The I-134 is the ONLY affidavit of support authorized for use in DV lottery cases. I have written about why it is used at this post. I also wrote about the differences between the I-134 and the I-864 as some people are still confused why the I-864 is not used in DV lottery cases. So – I am assuming that you know what this form is, and when it should be used. This post is simply to alert people to the new form which is significantly changed from the old form. The old form is still valid for now, but from the end of February the new form must be used when presented at the embassy.
The new form is 8 pages long. The sponsor now needs to provide more detail including listing the selectee and all the derivatives and declaring any past sponsorships. These changes will reduce the misuse of the form, since sponsors would commit perjury if they lied on this form.
The form itself and the accompanying instructions are very clear. Any sponsor should be able to complete this form unaided.
The new form is available at the same link as the old form – here.

In my Ds-260, I mentioned a family friend as the person sponsoring me. But now, a different relative has agreed to sponsor me. So, can the i-864 be filled with my new sponsor or the family friend mentioned in the Ds-260?
In other words, can someone not mentioned in the Ds-260(in the person you are going to live with section) be my sponsor and fill the i-864 for me?
June 15, 2022 at 19:58
Edit: I mean I-134
June 18, 2022 at 17:56
The I-134. Yes.
May 13, 2021 at 19:46
Hi Brit,
One of my friend is a dv 2022 winner. And we’re here in US after winning dv2020. I have plan to bring my parents as we’re expecting a baby this year. My question;
1. Can I sponsor my friend?
2. If I sponsor, will this mean i cannot sponsor my parents and bring in?
Please suggest.
May 14, 2021 at 00:56
Perhaps you should focus on your parents.
March 9, 2020 at 08:36
Dear BritSimon,
We are EU35k (me and spouse).
We have a friend in USA that will be our host.
However our Friend don’t make enough to sponsor both of us, but member of his family that we don’t know in person is more then happy to sponsor us (sign I-134).
Is it problem if we don’t know the sponsor in person?
If we understood well, person that will sponsor two of us needs to make at least $25,525 per year?
What if we have I-134 and CO don’t ask us for one, is I-134 still valid, I mean will it still be our sponsor even CO didn’t asked for it…
THANKS!!!
March 9, 2020 at 17:16
There is no value in the sponsor if they don’t know you.
The sponsorship is only in relation to the interview – there is NO obligation on the sponsor.
February 28, 2020 at 05:08
Hi Brit,
If I fill intend to question no. 38, what type of information should I need to fill in the part 7?
February 28, 2020 at 19:15
Click intend or do not intend. They have clarified, on the form itself, that this is about the SPECIFICS of the contribution.
December 16, 2019 at 11:37
Hello Birit, My case number is a bit far ahead 2020AF40K. I was wondering to ask you that I have no body or relatives to help when time arrives for collecting necessary document for sponsor for the form I-134. I found some to help me out on this can use this opportunity now, not to wait till the interview time? is that possible? My understanding is this form last for one year(expired within a year). what do you advice me sir?
December 16, 2019 at 15:19
Wait until nearer your interview.
December 10, 2019 at 14:10
Hello Brit!!
I am 2020AF24***.
I found a person willing to sponsor me. But she had some concerns.
-First one, she made last year more income that this year’s.
– Second, she made a mistake while filling the IRS report and she’s on a corrective plan with the IRS. Would this issue makes it non accepted by the embassy if presented at the interview?
Thanks
December 11, 2019 at 02:10
As long as the income levels are enough, that should not be a problem.
December 11, 2019 at 14:52
Thanks for the reply.
I have another person that is wiling to sponsor me too.
Is it a problem to have 2 persons sponsor you at the same time?
Because I’m not sure if anyone is going to put up with that burden. And I can see why, it’s a legal responsibility. So I’m not going to be surprised if one of them, or both, will apologize at the last minute.
Thanks.
December 11, 2019 at 17:12
Only one I-134 is used/needed.
