We have many DV2020 selectees with very basic questions. Let me try and address the most frequent ones here in the hope that people will read this. If you ask a question and I give you a link to this page, it is to indicate that your question can be answered by reading this page and using some common sense. Please use the links in the title at the top of this page for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and the DV lottery guide. There is LOTS of information available on my site – so a look through the FAQ and guide will take care of most questions.
Please read the ground rules at the bottom of this page.
Current Status of the ESC page
For the first few days each year the performance of the system is bad. Too many people are checking, the site gets overwhelmed and crashes. As of today, it seems to be behaving better most of the time – BUT it could still crash or be sluggish.
The site is accurately providing results. It is not broken for basic checking. However, the “Forgot Confirmation Number link is broken. It takes your info and bounces back to the start when you submit. So – if you have not got your details from the entry last year, you will have to wait until they fix that functionality. I have NO IDEA when that will be. You have to just wait. I have received MANY requests to recover confirmation codes for people, I have NO WAY of doing that, so your emails are being ignored.
Next, as usual, I have already had many people who swear they have followed instructions and the system won’t find their result. Every single case I have been sent so far that I have check I was able to get the result first time. That means people are not paying attention. The most common ways are entering the whole name (not just the lastname before the comma), or they mix up letters/numbers in the confirmation code. The system prompts people about the latter, but people ignore that, and assume the system is broken. It is not broken. YOU are making a mistake. The links below will help both with the checking AND with accessing the DS260 for winners.
However, I do want to urge people to NOT rush to fill out the DS260. There is no advantage to rushing, and many of you can actually cause yourself a problem by submitting a DS260 without thinking it through. So – wait. Read below and take your time.
Here are two links to help those still not able to check their entry:
https://britsimonsays.com/faq/checking-esc-page-check-without-mistakes/
And here is a video to explain how to check your entry result.
And for those that cannot submit their DS260
https://britsimonsays.com/faq/ds260-case-number-doesnt-match-case-number/
And those that cannot access their DS260 because of invalid immigrant case number message click this link
Now – some questions.
Is there a deadline to submit my DS260?
There is no official deadline to submit your DS260. People will continue to submit DS260s for DV2019 cases well into 2020. Submissions as late as April, May or perhaps even June of next year will still get processed in time.
How long does it take to process the DS260?
The way DS260’s are processed was changed for DV2018. In addition there was a change to the process at the beginning of this year about ubmitting documents to KCC AFTER the DS260. So – please be careful.
The actual processing time of the DS260 is quite short – probably 3 to 4 weeks. From 2018, KCC managed to prioritize the way they process DS260s to ensure DS260s submitted for lower case numbers are processed before higher case numbers that will wait anyway for their case numbers to become current. This was a good change – because in previous years DS260 caused scheduling delays for many cases.
Does every DS260 take the same time to process?
No. There is some background checks required on each case that vary according to the situation of the selectees. The precise details of the checks are not published, but we can guess they are mainly about ensuring security of the USA. That means they communicate with agencies and foreign governments about the details you provide on the DS260. Some countries co-operate with the USA, some don’t. In countries that don’t co-operate you can expect DS260 will take longer. So, some cases are very simple, and some not so simple. If a selectee was raised in Western Europe, works in an office and has never travelled to certain high risk countries we can expect the DS260 processing (once the case is ACTUALLY processed, not queued) to be quick. If on the other hand someone has travel history around certain countries in the middle East or lists their work as “Nuclear weapons specialist”, well they can expect the US government to take longer over those checks.
So – never assume that all DS260s submitted on the same day will complete processing on the same day. There will be variations.
When will I be interviewed?
Interview timing is mainly based on your case number, and where that number is ranked within each region. If you submitted your DS260 early, but have a high case number within your region, you will wait until that case number is ready to be interviewed. So – if you are case number 10000 in AS region for example you can expect a long wait before being interviewed. However regions have their own numbering, SO that same number in AF region (where the highest case number could be a lot higher) that 10000 number would be very low. So “low or high” number is relative within the region.
Is my number safe?
At this time we are already seeing some VERY high case numbers being quoted, these high numbers are FAR beyond the numbers that we have come to consider as safe numbers. So there can only be two explanations of that.
- KCC have selected FAR too many people and high case numbers will not get interviewed. That has happened before, and is somewhat “normal” which is why being selected is not a guarantee of getting a Green Card.
- There are more holes this year because KCC implemented some new technology/rule. This is a possible, but probably over optimistic idea. As I mentioned in my last article the case numbers are not consecutive. So – it is possible to have a massive increase in holes over previous years. But until we see the selectee numbers we will not know how many holes there are.
The point is, if point 2 is not correct (and I tend to believe it is not), then this year will see cutoffs at the end of the year so selectees with high case numbers will miss out. Again, until we see the selectee numbers we cannot say for sure what is high, or what is safe. Please understand I cannot answer the “am I safe” question for many of you.
