DV interview questions
This question comes up often – what are the typical DV interview questions? People are nervous about the interview as if they are going to be asked some really difficult questions or be held for an hour being questioned like a prisoner!!!! I have known people who want to prepare and practice their answers to all possible questions – just to be safe!
Well RELAX! The interview is usually a complete anticlimax. In a typical Embassy appointment there will be two or three stages. It isn’t always like this, but this will give an idea.
First you will be called to a window and asked to present some minimum documentation (Passports, birth certs etc). You will be asked to pay for the fee ($330) and that might be at a cashiers window.
Then you will be called for the actual interview which will typically last a very few minutes – sometimes less than 2 minutes!
The CO will look at your paperwork, and may request additional documents. They then may ask general questions such as:-
“Where did you study?”
“What work do you normally do?”
“Where will you live in the USA?”
“Who will you live with in the USA?”
“What is your relationship with the people you will live with?”
For most people that is the most that will be asked – and they are not looking to trick you or catch you out. If something needs more explanation or documentation they may go into that – but again it isn’t normally in depth. If you have recently married, you can expect some questions about your marriage (where you met, what trips you have taken together and so on).
Obviously the best answers are the most real/honest answers. Don’t try and impress the CO or say what you think they want to hear. As long as you meet the requirements and have followed the instructions the visa will be approved!!!

britsimon please i need help if you know, i am somali dv2016 winner which allow somali educations b/c i have degree level of education but its somali what embassy you know that somali education can have interviews
September 13, 2015 at 22:37
Education levels in Somalia have been difficult to prove in the past. I am not sure if that has improved. There is a lot of latitude given for Somali entrants, but obviously you must strive for the best documentation you can provide.

Hi Britt..Am a 2015 winner. I lived in London doing my master’s degree but from Sierra Leone. I had my interview on the 5th August at the consulate, everything was fine except that I need to present a police certificate from Sierra Leone which I did and send on the 11 August. My worries now is its been more than a month and each time I checked ceac update it’s show my case is under administrative processing. .am getting worried as we almost approaching sept 30 which marks the end of my application. Is there any advice u can give as am really stress out
September 15, 2015 at 11:01
If you are sure they received the certificate, all you can do is wait.
September 19, 2015 at 09:33
Dear Simon,
Thanks for your blog, very helpful.
I am a 2016 DV winner and have submitted my DS 260 together with my dependants on 1st July 2015. I am from Turkey and my case no is 2016EU00023XXX. Can you help me with:
1) When do you think I will receive the email from KCC for an interview?
2) When would they schedule the interview?
3) How long of a window will I have after the interview (hoping we are granted the visa) to enter to US? I read around 6 months? This is particularly critical for job and schooling arrangements.
4) I am traveling heavily due to my job, so can I leave the US freely for business and come back after the first arrival to take up residency?
Many thanks
HD

September 28, 2015 at 17:22
Hi Britsimon!
I would like to ask,if there is any possibility they might wanna see working contracts during the interview? And also, living aboard for more then 1 year, I need to have the police certificate. How old should it be? Can it be still from the time I was aboard with my old address I was living at?
Cheers!
September 28, 2015 at 17:54
They might ask to see working contracts IF you are qualifying based on working experience, otherwise, no.
The police report should ideally be more recent – but will of course cover the period you were at the old address.

September 30, 2015 at 15:01
You are seeing your 1NL in the ESC site – is that what you are saying???? OK so then you have not be scheduled for an interview yet. That depends on when your submitted your DS260 and your case number.
October 1, 2015 at 07:45
Hey Brit I am not be scheduled for an interview. My Q is
1. how can i know my interview day if is the web sight address please locate me the link
October 2, 2015 at 07:17
pls respond Brit
October 2, 2015 at 18:44
I think I have answered your questions. If there is something else, restate the question so it is clear, and once we are talking keep your questions on the same thread so I can follow the conversation – otherwise I have to search through thousands of questions to see what you might be expecting – and honestly – I don’t have time to do that. So – make it simple for me if you want a reply.
October 2, 2015 at 18:19
Hi Simon, I follow your blog and your fb page, thank you for sharing your information. I wanted to ask you in your experience what do you know about reescheduling your appointment for dv lottery? I happen to have my interview on oct 15 at the Embassy in Venezuela but I still don´t have all my documentation ready due to burocracy issues… Do I lose my chance of being granted the green card for reescheduling??
October 2, 2015 at 18:23
It is very unwise to reschedule. It is better to attend the interview with missing papers – if those papers are required you will be put on AP until you provide them. That is a much faster/safer solution.
October 2, 2015 at 18:42
thank you Simon you are always so helpfull! I will take your advice.
October 4, 2015 at 00:09
Why you talk about “Provide an Affidavit of Support from an eligible person from the USA.
Further more if you are single play as a single person”? I’ve never read anything about that

