Hello Simon,
Thanks for offering help on this subject.
My name is Oubai and I live in Dubai.
I won the DV visa yesterday. I read the documentation of the process on https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/immigrate/diversity-visa/if-you-are-selected/confirm-your-qualifications.html and i have good understanding of all documents that I need to prepare, but I’m a little confused about some points regarding the work experience / education qualification because I qualify on both; however, there is still some issue.
I have 13 years of experience in Digital Program Management and Business Analysis, and I hold an Associate degree from a US university, while I will obtain my bachelor soon.
Here are my questions:
1- Will the Associate alone qualify me from education perspective. Of course I also have high-school translated to English which I can bring to the interview.
2- I checked the O’Net database and two position can match my experience, the Information Project Manager and Information System Analyst and they are both from zone 4 with SVP 7 to 8.
Throughout my experience, my position titles were related to Project Management but also I was doing the tasks of Information System / Business Analyst as part of my job. The problem that according to the O’Net, the Project Manager position requires minimum of Bachelor Degree, which I don’t have when the Information System Analyst doesn’t require more than an Associate Degree.
I also have employment letter from each employer that I worked with with description to what I was doing, and the description covers the tasks of both roles but little more to the Business Analyst role.
In this case, what do you suggest that I should fill in the DS 260 and should I seek to prove both and explain at the interview that my roles included the work of System Analyst so the officer understands that the Associate is sufficient.
3- One last thing, starting from Jan 2017, I started my own business which is in the same category of digital and internet, so I’m the CEO but it is a startup business for a new digital product that I invented. Do you think entering that in the DS 260 could affect negatively on my application or cause any kind of confusion, or would it support it?
Thank you
May 4, 2017 at 13:18
1. Yes
2. Forget work experience – education is enough.
3, It is no problem – tell the truth.

Thanks for the feedback Brit. Just to double check, in this case, I need to choose No for this question:
“Did this job require at least 2 years of training or experience?” at all Previous jobs that I add, correct?
And no description would be needed for what I did at each job.
May 4, 2017 at 21:34
Answer yes or no as appropriate. I don’t think they need a description.

Hello Simon
My wife was selected but we are not living in our home country and my passport expired as we are asylum seekers i can’t get a new passport. Are we going to get visa? What type of document Am I gonna need for application?
Thank you
May 4, 2017 at 13:24
You would need some sort of travel document. If there is NOTHING you can get – the US embassy could do something. So relax and go through the process.
May 4, 2017 at 13:29
Thank you
May 4, 2017 at 13:44
Brit so that means if the glitch is restored and initial status shows ”has not been selected”,you can recheck again.
But can you tell so far how many selectees have been selected for GHANA?I will appreciate it.
May 4, 2017 at 11:15
Hi,
Please could you inform me about deadline to fulfill the DS-260 form, because i don’t have passport’s for my child’s. It takes 3 week to get passport.
May 4, 2017 at 13:27
For 2018? You have a year or so. For DV2017, the window is closing.
May 4, 2017 at 10:19
Hey!
A won in lottery! Wohoo!
But, when I made the questionnaire, I add an old photo. It’s made in Dec’15. I never used it in any lottery.
Is it the problem for me? May I disqualified by this reason?
PS Sorry for my English:) I working on it))
May 4, 2017 at 13:40
The instructions said to use a recent photo. Old photos (not used in DV2017) is therefore a risk – but not certain disqualification. It is up to the judgement of the CO.

I have been selected for the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program for the fiscal year 2018 (October 1, 2017 to September 30, 2018). I have a question and would like you to help me in this regard,my wife was not pregnant before I entered the lottery but now she is pregnant and our second child will be born on Aug 2017, so could I add his name to the immigrant Visa or not.
Thank you,
Karim
May 4, 2017 at 13:41
Yes – once the baby is born – add a DS260 for the child and unlock yours to add the child. The child will be included.

Hello Simon,
Firstly thanks for the great info on here plus all that you do on the forums which linked me here.
Having read the spreadsheet, and forums, with OC21xx (mine) and OC20XX (partner) (we both got in first time), my understanding is to hold from doing the DS-260, correct?
I think its great that we even got a CS number, but considering they are both above the 2000’s, we aren’t getting our hopes up just yet.
Thanks
May 4, 2017 at 13:46
Yes you are both high. No need to rush to fill in the DS260. Once we are a few months past October, we will know more and you can submit then.

Hi brits
In DV2017 there was a second draw and all regions became current early. Does that mean the selectees were too small? And do you have any idea why will not be a second draw at Dv2108.
Regards
May 4, 2017 at 13:54
DV2018 is MUCH larger than DV2017 – so no second draw.