Update July 2019 – since this article was published we now have more data and I have predictions here:
When will interviews start and how will I be told of my interview date?
No DV2020 interviews will happen before October 2019. DV2020 interviews will continue until September 30th 2020. So stop packing your bags. It’s a long process. Interview scheduled are notified in monthly batches about 6 weeks before the interview month. The notification is called the 2NL.
When will KCC send the first 2NLs?
The first 2NLs (the interview notification) for DV2020 will go out in mid/late August. That will be for cases that have been processed AND are current for October, AND have submitted their documents. Then 2NLs will come in a monthly schedule, also late in each month. So – late in September for November interviews and so on.
When are the visa bulletins published?
The visa bulletins are published around the 8th to the 15th of each month. If you call KCC they will always respond that it is released on the 15th. They are not “late” until the 16th. Usually I get people lamenting “the sky is falling” and “why are they so late” around the 10th or 11th. That will happen every month – and no matter how many times I explain, people are impatient. But please understand this is very predictable – there WILL be a new VB every month, between the 8th and the 15th. Every month.
“My case number is XXXX when will I be scheduled?”
Oh man. These questions are tiring. I really expect people to use some thought process about this, and if you can’t do that, then asking me to think for you is not going to be warmly welcomed by me. I have made available more than enough information to get an idea of how scheduling works, but remember, cases are scheduled according to ALL the following three things.
- The case number. No case will EVER be scheduled until the case number is ready.
- DS260 submission. Until the DS260 is submitted AND PROCESSED, you will not be scheduled.
- Submitted documents to KCC (new process). Until your documents are submitted to KCC you will not be processed. Read about the new procedure here.
How do KCC schedule the cases?
Roughly speaking all interviews are spread out over the year, starting in October and ending the following September. KCC release numbers via the visa bulletin to say which case numbers can be interviewed. Check out this article to understand how to read the visa bulletin.
KCC will increase the number made current on each region at a pace that ensures they have enough interviews to match the embassy capacity during each month.
So – to take an example. If OC had a highest case number of 1000, we could roughly expect to see that number increase by 100 each month. It might be 75 one month and 125 the next, but you get the general idea – it is a slow progression over the year.
Will there be a second draw?
In some years it is possible that there would be a small second draw around September/October. However, it would only be a small number of cases – so chances of being in that selection are very small. However, given the high case numbers we are seeing, there is almost no chance of a second draw for DV2020.
Please learn to be self sufficient about this point. This site has LOTS of information. Please apply some common sense and think before asking a question.
You can look at the historical visa bulletin numbers from previous years to get an idea how things work. However, every year is different, so I would suggest only taking a look at DV2018 to try and anticipate when your number will be scheduled for interview. **Please** do that rather than asking me to predict your interview date. Use some judgment and common sense to allow me to spend my time on people that need help with more critical questions.
Selectees, cases and case numbers
OK – so there is some confusion about this – so let me cover it here.
When the selectee numbers are published (in the July or August visa bulletin there is a number shown for each country within each region. That number is the number of *selectees – INCLUDING derivatives*. So – if a winner was single, that is one selectee on one case number. If the winner was married and had one child, that would count as three selectees. The global quota of visas is 50,000, so if the three person family were to be approved, that is 3 out of 50,000.
Each winner gets a case number. The derivatives are on that same case number. Each region has it’s on set of case numbers – so there can be an AF1, AF2, AS1, AS2, EU1 and EU2 ands so on. So when you tell me your case number is case number 12345 – it is meaningless. I need the year and region.
As I explain in this post about holes theory – the case numbers assigned have “holes” (or gaps between them). So – case number 2019EU20000 does NOT have 19999 cases in front of them. The number will be less. However, there may be less case numbers – but each case has the selectee and derivatives.
To understand your “place in the line”, you have to understand the density of cases, number of derivatives on each case, how many cases will respond, how many will be approved and so on. There is a lot to understand. I wrote a series of articles a couple of years ago – and all can be understood by reading those – start with density analysis, and use the links at the bottom of that article to get to the others. The analysis was specific to DV2016 – but the principles are the same.
In the first few months of the new program year we don’t have much data. In January we get access to the CEAC data and then we will understand a lot more. The CEAC data is all the case status info for every case – but again we will not have DV2020 CEAC data until January 2020. In the meantime, you can see excellent visualizations of the DV2018 and 2019 data at the site maintained by a smart guy call Xarthisius. The site illustrates well the density, response rate and so on, which are things you will hear me explain (and can read about on my site).
How many visas can be issued for DV2020? How about XXX country?
According to the published information, there are 50,000 visas available globally. However, the visas are allocated through a quota system to each region. They are NOT allocated by country. However, no one country can receive more than 7% of the global allocation. – so regions have an allocation of the 50,000 global quota. This is explained in more detail here.
Can DV2019 be stopped by Trump/Republicans/Aliens?