December 12, 2019 at 08:57
I was contacted by the person willing to sponsor me. She was my host family back in 2005 as a young exchange student, using the J1 visa. The exchange program was funded by the department of state.
She contacted me to tell that her lawyer stated that the only way to sponsor me is that I am a blood relative. Which I am not.
Is it true?
December 12, 2019 at 23:27
Your terminology is causing confusion. The lawyer if probably saying that only a blood relative can apply for a GC for someone (family based immigration).
You are asking for a financial supporter. Different thing.
September 18, 2019 at 08:20
Thank you for responding Brit. Id like to ask you another question regarding register for document delivery. when I log into my profile in CGI federal, in step 1 which is select visa type I choose “IV Address Registration” then I should select my visa class which it doesn’t appear that DV is existed and I dont know which visa class I should select.
I tried choosing “Appointment scheduled by NVC” and selected DV1 then it appears this message “The Case ID that you have entered cannot be found.”
please inform what is wrong with my case and what the steps I should follow.
thank you for your time Brit.
September 18, 2019 at 16:12
Use your best judgement – you are only trying to setup a courier account, you are NOT trying to create a new appointment.
September 17, 2019 at 07:02
Hello Brit, I am DV 2020 winner I have interview in 20 October. I have 2 questions:
1- Do my sponser has to attach Tax 1040 with I 134 to prove his financial state ?
2- in my DS 260 I put the sponsor someone else the person who will really send me I 134. IS there a problem here?
thank you very much Brit
September 17, 2019 at 20:24
1. Yes, plus more recent Payslips and photo ID.
2. No.
September 3, 2019 at 19:42
I was interviewed but was told to bring a I -134 form to continue the process. My sponsor sent it to me already. Now I can I reschedule my appointment?
September 4, 2019 at 00:57
Ask the embassy.
September 4, 2019 at 00:58
You only need to provide the document. Contact the embassy and ask them how. Hurry up!
August 15, 2019 at 00:49
Hi Brit,
First of all thank you very much for your help.
I’m a winner of dv program 2020, African reregion
I want to know if I will be asked to bring sponsor on the day of interview. ?
Thanks.
August 15, 2019 at 04:22
You may be asked for an I-134
August 15, 2019 at 00:15
hi brit !my wife is the principal applicant I am the derivative person ,along with affidavit I-134 i would like to show proof of my ownership of a house and lands ,is that accountable at embassy since Im not the principal applicant ?
August 15, 2019 at 04:22
Those assets are not liquid, so they are useless.
August 14, 2019 at 09:34
Hello Brit,
Is it required to print Double Sided the i134 form?
Thank you.
August 14, 2019 at 10:23
Doesn’t matter.
August 8, 2019 at 17:28

Hey Simon !
First of all thank you for this DV knowledge base. You are probably the only one in the world who has it so detailed and up-to-date. I love how you break down stats (like a consultant) to draw trends. Simply amazing bro.
My Questions:
1) I was selected due to birth in a country that is in the eligible for DV lottery (Pakistani National born in the UAE). Does this kind of eligibility affect me in any way during the process?
2) What amount is a good “proof of funds” to support me and my wife (that’ll please the CO basically)?
3) I see a lot of mention for i134 or i864 in the interview stories. Can you explain in what scenarios do I need it as a DV applicant?
4) I have relatives in US who have PR and also a friend who has a PR. Will it help me in any way?
5) I know my case number needs me to wait a very long time. What can i prepare now or in the upcoming months? (I’ve already filed DS-260).
Massive Thanks in Advance.
-Muhammad
August 8, 2019 at 20:32
1. No.
2. https://britsimonsays.com/all-about-public-charge-affidavit-of-support-i-134/
3. See 2.
4. With an I-134, yes. No other impact.
5. Work on your patience. Just that.
August 8, 2019 at 16:00
Hello Brit
Is it compulusory to have I-134 with us while we go for the interview? So what else documents do we need from our sponsor for interview.
Thank you.

Hi
I am DV2020 winner. AS28×××
I was going through I-134 form.