Hello brit , my 16 years old brother wants to apply for DV2019 , he is 10th grade , can he really apply ?
May 4, 2017 at 13:27
No

YOu would contact the new embassy – ask for permission to move the case to them – THEN contact Nairobi and ask them to move it.

Hey Brit,
great website! Thank you!
I tried submitting my DS-260 application and when I try to sign electronically I get the error message “The case number you entered does not match the case number that you entered at Sign In.”
Trust me, I triple and quadruple checked and it is the correct number. Also tried different browsers and devices. Do you think it might just take a couple of days until the system is ready or should I contact KCC?
Best and God bless you for your help here.
May 4, 2017 at 13:56
Fixed now.
May 4, 2017 at 23:38
Same issue persists. Does it have to do with the other issue you reported on? Should I just give it a few days before bugging the KCC guys and gals?
Thanks!!

Hi Simon. You are doing a great job here thanks for that.
– My number for DIV-2018 is EU- 30000. After a quick search in visa bulletin history I noticed that until last year the numbers are in favor of me, the cutoffs being 34000-40000 for Europe. But as another selectee mentioned above, unfortunately this year (unlike any previous year) the cutoff number reached current in April at 22100. This is quite confusing as there is a big difference with all other previous years. Any thoughts? Any predictions on whether DIV-2018 cut-offs will be similar to DIV-2017 (ending around 22000s) or will follow the previous scheme?
– Learning here that there are numbers at least up to 38000 for Europe makes me think that 30000 could still be safe to proceed, do you agree or is it just wishful thinking 🙂
– Thank you again.
May 4, 2017 at 14:01
OK – first. Current means enough visas for remaining demand.
As for where we will end up this year – I don’t know – but I would guess EU30000 doesn’t have to worry.

May 4, 2017 at 02:41

Hi Simon
I am selected for DV2018 and number is EUxxxx38000 and I am currently living in USA with valid non immigrant investor visa. We are planning to do change of status from USCIS instead of going to embassy overseas. 1) Since our number is quite on the edge do you think going to USCIS or embassy is there a better faster option and why? 2) Also as I see from bulletin history DV 2017 already started to show as “current” is that really mean that anybody can apply or visas is already over. And 3) Submitting DS-260 form early or like today or 2-3 months later does it make any difference? Thank you in advance. 4) 38000 rank is it hopeful?
May 4, 2017 at 02:58
1. There are pros and cons to both options. CP is slightly less stressful in that you would have your interview dates ahead of time.
2. It means enough visas for all. But then there are not nearly as many selectees in DV2017.
3. For your case number it makes no difference.
4. Risky.
May 4, 2017 at 02:18
Good day.
I need help.
I was selected for DV 2017. But the application was filed in my maiden name (there no information about my husband and kids).
Now I am married and I have two children and my husband last name.
Plus, I with my family in the US now and apply for asylum in January 2016. Waiting for interview. What are my chances to getting a green card?
Thank you.
May 4, 2017 at 03:01
You left your children off your entry? If so – almost no chance.
May 4, 2017 at 01:37
Hi Brit,
Thanks for the your update on the technical issue. I just wanted to give an input. The problem could be again related to date in entrance (like 2012) because I submitted several ones in the same day (for friends and family) and all of those entrances has this issue.
Thanks again
May 4, 2017 at 01:15
i check my status today and find this {Based on the information provided, the Entry HAS NOT BEEN SELECTED for further processing for the Electronic Diversity Visa program at this time}. what does that mean?
thank you simon
May 4, 2017 at 03:25
Not a winner.
May 4, 2017 at 00:55
checked the status today found that “the entree has not been selected”is that mean they maybe selected me leater and i try to check my status untile october?
May 4, 2017 at 03:27
I am certain there will not be a second draw this year. So – try next lottery.
May 3, 2017 at 23:29
I’m DV2018 sorry for not specifying.. can i stil submit I-485?
May 3, 2017 at 23:35
No – not for months.
May 4, 2017 at 01:50
Is there a way for me to change the way my DS260 is processed that I can go through consular processing instead? I feel as though I selected the wrong route (AoS)
May 4, 2017 at 03:04
CP won’t be faster.
May 3, 2017 at 23:17
Hi Brit,
I was selected from the South American/Caribbean region. My CN is SA9XX. The Visa Bulletin says “Current” under May 2017…does this mean I have a chance? Also, I’m currently studying the in the US on a student visa, does this expedite the time processing will take? If so, approximately how long? Thank you for all your advice thus far…
May 3, 2017 at 23:23
If you are DV2017, you could already have submitted your I-485.
May 3, 2017 at 23:04
Hello dear Simon.
God bless u! U are very helpful.
I have questions.
My wife won dv lottery but I dont have high school diploma neither two years of work experience. Is it gooing to be problem for green card? Since she got diploma but I dont?
And the other question is that, when I was filling up dv lottery back in October I had 1babyboy now i have 2second one. So now i have two children . How can I tell them that recently we had baby?
And third question is what is the next step to do since my wife is a winner of dv lottery?
Thanks and best regards.
May 3, 2017 at 23:21
Only the winner has to meet the criteria.
Read the guide (link at the top of this page). You will add a DS260 for the newborn.
May 3, 2017 at 22:08
Hi Simon – thanks for your great information on this site.
I’ve been selected for DV-2018 OC…..16**. I am currently on an E3 that expires in Feb 2018. Given my high Case number, I expect that that number range would not be on a bulletin for submitting full paperwork before feb 2018 (if at all). My query is … it seems premature to notify intention with my DS-260 to apply as a AoS seeing as my E3 may well be over before being selected to proceed further, so:
1. If I complete DS-260 now as a CP applicant, and then get a new E3 that takes me beyond Feb 2018, can I change my application process to an AoS at the time of lodging all of the paperwork (e.g. include an I-485 with my application)?
2. I understand the criteria for applying as a CP vs an AoS is a little different …. how does that impact final lodging of documents if I change my application ‘type’ part way through?
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks so much.
May 3, 2017 at 22:26
1. That number won’t get current until summer 2018 if at all. So – If you are on E3 status at that time you can adjust.
2. The criteria is pretty much the same – but for CP the background checks are run against the DS260, whereas those are done after the I-485 is submitted for AoS.
May 3, 2017 at 21:27
My employer is about to file perm for me. It will be sponsoring me for green card. Currently i have h1b. Yesterday i learned that i am selected for the diversity visa as well. My question while my employer is going through perm process, can i continu with diversty visa. Just in case.
May 3, 2017 at 22:28
You can do that if you want.
May 3, 2017 at 21:05
Dear Simon ,
kindly advise there will be another draw for DV2018 , of that’s the final result on 2nd of may 2017 ? and why then we have to keep our conformation number for 2 years ? and we can’t apply for DV2019 this because that will create an issue isn’t ?
May 3, 2017 at 22:30
I doubt there will be a second draw. You can apply for the next lottery.
May 4, 2017 at 05:35
Thanks alot so i can apply for dv2019 even if I’m applied for dv2018