This was fully detailed in this post from August 2017. Since then, Trump and the Republicans have continued to achieve almost nothing, and there has been no credible progress toward immigration law changes. Please read that article, and don’t ask me the same questions again until an actual real law is passed.
GROUND RULES for BritSimonSays.com
I don’t work for the government, I don’t get paid for this. I work for a living and I sleep sometimes. So – I expect people to respect my time. That means the following “rules” exist on my site.
- Read the DV lottery guide. It includes a link to my guide on how to complete the DS260, an overall rough idea of the process and so on.
- READ the FAQ (frequently asked questions). If you ask me a question that is covered in the FAQ, you are wasting my time. Please help me help you and others that need help
- Learn how to use the search feature and translation features of this site.
- Post your questions in English. Like many of you, I am multilingual but English is a common language – and most Americans ONLY speak English, and mostly, not very well 😉
- If asking multiple questions, number your questions and consider how I can answer the question. Consider how I can answer with a simple yes or no or short answer – you will find I ALWAYS answer questions like that, because you considered how to make the answer easy for me to give. Give me enough detail to answer the question without making me read about your life history for 10 minutes. I do ignore some rambling questions that send me to sleep…
- Do NOT post “are you sure” type questions – I simply HATE that. It is a huge waste of my time to have to deal with that type of follow up. Read my answer 10 times if you need, but unless you are CONVINCED I misunderstood or answered incorrectly, don’t ask me the same thing I just answered.
- Post your question once and wait for a reply. Sometimes your post won’t show up on the public page until I approve it. That doesn’t mean you should post the same question 5 more times. Just wait.
- If following up to a question you already asked – use “REPLY” to keep the questions in context. I see an administrators view of the questions – I don’t always see that one question is close to your previous question, but I am able to jump to the thread if you use reply.
- Don’t expect me to know everything about life in all the countries around the world. You may not have left country A – but you should consider that the world does not all work the same way as country A.
- Tell the truth. Don’t lie to me. I hate it – and it is pointless. This process requires honesty. So do I.
- Keep your data private. Your case number should be quoted with region and year, but you don’t need to give me, or anyone else, a precise number. Give a range by “X-ing out” the last few digits. So – if your number is 2019AF000012345, you can quote your number as 2019AF12XXX. That tells me you are about the 12000 to 13000 range in AF region in 2019.
- Every year I get a few characters that drive me nuts. There is the person that asks every single question that pops into their head. If someone is making use of the info here, that should not be necessary. Take some responsibility for your own case. Second I get some smartasses that get uppity with me over one thing or another. I could argue for England, I enjoy a good argument, but this isn’t the place for that and I am too busy. I will not hesitate to delete messages I find annoying or damaging to other people’s chances. Some people are amazed when I do that – but this is my blog. If you want to argue because you think you know better, just find somewhere else to do that. I’m not interested in feeding your ego, and I don’t care if you think I am arrogant, mean, a tyrant or whatever. Really – I don’t care, so those “accusations” don’t hurt me.
- This space reserved for any other rules I think of, whenever I think of them.

i am co-sponsoring myself as a F2A derivative. My joint income filed last year is 60k plus with my wife’s income included. My case will be approved and DC after a year or so. Now the question I have is 1. can I fill out the AOS form for a DV winner. A friend of mine is requesting to fill out the AOS form for him and his wife. They have received 2NL but not sure 2. if Nepal Embassy requires AOS filled up?
November 27, 2019 at 22:25
It would be unwise to try and sponsor someone else while your own case progresses.

Maybe you should make yourself more clear to avoid me wasting my time! Complete the DS260 accurately.

Good day, BritSimon,
I am 2020DVlottery winner: my # 2020AF32XXX
One quick question about the police clearance:
I have been living in SA for about 20 years, do i need to submit my country of origine’s police clearance as well provided that I left when i was over 16 years? or Do I have just to submit the SA’s one? Any idea?
Thanks for your time and consideration!
November 30, 2019 at 00:50
This is absolutely clear if you read the instructions. Please do so.
November 30, 2019 at 05:16
Hi Serge
You have to submit also the police clearance of your country of origin.
If you read carefully the instructions you will understand exactly what to do.
By the way am also leaving in SA for 13 Years now and I did get the one from my country.
We can share same ideas if you want.
Am also a selecté of 2020 and my number is current for January.
November 29, 2019 at 17:35

November 30, 2019 at 14:15
Hi Simon
I sent the documents scanned to the KCC,it’s been 6 weeks and I haven’t received an answer yet.As far as I know this has happened to others too..What is happening and what can i do?..i’m number 15***
Thanks for your time and consideration!
November 30, 2019 at 17:03
Your case number is meaningless without the year and region.
November 30, 2019 at 17:50
We have to wait visa buletini?
November 30, 2019 at 19:29
Your case number must be current, yes.
November 30, 2019 at 17:11
Hello Brit
I share the same concern with the person above
My case number is 2020EU20003.
It’s 6 weeks now and havent received any email from KCC.
What would you suggest me to do?