Hi Brit. My wife is a 2016 DV winner, case in 26000. During the time she was playing, she was not marry. So she played single. After few months, she got marry to me and I have a 17 years old step daughter attending school in the country next to my country that I live in. I really want to include her but I don’t have the financial strength to do so at this moment. What do I do to help her benefit from this DV program ? Should I include her name on the DS 260 form even though she is not present ? Or is there any means that I can help her if we are successful in this program ? Because she really need my help for her betterment in life pls advise me before I sent my DS 260 form.
October 4, 2015 at 17:29
You must list her (as must your wife) on your DS260. However, if you cannot apply for the GC for her now you do not complete a DS260 for the child. Once you are living in the USA, you will be able to sponsor her – although that will take a long time and cost more money.
October 4, 2015 at 22:14
Please explain to me with clarity and I don’t even know that procedure. What is the GC mean ? What do you mean by list her ( as must your wife ) on the DS 260 form ? Please explain with clearity for me.
October 5, 2015 at 00:11
Click the link above for DV lottery guide. It seems like you have read nothing whatsoever, and I have already posted ALOT of information you could read.
October 4, 2015 at 19:01
thanks brit
but i will like to ask for your help in my issues now
1. i play the lottery 2012 and i got selected 2016 which i was not the one who did online but done by an agent here in ghana west africa,,,,and they are requesting for an amount of money before they will submit for the interview ..
2.my case number `is 2016AF00004XXX ,And am confuse ,if my interview will come or not please help me out and when will get my interview date ?
3.my name which i use to play the lottery are three and my birth certificate is also three but on my schoool certi is two …how can i go about that ??
October 5, 2015 at 00:07
1. If they used your entry details from 2012 there is a high chance of denial because of some facts wrong, or photo being too old. This chance is particularly high if you are interviewing in Ghana. It is a great shame you trusted some agent that can now blackmail you!
2. YOU WILL GET A DATE, YES – BUT only if you submit your DS260.
3. That is another factor that could lead to denial – especially in combination with other inaccuracies.
October 5, 2015 at 07:16
thanks brit
1.so what do you thnank , can i go ahead to submit it for the interview because i have not yet submit it yet…because they are damanding for the money before they will submit it for further process ,,
2.And if i submit now , when will i get my interview date …my case is 2016AF00004xxx…
please help am confuse….
October 5, 2015 at 16:35
1. Up to you whether you pay them or not. Do you think your information is accurate???
2. Yes you would get an interview date.
October 5, 2015 at 19:51
Dear Brit,
I received an I-138 by a friend as an official sponsor, but instead am looking to go to a close relative being her as a host only. In your opinion what should i do in the interview if they ask me where you I intend to live in USA.
Thank you for your prompt response.
October 5, 2015 at 20:01
Tell them the truth!
October 5, 2015 at 20:20
Thank you!
October 5, 2015 at 21:46
thanks brit
so when do you think, i will get my interview appointment , if i submit today ?
2.And how long will it take before i will get my interview date ?
October 5, 2015 at 22:47
It will take a few months for the DS260 to be processed….
October 6, 2015 at 06:27
Dear Brit am the winner of DV 2016 i completed the DS 260 before 3 month how can i know my interview day exactly ??? if is there a link please attach.
October 6, 2015 at 14:32
Hello BritSimon
The 2012 dv-lottery had +-100 000 selected entrants. The 2016 dv-lottery has +-91 000 selected entrants. My question is could I use the visa bulletins from 2012 as a comparison or guide line for the 2016 interview months. I Only looked at Africa figures so far for October and November.
Thank you for your time.
Regards.
October 6, 2015 at 21:03
Forget DV2012 – it is an anomaly. There was a major screwup that year that caused them to publish winners, and after a few days they cancelled those wins, and had a redraw. Because many people did not get to find out they were selected in the redraw (because they had already checked in the first few days) they struggled to give away the visas and only managed to issue 35k visas globally. So no, don’t consider that year at all.
October 8, 2015 at 19:09
Hi brit
i lived a year and a half out of my country cameroon now back for my interview. will i need a police record from that country even though it is stated optional in the US embassy in cameroon
