Hi Brit,
I am considering to switch embassies due to ADD being slow in scheduling. Assuming I can make that switch, I am not entirely sure which embassy would be best to switch to in Africa or the middle east.
From the information I got from Xarthisius site, SA seems to be performing well. Do you know any other embassies that are performing relatively well in that region?
May 5, 2023 at 14:47
Switching might not be easy – so your only chance is by having a strong connection to the country you choose (i.e. you live there already).

Hello Simon,
EU29K
First of all I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the help and info provided during my process. I have the visa in my hands and I keep looking at it as I still can’t believe it’s mine after 12y of applying to the DV lottery. Thank you a million and God/Universe (or whatever you believe in) bless you.
I have a small question, I provided the updated address during the medical exam but forgot to do that during the interview at the Consulate so they printed on the envelope the hotel address I used in the DS260 form. Can I change it and if yes, do I have to point out to the immigration officers that the address on the envelope is not updated? I am scared the card will be shipped to the hotel address since it’s printed on the envelope. I was thinking to get in contact with the hotel and make them aware just in case this happens.
May 5, 2023 at 14:46
Your last chance to update the USA address will be at the POE (arrival airport). Make sure you prompt the immigration officers at the airport, otherwise it will be sent to the address they have.
Congrats on the visa – I hope you make a wonderful life in the USA!
May 5, 2023 at 17:05
Thanks a lot Simon! I have contacted USCIS and the agent told me to complete the AR-11 form to ask for the address change. I hope this is also an option and they advised me correctly, I explained them that I still have to enter US the first time. In any case I will make sure to inform the immigration officers at POE. Thank you again for all your help!
May 5, 2023 at 21:44
Ignore the advice from USCIS. Whilst you should always update your address once you are a resident, it will not change where the SSN and GC are sent to. You must do that at the POE.
May 4, 2023 at 20:13
Hello,
I just wanted to ask if this is correct. I came across this today.
After you move to the US, you must file Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status to USCIS. This form costs $1,140 which you must pay. When you pay this form, USCIS will mail your Green Card to your new address after a few weeks.
Now, I am familiar with the fee that you must pay the embassy which is $330 and also the USCIS fee which is $220 I believe and then there’s also the medical fee. But I am not aware of this $1.140? is this new?
May 5, 2023 at 14:43
If you were granted your visa abroad through consular processing, then you do not have to adjust status in the USA – so you don’t pay the fee.

