The “January” bulletin has been released. It includes details of case numbers that are current for February interviews.
Those that are current, and have forms processed early enough, they can expect their 2NL in about 1 to 2 weeks from now. I know I am going to get a lot of people who will ask me this exact question – so let me say that again. 2NLs will be sent in about one or two weeks time – that means the latter part of the month. The schedule is that VBs are published between the 8th and the 15th of each month, and 2NLs go out from the 15th to the end of the month (most typically around the 20th to 24th). This is the same every month, so there is no need to ask me.
To those new to looking at VBs, let me explain what the “except” XXX country means.
Processing is spread out over the full year. You can see the progress of the two previous years in this post about basic questions. However, some countries have a high number of selectees and those selectees are concentrated in the lower case numbers. For various reasons, mainly to do with embassy capacity, KCC slow down certain countries as compared to the region. So – in Africa, any case with a case number shown as under the new number can be interviewed but for cases from Egypt, that number is lower. That isn’t a big problem, it just “slows down” those countries a little more than the rest of the region. Since selectees from those countries all have lower case numbers, this slowing down does not present any risk. It does not (at this point) mean they won’t allow all selectees an interview from those countries.
To understand why some countries get lower case numbers, read this article about the lottery draw process.

Hi BritSimon,
On current green card interview we were 5 of us (me, spouse and 3 daughters) and have been approved. Can I move first to the USA and after some time my family? is there any requirement about family moving except visa’s deadline?
Thanks for your advises
February 14, 2018 at 15:05
The principal can go first. All must move by the expiry.
February 7, 2018 at 08:40
Dear BritSimon, I have been vaccined against flu, but not against tetanus (earlier when my hand had been injured I made pre tetanus-vaccination and my body reacted badly on it, so a doctor did not risk to do vaccination). Will it affect on my greencard interview?
Thanks

January 16, 2018 at 16:22
Hi there. It’s the morning of the 16th now, do they ever update the bulletin during the day, or is it usually first thing in the morning? With most of the country being off yesterday with MLK day, I expected there to be a delay but I was hoping to see an update this morning.

January 16, 2018 at 16:38
you are amazing – you always reply so quickly. thank you. Your blog has helped me so much, including helping me realize I don’t need a laywer to assist with my case and also to take the family back to Aus to get our visas processed rather than do AOS (we are currently living in the US). anyway thank you, you are awesome
January 16, 2018 at 16:59
I did AOS. It is a safe process and less hassle than travelling – but if you want to take the trip home anyway – then CP is also a fine choice.
January 16, 2018 at 18:11
my concern with AOS is that my number typically comes up around April of each year and AOS appears to be taking 9months to process in the field office near me or any field office actually. that doesn’t leave enough time to have it processed before Sept 30. Feels like we’re at the mercy of field officer if we did AOS, or do they generally process the DVs quicker because of time crunch? We are sort of due for a trip home but could do without the expense really.
January 16, 2018 at 18:19
AOS will be a safe bet then – April is LOADS of time. DV cases are not processed on the standard FO timelines. Now – having said that – what is your case number?
January 16, 2018 at 21:39
I just saw the Feb bulletin!! We actually miss the March cut off by 2! is there somewhere I can send you my case number that’s not public? I was curious as to whether it meant we would get processed early April since we are so close to the cut off number. Or does it not really work like that?
January 16, 2018 at 22:27
Most people write their case numbers like this – 2018OC8XX. That tells me that you are OC 800 to 899.
No – it does not mean an early April interview. It just means “sometime” in April. Sydney only does DV interviews on Tuesdays.
January 17, 2018 at 00:08
Very interesting that Syd only does interviews on Tuesdays. Very helpful in planning return date too!! We’ll decide with the next day or so on CP vs AOS. Although there’s one factor that might be the deciding factor. I have a step son who is on our application but he doesn’t live with us in the US. He visits us on an L2 Visa. Can he do AOS or does this all lead towards no choice but for all of us to do CP where he resides?
January 17, 2018 at 00:13
I assume the son is under 21? CP would be best then. He would otherwise have to enter the USA (observing the 30/60/90 rule even though it has changed), and then stay in the USA all the time while you process.
If you do CP on the other hand he would need to be with you at the interview.
The costs are possibly quite similar. AOS is 1200+ versus 330.
If you do CP, you have to plan to bein country a few days before the interview (to do medicals), and stay at least 1 week after the interview (for the visas). So – your trip will last about 2 weeks minimum.
January 17, 2018 at 01:53
Ok I think that settles it. CP. Yes step son is under 21 (almost 16). He wouldn’t be able to stay for an extended period. We also have 4 other children.
Out of interest, do you know how long AOS usually takes for DVs?
Thank you again ever so much for all your help!
January 17, 2018 at 02:09
AOS times can vary. It normally takes less time with cases submitted at the end of the year (meaning the FO’s rush those cases). My own case was current in June, and I was an LPR on September 2 – my FO (San Fran) bundled up several DV AOS cases to process together.
January 16, 2018 at 21:40
oh, and on our DS260 we requested CP. Does it complicate things to change to AOS once we get our letter (eventually for April)?
January 16, 2018 at 22:28
You would need to let KCC know you will change, otherwise they will schedule your interview.
So. If you want to do AOS you will be able to submit your I-485 in about 4 weeks time. So – you need to make your mind up now whether you are going to do AOS or stick with CP.
January 16, 2018 at 14:01