October 8, 2015 at 20:02
You normally need a police cert for a foreign country where you have lived for 12 months or more.
October 8, 2015 at 19:54
Am just back 2 weeks ago and its not stated on the embassy requirement to stampt any document at the any ministry
October 10, 2015 at 15:34
Dear Brit, my question is I was denied us visiting visa three times and now I am a winner of DVLottery 2015. Will my denial affect my interview?
October 10, 2015 at 16:40
Hopefully you mean DV2016 since DV2015 is over.
People get refused tourist visas often because they fail to show they have ties to their home country so they won’t try and stay in the USA. DV is an immigrant visa – so that concern does not matter. If you were refused for other reasons those reasons might come up again.
October 13, 2015 at 01:37
Hi Mr Brit please am a winner of dv 2015 which my visa has already been granted but i wish to ask if there is any advantage/benefits for dv immigrants when we get to the United State
October 13, 2015 at 04:45
No, there is no special help for immigrants and one aspect of your interview should have been to assess how you would look after yourself.
October 13, 2015 at 10:43
Thank you sir but i mean something like grand from the government such as may be assist u in paying part of your school fees and might be any other thing. Sir am sorry to ask but its because some persons in the state keep telling me that.
October 13, 2015 at 13:44
The basic concept of the DV lottery is that you get a Green Card but no support. You have to support yourself.
October 14, 2015 at 01:53
okay thanks for the clarification sir
October 16, 2015 at 16:16
Please I realised that all comments from Africa has their confirmation number stating the year of registration and then followed by AFXXXXXXXXX but I just registered for 2017 and I have my confirmation number as 201721ZBYXXXXXXXX……could that be a problem?
October 16, 2015 at 17:10
Your code is an entry code. IF you get selected you are given the other type of number. The other people are already selected (in earlier lotteries)
October 16, 2015 at 16:59
Hi Brit,
This was useful information for me. I was wondering: should I mention I will live with my boyfriend when I go to the US, or will that work against me? (my F visa was once denied because I mentioned my relationship)
October 16, 2015 at 17:09
What worked against you for the F1 visa is irrelevant for the DV case. No issue.
October 17, 2015 at 07:27
HI BRIT,IAM A WINNER OF DV 2016. MY PROBLEM IS MY NAME I PLAY WITH IS JAMES.. BENEDICT.SOLUNUM . PAYE JR. BUT SCHOOL DOCUMENT I HAVE J. BENEDICT. S .PAYE JR
IS THERE PROBLEM USING ENETIAL ON MY DOCUMENTS. And then my J was omitted from my High school certif icate, will there be a problem ? My case number is Af 16***, around when will i be schedule for interview.
October 17, 2015 at 14:53
No that should not be a problem. Your legal name is on your passport/birth cert.
October 18, 2015 at 08:18
my interviw date is Nov.3 i have one question to you my date of finishing 12 grade and date of ds260 what i fill it has a gap of 6 years is there any thing at the time of interviw am so scared pls tell me same thing about this.
October 18, 2015 at 15:17
You mean the dates are wrong in the DS260?
October 18, 2015 at 10:52
Hi Brit, I was just wondering if you could help clarify some stuff:
I’m currently a permanent resident in Singapore and my parents are hell bent on making me convert as a citizen here but I’ve had plans to move to the US years ago (let’s just say my relationship with them isn’t the best). I fulfil all the criteria but I just wanna know what would happen if I really do become a citizen and then subsequently apply for the DV lottery? Would this make it more difficult for me IF I do get selected?
My only other option is wait till I graduate from college and go through the work visa process. One of the questions you mentioned could be asked in the interview includes “who will you live in the US”. What if I was going there literally alone and I’m gonna have to find my own place? Will my answers affect anything at all? I don’t believe I’ll have problems finding a job as I’ll be graduating with a CS degree but I definitely have intentions of pursuing higher education which is one of the factors motivating me to move over.
October 18, 2015 at 15:16
Your nationality at the time of application makes no difference at all. Eligibility is based on place of birth.
October 19, 2015 at 01:57
Thanks for replying, but wouldn’t it look odd if I converted to a Singaporean citizen and then tried to apply for dv lottery for the US? Both my country of birth and nationality are eligible. I was born in Malaysia.
October 19, 2015 at 01:59
It does not matter.
October 18, 2015 at 15:52