Hi Brit. We are scheduled for medicals on 8 May and interview on 11 May I have 2 questions
1. In the event that my childrens passports are not available by time of our Medicals will they allow us to continue with only their birth certificates or IDs?
2. My 14 year old son has not been vaccinated. There are currently no pfizer vaccines in SA for the past 3 months and expected supply is in June. Will they deny us medical exams based on that?
May 5, 2023 at 14:43
1. That would delay the issuance of visas, but you can do the interview.
2. The physician can take into account local supply of vaccines.
May 6, 2023 at 07:11
Much appreciated
May 4, 2023 at 17:54
Hi Brit In which years is the tax return required from the dv2023 winner?
May 5, 2023 at 14:37
Huh? Please be more clear.
May 4, 2023 at 05:01
Hi Brit,
My younger sister submitted her Ds260 around October last year but up to date she’s not received any email or heard anything again..her case number is AF00046828..
May 5, 2023 at 14:37
That is most affected by the embassy and how well they are working.
May 3, 2023 at 21:07
Hi Simon, thank you for all the help you have been providing. I am really thankful.
Right now, I am planning Adjustment of status (AOS). Me and my wife both are graduate student here at the US. And we have a US born son. Since our combined stipend is just around $48k, I am thinking of including I-134 affidavit of support in the AOS package. I am planning of asking a friend to fill up the I-134 form for me. In the recent form, in question no 18 of Part 3, it asks: “Have you previously submitted a Form I-134 on behalf of a person other than the beneficiary listed on this Form I-134?”
The fact is 3 years ago, he had filled up I-134 for a guy in a DV process. Everything went fine; the guy came to the US and is doing great. Now my question is: is it safe to ask him to fill up I-134 form for me too? or this is a bad idea?
May 5, 2023 at 14:36
Considering the timeline it is probably safe to use that sponsor – but only the officer can decide for sure.
May 3, 2023 at 13:31
hello simon,
i am a dv lottery 2023 winner, albania.
i have the interview in 2 weeks and i already posted all documents. i lived more than 6 months in italy and got a police certificate which i already send, but now i noticed while compiling it, i made a mistake, in name i put my surname and in surname i put my name. but all the other info such as passport number, birthday are correct. i translated and notarized correctly
should i get a new PC and give it during the interview? or is ok with it
thx
May 5, 2023 at 14:35
Personally I would apply for the new police cert now, just in case they have a problem with the existing one during the interview. That would then reduce the post interview delay.
May 6, 2023 at 14:29
Should i give them directly the new one? Or wait for them to tell me?
May 6, 2023 at 14:43
Should i gove them directly the new one, and tell them that in the old one there was a mistake? Or wait for them to tell me?
May 6, 2023 at 15:57
As I already said – have that ready in case they ask.
May 3, 2023 at 06:50
Hi Simon, thanks for all your help. I’ve asked this before but still not submitted DS260 for various reasons. I am a DV23 winner (OC16**) but have not yet submitted my DS260, just wanted to check if you think it’s too late now since it’s already May and I’d need to be processed and interviewed (London embassy) within the DV23 timeframe? Thanks! Craig
May 4, 2023 at 19:21
Depends on complexity of your DS260, field of work, countries lived and travelled. If you file it now, you may be processed in time, especially as in July VB 1600 will be current most likely for OC. Why let this opportunity go to waste.
May 5, 2023 at 14:33
You can submit now, and your DS260 will probably be processed within a couple of weeks. Because London is working well you will probably get an interview in time (assuming you get current). Time to get on with it, unless you want to watch the next VB.
May 3, 2023 at 06:50
Hi Simon, would u pls help me? I am a 2023 selectee. My case is current. In the first registration form I wrote my husband’s year of birth instead of mine. I wrote day and month of birth correctly.
I filled ds260 all correctly.
Would it be a trouble in interview?
May 5, 2023 at 14:28
No
May 3, 2023 at 01:13
Hello
I am a refugee in Turkey and I want to know if I win in the lottery, considering that my passport has expired and if I go to the embassy of my country to renew my passport, it may be dangerous for me, will the American embassy accept these conditions or not ?
I am very worried
Thank you very much for your help
May 5, 2023 at 14:27
Win the lottery first – then ask these questions…
May 2, 2023 at 13:25
Hello, I hope you are good! Could I please ask- a few questions leading up the DV draw, we are Aussies living in Dallas…
1. Do we just go to a police station to get a Police Background Check? And do you know if it coasts anything, or how long it takes?
2. Would our interviews be in Kentucky if we get through the draw/ process?
3. Does being in the USA make the process faster or easier in anway?
Thanks heaps Simon.
May 5, 2023 at 14:26
You’re getting ahead of yourself – and this is not a fast process, so slow down – there will be time for you to get better understanding.
1. If you adjust status you don’t need a police cert. If you process abroad, there are instructions you will get.
2. LOL – no. Not Kentucky.
3. It means you can process a different way – adjusting status. Let’s talk if you get selected.
May 5, 2023 at 22:08
Thank you heaps!
We are in Texas.
Hopefully after tomorrow I’ll be back here.
May 5, 2023 at 22:17
Good luck!
May 2, 2023 at 13:12
Hi Simon,
I’m a 2022 DV winner and I’m planning to enter the US this July for the first time. I am based in Europe having a temporary visa and working here, so I’m thinking to stay here for now as I have a job. My questions are:
1) If I don’t apply for re entry visa, do I need to live at least 6 months in the US every year starting from 2024 or 2023?
2) should I apply for re-entry Visa before I leave US so I can live in Europe until I decide to move permanently ?
3) what is your advice for my situation where I have to live in Europe to save the residency here and also in the US.
Appreciate your help

May 2, 2023 at 10:34
Hello Brit. My question is: I recently was offered a J1 Visa to attend a conference in the US, but didn’t go due to health reasons. Given than there is a 2year- home country residence rule attached to that visa, would it disqualify me from getting the visa if I win the DV Lottery? despite the fact that I never traveled to the US? Kindly clarify. Thank you

