Hi
I have one question for passport.
My sister has passport but it will be expired in March 2020. Currently she is so busy with her school and no time to renew her passport. Is that possible to enter with current passport?
I check at Website but they don’t mention about passport duration.
Thanks
I am 2018 winner and currently at NY. I read a lot your post and it helped me a lot during my time.
Thank you so much.
October 10, 2019 at 02:44
Your sister can use the current passport
October 9, 2019 at 12:56
Dear sir,
I had submitted the dvlottery for 2021 successfully . but after submitted the entry ,I knew that I had written my previous passport number and expire date in the entry form, which I had lost 1 year ago. After losing previous one I made new and using now.It was my great mistake. Will this cause reject for achieve the visa if I was selected?hearing towards your kindly reply.
October 10, 2019 at 02:11
Posibly. We don’t know how they will handle the passports yet as this is the first year.
October 9, 2019 at 04:46
I have a passport that expires on July 2020. Will this be sufficient?
October 9, 2019 at 04:54
Yes
October 9, 2019 at 03:46
@Simon, A very nice job you did on this without charging for it. I have watched most your videos on the application process and I have all the requirements but my country is not eligible this year.
Maybe next year own will favour me. Wishing you all here success
October 9, 2019 at 03:49

Hi Simon,
In passport details section of DV2021, we are asked to enter “Country/Authority of Issuance”. I was born in Malaysia and hold a Malaysian passport. But my passport was issued by the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore. In my passport, it is stated “Issuing Office: Singapore”. So do I enter “Malaysia” or “Singapore” for “Country/Authority of Issuance” in my DV2021 application?
Thank you for your help.
October 9, 2019 at 03:25
Malaysia
October 26, 2019 at 00:03
Hi Brit
If i put “Country/Authority of Issuance” Singapore, is that effect my application?
October 26, 2019 at 03:09
I doubt that it will cause a problem.
October 8, 2019 at 15:02
Hello Simon, I am getting married on December. can I enter my fiencee’s name on the form of diversity program US immigration?
October 9, 2019 at 03:22
No. You are not yet married. You can both enter, and if either win, you both process together.
October 8, 2019 at 00:11
Hi Simon,
(1) can you tell me if its possible for a foreign national from his/her Country such as Guinea and win DV in other Country such as Kenya but on a tourist visa be qualify to sat for interview in Kenya?
(2) Its possible for the same foreign national to get police certificate from those Countries his/her travel to before?
(3)Or if such individual get the police certificate from their home Country which they was born will that be enough if the person is the accompany to the principle applicant for DV2020?
Best regard,
Grace
October 8, 2019 at 05:30
1. Yes
2. Possibly.
3. NO =- each adult needs all the police certs according to the instructions.
October 7, 2019 at 23:06
hey there. i was born in northern cyprus but due to the political issues (requires both parents to be born in cyprus before 1974) i dont have an EU passport rather have TRNC and Turkish passports. i read the ” Explanation of Country of Eligibility” and saw all the special administrated places except Northern Cyprus. So did i get it right that im choosing birth place Cyprus (NC isnt included) and the country from which I am claiming eligibility is Turkey? there was a list i saw few months back but cannot find it now showed the percentage of how many people applied and won from that country and i was willing to apply from Cyprus.
October 8, 2019 at 05:18
Cyprus.
October 7, 2019 at 21:43
I have been trying to submit my application every day from the day one. On three different laptops, 3 different phones and every possible internet browser it ends the same way:
The requested URL was rejected please consult with your administrator.
I have noticed that someone from Nepal that lives currently in South Korea had the same problem. South Korea is not eligible to apply. May that be the reason why the URL was rejected?
I am from country that is eligible to apply but this month I am travelling through the country that is NOT eligible. Perhaps the application URL is blocked in countries that are NOT eligible?
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
B

Hi Simon
I am currently in the USA on J1 visa and my wife is J2.
I am a medical doctor and therefore we have a two year home medical residency rule applied on us because of J1.
This means that we have to go back my home country for two years when our J1/2 visa expires.
The only other way out of this home residency requirement is to get a waiver by doing 3 years of job in underserved area in US. This can be only done after doing a medical residency (in my case).
Now, in case my wife applies and wins the DV lottery, I am not sure if two year home residency rule will be a hindrance in the process. Can you please confirm?
October 8, 2019 at 04:41
You would need the waiver.
October 7, 2019 at 12:28