Both my husband and my maternal Uncle is US. We have asked one of them to be our sponsor. My uncle responded saying he has sponsored three people already and can be partial sponsore.
My question:
1. Can my uncle wife be our sponsore if she hasn’t been one.
2. We have amount to show 20000$ in bank so partial payment is fine.
3. Can our friends be our sponsor?
4. We didnt get yet any notifications for submitting our documents but can we start working on the I-134 form?
August 6, 2019 at 17:24
1. Yes
2. Partial payment???? I don’t know what you mean.
3. Yes
4. It is bvery early to be doing that now as you will probably have a year to wait.
August 6, 2019 at 03:17
Mr. Simon… I don’t understand very well about this topic…
How to know when is the appropriate time to fill the I-134 form?
The KCC is going to require it to me? Or is a personal decision to take the form to the interview?
The sponsor just have to fill, print, sign and send me the form? Or has to send it before to USCIS.
Thanks again… my CN is 2020SA26XX
August 6, 2019 at 03:29
You may be asked for it at the interview – so have it send to you nearer the interview along with supporting documents (W2/1040, Payslips, Photo ID)
July 31, 2019 at 18:39
Hi,
Does my sponsor need to send the form I-134 to a USCIS office for approval before send it to me for the interview? or he should just print and sign the form and then send it to me along with the supporting documents without any approval?
August 3, 2019 at 17:50
No approval needed. It says that right on the form.
July 19, 2019 at 11:38
Hello Brit,
Is there any requirements about the relationship between you and the sponsor? Ex. If he is someone you know who would like to fill the sponsorship. b/c they ask to write the relationship in I-134 form?
July 19, 2019 at 13:53
It is important that the sponsor is someone you know. Otherwise they will question why a stranger will support you.
June 21, 2019 at 20:28
Hi Sir,
My sponsor just told me that he sent the affidavit along with financial proves to an address that was provided by USCIS officer in Chicago. According to him, the USCIS officer confirmed that I don’t have anything to do with those documents. So he didn’t send me any copy.
1. It’s also ok as he sent the documents to USCIS without me getting copy?
2. Or should I try to get copy as well for my interview?
Please help me sir. I’m so confused about this!
Thanks.
June 22, 2019 at 14:04
1. No – that is useless to you.
2. Yes
June 22, 2019 at 20:57
Thanks for being there for us at all time Sir.
June 12, 2019 at 18:24
Good day Sir,
I’m here again. I’m deciding to change my sponsor. My new sponsor could be my friend’s brother. He’s married with two children. Also, he recently filed a family – based affidavit for his mother in September 2017 amounting to four (4) persons as his dependents.
1. Having filed for his mother in September 2017, can he still be my sponsor?
Thanks.
June 12, 2019 at 20:05
If he meets the income requirements, yes.
June 12, 2019 at 21:11
Thanks for the response and being patient with me Sir.
June 11, 2019 at 21:18
Sir,
I’m sorry for asking you too many questions concerning I-134. My sponsor hasn’t filed affidavit for anyone yet. So she’s asking me too many questions as well.
I understand that she doesn’t have to send copy to the embassy where I will be interviewed; but:
1. Does she have to send copy of the affidavit to any immigration center in the U.S.?
2. It’s possible for me to live where I mentioned as my sponsor mailing address (where green card to be delivered) and my sponsor also live in another state?
Thanks.
June 11, 2019 at 21:36
1. No
2. Yes
June 12, 2019 at 02:04
Thanks continuously…
June 4, 2019 at 13:43
Good day Sir,
My sponsor is starting to fill my I-134. she was talking about notarizing the I-134. Following the comments here, you replied to someone’s comment that the form doesn’t have to be notarized; and I told my sponsor that she doesn’t have to notarize after filling the form.
1. I’m correct to tell her that “She doesn’t have to notarize the I-134”?
2. Does she have to send copy of the filled I-134 to the embassy where I’m scheduled for interview?
3. If she sends me scanned copy of the filled I-134, get it printed by myself and take it with me during the interview, will it be ok?