Thank you in advance
Zheni
November 30, 2019 at 17:32
Wait. Your number is not current.
November 30, 2019 at 17:19
Delaying required documents because of some issues is there any disqualification???
November 30, 2019 at 17:32
No.
November 30, 2019 at 17:52
i sent the documents scanned to the KCC,it’s been 6 weeks and I haven’t received an answer yet.As far as I know this has happened to others too..What is happening and what can i do? I’m number 15*** DV2020 europe
November 30, 2019 at 19:30
Right – so finally we can see your case number is not current – and regardless of what the KCC email said you will have to wait until you are current.
December 1, 2019 at 02:23
Hi,
my case number is EU4xxx(Uzbekistan), i had interview on November 7th with my family(wife, 2 kids). the interview didn’t last even 3 minutes, after high-level overviewing my documents(didn’t say anything about lack of documents) and the officer gave us passports back with paper. (paper says 21g Administrative Processing) and we were told that they will contact us. until now we haven’t hear any news from embassy. from your experience how long it may take? and what is the possibility of getting visa?
thanks
December 1, 2019 at 04:55
I don’t know your case or why you were put on AP. So – I cannot predict the time it will last or the outcome.
December 2, 2019 at 12:57
Thanks for your reply. On the same day i saw 10-12 other people for DV interview and all of them got the same result. It gives me thinking Embassy doesn’t have all info from KCC before our interviews.
December 3, 2019 at 02:19
No. The information is all electronic. The embassy has everything KCC has.
Now – it is not a surprise that most candidates in Uzbekistan go through additional screening, based on security concerns, and the American perspective on Islamic terrorism.
December 4, 2019 at 19:26
Do you know how I check the status of it? I tried on ceac.state.gov with my case number and even with A number from my DS260. Both didn’t work
December 6, 2019 at 03:41
The status is either waiting, or not waiting. You’ll know when you are in the second status.
December 1, 2019 at 07:17
Sir my case number . 2020AS26769
Still one or two days remaining for the 6 weeks i submitted supporting documents at Oct 20 .
Thank You Sir,
December 1, 2019 at 17:04
Your number is nowhere near current – so you won’t hear anything for months.
December 1, 2019 at 22:21
Hi Brit… (Case Numb: 2020AF42***)
1.I have question…I won the 2020 DV as the Principal applicant, my wife did the initial registration and at the time of registering we had already married which was July 2018 and she did the registration Oct 30th 2018. She already had daughter but failed to add her to the initial registration in my form or hers and so her( her daughter but my step daughter) name did appear under my case. Now the issues, I filled the Ds260 without adding my step daughter cause they made it clear if you failed to add a family member in the initial stage you wont be able to add that person in the Ds260?
2. Want to find out if this will cause any problem at the interview even though I did not add her to the Ds260 forms.
Thank You…Hoping to receive your reply soon
December 1, 2019 at 22:59
You have broken the rules and will be disqualified once the daughter is known. The only way you could proceed is by continuing the lie, which is immigration fraud. It could NEVER be fixed, so my best advice is to NOT proceed with your case.
December 2, 2019 at 11:01
Much Appreciated Brit…One more thing…I stand to be corrected…..What is wrong if I have a child and decided not to migrate to USA with but I made it clear in the Ds260 I have a child but not migrating with her?.
Thank you.
December 3, 2019 at 00:56
The child should have been included in the initial ENTRY. The instructions are very clear about that – I’m including below the exact wording from the entry instructions (Q13 of the FAQ). https://travel.state.gov/content/dam/visas/Diversity-Visa/DV-Instructions-Translations/DV-2020-Instructions-Translations/DV-2020-Instructions-English.pdf
“Children: You must list ALL your living children who are unmarried and under 21 years of age at the time of
your initial DV entry, whether they are your natural children, your step-children (even if you are now divorced
from that child’s parent), your spouse’s children, or children you have formally adopted in accordance with the
applicable laws. List all children under 21 years of age at the time of your electronic entry, even if they no
longer reside with you or you do not intend for them to immigrate under the DV program. You are not
required to list children who are already U.S. citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents, though you will not be
penalized if you do include them.
Parents and siblings of the entrant are ineligible to receive DV visas as dependents, and you should not
include them in your entry.
If you list family members on your entry, they are not required to apply for a visa or to immigrate or travel
with you. However, if you fail to include an eligible dependent on your original entry or, list someone who is
not your dependent, your case will be disqualified at the time of your visa interview, and no visas will be
issued to you or any of your family members. This only applies to those who were family members at the
time the entry was submitted, not those acquired at a later date. Your spouse, if eligible to enter, may still
submit a separate entry even though he or she is listed on your entry, as long as both entries include details
about all dependents in your family (see FAQ #12 above).”
December 3, 2019 at 10:40
Thank you Brit…From the above information given above, I think I need to make a choice where to go on and try my luck to process my case or cancel it.