October 18, 2015 at 16:51
am confused because on my DS260 how it should be updated?
Course of Study: GCE Ordinary Level
Degree , Diploma or Certificate received ???
October 18, 2015 at 18:11
GCE is a certificate.
Are you sure GCE O level meets the requirements in your country?

Dear Mr. Brit Simon,
I am posting this comment from Afghanistan, and iam one of the winners of DV 2016, my case number starts from 2016AS0000XXXX and my interview has been scheduled on november 2015, there are some points which i am not sure if you could help me.
1. I have 12 class graduation school certificate and i have graduated from a private university in Kabul capital of Afghanistan from BBA but not finished my thesis and i got a confirmation letter which certifies that i was enrolled and studies four year in that univesity. DO THE US EMBASSY ACCEPTS THAT LETTER.?
2. How much money do i need to have or to tell during my interview. DO THYE ASK THIS OR NOT. the addres i mentioned in my DS260 is my Aunt’s Daughter, she is livIng in States for more 5 years she can help me there as well. We are 5 in my family.
Thanks and appreciate your help.
October 21, 2015 at 13:32
1. The letter for an incomplete degree is not very useful. However, the requirement is the 12 years of education – that qualified you to attend University – so focus on that proof.

Dear Nawid Haidari,
I am an Afghan DV lottery winner for 2017. I kindly need some information about your personal experience of the interview and about your case after the interiew? Waiting for your kind reply. my email is [email protected]
October 26, 2015 at 12:32
Hello Brit i just want to ask few questions
1. i am a DV 2016 winner and my number is AF21xxx i completed filling the D-260 in the last week of October when do you think will be my interview
2. after completion of the form i realized that i didnt put enough info is there any way i will be able to add or remove
3. how long do i have if i get my visa to go to US and is there any possible time frame that i can be able to come back and finalize family issue
October 26, 2015 at 13:45
1. The form takes around 3 months to process and then interviews could be 2 months after that IF you are current. So – Around April ish
2. Yes you can email KCC to unlock your form.
3. You will have up to 6 months to enter the USA and you can then leave for up to 12 months to come home to finalize things…
October 29, 2015 at 10:33
Hi Brit…
My wife is the principal winner and currently we r due for interview on the 4th of November, 2015. Could the pregnancy be a blockade?
Is there a possibility that mu unborn child would have the opportunity to be given the Visa? Be informed that my wife is expecting any day from today
October 29, 2015 at 18:38
No issues with the pregnancy and yes the child will get a visa. The process for that depends on timing of the birth and interview. Just talk it through at the interview…
October 31, 2015 at 17:53
Hi britsimon I thank you so much for this job helpfull…
So I submited my DS260 yesterday then I wanna know what is the next step…thx again for your advice
October 31, 2015 at 23:32
You just have to wait for them to process your DS260 (takes 3 to 4 months) and then for your case to be current. Once BOTH are true – they will schedule your interview.
November 1, 2015 at 12:42
Hi, I have a casenumber which will be current in December 2015. I filled in the 260 form end of august.
Will I receive an invitation automatically in december or should I take contact? Will it surely be in december or might it actually only come later? (should I be worried if I don’t hear anything in december)
We are expecting a baby in february. If we get the GC in Dec, how can we make sure he’ll get a GC too?
Thanks!
November 1, 2015 at 17:45
Your DS260 was submitted too late for a December interview. It will still be processing. Once it is completed you will be scheduled for an interview – you don’t need to do anything other than wait for the email, but that won’t arrive until the end of December (for a February interview).
As soon as the baby is born, unlock the DS260 by emailing KCC. You will need to complete a DS260 for the baby and change your own DS260s to add the child. You will also need a birth cert and a passport for the baby by the time of the interview – so move on that immediately upon the birth.
November 1, 2015 at 19:28
Thanks very much for your quick response. Might actually be a good thing to only fill in the 260 end august as now we have the chance (possibly) to add the new baby details.
Just to be sure, if I unlock the DS260 a couple of weeks before the then already scheduled interview, will that not delay or cancel my interview? Do you have an idea on how long it currently takes to unlock the DS 260? TIA
November 2, 2015 at 00:40
Unlocking takes a couple of days to two weeks. Unlocking, and leaving it unlocked, will delay scheduling – but as you say, since you delayed things anyway you would be better off delaying a little more to make sure the baby can be added simply.
December 28, 2015 at 16:04
Hi Simon,
My casenr is current this month. I locked our DS260’s end august.
As my wife will give birth around 9 feb I unlocked our DS260’s early this month and kept them unlocked, with the idea to only lock them again after the new baby is born, to be able to add him from the beginning.
Just now, even though our DS260’s are still unlocked I received an interview invite for 4 feb. Quite a bad timing as there is a very big chance my wife will give birth around that date.
Do you know how it’s possible that we’re invited despite having our forms unlocked? Do you know if they could be open to reschedule?
Thanks!