Hi simon, me and my son got our visa processed in us and it s already been 5 months for my husband case and still on AP. Any idea for following up our case ? we are from iran but living in Europe Thanks
May 3, 2017 at 22:39
AP for Iranians commonly lasts around 5 to 6 months. Hopefully your wait will end soon!
May 3, 2017 at 20:16
Hi Simon, I applied for the DV lottery 2017 and got a confirmation that I was eligible, I was then given an account ID number.. Is it the same as the case number? Or what should i do to get the case number?
May 3, 2017 at 22:40
You were given an entrant confiormation code. Once you have checked your entry, if you are selected, you would have a case number.

Hi Simon. Have a question please:
Studying in Medical field like Dentistry could be a reason to put a case on AP?
I am from Iran but I live in Europe for more than 6 years. There was no problem on my case as I was told. but I got a paper than my case will be on AP. what was the reason for this?
and what are the updates mean? when you see that your case has an update?
Thanks
May 3, 2017 at 22:44
Being from Iran makes your risk of AP very high. AP for Iranians lasts around 5 to 6 months.
May 4, 2017 at 02:53
Is it for sure that it takes 5 to 6 months?
May 4, 2017 at 02:55
No – that’s just the “normal” time. It could take less or more. Of course – you only have until September 30th.
May 3, 2017 at 19:36
She was 20 at the entry. This year she got 21.This means she is not included as her mom derivate?I thought that if you 20 and younger you can win as a derivate.
May 3, 2017 at 22:45
OK – so that is not what you said before – but it explains how she was added to the entry. She is now aged out and cannot be a derivative.

Hello Brit. I have a scenario that i need immediately your help :My friend”s mom won 2018 DV Lottery. She has listed also her 21 year daughter as her derivate (she was 21 when her mom applied ).Now her daughter has a boyfriend and they have 5 years together. My question is this:If her daughter marries this guy ,can she take him with her in the United States by DV Lottery ?Or if she marries him she automatically looses her chance to win her visa by her mom ?Or should she go to the States with her mom,get married later and apply to take her husband for 2 years?Thank you.
May 3, 2017 at 19:17
The daughter will not be included on the mothers DV win. She has aged out. In fact – if she was already 21 at entry, they probably errored in the birthdate anyway.
An LPR cannot sponsor a child over 21 – so the mother would have to become a citizen (takes 5 years) and then sponsor the daughter (which is several years more).
May 3, 2017 at 17:42
Hi,
I lost the confirmation number. when should I expect an email confirming if I win?
Thank you

Thanks for you help.