1. Now Brit, what if I want to try my Luck and process my case, what advice will you give to me to enable my chances to get the Visa. ( I remember in your early submissions you said I should not process the case).
2. I also participated in the 2021 Dv, do you think if am not given a visa in the 2020 Dv , will it affect ma chances of getting a Visa in 2021Dv if I win.
Thank you….
December 3, 2019 at 15:23
What do you mean by “try your luck”. Do you mean commit immigration fraud?
December 3, 2019 at 15:58
No Brit…not to commit “immigration fraud”but to present it as it is….
December 3, 2019 at 16:44
Then that is CERTAIN to result in denial. You left an eligible derivative out of the initial entry. There is NO CASE that has ever been approved with that circumstance because the law and the instructions are very clear that denial is the only result.
December 3, 2019 at 22:43
Thank you Brit…I guess maybe it is not my time yet. ..Have to wait God knows when I will win again.
Thanks…really appreciate your time to reply all my comments.
December 2, 2019 at 12:01
Good Day BritSimon.
I already filled all the DS260 forms and submitted and even submitted the required documents asked by KCC for me and my deriavatives. But now something came up, my husband gain admission to do a Degree in europe and he is expected to start class in January 2020. What will i do now that he wouldnt be joining me to the interview and for further processing. Do i need to write to KCC for me to withdraw his form and that of my stepson. Since i wouldn’t be able to prove the relationship between me and my stepson with him not being there. Please advice us accordingly so we can start that process before the 2NL will be sent by KCC. And what documents will i need to take with me to the interview to prove that he is not joining us because he is studying.
Thanks
December 3, 2019 at 01:01
Assuming you are the winner, you can decide who attends the interview or not. If your spouse does not want to move the the USA, you are not obligated to force him. So – you can email KCC to let them know if you want – but you can wait until the day of interview.
Now – the CO may see you as a larger risk because your spouse is not there to support you in the new life in the USA. So – be prepared to explain your plan to survive.
December 3, 2019 at 01:10
So no need to request for the DS260 form and cancel his name and that of my stepson. Are you saying I can just explain that to the CO on the day of the interview.
And what do you mean when you said the CO might see me as a larger risk. I am the principal applicant amd i will be going with my 2 daughters. First s 3yrs and the other is just 8months. Will that be a problem. My case number is 2020AF00025xxx when do you think we should expect to be interviewed.
Thanks.
December 3, 2019 at 02:42
1. Yes. You cannot remove their names now anyway.
2. A larger risk of becoming a public charge. With two very your children, how will you support the family. Childcare is very expensive here, so you will need to show a plan on how you will support yourself without the additional income from your spouse.
December 2, 2019 at 12:37
Hi Sir,
. . Sir when i will get the next e-mail what is the next step for me which i should prepare for interview.
December 4, 2019 at 16:23

December 8, 2019 at 16:37

Sir my case is same like this one.

While you’re waiting, you can read the FAQ.
December 7, 2019 at 14:26
I have got my interview scheduled . I am confused about the US individual tax return. Is w2 wage enough to summit during interview. As per my Sponsor, he doesnot own a bussiness, w2 wage summary is enough and thereis nothing like US individual tax return. Can you please make me clear.
December 7, 2019 at 16:39
Everyone files a tax return (1040). So – you should have the W2, 1040, recent payslips, and photo ID.
December 8, 2019 at 14:40
Hello Brit I’m a Dv 2020 winner case number AF7***, I’m a single mother with two children, do u think that will affect my case?
2.When do u think I will get interview?
Thanks
December 8, 2019 at 16:22
1. I don’t know bout your circumstances. They might be concerned about public charge if the children are young.
2. You are already current, so it depends on when you send the DS260 and documents.
December 8, 2019 at 18:36
Sir how . to check the case number that it is current . and also how to know that your interview date is near?
Where . i can find?
Thank you
December 8, 2019 at 20:05
You can read the FAQ which will get you to an article that explains how to read the VB.
December 8, 2019 at 20:57
Thanks, I send the documents to kcc December 3rd, so when u think I will get interview?
Thanks.
December 9, 2019 at 01:46

December 12, 2019 at 20:06
Hi, i have quick question before reaching out to KCC. i filed my DS in November 10, my caseNumber is EU58xx. but unfortunately the email i used in DS260, i forgot my password for it and i can’t regain access to it. so i don’t know if KCC sent already email to me asking my documents. is it ok if i send email to KCC with my other email and tell them please use my new email instead of email which i used in DS260? or I have to us to unlock my DS, so i can update there?
December 12, 2019 at 23:35
No need to update – send the email from any account.
December 13, 2019 at 08:30
Hello Brit,
I just received for the second time, the same KCC email that other DV documents are required.
Indeed, I sent my documents since June 2019 and it was in December they sent me this email. I then returned the documents and still the same request from KCC.