December 28, 2015 at 23:15
They will schedule the case IF the principal selectee is locked. I would guess that is what happened – you unlocked one, but not the principal.
The best thing you can do now is contact the embassy and explain. In reality you will still be able to take your baby to the USA of course. When people have a baby after the interview but before the first entry into the USA, there is a process followed at the POE (airport). You take the baby, with a passport and birth cert and the child will be processed for a GC in the USA. It is very simple AND you save the interview/medical fees for the baby!
December 29, 2015 at 07:29
Hi Simon, I’ve request to unlock for all 3 of us. Mine says “incomplete” right now and the other 2 say “re-opened”. I can still access and change info so definitely not locked. I can send you a print screen if it would help you advise people in the future.
In any case I’ll call the embassy today and try to reschedule. I like the idea of not having to pay the fee for the unborn baby, but with a delivery date on the 9th the risk is too big that my wife can’t make it to the interview, should the baby be born early.
December 29, 2015 at 16:12
That sounds very odd. Good luck in re-arranging, I hope that goes well for you.
November 8, 2015 at 21:25
Hi brit please help
1)if for example i go for my medicals which am still about to and the physician discovers you are sick would he prescribe drugs dat u would take or proovide it for u
2)Here in cameroon am not sure if by de time of my interview our ADVANCED LEVEL CERT would be out .Just wanted to know if i can take along with me my result slip which shows i have completed my high school.
3)Lastly i haven’t gotten my 2nl yet my cn 2016af946 submitted ds260 on Sep 3rd
Thanks as u reply
November 8, 2015 at 22:05
1. It is an examination/report. The physician would not normally expect to give treatment.
2. I don’t know how the embassy would treat that.
3. You have some months to wait because of your late submission.
November 9, 2015 at 10:27
Thanks u uncle simon but i told dat it usually take 3 months from de day of submitx and mine is already 2 months and a week i dont know if i would recieve my 2nl dis december for a January interview cus my friends are already gox am scared
November 9, 2015 at 20:20
DS260 is taking 3 to 4 months to process.
November 12, 2015 at 18:40
Hi BritSimon, if i was selected for DV lottery, at time of interview which will be a year or longer after DV registration, should i bring the same photos that were submitted in the lottery or should i bring different/new photos? Specifically if i feel that i will look alittle different because i am trying to lose weight, plus my look changes every year for weight gain/loss reasons also i shape my eyebrows differently everytime. Do u think theh will require to provide the old photos or should i bring updated ones?
Thanks alot
November 12, 2015 at 19:59
If you are selected, your interview will be between 1 year and 2 years after the original entry – so yes they instruct you to bring updated photos.
November 14, 2015 at 22:49
Hello Brit i hope and i know dat i am de 1st to wish u MERRY X-MAS in advance….
Does datean wen u get to U.S all wat de gov’t do is to issue u A G.C and else?
I taught they usually help u secire a job.
Wen uapply im ds260 as a student,is it an obligatory u must go yo school?
November 14, 2015 at 23:38
The government will not help with finding a job, home or anything. You must have enough money to support yourself and find a job.
November 15, 2015 at 05:02
Dear Brit,
I had a problem in filling given names In the DS260 application 2016 . The given space was not sufficient to type, since my other names are too long because of that i stated the name initials in the given space but i mentioned my full name in the full name tittle. my questions are as follows,
1). Will it be a problem in the interview. I have documents to prove my name including the passport.
2). Do the CO will give us a chance to explain about the name difference.
Seeking your guidance.

Section 212(a)(5)(a) A careful assessment of your work experience and your education shows that you do not have the experience required to work or education to qualify for the Diversity Visa program.
I got this paper form the embassy on 24-11-2015 can i do anything after this please?
November 25, 2015 at 21:58
No. There is no appeal process. Do you feel the decision was incorrect? Do you meet the requirements?
November 27, 2015 at 10:25
yes,i feel cause i am from Albania but since i was 2 years old i moved from albania to greece and i have studied there in a technical school for cooling, and i won the lottery last year and i had all my papers done and they just said to me that school you have finished it doesnt consist to the us embassy, why please cause with that school in Greece u can study anything u want after u finish…
November 27, 2015 at 17:55
Ahh ok. THe Albanian embassy believes some of the technical schools in Albania are vocational, and therefore do not meet the requirements. There have been other denials for the same reason. THere is nothing you can do.

You cannot unlock to correct now because your case is scheduled. At the interview you can mention the mistake.

Bring it up yourself.
December 4, 2015 at 16:10
No I will not email or post possible questions. The whole point of this article was to point out the questions are trivial and can be answered with no preparation. Your answers should be natural, not rehearsed. Furthermore, I have posted an interview experience article (use the search feature) which has many interview accounts from various embassies. Read those.