No
May 2, 2023 at 07:23
Hello Birt, Thanks for your help ,I have a question , I changed my embassy from Ankara to Yerevan , and my case number is about 2023AS12000, Do you think they put my case in the last position of the queue?
May 5, 2023 at 14:19
I don’t know.
May 9, 2023 at 00:08
Is there any difference between who selected an embassy as a default with who changed their embassy to that embassy ?
May 9, 2023 at 08:26
No
May 2, 2023 at 06:57
Greetings shiko hope,
My name is Lennox Ochieng from Kenya. I married my longtime girlfriend customarily without legal papers in January 2021 and last year we applied as married on the dv lottery but we got separated in February this year. In case I win, do i have to provide an affidavit of separation during the interview or will it low my chances of getting approved. and how should i state when filling the ds 260.
May 5, 2023 at 14:19
You created a problem in claiming you were married when in fact you had not legalized the marriage. There is a chance of refusal. However, it is only a lottery and your chance of selection is low anyway…
May 1, 2023 at 18:11
Hi Brit, I am awaiting a hopeful interview.
I have my partner listed as an accomplice in my DS 260 but we have separated and no longer intend to migrate together.
Do I go to the interview alone? Or how would you progress considering I still intend to migrate?
May 5, 2023 at 14:16
You can go alone.
May 1, 2023 at 03:47
Hello Brit Simon,
Greetings from Kabul, Afghanistan!
Due to the timing difference we couldnt get any chance to ask question in live sessions, as it is always midnight here during your sessions. If we know your session time and date a bit in advance we are happy to sacrifice our sleeps and attend 🙂 .
DV 2023 winner, case number 2023AS18K, DS260 submitted by 31Jul2022. Islamabad embassy.
Last email from KCC says “Your case is now current for interview processing…..” and case current since March 2023 however, still haven’t got any 2NL. Since Aug 2021 US embassy got closed in Kabul due to the political changes, and Pakistan is not eligible for DV, so nearly 99% DV cases in Islamabad are related to Afghans. So far the embassy has issued 200+ cases only, any chances whether we will get interview appointment?
May 5, 2023 at 14:08
I can’t guess your chance, but it is clear that Islamabad is restricting interviews. All you can do is hope for the best.
May 1, 2023 at 02:32
Hello Simon, my case number is 2023AF40k post Nairobi, is there any chance to change your post embassy if your current for interview processing?
May 5, 2023 at 14:07
Possibly, although it is very difficult once you have reached the AV stage. The only way to be pulled out of the AV queue is if another embassy asks KCC on your behalf to reassign the case to them because you live in that country and they somehow take interest in your case. That is rare, but has happened.
May 1, 2023 at 01:29
Hi Brit Simon,
I hope everything is well. Simon is there any hope of DV 2021?
May 5, 2023 at 14:05
We are still waiting for the outcome of the appeal.
April 30, 2023 at 22:10
Dear Mr Brit,
My case number 4XXX for DV 2023 and applied using AOS.
I toke finger print on Feb but haven’t got an interview.
It has been almost 3 months.
I am wondering is it usually took this long.
If Yes, when would be the normal time I might receive an interview?
If not, is it ok i contact USCIS for the case progress?
Thank you in advance
May 5, 2023 at 14:05
Yes it can take a while sometimes. Be patient, I’m sure they will send an interview notice soon.
April 30, 2023 at 12:07
Hi Brit,
How are you? Hope all is well.
Do you know what the current waiting time for I-131 (re-entry permit) is?
I applied on 2nd Sept 22, had my fingerprints taken on 7 Oct 22, and I still haven’t received it.
Does it normally take this long?
Thanks!
April 30, 2023 at 13:37
No it does not normally take that long.
May 2, 2023 at 10:58
Hmmm…What could this mean? I haven’t received any request for additional information whatsoever..
May 5, 2023 at 14:20
I don’t know. Ask USCIS.
April 29, 2023 at 21:30
What about 2020 dv
April 29, 2023 at 18:40
Dear Mr. Simon
My interview in 2 weeks and im preparing my self,
My question is that i had an asthma when i was a child untill age 23 and then all is gone, do you think this (asthma) could be a reason for denial as they might consider it a chronic disease or maybe even a physical disorder even if its strange to consider it like this.
Thanks in advance,
April 30, 2023 at 13:36
They are concerned with 4 serious *infectious* diseases – not asthma.
April 29, 2023 at 18:23
Hey Simon, how often do embassies reject dv lottery winners because of old photos?,and if I used the same photo that I applied in dv lottery 2023 for dv lottery 2024 will I be immediately disqualified? 🙁
April 30, 2023 at 13:35
Photo refusals are very rare – and generally only happen with people that use an old photo where the person is obviously a lot younger than now.
April 29, 2023 at 14:39
Dear Sir,