My CN is 2020AF202XX and we are five person in my case (me, my wife and three children)
Below is the format I used (according to the guidelines given):
2020AF00020XXX_MXXX_XXXma_XXXX_Police_Certificate_Country_Guinea.pdf
2020AF00020XXX_XXXXXX_XXXXul_XXXXXd_XXXX_Passport.pdf
How can I satisfy them? Need your Help.
December 13, 2019 at 22:17
You need to look very carefully at the instructions and make sure you are providing all the documents you are being asked for. If you don’t provide a complete set they will ignore what you have given them.
December 15, 2019 at 20:54
Hi Brit, my problem is fixed. forgot to send the police certiicate for madame.
Thanks a lot.
December 15, 2019 at 14:35
Thank you for your inquiry.
After sending documents to [email protected], you will receive an automatic reply to your email. If there are no attachments, the auto reply explains there are no documents attached to the email. If there are attachments, the auto reply explains we received your email and are currently processing your documents. Please allow time for processing of your documents. Documents are processed in numerical order, based on lottery rank number. Once KCC has processed your documents, we will let you know if anything is missing or if we have received everything needed.
Your forms have been received and are currently processing. Allow several weeks for processing. Interviews are scheduled numerically based on case numbers that have completed processing. Once the Kentucky Consular Center has finished processing your DS-260, you will receive an email from the Kentucky Consular Center giving you instructions to complete in order for your case to continue processing.
For January, immigrant numbers in the DV category are available to qualified DV-2020 applicants chargeable to all regions/eligible countries as follows. When an allocation cut-off number is shown, visas are available only for applicants with DV regional lottery rank numbers BELOW the specified allocation cut-off number:
AFRICA 19,000 Except: Egypt 10,000
ASIA 8,200 Except: Iran 5,100
Nepal 6,500
EUROPE 10,300
N. AMERICA 8
OCEANIA 1,200
S. AMERICA 1,075
The Visa Bulletin at https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/law-and-policy/bulletin.html is updated monthly and contains the current allocation cut-off numbers as well as other important information.
Interviews for the DV 2020 program will begin in October 2019 and will conclude on September 30, 2020. KCC cannot provide information as to when an interview date may become available for your case. Interviews are scheduled numerically according to assigned case numbers which have completed processing. The Department of State designates how many interviews will be scheduled each month according to visa availability. You may refer to the visa bulletin at http://www.travel.state.gov for the list of current numbers. This information is updated on the 15th day of each month thereafter.
What does it means Asia 8,200?
Thank you Sir
I got this e-mail at Dec 3

Dear sir, I’m from Sri Lanka , My wife won DV2020 and our VISA approval is pending due to lack of i-134 affidavit of support. Could you please help me on how to overcome this?
My friends in USA are little reluctant to give this saying it’s a legitimate bond for them.
thank you..
December 21, 2019 at 21:48
Proving a valid I-134 is the solution. An I-134 is not legally binding – as explained here:
https://britsimonsays.com/i-134-or-i-184-difference/
January 24, 2020 at 04:05
Dear Chamila,
I’m also from Sri Lanka. If you couldn’t find the sponsor for this, please let me know. There is one of my friends who live in USA, I’ll ask him & let you know. But I can’t promise
Please contact me. [email protected]

That is a kind, but daft offer. The embassy will not trust that a stranger will financially support someone.
December 24, 2019 at 13:10

3. I have never said that.
December 24, 2019 at 16:44
First thanks alot for your useful articles, and for replying everyone’s inquiry..
My case number is 2020AS29xxx . I submitted DS260 and send all documents. When do you expect I will be invited to interview? I live in United Arab Emirates.
December 24, 2019 at 17:24
Your number is high, so it will be summer 2020 before you are interviewed.
December 27, 2019 at 08:30
Hello there SImon. First of all, would like to thank you for all the effort that you’ve put in to help us and all the people around the world through your videos and website. They are very helpful.
I have a question. Do we have to show or submit our financial statement or background during the time of our DV2020 interview ??
Thanks in advance and really appreciate the effort.
Have a great day.
December 28, 2019 at 20:43
It’s a pity you did not go through the article above very well. Do that and you will find your way to the FAQ which has at least one article that answers the question.
December 31, 2019 at 08:37
Just did. Thank you again. Happy new year.
December 27, 2019 at 18:22
hi brit ,

December 28, 2019 at 20:47
March would be OK.
December 30, 2019 at 04:33
Hi Simon still didn’t receive any email cn53###
December 30, 2019 at 16:11
You have to be patient. You have a long time to wait anyway, because of your case number. If you have not been asked for your documents yet – you can email KCC.
January 3, 2020 at 08:13
Hello sir, Our case number is 2020AF38xxx we sent the documents very early on August and all documents on December. December 18 the documents reached 3 months. The people who is helping us told us that when you case reached 3 months even if it is a higher number they will respond, but after reading you I begin to think he is lying to us. Thank for your respond
January 3, 2020 at 16:29
Stop listening to the fool.
Contact KCC and ask if they are satisfied with your documents. If they are, you then only need to wait to be current.