Hello brit sir, thankyou for the every detailed information. I have a question to ask. i am a nepalese citizen but currently i am residing in bangladesh for study purpose. So my question is what should i fill in the form where it is asked for current address, nepal or bangladesh.. i am confused as bangladesh is not valid country to apply for edv.. please reply
October 6, 2019 at 16:01
Current address. Wherever that is.
October 5, 2019 at 14:11
Hey Brit, this is a question on the photo to use during the application. Would they accept a photo with the hair spilling above the green line?As an African our hair is kinky and goes up and I’m wondering whether I would need to straighten it up for the picture. Thank you for not thinking this is stupid.
October 5, 2019 at 15:13
The hair can be outside the lines, yes.
October 5, 2019 at 04:17
What do you think is the reason this year the passport was also requested? will we have a more detailed explanation for you next? Thank you
October 5, 2019 at 04:43
I already explained that in earlier posts. Please read the archives.
October 4, 2019 at 22:48
Hi Bri. I submitted my dv 2021, but I forget to print the confirmation up or to keep the record and my page is now closed, I need your help how can I get it back?
October 4, 2019 at 23:28
In May you will be able to find it – not before then.
October 4, 2019 at 22:42
Dear Britsimon,
Thank you a lot for your videos and your good work. I need your opinion about this: A friend of mine filled in the application form the same name of the city
that she lives and the same for the district. She filled Athens in the district instead of Attica. She find out when I show her your video about entering the dv lottery…Could be this a reason for disqualification??
October 4, 2019 at 23:28
No
October 4, 2019 at 19:36
Hi Brit,
I have a Somalian all-African passport that looks like this – https://www.cnn.com/2016/07/05/africa/african-union-passport/index.html
Can I enter this passport on my entry?
October 4, 2019 at 23:23
If it is an international passport – yes.
October 5, 2019 at 11:37
How do you define international? This passport was issued by an international organization. It also allows visa-free travel between all African countries, and 54 of them are foreign countries for myself. Is it enough to be considered international? On the downside, it does not allow travelling to US. So, can I enter this passport?
October 5, 2019 at 14:53
I don’t know. If you don’t have a proper passport, use that, but you may have problems if selected. To avoid problems use a proper passport.
October 4, 2019 at 14:38
Hi Brits.
I had a tourist visa and my kids (14/12).
We entered the states 4 times in 2018 cause i revistered the kids in school.
When we came to enter again. They cancelled our visa on the boarder and we got deported.
We were not banned .
We were given a paper to apply for a different visa as soon as we arrive to our resident country in Kuwait.
Will that disqualify us if we apply to the lottery.
Will it differ if we apply with different passoprts or it wont differ as our finger prints are in the system.
Will it differ if my husband applys in the lottery and adds us.
Thanks in advance for your help.
October 4, 2019 at 22:31
I cannot guess what they have done on your record – so I have no way to guess the impact.
October 4, 2019 at 13:15
Good Day Brit Simon,
Thanks so much for the education you always provide on the DV lottery every year, this is my question; I am married and both of us do have passport including our children, in filling out the form are we going to submit two entries or only one entry? In the previous years when we are filling out the form we normally fill out two form where i will serve as prime applicant ant the other she serve as prime applicant.
October 4, 2019 at 22:28
One each per adult.
October 4, 2019 at 11:57
Hi Brit,
if I worked abroad for less than 6 months, do I have to apply for judicial certificates to that country? or under 6 months should not be requested? thanks
October 4, 2019 at 22:25
Have you read the instructions?
October 5, 2019 at 05:54
Yes Brit,
if I understand correctly, I would like your confirmation:
1-from the police authorities of the applicant’s country of current residence if the applicant has resided there for at least six months after attaining the age of sixteen; (I NEED POLICE CERTIFICATE, is my country)
2-from the police authorities of all other countries, except the United States, where the applicant has resided for at least one year after attaining the age of sixteen;(in my case,I DON’T NEED POLICE CERTIFICATE, because I worked in other countries for up to 8 months)
3- from the police authorities of any country where the applicant had been arrested for any reason, regardless of how long he or she lived there.(I was not arrested, DON’T NEED POLICE CERTIFICATE).
Is correct? Thanks Brit!
October 5, 2019 at 14:06

Hi BritSimon,
I cropped out my background cleanly (professionally) such that it didn’t affect my image especially my hair and neck since I struggled a bit to get a clean white or off white background. Would the digital image still pass for a good one to meet that specific requirement of not cropping out the background?
October 4, 2019 at 20:32
Possibly. It depends how un-obvious it is.
October 5, 2019 at 13:35
Well, I couldn’t risk it. Scrapped it. Got a better unedited one. Thanks.

October 3, 2019 at 23:15
Greetings.
I have double nationality. I was born and raised in Greece, but also have a Swiss nationality.
So as far nativity goes, I am Greek. All my paperwork comes from the Greek Government.
but currently I do not have a valid Greek passport. I do have a valid Swiss passport though.
And it so happens that I live in France, and issuing a passport through the consulate may take up to 3 months.
To the point:
Does it just have to be a valid Passport. Or it has to be a valid passport from the (native) country where all the paperwork is going to come from (in case of selection)?
Thank you for your time!
October 4, 2019 at 04:36
Just a valid, unexpired passport. Any country.
October 3, 2019 at 21:48
Hi Simon,
I was born in a different country that its also eligible for DV, but don’t have that current passport anymore since I left my born country long time ago..Can I use my “new” passport that I received through my spouse? All my kids are also the same nationality. What should i put?
Thanks
October 3, 2019 at 21:52
Yes.
Answer truthfully.
October 3, 2019 at 23:07

