploma
June 17, 2016 at 20:57
And I have put both of them : High School Diploma (which is vocational) , and also University Degree
June 18, 2016 at 03:03
Hello Brit
My case number is 2017AF0005*** and I filled the e-dv as married because I am married. But I have submitted my DS 260 as the principal applicant but I have not yet filled my wife’s because I wanted my wife to join me later as I indicated on DS 260. But on the http://www.dvselectee.state.gov under the visa applicant interview there is something interesting that I needs clarification about. If you can please check under the who must attend the interview ” You, your spouse and any qualified unmarried children immigrating with you must participate in the interview. If your spouse and/ or qualified unmarried children will immigrate at a later date and travel separately from you, they are not required to participate in your interview. They will be scheduled for a separate interview appointment. You should contact the US embassy or consulate directly to arrange separate interviews, if needed.
Now my question is
1. Do I have to submit my wife DS 260 now or wait after my interview?
2. Will this delay my interview?
thank you.
June 18, 2016 at 04:01
Read the link below. You are making a mistake by not including your wife.

June 18, 2016 at 05:27
Dear Brit .
greetings .
Let me tell you the hole story , I am really worried these days Sir.
as i shared with you before that i went to interview on 10th of May 2016 and all was ok and the CO requested my work documents and he took my passport , on 12th of May i have submitted the required documents. But still i am waiting it has been almost 45 days.
One of my friend case was same and he also drop his passport on 10 of may we were together.
He got his visa last week on Sunday but i have not received it yet and i dont have any news yet.
I dont know what is going on .
Please let me know that should i wait or contact the embassy .
Thanks In Advance. . . !
June 18, 2016 at 05:48
There really is nothing to do but wait – but if you would like to contact the embassy that is OK
June 18, 2016 at 07:13
Greetings BritSimon and many thanks for your blood, sweat and tears on this site. I have a couple of questions if I may:
1) My case number is 2017OC0000006X (yes, less than 70).My consular interview will be in Sydney which only interviews on a Tuesday. Although my case number is low, I did not submit the DS-260 until 01 June.. Do you think I will still get interviewed within the first two Tuesdays of October, or because I waited 29 days to submit, it will be scheduled later?
2) In regards to bringing documents to the interview, do copies mean copies only, or do they mean copies that have been certified as authentic by an authoritative body such as the police?
June 18, 2016 at 15:07
1. I don’t know precisely. The speed of processing varies by case, and I don’t know how quickly any backlog built up.
2. Take originals and copies. The CO will see both documents and therefore does not need certifications.
June 18, 2016 at 08:24
In fact I have university degree diploma
And I have put both of them : High School Diploma (which is vocational, but I wrote there electrician as it is written on my diploma) , and also University Degree
Dear Brit,
Can you please tell me if this will affect on my admission? I am really worried about that!
Thank you in advance.
June 18, 2016 at 15:05
You should be OK – but of course the CO makes the decision.
June 18, 2016 at 09:27
I have tak my Interview jun2 i have been Approved and i did not get the notfication is it a risk
June 18, 2016 at 15:04
Until you have the visa in your hand there is a risk.
June 18, 2016 at 18:45
Dear sir,
I’d like to know while typing the name of applicants on DS260, do we have to type the full name as first, second, third and last or only the first, second and last as there is option on DS260 to hide the full name
June 18, 2016 at 19:32
Full legal name
June 18, 2016 at 21:47
My Friend live & work in Liberia. Had visited the USA more than twice. On his first visit, he went along with his wife and two children. His wife divorce him lated with the kids staying in her custody in the US and he sponsoring his kids monthly. He later got remarried in Jan to another women who is now winner of Dv2017.
1.Should he include his kids in ds260 form?
2.If he did, does he has to take the kids physically to the interview?
3. How are the kids going to be treated?
4. What could be the best way forward?
June 19, 2016 at 00:08
First, did he include the children in his eDV original entry. If he didn’t he will be disqualified. So I will now assume he did.
1. The children should be listed on his DS260. Whether he adds a DS260 or not depends on whether they need a Green Card or not (i.e. depends on their status in the USA).
2. Only if he needs to get them a GC
3. Huh?
4. Huh?
June 19, 2016 at 07:11
dear sir,i didn’t include my wife on 1st entry i mentioned there I’m legally separated, but not legally.my 7 year daughter was included on 1st entry.what should i fill up on ds260.please help me
June 19, 2016 at 17:19
If you chose legally separated you must have the court records to prove the legal separation. If you cannot produce that, they will disqualify you as you should have entered married.
June 19, 2016 at 23:31
can i mention on ds260(not yet fill up) I’m married?
thank you
June 20, 2016 at 14:26
If you left your wife OFF the eDV you WILL BE disqualified. You would be wasting your time to proceed.