January 3, 2020 at 19:33
Thank you. We received this email since September 18 2019.
Records indicate you have submitted a complete and valid DS-260 application for each family member, and you have provided all required documentation to the Kentucky Consular Center.
Interviews are scheduled numerically based on case numbers that have completed processing. Interviews for the DV 2020 program will begin in October 2019 and conclude on September 30, 2020. Please refer to the visa bulletin at http://www.travel.state.gov to locate the current numbers being processed. This bulletin is updated after the 15th day of each month. Once an interview date has been scheduled, you will receive notification via email to check
January 3, 2020 at 19:56
So that is all you will hear until you are current. Now you just wait for your number.
January 5, 2020 at 03:24
Mr. Brit. A happy new year for you and fam. I have tricky question if I can call it that way. What if I submitted my DS260 form stating family is not migrating with me, an then change mind before asked for documents?
PS. 2. Does it affect the timing of interview, in case asking to unlock the form for the new inputs?
Thank you for clearing up.
January 5, 2020 at 03:42
Regardless of the answer you are going to do it anyway – aren’t you!
January 5, 2020 at 03:58
Well, yes! I am just wondering if I will have to do any explanations and what the steps I have to follow. I know I have to add their primary docs, so, just worried. Thank you.
January 5, 2020 at 04:21
You have to unlock, add DS260 for each derivative, and then when you send documents you have to follow the instructions and send documents for all of them.
January 5, 2020 at 11:10
Hello Brit!
I have a question regarding my region. I am from Kazakhstan and it’s in Asia but some say it’s considered as Europe.
My case number is 2020EU00042***
Because it says EU in the case number should i keep track of Europe in Bulletin Board?
Also, I know that the number is very high, do you think I will be interviewed during summer?
Thanks in advance !!!
January 5, 2020 at 19:13
Yes you watch the EU number.
Yes summer interview.
January 12, 2020 at 07:28
Hi Brit,
My friend’s DV2020 application was selected for further processing. In his application, he included his wife and three kids as derivatives. They have since separated and his wife is currently in the US on an expired B1/B2 visa pending asylum. She had to run, she was in extreme danger and the husband supported her move.
Questions;
1. Is it still viable for the wife to be included for the interview?
2. If yes to 1, how does she get processed and she cannot go back to her home country? police certificate and embassy interview
3. If no to 1, will the husband be required to explain this while sending documents? (he just got email to send documents).
4. Will this whole scenario impact negatively on his interview?
ps: He came for advise from me, so am coming for advise from you hoping to benefit from your wealth of experience.
Thanks and God bless
January 12, 2020 at 17:01
Complex immigration matters should be handled professionally – not by advice through word of mouth.
If she cannot join him for the interview she may need to adjust status while in the USA, but she must not have been out of status while there. They should discuss it with her attorney handling the asylum case.
January 13, 2020 at 04:41
Hello BritSimon. I hope you are well. I have sent the docs via email by request and already went to apply for the police certificate on 22 Nov 2019. In my country, the police certificate will be directly sent to US Consulate within four calender weeks instead of bringing by us. The question is I haven’t received any email from KCC stating that they have received all the documents, I don’t know what now it is up to, should I worry or need more patience? Thankyou.
January 16, 2020 at 03:55
Hi there Brit,
With the activation trip, I am aware that the derivative applicant must be present with the principal applicant in the designated city of choice (our’s L.A), but once you enter the POE together and get your stamp, is the derivative applicant allowed to stay on longer in the selected city – or do both parties need to have the same returning flights to their home country. I’d like to stay an extra fews days in L.A but my husband has to return home to work. Is that allowed?
January 16, 2020 at 04:09
Once you have activated your LPR status by entering the USA, you are not restricted in any way regarding travelling, or staying in the USA. Your status then has nothing to do with the main applicant.
January 19, 2020 at 05:04
I was with my girlfriend before I came to US but she was one month pregnancy, now am finished months what is the easiest procedure to bring her US because I want to marry she had my child now almost months
January 19, 2020 at 18:28
The procedure is to marry, then file an I-130 case for your wife and child. That will take around 2 years.
January 21, 2020 at 13:36
Hi Brit, I am a dv 2020 winner AF32000. I will be current very soon and was just wondering what supportive documents from my host i need to put together before the interview date. thanks
January 21, 2020 at 18:44
Normally, the I-134 – read the FAQ about that.
January 22, 2020 at 22:27
Hello britsimon
My CN is AS23xxx i still didn’t submit ds260 do u think im already late now and if i submit in February there is chance that visas will run short untill i get interview date ?
When do u roughly think my case will get current ?
January 22, 2020 at 23:41
You are not too late.
Your case will go current at some point between May and September.