I hope this mail finds you well.
I am one of DV 2023winer from Afghanistan.
My interview location is Tashkent-Uzbikistan.
my question is this that does US Embassy in Tashkent required Form I-134 for Afghans DV winner ?
if yes, I decide to go Texas at my sister’s house.
So, is it possible that I make form I-134 by my cousin and he is living in California cause my sister is new in US.
I appreciate your helping.
Regards,
Amiri
April 29, 2023 at 15:08
I can’t predict whether the embassy will require an I-134 in your case or not.
You can live in a different state as your sponsor.
April 28, 2023 at 20:03
Hi Brit Simon,
Thankyou for your ongoing support. I am awaiting an interview still in the oceanic region- My case number is above 2000.
Sadly I have separated from my wife since filling out the ds260 – do I need to change details somehow?
Many thanks
April 29, 2023 at 09:55
Being separated does not change your marital status – so nothing to change.
April 30, 2023 at 16:13
Hi Brit- thank you I understand.
Do would I just go to my interview alone though? I have her listed as an applicant on my ds260?
But we’ll obviously no longer be migrating together?
May 2, 2023 at 19:54
Sorry Brit, still seeking clarity from above.
May 5, 2023 at 14:03
Yes you can go alone.
May 9, 2023 at 19:53
Brit- thank you. Do you think I might be disqualified though as my DS260 wont match my actual interview? Ie: My DS260 says me plus and accomplice but I’ll be going to my interview alone?
May 9, 2023 at 23:13
Don’t you think I would have mentioned that if it was a realistic problem?
May 11, 2023 at 16:50
Sorry Brit- last question. Thank-you in advance.
Could i be disqualified for my DS260 and interview not matching? Ie: my DS260 would say- “I have an accompany” but i would be at my interview alone?
May 12, 2023 at 17:17
Not really, no
May 11, 2023 at 16:51
Got it- thanks
April 28, 2023 at 18:09
Hi Brit
I am the applicant. I have a son and a wife who will accompany me to the US. Is giving their details on my DS 260 and ticking that they will accompany me to the US enough for them to be scheduled for interview or do I have to submit 3 forms separately?
April 28, 2023 at 18:30
When you login to the CEAC system, you create a DS260 for each person emigrating, and submit all at the same time.
April 28, 2023 at 00:35
Hi i am feisal i have gone my interview at the us embassy in nicosia Cyprus in January till now am in 221-g( security background check) they have updated my case for the fourth time now. I Had emailed them many times but they just kept saying wait till we get back to you. Any advice would be appreciated.
April 28, 2023 at 15:07
All you can do is remain patient.
April 27, 2023 at 19:11
Thanks / US Consulate Montréal
Hello Simon, I wanted to thank you for your support over the past 11 months. Thanks to you, we were able to patiently wait and be 100% ready. We finally have our visa in our hands! We are currently searching for work to join my brother in California by October 2023. As a final note, here is our experience at the Montreal Consulate. We had an appointment in April 2023 for two adults and a baby. The first agent checked our documents and asked for the originals and copies, as well as English translations of the documents (even if they were in French). Then we had a 10-minute interview in an open office while standing. The agent asked us about the applicant’s level of education, the type of job we were looking for, why we wanted to go to the United States and California, if we had a sponsor, and if not, how much money we had (without requesting proof), and whether we owned our home (we did not). The visa was immediately approved for my husband and me, and put on hold for our baby because he was waiting for his second dose of the Covid vaccine. We were able to receive our two passports within 5 working days (very fast). We are still waiting for the final validation for our baby and his passport. A dream come true!
April 28, 2023 at 15:07
Awesome news – congratulations!
April 27, 2023 at 11:15
Hi Britsimon
My daughter has dual citizenship (AF & AS)and both countries eligible for DV lottery, she is currently on F1 visa on her AS passport, and she is DV2023 selectee on her AF passport and scheduled for consular interview soon. I suppose she will use the DV with her AF passport to enter US again after that, but what’s going to happen for her F1 visa on AS passport? Will that be a conflict? Must she also bring her AS passport for interview since it has F1 visa on it? Thank you and much appreciated for your guidance.
April 28, 2023 at 15:06
There is no rule that says she must use one passport or the other, she can take both and discuss both, but will need to choose which one to move ahead.
April 26, 2023 at 13:29
Hello! My case number 17XXX played from Uzbekistan ds form was sent on May 20, unblocked on June 20 and immediately closed. A couple of times we wrote to CCC to find out the status of our case, they answered with 3 types of letters! But yesterday they answered with a 4 type of letter, they say, wait for the appointment of an interview. Since the billet is 12500 for Uzbekistan, what can this letter mean! Thanks for answers!