Hi Brit, I have a son that has just turn 16, depending on when the interview will be for DV21, he will be just about 18 or 18 and about to finish off his 12 years of education. By about 2 months short. He will definitely be doing his University in USA. Should he apply separately himself for DV2021. Thanks.
October 3, 2019 at 20:50
He can do that AND be on yours too.
October 6, 2019 at 04:28
Thanks for your reply Brit. What happens if he goes to the interview and still short of 2 – 4 months from getting his 12 years education? He will definitely finish his 12 years education come 18 yrs old
October 6, 2019 at 15:34
The requirement is not “having attended school for 12 years”. it is a matter of achieving certain results that enable entry to University.
So he must delay interview until he meets that requirement.
October 3, 2019 at 10:50
Hi Simon,
My question is regarding marital status. I divorced my husband in 2010. I have not re-married since then. Should I put my marital status as unmarried or divorced?
Many thanks for all of your advice and information.
October 3, 2019 at 16:10
Divorced. You will need divorce documentation at the interview.
October 3, 2019 at 08:06
Helloo Brit,
Mu Friend’s passeport will expire in october 2020. Meaning, even if he gets selected, he won’t use it anyway for a 2021 DV visa.
Can he still enter the lottery with it and get a new one after (hopefully) winning?.
Or should he try to get a new one before entering the lottery.
October 3, 2019 at 15:51
Yes, as long as it is unexpired now.

October 3, 2019 at 04:19
Yep.
October 2, 2019 at 22:54
I also think you cannot choose what exactly wife you could bring if you have several. Because you marriage made when you already were married is not valid for the purpose of immigrating to US even if it is valid in your country. So in any case if you have several wives, only one of them or no one qualifies under your valid spouse
October 3, 2019 at 04:18
I don’t understand what you think is the difference between what you said and what I said.
October 3, 2019 at 09:26
The point is you cannot choose which wife you go with, everything is predefined by US law. For instance,
example 1. You marry A, then you marry B, then you marry C. Marriages with B and C are not valid for immigration because you were married when you made them. So, in this case your only spouse is A, and you have to include this spouse
example 2. You marry A, then you marry B, then you divorce A, then you marry C. Marriages with B and C are not valid for immigration because you were married when you made them. But divorce with A is valid. So, you are not married, abd cannot include any spouse.
In any case, there is no choice.
October 3, 2019 at 15:56
I FULLY understand the point and did not need the explanation. But again, you are reading from “the book”. I am talking about REAL WORLD examples that I have seen processed.
October 3, 2019 at 15:57
I should add – this is my 6th year of doing this – specifically DV lottery.
October 2, 2019 at 22:48
I think your understanding is wrong. If you are a refugee, that does not necessarily mean your are stateless. You could be a national of one country and be a refugee in another one, unless you lost your citizenship. However, if you have an unexpired refugee travel document, it qualifies under your passport. Refugee Travel Document from a valid authority is a passport in terms of US law. So, in that case you have a choice what to enter – your passport or your refugee travel document.
October 3, 2019 at 04:16
The point is – none of us can be sure.
https://youtu.be/CiGh0nkuQ6k
October 3, 2019 at 09:20
We are in fact sure.
https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?req=granuleid%3AUSC-prelim-title8-section1101&num=0&edition=prelim
(30) The term “passport” means any travel document issued by competent authority showing the bearer’s origin, identity, and nationality if any, which is valid for the admission of the bearer into a foreign country.
Refugee travel document is a valid passport in terms of the law.
October 3, 2019 at 15:54
Again, you are missing the point. The question is how it will be implemented in the lottery. We don’t know. Not you, not I, and I suspect it will vary by embassy/CO.
October 2, 2019 at 21:28
Hello. I have a high school diploma and a National diploma Electrical Engineering from South Africa. What qualification should I choose?

Hi I’m a Kenyan with an East African passport and I learned that during this year’s lottery, one should be a holder of a valid passport
Do I need to apply for the ordinary passport or should I enter the East African passport number in my dv application
Please help?
I’m confused
October 3, 2019 at 20:58
I don’t know passport differences in your country. You need an international passport.
October 3, 2019 at 21:47
The EA passport allows one to to travel across the 6 member states; Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi & S Sudan
Can it be considered international?
October 3, 2019 at 21:53
Probably not.
October 10, 2019 at 00:55
Hii Dear Brit…I’m at U.S & I filled DV 2021 for someone leaving out of U.S later I realize the photo is used was having earring……Does this meet the requirement?
October 10, 2019 at 04:45
Read the photo requirements page.
October 5, 2019 at 17:50
The light blue EA passport is ok, I won n came with it.
October 7, 2019 at 11:55
Wow I very thankful for your comment
I had decided to apply for the ordinary 32 page passport but I was nervous
Obtaining a passport in Kenya can be a hectic process due to the corrupt officials
I was worried it’d take months before I could get one thus being unable to enter this years lottery