Thanks.
June 4, 2019 at 19:05
1. Yes. That is clear on the instructions for the form.
2. No she gives it to you along with income proof and ID
3. Yes
June 4, 2019 at 19:24
That’s clear. Thanks for the response.
April 18, 2019 at 20:00
Do sponsor need to submit multiple i-134 forms for each family member?
April 19, 2019 at 01:41
No. One for the family.
April 10, 2019 at 06:39
Hello britsimon,
I just wanted to know if the persons address that we used in DS260 has to be same person who will send us the I134 or it may be different.
In case if its different do we need to update the address in DS260 of new sponsor. our interview is in coming may.
thanks in advance
April 10, 2019 at 16:06
It can be different. The address in your DS260 is where the GC wil be sent – so you can update that at the interview if needed.
April 10, 2019 at 16:29
Thanks a lot for your quick response
Again sorry for asking …can we land or stay at any place in USA or it has to be sponsor or the address that is in ds260
April 10, 2019 at 16:46
Land and stay anywhere. After you settle in the USA you have to keep USCIS updated with your current address (online form).
April 8, 2019 at 13:12
Hello Brit. Is W2 necessary at the time of interview??
Thanks
April 8, 2019 at 14:26
That is one of the documents needed to support an I-134.
November 19, 2018 at 19:00
Hello Brit,
In form 134 the sponsor statement option: I Do/do not intend to make specific contributions to the support of the person .
Note: (If you select “intend,” indicate the exact nature and duration.
* Is it a problem if my sponsor indicate I don’t intend??
November 19, 2018 at 20:19
Yes. It needs to say “intend”, then give description of the support without a time limit.
November 19, 2018 at 21:04
Thanks for valued answer brit. Sorry to ask again. But my sponsor is afraid about this Q although I explained it is not legally bounding. But he chose to signed it like this.
* dose (don’t intend) make the affidavit of support Invalid? And I should look for another sponsor?
Thanks again
November 19, 2018 at 22:31
I already answered.
May 14, 2019 at 00:43
Hi there,
Firstly, thanks very much for taking time out to address our queries. I got selected for DV2020 and will be interviewed at a different location (China). I had some questions regarding this I-134 form:
1. I am currently about to finish my university. I don’t have saving or assets etc. Therefore, will I require to submit this form?
2. If possibly, I am able to find a sponsor then will I have to get the i134 form signed by the sponsor and notarized? Also, can he send me the scan copy only or will the exact original signed copy will be accepted?
Thanks.
May 14, 2019 at 02:33
1. Most likely, yes.
2. Can be emailed. Not notarized.
October 24, 2018 at 16:20
Hello Brit,
My sponsor wrote in the affidavit that he’ll intend to cover all expenses, including lodging, food, incident and medical expenses without a time limit, is that okay?
Thanks!
October 24, 2018 at 16:35
Yes
September 28, 2018 at 14:51
My sponsor has sent his taxes and proof of work before to my brother for him to get a turist visa, but my brother didnt get the turist visa. Should my sponsor include my brothers name in this form?
September 28, 2018 at 18:44
He should answer the questions on the form accurately.
September 28, 2018 at 10:22
Hi Simon.
DV2019 AS24XX – Japan here. Based on the information on this site, I could be current as soon as December. In anticipation, I have already received a signed affidavit of support from a willing sponsor, only to realize that the form has an expiration date of November 30th 2018. Do you know when a new form will be published?
September 28, 2018 at 14:21
Don’t worry about that. Just use the current form.
September 28, 2018 at 14:24
will I-134 filled now still work at around may/june?
September 28, 2018 at 14:26
does it have any expiration?
or will there be changes?
September 28, 2018 at 14:30
You don’t fill out the I-134 that early.
September 19, 2018 at 16:08
Is there a problem if your sponsor is also dv lottery selectee who arrived in USA FEB 2017 a family four am alone
September 19, 2018 at 16:50
Another sponsor would be better.