Hi Simon,
I recently been chosen for further processing with my DV visa, and I have one question concerning my education, Im from Lithuania, and Im currently in university 3’rd year 🙂 but Its master degree, so i will get the diploma after 2,5 years. I wanted to ask if my education of 12 years in elementary/high school, and my secondary school diploma will be accepted, and enough? 🙂
May 3, 2017 at 18:54
That education will be fine.
May 3, 2017 at 21:21
Thanks for your time and hard work 🙂
Also one more question, how often would I have to visit USA to maintain my card, because I will still have about 2 years left of education which I have to finish 🙂 Is there a way to maybe just go there once half a year? 🙂 for a few days 🙂 until I finish university 🙂
May 3, 2017 at 22:29
Every 6 months ideally or apply for a re-entry permit (I-131) to have 2 years.

Hi Brit,
As per I-134 supporting evidences (page 3):
The following to be submitted as an evidence of income:
A) Statement from an officer bank showing Date account opened, total amount deposited & present balances
B) Statement from employer on business stationary showing date & nature of employment, salary paid and whether the position is temp. or permanent.
Are these documents quite sufficient for affidavit of support. Please advise?
May 3, 2017 at 15:28
The I-134 should be supported by 1040/W2/Payslips and photo ID

Gday Simon,
Got selected with a low 1000 Oceania number. As a heads up, I have completed DS-260 form, however am unable to submit it due to an error that says my case number is different from the one I used to login (it definitely isn’t). I called KCC and they have someone working on it apparently, not sure if you have heard any reports of this yet?
Second point, I was on a J-1 visa in 2016 and am worried the 2 year foreign residence thing may result in me being excluded from the draw? Can you shed any light on this? Obviously I answered Yes in that section on the DS-260 form.
Cheers for your help!
May 3, 2017 at 15:20
Confirmation number not equal to case number.
The 2 year exclusion my be completed (or waived) before they issue the visa.
May 3, 2017 at 22:33
Hi Nick, I was selected from Australia and I am having the exact same problem. After completing my DS-260 once hitting the sign approval button it is telling my my case number is different to the one I signed in with. I have written to KCC to find out what is the problem. Would live to know if you hear anything.
Cheers
Grant
May 4, 2017 at 06:12
I had the same problem. Frustrated, I saved the form and exit. Just when I was about to close the tab on my browser, I noticed that my case number written there somehow didn’t have the zeros. I tried once again and voila! It worked.
May 3, 2017 at 14:50
hi Simon,
My hopes are fading fast…I am a South African citizen.
I applied for dv lottery 2018 last year, I checked Status on the 2nd of May 2017. I was taken to a page which said “ I was selected for further processing for dv lottery for 2018. I received a case number (2018AF000——). I tried to go on to the site to complete my forms online and it keeps giving me an error. Is there something wrong? How this affect my process in application of my visa? What can I do to rectify the problem? Does this mean my application will be canceled? Is it @ all possible for me to get a new case number(should the problem persist)? Please forgive me but I an freaking out!!
Please advice me on how to proceed further. Please help!!
Regards,
Clive

Calm down!!! This is a long process – it lasts months – up to 18 months. You are freaking out on day 2!!
Just be calm and patient. You don’t need to submit your form today.

Hello Brit, my husband and I went for our interview yesterday and with all the advices you been giving us over the past months it all went well. However, even though were told that our visas have been approved during the interview but our status was changed from ready to Administrative processing since yesterday. We were expecting our status to read ISSUED.
Do you think there’s any problem with that.
Thanks and God bless.

Hello Simon
I will need to use my work experience to qualify for my DV entry. I have found my role duties are the same as HR Specialist on *onet and it ticks all the boxes however my role is called “Project Officer” My question is should i enter my job title as Project Officer or as what the *onet match is? I have proof of my duties I just don’t want my application being denied at the 260 form submission stage before I can show my proof. What would you suggest?
Thanks in Advance
May 3, 2017 at 14:36
THey don’t deny at DS260 stage. Ever.
May 3, 2017 at 23:21
Thanks Simon, So I would still get an interview even if I put Project Officer (which is not on *onet list) but should be ready to show all of my proof of quals at interview?
May 3, 2017 at 23:21
Yes

Hi simon I need some help about my case
May 4, 2017 at 16:27
You have to ask me a question…
May 3, 2017 at 12:06
Hi Simon, I have been selected with a low case number, My question is I don’t currently know anyone in the US and don’t have another address. I could put my company’s NY office address but would like to avoid it. Any suggestions what to put on the D-260? Cheers.

Find someone you can trust with a residential address.
May 3, 2017 at 15:14
Would you be willing for a small fee?
May 3, 2017 at 15:30
It should be someone YOU know/trust. You can find someone – surely!!