June 19, 2016 at 12:16
Hi BritSimon.
1)in regards to the question ‘Number of educational institutions attended’ i declared 3 which is the number of high schools I went to. Was I meant to declare 4 to include primary school as well?
2)Also, I went to two different universities but dropped out after one semester each time. Were these meant to be included making the correct answer 6? .
3) Should I unlock and amend this information or leave until the interview?
June 19, 2016 at 17:13
1. It doesn’t matter.
2. No
3. Leave it.
June 19, 2016 at 15:53

Or, can we still use this one.
Best Regards

Hi Brit, I have made the first POE in the United States, and left the country 2 weeks after in April 2016. Meanwhile I gave department of homeland security an address in United States where the Green Card must be sent, it is an address of my friend in United States. My friend just wrote that he received notice form i-797c which requires to make a payment of 165.00 USD as a processing fee.
1) Is it mandatory to pay the fee? 2) If I want to extend my stay in home country for a 1 year, can I postpone this fee, if I would pay it later maybe they wouldn’t start counting the time I should relocate to USA?

1. Yes. You were given paperwork from the embassy.
2. It’s $165. It isn’t a lot of money. Just pay it rather than take risks.

Thanks Simon. What would be the best if I would like to stay at least one more year in my home country? Any advices?

Hi BritSimon,
I was selected for DV2017 (interview probably at end of 2016) but had organized previously a touristic trip in USA next September.
As a European citizen, do you know if I can apply for a touristic visa via ESTA (normal process) or if I need a special visa to travel (given the fact that I will maybe immigrate soon) ?
Thank you for your answer.

Many thanks for your quick answer.
Do I need to specify that I am in the process for a diversity visa when I pass the frontier with my ESTA form ?

I have filed two dependents in my tax return the total number are three; should I be eligible to sponsor one family member as annual incom is around $35,000 ?

Probably – it depends how large their family is (your family and the derivatives of the person you sponsor are added)

Dear Mr Simon I thank you in advance for your support by giving valuable information.
I am a DV2017 selectee with no. 2017AF000009xxx, from Ethiopia. I have the following questions.
1. I am married. The date of the marriage was on 17 January 1999 in Addis Ababa but we took the marriage certificate from another town in Ethiopia after 4 years in 2003 from JIjiga town. The date of the marriage is clear for me but in the place of the marriage on DS-260 form did I write Addis Ababa or the certificate I took Jijiga (another city in Ethiopia)
2. I have spouse and 3 children (16 year, 10 year and 3 year); Is there a mechanism to pay application fee as a family member?
Thank you

Hello Mr.Brit, thank you for helping us with the answers.
I have signed & submitted the DS260 form, 2017EU2XXX
for me (principal applicant), and for my spouse (accompany)
And there it is written ”Complete”, also I got a confirmation page. My questions are:
1-Do I have to pay any fee online now, or I have to wait for Visa application?
2-Is there any problem that I didn’t submit the 2 forms of DS260 at the same time (but one in the 16th June, and the other one for my spouse in the 17th June)
3-Usually how many time does it get to recieve an email from the CEAC for 2NL
4-Approximately if you have any idea.. do you know when will be the interview for us?
Thank you in advance and have a nice day!
June 20, 2016 at 14:14
1. No – you pay on the day of interview.
2. No

Hi, first of all-thanks a lot for this website, it really helped us in the process! Now my problem- we made our first trip to the US in April, got the visas stamped, all went well and we were told the green cards would be sent to the address we provided. Now almost 3 months later, we have only received my husband’s social security number, no green cards. I googled around and found people were talking about checking the delivery status on the ELIS website, but it does not recognise our case number. We paid the fees (165 each I think) before we made this first activation trip, and got a number on the receipt, but that website does not recognise this number either. The biggest problem is that I have to travel to NYC for work in one month. My visa was charged to my husband’s quota and the visa in my passport says ‘only valid if acc by spouse’, which makes me quite nervous. Do you have any advice on whom to contact in this case or suggestions on how to solve this? Many thanks in advance!

You can call USCIS to check on it – but 3 months is about normal at the moment. Since you have now activated you no longer have to travel with your husband. Immigration officials will know that.