August 24, 2018 at 22:36
Hello Brit, my sponsor sent me the i-134 form along with the following supporting documentations as stated in the instructions at USCIS page:
A. Statement from an officer of the bank or other financial institutions with deposits, identifying the following details
regarding the account:
(1) Date account opened;
(2) Total amount deposited for the past year; and
(3) Present balance.
B. Statement(s) from your employer on business stationery showing:
(1) Date and nature of employment;
(2) Salary paid; and
(3) Whether the position is temporary or permanent.
He also sent me financial information about his assets and shares.
Would this be enough? I am concerned as he didn’t provide the W2 or 1040 documentation.
Thanks in advance!
August 24, 2018 at 22:39
I can’t be certain whether this will be enough for the CO or not.
August 7, 2018 at 14:23
i have seen that u need $10000 so if i have that amount i wont need I-134?
last time please
thank u for your response
August 7, 2018 at 14:30
also i am bit bad at english so please help me.
The selectee only needs to provide one I-134 to cover their case (it covers the principal and all derivatives). The income of the person filling out the I-134 should be greater than that shown on the Federal Poverty Guidelines for total number of family members for the sponsor/family AND the selectee/derivatives.
August 7, 2018 at 16:38
It’s very clear, if you don’t understand ask some specific question.
August 7, 2018 at 17:08
ok specific question for u?
i have bank balance but no one in US to give me i134. do i need i 134 or else what can i do
thank you for your response.
August 7, 2018 at 17:12
That is detailed here.

hi brit,
i have kept my us address in ds260 as virgina but the person who was going to give me i134 has moved to california. is there going to be any problem and what can i do about it.
August 7, 2018 at 13:45
No problem.
August 7, 2018 at 13:51
i went through your description on affidavit support.
it says either I-134 or financial statement
but on FAQ i saw u said I-134 is required.
so if i have bank statement do i still need I-134?
August 7, 2018 at 14:04
That depends how much money you have. Read this properly. https://britsimonsays.com/all-about-public-charge-affidavit-of-support-i-134/
July 24, 2018 at 16:58
Hi Brits
I am a DV 2019 winner from Ethiopia with CN 2019Af10*** not yet submitted my DS260
1. Is it possible that my sponsor can live in NY, but I actually am planning to reside in DC? Because I am hoping to get job opportunity with my current employer ( an NGO) which its HQ is based in DC.
2. Do you think this may create a problem during my interview?
Thanks
July 24, 2018 at 17:06
1. Yes
2. No
July 24, 2018 at 16:16
Hi brit
what answer should we choose for question number 38 of I-134 affidavit of support ?
intend or do not intend
July 24, 2018 at 16:28
Intend.
July 12, 2018 at 13:15
Case:2018AF…
Sir,my host, (husband to my first cousin) working with the US military had sponsored his wife early 2017 and she joined him in US.
1.Would it be a problem if he fills our affidavit of support given the time frame between the time he sponsored his wife n now us?
2. Is there a limit as to how many people one can sponsor within a given time? We are a family of three.
3. If theres a link on same..pls share to me so I can be enlightened on same.
July 12, 2018 at 14:54
1. Possibly.
2. It affects the total number of people (and therefore affects the income needed).
3. Read the FAQ for the formula.
June 5, 2018 at 15:46
Hi Brit my sponsor wrote in the affidavit that he’ll intend to provide me food board etc for 12 months is that okay?
June 5, 2018 at 16:42
I normally recommend the statement should be without a time limit – but it should be OK.
May 11, 2018 at 15:37
Hi Brit, my sponsor already 6 times sponsored DV selected peoples. This year sponsoring my family. It is possible or impossible?
Thanks very much Brit
December 12, 2017 at 17:43
Hi Brit,
I have two questions:
1- Does the form need to be notarized
2- In the additional information, how long should the sponsor commit to support me
December 12, 2017 at 18:12
1. No
2. Indefinitely.