January 23, 2020 at 17:24
Hi Brit,
Thanks for the great blog. I won the DV lottery in 2018 and I entered USA for first time in April 2019 (my green card was activated then). Since then, I have only visited USA for few days every 3 months but I have not officially moved there yet, I still have to sort out few things in Europe. I asked to the USA border officers how much time I have to do the full move to USA, and one officer answered that I have to be living in USA within 1 year since my GC was activated, whereas another officer said that I have two years time (they understand I have things to close in Europe before moving there). Obviously I can’t spend more than 1 year in a row outside of USA.
My question is: do you know if it ‘s 1 or 2 years? And where I could I check it for sure? Maybe at the USA embassy in my country?
Thanks a lot in advance,
January 23, 2020 at 21:04
There is no such rule. The rules that do exist are about periods of absence – but a border patrol officer is entitled to refer you to an immigration judge if he/she feels that you are not actually residing in the USA.
January 23, 2020 at 22:41
Thank you very much for your answer. And do you know if I need to file taxes in USA for 2019? I activated my GC in June 10th and I only spent 15 days in USA during 2019.
January 24, 2020 at 00:14
Yes you need to file a 2019 return.
January 23, 2020 at 20:38
Hello Brit, I received a notification letter for my interview appointment.
How I’m I going to do the medical? Because I didn’t see anything about medical in the letter and I checked all the link I didn’t see anything.
Thanks in advance
January 23, 2020 at 21:13
You did not read the embassy specific instructions – which is in the original instructions.
January 24, 2020 at 08:56
I didn’t see anything. Please help me. My interview is March 10
January 24, 2020 at 16:55
You should already have read all this. Take responsibility for your case!

Thanks very much I appreciate it.
Got it
January 23, 2020 at 23:57
Hi Brit, my case number 2020EU58xx, and it was current in December. But I filed DS 260 on November 11th and send me all required documents on January 19. Do you think when I can expect my interview to be scheduled?
January 24, 2020 at 00:15
April or May.
January 28, 2020 at 13:47
Hello Britsimon, thanks for all your good information… I have a question,i am working with the UN here in Liberia .. How can I join the US military..if I win the DV lottery program, do I have to know someone in the US military,..to help me join? Or I have to be a US citizen before I can join the US military?
January 28, 2020 at 18:11
A Green card holder can join the military – but get your GC first.
January 29, 2020 at 00:38
Hi Brit, I read that there are 83.884 selectees in DV 2020. My case number is 2020AS212**. Does it mean that I’m the 21.2** th selectee out of those 83.884? Or there is other way when KCC assign the case number? Thanks

Hi Simon
My case is 2020EU28*** and
— I submitted my documents on 06/12/2019 but until now i haven’t got 2NL. Should i contact KCC to ask them ?
— and also I made a mistake in my name in the first application (DV lottery for the green card) instead Mutabarkhonposho I wrote Mutabarkhonposhosho and also there’s additional -i- in my son’s surname Obidov – Obiidov and we corrected them in the DS-260 and added them like other names in DS- 260 (I know some cases with such kind problems and they didn’t get a visa) and I’m worrying about it. What do you think, do we have a chance to get a visa? Thank you Simon
God bless you
Kind regards
January 29, 2020 at 05:13
NUMBER questions please.
1. Of course you haven’t got your 2NL. You aren’t current yet. Have you been asked to send documents? Have you done so?
2. Usually not a problem as long as there are no suspicions of fraud.
January 29, 2020 at 13:57
Thank you very much for your answers I appreciate them.
1. About my first question. I want to say that I have been asked to send our documents and I sent the scan on the 6/12/2019. I expected during more than 6 weeks but didn’t have any email from KCC.
2. About my second question I want to ask What do you think about that I wrote the incorrect variant which I made in the first application like the other names in DS-260?
3. One more question what do you think when we will be interview?
January 30, 2020 at 00:50
1. You can ask KCC if you want.
2. Stop worrying. Re-read my answer.
3. Once your documents are processed AND you are current. When – wait and see.
January 29, 2020 at 18:21
Please sir we have been scheduled for March 3rd 2020 for our interview and my wife is pregnant and per the doctors scan they said she will deliver in March 9th to 11th 2020 so please am confused for now. I dont know whether I can do my medicals with her or I should do it alone. Sir please what is your advice on this.
January 29, 2020 at 20:06
You both need to have the medical. When the baby is born you will have to quickly obtain the birth cert and passport and work with the embassy to get either a visa, or a travel document.
January 29, 2020 at 23:28
Hi Brit,
I have a concern regarding the name of my spouse. When applying for the green card in 2018 (DV 2020) I added my spouse’s sur name as EKANAYAKE. I am from Sri Lanka and we had only the passport in English and the sur name was EKANAYAKA in the passport. So, when applying for DS 260, I applied as EKANAYAKA in evert places. But, before we get the DS 260 form there are 2 entries one for the principal applicant and the other for the spouse. There (before clicking on that to proceed) his name appears as EKANAYAKE. (As I applied for the green card)
Will that be a problem?
Thanks
January 29, 2020 at 23:58
Probably not.
January 31, 2020 at 00:53