April 27, 2023 at 09:03
It means wait for an appointment – just as it says. Your chance of getting an appointment now depends on your embassy…
April 26, 2023 at 13:26
Hi Brit, I think I screwed it up really big… Was put on AP and asked for the travel history. I listed all countries but one — I totally forgot about it (didn’t put it in DS260, either). Now I recalled about it, do you think I need to send them an updated list? It’s not a problem to send it, but won’t it be a problem is the ask why didn’t I include this country into DS260? The country is Netherlands — maybe it’s not a big deal in the end?
April 27, 2023 at 09:02
Worrying for nothing. Just give them the accurate info.
April 25, 2023 at 14:19
Hi dear Brit, we are 2022 green card holders, we had to go back to our country because of some circumstances. Do we need to reenter the US within 6 months?
Thanks
April 25, 2023 at 17:00
You can stay out for up to 12 months, but absences under 6 months are technically a little safer.
April 25, 2023 at 04:36
Hi, Brits
I just want to find out what it means when the status moves from “refused221g” to “Ready” after I send an outstanding documents. Thanks
April 25, 2023 at 15:49
It could mean several things – so don’t obsess about it.
April 25, 2023 at 03:10
Hi Brit Simon,
I am a DV winner from Sri Lanka, we obtained our police certificates in Nov 2022. I still have not got my 2NL and the standard validity of the Sri Lanka police certificate of 6 months will be up soon.
Is there a stipulated validity period for a police certificate for the DV process or is it different for each country for DV purposes?
I have emailed the Sri Lanka US embassy but no response yet.
I remember that I read somewhere that it could be valid for 2 years but now I cant find the place where I saw it.
Can you please shed some light?
Thank you so much for the great service
April 25, 2023 at 15:48
The instructions for DV make it clear that PCs are valid for up to 2 years.
April 25, 2023 at 21:27
Thank you so much as always, BritSimon
April 24, 2023 at 23:41
Hi Brit. I am a DV 2023 selectee. Do we need to show a positive covid 19 test at the airport before traveling?
April 25, 2023 at 09:55
Please check for your country.
April 24, 2023 at 21:35
Your case number is now current for interview processing. Once the interview date has been scheduled, you will receive notification via email to check https://dvprogram.state.gov. If you need to make changes to your DS-260 you should contact the consular section where you will be interviewed, or bring the information about your changes to your interview appointment. Because your case is ready to be scheduled, KCC can no longer unlock your application.
Please what does this mean and what should I do?
April 24, 2023 at 22:48
It means you are in the AV queue for an embassy. If they are working well you can expect your 2NL soon. If they are not working well – that is another story.
April 24, 2023 at 14:39
Hi Brit,
CN 2023EU19XXX – Paris Embassy
Today, I picked up my passport with the visa.
Thank you very much for all your help. What you’re doing to support each selectee in the process is to be commended. You have certainly helped me going through every step and you’re probably one of the most reliable sources out there for support in the DV lottery.
I will be travelling to the US for work next week and will take the opportunity enter the country under my permanent resident status. When I get there, do I need to go through immigration or should I go through the resident/US citizen line?
Best wishes,
Veronique
April 24, 2023 at 22:46
Congratulations Veronique!
On the first entry you go through the visitors line – they will probably take you to a secondary area to go through the sealed envelope. It won’t be an interview – they are just processing the paperwork.
Best of luck for the move!
April 24, 2023 at 13:00
Hi Brits,
My name is Terence. I’ve been following your youtube page and really appreciate your willingness to help with info on this sometimes stressful situation, lol. I’ve been selected for the DV lottery 2023, my wife and I are both on valid F1 visas, and currently reside in Louisiana, USA. I’ve only recently completed the DS-260 forms online. I’d like to know if this is the only thing required at this time? or do we already need to complete and submit/mail in the Adjustment of status form (I-485) now as well?
April 24, 2023 at 22:44
Oh Terence – you need to get off your arse and learn what the heck you are doing. You are about to let this opportunity slip away.
I assume you will want to do adjustment of status in the USA. In that case I strongly suggest you go to the link below and read the spreadsheet linked from the first post in that thread. It really covers everything you need to know. Get to that immediately.

April 24, 2023 at 10:08
Hello dear Simon,
My status is NVC, what does it mean? Also why they do not release new case numbers for the AS region in the visa bulletin in the last months?
Note: Do you know any sources that explains the strange words and abbreviations such as NVC and 2NL in the DV process?
April 24, 2023 at 22:42
This is late in the year to be so underinformed – please take some time to read the basics.
Start here: https://britsimonsays.com/dv-2023-basic-questions/
April 24, 2023 at 09:45
Hey Simon,
1) I am a Saudi born-Indian origin person with Canadian citizenship today. I do not have my Saudi birth certificate as my parents never registered my birth with Saudi authorities. However, I have obtained 2 affidavits from my parents AND have gotten an Indian Consulate (in Jeddah) issued birth certificate as that is where my birth was registered.
Would these 2 pieces of evidence suffice in lieu of Birth Certificate?
2) My wife updated her surname to her married name on her passport – however – the timing was such that this took place after the interview was scheduled at the Montreal consulate (and so DS-260 could not be opened). The US consulate in Montreal is also not responding around our queires to update her surname. She does have both her old and new passport though. How should we navigate this corner case?
Thanks!

1. I don’t know.
2. Discuss it at the interview.

Hello Simon,
Thank you for your great work.
My number is 23055 but I have not yet scheduled for interview as my embassy is working really slow in Tirana, Albania.
They are currently ready at 19.000-20,000 cases. Do you think my chances are still good to get to the interview? Thanks

I don’t know.

Hey Simon,
Thanks a lot for your contribution to the community.
Do you think that AS region with 20545 number will get a chance in DV2023?
Embassy is Doha, and DS260 was submitted in August.

I don’t know.

Hi BritSimon.
Is there anyway to find out the number of cases in the queue for a particular embassy? AF45*** from Ghana. Probably screwed looking at the slow pace with Accra embassy. Nevertheless still keeping fingers crossed for a miracle.

No.

Hi Brit,
Is there any disadvantage of applying by work experience in dv lottery rather than applying by education level? I have high school diploma but one subject is down. but regarding work experience I’ve more than 10 years of experience in related svp range and job zone. need your kind opinion. Thanks
April 24, 2023 at 22:36
No real disadvantage except it can be harder to prove as it is subjective.

hi greetings
I have registered for dv 2024 and as the day of showing results approaches, I checked the paper where I print my registration, unfortunately, I found that I misspelled my first name from zakaria to zakiaria is that a problem if I ‘m being selected?
April 23, 2023 at 14:06
Not a problem.

Hi Brit,
Can we provide two I-134 and IRS documents of two sponsors. Im the main applicant and my wife is there.
Thanks

A sponsor that cannot meet the Poverty guidelines is useless to you. So – all you need is one sponsor who does meet the guidelines. Having two sponsors that neither one meets the guidelines is pointless.

Hi Simon,
Did you see the recent numbers at DVcharts?
EU Issued number is around 10k and ready is 9k. Do you think DOS will send a stop notification because of quota?
Due to some papers I could not start my AOS yet, and planning to send it next week. I am from EU. Do you think the quota will be filled soon? Am I too late?
April 23, 2023 at 12:19
You are not too late, but do it soon.
The 9K ready cases won’t all show up for interviews, won’t all be approved and so on, so no – we are not near the end for EU or any region.
